Abstract
Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a non-malignant condition caused by post-zygotic, activating mutations of the GNAS gene that results in inhibition of the differentiation and proliferation of bone-forming stromal cells and leads to the replacement of normal bone and marrow by fibrous tissue and woven bone. The phenotype is variable and may be isolated to a single skeletal site or multiple sites and sometimes is associated with extraskeletal manifestations in the skin and/or endocrine organs (McCune-Albright syndrome). The clinical behavior and progression of FD may also vary, thereby making the management of this condition difficult with few established clinical guidelines. This paper provides a clinically-focused comprehensive description of craniofacial FD, its natural progression, the components of the diagnostic evaluation and the multi-disciplinary management, and considerations for future research.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of eight metals on the anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) in bioreactors. Anaerobic bioreactors containing 200 mL MSW mixed completely with 200 m L sludge seeding. Ca and K (0, 1000, 2000 and 6,000 mg L(-1)) and Cr, Ni, Zn, Co, Mo and W (0, 5, 50 and 100 mg L(-1)) of various dose were added to anaerobic bioreactors to examine their anaerobic digestion performance. Results showed that except K and Zn, Ca (~728 to ~1,461 mg L(-1)), Cr (~0.0022 to ~0.0212 mg L(-1)), Ni (~0.801 to ~5.362 mg L(-1)), Co (~0.148 to ~0.580 mg L(-1)), Mo (~0.044 to ~52.94 mg L(-1)) and W (~0.658 to ~40.39 mg L(-1)) had the potential to enhance the biogas production. On the other hand, except Mo and W, inhibitory concentrations IC(50) of Ca, K, Cr, Ni, Zn and Co were found to be ~3252, ~2097, ~0.124, ~7.239, ~0.482, ~8.625 mg L(-1), respectively. Eight spiked metals showed that they were adsorbed by MSW to a different extent resulting in different liquid metals levels and potential stimulation and inhibition on MSW anaerobic digestion. These results were discussed and compared to results from literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A facial contour that is oval is more pleasing in Asian women. Patients with a square face often seek facial contouring procedures to improve their appearance. Treatment often involves various combinations of Botulinum NeuroToxin A (BoNTA) injections into the masseters and/or mandibular angle resection. Many physicians claim that muscle paralysis with injections alone will decrease pulling on the underlying bone and also treat underlying bony flaring when present. Muscular changes after BoNTA injections have been well documented. However, the effect of BoNTA injections on the underlying mandibular bone morphology has not been studied to the best of the authors' knowledge. The goal of this study was to determine whether there are mandibular changes after masseter injection with botulinum toxin. METHODS In this retrospective study of ten female patients seeking treatment for a square face, three-dimensional CT scans were taken before and 3 months after standardized BoNTA injections in bilateral masseters. Mandibular cortex thickness, mandibular bone thickness, and mandibular volume were measured. RESULTS Soft-tissue changes were observed but no bony changes were observed 3 months after injections. CONCLUSIONS In this study of adult patients, there were no statistically significant mandibular changes 3 months after BoNTA injection. The current theory of mandibular flaring resolution after partial muscle paralysis is not supported by our findings. Therefore, a patient presenting both masseteric hypertrophy and bony flaring will most likely require a combined muscular and bony procedure.

Abstract
Quantification of HBeAg levels has been found to be useful in monitoring and predicting the outcomes of interferon and lamivudine treatment in HBeAg-positive patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether quantification of HBeAg at baseline and on treatment could predict which patients would achieve HBeAg seroconversion after 96 weeks of entecavir therapy. Sixty-five HBeAg-positive naïve chronic hepatitis B patients who were treated with entecavir at a dose of 0.5 mg once daily for 96 weeks were evaluated. Serum HBV DNA levels were assessed at baseline, week 24, 48 and 96; serum HBeAg levels were assessed at baseline, week 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96. Serum HBeAg levels were associated with a higher likelihood of HBeAg seroconversion to entecavir at weeks 96 than serum HBV DNA levels both at baseline and on treatment (at baseline: OR = 9.932, P = 0.003 vs. OR = 5.045, P = 0.036; on treatment: OR = 112.5, P < 0.0001 vs. OR = 47.782, P < 0.0001). A maintained reduction in HBeAg > 65% of pretreatment HBeAg values after 24 weeks of entecavir therapy is the strongest predictor for HBeAg seroconversion at week 96 (OR = 70.578, P < 0.0001). Quantification of HBeAg at the start and early during therapy showed a higher predictive value than that of HBV DNA for HBeAg seroconversion by entecavir. A significant decrease in serum HBeAg levels at week 24 may be a useful on-treatment measurement in the early phase for predicting HBeAg seroconversion and identifying patients who will most likely benefit from finite entecavir treatment.

Abstract
We are the first group to use a simple direct ultraviolet light (UV, λ=365 nm, I=76 mW cm(-2)) in a decomposition process to fabricate ZnO nanowires on a flexible substrate using a zinc acetylacetonate hydrate precursor in ambient air. ZnO nanocrystal (or nanowire) production only requires three to ten minutes. A field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) image reveals a high aspect ratio of the ZnO nanowires, which are grown on a substrate with a diameter of ∼50-100 nm, and a length of up to several hundred microns. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images reveal that the nanowires consist of many single crystalline ZnO nanoparticles that grow along the c axis, which suggests an oriented attachment process. A potential application for flexible UV photodetectors was investigated using a UV lamp (λ=365 nm, I=2.34 mW cm(-2)). A significant ratio of photocurrent to dark current--around 11,300%--was achieved.

Abstract
Aggregated β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) are neurotoxic and responsible for neuronal death both in vitro and in vivo. From the structural point of view, Aβ self-aggregation involves a conformational change in the peptide. Here, we investigated the relationship between conformational changes and amino acid residues of Aβ(40). Urea unfolding in combination with NMR spectroscopy was applied to probe the stabilization of Aβ(40) conformation. L17 and F19 residues were found more sensitive to environmental changes than the other residues. Replacement of these two residues with alanine could stabilize the conformation of Aβ(40). Further analysis indicated that the Aβ(40)(L17A/F19A) mutant could diminish the aggregation and reduce the neurotoxicity. These results suggest that L17 and F19 are the critical residues responsible for conformational changes which may trigger neurotoxic cascade of Aβ(40).

Abstract
The prognosis of recurrent endometrial carcinoma is generally poor except for isolated vaginal or pelvic relapse without previous radiation. Recurrences associated with infield failure or distant metastasis carry a poor prognosis. We report a case of recurrent endometrial carcinoma treated with cytoreductive surgery, targeted radiation to lung metastasis defined by CT and PET and adjuvant chemo-hormone therapy followed by maintenance progestin therapy with a good outcome. This case implied that chemo-hormone therapy with targeted radiation should be evaluated in recurrent endometrial cancer with positive progesterone receptor for salvage treatment.

Abstract
The neurotoxicity of Aβ is associated with the formation of free radical by interacting with redox active metals such as Cu2+. However, the relationship between ion-interaction, ion-driven free radical formation, and Aβ conformation remains to be further elucidated. In the present study, we investigated the correlation of Cu2+ interaction and Cu2+-driven free radical formation with Aβ40 conformation. The Cu2+-binding affinity for Aβ40 in random coiled form is 3-fold higher than that in stable helical form. Unexpectedly but interestingly, we demonstrate in the first time that the stable helical form of Aβ40 can induce the formation of H2O2 by interacting with Cu2+. On the other hand, the H2O2 generation is repressed at Aβ/Cu2+ molar ratio ≥1 when Aβ40 adopts random coiled structure. Taken together, our result demonstrates that Aβ40 adopted a helical structure that may play a key factor for the formation of free radical with Cu2+ ions.

Abstract
Deterioration in the function of the sensorimotor system is often seen in patients with diabetes and could be related to balance impairments. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between sensorimotor function and forward reach ability in patients with diabetes. Thirty-one patients with Type 2 diabetes went through a monofilament test of plantar touch-pressure threshold, an ankle joint reposition test for joint position sense, and a series of strength tests of the lower leg. These patients also performed the forward reach test in standing to measure the reach distance and displacement of the center of mass (COM), using a motion analysis system. Correlational and regressional analyses were conducted to determine the association between sensorimotor and balance parameters. It was found that greater reach distance and COM displacement were significantly correlated with lower plantar touch-pressure threshold and greater plantarflexion strength. Regression analysis showed that after controlling the variance in the subject characteristics, plantar touch-pressure threshold was a significant predictor for reach distance and COM displacement, while plantarflexion strength was also a significant predictor for COM displacement. These findings highlight the importance of the assessment of plantar sensitivity and the need for detailed balance or fall risk assessment for patients with impaired plantar insensitivity.

Abstract
The effect of temperature and retention time on the rate of methane production from waste of beef cattle fed a finishing diet was investigated by using continuously mixed 3-liter working volume anaerobic fermentors. The temperatures ranged from 30 to 65 degrees C with 5 degrees C increments between fermentors. The fermentors were fed once per day with 6% volatile solids (organic matter). Retention time for each temperature was varied from 18 to 2.5 days. After 3-volume turnovers, samples were obtained on 4 consecutive days. The highest methane production rate (liters/liter of fermentor per day) and methane yield at that rate (liters/gram of volatile solids) were 1.27 and 0.19 at 9 days and 30 degrees C, 1.60 and 0.16 at 6 days and 35 degrees C, 2.28 and 0.23 at 6 days and 40 degrees C, 2.42 and 0.24 at 6 days and 45 degrees C, 2.83 and 0.14 at 3 days and 50 degrees C, 2.75 and 0.14 at 3 days and 55 degrees C, 3.18 and 0.14 at 2.5 days and 60 degrees C, and 1.69 and 0.17 at 6 days and 65 degrees C. Volatile solids degradation at these retention times and temperatures was between 46 and 54%. The concentrations of volatile acids in the 30 to 55 degrees C fermentors were generally below 2,000 mg/liter, with the exception of the 3-day retention time. The 60 and 65 degrees C fermentors were usually above this level for all retention times. These studies indicate potential rates of methane production from the fermentation of untreated waste of beef cattle fed high-grain finishing diets. This information should serve as preliminary guidelines for various kinetic analyses and aid in economic evaluations of the potential feasibility of fermenting beef cattle waste to methane.

Abstract
Lignins play a crucial role in the cell-wall architecture of all vascular plants. They are composed of p-hydroxyphenylpropanoid units interconnected through covalent bonds formed during lignol radical coupling between six different pairs of atomic centers. For 50years, the primary structures of lignins have been thought to be random, but for a number of reasons such an assumption is not tenable. For example, it has been reported that, by simple physicochemical means, the rather recalcitrant lignins in spruce wood can be decisively separated into two fractions containing quite dissimilar biopolymer chains. Thus, a paradigm shift should be imminent, and a detailed working hypothesis for the mechanism of lignin biosynthesis would be invaluable in delineating how the process of macromolecular lignin assembly can be properly investigated. In conjunction with an earlier experimental result, an explicit model for a template dehydropolymerization process has been developed that describes how lignin primary structure is replicated. The strengths of the powerful noncovalent interactions have been calculated that control the transient placement of lignol radicals about to undergo coupling on a double-stranded lignin template. These elementary steps engender, in the growing daughter chain, a primary structure identical to that of the distal template strand. The interactions are governed by dynamical electron correlation in the pi-orbitals of each immobilized lignol radical and the complementary aromatic ring in the antiparallel proximal strand. The resulting noncovalent forces are computed to be stronger than those stabilizing GC/CG base pairs in DNA double-helices, but the mechanism of replication is fundamentally different from that of any other biopolymer.

Abstract
Layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) thin films has recently been applied to biomaterial applications. This simple and versatile technique provides a wide variety of potential utilization by insertion of biomolecules such as cell adhesion peptides. In this work dual peptides containing RGD (a cell-binding domain) and LHRRVKI (a heparin-binding domain) were immobilized onto polystyrene by the PEM technique and the effects on osteoblast cell culture were investigated. These peptides were conjugated to the amino groups of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and then adsorbed onto the top of a 10 layer poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/poly(acrylic acid) film assembled at either pH 2.0 or pH 6.5. Osteoblasts, isolated from neonatal rat calvariae, were then seeded and cultured on the peptide-conjugated surfaces. We found that the cells adhered and grew better on the RGD-conjugated PEM films. The osteoblasts exhibited a better differentiated phenotype on the pH 2.0 films than the pH 6.5 films with respect to calcium deposition. The incorporation of LHRRVKI did not support cell adhesion, growth and matrix mineral deposition. Our results showed that the efficacy of RGD conjugation on osteoblast behavior was affected by the base PEM film.

Abstract
Keratins 8 and 18 (collectively referred to as K8/K18) are the major components of intermediate filaments of simple epithelial cells. Recent studies have revealed the function of K8/K18 in apoptosis modulation. Here, we show that eIF3k, originally identified as the smallest subunit of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3) complexes, also localizes to keratin intermediate filaments and physically associates with K18 in epithelial cells. Upon induction of apoptosis, eIF3k colocalizes with K8/K18 in the insoluble cytoplasmic inclusions. Depletion of endogenous eIF3k de-sensitizes simple epithelial cells to various types of apoptosis through a K8/K18-dependent mechanism and promotes the retention of active caspase 3 in cytoplasmic inclusions by increasing its binding to keratins. Consequently, the cleavage of caspase cytosolic and nuclear substrates, such as ICAD and PARP, respectively, is reduced in eIF3k-depleted cells. This study not only reveals the existence of eIF3k in a subcellular compartment other than the eIF3 complex, but also identifies an apoptosis-promoting function of eIF3k in simple epithelial cells by relieving the caspase-sequestration effect of K8/K18, thereby increasing the availability of caspases to their non-keratin-residing substrates.

In this work, we examined the participation of protein kinase C (PKC) in the regulation of hTERT expression in human T lymphocytes. Transient expression assays using luciferase reporter plasmids containing hTERT promoter showed that overexpression of PKC theta, but not the other PKC isoforms, could activate the promoter activity of hTERT in resting T lymphocytes. Among the PKC theta-activated signalings, we presented evidence that the expression of hTERT is mediated through NFkappaB but not through MEK or c-Jun N-terminal kinase pathways. Analysis of the hTERT promoter occupancy in vivo using chromatin immunoprecipitation assays, however, did not detect an increased binding of NFkappaB to the hTERT promoter in the activated T cells, although an increased binding of cMyc and Sp1 was detected. Together with the observation that inhibition of NFkappaB eliminated the induction of cMyc in activated T cells, these results suggest that PKC theta-activated NFkappaB signaling regulates the expression of hTERT via cMyc in human T lymphocytes.

Abstract
New bioinorganic complexes of the aspartic acid with the antimony or bismuth triiodide were synthesized by a direct solid-solid reaction at room temperature. The formula of the complex is MI(3)[OOCCH(2)CH(NH(2))CO](2.5) x 2.5H(2)O (M = Sb, Bi). The complex may be a dimer with bridge structure. The crystal structure of the complexes belongs to a triclinic system. The lattice parameters are a = 0.9883 nm, b = 1.4284 nm, c = 2.0114 nm, alpha = 94.46 degrees , beta = 99.76 degrees and gamma = 100.1 degrees for the complex of antimony and a = 0.9756 nm, b = 1.4560 nm, c = 1.9875 nm, alpha = 94.18 degrees , beta = 97.25 degrees and gamma = 101.16 degrees for the complex of bismuth. The infrared spectra and thermal analyses can demonstrate the complex formation between the aspartic acid and the antimony or bismuth ion.

Abstract
The conformational change and associated aggregation of beta amyloid (Abeta) with or without metals is the main cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In order to further understand the effects of Abeta and its associated metals on the aggregation mechanism, the influence of Abeta conformation on the metal affinity and aggregation was investigated using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The Abeta conformation is dependent on pH and trifluoroethanol (TFE). The binding of metals to Abeta was found to be dependent on the Abeta conformation. The aggregation induced by Abeta itself or its associated metals is completely diminished for Abeta in 40% TFE. Only in 5% and 25% TFE can Abeta undergo an alpha-helix to beta-sheet aggregation, which involve a three-state mechanism for the metal-free state, and a two-state transition for the metal-bound state, respectively. The aggregation-inducing activity of metals is in the order, Cu2+ > Fe3+ > or = Al3+ > Zn2+.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) of the pancreas is rare and correct preoperative diagnosis is difficult. Case reports of ASC of the pancreas are sporadic and have typically employed small series. This study investigated the clinicopathological features of 7 cases of ASC of the pancreas and reviewed the pertinent literature to elucidate this rare disease. METHODOLOGY Seven patients (4 men and 3 women; age range 38-79 years; median 66 years) with ASC of the pancreas who underwent surgical treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between February 1993 and April 2000 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Symptoms of ASC were as follows: abdominal pain (85.7%), body weight loss (85.7%), jaundice (42.9%) and anorexia (42.9%). The tumors were located at the head of the pancreas in 4 patients (57.1%), at the body in 2, and at the tail in 2. One patient had ASC at the body and tail. Most cases (5/7, 71.4%) were anemic. Seven (100%) and 5 patients (71.4%) had elevated serum CEA and CA19-9 levels, respectively. Curative pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed on 2 patients, bypass surgery on 3, and exploratory laparotomy on 2. Two patients underwent intraoperative radiotherapy. Three patients received postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. No surgical mortality or morbidity occurred. Five of 7 patients (71.4%) died within 6 months after surgery. The median survival of the 7 patients was 4.41 months (range 1.12-22.42). CONCLUSIONS Patients with ASC present symptoms similar to those of adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. Most patients had dismal prognosis despite aggressive surgery with or without adjuvant therapy.

Abstract
A simple and selective micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) is described for determination of indomethacin in plasma. Plasma proteins are precipitated by acetonitrile. An aliquot of supernatant was evaporated and reconstituted with Tris buffer for MEKC analysis. The separation of indomethacin was performed at 25 degrees C using a background electrolyte consisting of Tris buffer (30 mM; pH 8.0) with 100 mM sodium octanesulfonate (SOS) as an anionic surfactant. Under this condition, a good separation with high efficiency and short analysis time is achieved. Several parameters affecting the separation of indomethacin were studied, including pH and concentrations of the Tris buffer and SOS. The linear range of the method for the determination of indomethacin was over 0.3-10.0 microg/mL; the detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio=3; injection 0.5 psi 5s) was 0.1 microg/mL. The proposed method for determination of indomethacin in premature infants with patent ducts arteriosus has been demonstrated.

Abstract

The determination of cefepime and L-arginine in pharmaceutical preparations was performed at 25degreesC using a background electrolyte consisting of Tris buffer with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the electrolyte solution. Several parameters affecting the separation of the drugs were studied, including the pH and concentrations of the Tris buffer and SDS. Under optimal MEKC conditions, good separation with high efficiency and short analysis times is achieved. Using cefazolin as an internal standard, the linear ranges of the method for the determination of cefepime and L-arginine were over 5-100 microg/mL; the detection limits of cefepime (signal to noise ratio = 3; injection 3.45 kPa, 3 s) and L-arginine (signal to noise ratio = 3; injection 3.45 kPa, 3 s) were 2 microg/mL and 4 microg/ mL, respectively. Applicability of the proposed method for the determination of cefepime and L-arginine in commercial injections was demonstrated.

Abstract
The new amino acid complex nanoparticles of bismuth and leucine can be prepared very easily by a room temperature solid-solid reaction. The various characterizations indicate that the formula of the complex is BiCl[(CH(3))(2)CHCH(2)CHNH(2)COO](2)1.5H(2)O. The crystal structure of the solid complex belongs to monoclinic system with the lattice parameters: a = 1.6036 nm, b = 1.9903 nm, c = 2.1979 nm and beta=108.06 degrees . The new solid complex is nanoparticles with average size about 80 nm.

Under optimal MEKC condition, good separation with high efficiency and short analyses time is achieved. Several parameters affecting the separation of the drug were studied, including the pH and concentrations of the Tris buffer and SDS. Using cefazolin as an internal standard, the linear ranges of the method for the determination of cefepime in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid were 1-50 and 1-20 microg/mL, respectively; the detection limits of plasma (signal-to-noise ratio = 3; injection, 5 kV, 5 s) and cerebrospinal fluid (signal-to-noise ratio = 3; injection, 0.5 psi, 3 s) were 0.2 microg/mL and 0.3 microg/mL, respectively. Application of the proposed method for determination of cefepime in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid collected after intravenous administration of 2 g cefepime in patients with meningitis was demonstrated.

Abstract
The applicability of Contois' kinetic equation to aerobic and anaerobic treatments of organic wastes is investigated. A refractory coefficient to account for the nonbiodegradable portion of the organic substrates in the digester is incorporated into the kinetic equation. The kinetic equation is applied to the data for aerobic digestions of organic substrates and for anaerobic treatment of dairy wastes. They all show a very good fit of the kinetic equation to the data. Furthermore, the kinetic parameters and the refractory coefficients are shown to be independent of influent organic substrate concentration. This study confirms previous reports that the effluent quality of biological treatment systems for organic wastes depends on influent organic waste concentration. The effect of temperature on the kinetic parameters and the refractory coefficient for anaerobic treatment of sewage sludge are studied. It shows that the kinetic parameters vary with temperature, while the refractory coefficient remains fairly constant. Equations to predict biodegradable treatment efficiency and volumetric substrate utilization rate are also briefly discussed.
