Abstract
Dedicator of cytokinesis 3 (Dock3) belongs to an atypical family of the guanine nucleotide exchange factors. It is predominantly expressed in the neural tissues and causes cellular morphological changes by activating the small GTPase Rac1. We previously reported that Dock3 overexpression protects retinal ganglion cells from excitotoxic cell death. Oligodendrocytes are the myelinating cells of axons in the central nervous system and these cells are damaged in demyelinating disorders including multiple sclerosis (MS) and optic neuritis. In this study, we examined if Dock3 is expressed in oligodendrocytes and if increasing Dock3 signals can suppress demyelination in a cuprizone-induced demyelination model, an animal model of MS. We demonstrate that Dock3 is expressed in oligodendrocytes and Dock3 overexpression protects myelin in the corpus callosum following cuprizone treatment. Furthermore, we show that cuprizone demyelinates optic nerves and the extent of demyelination is ameliorated in mice overexpressing Dock3. Cuprizone treatment impairs visual function, which was demonstrated by multifocal electroretinograms, an established non-invasive method, and Dock3 overexpression prevented this effect. In mice overexpressing Dock3, Erk activation is increased, suggesting this may at least partly explain the observed protective effects. Our findings suggest that Dock3 may be a therapeutic target for demyelinating disorders including optic neuritis.

Abstract
The structure and protein resistance of oligo(ethylene glycol)-terminated self-assembled monolayers (OEG-SAMs) have been studied intensively using various techniques. However, their molecular-scale surface structures have not been well understood. In this study, we performed molecular-resolution imaging of OH-terminated SAMs (OH-SAMs) and hexa(ethylene glycol) SAMs (EG(6)OH-SAMs) formed on a Au(111) surface in an aqueous solution by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). The results show that most of the ethylene glycol (EG) chains in an EG(6)OH-SAM are closely packed and well-ordered to present a molecularly flat surface even in an aqueous solution. In addition, we found that EG(6)OH-SAMs have nanoscale defects, where molecules take a disordered arrangement with their molecular axes parallel to the substrate surface. We also found that the domain size (50-200 nm) of an EG(6)OH-SAM is much larger than that of OH-SAMs (10-40 nm). These findings should significantly advance molecular-scale understanding about the surface structure of OEG-SAMs.

Abstract
The standard therapy against hepatitis C virus (HCV) recurrence postliver transplantation includes interferon (IFN)α and ribavirin. IFNL4 ss469415590 polymorphism has been reported as a novel predictor of the response to IFN therapy for chronic HCV infection. We examined the impact of IFNL4 polymorphism on the responsiveness to IFN therapy after liver transplantation. Tissue specimens were collected from 80 HCV-infected recipients and 78 liver donors, and their IFNL4 ss469415590 genotype, hepatic IFNL4 and interferon-stimulated genes' mRNA expression levels were examined. The association of the polymorphism and expression levels in terms of the IFN therapy response to HCV recurrence was analysed. Most individuals who had rs8099917 risk alleles also had ss469415590 risk alleles (R(2) = 0.9). Sustained virological response (SVR) rates were higher in both liver graft recipients and transplants with ss469415590 TT/TT alleles than in those with the risk ΔG allele (P = 0.003 and P = 0.005, respectively). In recipients with ss469415590 TT/TT, IFNL4 TT mRNA levels showed no significant differences between livers of patients who responded to therapy and those who did not (P = 0.4). In recipients with the risk ΔG allele, IFNL4 ΔG mRNA expression levels were significantly lower in SVR patients than in non-SVR patients (P = 0.02). Hepatic interferon stimulable genes and IFNL4 mRNA expression were correlated. Our findings suggest that analysing the ss469415590 genotype and IFNL4 ΔG expression provides a novel prediction strategy for the possible response to IFN therapy after liver transplantation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was performed to 1) quantify dentists' treatment thresholds for occlusal primary caries; 2) determine if the patient's age affects dentists' decisions to surgically treat these carious lesions; and 3) test the hypothesis that patients', dentists', and practices' characteristics are significantly associated with surgical enamel intervention. METHODS The study used a cross-sectional design consisting of a questionnaire survey in Japan. This study queried dentists working in outpatient dental practices who were affiliated with the Dental Practice-Based Research Network Japan (JDPBRN), which aims to allow dentists to investigate research questions and share experiences and expertise (n=282). Participants were asked whether they would surgically intervene in a series of cases depicting occlusal caries. Each case included a photograph of an occlusal surface displaying typical characteristics of caries penetration and written descriptions of adult and pediatric patients at high caries risk. RESULTS In a case of a carious lesion within inner enamel, the proportion of dentists who indicated surgical intervention was significantly higher in adult patients (48%) when compared with pediatric patients (34%; p<0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that using a dental explorer for the diagnosis of primary occlusal caries, type of practice, practice busyness, and percentage of patients who self-pay were significantly associated with dentists' decisions to intervene surgically into the inner enamel carious lesion. CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrate that more than one-third of participants chose to intervene surgically into inner enamel carious lesions, and patients' age affects dentists' decisions about when to intervene surgically (clinicaltrials.gov registration number NCT01680848).

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been shown that certain personality traits are related to mortality and disease morbidity, but the biological mechanism linking them remains unclear. Telomeres are tandem repeat DNA sequences located at the ends of chromosomes, and shorter telomere length is a predictor of mortality and late-life disease morbidity. Thus, it is possible that personality traits influence telomere length. In the present study, we examined the relationship of leukocyte telomere length with personality traits in healthy subjects. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The subjects were 209 unrelated healthy Japanese who were recruited from medical students at 4th-5th grade. Assessment of personality traits was performed by the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Leukocyte relative telomere length was determined by a quantitative real-time PCR method for a ratio of telomere/single copy gene. RESULTS In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, shorter telomere length was related to lower scores of neuroticism (P<0.01) and conscientiousness (P<0.05) of the NEO-PI-R, and lower scores of harm avoidance (P<0.05) and reward dependence (P<0.05) of the TCI. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that leukocyte telomere length is associated with some personality traits, and this association may be implicated in the relationship between personality traits and mortality.

Abstract
We study influence of electric field penetration into H(-) ion source plasma with three-electrode beam extraction system. Clear change in the plasma potential due to the field penetration is observed in case of low gap voltage between a plasma electrode and an extraction electrode. Influence of lens voltage on the second electrode, which is normally utilized to focus the extracted beam, on ion source plasma is evaluated separating contributions of H(-) density in the plasma and extraction probability of H(-) ions from the plasma by two kinds of photodetachment techniques. In our operation condition, we found that the lens voltage is also useful to enhance the H(-) density in the plasma, though it negatively affects the extraction probability.

Abstract
Angle-resolved energy distribution functions of positive and negative hydrogen ions produced from a rough-finished Si surface under 1 keV proton irradiation have been measured. The corresponding distribution from a crystalline surface and a carbon surface are also measured for comparison. Intensities of positive and negative ions from the rough-finished Si are substantially smaller than those from crystalline Si. The angular distributions of these species are broader for rough surface than the crystalline surface. No significant temperature dependence for positive and negative ion intensities is observed for all samples in the temperature range from 300 to 400 K.

Abstract
Abstract The condition of a 29-year-old woman with primary Sjögren syndrome (SS) was complicated by amyloid light chains- (AL-) type amyloidosis in the paranasal sinus. She had not complained of respiratory symptoms, but her chest computed tomography (CT) scan revealed bilateral multiple nodular shadows. Lung biopsy specimens using video-associated thoracoscopy showed amyloidoma in a subpleural nodular lesion and amyloid deposits in the interstitial parenchymal walls and pulmonary vessels. Pulmonary AL amyloidosis, presumably related to a chronic inflammatory lymphoproliferative process in SS, has rarely been reported.

Abstract
Abstract A 31-year-old woman who had been administered corticosteroid and immunosuppressive agents for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) without flare-up was diagnosed as having reactive hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) with severe disseminated intravascular coagulation. The causative underlying disease was uncertain, but it was not the SLE itself. Her fulminant HPS with increased serum ferritin and inflammatory cytokines (sIL-2R, TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ) was successfully treated with plasmapheresis and high-dose γ-globulin therapy.

Abstract
Electron acceleration associated with various plasma kinetic instabilities in a nonrelativistic shock with very high Alfvén Mach number (M(A)~45) is revealed by means of a two-dimensional fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulation. Electromagnetic (ion Weibel) and electrostatic (ion-acoustic and Buneman) instabilities are strongly activated at the same time in different regions of the two-dimensional shock structure. Relativistic electrons are quickly produced predominantly by the shock surfing mechanism with the Buneman instability at the leading edge of the foot. The energy spectrum has a high-energy tail exceeding the upstream ion kinetic energy accompanying the main thermal population. This gives a favorable condition for the ion-acoustic instability at the shock front, which in turn results in additional energization. The large-amplitude ion Weibel instability generates current sheets in the foot, implying another dissipation mechanism via magnetic reconnection in a three-dimensional shock structure in the very-high-M(A) regime.

Abstract
In a bulk solid, optical control of atomic motion provides a better understanding of its physical properties and functionalities. Such studies would benefit from active control and visualization of atomic motions in arbitrary directions, yet, so far, mostly only one-dimensional control has been shown. Here we demonstrate a novel method to optically control and visualize two-dimensional atomic motions in a bulk solid. We use a femtosecond laser pulse to coherently superpose two orthogonal atomic motions in crystalline bismuth. The relative amplitudes of those two motions are manipulated by modulating the intensity profile of the laser pulse, and these controlled motions are quantitatively visualized by density functional theory calculations. Our control-visualization scheme is based on the simple, robust and universal concept that in any physical system, two-dimensional particle motion is decomposed into two orthogonal one-dimensional motions, and thus it is applicable to a variety of condensed matter systems. Controlling the motion of atoms in solids with light allows for a deeper understanding of their fundamental properties, yet most studies only deal with one spatial dimension. Katsuki et al. extend this approach to two-dimensional control and use it to visualize atomic motion in bismuth.

Abstract
The pull-through angioplasty technique allows stable wire tension and stabilization of the device during the procedure. In this technique, a guide wire is passed from one sheath to another, usually with the aid of a snare device. We describe the treatment of occlusive subclavian artery disease and lesion at the origin of the vertebral artery employing a brachiofemoral pull-through technique without using a snare device. In this technique, the guide wire is advanced from the femoral artery to the brachial artery. The guide wire is directly inserted into the sheath placed at the brachial artery. The brachial artery is compressed proximal to the point of sheath insertion to prevent bleeding. The sheath is extracted temporally and the guide wire is caught outside of the body. The sheath is then introduced again through the guide wire. We used the pull-through technique without a snare device in seven cases, and we were able to build the pull-through system in six of these cases without a snare device. This pull-through technique without a snare device is not difficult to use, and may reduce the time and cost of angioplasty procedures.

Abstract
Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the effects of nest availability and body size on changes in male mating tactics from sneaking to nest-holding in the dusky frillgoby Bathygobius fuscus. In the field, the body size of nest-holding males decreased from early to mid-breeding season, suggesting the possibility of a change in the tactics of sneaker males to nest-holding. Many sneaker males did not use vacant spawning nests even when size-matched nests were available, but they continued to reproduce as sneakers. Similarly, in aquarium experiments with available vacant nests, some sneaker males became nest-holders irrespective of their body size, but some did not. These results showed that nest availability is not a limiting factor for changes in tactics by sneaker males in this species. Because tactic-unchanged sneaker males were co-housed with larger nest-holding males in the tanks, the body size of nearby nest-holding males may have affected the decision to change tactics for sneaker males. Moreover, smaller individuals among tactic-changed males tended to spend more time until spawning, probably because they had relatively larger costs and smaller benefits of reproduction as nest-holding males compared to larger males.

Abstract
This study investigates the combined effect of silicic acid and bamboo vinegar compound liquid (SPV) on the growth and intestinal histological alterations in poultry. Forty-eight 7-day-old male Sanuki Cochin chickens were fed a commercial mash diet supplemented with SPV at 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3% level ad libitum for 112 days. Body weight gain tended to improve with increased concentrations of dietary SPV, although these results were not statistically significant (P<0.1). Tissue observation by light microscopy revealed that the jejunal villus height (P<0.01) and duodenal and jejunal villus area (P<0.05) increased in the 0.2 and 0.3% SPV groups, respectively, compared with the control. Cell mitosis within the duodenum and jejunum also increased in the 0.2 and 0.3% SPV groups. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a prominent increase in the number of protuberant cells on the villus apical surface of the duodenum and jejunum for the 0.2 and 0.3% SPV groups compared with the control. Poultry in the 0.3% SPV group had the highest body weight gain and hypertrophied histological alterations of intestinal villi. Fluorescent microscopic images of cell mitosis and protuberant cells in the duodenal crypt clearly confirmed positive reactions for the activator protein 2α (AP-2α) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), compared with the control. The present results indicate that dietary SPV stimulates adsorption by the epithelial cells, which activate cell proliferation and self-renewal and regulate the expression of cell cycle regulators AP-2α and PCNA, resulting in higher body weight gain. Thus, we can conclude that a concentration of 0.3% dietary SPV is ideal for promoting growth in poultry.

Abstract
To clarify the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a risk factor for gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, and proteinase-activated receptors (PARs) that contribute to inflammatory responses, we determined and characterized the biological activity of H. pylori components in the mammalian cells that express PARs. The activity of H. pylori extracts was assessed in distinct cell lines with high expression of PAR1 (RGM1 cells), PAR2 (A549 cells), or PAR2 and PAR4 (HCT-15 cells). A PAR1-activating peptide (AP), but not H. pylori extracts, caused prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) release in RGM1 cells. On the other hand, H. pylori extracts produced release of PGE2 and interleukin-8 (IL-8) in A549 and HCT-15 cells, respectively, as a PAR2-AP did. The activity of H. pylori extracts in A549 cells was not affected by a proteinase inhibitor or exposure to boiling, but abolished by inhibitors of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), IRAK-1/4 or NF-κB. The activity of H. pylori extracts in HCT-15 cells was partially suppressed by boiling or the proteinase inhibitor. In rat platelets that express PAR4 and PAR3, like a PAR4-AP, H. pylori extracts induced aggregation when assessed in platelet rich plasma, an effect unaffected by the proteinase inhibitor, but did not cause aggregation of washed rat platelets that responded to the PAR4-AP or thrombin. The present study thus shows the biological activities of H. pylori extracts in A549 and HCT-15 cells or rat platelets, and suggests that they are not mediated by any PAR-activating proteinases, but may involve the other pathogenic factors including LPS.

Abstract
β-YbAlB(4) is the unique heavy fermion superconductor that exhibits unconventional quantum criticality without tuning in a strongly intermediate valence state. Despite the large coherence temperature, set by the peak of the longitudinal resistivity, our Hall effect measurements reveal that resonant skew scattering from incoherent local moments persists down to at least ~40 K, where the Hall coefficient exhibits a distinct minimum signaling another formation of coherence. The observation strongly suggests that the hybridization between f moments and conduction electrons has a two-component character with distinct Kondo or coherence scales T(K) of ~40 K and 200 K; this is confirmed by the magnetic field dependence of ρ(xy).

Abstract
This study was conducted to assess caries treatment thresholds among Japanese dentists and to identify characteristics associated with their decision to intervene surgically in proximal caries lesions within the enamel. Participants (n = 189) were shown radiographic images depicting interproximal caries and asked to indicate the lesion depth at which they would surgically intervene in both high- and low-caries-risk scenarios. Differences in treatment thresholds were then assessed via chi-square tests, and associations between the decision to intervene and dentist, practice, and patient characteristics were analyzed via logistic regression. The proportion of dentists who indicated surgical intervention into enamel was significantly higher in the high-caries-risk scenario (73.8%, N = 138) than in the low-caries-risk scenario (46.5%, N = 87) (p < 0.001). In multivariate analyses for a high-caries-risk scenario, gender of dentist, city population, type of practice, conducting caries-risk assessment, and administering diet counseling were significant factors associated with surgical enamel intervention. However, for a low-caries-risk scenario, city population, type of practice, and use of a dental explorer were the factors significantly associated with surgical enamel intervention. These findings demonstrate that restorative treatment thresholds for interproximal primary caries differ by caries risk. Most participants would restore lesions within the enamel for high-caries-risk individuals.

Abstract
The central nervous system (CNS) of mammals has long been thought of as an immunologically privileged site. However, this concept is now changing because the rejection of histo-incompatible neural grafts has been frequently observed in the CNS. In neural transplantation used as therapy for some human neurodegenerative diseases, it is important to determine which factors are related to brain graft rejection. In this study, we examined immunological reactions in brains that had received isogeneic (rat to rat) and xenogeneic (mouse to rat) neural transplants. In the immunohistochemical analysis, antibodies against T cell receptor αβ (R73), macrophage and microglia (0X42), MHC class II antigens (0X6), CD4 (W3/25), CD8 (0X8), NK cell (3.2.3), B cell (RLN-9D3), T cell receptor (TCR) Vβ8.2 (R78), TCR Vβ8.5 (B73) and TCR Vβl0 (G101) were used. At the early stage of both isogeneic and xenogeneic transplantation, a nonspecific inflammatory reaction characterized by macrophage infiltration was observed along the needle track which was produced by the grafting procedure. From the day 7 stage onwards, the non-specific inflammatory reaction was replaced by the specific immune reactions of T cell infiltration, neovascularization and necrosis of xenogeneic grafts. Marked T cell infiltration was detected in the lesions, whereas NK and B cells were not. Quantitative analysis of T cell subsets revealed that both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were found in the xenogeneic transplants. Microglia became activated and strongly expressed MHC class II antigens at the time of graft rejection. Isogeneic transplants, in contrast, showed no histological characteristics of rejection, and numerous dopaminergic neurons with several neurites were observed in the grafts. Based on these findings, we concluded that T cells are the principal effectors in the rejection of xenogeneic neural grafts, and that activated microglia may have some role in presenting antigens to the infiltrating T cells during the rejection process.
