Controllable Fabrication of PdO-PdAu Ternary Hollow Shells: Synergistic Acceleration of H2 -Sensing Speed via Morphology Regulation and Electronic Structure Modulation

Designing ultrafast H₂ sensors is of particular importance for practical applications of hydrogen energy but still quite challenging. Herein, PdO decorated PdAu ternary hollow shells (PdO-PdAu HSs) exhibiting an ultrafast response of ≈0.9 s to 1% H₂ in air at room temperature are presented. PdO-PdAu HSs are fabricated by calcinating PdAu bimetallic HSs in air to form PdO-Au binary HSs, which are then partially reduced by NaBH₄ solution, forming PdO-PdAu HSs. This ternary hybrid material takes advantage of multiple aspects to synergistically accelerate the sensing speed. The HS morphology promises high gas accessibility and high surface area for H₂ adsorption, and decoration of Au and PdO alters the electronic state of Pd and reduces the energy barrier for hydrogen diffusing from the surface site of Pd into the subsurface site. The content of Au and PdO in the ternary HSs can be simply tuned, which offers the possibility to optimize their promotion effects to reach the best performance. The proposed fabrication strategy sheds light on the rational design of ultrafast Pd-based H₂ sensors by controlling the sensor structure and engineering the electronic state of active species.

Multi-sequence MR generated sCT is promising for HNC MR-only RT: a comprehensive evaluation of previously developed sCT generation networks

PURPOSE

To verify the feasibility of our in-house developed multi-sequence magnetic resonance (MR)-generated synthetic computed tomography (sCT) for the accurate dose calculation and fractional positioning for head and neck MR-only radiation therapy (RT).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty-five patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were retrospectively studied. By applying our previously in-house developed network, a patient's sCT can rapidly be generated with respect to feeding the sole T1 image, T1C image, T1DixonC image, T2 image, and their combination respectively (five pipelines in total). A k(5)-fold strategy was implemented during model establishment. Dose recalculation was performed for each pipeline generation to attain a dosimetric feasibility evaluation. Fractional positioning evaluation was performed by calculating the digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR) of the sCT and planning CT and their offset to the portal image.

RESULTS

The dose mean absolute error values are (0.47±0.16)%, (0.48±0.15)% (p<0.05), (0.50±0.16)% (p<0.05), (0.50±0.15)% (p<0.05), and (0.45±0.16)% (p<0.05) for the T1, T1C, T1Dixon C, T2, and 4-channel generated sCT to the prescription dose, respectively. The 4-channel-generated sCT outperforms any other single-sequence pipelines. Among the single-sequence MR imaging-generated sCTs, the T1-generated shows the most accurate HU image quality and provide a reliable dose result. Quantified positioning errors with calculation of the difference to the planning CT offsets are (-0.26±0.50)mm, (-0.58±0.52)mm (p<0.05), (-0.27±0.57)mm (p>0.05), (-0.31±0.44)mm (p>0.05), and (-0.19±0.37)mm (p>0.05) at LNG and (0.34±0.53)mm, (0.48±0.56)mm (p>0.05), (0.55±0.56)mm (p>0.05), (0.37±0.61)mm (p>0.05), and (0.24±0.43)mm (p>0.05) at LAT of the anterior-posterior direction for the five pipelines.

CONCLUSION

Multi-sequence MR-generated sCT allows for accurate dose calculation and fractional positioning for head and neck MR-only RT. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT Collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of ^{235}U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the ^{235}U spectral shape to about 3%. The ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Joint Measurement of the ^{235}U Antineutrino Spectrum by PROSPECT and STEREO

The PROSPECT and STEREO collaborations present a combined measurement of the pure ^{235}U antineutrino spectrum, without site specific corrections or detector-dependent effects. The spectral measurements of the two highest precision experiments at research reactors are found to be compatible with χ^{2}/ndf=24.1/21, allowing a joint unfolding of the prompt energy measurements into antineutrino energy. This ν[over ¯]_{e} energy spectrum is provided to the community, and an excess of events relative to the Huber model is found in the 5-6 MeV region. When a Gaussian bump is fitted to the excess, the data-model χ^{2} value is improved, corresponding to a 2.4σ significance.

Identification of Chilling Accumulation-Associated Genes for Litchi Flowering by Transcriptome-Based Genome-Wide Association Studies

Litchi is an important Sapindaceae fruit tree. Flowering in litchi is triggered by low temperatures in autumn and winter. It can be divided into early-, medium-, and late-flowering phenotypes according to the time for floral induction. Early-flowering varieties need low chilling accumulation level for floral induction, whereas the late-flowering varieties require high chilling accumulation level. In the present study, RNA-Seq of 87 accessions was performed and transcriptome-based genome-wide association studies (GWAS) was used to identify candidate genes involved in chilling accumulation underlying the time for floral induction. A total of 98,155 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites were obtained. A total of 1,411 significantly associated SNPs and 1,115 associated genes (AGs) were identified, of which 31 were flowering-related, 23 were hormone synthesis-related, and 27 were hormone signal transduction-related. Association analysis between the gene expression of the AGs and the flowering phenotypic data was carried out, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in a temperature-controlled experiment were obtained. As a result, 15 flowering-related candidate AGs (CAGs), 13 hormone synthesis-related CAGs, and 11 hormone signal transduction-related CAGs were further screened. The expression levels of the CAGs in the early-flowering accessions were different from those in the late-flowering ones, and also between the flowering trees and non-flowering trees. In a gradient chilling treatment, flowering rates of the trees and the CAGs expression were affected by the treatment. Our present work for the first time provided candidate genes for genetic regulation of flowering in litchi using transcriptome-based GWAS.

The edible seaweed Laminaria japonica contains cholesterol analogues that inhibit lipid peroxidation and cyclooxygenase enzymes

In this study, 5 sterols were isolated and purified from Laminaria japonica, commonly known as edible brown seaweed, and their structures were identified based on detailed chemical methods and spectroscopic analyses. Spectroscopic analyses characterized 5 sterols as 29-Hydroperoxy-stigmasta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol, saringosterol (24-vinyl-cholest-5-ene-3β,24-diol), 24-methylenecholesterol, fucosterol (stigmasta-5,24-diene-3β-ol), and 24-Hydroperoxy-24-vinyl-cholesterol. The bioactivities of these sterols were tested using lipid peroxidation (LPO) and cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and -2) enzyme inhibitory assays. Fucosterol exhibited the highest COX-1 and -2 enzyme inhibitory activities at 59 and 47%, respectively. Saringosterol, 24-methylenecholesterol and fucosterol showed higher LPO inhibitory activity at >50% than the other compounds. In addition, the results of molecular docking revealed that the 5 sterols were located in different pocket of COX-1 and -2 and fucosterol with tetracyclic skeletons and olefin methine achieved the highest binding energy (-7.85 and -9.02 kcal/mol) through hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bond. Our results confirm the presence of 5 sterols in L. japonica and its significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.

Malnutrition Increases the Risk of Left Ventricular Remodeling

OBJECTIVES

Malnutrition is associated with increased incidence of heart failure (HF). Left ventricular (LV) remodeling is one of the most important processes in the occurrence and evolution of HF. However, the association between nutritional status and LV remodeling is not well known. The study aimed to investigate the association between malnutrition and LV remodeling.

DESIGN

The study was a retrospective observation study.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

We included patients from the registry of Cardiorenal Improvement study from January 2007 to December 2018 at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital.

MEASUREMENTS

The primary endpoint was LV remodeling, defined as an absolute decrease in LV ejection fraction ≥10% after discharge compared with baseline. Nutritional status was assessed by the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score. Eligible patients were divided into absent-mild malnutrition group (CONUT score ≤4) and moderate-severe malnutrition group (CONUT score >4). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression was performed to verify the association between malnutrition and left ventricular remodeling.

RESULTS

A total of 7,217 patients (mean age 61.3±10.5 years, 71.7% male) were included in the final analysis, among which 712 (9.9%) had LV remodeling. The incidence of LV remodeling in moderate-severe malnutrition group was significantly higher than that in absent-mild malnutrition group (12.9% vs. 9.5%, p=0.002). In multivariable logistic regression, moderate-severe malnutrition group was significantly associated with 1.69-fold increased risk of LV remodeling after adjusting confounders (OR: 1.69, CI: 1.32-2.16). Similar results were observed in subgroup stratified by age, gender, and coronary artery disease.

CONCLUSION

Nearly one eighth of patients were classified as moderate-severe malnutrition, 12% of whom had LV remodeling. Moderate-severe malnutrition was associated with 69% increased risk of LV remodeling. Further studies are needed to prospectively evaluate the nutrition-oriented managements on outcomes in LV remodeling.

Association of Loss of Occlusal Pairs of Teeth with Sarcopenia in a Chinese Population of Community-Dwelling Elderly

OBJECTIVES

Tooth loss, which usually leads to malnutrition, is common in the elderly. However, limited information is available regarding its association with sarcopenia. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between loss of occlusal pairs of tooth and sarcopenia.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional retrospective study was performed.

SETTING

The elderly who participated in the National Basic Public Health Project in the Maigaoqiao Community Medical Center in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 2850 individuals aged ≥60 years were enrolled.

MEASUREMENTS

Sarcopenia was defined according to the criteria proposed by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. A trained dentist assessed oral health status and counted the number of present teeth. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between the loss of occlusal pairs and sarcopenia.

RESULTS

The prevalence of sarcopenia was 7.1% (201/2850). Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that loss of occlusal pairs was associated with sarcopenia [anterior occlusal pairs (AOPs): odd ratio (OR) = 1.292, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.158-1.442; posterior occlusal pairs (POPs): OR = 1.147, 95% CI = 1.018-1.221]. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that loss of POPs was still an independent risk for sarcopenia (OR = 1.108, 95% CI = 1.007-1.220) after adjustment for traditional confounders. Subgroup analysis showed that loss of POPs was more significantly linked to sarcopenia in those with advanced age (≥80years) (OR = 1.307, 95% CI = 1.116-1.532) and in females (OR = 1.165, 95%CI = 1.038-1.308). Compared to individuals with ≥5 occluding pairs of POPs, those with <5 occluding pairs of POPs had a higher incidence of sarcopenia.

CONCLUSIONS

Loss of POPs is associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia in the elderly in a Chinese population. Further research on the mechanism of the observed causal relationship is needed.

Construction of a prognostic classifier and prediction of the immune landscape and immunosuppressive molecules in gliomas based on combination of inflammatory response-related genes and angiogenesis-associated genes

Objective:We aimed to combine inflammatory response-related genes (IRRGs) and angiogenesis-associated genes (AAGs) to build a prognostic classifier and to predict immune landscapes and immunosuppressive molecules in gliomas.

Introduction: Gliomas, the commonest primary brain tumors, account for about 80% of cancerous tumors in the central nervous system (CNS), featuring rapid progression, high malignancy, and extremely poor prognosis. The induction of inflammatory responses and angiogenesis have been considered to be closely related to tumors. However, there are little publications systematically elaborating on their impacts on gliomas.

Methods: We downloaded the data of IRRGs and AAGs from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) databases, and retrieved 68 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), of which 13 DEGs pertained to the prognosis of glioma cases. Next, 9 DEGs were screened from the 13 major DEGs with predictive significance and utilized to build a 9-gene signature as a prognostic risk score model (PRSM) with the aid of univariate Cox regression analyses (CRA) and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)-CRA. On this basis, glioma patients fell into high-risk (HR) group and low-risk (LR) group. Later, we implemented Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA, Gene Set: WP_ANGIOGENESIS) and calculate the scores of cell infiltration and immune-associated function by harnessing single-sample GSEA (ssGSEA).

Results: The prognosis was compared between the two groups by introducing Kaplan-Meier (KM) analysis, which yielded that HR group exhibited poorer prognosis. Additionally, the predictive capacity and independent characteristics were proven by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and multivariate CRA. Further, We took an evaluation of immune profiles, which unraveled that immunosuppressive cell count was distinctively larger in HS group. Finally, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of DEGs was built, and 10 hub genes were obtained, of which epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was closely related to poor prognosis.

Conclusion: A 9-gene signature was established on the strength of IRRGs and AAGs for predicting glioma prognosis, tumor microenvironment (TME), immune landscapes and immunosuppressive molecules. However, the molecular mechanism developed by this signature to function in tumor immunity needs further experimental research in the future and is expected to be a research target for glioma immunotherapy strategies.

The highly efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural on copper nanocrystalline/carbon hybrid catalysts: structure–function relations

The Cu species in Cu(NSD)/CP exhibit a high electrochemical specific surface area, which allows efficient transformation from Cu0 and Cu1+ species to Cu2+ with high catalytic capacity, resulting in excellent catalytic performance (96% yield of FDCA).

Topical Zhiyang Pingfu Liquid for Moderate to Severe Skin Rash Associated With EGFRIs: A double-blinded randomized controlled trial

Background:

Skin rash is the most common adverse effect associated with epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs). The study has observed the efficacy and safety of Zhiyang Pingfu Liquid in the treatment of EGFRIs-related moderate and severe rash.

Methods:

Patients suffering from EGFRIs-related moderate to severe rash were enrolled and then randomly divided into the treatment group and the control group, receiving Zhiyang Pingfu Liquid and placebo liquid respectively combined with minocycline and methylprednisolone recommended by guideline for 14 days. Changes in rash grades were observed, as well as the dosage of minocycline. Blood routine examination and liver and kidney function were evaluated to observe the safety of Zhiyang Pingfu Liquid. The total response of rash included complete response (CR) and partial response (PR). And the effective rate of rash was the percentage of CR and PR in the total cases.

Results:

A total of 54 out of 58 patients finished the study with 27 patients in each group. The effective rates of rash among the treatment group and the control group were 81.48% and 55.56% after 14 days treatment ( P = .040). The treatment group had a lower dosage of minocycline compared with the control group. The median total dose of oral minocycline administration was 1000 mg in the treatment group and 1400 mg in the control group.

Conclusion:

Zhiyang Pingfu Liquid can effectively improve the moderate and severe EGFRIs-induced rash, and reduce the use of minocycline, as well as the side reactions brought by minocycline. However, larger randomized controlled trials are needed to verify these findings.

Integrative Analysis of the Gut Microbiota and Metabolome for In Vitro Human Gut Fermentation Modeling

This study aimed to find the best in vitro fermentation method by integrative analysis of the gut microbiota and metabolome. We selected five different media: brain heart infusion broth, Luria-Bertani broth, Mueller-Hinton broth, anaerobe basal broth, and anaerobic medium base (AMB). After in vitro fermentation, the gut microbiota and metabolites were analyzed at different culture times. The results showed that different culture media have different effects on the bacterial community structure and metabolites. The integrative analysis of gut microbiota and metabolism also proved that AMB medium is effective in keeping a stable bacterial community structure and producing less metabolites and short-chain fatty acids by simulating the nutrient-poor microenvironment in the human gut during in vitro fermentation. Thus, culturing with AMB medium for 48 h is the most suitable in vitro model for human gut microbiota fermentation, which provides an alternative approach for diet and health research.

Association of serum hepatitis B virus RNA with hepatocellular carcinoma risk in chronic hepatitis B patients under nucleos(t)ide analogues therapy

BACKGROUND

Whether serum hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA associates with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients has not been fully elucidated.

METHODS

We enrolled 2974 patients receiving nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) from a prospective, observational CHB cohort to investigate the effect of serum HBV RNA, measured at study entry (baseline), on HCC development, using Cox regression analyses.

RESULTS

During median follow-up of 4.4 years, 90 patients developed HCC. Patients with detectable baseline HBV RNA (n=2072) exhibited significantly higher HCC risk than those with undetectable level (5-year HCC incidence estimated by Kaplan-Meier method: 4.1% versus 1.8%, P=0.007; adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]=2.21, P=0.005). HBV RNA levels of 609-99,999 and ≥100,000 copies/ml were associated with incrementally increasing HCC risk (aHR=2.15 and 3.05, respectively; P for trend=0.003), compared to undetectable level (<609 copies/ml). Moreover, patients with single-detectable either HBV DNA or RNA and double-detectable DNA and RNA had 1.57- and 4.02-fold higher HCC risk respectively, than those with double undetectable DNA and RNA (P for trend=0.001).

CONCLUSION

High-level HBV RNA is associated with increased HCC risk in NAs-treated patients. Achieving undetectable HBV RNA may contribute to better clinical outcomes, indicating it could be a valuable endpoint of anti-HBV treatment.

Molecular basis of enzymatic nitrogen-nitrogen formation by a family of zinc-binding cupin enzymes

Molecules with a nitrogen-nitrogen (N-N) bond in their structures exhibit various biological activities and other unique properties. A few microbial proteins are recently emerging as dedicated N-N bond forming enzymes in natural product biosynthesis. However, the details of these biochemical processes remain largely unknown. Here, through in vitro biochemical characterization and computational studies, we report the molecular basis of hydrazine bond formation by a family of di-domain enzymes. These enzymes are widespread in bacteria and sometimes naturally exist as two standalone enzymes. We reveal that the methionyl-tRNA synthase-like domain/protein catalyzes ATP-dependent condensation of two amino acids substrates to form a highly unstable ester intermediate, which is subsequently captured by the zinc-binding cupin domain/protein and undergoes redox-neutral intramolecular rearrangement to give the N-N bond containing product. These results provide important mechanistic insights into enzymatic N-N bond formation and should facilitate future development of novel N-N forming biocatalyst.

Mechanistic Investigation of Drug Supersaturation in the Presence of Polysorbates as Solubilizing Additives by Solution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

The introduction of solubilizing additives has historically been an attractive approach to address the ever-growing proportion of poorly water-soluble drug (PWSD) compounds within the modern drug discovery pipeline. Lipid-formulations, and more specifically micelle formulations, have garnered particular interest because of their simplicity, size, scalability, and avoidance of solid-state limitations. Although micelle formulations have been widely utilized, the molecular mechanism of drug solubilization in surfactant micelles is still poorly understood. In this study, a series of modern nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods are utilized to gain a molecular-level understanding of intermolecular interactions and kinetics in a model system. This approach enabled the understanding of how a PWSD, 17β-Estradiol (E2), solubilizes within a nonionic micelle system composed of polysorbate 80 (PS80). Based on one-dimensional (1D) ¹H chemical shift differences of E2 in PS80 solutions, as well as intermolecular correlations established from 1D selective nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) and two-dimensional NOE spectroscopy experiments, E2 was found to accumulate within the palisade layer of PS80 micelles. A potential hydrogen-bonding interaction between a hydroxyl group of E2 and a carbonyl group of PS80 alkane chains may allow for stabilizing E2-PS80 mixed micelles. Diffusion and relaxation NMR analysis and particle size measurements using dynamic light scattering indicate a slight increase in the micellar size with increasing degrees of supersaturation, resulting in slower mobility of the drug molecule. Based on these structural findings, a theoretical orientation model of E2 molecules with PS80 molecules was developed and validated by computational docking simulations.

Deep learning-based 3Din vivodose reconstruction with an electronic portal imaging device for magnetic resonance-linear accelerators: a proof of concept study

Objective.To develop a novel deep learning-based 3Din vivodose reconstruction framework with an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) for magnetic resonance-linear accelerators (MR-LINACs).Approach.The proposed method directly back-projected 2D portal dose into 3D patient coarse dose, which bypassed the complicated patient-to-EPID scatter estimation step used in conventional methods. A pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) was then employed to map the coarse dose to the final accurate dose. The electron return effect caused by the magnetic field was captured with the CNN model. Patient dose and portal dose datasets were synchronously generated with Monte Carlo simulation for 96 patients (78 cases for training and validation and 18 cases for testing) treated with fixed-beam intensity-modulated radiotherapy in four different tumor sites, including the brain, nasopharynx, lung, and rectum. Beam angles from the training dataset were further rotated 2-3 times, and doses were recalculated to augment the datasets.Results.The comparison between reconstructed doses and MC ground truth doses showed mean absolute errors <0.88% for all tumor sites. The averaged 3Dγ-passing rates (3%, 2 mm) were 97.42%±2.66% (brain), 98.53%±0.95% (nasopharynx), 99.41%±0.46% (lung), and 98.63%±1.01% (rectum). The dose volume histograms and indices also showed good consistency. The average dose reconstruction time, including back projection and CNN dose mapping, was less than 3 s for each individual beam.Significance.The proposed method can be potentially used for accurate and fast 3D dosimetric verification for online adaptive radiotherapy using MR-LINACs.

Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Monolith Catalysts for Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane

It’s of paramount importance to develop renewable nanocarbon materials to replace conventional precious metal catalysts in alkane dehydrogenation reactions. Graphene-based materials with high surface area have great potential for light alkane dehydrogenation. However, the powder-like state of the graphene-based materials seriously limits their potential industrial applications. In the present work, a new synthetic route is designed to fabricate nitrogen-doped graphene-based monolith catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. The synthetic strategy combines the hydrothermal-aerogel and the post thermo-treatment procedures with urea and graphene as precursors. The structural characterization and kinetic analysis show that the monolithic catalyst well maintains the structural advantages of graphene with relatively high surface area and excellent thermal stability. The homogeneous distributed nitrogen species can effectively improve the yield of propylene (5.3% vs. 1.9%) and lower the activation energy (62.6 kJ mol⁻¹ vs. 80.1 kJ mol⁻¹) in oxidative dehydrogenation of propane reaction comparing with un-doped graphene monolith. An optimized doping amount at 1:1 weight content of the graphene to urea precursors could exhibit the best catalytic performance. The present work paves the way for developing novel and efficient nitrogen-doped graphene monolithic catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation reactions of propane.

Synthesis of amorphous FeNiCo trimetallic hybrid electrode from ZIF precursors for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Development of non-noble multi-metallic electrocatalyst with high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity via a simple and low-cost method is of great importance for improving the efficiency of water electro-chemical splitting. Herein, a solution impregnation strategy was proposed to synthesize novel FeNi-doped Co-ZIF-L trimetallic hybrid electrocatalyst using Co-ZIF-L as sacrificial templates and Fe and Ni ions as etchants and dopants. This synthetic strategy could be realized via the etching-coprecipitation mechanism to obtain an amorphous hybrid containing multi-metal hydroxides. The as-prepared electrocatalyst loaded on Ni foam displays a low overpotential of 245 mV at 10 mA·cm^-2, a small Tafel slope of 54.9 mV·dec^-1, and excellent stability at least 12 h in the OER process. The facile and efficient synthetic strategy presents a new entry for the fabrication of ZIFs-derived multi-metallic electrocatalysts for OER electrocatalysis.

[Review of San Xiao Lun]

San Xiao Lun is a posthumous manuscript by Liu Wansu. It discussed the etiology, pathogenesis and therapeutic principles of diabetes with special prescriptions for it. Most references in this book came from the works of Liu Wansu himself and some of them came from the works of other sources, such as The Internal Cannon of Medicine. It can be seen that it was a book with Liu Wansu's rethinking and summerising about diabetes after he completed his other works. San Xiao Lun was first published in Ru Men Shi Qin in the Jin Dynasty. It was also cited by Yi Fang Lei Ju in Korea in 1445. It was fully recorded and published in Ru Men Shi Qin in the Wanli Period in the Ming Dynasty and therefore, became the basic version of the current one. After that, it envolved into Si Ku Quan Shu. In the end of the Qing Dynasty, this book was published independently with the comments by Zhou Xuehai, being one of the books in the Zhous' Series Medical Books(Zhou Shi Yi Xue Cong Shu).

Association Between Efficacy of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors and Sex: An Updated Meta-Analysis on 21 Trials and 12,675 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients

Background

Mounting randomized clinical trials have proved that immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) achieved better overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) than chemotherapy drugs for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, some literatures have indicated that different sexes might not have equal immune response. Also, no agreement reached on the issue whether therapeutic benefit of ICIs is related to sex.

Objectives

To explore the association between efficacy of ICIs for NSCLC patients and their sexes and summarize overall treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) in an exploratory manner.

Methods

We performed this systematic review and meta-analysis of all potentially relevant studies retrieved from PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library until June 2021, for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing immunotherapy with chemotherapy in advanced NSCLC patients. Literature screening, summary data extraction was performed independently and in duplicate. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of OS, PFS and TRAEs were calculated, applying STATA software and random-effects models. This study was registered in international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO), number CRD42020210797.

Results

Twenty-one trials involving 12,675 NSCLC patients were included. For patients with advanced NSCLC, ICIs significantly prolonged the OS (males: HR 0.73, 95%CI 0.67-0.79; females: HR 0.73, 95%CI 0.61-0.85) and PFS (males: HR 0.62, 95%CI 0.55-0.70; females: HR 0.68, 95%CI 0.55-0.81) versus chemotherapy. Overall, there was no statistical difference between their sexes (OS: P = 0.97; PFS: P = 0.43), respectively. Owing to insufficient TRAEs data of different sexes, we only found immunotherapy for NSCLC patients had more all-grades (RR 0.88; 95%CI 0.82-0.95) and 3-5 grades (RR 0.60; 95%CI 0.47-0.75) AEs compared with chemotherapy.

Conclusion

Our findings indicated that the interaction between immunotherapy efficacy and different sexes was equally evident. Overall, patients with NSCLC could obtain more benefits from ICIs than chemotherapy regimen regardless of their sexes.

Testing the Interspecific Function of Female Common Cuckoo “Bubbling” Call

Female common cuckoo (Cuculus canorous) predator-like “bubbling” calls distract host parental attention and reduce the egg rejection rate. Such “bubbling” calls are also frequently used to attract males and deter territorial rivals in intraspecies contact, and these calls are an ancestral character in many cuckoo species. Although hosts have had sufficient time to become familiar with this call and evolve anti-parasitic strategies, why are the hosts fooled by this “bubbling” call? We propose two hypotheses. The first hypothesis proposes that call variation reduces the opportunity for host species to correctly assess cuckoo tricks. In contrast, the second hypothesis proposes that the cost of behavior may prevent the antiparasitic strategy from evolving. In the study, we tested the prerequisites of these hypotheses, by investigating whether cuckoo calls vary during the day and testing whether the predator-like calls suppress bird activities. Based on field recordings from three different areas, we found high overlap in the calls generated during different periods. Oriental great reed warblers (Acrocephalus orientalis), a host species, did not show different responses toward the playback of female common cuckoo calls generated before noon or afternoon. Based on bird count data, we found that predator-like call playback is insufficient for suppressing bird activities. Therefore, none of the prerequisites were supported by our field data. We discuss the potential reasons for our findings and hope to inspire more research examining female cuckoo vocalizations.
