Abstract
A novel silver hyper ring and its complex nanostructures are designed and its plasmonic properties are investigated numerically. It is found that these hyper ring structures have relative stable optical features. The absorption cross section of the structure changes slightly when the direction and polarization of incident light is adjusting. For the complex structure, the position of each resonance peak does not present obvious change when the relative position of the inner hyper ring and outside larger ring changes. The result of the investigation has great significance for the production of practical nanostructures and the improvement of possible applications.

Abstract
A versatile one-step thermolysis protocol is demonstrated to produce a uniform dispersion of tetragonal double tungstates NaRE(WO4)2 (RE = rare earth) nanocrystals (NCs). Oriented attachment in the [001] direction occurred. Doping with luminescent RE(3+) ions resulted in highly luminescent NCs showing characteristic line emission of the dopant as well as a blue emission assigned to surface adsorbed organic species.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the impact of anti-HER2 therapy and response of primary tumor on distant disease free survival (DDFS) of the patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. METHODS The clinical data of the patients with HER2-positive breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant systemic therapy were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS Patients treated with preoperative anti-HER2 therapy and chemotherapy had a significant improved pathological complete response (pCR) rate (48.4%) compared with those treated with preoperative chemotherapy (17.2%) (P=0.000). The median follow-up period was 62(6-160) months. The 5-year DDFS in patients with anti-HER2 therapy and patients without anti-HER2 therapy was 93.5% and 83.3% respectively (P=0.006). The 5-year DDFS in patients achieving a pCR and patients not achieving a pCR was 94.7% and 82.6% respectively(P=0.001). Among patients achieving a pCR, anti-HER2 therapy did not improve DDFS significantly (P=0.960). Benefits of anti-HER2 therapy in DDFS among patients without a pCR achieved statistical significance (P=0.028). CONCLUSIONS Combination of neoadjuvant anti-HER2 therapy and chemotherapy resulted in a higher pCR rate in HER2-overexpressing primary breast cancer. Patients treated with neoadjuvant systemic therapy who achieved a pCR have excellent outcome regardless of whether they received anti-HER2 therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of corporoplasty with autologous tunica vaginalis graft in the treatment of Peyronie's disease. METHODS Ten patients with Peyronie's disease underwent plaque excision and corporoplasty with autologous tunica vaginalis graft. We obtained and compared IIEF-5 scores of the patients before and at 1 and 5 years after operation. RESULTS After surgery, penile curvature was obviously relieved and all the patients achieved normal penile erection and satisfactory sexual intercourse without erection-related pain or recurrent erectile dysfunction. The mean IIEF-5 score was significantly improved at 1 year (22.40±1.08) and 5 years postoperatively (23.00±1.14) as compared with the baseline, (19.20±2.28) (P<0.05 or 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Corporoplasty with autologous tunica vaginalis graft is a safe, simple and effective option for the treatment of Peyronie's disease, though its definite efficiency is to be further supported by large-sample clinical studies.

Abstract
The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) reference male and female adult phantoms, described in Publication 110, are voxel phantoms based on whole-body computed tomography scans of a male and a female patient, respectively. The voxel in-plane resolution and the slice thickness, of the order of a few millimetres, are insufficient for proper segmentation of smaller tissues such as the lens of the eye, the skin, and the walls of some organs. The calculated doses for these tissues therefore present some limitations, particularly for weakly penetrating radiation. Similarly, the Publication 110 phantoms cannot represent 8-40-µm-thick target regions in respiratory or alimentary tract organs. Separate stylised models have been used to represent these tissues for calculation of the ICRP reference dose coefficients (DCs). ICRP Committee 2 recently initiated a research project, the ultimate goal of which is to convert the Publication 110 phantoms to a high-quality polygon-mesh (PM) format, including all source and target regions, even those of the 8-40-µm-thick alimentary and respiratory tract organs. It is expected that the converted phantoms would lead to the same or very similar DCs as the Publication 110 reference phantoms for penetrating radiation and, at the same time, provide more accurate DCs for weakly penetrating radiation and small tissues. Additionally, the reference phantoms in the PM format would be easily deformable and, as such, could serve as a starting point to create phantoms of various postures for use, for example, in accidental dose calculations. This paper will discuss the current progress of the phantom conversion project and its significance for ICRP DC calculations.

Abstract
Respiratory motion is one major complicating factor in many image acquisition applications and image-guided interventions. Existing respiratory motion estimation and compensation methods typically rely on breathing motion models learned from certain training data, and therefore may not be able to effectively handle intra-subject and/or inter-subject variations of respiratory motion. In this paper, we propose a respiratory motion compensation framework that directly recovers motion fields from sparsely spaced and efficiently acquired dynamic 2-D MRIs without using a learned respiratory motion model. We present a scatter-to-volume deformable registration algorithm to register dynamic 2-D MRIs with a static 3-D MRI to recover dense deformation fields. Practical considerations and approximations are provided to solve the scatter-to-volume registration problem efficiently. The performance of the proposed method was investigated on both synthetic and real MRI datasets, and the results showed significant improvements over the state-of-art respiratory motion modeling methods. We also demonstrated a potential application of the proposed method on MRI-based motion corrected PET imaging using hybrid PET/MRI.

Abstract
We investigated the influence of different fluid resuscitation techniques on the number of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in rats. Seventy-two healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into groups that received sham operation (Sham group), hypertonic saline (HRS group), lactated ringer's solution (LRS group), or crystalloid solution (LCRS group). Six rats from each group were sacrificed by cervical dislocation at 12, 24, and 48 h after resuscitation. The spleens were harvested under sterile conditions and spleen cell suspension was prepared. The number of MDSCs was detected using flow cytometry. The number of MDSCs in the Sham group did not differ significantly among the different time points. Compared with the Sham group, the number of MDSCs after the use of the different fluid resuscitation techniques increased to varying extents and the differences among the groups were significant. The number of MDSCs in the HRS group was much lower than that of the LRS and LCRS groups at both 24 and 48 h (P < 0.05). At 12 h, the number of MDSCs in the HRS group was significantly lower than that of the LRS group (P < 0.05). The differences between the HRS and LCRS groups were not statistically significant. Shortly after hemorrhagic shock resuscitation, the immune function of rats was suppressed to a varying extent and was gradually restored over time. Resuscitation with HRS alleviated the immunosuppression at the early stage after shock.

Abstract
PURPOSE Real-time 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) pose recovery and tracking from X-ray images is a key enabling technology for many interventional imaging applications. However, real-time 2D/3D registration is a very challenging problem because of the heavy computation in iterative digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR) generation. In this paper, we propose a real-time 2D/3D registration framework using library-based DRRs to achieve high computational efficiency. METHOD The proposed method pre-computes a library of canonical DRRs and reconstructs library-based DRRs (libDRRs) during registration without online rendering. The transformation parameters are decoupled to 2 geometry-relevant and 4 geometry-irrelevant ones so that canonical DRRs only need to cover the variation of 2 geometry-relevant parameters, making it practical to be pre-computed and stored. The 2D/3D registration using libDRRs is then solved as a hybrid optimization problem, i.e., continuous in geometry-irrelevant parameters while discrete in geometry-relevant parameters. RESULTS On 5 fluoroscopic sequences with 246 frames acquired during animal studies with a transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) probe in the field of view, 6DoF tracking of the TEE probe using the proposed method achieved a mean target registration error in the projection direction (mTREproj) of 0.81 mm, a success rate of 100 % (defined as mTREproj [Formula: see text]2.5 mm), and a registration frame rate of 23.1 fps on a pure CPU-based implementation executed in a single thread. CONCLUSION Using libDRRs with a hybrid optimization can significantly improve the computational efficiency (up to tenfold) for 6DoF pose recovery and tracking with little degradation in robustness and accuracy, compared to conventional intensity-based 2D/3D registration using ray casting DRRs with a continuous optimization.

Abstract
Algal carcass is a low-value byproduct of algae after its conversion to biodiesel. Dried algal carcass is rich in protein, carbohydrate, and multiple amino acids, and it is typically well suited for growth and acid production of lactic acid bacteria. In this study, Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus ATCC 11842 was used to ferment different algal carcass media (ACM), including 2% ACM, 2% ACM with 1.9% glucose (ACM-G), and 2% ACM with 1.9% glucose and 2g/L amino acid mixture (ACM-GA). Concentrations of organic acids (lactic acid and acetic acid), acetyl-CoA, and ATP were analyzed by HPLC, and activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), acetokinase (ACK), pyruvate kinase (PK), and phosphofructokinase (PFK) were determined by using a chemical approach. The growth of L. bulgaricus cells in ACM-GA was close to that in the control medium (de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe). Lactic acid and acetic acid contents were greatly reduced when L. bulgaricus cells were grown in ACM compared with the control medium. Acetyl-CoA content varied with organic acid content and was increased in cells grown in different ACM compared with the control medium. The ATP content of L. bulgaricus cells in ACM was reduced compared with that of cells grown in the control medium. Activities of PFK and ACK of L. bulgaricus cells grown in ACM were higher and those of PK and LDH were lower compared with the control. Thus, ACM rich in nutrients may serve as an excellent substrate for growth by lactic acid bacteria, and addition of appropriate amounts of glucose and amino acids can improve growth and acid production.

Abstract
Background Zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) play an important role in regulating plant responses to abiotic stress. However, little is known about the function of LSD1-like-type ZFP in saline-alkaline (SA) stress resistance of rice. In this study, OsLOL5 (GenBank No. AJ620677), containing two LSD1-like-type C2C2 domains, was isolated and analyzed its protection roles in transgenic plants and yeast. OsLOL5 was located in the nucleus as evidenced by the bombardment of onion epidermal cells. Results OsLOL5 expression significantly increased in rice leaves and roots under 150 mmol L-1 NaCl, 30 mM NaHCO3, and 10 mmol L-1 H2O2 treatment, respectively. Overexpression of OsLOL5 in yeast resulted in SA tolerance at significant level. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing OsLOL5 grew well in the presence ofboth NaCl and NaHCO3 treatments, whereas wild-type plants exhibited chlorosis, stunted growth phenotype, and even death. SA stress caused significant changes in the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in non-transgenic plants compared with those in transgenic lines. Transgenic rice overexpressing OsLOL5 exhibited stronger resistance than NT under NaHCO3 treatment, as demonstrated by its greater shoot length, and fresh weight. The genes associated with oxidative stress, such as OsAPX2, OsCAT, OsCu/Zn-SOD, and OsRGRC2, were significantly upregulated in OsLOL5-overexpressing rice. The results suggested that OsLOL5 improved SA tolerance in plants, and regulated oxidative and salinity stress retardation via the active oxygen detoxification pathway. Conclusions The yeast INVScI bacterium grew significantly better than the control strain under NaCl, NaHCO3, and H2O2 treatments. These findings illustrated that OsLOL5 overexpression enhanced yeast resistance for SA stress through active oxygen species. The present study showed that the OsLOL5 genes involved in the ROS signaling pathways may combine with the model plant Arabidopsis and rice in LDS1-type ZFP by ROS signaling pathways that regulate cell necrosis. We speculated that the OsLOL5 active oxygen scavenging system may have coordinating roles. The present study further revealed that OsLOL5 ZFP could regulate oxidative stress function, but could also provide a basis for salt-resistant rice strains. Abstract
N-Doped carbon materials are promising candidates as alternative catalysts to noble metals in promoting the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. However, methods to further reduce the ORR overpotential and improve related kinetics remain to be developed. This study reports that N-doped graphene frameworks (NGFs) synthesized from the rapid pyrolysis of solid glycine particles in the presence of sodium carbonate, display an extremely large specific surface area (1760 m(2) g(-1)) and a graphitic-N-dominant C-N configuration. The NGFs can efficiently catalyze the electrochemical reduction of molecular oxygen into water following a 4e pathway, with a low overpotential (0.98 V of onset potential vs. RHE), very high kinetic limiting current density (16.06 mA cm(-2)), and turnover frequency (121 s(-1)), much better than the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract
The valence-band offset (VBO) of the La(0.67)Sr(0.33)MnO(3)/NiO (LSMO/NiO), LaMnO(3)/NiO (LMO/NiO), LSMO/LaNiO(3) (LSMO/LNO) and LMO/LaNiO(3) (LSMO/LNO) heterostructures has been investigated using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The VBO values are calculated to be -0.72, -0.05, +1.43 and +1.51 eV for the LSMO/NiO, LSMO/LNO, LMO/LNO and LMO/NiO heterostructures, respectively. Hence, when compared with NiO and LNO, the valence band of LSMO is shifted to a lower binding energy, whereas that of LMO is shifted to a higher binding energy. In addition, the charge transfer at the interfaces has been depicted as Mn(3.3+) + 0.7e→ Mn(2.6+), Mn(3.3+) + 0.1e→ Mn(3.2+), Mn(3.0+)- 0.4e→ Mn(3.4+) and Mn(3.0+)- 0.5e→ Mn(3.5+) for the LSMO/NiO, LSMO/LNO, LMO/LNO and LMO/NiO heterostructures, respectively. Thus, the charge transfer procedure can be described as electron hopping from NiO and LNO to LSMO in the LSMO/NiO and LSMO/LNO heterostructures, and electron hopping from LMO to NiO and LNO in the LMO/NiO and LSMO/LNO heterostructures. Therefore, the charge transfer is dependent on the VBO, and the charge transfer direction can be determined from the negative or positive values of the VBO.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify and construct a human natural phage single-chain antibody (scFv) library of human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) using phage display technology. Total RNA was extracted from lymphatic tissue near an ATC and used to amplify variable heavy chain (VH) and variable light chain (VL) fragments with added linker sequences using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). After purification, the VH and VL amplicons were used to produce scFv fragments with added SfiI and NotI restriction enzyme recognition sites using splicing-overlap-extension PCR. Following digestion, the scFv gene was cloned in the pCANTAB-5E plasmid, and the recombinant phagemids were transformed into the susceptible Escherichia coli TG1 strain. After infection by the helper phage M13K07, a human ATC phage antibody library was successfully constructed. Clear 28 S and 18 S bands could be seen in the total RNA from the library, and the sizes of the VH, VL, and scFv genes contained therein were approximately 370, 350, and 750 bp, respectively. In addition, the conversion efficiency as measured by the pUC19 standard plasmid was 10(8) CFU/μg, and the positive insert ratio was 86.4% (19/22). These results demonstrated the successful construction of a human ATC scFv antibody gene library, and might provide the experimental basis for the further screening and identification of a phage single-chain antibody with ATC cell-specificity.

Abstract
Density modulation experiments have been conducted on Joint-TEXT (J-TEXT) Tokamak Ohmic discharge to investigate particle transport based on a model with constant diffusion plus inward convection. Like the HCN interferometer, the newly developed three-wave polarimeter-interferometer system (POLARIS) is used to measure the perturbed density. The comparison of results between the HCN interferometer and POLARIS is given. The consistent results indicate the validity of the analysis scheme. At lower densities, the typical particle confinement time τp is found to increase with electron density, while it saturates at higher densities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically investigate the effect of CT localizer radiograph acquisition on the tube current modulation and thus radiation dose of the subsequent diagnostic scan. METHODS Localizer radiographs of an abdominal section CT phantom were taken, and the resulting volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) for the diagnostic scan was recorded. Variables included tube potential, the phantom's alignment within the CT scanner gantry in both the vertical and horizontal directions and the X-ray source angle at which the localizer was acquired. RESULTS Diagnostic scan CTDIvol decreased with increasing tube potential. Vertical (table height) movement was found to affect radiation dose more than horizontal movement, with ±50 mm table movement resulting in a standard deviation in the diagnostic scan CTDIvol of 4.4 mGy, compared with 2.5 mGy with ±50 mm horizontal movement. Correspondingly, localizer angles of 90° or 270° (3 o'clock and 9 o'clock X-ray source positions) were less sensitive overall to alignment errors, with a standard deviation of 2.5 mGy, compared with a 0° or 180° angle, which had a standard deviation of 3.8 mGy. CONCLUSION To achieve a consistently optimized radiation dose, the localizer protocol should be paired with the diagnostic acquisition protocol. A final acquisition angle of 90° should be used when possible to minimize dose variation resulting from alignment errors. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE Localizer parameters that affect radiation output were identified for this scanner system. The importance of tube potential and acquisition angle was highlighted.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We investigated if the serum cytokeratin 19 fragment 21.1 (CYFRA21-1) level was elevated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and can function as a biomarker for detection and monitoring of NPC. Three hundred and one study subjects were divided into two groups: the NPC group (n=126) and healthy control group (n=175). Serum CYFRA21-1 levels were measured before and after treatment using a chemiluminescent immunoassay, and its association with tumor stage and the clinical objective responses were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to discriminate patients with NPC from the healthy controls. The pretreatment serum CYFRA21-1 level was significantly elevated in patients with NPC compared with the healthy controls (5.07±1.98 ng/ml vs 2.36±1.21 ng/ml, p<0.001), and it declined significantly after the entire treatment (2.14±0.72 ng/ml, p<0.001). The serum CYFRA21-1 level of patients with a classification of T3-4 was significantly higher than that of those with class T1-2 (5.64±2.23 ng/ml vs 4.62±1.64 ng/ml, p=0.006), and that of patients with clinical stage III-IV was higher than clinical stage I-II (5.31±2.02 vs 4.04±1.37 ng/ml, p=0.003). The AUC, sensitivity and specificity of elevated serum CYFRA21-1 in patients with NPC was 0.91, 0.83 and 0.89 respectively. In conclusion, the serum CYFRA21-1 level could be a reliable and effective biomarker for the detection and monitoring of NPC tumor progression. Abstract
Evidence has shown that miR-146a is involved in carcinogenesis and a common G/C variant (rs2910164) in the pre-miR-146a gene has been found to be associated with various cancers. We investigated the potential prognostic role of miR-146a polymorphism in prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy. Seventy-two southern Chinese with prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy were included in this study. miR-146a polymorphism was analyzed by PCR-RFLP. Its prognostic role in biochemical recurrence was assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression model. We did not find a significant association between miR-146a polymorphism and prostrate-specific antigen failure in the Chinese population [HR (95%CI): 0.83 (0.30-2.32) for CC vs GG/GC]. However, high Gleason score (over 8) was associated with increased biochemical recurrence and poorer PSA-free survival. This study was limited by the length of follow-up. Future studies with longer follow-up would allow evaluation of more direct metrics, such as disease-specific survival, metastasis-free survival, and overall survival.

Abstract
The old diagnostic neutral beam injector first operated at the University of Texas at Austin is ready for rejoining the joint Texas experimental tokamak (J-TEXT). A new set of high voltage power supplies has been equipped and there is no limitation for beam modulation or beam pulse duration henceforth. Based on the spectra of fully striped impurity ions induced by the diagnostic beam the design work for toroidal charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) system is presented. The 529 nm carbon VI (n = 8 - 7 transition) line seems to be the best choice for ion temperature and plasma rotation measurements and the considered hardware is listed. The design work of the toroidal CXRS system is guided by essential simulation of expected spectral results under the J-TEXT tokamak operation conditions.

Abstract
An upgrade of the edge rotation diagnostic system is achieved by increasing the number of viewing channels to 17 on J-TEXT tokamak. With the upgrade, the spatial resolution reaches 1 cm. The bulk plasma is used as the calibration light source. And the toroidal velocity profile of C V (carbon V) at edge region is obtained by using a spatial deconvolution technique. The valid measurement region is at ρ = 0.6-0.9, corresponding to the emitting region of C V. The preliminary experimental results express that the velocity of plasma may have a zero point near ρ = 0.85.

Abstract
A high-performance Faraday-effect polarimeter-interferometer system has been developed for the J-TEXT tokamak. This system has time response up to 1 μs, phase resolution < 0.1° and minimum spatial resolution ∼15 mm. High resolution permits investigation of fast equilibrium dynamics as well as magnetic and density perturbations associated with intrinsic Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic (MHD) instabilities and external coil-induced Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMP). The 3-wave technique, in which the line-integrated Faraday angle and electron density are measured simultaneously by three laser beams with specific polarizations and frequency offsets, is used. In order to achieve optimum resolution, three frequency-stabilized HCOOH lasers (694 GHz, >35 mW per cavity) and sensitive Planar Schottky Diode mixers are used, providing stable intermediate-frequency signals (0.5-3 MHz) with S/N > 50. The collinear R- and L-wave probe beams, which propagate through the plasma poloidal cross section (a = 0.25-0.27 m) vertically, are expanded using parabolic mirrors to cover the entire plasma column. Sources of systematic errors, e.g., stemming from mechanical vibration, beam non-collinearity, and beam polarization distortion are individually examined and minimized to ensure measurement accuracy. Simultaneous density and Faraday measurements have been successfully achieved for 14 chords. Based on measurements, temporal evolution of safety factor profile, current density profile, and electron density profile are resolved. Core magnetic and density perturbations associated with MHD tearing instabilities are clearly detected. Effects of non-axisymmetric 3D RMP in ohmically heated plasmas are directly observed by polarimetry for the first time.

Abstract
Sports-related concussion is a major public health issue; however, little is known about the underlying changes in functional brain networks in adolescents following injury. Our aim was to use the tools from graph theory to evaluate the changes in brain network properties following concussion in adolescent athletes. We recorded resting state electroencephalography (EEG) in 33 healthy adolescent athletes and 9 adolescent athletes with a clinical diagnosis of subacute concussion. Graph theory analysis was applied to these data to evaluate changes in brain networks. Global and local metrics of the structural properties of the graph were calculated for each group and correlated with Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) scores. Brain networks of both groups showed small-world topology with no statistically significant differences in the global metrics; however, significant differences were found in the local metrics. Specifically, in the concussed group, we noted: 1) increased values of betweenness and degree in frontal electrode sites corresponding to the (R) dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the (R) inferior frontal gyrus and 2) decreased values of degree in the region corresponding to the (R) frontopolar prefrontal cortex. In addition, there was significant negative correlation between degree and hub value, with total symptom score at the electrode site corresponding to the (R) prefrontal cortex. This preliminary report in adolescent athletes shows for the first time that resting-state EEG combined with graph theoretical analysis may provide an objective method of evaluating changes in brain networks following concussion. This approach may be useful in identifying individuals at risk for future injury.

Abstract
Evaluation and reconstruction of plasma equilibrium, especially to resolve the safety factor profile, is imperative for advanced tokamak operation and physics study. Based on core magnetic measurement by the high resolution laser polarimeter-interferometer system (POLARIS), the equilibrium of Joint-TEXT (J-TEXT) plasma is reconstructed and profiles of safety factor, current density, and electron density are, therefore, obtained with high accuracy and temporal resolution. The equilibrium reconstruction procedure determines the equilibrium flux surfaces essentially from the data of POLARIS. Refraction of laser probe beam, a major error source of the reconstruction, has been considered and corrected, which leads to improvement of accuracy more than 10%. The error of reconstruction has been systematically assessed with consideration of realistic diagnostic performance and scrape-off layer region of plasma, and its accuracy has been verified. Fast equilibrium transitions both within a single sawtooth cycle and during the penetration of resonant magnetic perturbation have been investigated.

Abstract
Most forecasts predict an annual airline traffic growth rate between 4.5 and 5% in the foreseeable future. To sustain that growth, the environmental impact of aircraft cannot be ignored. Future aircraft must have much better fuel economy, dramatically less greenhouse gas emissions and noise, in addition to better performance. Many technical breakthroughs must take place to achieve the aggressive environmental goals set up by governments in North America and Europe. One of these breakthroughs will be physics-based, highly accurate and efficient computational fluid dynamics and aeroacoustics tools capable of predicting complex flows over the entire flight envelope and through an aircraft engine, and computing aircraft noise. Some of these flows are dominated by unsteady vortices of disparate scales, often highly turbulent, and they call for higher-order methods. As these tools will be integral components of a multi-disciplinary optimization environment, they must be efficient to impact design. Ultimately, the accuracy, efficiency, robustness, scalability and geometric flexibility will determine which methods will be adopted in the design process. This article explores these aspects and identifies pacing items.
