Abstract
We have developed an artificial organ conditioning system in order not only to condition but also evaluate the viability for transplant graft of kidneys which have been stored for a long time and damaged by warm ischaemia following cardiac arrest. The conditioning system consisted of an artificial lung, a roller pump, an organ chamber and perfusate. The perfusate was prepared with electrolytes, fluorocarbon, amino acid, glucose, an oxygen scavenger and so on. Conditioning was performed by continuous perfusion under mild hypothermia at 24° C. Mildly damaged kidneys (0 and 30 minutes warm ischaemia rabbit kidneys) were well conditioned but severely damaged kidneys failed to produce urination. Our device successfully exposed the viability of stored kidneys and the successful conditioning of damaged kidneys due to warm ischaemia avoiding transplantation. By establishing our method, the harvesting of kidneys following cardiac arrest will be feasible.

Abstract
AbstractTo evaluate the QUIK-R, a revised self-completed questionnaire for the quality of life (QOL), and to clarify the significance of measuring QOL in health evaluations, the results of 1,017 office workers were analyzed. The QUIK-R showed a high reliability and a high validity. There were significant correlations between the total score and the subject’s age, sex, smoking habit, sleeping time, and exercise. Forty-two subjects with a good QUIK-R score had poor physical examination results. Our results show the usefulness of the QUIK-R and the importance of measuring the QOL in health evaluations.

Abstract
Purpose The authors previously reported clinical and molecular features of a boy (at age 17) with enhanced S-cone syndrome (ESCS) who had bilateral cystoid maculopathies. The purpose of the current study was to describe the patient's optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings. Methods OCT was performed when the patient was 23 years old. Results OCT images revealed formations of single large hyporeflective cystic spaces in the cystoid maculopathies of both eyes. The cystic spaces were much larger than those of previously reported cases. In the temporal region of each cystic space, symmetric disorganized retinal lamination was observed with the retina lacking well-defined and hypoeflective bands of the inner nuclear layer and the outer nuclear layer, which are seen in normal retina. Splitting in the retinal thickness was at the level of the outer retinal layer rather than at the inner retinal layer in both eyes. Conclusions Splitting is likely to occur close to the outer plexiform layer in which the cleavage plane of familial juvenile retinoschisis is identified. The unique OCT manifestation of symmetric large macular retinoschisis with disorganized retinal lamination may indicate a severe form of ESCS.

Abstract
This paper presents a novel cell stretching micro device having two-dimensional array of micro chambers. It enables an in situ time-lapse observation of stretched cell by using an optical microscope with high measurement efficiency. The presented device consists of a cell culture dish and the array of micro chambers made of silicone elastomer and extension structures made of photocurable resin, and is fabricated with MEMS technology. The fabrication process of the thin micro chamber array combines photoresist mold and lift-off process based on conventional photolithography. The fabricated device has 134micro chambers in 5μm or less thickness. It was demonstrated that the fabricated micro device could be used to make in-situ time-lapse observation of cell responses to stretching under optical microscopy. In addition, the influence of the chamber thickness to the quality of the microscope image observed was evaluated. It is confirmed that the proposed device having two-dimensional array of the thin micro chambers makes it possible to observe cell response for stretch stimuli with high quality and efficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A number of studies have reported that frailty is cross-sectionally associated with cognitive decline and is also a risk for future cognitive decline or dementia; however, there have been only a few studies that focus on the association between prefrailty and cognitive dysfunction. In the current study, we investigated the association between prefrailty and cognition. DESIGN A cross-sectional study of the data obtained at registration in a randomized control trial. SETTING Toyota, Japan. PARTICIPANTS Community-dwelling older subjects (male 54.6%) who had cognitive complaints. MEASUREMENTS A battery of neuropsychological and physical assessments were performed. Prefrailty was defined as exhibiting one or two of the five Fried criteria (weight loss, exhaustion, weakness, slow gait speed and low physical activity). We performed a multiple regression analysis to investigate the associations of cognitive performance with prefrailty, adjusting for the factors that were significantly different between the robust and prefrailty groups. To assess the cognitive attributes that were significantly associated with prefrailty, logistic analysis was performed to see if one specific criterion of the five frailty criteria was associated with cognitive performance. RESULTS The study subjects included 183 prefrail and 264 robust individuals. The prefrail subjects with cognitive complaints were older, less educated, more depressive, and more likely to have diabetes mellitus than the robust subjects. The prefrail subjects had lower performance in a wide-range of cognitive domains, and after adjustments for age, education, depressive mood, and diabetes mellitus, prefrailty was associated with a decline in delayed memory and processing speed. Among the components of the Fried criteria, slow gait speed and loss of activity were significantly associated with slow processing speed as assessed by the digit symbol substitution test. CONCLUSION The current results demonstrated that prefrailty was associated with worse memory and processing speed performance, but not with other cognitive domains.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dermatophagoides farinae is a source of airborne house dust mite (HDM) allergens. We elucidated IgE-reactive allergens from D. farinae by two-dimensional immunoblotting-based allergenome analysis, and identified one new allergen, named Der f 35, that possesses IgE-binding capacity comparable to that of Der f 2. The aim of this study was to clarify the allergenic capacity of new HDM allergen Der f 35. METHODS We cloned der f 35 from D. farinae mRNA and produced recombinant Der f 35 in Escherichia coli. The IgE-binding capacity of Der f 35 and its cross-reactivity with group 2 allergens from D. farinae and Psoroptes ovis were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and ELISA inhibition assays, respectively. RESULTS The deduced amino acid sequence for der f 35, which possesses the MD-2-related lipid-recognition domain, showed higher identity with group 2 allergens from P. ovis (61.5%) and Blomia tropicalis (50.7%) than with Der f 2 (40.8%). Der f 35 showed IgE-binding frequencies of 77.5% (31/40) for the native form upon allergenome analysis and 51.4% (18/35) for recombinant structure by ELISA. Der f 35 showed cross-reactivity with Der f 2 and Pso o 2 in reaction with HDM-allergic patients' IgE by ELISA inhibition assay. CONCLUSION Der f 35 is a candidate major allergen from D. farinae, which is more similar to group 2 allergens from sheep scab mite and storage mites. Der f 35 could be responsible for the cross-reactivity among group 2 mite allergens.
