[One case of severely scalded patient with pneumonia and sepsis]

In February 2018, one 54-year-old male patient with severe scald complicated with pneumonia and sepsis was transferred to Qingdao Municipal Hospital from other hospital. Drugs including cephalosporin, vancomycin, and imipenem/cilastatin combined with ciprofloxacin were used successively for anti-infective treatment, with no obvious effect. Multiple bacterial culture results of sputum, blood, and wound exudate showed infection of extensively drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. On the 4th day of admission, the anti-infective treatment plan was adjusted, and plasma, red blood cell, and albumin were supplemented and nutritional support and symptomatic treatment were performed. At the same time, medication and drug-related adverse reaction were monitored. After treatment for more than 10 days, infection of the patient was effectively controlled and the condition gradually improved. The case suggests that severely burned patients are prone to have serious and fatal systemic infection, irregular use of antibiotics increases the risk of infection of extensively drug resistant bacteria, clear anti-infection idea and effective application of antibacterial drug can help to improve the success rate of infection treatment and are of important value in improving the prognosis of patients with severe burn.

Theoretical basis and clinical practice for FUE megasession hair transplantation in the treatment of large area androgenic alopecia

BACKGROUND

Large area androgenic alopecia patients seeking hair transplantation treatment has become common. FUE Megasession has become a choice for more and more people. Long-term in vitro preservation of hair follicles during FUE Megasession has become a new challenge.

OBJECTIVE

To explore optimal in vitro preservation condition according to FUE Megasession long-period surgery time and to perform clinical practice to confirm the feasibility.

METHODS

Human follicles were obtained from informed patients by FUE Megasession and preserved under different conditions. Live and dead staining with DAPI was used to assess the survival rate of cells. Hair follicles were preserved in vitro for 7 days under different conditions, and the extension of the hair shaft was observed. We also performed some clinical procedures to illustrate the effectiveness of these methods.

RESULTS

Under the condition of 4℃ Ringer's solution, the death rate of hair follicle cells was lower than that of the rest. 4℃ Ringer's solution supported superior growth of the hair follicle unit according to organ culture. 8-h preservation in 4℃ Ringer's solution was kept as high survival rate as the traditional hair transplantation surgery（P > .05）. Clinical procedures confirmed the feasibility of FUE Megasession hair transplantation surgery.

CONCLUSION

4℃ Ringer's solution in vitro preservation is optimal for clinical FUE Megasession surgery which ensures the hair follicle survival rate and postoperative results.

Process optimization and the relationship between the reaction degree and the antioxidant activity of Maillard reaction products of chicken liver protein hydrolysates

The aim of this study was to optimize the protein hydrolysates from chicken liver with xylose under Maillard reaction (MR) conditions using response surface methodology. The correlation between the browning degree, grafting degree, and the antioxidant activities of the Maillard reaction products (MRPs) was investigated. The optimal reaction conditions were achieved with a reaction temperature of 138.78°C, an initial pH of 7.99, and a reaction time of 93.14 min. The grafting degree (41.98%) and browning degree (2.582) of chicken liver protein hydrolysate MRPs (CLPHM) were notably higher (P < 0.05) than those of protein MRPs (CLPM) and were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those of sonicated hydrolysate MRPs (SCLPHM). The reducing power, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and hydroxyl radical scavenging of CLPM, CLPHM, and SCLPHM were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than those of the protein or hydrolysate substrates. The grafting degree and browning degree of CLPM, CLPHM, and SCLPHM had positive correlations with DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. Hence, this study could enhance the added value of chicken liver by exhibiting the enhancements from ultrasound pretreatment and the MR. MRPs could have an effective and potential application in the food industry.

Overcoming the Achilles' heel of orthostatic hypotension during interactive standing liposculpture

BACKGROUND

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a major obstacle to standing liposculpture.

AIMS

To investigate the feasibility of a novel "interactive standing liposculpture" procedure under local anesthesia to avoid possible general anesthesia-related complications and overcome standing-associated OH.

METHODS

A total of 68 subjects undergoing IsLipo were divided into three groups: Individuals with normal body weight (18 ≤ BMI < 23, n = 21, Group 1), overweight or mildly obese subjects (23 ≤ BMI < 30, n = 29, Group 2), and those with moderate-to-severe obesity (BMI ≥ 30, n = 18, Group 3). A 4-area liposculpture technique was adopted with alternate change in position from recumbent to standing for each area. Subjects with symptoms of OH (ie, dizziness or/and nausea) were allowed to rest in a supine position before resuming the procedure. Incidence of OH and duration of liposculpture for each area were recorded and analyzed.

RESULTS

The incidence of OH was 15 (four subjects experienced two episodes during the same procedure). All OH episodes occurred in Group 3 subjects. The total liposuction time significantly increased from Group 1 to Group 3 (all P < .001). The IsLipo time in Group 3 was also substantially longer than that in Group 1 and Group 2 (P < .001). Mean arterial blood pressure dropped and heart rate increased significantly in all subjects experiencing OH without fluctuation in arterial oxygen saturation. All subjects with OH recovered after a 10-minute rest and resumed the IsLipo procedure. Successful liposculpture were performed in all subjects.

CONCLUSION

Orthostatic hypotension associated with interactive standing liposculpture, which predominantly occurred in subjects with moderate-to-severe obesity, could be resolved with an intraoperative resting strategy.

International consensus guidelines for surgery and the timing of intervention in chronic pancreatitis

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a complex inflammatory disease with pain as the predominant symptom. Pain relief can be achieved using invasive interventions such as endoscopy and surgery. This paper is part of the international consensus guidelines on CP and presents the consensus guideline for surgery and timing of intervention in CP.

METHODS

An international working group with 15 experts on CP surgery from the major pancreas societies (IAP, APA, JPS, and EPC) evaluated 20 statements generated from evidence on 5 questions deemed to be the most clinically relevant in CP. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to evaluate the level of evidence available for each statement. To determine the level of agreement, the working group voted on the 20 statements for strength of agreement, using a nine-point Likert scale in order to calculate Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient.

RESULTS

Strong consensus was obtained for the following statements: Surgery in CP is indicated as treatment of intractable pain and local complications of adjacent organs, and in case of suspicion of malignant (cystic) lesion; Early surgery is favored over surgery in a more advanced stage of disease to achieve optimal long-term pain relief; In patients with an enlarged pancreatic head, a combined drainage and resection procedure, such as the Frey, Beger, and Berne procedure, may be the treatment of choice; Pancreaticoduodenectomy is the most suitable surgical option for patients with groove pancreatitis; The risk of pancreatic carcinoma in patients with CP is too low (2% in 10 year) to recommend active screening or prophylactic surgery; Patients with hereditary CP have such a high risk of pancreatic cancer that prophylactic resection can be considered (lifetime risk of 40-55%). Weak agreement for procedure choice in patients with dilated duct and normal size pancreatic head: both the extended lateral pancreaticojejunostomy and Frey procedure seems to provide equivalent pain control in patients.

CONCLUSIONS

This international expert consensus guideline provides evidenced-based statements concerning key aspects in surgery and timing of intervention in CP. It is meant to guide clinical practitioners and surgeons in the treatment of patients with CP.

Large-Scale Beard Extraction Enhances the Cosmetic Results of Scalp Hair Restoration in Advanced Androgenetic Alopecia in East Asian Men: A Retrospective Study

INTRODUCTION

Beard hair serves as an important additional donor supply to support hair transplantation in hirsute patients with extensive alopecia and lacking sufficient occipital hair. However, the efficacy and safety of large-scale beard hair extraction have not been studied extensively in the East Asian population.

METHODS

Data obtained from hirsute patients with extensive alopecia who underwent hair transplantation between March 2017 and December 2018 at Nanfang Hospital were analyzed. Occipital and beard hair were evaluated separately during the pre-, intra-, and post-operative periods. Individual beard hair follicular units (FUs) were harvested under tumescence using a hollow punch with an outer diameter of 0.8-0.9 mm. Follow-up examinations were scheduled at 3-5 days, 1 month, and 9 months postoperatively to check for complications, determine the survival rate of mixed, transplanted FU grafts, and assess patient satisfaction. Data were collected and analyzed statistically.

RESULTS

A total of 36 hirsute, male patients with advanced androgenetic alopecia (AGA) (Norwood-Hamilton V-VI) were included in this study. The density of the occipital and beard areas was 78.6 ± 4.6 and 48.4 ± 9.3 FU, respectively. It took 3.1 ± 0.9 h to harvest 3135 ± 863 FUs from the occipital area and 2.1 ± 0.6 h to harvest 2352 ± 599 FUs from the beard area. The transection rate for occipital FUs and beard FUs was 3.7 ± 0.4 and 3.9 ± 0.2%, respectively. Completion of the operation took approximately 10.0 ± 0.9 h, and no serious complications were reported 5 days after the procedure. An FU survival rate of 95.7 ± 1.6% was observed at 9 months after transplantation, with no visible hypopigmented scars observed in the bare areas. All patients were satisfied with the resulting cosmetic appearance.

CONCLUSION

Large-scale beard extraction, when combined with occipital hair extraction, is a safe and effective treatment to enhance the cosmetic appearance of East Asian men with advanced AGA.

Comparison of Experimental Infection of Normal and Immunosuppressed Chickens with Mycoplasma gallisepticum

Four different models of infection of chickens with Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) were evaluated. Normal or immunosuppressed chicks (10 days old) were infected with the MG R_low strain via eye and nasal drops or by direct air sac injection. Bacterial load in the lungs was quantified and air sac and tracheal lesion scores, tracheal mucosal thickness and humoral immune responses were assessed. Serum antibody responses were assessed by use of a serum plate agglutination test. Three days post infection (dpi), all immunosuppressed chicks had developed significant respiratory signs. Chicks infected via air sac injection had significant differences in serum antibody and gross lesion scores at 5 dpi. All chicks had developed pathological changes by 7 dpi. Air sac inoculation of immunosuppressed chicks produced more significant (P ≤0.05) lesions, and these birds had the highest bacterial load in the lungs compared with other groups.

Efficacy of Platelet-rich Plasma for Treating Androgenic Alopecia of Varying Grades

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has received growing attention as a valuable therapeutic tool in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). However, knowledge regarding specific effectiveness and satisfaction of PRP for different grades of AGA in male pattern hair loss (MPHL) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is missing. This study aims to ascertain and compare the efficacy and safety of PRP treatment for different grades of AGA in males and females over 6 months.

METHODS

In this study, 51 MPHL patients with Norwood-Hamilton stage II-V and 42 FPHL patients with Ludwig stage I to III were enrolled for 6 monthly sessions of PRP injections. A longitudinal analysis was used to compare the hair density, thickness, and hair pull test over 6 months for MPHL and FPHL through generalized estimating equation (GEE) models. Phototrichograms of scalp inflammation and oil secretion, global photographs and overall patient satisfaction were also assessed.

RESULTS

Consequently, improvement of hair density, hair thickness, hair pull test, the level of scalp inflammation and oil secretion were observed with statistical significance in all stages for both MPHL and FPHL at 6 months. Noteworthy, lower level of alopecia (Grade II, III in MPHL and Grade I in FPHL) had better response to PRP, and also had a better tendency of increment of hair growth than that of high-grade patients with prolonged treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

PRP injections, as an efficacious and reliable therapy, can be recommended for Grade II and Grade III in MPHL and Grade I in FPHL.

Sustained release of dermal papilla-derived extracellular vesicles from injectable microgel promotes hair growth

Hair regeneration has long captured researchers' attention because alopecia is a common condition and current therapeutic approaches have significant limitations. Dermal papilla (DP) cells serve as a signaling center in hair follicles and regulate hair formation and cycling by paracrine secretion. Secreted EVs are important signaling mediators for intercellular communication, and DP-derived extracellular vesicles (DP-EVs) may play an important role in hair regeneration. However, the instability of EVs in vivo and their low long-term retention after transplantation hinder their use in clinical applications.

Methods: Human DP-EVs were encapsulated in partially oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) hydrogels, yielding OSA-encapsulated EVs (OSA-EVs), which act as a sustained-release system to increase the potential therapeutic effect of DP-EVs. The ability of the OSA-EVs to protect protein was assessed. The hair regeneration capacity of OSA-EVs, as well as the underlying mechanism, was explored in hair organ culture and a mouse model of depilation.

Results: The OSA-EVs were approximately 100 μm in diameter, and as the hydrogel degraded, DP-EVs were gradually released. In addition, the hydrogel markedly increased the stability of vesicular proteins and increased the retention of EVs in vitro and in vivo. The OSA-EVs significantly facilitated proliferation of hair matrix cells, prolonged anagen phase in cultured human hairs, and accelerated the regrowth of back hair in mice after depilation. These effects may be due to upregulation of hair growth-promoting signaling molecules such as Wnt3a and β-catenin, and downregulation of inhibitory molecule BMP2.

Conclusion: This study demonstrated that OSA hydrogels promote the therapeutic effects of DP-EVs, and indicate that our novel OSA-EVs could be used to treat alopecia.

Effect of Behavioral Factors on Severity of Female Pattern Hair Loss: An Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis

Background: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is one of the most common types of hair loss with complex genetic predisposition. A frontal pattern hair loss with ponytail hairstyle is pervasively seen among young Chinese women. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between the severity of FPHL and behavioral factors which include dietary, and sleep habits, and to test the hypothesis on whether ponytail hairstyle is an independent factor that increases the risks of being more severe on the FPHL scale. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed with a structured questionnaire in this study. The severity of FPHL was graded according to basic and specific (BASP) classifications. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors related to the severity of FPHL. Results: 1,825 participants with different severities of FPHL completed the questionnaire. Ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed that the age group between thirty and forty years (OR:2.03, 95% CI: 1.56,2. 65), insufficient time with poor quality (OR:1.30, 95% CI: 1.05,1.62), presence of alcohol consumption (OR:2.15, 95% CI: 1.14,4.42), ponytail hairstyles (OR:2.03, 95% CI: 1.40,2.96), and oily scalps (OR:2.00, 95% CI: 1.65,2.43) were risk factors which increased the odds of being in the more severe type of FPHL, compared to the age group that ranged from eighteen to thirty years, sufficient sleep with good quality, without alcohol consumption, ponytail hairstyles, and oily scalps. Conclusion: Avoiding alcohol consumption and ponytail hairstyles, in combination with proper control of scalp oil, improve sleep quality with sufficient time may help prevent FPHL from deteriorating to the more severe type.

A novel model for designing and performing parietal whorl hair transplantation

BACKGROUND

Hair transplantation is the gold standard method for the treatment of alopecia. Recently, demand for the surgery has increased rapidly. However, high demands also require more professional training for the surgeons. With the maturing of hairline design skills, parietal whorl design has become the next challenge and no appropriate training models have yet been reported.

AIMS

To present an innovative, simple, and appropriate training model for designing the scalp parietal whorl.

METHODS

Outward divergent arc curves were drawn from the navel of an orange. Recipient sites were created with 23G needles or 1.0-mm knives or 1.0-mm blades according to the outward divergent arc curves, then hair shafts were transplanted using forceps.

RESULTS

Different densities of hair shafts were transplanted. Transplantation of 10-20 follicular units (FU)/cm² was too sparse, 30 FU/cm² achieved a good appearance, but 40-50 FU/cm² was better. Through practicing on the model, excellent results of parietal whorl transplantation on patients can be achieved.

CONCLUSIONS

This new model can perfectly suit the lines and direction of the parietal whorl and also present different density transplantation practicing. We provide a training method for new surgeons as well as a rehearsal opportunity for previously trained doctors.

Validity and reliability of three-dimensional costal cartilage imaging for donor-site assessment and clinical application in microtia reconstruction patients: A prospective study of 22 cases

OBJECTIVES

This study assesses the ability to reconstruct costal cartilage images by using three-dimensional visualisation software (Mimics) based on semi-automated segmentation algorithm and to investigate its reliability and validity with an anthropometric analysis.

DESIGN

Observational prospective study.

SETTING

Plastic surgery department of a tertiary hospital.

PARTICIPANTS

Twenty-two microtia patients who underwent autologous ear reconstruction.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Preoperative thoracic computed tomography data were processed to Mimics software for three-dimensional costal cartilage imaging. The length, width, thickness and volume of the 9th costal cartilages were calculated from these images and compared with the direct measurements (DM) obtained intraoperatively.

RESULTS

The intra-examiner reliability and inter-examiner reliability were high in terms of all four measurements (intraclass correlation coefficients, ICC: 0.876-0.984). There were no significant differences between image-based anthropometry and DM in the linear measurements except for the volume (P < .05). The mean volume calculation error of Mimics was -0.08 ± 0.13 mL. No correlation was found between the anthropometric variables and the absolute errors (P > .05). Furthermore, Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate the agreement between the two methods.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite a very small error was found in volume calculation, Mimics software was accurate and reliable in linear calculation. Three-dimensional costal cartilage imaging was found to be an efficient tool for morphological evaluation of costal cartilages. We believe that with the application of individualised cartilage models based on three-dimensional printing, the use of customised ear framework carving will be practicable in surgical training.

The relationship between self-esteem and hair transplantation satisfaction in male androgenetic alopecia patients

BACKGROUND

Frustrated with the embarrassing appearance, patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) suffer from poor quality of life and low self-esteem. Moreover, several researches indicate that self-esteem is an important factor affecting outcomes of cosmetic surgery.

OBJECTIVE

This retrospective study aims to investigate the impact of hair transplantation on patients' self-esteem and satisfaction with appearance, as well as relationship between self-esteem and patient satisfaction which includes preoperative and postoperative satisfaction.

METHODS

The preoperative and 9-month postoperative self-esteem were evaluated by Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and preoperative satisfaction indicators (satisfaction with appearance, visual age and expected visual age) were assessed by Face-Q scale. At the same time, postoperative satisfaction indicators (satisfaction with appearance, visual age, satisfaction with decision, psychological well-being, and social function) were reevaluated as well.

RESULTS

Of the 1106 male AGA patients, 875 completed a 9-month postoperative questionnaire. Compared with preoperative scores, postoperative scores of self-esteem and satisfaction with appearance showed an increase of 1.56 and 30.25 respectively (P < 0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that patients with high self-esteem level trended to have higher scores of postoperative satisfaction with appearance (P = 0.129), psychological well-being (P = 0.168), social function (P = 0.027), and satisfaction with decision (P = 0.043) compared with patients with low and average self-esteem level.

CONCLUSION

Hair transplantation significantly elevated self-esteem level and increased satisfaction with appearance of AGA patients. Meanwhile, patients with low self-esteem level trended to have worse postoperative satisfaction. Thus, apart from ensuring the quality of operation, plastic surgeons should offer guidance based on patients' psychological state to improve postoperative satisfaction.

Expression Patterns, Molecular Characterization, and Response to Host Stress of CYP Genes from Phenacoccus solenopsis (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae)

The quarantine insect pest Phenacoccus solenopsis (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) has a broad host range and is distributed worldwide. Each year, P. solenopsis causes significant crop losses. The detoxification of various xenobiotic compounds involves the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP) superfamily of enzymes. However, the functions of CYPs in P. solenopsis are poorly understood. In the present study, P. solenopsis was reared from the egg to the adult stage on three host plants: Tomato, cotton, and hibiscus. Thirty-seven P. solenopsis CYP genes were identified and their phylogenetic relationships were analyzed. Eleven CYP genes (PsCYP4NT1, PsCYP4G219, PsCYP6PZ1, PsCYP6PZ5, PsCYP301B1, PsCYP302A1, PsCYP305A22, PsCYP315A1, PsCYP353F1, PsCYP3634A1, and PsCYP3635A2) were selected for quantitative real-time PCR analysis. The results demonstrated marked differences in CYP expression levels in P. solenopsis grown on different host plants. The results will aid the molecular characterization of CYPs and will increase our understanding of CYP expression patterns in P. solenopsis during development and growth on different hosts.

Use of extracellular matrix hydrogel from human placenta to restore hair-inductive potential of dermal papilla cells

Aim: To explore the feasibility of human placenta extracellular matrix (HPECM) hydrogel in restoring the hair-inductive capacity of high-passaged (P8) dermal papilla cells (DPCs) for hair follicle regeneration. Materials & methods: HPECM hydrogel was prepared following decellularization and enzymatic solubilization treatment. DPCs isolated from human scalp were cultured in 2D and 3D environments. The hair-inductive ability of DPCs was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR, immunofluorescence staining, immunoblotting and patch assay. Results: DPCs (P8) formed spheres when cultured on the HPECM hydrogel. The expression levels of Versican, ALP, and β-catenin were restored in the DP spheres. HPECM hydrogel-cultured DP spheres co-grafted with newborn mouse epidermal cells regenerated new hair follicle. Conclusion: HPECM hydrogel successfully restores the hair-inductive capacity of high-passaged DPCs.

Triptolide induces mitochondrial apoptosis through modulating dual specificity phosphatase 1/mitogen-activated protein kinases cascade in osteosarcoma cells

Due to chemoresistance and metastasis, the overall prognosis of osteosarcoma (OS) has not improved over the last two decades. Exploring novel therapeutic agents that can circumvent theses malignant phenotypes of OS would be essential to improve the survival of OS patients. Triptolide is a unique diterpene triepoxide that possesses potent antitumor activities.However, the effects and mechanism of triptolide on OS cells remain unknown. The effects of triptolide on viability, apoptosis, cell cycle distribution and migratory ability of OS cells were measured using MTT, flow cytometry and wound healing and transwell invasion assays. And an OS tumor xenograft mouse model was produced to further study the in vivo antitumor effects of triptolide. The expression of DUSP1 at the protein and mRNA level in OS cells was detected by western blot and qPCR. We report that triptolide exhibits multidimensional antitumor activities in OS cells, including the induction of apoptosis and G1 phase accumulation, inhibition of cell viability, migration, and invasion. We further demonstrate that triptolide inhibits the expression of dual-specificity protein phosphatase1 (DUSP1) through inhibiting its promoter activity, which causes sustained activation of three subfamilies of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). And the modulation of DUSP1/MAPK cascade is associated with the apoptosis of OS cells, since the ectopic expression of DUSP1 or the inhibition of MAPK using specific inhibitors can counteract triptolide-induced apoptosis. In addition, triptolide enhances doxorubicin-induced apoptosis. In summary, our study suggests that DUSP1 is an important cellular target of triptolide, and triptolide may be a promising treatment option for OS as a single agent or combined with other chemotherapeutics.

Knockdown of Tripartite Motif Containing 28 suppresses the migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in ovarian carcinoma cells through down-regulation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway

Tripartite motif containing 28 (TRIM28) is a transcriptional corepressor of Kruppel-associated box zinc finger protein, which has been reported to participate in carcinogenesis. Nonetheless, whether TRIM28 plays a role in the metastasis of ovarian carcinoma (OC) is unclear and requires further investigation. In this study, two OC cell lines (A2780 and OVCAR-3) with stable low expression of TRIM28 were established via RNA interference. We found that the migratory and invasive ability of TRIM28-silenced OC cells significantly decreased. The expression and activity of matrix metallopeptidase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 in these OC cells were inhibited. The TRIM28 shRNA also suppressed the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of OC cells as evidenced by the up-regulated E-cadherin and the downregulated Vimentin and N-cadherin. Additionally, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway was suppressed in TRIM28-silenced OC cells: the activity of β-catenin was inhibited, the expression of total and nuclear β-catenin, Axin 2, T-cell factor 1 (TCF1) and lymphoid enhancer binding factor 1 (LEF1) were decreased, whereas the phosphorylation of β-catenin at Ser33/37 was enhanced. Further, re-expression of active β-catenin in TRIM28-silenced OC cells partly restored their metastasis in vitro. Taken together, our study demonstrates a contributory role of TRIM28 in OC metastasis in vitro, suggesting TRIM28 as a novel therapeutic target for this malignant tumor.

Molecular characterization and expression patterns of Phenacoccus solenopsis (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) heat shock protein genes and their response to host stress

As a polyphagous insect, little is known at the molecular level about the effects of different host plants on physiological changes in Phenacoccus solenopsis. In this study, four heat shock protein (Hsp) genes (PsHsp60, PsHsp70, PsHsp90, and PsHsp20.7) were identified from the transcriptome of P. solenopsis. Analysis of Hsp expression levels revealed significant differences in Hsp gene expression levels in P. solenopsis fed on different host plants. In host conversion tests, the expression levels of PsHsp90 and PsHsp60 were upregulated after transfer of second instar nymphs from tomato to cotton. The expression levels of PsHsp70 and PsHsp20.7 were, respectively, significantly upregulated at 9 and 48 hr after transfer from tomato to Hibiscus. The results of this study aid molecular characterization and understanding of the expression patterns of Hsp genes during different developmental stages and host transfer of P. solenopsis.
