Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays a pivotal role in all stages of atherosclerosis. Since edema is known to be an integral part of inflammation, a noninvasive technique that can identify edema in the coronary artery wall may provide unique information regarding plaque activity. In this study, we aimed to determine whether edema induced in porcine coronary arteries by balloon injury could be reliably detected by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) using a water sensitive T2-weighted short tau inversion recovery sequence (T2-STIR). We also aimed to compare these results to those of conventional T2-weighted (T2W) imaging. METHODS Edema was induced in the proximal left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery wall in seven pigs by balloon injury. At baseline, and 1-10 days (average four) post injury, the proximal LAD was assessed by water sensitive T2-STIR and conventional T2W sequences in cross-sectional planes. CMR images were matched to histopathology, validated against Evans blue as a marker of increased vessel wall permeability, and correlated with the arterial amount of fibrinogen used as an edema surrogate marker. RESULTS Post injury, the T2-STIR images of the injured LAD vessel wall showed a significant 72%, relative signal intensity (SI) increase compared with baseline (p = 0.028). Using a threshold value of SI 7 SD above the average SI of the myocardium, T2-STIR detected edema in the vessel wall (i.e. enhancement) with a sensitivity of 100 and a specificity of 71. Twelve out of the 14 (86%) T2-STIR images displaying coronary artery wall enhancement also showed Evans blue uptake in the corresponding histology. The relative signal intensity showed a linear correlation with the amount of fibrinogen detected on the corresponding histopathology (ρ = 0.750, p = 0.05). The conventional T2W images did not show significant changes in SI post injury. CONCLUSION T2-STIR CMR enabled detection of coronary artery wall edema and could therefore be a non-invasive diagnostic tool for evaluation of inflammatory coronary artery wall activity.

Abstract
AIMS Exenatide, a glucagon-like-peptide-1 analogue, increases myocardial salvage in experimental settings with coronary occlusion and subsequent reperfusion. We evaluated the cardioprotective effect of exenatide at the time of reperfusion in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 172 patients with STEMI and Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction flow 0/1 were randomly assigned to exenatide or placebo (saline) intravenously. Study treatment was commenced 15 min before intervention and maintained for 6 h after the procedure. The primary endpoint was salvage index calculated from myocardial area at risk (AAR), measured in the acute phase, and final infarct size measured 90 ± 21 days after pPCI by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). In 105 patients evaluated with CMR, a significantly larger salvage index was found in the exenatide group than in the placebo group (0.71 ± 0.13 vs. 0.62 ± 0.16; P= 0.003). Infarct size in relation to AAR was also smaller in the exenatide group (0.30 ± 0.15 vs. 0.39 ± 0.15; P= 0.003). In a regression analysis, there was a significant correlation between the infarct size and the AAR for both treatment groups and an analysis of covariance showed that datapoints in the exenatide group lay significantly lower than for the placebo group (P= 0.011). There was a trend towards smaller absolute infarct size in the exenatide group (13 ± 9 vs. 17 ± 14 g; P= 0.11). No difference was observed in left ventricular function or 30-day clinical events. No adverse effects of exenatide were observed. CONCLUSION In patients with STEMI undergoing pPCI, administration of exenatide at the time of reperfusion increases myocardial salvage.

Abstract
Abstract
Dkk3 has tumor suppressor properties in various cancers. Recently, we reported that the mRNA level of Dkk3 gene was down-regulated by epigenetic alteration in cervical cancer and that forced expression of Dkk3 resulted in the growth inhibition of cervical cancer cells. The aim of this study was to assess the expression of Dkk3 protein in cervical cancer tissue and determine potential clinical correlations. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on 94 cervical cancer tissues. Clinical and pathological parameters were obtained from medical record. Survival data were estimated using Kaplan-Meier estimates and compared with log-rank test where indicated. Out of 94 tissue samples, negative, weak, moderate and high expression of Dkk3 were observed in 29 (30.9%), 31 (33.0%), 18 (19.1%) and 16 (17.0%) tissue samples. Dkk3 expression was negatively correlated with FIGO clinical stage (p<0.03, Mann-Whitney test). The 5-year disease free survival of patients with a negative or weak expression was significantly lower than that of those with moderate or high expression (70.6% versus 86.3%, respectively, p=0.04, log-rank test). The result of this study showed that down-regulation of Dkk3 is associated with advanced FIGO clinical stage and poor survival outcome of cervical cancer.

Abstract
This study compared the ability of the Zeus multifunctional anaesthesia system to control haemodynamic response to surgical stimulation in semi-closed (SCA) or closed circuit anaesthesia (CCA) modes. Fifty patients undergoing gynaecological surgery were randomly assigned to SCA or CCA. Anaesthesia was induced with 2 mg propofol and 0.9 mg/kg rocuronium, intravenously, and maintained using sevoflurane (minimum alveolar concentration [MAC], 1.0) using 2 l/min oxygen plus 2 l/min nitrous oxide (SCA 4 l/min group) or 50% oxygen plus 50% nitrous oxide (CCA group). An increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) > 20% above baseline in response to surgical stimulation provoked a stepwise increase in sevoflurane (1.3 MAC and then 1.6 MAC), followed by fentanyl 1 pg/kg intravenously (rescue drug). The time required for MAP to return to within 10% of baseline was significantly shorter in the CCA group (6.4 +/- 3.6 min) compared with the SCA 4 l/min group (10.2 +/- 6.0 min). The percentage of patients requiring fentanyl was significantly greater in the SCA 4 l/min group than in the CCA group. In conclusion, CCA controlled acute haemodynamic responses to surgical stimuli more successfully and rapidly than SCA 4 l/min, using a multifunctional anaesthesia machine.

Abstract
UNLABELLED A decrease in the number and dysfunction of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) may increase the risk for progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in type 1 diabetic patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN). Our aim was to evaluate EPC numbers in asymptomatic CVD type 1 diabetic patients with or without DN and to study the effect of CVD and medication on EPC numbers. METHODS We examined EPC numbers in 37 type 1 diabetic patients with DN and 35 type 1 diabetic patients with long-standing normoalbuminuria. Patients were without symptoms of CVD and the prevalence of CVD was previously shown to be very low. EPC number was assessed in in vitro cultures by fluorescent staining of attached cells. RESULTS There was no difference in EPC numbers between patients with DN (mean ± SD 120 ± 49 cells/field) and normoalbuminuria (108 ± 41 cells/field; p = 0.25). Furthermore, EPC number was not associated with CVD (p > 0.05). Conventional risk factors were significantly higher in patients with DN and they received more CVD-preventive treatment. All patients receiving simvastatin or calcium-channel blockers had higher numbers of EPC compared to patients not treated with these drugs. CONCLUSIONS Asymptomatic patients with DN had EPC numbers similar to normoalbuminuric patients, which was related to aggressive CVD intervention therapy. This may have contributed to the low prevalence of CVD.

Abstract
U12 introns are removed from precursor-mRNA by a U12 intron-specific spliceosome that contains U11 and U12 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins. Although several proteins unique to the U12-type spliceosome have been identified, the manner by which they affect U12-dependent intron splicing as well as plant growth and development remain largely unknown. Here, we assessed the role of U11/U12-31K, a U12-type spliceosomal protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. T-DNA-tagged homozygote lines for U11/U12-31K could not be obtained, and heterozygote mutants were defective for seed maturation, indicating that U11/U12-31K is essential for the normal development of Arabidopsis. Knockdown of U11/U12-31K by artificial microRNA caused a defect in proper U12 intron splicing, resulting in abnormal stem growth and development of Arabidopsis. This defect in proper splicing was not restricted to specific U12-type introns, but most U12 intron splicing was influenced by U11/U12-31K. The stunted inflorescence stem growth was recovered by exogenously applied gibberellic acid (GA), but not by cytokinin, auxin, or brassinosteroid. GA metabolism-related genes were highly downregulated in U11/U12-31K knockdown plants. Importantly, U11/U12-31K was determined to harbor RNA chaperone activity. We propose that U11/U12-31K is an RNA chaperone that is indispensible for proper U12 intron splicing and for normal growth and development of plants.

Abstract
This study sought to study the effect of high intensity aerobic interval endurance training on peak stroke volume and maximal strength training on mechanical efficiency in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. 8 CAD patients (age 61.4 ± 3.7 years) trained 30 interval training sessions with 4 × 4 min intervals at 85-95% of peak heart rate while 10 CAD patients (age 66.5 ± 5.5 years) trained 24 sessions of maximal horizontal leg press. In the interval training group peak stroke volume increased significantly by 23% from 94.1 ± 23.0 mL · beat (-1) to 115.8 ± 22.4 mL · beat (-1) (p<0.05). Peak oxygen uptake increased significantly by 17% from 27.2 ± 4.5 mL · kg (-1) · min (-1) to 31.8 ± 5.0 mL · kg (-1) min (-1) (p<0.05) in the same group. In contrast, there was no such exercise training-induced change in peak stroke volume or peak oxygen uptake in the maximal strength training group, despite a 35% improvement in sub maximal walking performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical significance of the Enterobacter nimipressuralis as human pathogens remains unclear. CASE PRESENTATIONS The microbiologic culture monitoring system of sterile body fluids revealed on an episode of Enterobacter cloacae and Enterobacter amnigenus in blood culture results on the same day; the antibiotic sensitivity and MIC were nearly the same for both species. First patient was a healthy woman with postmenopausal syndrome, while second patient with herpes zoster. Both patients had febrile sensations without signs of bacteremia. E. amnigenus was also cultured from the unused package of salined cotton in the container through epidemiologic investigation. The cultured Enterobacter species were all identified as E. nimipressuralis through hsp60 gene sequencing and infrequent-restriction-site PCR (IRS-PCR). CONCLUSION When an unusual microorganisms such as E. nimipressuralis is isolated from blood of a patient with no clinical signs of sepsis, a pseudobacteremia should be suspected. When the antibiogram and MIC test results of bacterial cultures from two or more patients are nearly the same, although the species involved may appear different, it may be necessary to prove that they are the same species through molecular methods. The microbiologic cultures monitoring system will probably help to detect pseudobacteremia and other pseudo infections through reliable and fast identification.

Abstract
Among the three zinc finger-containing glycine-rich RNA-binding proteins, named AtRZ-1a, AtRZ-1b, and AtRZ-1c, in the Arabidopsis thaliana genome, AtRZ-1a has previously been shown to enhance cold and freezing tolerance in Arabidopsis. Here, we determined and compared the functional roles of AtRZ-1b and AtRZ-1c in Arabidopsis and Escherichia coli under cold stress conditions. AtRZ-1b, but not AtRZ-1c, successfully complemented the cold sensitivity of E. coli BX04 mutant cells lacking four cold shock proteins. Domain deletion and site-directed mutagenesis showed that the zinc finger motif of AtRZ-1b is important for its complementation ability, and that the truncated N- and C-terminal domains of AtRZ-1b and AtRZ-1c harbor the complementation ability. Despite an increase in transcript levels of AtRZ-1b and AtRZ-1c under cold stress, overexpression or loss-of-function mutations did not affect seed germination or seedling growth of Arabidopsis under cold stress conditions. AtRZ-1b and AtRZ-1c proteins, being localized to the nucleus, have been shown to bind non-specifically to RNA sequences in vitro, in comparison to AtRZ-1a that is localized to both the nucleus and the cytoplasm and binds preferentially to G- or U-rich RNA sequences. Taken together, these results demonstrate that the three AtRZ-1 family members showing different cellular localization and characteristic nucleic acid-binding property have a potential to contribute differently to the enhancement of cold tolerance in Arabidopsis and E. coli.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been strong recent interest in the association between serum ferritin concentrations and increased risk of cardiovascular events. Surplus nutrition and convenience-seeking behavior has contributed to emergence of an increasingly obese population, with a concurrent increase in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. To date, few studies have specifically examined the association between serum ferritin and aortic stiffness in healthy populations, thus we investigated the association between serum ferritin and aortic stiffness according to sex and obesity in healthy subjects. METHODS AND RESULTS From a register of 196 healthy subjects (146 males, 50 females) 23 to 76 years of age, we measured BMI, serum ferritin, blood pressures, metabolic variables, and brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). The average baPWV, serum ferritin and the sociodemographic prevalence (smoking, alcohol, and exercise) were higher in men than women. There was a positive association between serum ferritin and baPWV (R = 0.02) in total subjects after adjusting for age, sex, and blood pressures. The association between serum ferritin and baPWV (R = 0.099) in women was positive, yet negative in men (R = -0.007). The average baPWV and serum ferritin were highest in obese men, on the other hand lowest in nonobese women among 4 groups according to sex and obesity. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, there was a stronger association between serum ferritin and PWV in healthy Korean women than men. Our finding suggests that cardiovascular risk factor monitoring through baPWV should be considered for even apparently healthy Korean women.

Abstract
Contrary to the increasing amount of knowledge regarding the functional roles of glycine-rich RNA-binding proteins (GRPs) in Arabidopsis thaliana in stress responses, the physiological functions of GRPs in rice (Oryza sativa) currently remain largely unknown. In this study, the functional roles of six OsGRPs from rice on the growth of E. coli and plants under cold or freezing stress conditions have been evaluated. Among the six OsGRPs investigated, OsGRP1, OsGRP4, and OsGRP6 were shown to have the ability to complement cold-sensitive BX04 E. coli mutant cells under low temperature conditions, and this complementation ability was correlated closely with their DNA- and RNA-melting abilities. Moreover, OsGRP1 and OsGRP4 rescued the growth-defect of a cold-sensitive Arabidopsis grp7 mutant plant under cold and freezing stress, and OsGRP6 conferred freezing tolerance in the grp7 mutant plant, in which the expression of AtGRP7 was suppressed and is sensitive to cold and freezing stresses. OsGRP4 and OsGRP6 complemented the defect in mRNA export from the nucleus to the cytoplasm in grp7 mutants during cold stress. Considering that AtGRP7 confers freezing tolerance in plants and harbours RNA chaperone activity during the cold adaptation process, the results of the present study provide evidence that GRPs in rice and Arabidopsis are functionally conserved, and also suggest that GRPs perform a function as RNA chaperones during the cold adaptation process in monocotyledonous plants, as well as in dicotyledonous plants.

This clinical study compared induction time, consumed anaesthetic dose, and haemodynamic and recovery profiles when using a new type of multifunctional anaesthesia machine (Zeus®) in semi-closed or closed circuit modes. Sixty female patients undergoing gynaecological surgery were randomly assigned to three groups and received desflurane anaesthesia through a semi-closed circuit (SCC) at fresh gas flow rates of 4 l/min (SCC 4 l/min) or 2 l/min (SCC 2 l/min), or through a closed circuit (CC). Anaesthesia was maintained at the minimum alveolar concentration for blocking the adrenergic response to painful stimulus (MACBAR) (4.6% end-tidal desflurane) during each operation. The time required to reach MACBAR was significantly shorter and the dose of desflurane was significantly smaller in the CC group compared with the other groups. There were no differences in haemodynamic and recovery profiles between the groups. It is concluded that the CC mode allowed a faster and more reliable induction, lower anaesthetic consumption and stable haemodynamic and recovery profiles.

Abstract
Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) have emerged as a new strategy for cancer treatment. In the present study, we determined the effects of IAA/HRP treatment on TCCSUP human urinary bladder carcinoma cells. It was found that the IAA/HRP combination decreased cell viability of TCCSUP cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner, whereas IAA or HRP alone showed no such effect. In addition, the decreased cell viability was restored by pretreatment with ascorbic acid. To clarify the mechanism of death of TCCSUP cells by IAA/HRP, we investigated the signal transduction pathways related to the apoptosis. It was found that IAA/HRP activates p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). We further investigated the IAA/HRP-mediated apoptotic pathways and showed that IAA/HRP induces caspase-8 and caspase-9 activation, which results in caspase-3 activation and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage. To further confirm whether IAA/HRP induces apoptotic cell death, we performed a DNA fragmentation assay after IAA/HRP treatment and found that IAA/HRP-treated cells showed typical apoptotic DNA ladder formation. From these results, we suggest that IAA/HRP induces apoptosis of TCCSUP human urinary bladder carcinoma cells via both death receptor-mediated and mitochondrial apoptotic pathways.

Abstract
The k-t broad-use linear acquisition speed-up technique (BLAST) has become widespread for reducing image acquisition time in dynamic MRI. In its basic form k-t BLAST speeds up the data acquisition by undersampling k-space over time (referred to as k-t space). The resulting aliasing is resolved in the Fourier reciprocal x-f space (x = spatial position, f = temporal frequency) using an adaptive filter derived from a low-resolution estimate of the signal covariance. However, this filtering process tends to increase the reconstruction error or lower the achievable acceleration factor. This is problematic in applications exhibiting a broad range of temporal frequencies such as free-breathing myocardial perfusion imaging. We show that temporal basis functions calculated by subjecting the training data to principal component analysis (PCA) can be used to constrain the reconstruction such that the temporal resolution is improved. The presented method is called k-t PCA.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a multifunctional steroid that is increasingly available as a supplement aimed at improving libido and well-being in postmenopausal women in the recent times. Together with its sulfate version, DHEA-sulfate (DHEAS), it is the most abundant steroid in humans. The clitoris is an important component of the female sexual response, with its increased vascular response during sexual arousal that results in erection. AIMS To elucidate the direct effects of DHEA/DHEAS on the vasomotor reactivity of the rabbit clitoral cavernosum. METHODS Twenty New Zealand white female rabbits weighing approximately 2.5-3 kg were used in the study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The contractile response of clitoral cavernous smooth muscle strips in response to phenylephrine (PE; 10(-9)-10(-4) M) were observed in rabbits. Additionally, DHEA/DHEAS effects on phenylephrine-induced contraction and/or acetylcholine-induced relaxation of phenylephrine-induced contraction were measured. RESULTS DHEA/DHEAS did not elicit any remarkable response in the resting state. However, both DHEA and DHEAS evoked dose-dependent relaxations of PE-induced contraction. The contractile responses to high potassium were significantly decreased in the DHEA/DHEAS-pretreated strips, compared with the DHEA/DHEAS-nontreated strips. Additionally, contractions by Bay K 8644 (10(-7)-10(-6) M) treatment were also significantly inhibited by DHEA/DHEAS. DHEA-induced relaxation responses were stronger than DHEAS-induced relaxation responses. Various K channel blockers, tetraethylammonium (TEA; 1 mM, 10 mM), 4-aminopyridine (10 microM) and glibenclamide (10 microM) did not affect the DHEA/DHEAS-induced relaxation on muscle strips contracted by PE. Relaxation responses by acetylcholine or sodium nitroprusside (SNP) were not changed after DHEA/DHEAS pretreatment. CONCLUSIONS DHEA/DHEAS was found to induce a relaxation response in rabbit clitoral cavernosal smooth muscle, and this is thought to be mediated by direct inhibition of a voltage-dependent calcium channel.

Abstract
The ezrin-radixin-moesin (ERM) proteins are a family of widely distributed membrane-associated proteins and have been implicated not only in cell-shape determination but also in signaling pathway. The nucleus accumbens (NAcc) is an important neuronal substrate mediating the effects of drugs of abuse. However, it has not been determined yet how ERM proteins are regulated in this site by drugs of abuse. Here we show in rat that the phosphorylation levels of ERM protein are dose- and time-dependently decreased in the NAcc by a single injection of cocaine (15 or 30 mg/kg i.p.). Further, we show that the amount of active RhoA, a small GTPase protein, is significantly reduced in the NAcc by cocaine, while the phosphorylation levels of ERM protein are also decreased by bilateral microinjections in this site of the Rho kinase inhibitors. Together, these results suggest that cocaine reduces phosphorylated ERM levels in the NAcc by making downregulation of RhoA-Rho kinase signaling, which may importantly contribute to initiate synaptic changes in this site leading to drug addiction.

Abstract
In cementless revision total hip arthroplasty (THA), achieving initial implant stability and maximising host bone contact is key to the success of reconstruction. Porous tantalum acetabular shells may represent an improvement from conventional porous coated uncemented cups in revision acetabular reconstruction associated with severe acetabular bone defects. We reviewed the results of 46 acetabular revisions with Paprosky 2 and 3 acetabular bone defects done with a hemispheric, tantalum acetabular shell and multiple supplementary screws. At a mean follow-up of 40 (24-51) months, one acetabular shell had been revised in a patient with a Paprosky 3B defect. Cementless acetabular revision with the tantalum acetabular shell demonstrated excellent early clinical and radiographic results and warrants further evaluation in revision acetabular reconstruction associated with severe acetabular bone defects.

Abstract
Urinary tract infections are common clinical problems in children, even though lots of treatment strategies have been tried. Many studies of the application of probiotics for urinary tract infection in female adults exist, but there is a lack of studies in children. The aims of this study were to screen probiotic strains for inhibiting the uropathogens in vitro, to find candidates for in vivo study. Nine strains of E. coli were isolated from children with urinary tract infection and six uropathogens were obtained from Korean Collection for Type Cultures and American Type Culture Collection. Also 135 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains were isolated from healthy children, and were identified through physiologic, biochemical methods, 16S rDNA PCR, and data analysis. And with agar disk diffusion assay technique the antimicrobial activities of these LAB strains against those uropathogens were examined. Three strains of separated LAB strains demonstrated major antimicrobial activity against all the uropathogens. In the agar disk diffusion assay technique, antimicrobial activities increased most in the 4th day culture broth with separated Lactobacillus. In summary, some LAB can be used as candidates to develop the probiotic microorganisms that inhibit uropathogens in children, and are expected to be applied to treatment and prevention of pediatric urinary tract infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine if HPV DNA testing improves the accuracy of detecting possible high-grade cervical lesions in women with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). METHODS Cervical cytology and Hybrid Capture II (HCII) assay for HPV DNA detection was performed in 10,526 women from July 2005 to July 2007. Two hundred and sixty women with ASC-US underwent colposcopy-directed biopsy to determine the final histologic diagnosis. They were divided into two groups according to the positivity of the HPV DNA test, and the respective biopsy results were compared. RESULTS Positive HCII was significantly more associated with CIN 2, CIN 3, and invasive cancer than negative HCII (p < 0.001). The odds ratio of positive HPV DNA testing in detecting high-grade lesions was 7.0 (95% CI; 2.8-17.7). CONCLUSION The HPV DNA test is useful for predicting the severity of lesions of the uterine cervix and formulating decisions with regard to treatment plans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our aim was to know preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can accurately predict lymph node metastasis (LNM) and deep myometrial invasion (DMI, > or = 50%) in patients with uterine cancer. METHODS From January 1997 to December 2006, 99 patients who were diagnosed with uterine cancer and surgically staged at our institution were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative clinicopathologic characteristics and MRI findings were reviewed and compared with LNM status and DMI observed in the final pathology. RESULTS The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive values (NPV) for MRI in determination of pelvic LNM were 77.7%, 85.6%, 35.0%, and 94.7%, respectively. MRI failed to detect the presence of paraaortic LNM in all of the three patients with positive paraaortic lymph nodes. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV for MRI in determining DMI were 46.6%, 84.5%, 35%, and 89.8%, respectively. CONCLUSION Preoperative evaluation of uterine cancer by MRI does not accurately predict the LNM and DMI.
