[Distribution and gene characteristics of H3, H4 and H6 subtypes of low pathogenic avian influenza viruses in environment related avian influenza viruses during 2014-2021 in China]

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of low pathogenic H3, H4 and H6 subtypes of avian influenza viruses in environment related avian influenza viruses in China from 2014 to 2021. Methods: Surveillance sites were located in 31 provinces, autonomous region and municipalities to collect environmental samples related to avian influenza, detect the nucleic acid detection of influenza A virus, isolate virus, deeply sequence, analyze pathogenicity related molecular sites, and determine the distribution and variation characteristics of common H3, H4 and H6 subtypes of avian influenza virus in different regions, places and sample types. Results: A total of 388 645 samples were collected. The positive rate of low pathogenic H3 (0.56‰) and H6 (0.53‰) was higher than that of H4 (0.09‰). The positive rate of H4 subtype virus in live poultry market was higher than that in other places, and the difference was statistically significant. The positive rate of H3 and H6 subtypes in sewage samples was higher than that in other samples, and the difference was statistically significant. The positive rate of H3, H4 and H6 viruses in the south was higher than that in the north, and the difference was statistically significant. December was the most active time for virus. The analysis of pathogenicity related molecular sites showed that H3, H4 and H6 subtypes of viruses combined with avian influenza virus receptors, and some gene sites related to increased pathogenicity had mutations. Conclusion: The H3, H4 and H6 subtypes of low pathogenic avian influenza viruses have a high isolation positive rate in the live poultry market and sewage. The distribution of the three subtypes of viruses has obvious regional and seasonal characteristics, and the genetic characteristics still show the feature of low pathogenic avian influenza.

Preliminary experience of oblique occlusion technique in robot-assisted infrahepatic inferior vena cava thrombectomy: step-by-step procedures and short term outcomes

Background

We aimed to compare the oncological outcomes between the oblique occlusion technique and the traditional technique for robot-assisted radical nephrectomy (RARN) with inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombectomy, and to explore the safety and effectiveness of the oblique occlusion technique.

Methods

Overall, 21 patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and IVC tumor thrombus (TT) were admitted to our hospital from August 2019 to June 2020. All the patients underwent RARN with IVC thrombectomy, of which the IVC oblique occlusion technique was used in 11 patients and traditional occlusion technique was used in 10 patients. The oblique occlusion technique refers to oblique blocking from the upper corner of the right renal vein to the lower corner of the left renal vein using a vessel tourniquet or a vessel clamp (left RCC with IVCTT as an example).

Results

Compared with patients in the traditional group, those in the oblique group had lower serum creatinine at follow-up (3 month) (95 ± 21.1 vs. 131 ± 30.7 μmol/L, P = 0.03). There was no significant difference in operation time [149 (IQR 143–245) min vs. 148 (IQR 108–261) min, p = 0.86], IVC clamping time [18 (IQR 12–20) min vs. 20 (IQR 14–23) min, p = 0.41], and estimated intraoperative blood loss [300 (IQR 100–800) mL vs. 500 (IQR 175–738) mL, p = 0.51] between both groups. During a 16-month (range, 15–23 months) follow-up period, two cases progressed in the oblique group and three cases progressed in the traditional group.

Conclusions

The modified IVC oblique occlusion technique procedure is relatively safe and effective in RARN with IVC thrombectomy. The IVC oblique occlusion technique may play a role in the protection of renal function.

Wearable respiratory sensors for COVID-19 monitoring

Since its outbreak in 2019, COVID-19 becomes a pandemic, severely burdening the public healthcare systems and causing an economic burden. Thus, societies around the world are prioritizing a return to normal. However, fighting the recession could rekindle the pandemic owing to the lightning-fast transmission rate of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, many of those who are infected remain asymptomatic for several days, leading to the increased possibility of unintended transmission of the virus. Thus, developing rigorous and universal testing technologies to continuously detect COVID-19 for entire populations remains a critical challenge that needs to be overcome. Wearable respiratory sensors can monitor biomechanical signals such as the abnormities in respiratory rate and cough frequency caused by COVID-19, as well as biochemical signals such as viral biomarkers from exhaled breaths. The point-of-care system enabled by advanced respiratory sensors is expected to promote better control of the pandemic by providing an accessible, continuous, widespread, noninvasive, and reliable solution for COVID-19 diagnosis, monitoring, and management.

Harvesting Hydropower via a Magnetoelastic Generator for Sustainable Water Splitting

Energy consumption and the resulting climate change are the two major challenges to human sustainability. Hydrogen (H₂) is a form of environmentally friendly renewable energy with an extremely high energy density of 143 MJ kg^-1. Water splitting is a practical and cost-effective approach to generate H₂ through the decomposition of H₂O by electrolysis with an external power supply. Herein, we introduce a compelling platform technology for self-powered water splitting by using a soft magnetoelastic generator to convert hydropower into electricity as a sustainable power supply for electrolysis. At a rotating speed of 469 rpm, the hydropower harvester is able to convert flowing kinetic energy into electricity and produce a high current density of 2.99 mA cm^-2 at a low resistance of 60 Ω. The magnetoelastic generator is intrinsically waterproof since the magnetic field can penetrate the water molecules. As a demonstration, the device maintained a stable electrical output even in underwater situations after over 7,000 cyclic operations. The generated electricity from hydropower could produce H₂ at a rate of 1.93 × 10^-3 mL min^-1. In conclusion, this work provides a compelling method for self-powered water splitting by using flowing kinetic energy.

New nickel-rich ternary carbonate hydroxide two-dimensional porous sheets for high-performance aqueous asymmetric supercapattery

Transition metal carbonate hydroxides (M-CHs) are promising candidates for electrode materials in supercapattery, due to their low-cost preparation and high-energy features. However, they also suffer from ionic kinetics bottlenecks without efficient morphological design. Tailoring the chemical compositions and nanostructures of electrode materials to realize high performance is significant for meeting the current demand for electrical energy storage devices. Therefore, we present a simple hydrothermal method for constructing better electrochemically active M-CHs with ternary metal components and hierarchical nanostructures that are assembled by interwoven nanosheets. Benefiting from higher contents of Ni species and superior two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) pore structures, the fabricated cobalt-nickel-zinc carbonate hydroxides with Co/Ni/Zn molar ratios of 2:3:1 (CoNiZn-231) delivered the best specific capacity of 1130.8 C g^-1 at 1 A g^-1, decent rate performance (67.2% in 1-10 A g^-1), and excellent cycling performance (92.6% over 10,000 cycles) in comparison with the majority of mono/bimetallic materials. Then, an alkaline hybrid (CoNiZn-231//activated carbon (AC)) device is developed, which shows a high energy density of 31.62 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 646 W kg^-1 and an excellent capacity retention of 99.27% after 10,000 cycles. Herein, the rational design of trimetallic compositions and hierarchical structures of carbonate hydroxides is described, which provides good choices for the synthesis of high-performance electrode materials in electrochemical energy storage applications.

Association between dietary intake of one-carbon metabolism nutrients and hyperglycemia in coal-burning fluorosis areas of Guizhou, China

Background and aims

There are limited studies describing the association between dietary intake of one-carbon metabolism nutrients and hyperglycemia. The present study aimed to investigate the association of habitual dietary intake of one-carbon metabolism nutrients with hyperglycemia in a fluorosis area in China, and explored the interaction between these nutrients and fluorosis related to hyperglycemia.

Method

In a cross-sectional study, we recruited 901 villagers, ages ranging from 18–75, in Guizhou Province. Dietary data and other covariate data were obtained through an interviewer-administered questionnaire. We collected venous blood samples from participants who had fasted for one night to obtain fasting blood glucose levels and we categorized dietary intake of betaine, total choline, methionine, folate, vitamins B₆ and B₁₂, and choline subclasses into quartiles (Q1–Q4). The lowest quartile (Q1) served as the reference group. An unconditional logistic regression model was used to evaluate the protective effects of a dietary intake of one-carbon nutrients against hyperglycemia. We calculated Odds Ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A presence or absence of fluorosis subgroup analysis was performed to determine the potential effect of fluorosis on hyperglycemia.

Result

After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found that a greater intake of dietary vitamin B₆, total choline and methyl-donor index was inversely associated with the occurrence of hyperglycemia (P-trend <0.05). However, there were no significant associations between hyperglycemia and the dietary intake of folate, vitamin B₁₂, methionine, and betaine. As for the choline subgroups, it showed that the dietary intake of free choline, phosphatidylcholine, and glycerol phosphatidylcholine was negatively correlated with the occurrence of hyperglycemia (P < 0.05). In contrast, there was no statistical association between dietary phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin and hyperglycemia (all P > 0.05). The results of subgroup analysis showed that dietary intake of folate, vitamin B₆, total choline, free choline, glycerol phosphorylcholine, and phosphocholine had a protective effect against the occurrence of hyperglycemia in the non-fluorosis subgroup, although no effects were observed in the fluorosis subgroup. There were significant interactions between these nutrients and fluorosis (P = 0.010–0.048).

Conclusion

The study demonstrated that higher dietary intake of vitamin B₆, total choline, methyl-donor index, free choline, glycerol phosphorylcholine, and phosphocholine in choline compounds were associated with a lower incidence of hyperglycemia. Moreover, the associations were modified by the presence or absence of fluorosis. Further investigation is needed to test the association in large-scale follow-up studies.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and long-term bleeding in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention: 5-year outcomes from a large cohort study

Aims

Recent research reported that lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is associated with more in-hospital bleeding in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. However, the association between lower LDL-C levels and long-term bleeding in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patients remains unclear.

Methods

A total of 10724 patients treated with PCI enrolled in ourhospital from January 2013 to December 2013. The primary endpoint was the Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) type 2, 3 or 5 bleeding at 5 years. The secondary endpoint was intracranial hemorrhage. Taking the LDL-C value of 1.8 mmol/L (70 mg/dL) or 1.4 mmol/L (55 mg/dL) as cut-off points, patients were grouped to analyse, respectively.

Results

Among 9697 PCI patients treated with dual antiplatelet therapy finally enrolled, a total of 411 BARC type 2, 3 or 5 bleedings and 42 intracranial hemorrhage were recorded during a follow-up of 5 years. With LDL-C value of 1.8 mmol/L as cut-off point, multivariate Cox regression showed that lower LDL-C level was not associated with the risk for bleeding [hazard ratio (HR): 1.166, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.879–1.549]. The result was consistent (HR: 1.185; 95% CI: 0.713–1.968) in a 1:4 propensity-score matching cohort (n=1285). For further study, we performed subgroup analysis which showed that lower LDL-C was not associated with the risk for bleeding in ACS (HR: 1.140; 95% CI: 0.846–1.535) or non-ACS patients (HR: 1.284; 95% CI: 0.909–1.813). With LDL-C value of 1.4 mmol/L as cut-off point, Cox regression showed that lower LDL-C level was not associated with the risk for bleeding in total population, ACS or non-ACS patients (P&gt;0.05). The result was consistent in a 1:4 propensity-score matching cohort (n=760) (P&gt;0.05). As for secondary endpoint, lower LDL-C level was not associated with the risk for intracranial hemorrhage whether the LDL-C value is 1.8 or 1.4 mmol/L as the cut-off point (P&gt;0.05).

Conclusions

To the best of our knowledge, we firstly report lower LDL-C level (whether the LDL-C value is 1.8 or 1.4 mmol/L as the cut-off point) was not the independent risk factor of long-term bleeding in PCI population and ACS or non-ACS subgroup populations.

Long Noncoding RNA FBXL19-AS1-Mediated Ulcerative Colitis-Associated Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Defect

BACKGROUND

This study commenced to uncover the role of long non-coding RNA FBXL19 antisense RNA 1 (FBXL19-AS1) in the development of ulcerative colitis (UC) and its possible mechanism.

METHODS

FBXL19-AS1 expression in the colonic sigmoid mucosa of UC patients was detected. A colitis model was induced in mice using 5% dextran sodium sulfate. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was performed for histopathological examination. Apoptosis was detected by Tunel staining and tissue fibrosis was detected by immunohistochemistry. Also, intestinal permeability was examined. The concentrations of inflammatory factors IL-1β and IL-18 were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relationship between FBXL19-AS1, miR-339-3p and RHOB was verified by RNA immunoprecipitation assay and dual luciferase reporter assay.

RESULTS

The expression of FBXL19-AS1 was increased in dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model. FBXL19-AS1 interference or miR-339-3p overexpression inhibited DSS-induced colonic epithelial cell apoptosis and inflammatory response, and improved intestinal epithelial barrier defects, thereby ameliorating DSS-induced colitis injury in mice. FBXL19-AS1 sponged miR-339-3p while miR-339-3p targeted RHOB. Overexpression of RHOB reversed the protective effect of inhibition of FBXL19-AS1 on DSS-induced colitis in mice.

CONCLUSION

FBXL19-AS1 reduces miR-339-3p-mediated targeting of RHOB and aggravates intestinal epithelial barrier defect in DSS-induced colitis in mice.

The endorectal incision level of transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME): An emphasis on the distance from the anterior vs. posterior mesorectal ends to the anal verge

BACKGROUND

There is no intraluminal guidance to ensure complete inclusion of the mesorectum in transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME). This study aimed to assess the distance difference between the anterior and posterior mesorectal terminal ends and the anal verge as a potential risk for residual mesorectum after resection.

METHODS

Forty-four surgical specimens of extra-levator abdominoperineal excision (ELAPE) and 28 mid-sagittal cadaveric specimens were included to this study. The distance between the mesorectum terminal end (T) and the endoluminal landmarks (dentate line (D)/anal verge (A)) was measured and compared between men and women. Furthermore, 66 MRI images from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) were used to validate the same concept in a non-Asian population.

RESULTS

The mesorectal terminal end was found to be aligned along with the levator hiatus. From the midsagittal view, the ELAPE specimens showed that the distance between T and A anteriorly was significantly longer than the same distance posteriorly (34.74±7.79mm vs 23.74±4.24mm, P<0.001). Similarly, the distance measured in the cadaveric specimens was significantly longer anteriorly than posteriorly (P<0.001). The validation cohort of non-Asian MRI image has confirmed the same (56.68±14.17mm vs. 38.18 ±10.42mm, P<0.001(. There was no significant difference between men and women.

CONCLUSIONS

Because of the remarkable distance difference between the anterior and posterior mesorectal terminal ends away from the anal verge, the taTME proctectomy level may not meet the required mesorectal end. Thus, if TME is planned, aligning the proctectomy level around the levator hiatus would be the best place that can ensure complete TME.

Smart Textiles for Healthcare and Sustainability

At the forefront of the smart textile community, healthcare and sustainability are the two crucial objectives targeted by researchers. The development of such powerful devices has been driven by innovative fabrications of breathable, skin-conformable technologies through the use of functional and programmable materials and device structures. This Perspective focuses on the current smart textiles available in the research field, categorized into personalized healthcare, including diagnostics and therapeutics, and sustainability, including energy harvesting and conservation─personalized thermoregulation. These categories are further broken down into their platform structural technologies and performances. Furthermore, we give a comprehensive overview and highlight a few examples of current studies. Finally, we provide an outlook on these technologies for future researchers to participate. We envision that the next generation of smart textiles will revolutionize wearable technology for healthcare and sustainability.

Determination of related substances in egg yolk lecithin by HPLC-CAD and characterization of its profiling by HPLC-Q-TOF-MS

A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method has been developed for the determination of related substances in egg yolk lecithin. Chromatographic separation was achieved using a gradient elution on a Waters Xbridge HILIC column maintained at 35 ℃. Mobile phase A was composed of water-acetonitrile (80:20, v/v, containing 5 mM ammonium acetate), and mobile phase B was composed of acetonitrile. Analytes were monitored by a charged aerosol detector (CAD) at 50 ℃. The novel HPLC-CAD method was selective and sensitive for the determination of related substances in egg yolk lecithin in its commercial bulk batches. It was also successfully validated by the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines. The method will be a renewal of an old Chinese Pharmacopoeia method (2020 edition). Moreover, quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOF-MS) was integrated with HPLC to investigate phospholipid species in egg yolk lecithin. This work provides comprehensive composition profiles of egg yolk lecithin, thereby accelerating the quality control, development, and application of egg yolk lecithin.
