Abstract
The present immunohistochemical study was designed to investigate the alteration in the expression level of calbindin D28k in the periodontal ligament of the rat molar in response to changes in occlusal force to clarify the physiological role(s) of this protein in the ligament. In normal periodontal ligament of the lower first molar, immunoreactivity for calbindin D28k was found in the spindle-shaped cells, presumably fibroblasts, at the alveolar portion of the ligament at the distal side of the mesial root and mesial side of the distal root. Following the overload of occlusal force to the upper first molar by bite-raising, the number and immunoreactivity of the positive cells in the periodontal ligament of the lower first molar increased gradually. A more significant increase was detected at 7 d following the bite-raising compared to the normal animals. When occlusal force was removed by the extraction of the upper first molar, the expression level of calbindin D28k in the periodontal ligament of the lower first molar rapidly decreased, however a subsequent gradual increase was recognized. Statistical analysis of the spatial immunoreactivity of calbindin D28k in the periodontal ligament was performed and showed statistically significant differences. The present results suggest that calbindin D28k may play important roles in the homeostasis and cytoprotection of the periodontal fibroblasts against occlusal force.

Abstract
Treatment with millimolar concentrations of phenylacetate (PA), results in cytostasis, growth inhibition and differentiation in several human cancer cell lines, including prostate cancer. However, the molecular basis of PA-induced biological effects has not been elucidated in detail. In this study we focused on its influence on cell cycle events and investigated alterations in cell cycle regulators in androgen-dependent and independent human prostate cancer cell lines. FACS analysis revealed that suppression of cell growth by PA was due to G1 arrest, with reduced phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) and CDK2 activity. Expression of p27Kip1 was increased, while p21Cip1, p53, cyclinD1 and cyclin E were not affected by PA. Binding of p27Kip1 to CDK2 increased significantly following treatment with PA. Furthermore, antisense p27Kip1 oligonucleotide attenuated the inhibitory effect of PA. Our results suggested that p27Kip1 might be a critical target in PA-mediated cell growth arrest in prostate cancer cells playing a key role in CDK2 inactivation followed by hypophosphorylation of pRB and subsequent G1 cell cycle arrest.

Abstract
Tektins are a group of proteins that form filamentous polymers in the walls of ciliary microtubules. The cloning of canine cDNA encoding tektin, was carried out and identified from the testis of beagle dog. Canine tektin cDNA is 1,523 bp in length, has an open reading frame of 1,281 bp nucleotides encoding a protein of 426 deduced amino acids. The predicted amino acid sequence has 77% and 33-50% of homology with the murine tektin and the sea urchin tektins. The amino acid sequence RPNVELCRD and four cysteine residues were conserved in the dog, mouse and sea urchin, suggesting the functional significance of this protein domain and the amino acid residues in the tektin proteins.

Abstract
Atypical protein kinase C (PKC) isotype-specific interacting protein (ASIP) specifically interacts with the atypical protein kinase C isozymes PKClambda and PKCzeta. ASIP and atypical PKC, as well as their Caenorhabditis elegans counterparts (PAR-3 and PKC-3, respectively), are thought to coordinately participate in intracellular signaling that contributes to the maintenance of cellular polarity and to the formation of junctional complexes. The potential role of ASIP in other cellular functions of atypical PKC was investigated by examining the effect of overexpression of ASIP on insulin-induced glucose uptake, previously shown to be mediated through PKClambda, in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. When overexpressed in these cells, which contain PKClambda but not PKCzeta, ASIP was co-immunoprecipitated with endogenous PKClambda but not with PKCepsilon or with Akt. The subcellular localization of PKClambda was also altered in cells overexpressing ASIP. Overexpression of ASIP inhibited insulin stimulation of both glucose uptake and translocation of the glucose transporter GLUT4 to the plasma membrane, but it did not inhibit glucose uptake induced by either growth hormone or hyperosmolarity both of which promote glucose uptake in a PKClambda-independent manner. Moreover, glucose uptake stimulated by a constitutively active mutant of PKClambda, but not that induced by an active form of Akt, was inhibited by ASIP. Insulin-induced activation of PKClambda, but not that of phosphoinositide 3-kinase or Akt, was also inhibited by overexpression of ASIP. These data suggest that overexpression of ASIP inhibits insulin-induced glucose uptake by specifically interfering with signals transmitted through PKClambda.

Abstract
We report a case of chromophobe cell renal carcinoma. A 45-year-old woman with a chief complaint of macrohematuria and left backache was introduced to our hospital in October 1998. Abdominal computed tomographic scan (CT) revealed a solitary, solid mass (16 x 14 x 12 cm) at the upper pole of the left kidney. Angiography showed a hypervascular character but irregular neovasculizations were found. We performed a radical nephrectomy with a preoperative diagnosis of malignant renal tumor. The cut surface appearance of the tumor was homogeneous, grey-beige and solid. Light microscopic findings revealed voluminous cells with light, but not clear cytoplasm displaying a fine reticular pattern. Histochemical staining with Hale's colloidal iron stain demonstrated a distinctly positive cytoplasmic reaction. Since the ultrastructural study revealed numerous intracytoplasmic microvesicles, we finally reached the diagnosis of chromophobe cell renal carcinoma. We report our case here with reference to the relevant literature.

Abstract
Melanoma antigens (MAGE) are regarded to induce tumour-specific immune response and thought to be potential therapeutical agents for cancer immunotherapy. We hereby report the canine MAGE cDNA cloned from the testis of a beagle dog. Canine MAGE cDNA is 1,455 base pair (bp) nucleotides in length, and contains an open reading frame (ORF) of 1,137 bp nucleotides encoding a protein of 378 amino acids. The predicted amino acid sequence has 22-49% of homology with other MAGE proteins. mRNA transcripts of canine MAGE were detected only in the melanoma and testis and not in other normal tissues of adult dog by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), indicating that the expression pattern of canine MAGE mRNA is similar to that of the MAGE family genes in tumor and normal tissues.

Abstract
Delayed platelet recovery is an inherent problem with cord blood cell transplantation (CBCT). To investigate this problem, the number of human megakaryocyte (MK) progenitor cells in cord blood (CB; n = 24) was measured and compared with that in G-CSF-mobilized peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC; n = 25). The median numbers of colony-forming units for MK (CFU-MK) that were detected by a serum-free assay system in CB and peripheral blood (PB) were 26 (range, 6-102)/10(5) nucleated cells (NC) and 37 (2-540)/10(5) mononuclear cells (MNC), respectively. The numbers of colony-forming units for granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM) were 88 (33-241)/10(5) NC in CB and 138 (6.3-1,250)/10(5) MNC in PB. The frequencies of CD34(+) cells in CB and PB were, respectively, 0.44% (0.10-1.07) and 0.98% (0.05-20.8). The numbers of CFU-MK in CB and PBSC were correlated with those of CD34(+) cells. The estimated number of infused CFU-MK in CBCT was 1/15 that of PBSC transplantation (PBSCT), based upon the above data and the widely used standard doses for both types of transplants. Further, the numbers of infused CFU-MK in patients who received allogeneic PBSCT at our institute were inversely correlated with the speed of platelet recovery. These data indicate that delayed platelet recovery after CBCT is simply due to the low number of CFU-MK contained in grafts.

Abstract
Antibodies against the 24 kDa Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Rs24p) protein were detected by ELISA to evaluate the relationship between antibodies and tick infestation. The mean titer of 3 dogs that underwent 2 experimental infestations with adult ticks was transiently increased after the second infestation. There was a significant difference in mean titers between positive control dogs naturally infested with ticks and tick-naive dogs. These results suggested that anti-Rs24p antibodies detected by ELISA are a marker of tick exposure. There was no significant difference in mean titers between tick-naive dogs and seropositive dogs to Ehrlichia canis. Some dogs positive for E. canis antibodies showed, however, higher titers than most tick-naive dogs. R. sanguineus may be related to the E. canis infection in Japan.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated the presence of calbindin D28k in the ameloblasts derived from the inner enamel epithelium. The occlusal surfaces of the rodent molars partly lack the enamel covering, which is referred to as enamel-free area (EFA). In the present study, we compared the immunohistochemical localization of calbindin D28k-like immunoreactivity (CB-LI) in the cells at the EFA (EFA cells) and ameloblasts of the rat molar teeth at the light microscopic level. CB-LI was strong in the ameloblasts of the presecretory through the protective stages, while it was faint at the late secretory to transitional stages. However, some mature ameloblasts lacked the immunoreactivity. On the other hand, the majority of EFA cells showed distinct polarization and elongation that were absent in few cells at the early stage of EFA formation. At all stages, the EFA cells adjacent to the ameloblasts showed CB-LI, however, some cells adjacent to the mature ameloblasts lacked the reaction. Intensive CB-LI was demonstrated in EFA cells at the reduced enamel epithelium. These immunohistochemical findings suggest EFA cells have cytochemical properties similar to those of ameloblasts.

Abstract
We report here a patient who suffered from PCR- confirmed human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6) meningoencephalitis after allogeneic purified CD34+ cell transplantation from his HLA-mismatched sibling donor, even though he had been on intense prophylaxis with i.v. ganciclovir (GCV), acyclovir (ACV) and gamma-globulin containing a specific antibody against HHV-6. Serological evaluation disclosed that both the donor and recipient had IgG antibody against HHV-6 before transplantation. His blood WBC count started to transiently increase on day 10, and all blood components had decreased by day 20. He then developed a severe headache and high blood pressure, and sporadic abnormal neurological findings including nystagmus and delirium. An analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed 8 cells/microl, a glucose level of 130 mg/dl and a protein level of 201 mg/dl (normal, 50 mg/dl) on day 26. At the time, HHV-6 was detected only in CSF by a PCR-based method and he was diagnosed as having meningoencephalitis due to the local reactivation of HHV-6. Although he failed to respond to high-dose therapy with ACV (60 mg/kg/day) and gamma-globulin, the DNA of this virus disappeared from the CNS upon treatment with GCV (30 mg/kg/day) combined with the intraventricular infusion of alpha-interferon. His clinical course was further complicated with meningoencephalitis due to staphylococcus epidermidis, and he died of tentorial herniation on day 79 without the recovery of blood components. This experience may indicate that intense prophylaxis to prevent reactivation of HHV-6 in the CNS is essential for the management of such profoundly immunosuppressed patients.

Abstract
To know whether two protein components of human telomerase (human telomerase-associated protein 1 (hTEP1) and human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) are useful markers for telomerase activation in human liver diseases, we examined mRNA levels of these and telomerase activity in human liver samples. Twenty-three human hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and corresponding adjacent livers were analysed for hTEP1 and hTERT expression by semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and for telomerase activity by a telomeric repeat amplification protocol assay. Thirteen liver samples (ten HCCs and three dysplastic nodules) that were biopsied with 21-gauge needles were analysed for hTERT expression. hTEP1 was expressed in all samples examined. No correlation between hTEP1 expression and telomerase activity was observed. hTERT expression significantly correlated with telomerase activity (P< 0.001). The positivity of hTERT for HCC and corresponding non-cancerous liver was 100% and 30.4% respectively (P < 0.001). Seventy-four per cent (17/23) of HCCs showed strong hTERT expression, but none of the non-cancerous liver tissues did. hTERT expression of the 21-gauge needle biopsied specimens showed no significant difference from that of the surgical samples. The present study revealed that hTERT is strongly expressed in most HCCs, and that hTERT but not hTEP1 is a key component regulating telomerase activity in human liver.

Abstract
We evaluated the result of the pediatric cataract surgery with optic capture. The intraocular lens (IOL) optic is subluxated to the vitreous body side through the posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis (PCCC). Five eyes with congenital or developmental cataracts were treated with phacoemulsification and IOL implantation, and then PCCC and optic capture was done. Three of the cases were bilateral and one case was unilateral. All cases have remained in good condition without secondary fibrous membrane formation, which influences visual acuity, and transparency of the posterior capsule was maintained in the visual axis area. We found one case of anterior capsule contraction. Long-term follow up should be continued.

Abstract
We have reported that a novel c-Myc binding protein, AMY-1, stimulated the transcription activity of c-Myc and was translocated from cytoplasm to nuclei in a c-Myc-dependent manner. Here, the role of AMY-1 in cell differentiation was examined. AMY-1 expression was up-regulated after differentiation induction of human K562 cells to erythrocyte cells by AraC, while c-Myc expression was rapidly down-regulated. K562 cell lines expressing exogenous AMY-1 were established, and these cells expressed a high level of epsilon-globin mRNA, a marker gene necessary for erythrocyte cell differentiation, without differentiation induction. The addition of AraC rapidly initiated differentiation in these cell lines, which continued to differentiate to erythrocyte cells possessing a high level of hemoglobin even after the decrease in AMY-1 expression. These results suggest that AMY-1 is a trigger for K562 cells to differentiate to erythrocyte cells and that AMY-1 may have a function independent of or different from c-Myc.

Abstract
A series of 5-substituted uracil nucleoside derivatives with a 1(1'S, 2'R)-[1',2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)cyclopropyl]methyl group as an acyclosugar moiety were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-herpetic activities. Among the compounds synthesized, (E)-5-halovinyluracil derivatives showed superior anti-varicella zoster virus (VZV) activity over acyclovir (ACV) but were less potent than ACV against herpes symplex virus type-1 (HSV-1). IC(50) values for the VZV Kawaguchi strain were 0.027 for Br, 0.070 for Cl, and 0.054 microg/mL for I derivatives and 3.4 microg/mL for ACV. The most potent compound, (1'S,2'R)-5-[(E)-2-bromoethenyl]-1-[[1', 2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)cycloprop-1'-yl]methyl]-2,4-(1H, 3H)-pyrimidinedione (3a), was 40-60-fold more potent than ACV against clinical isolates of VZV. It showed good oral bioavailability in rats (68.5%) and, unlike (E)-5-(2-bromovinyl)-1-beta-D-arabinofuranosyluracil (BVaraU), did not result in the release of (E)-5-(2-bromovinyl)uracil (BVU), a potent dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase inhibitor, in plasma after oral administration.

Abstract
Cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) is a CD28 homologue which down-modulate T cell responses rather than augment them. To investigate its biological role in feline immune system, we cloned and sequenced full-length feline CTLA-4 (fCTLA-4) cDNA by RT-PCR from pokeweed mitogen stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes. The fCTLA-4 contains an open reading frame of 669 nucleotides, coding for a polypeptide of 223 amino acids. The predicted fCTLA-4 amino acids sequence shows the homology of 86.6%, 87.0%, and 76.2% with human, bovine, and murine molecules respectively. The hexapeptide motif (MYPPPY) within the extra-cellular domain of CTLA-4 molecule, which is believed to be responsible for interaction with the B7 family members, is completely conserved in all the species.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to examine the localization of calbindin D28k (CB)-like immunoreactivity (-LI) during the root formation of the rat molar. In the adult rat, CB-LI was detected in some of the cells of the epithelial rest of Malassez at the bifurcational region and in certain cells between the root dentin and cementum at the apical region. These cells had indented nuclei and many tonofilaments, and cementocytes lacked CB-LI. Moreover, CB-LI was observed in the periodontal fibroblasts in the alveolar half of the apical region. During root formation, the cells in the Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) lacked CB-LI, but most fragmented cells along the root surface began to express CB-LI when HERS was disrupted. Preodontoblasts and odontoblasts at the apical portion of the root also showed CB-LI. After the formation of cellular cementum, the CB-immunoreactive (-IR) cells were entrapped between the root dentin and cementum in the apical portion of the root. The number of CB-IR cells at the root surface decreased gradually, while that between the root dentin and cementum increased. The fibroblasts in the periodontal ligament began to express CB-LI after commencement of the occlusion, and the number and the staining intensity of CB-IR fibroblasts increased gradually with the passage of time. The present results suggest that CB may play an important role in the survival of the epithelial cells, in the cellular responses of periodontal fibroblasts against mechanical forces caused by the occlusion, and in the initial mineralization by the odontoblasts through the regulation of intracellular Ca(2+) concentration.

Abstract
Pneumonia is a major direct cause of death in the elderly. Although aspiration based on a reduced cough reflex is one of the causes of pneumonia in the elderly, there are few studies of angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors), which are antihypertensive drugs that induce cough, as a factor influencing the incidence of pneumonia in institutionalized elderly subjects. To assess the effect of ACE inhibitors and dihydropiridine calcium-channel blockers on the incidence of pneumonia, we conducted a hospital-based case-control study. Cases were 55 pneumonia patients aged > or = 65 years during a 1-year period. The controls were elderly subjects, frequency matched to the cases by age and gender (n = 220). Data were collected on known risk factors and on medication for hypertension, consisting of ACE inhibitors, calcium-channel blockers, and nonantihypertensive medication. The significance of differences in risk factors was analyzed using univariate and multivariate comparisons of cases and controls. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, the relative risk estimates for pneumonia were 0.38 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.15-0.97) and 1.84 (95% CI, 0.89-3.78) for ACE inhibitors and calcium-channel blockers, respectively, relative to nonantihypertensive medication. The preventive effect of ACE inhibitors on pneumonia was apparent in long-acting ACE inhibitor users (0.24; 95% CI, 0.07-0.88). We conclude that ACE inhibitor use is an independent factor reducing risk of pneumonia among elderly inpatients.

Abstract
Feline serum amyloid A (SAA) cDNA clone was isolated from a hepatic mRNA of a mixed-breed cat. The feline SAA cDNA clone contains 333 nucleotides and deduced amino acid sequence shows 87.4%, 73.9%, and 65.8% homology with dog, human and mouse SAA respectively. Relative to the human and mouse SAA proteins, an additional peptide of eight amino acids is specified in the feline cDNA clone. Recombinant feline SAA (rfSAA) was expressed at high levels using pGEX bacterial expression system. Cleavage from the fusion moiety, and purification using glutathione-sepharose yielded pure soluble form of rfSAA. Antibodies generated against rfSAA were specific for feline SAA and showed no cross-reactivity with human SAA. Furthermore, antibodies against human SAA did not react with feline SAA. These results indicate that antigenicity of feline SAA is totally different from human SAA.

Abstract
Primer designed on the basis of the conserved transcription start point (tsp) region of human and bovine gene transcripts, encoding the Interleukin-4 (IL-4), and subsequently the gene specific primer and an adaptor primer pair, was successfully used, to generate the full-length complementary DNA (cDNA) sequence coding for canine IL-4 (cIL-4), from pokeweed mitogen stimulated canine peripheral blood lymphocytes. The full-length cIL-4 contains an open reading frame of 399 nucleotides (nt), with a 5' ends of 66 base pairs (bp) and 3' ends of 125 bp. The nucleotide sequence contains six possible Asn-X-Thr or Asn-X-Ser linked glycosylation sites. Five sequence motifs of TATT or ATTTA, responsible for the regulation of gene expression, are found in the 3' untranslated region.

Abstract
Members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) family transduce signals from the cell membrane to the nucleus via specific type I and type II receptors and Smad proteins. Smad1 and Smad5 mediate intracellular signaling of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), whereas Smad2 and Smad3 transduce TGF-beta signaling. Smad4 is a common mediator required for both pathways. Smad6 and Smad7 inhibit signaling by members of the TGF-beta superfamily. Here, we examined the expression of Smad1 to Smad7 proteins during endochondral ossification of epiphyseal plate of growing rats using immunohistochemical techniques. The expression of Smad proteins was correlated with the expression of TGF-beta1 and its receptors, and BMP-2/4 and BMP receptors. The results show that TGF-beta1 and BMP-2/4 were actively expressed in chondrocytes that are undergoing proliferation and maturation, which overlaps with expression of their corresponding type I and type II receptors. The Smads, however, exhibited a distinct expression pattern, respectively. For example, Smad1 and Smad5 were highly expressed in proliferating chondrocytes and in those chondrocytes that are undergoing maturation. The TGF-beta/activin-restricted Smads were also expressed in a nearly complementary fashion; Smad2 was strongly expressed in proliferating chondrocytes, whereas Smad3 was strongly observed in maturing chondrocytes. Smad4 was broadly expressed in all zones of epiphyseal plate. Inhibitory Smads, Smad6 and Smad7, were strongly expressed in the zone of cartilage that contained mature chondrocytes. Our findings show a colocalization of the pathway-restricted and inhibitory Smads with activating ligands or ligands whose action they antagonize and their receptors in various zones of epiphyseal growth plate, suggesting that TGF-beta superfamily Smad signaling pathways plays a morphogenic role during endochondral bone formation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the clinicopathological characteristics of histologically defined papillary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in relation to prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS In total, 768 patients with RCC underwent nephrectomy at our university hospital between 1957 and 1995. RCC was classified into clear-cell carcinoma in 689 patients (89.7%, no follow-up in 14), chromophobe cell carcinoma in 36 (4.7%, no follow-up in two) and papillary RCC in 43 (5.6%, no follow-up in one). In the present study, the 42 patients with papillary RCC who underwent nephrectomy and were followed up were those in whom the clinicopathological features of the papillary RCC were assessed. Factors assessed were the presence or absence of foam-cell infiltration, occurrence of bleeding and/or necrosis, presence or absence of a pseudocapsule, mixed occurrence with clear-cell carcinoma, presence or absence of solid variants, cytoplasmic appearance (basophilic vs eosinophilic cells), stage, nuclear grade of malignancy, and angiographic appearance in relation to prognosis. The prognosis was also compared among patients with clear-cell, chromophobe cell and papillary RCC. RESULTS The prognosis was significantly better in patients with foam-cell infiltration (P=0.03), with a pseudocapsule (P=0.07), with no solid variants (P=0.001) and with basophilic cells (P<0.001). There were also significant differences in survival between patients with low-stage (1+2) and high-stage (3+4) disease (P=0.003), and among grades 1-3 (grade 1 vs 2, P=0.05; grade 1 vs 3, P<0.001, grade 2 vs 3, P=0.006). Furthermore, the prognosis in patients with papillary RCC was worse than in those with chromophobe cell carcinoma (P=0.02), but there was no significant difference in survival between patients with papillary RCC and those with clear-cell carcinoma. CONCLUSION The clinicopathological features (e.g. the presence or absence of foam cells, of a pseudocapsule and of solid variants, cytoplasmic appearance, and the stage and nuclear grade of malignancy) are important prognostic factors for patients with papillary RCC. Furthermore, the prognosis in patients with papillary RCC is similar to those with clear-cell carcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inverted papilloma of the urinary tract is believed to be a benign neoplasm based on its histologic morphology and clinical behavior. In recent years, however, several investigators have warned against too optimistic an approach, emphasizing the possibility of malignant cellular transformation within the lesion, or its eventual association with other urothelial tumors such as transitional cell carcinoma or carcinoma in situ. We here report on 35 clinicopathologically diagnosed cases of inverted papilloma, and present the clinical significance attributed to these lesions in view of the current literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 1976 to 1997, 35 cases of inverted papilloma of the urinary tract were treated at our hospital. This report presents the clinical features of these cases, the results of prognosis research, an investigation of the cases in which inverted papilloma and transitional cell carcinoma were found to co-exist, and a discussion of the recurrent cases of inverted papilloma found in previous literature. RESULTS The patients ranged from 24 to 77 years of age, with a mean of 54 years, and included 4 women and 31 men. The most frequently occurring symptom was grosshematuria, and more than 90% of the 35 cases occurred in the bladder. In 2 of the 35 cases, transitional cell carcinoma coexisted with the inverted papilloma, at a different location in the bladder in one case and within the same neoplasm in the ureter in the other case. Clinical courses after treatment were followed in 29 of the 35 cases, with a follow-up period of from 8 months to 19 years (mean follow-up, 5 years and 4 months). Of these 29 cases, 2 showed recurrence, one at 16 and one at 30 months after the initial resection. Many previous reports show that the association of inverted papilloma and transitional cell carcinoma is stronger in the upper urinary tract and recurrence of inverted papilloma almost always happens with 2 years. CONCLUSION This study suggests that some cases of urinary inverted papilloma show recurrence or malignant potential. Our results indicate that all cases of urinary inverted papilloma should be treated and followed as cases of low-grade transitional cell carcinomas. Consequently, all cases must be followed for two years or more after the initial operation.
