Abstract
The ancient silk road of China passed through Xinjiang and facilitated gene exchanges from the East and the West which impacted on the genetic variation and structure of the nomadic Kazakh population residing there. In order to understand the nature of this genetic variation; 151 Xinjiang Kazakh samples were obtained from four main Kazakh groups and were analyzed using mtDNA and Y-chromosome markers. The Xinjiang Kazakh population is heterogeneous, showing the coexistence of matrilineal lineages with different origins. No genetic differentiation of mtDNA is observed among the four different regional Xinjiang Kazakh populations in Xinjiang by AMOVA and Networks. The genetic diversity of Y-STR loci is higher in Xinjiang Kazakhs (0.968 ± 0.014) than the Kazakhs from Kazakhstan (0.629 ± 0.071) and Russia (0.835 ± 0.020). East Eurasians make a more than 50% contribution to the maternal and paternal lineages of Xinjiang Kazakhs. There is more gene flow from West Eurasian into the maternal lineages of Xinjiang Kazakh than to the Kazakhs from Russia and Kazakhstan. Moreover, mtDNA and Y-STR displayed high polymorphism in Xinjiang Kazakhs (the haplotype diversity and power of discrimination were 0.990 ± 0.003, 0.9137 for mtDNA HVS and 0.968 ± 0.014, 0.9489 for Y-STR system, respectively), suggesting they would be very useful and important markers for forensic analysis and population genetic studies.

Abstract
Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has been developed as a minimally invasive endoscopic treatment for achalasia for years. However, the optimal length of submucosal tunnel and myotomy of muscle bundles during procedure of POEM has not yet been determined, so we aim to assess safety and efficacy of modified POEM with shorter myotomy of muscle bundles in achalasia patients. Consecutive achalasia patients had been performed modified POEM with shorter myotomy, and assessed by symptoms, high-resolution manometry, and barium swallow examinations before and 3 months after POEM for safety and efficacy evaluation. Modified POEM with shorter submucosal tunnel (mean length 6.8 cm) and endoscopic myotomy of muscle bundles (total mean length 5.4 cm) were completed in 46 consecutive achalasia patients. During the 3-month follow up in all cases, significant improvement of symptoms (a significant drop in the Eckardt score 8.4 ± 3.2 vs. 2.7 ± 1.9; P < 0.001), decreased lower esophageal sphincter pressure (39.4 ± 10.1 vs. 24.4 ± 9.1 mmHg; P < 0.001) and integrated relaxation pressure (38.6 ± 10.4 vs. 25.7 ± 9.6 mmHg; P < 0.01), and a drop in height of esophagus barium-contrast column (5.4 ± 3.1 vs. 2.6 ± 1.8 cm; P < 0.001) were observed. The frequencies of adverse events were lower in those under endotracheal anesthesia and CO2 insufflations compared with intravenous anesthesia and air insufflations. Only three patients were found to have gastroesophageal reflux disease on follow up. Modified POEM with shorter myotomy under endotracheal anesthesia and CO2 insufflations shows its good safety and excellent short-term efficacy in the treatment of achalasia. But further studies are warranted to assess the long-term efficacy.

Abstract
Hyperandrogenemia is associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome raising the possibility that androgen receptor signaling pathway plays an important role in the development and progression of β-cell dysfunction. Testosterone is the major circulating androgen in women. In this study, we investigated the effect of testosterone on INS-1 cells to find whether excess androgen could produce endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress thereby contributing to β-cell dysfunction. The role of testosterone in INS-1 cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry and electron microscopy. Expression of BIP, ATF4, and CHOP were assessed by RT-PCR and Western blot. Testosterone/AR could not only initiate cell apoptosis but also induce the activation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha (eIF2α) cascades in INS-1 cells. Treatment of ER stress inhibitor or flutamide (AR inhibitor) could inhibit testosterone-induced cell apoptosis and CHOP expression. These results suggest that testosterone/AR pathway caused INS-1 cell apoptosis was at least in part through eIF2α/CHOP cascades.

Abstract
Aerosol oligonucleotide therapy has vast potential in pulmonary system diseases. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in complex physiological processes such as cell signaling, apoptosis, etc. Therefore, to determine the mechanism of ROS involvement in polyethylenimine/oligonucleotide (PEI/ON) endocytosis in cells, we measured the fluorescence intensities of fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled ON complexes with PEI and the changes in cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)]c) in A549 cells after hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) stimulation. Results showed that improved uptake of PEI/ON complexes was independent of the rise of [Ca(2+)]c in A549 cells, including the Ca(2+) inflow and the release of Ca(2+) from intracellular stores induced by 500 μM H2O2. However, the enhanced uptake efficiency was almost completely abolished by the calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) inhibitor and the microtube depolymerized drug. CaMKII-dependent microtube polymerization may be responsible for the enhanced uptake of PEI/ON complexes in A549 cells under oxidative stress conditions. This study is useful for research aimed at improving aerosol oligonucleotide therapy in pulmonary system diseases.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of taurine on inflammatory cytokine expression, on astrocyte activity and cerebral edema and functional outcomes, following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats. 72 rats were randomly divided into sham, TBI and Taurine groups. Rats subjected to moderate lateral fluid percussion injury were injected intravenously with taurine (200mg/kg) or saline immediately after injury or daily for 7days. Functional outcome was evaluated using Modified Neurological Severity Score (mNSS). Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) of the brain was measured using immunofluorescence. Concentration of 23 cytokines and chemokines in the injured cortex at 1 and 7days after TBI was assessed by Luminex xMAP technology. The results showed that taurine significantly improved functional recovery except 1day, reduced accumulation of GFAP and water content in the penumbral region at 7days after TBI. Compared with the TBI group, taurine significantly suppressed growth-related oncogene (GRO/KC) and interleukin (IL)-1β levels while elevating the levels of regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES) at 1day. And taurine markedly decreased the level of 17 cytokine: eotaxin, Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-17, leptin, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and only increased the level of MIP-1α in a week. The results suggest that taurine effectively mitigates the severity of brain damage in TBI by attenuating the increase of astrocyte activity and edema as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of our study was to assess the performance of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging to differentiate benign from malignant thyroid nodules. METHODS 182 patients who needed thyroid surgery were examined. All patients and 50 healthy volunteers underwent ARFI sonoelastography, which quantitatively analysed the elasticity and hardness of the nodule's centre and periphery. RESULTS ARFI values showed a statistical significance between malignant nodules and benign nodules and common thyroid parenchyma, in both the centre and periphery of nodules (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference between benign nodules and common thyroid parenchyma in either the nodule's centre or periphery (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between the nodule's centre and periphery of the elastic parameters in both the benign and malignant nodules. There was a statistically significant difference among the two areas (the central group and the peripheral group) under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and the optimal model was the peripheral group. For differentiation of malignant from benign nodules, the sensitivity and specificity were 96.3% and 96.2%, respectively, when 2.545 m s(-1) was chosen as a cut-off value in the peripheral group. CONCLUSION ARFI imaging may be helpful to differentiate benign nodules from malignant thyroid nodules. The selecting measurement position is important in ARFI imaging, and it has good diagnostic value in clinical applications. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE This study shows the diagnostic contribution of ARFI imaging in thyroid lesions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study explored the impact of gestational weight gain on postnatal pelvic muscle strength and the effect of low-frequency electrical stimulation combined with biofeedback training on strength recovery. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 126 mothers six to eight weeks after term delivery were recruited at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital from August 2010 to July 2011. According to gestational weight gain, they were divided into two groups: the < 15 kg (A) and > or = 15 kg (B) groups. Pelvic floor muscle fibre strength was determined. Target low-frequency electrical stimulation combined with biofeedback training was conducted. After training, pelvic floor muscle fiber strength was determined again for effect evaluation. RESULTS Before training, types I and II pelvic floor muscle fiber strength of group B was noticeably lower than that of group A (p < 0.05). After rehabilitation, the pelvic floor muscle strength of both groups significantly increased (p < 0.05). However, types I and II pelvic floor muscle fiber strength of group B was still significantly lower than that of group A (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Gestational weight gain negatively influences pelvic floor muscles. Low-frequency electrical stimulation combined with biofeedback training improves postnatal pelvic floor muscle fiber strength. A less gestational weight increase indicates faster postnatal pelvic muscle strength recovery and a better rehabilitative effect.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Molecularly targeted drugs specific for mutated genes are increasingly the focus of novel clinical trials. However, molecular profiling of tumors is largely unavailable in community cancer centers, where nearly 80% of cancer patients (pts) are treated. In October 2012, Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI) launched a community-based molecular profiling initiative to characterize the spectrum of molecular alterations in tumors. The profiling panel focused on potentially actionable mutations for the purpose of identifying candidates for treatment with specific targeted agents (FDA approved or investigational). Herein, we report the initial data from breast cancers (BC) profiled between October 2012 and May 2013.
Methods: Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) pts > 18 years of age with ECOG PS ≤ 2 who were candidates for treatment provided consent for tumor molecular profiling. Archival tumor specimens (tissue block or 10 unstained slides) obtained from either the primary or metastatic disease were collected and interrogated by NGS (1000X average coverage) in a CLIA/CAP laboratory to detect oncogenic hotspot mutations in 35 cancer-related genes. Results were reported to the treating physician within 12 calendar days of receipt of suitable tissue and were stored in a database to enable correlation with clinical outcomes. Detection of relevant molecular abnormalities was used to identify pts appropriate for clinical trials of targeted agents.
Results: As of May 31 2013, a total of 594 tumor samples were profiled, 101 (17%) of which were BC samples. 8% (8/101) of the BC samples were inadequate for assay. Of the remaining 93 samples, 60 (65%) had no mutations detected. 28% of BC had single mutations and 7% had multiple mutations. PIK3CA mutations (24%) were the most frequently identified alteration. Other genetic alterations identified included RUNX1 (4%) and FGFR3 (2%) while mutations in PIK3R1, MET, KRAS, KIT, FGFR2, HER2, BRAF, SMO, MYC, DDR2 and AKT1 were infrequent, each identified in 1 pt. Patterns and frequency of mutations in the 35 genes assayed differed in the various subtypes of BC. 6% (6/93) of BC pts with appropriate tumor mutations identified by molecular profiling have been enrolled into phase I clinical trials with PI3K or mTORC1/2 inhibitors; updated treatment results will be presented. An additional 27 patients are potentially eligible for ongoing trials at SCRI.
Conclusions: This community-based molecular profiling initiative has been well accepted by patients and physicians, and provides timely results. Potentially actionable mutations were identified in 35% of BCs tested; PIK3CA mutations accounted for 70% of all actionable mutations detected. Identification of BC patients with actionable mutations may add to treatment options and improve results, and will also accelerate development of new targeted agents.

Abstract
Primary adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) of the esophagus is a rare kind of malignancy characterized by mixed glandular and squamous differentiation as well as a propensity for aggressive clinical behavior. Data on the evaluation of the clinicopathological features and the prognosis of patients suffering from this malignancy are few because of the rarity of this disease. We conducted a retrospective review of 24 patients with primary esophageal ASC among 6546 esophageal cancer patients who underwent transthoracic esophagectomy in our hospital. The clinicopathological presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognostic factors of the patients were respectively investigated. The Kaplan-Meier method and the log rank test were used to calculate and compare overall survival (OS). The Cox proportional hazards model was employed to identify independent prognostic factors. There were 18 males and 6 females with a median age of 60 years (range: 40-78 years). The clinical symptoms, macroscopic type, as well as the radiological and endoscopic features of esophageal ASC were similar to those of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Sixteen (88.9%) of the 18 cases who underwent preoperative esophagoscopic biopsy were misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. The overall median follow-up period was 36 months, and the median survival time was 32 months. The 1, 3, 5-year OS rates were 75.0%, 48.5%, and 19.4%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that gender (P=0.047), lymph node metastasis (P=0.007), and TNM stage (P=0.037) were important factors associated with OS of the 22 patients who underwent radical resection. Multivariate analysis showed that the pathological N stage was the only independent prognostic factor (P=0.031, hazard ratio [HR], 5.369, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.167-24.700). These results suggest that esophageal ASC is an uncommon disease prone to be misdiagnosed by endoscopic biopsy. Surgical resection is the primary treatment, but the prognosis of ASC is usually poorer than conventional squamous cell carcinoma. Lymph node metastasis is an independent prognostic factor after radical resection.

Abstract
Reciprocal relationship usually exists between osteoblastogenesis and adipogenesis, with factors stimulating one of these processes at the same time inhibiting the other. In the present study, miR-30e was found to be involved in the reciprocal regulation of osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation. Our data indicated that miR-30e was induced in primarily cultured mouse bone marrow stromal cell, mesenchymal cell line C3H10T1/2 and preadipocyte 3T3-L1 after adipogenic treatment. Conversely, it was reduced in mouse stromal line ST2 and preosteoblast MC3T3-E1 after osteogenic treatment. Enforced expression of miR-30e in 3T3-L1 significantly suppressed the growth of the cells and induced the preadipocytes to differentiate into mature adipocytes, along with increased expression of adipocyte-specific transcription factors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-α (C/EBPα) and C/EBPβ, and the marker gene aP2. In contrast, inhibition of the endogenous miR-30e enhanced the cell growth and repressed preadipocytes to differentiate. Conversely, supplementing miR-30e activity blocked, whereas knocking down miR-30e enforced the preosteoblast MC3T3-E1 to fully differentiate. Furthermore, miR-30e overexpression stimulated adipocyte formation and inhibited osteoblast differentiation from marrow stromal cells. Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6), one of the critical coreceptor for Wnts, was shown to be a direct target of miR-30e by using the luciferase assay. Knockdown of LRP6 in 3T3-L1 cells downregulated β-catenin/T-cell factor (TCF) transcriptional activity and dramatically potentiated the differentiation of the cells into mature adipocytes. Taken together, the present work suggests that the expression of miR-30e is indispensable for maintaining the balance of adipocytes and osteoblasts by targeting the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the displacements of the lumpectomy cavity delineated by the surgical clips and the seroma based on four-dimensional CT (4D-CT) for external-beam partial breast irradiation (EB-PBI) after breast-conserving surgery (BCS). METHODS 14 breast cancer patients after BCS were recruited for EB-PBI and undertook 4D-CT simulation. On the 10 sets of the 4D-CT images, all the surgical clips in the cavity were delineated. The gross tumour volume (GTV) formed by the clips, the seroma, and both the clips and the seroma were defined as GTVc, GTVs and GTVc+s, respectively. The displacements of the centre of mass (COM) of the clips, GTVc, GTVs, GTVc+s and the selected clips in the three-dimensional (3D) directions were recorded and compared. RESULTS In the left-right, anterior-posterior and superior-inferior directions, the displacements were 2.20, 1.80 and 2.70 mm for the clip COM; 0.90, 1.05 and 1.20 mm for GTVc; 0.80, 1.05 and 0.80 mm for GTVs; and 0.90, 1.20 and 1.40 mm for GTVc+s, respectively. In the 3D directions, the displacements of the clip COM were greater than the GTVc, GTVs, GTVc+s, and the displacements of the clip COM, GTVc+s, GTVc and GTVs were significantly greater than the displacements of the selected clips (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The displacements of the clip COM were greater than that of the GTVc, GTVs, GTVc+s and the four selected clips. The optimal internal target volume should be defined based on the boundary displacements. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE When the GTV was delineated using the clips and/or the seroma, there was displacement difference between the lumpectomy cavity centre and the boundary for the EB-PBI. The optimal internal target volume should be defined based on the boundary displacements of the lumpectomy cavity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sirolimus-based regimens have recently been introduced as nephron-sparing strategies to avoid the calcineurin inhibitors-induced nephrotoxicity. METHODS To investigate the different effects of these 2 immunosuppressants on CD4(+)CD25(hi)FoxP3(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs) and the newly defined subsets of FoxP3(+) T cells, including CD45RA(-)FoxP3(lo) cytokine-secreting T cells (csT cells), CD45RA(-)FoxP3(hi) activated Treg (aTregs), and CD45RA(+)FoxP3(+) resting Treg (rTregs), 52 cases of renal transplant recipients who have received a maintenance immunosuppressive regimen comprised either cyclosporine (n = 34) or sirolimus (n = 18) were collected and proportion of Tregs and each subset of FoxP3(+) T cells in peripheral blood was detected by flowcytometry. RESULTS Sirolimus significantly prompted the proportion of Tregs (5.92 ± 0.40 vs 2.19 ± 0.18; P < .001) and both of the CD45RA-negative subsets, including csT cells (4.92 ± 0.50 vs 1.83 ± 0.18; P < .001) and aTregs (1.04 ± 0.15 vs 0.23 ± 0.05; P < .05) when compared with cyclosporine. However, the rTregs were not remarkably affected (0.36 ± 0.09 vs 0.79 ± 0.28; P = .063). CONCLUSION Sirolimus plays its immune regulatory role in renal transplantation partly by increasing the proportion of Tregs. However, the increasing of both pro- and anti-inflammatory subsets of FoxP3(+) T cells also indicates the potential compromising of the effects of sirolimus on immune regulation.

Abstract
Abscisic acid (ABA)-, stress-, and ripening-induced (ASR) proteins are reported to be involved in abiotic stresses. However, it is not known whether ASR genes confer drought stress tolerance by utilizing the antioxidant system. In this study, a wheat ASR gene, TaASR1, was cloned and characterized. TaASR1 transcripts increased after treatments with PEG6000, ABA and H(2)O(2). Overexpression of TaASR1 in tobacco resulted in increased drought/osmotic tolerance, which was demonstrated that transgenic lines had lesser malondialdehyde (MDA), ion leakage (IL) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), but higher relative water content (RWC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities than wild type (WT) under drought stress. Overexpression of TaASR1 in tobacco also enhanced the expression of ROS-related and stress-responsive genes under osmotic stress. In addition, transgenic lines exhibited improved tolerance to oxidative stress by retaining more effective antioxidant system. Finally, TaASR1 was localized in the cell nucleus and functioned as a transcriptional activator. Taken together, our results showed that TaASR1 functions as a positive factor under drought/osmotic stress, involved in the regulation of ROS homeostasis by activating antioxidant system and transcription of stress-associated genes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soluble fibrinogen-like protein 2 (sfgl2), which is mainly secreted by T cells, is a novel effector of regulatory T cells with immunosuppressive functions. The aim of this study was to investigate serum levels of sfgl2 among renal allograft recipients. METHODS From November 2010 to August 2011 we retrospectively divided 47 renal allograft recipients into an acute rejection (n = 19) versus a stable group (n = 28) according to allograft biopsy results, using the Banff 2007 classification. The acute rejection group was subdivided into grade I (n = 8) versus grade II T-cell-mediated (n = 6) or antibody-mediated rejection episodes (n = 5). Peripheral blood samples were collected at the time of biopsy. Fourteen healthy volunteers were included as normal group controls. Serum levels of sfgl2 were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Serum levels of sfgl2 were increased among renal allograft recipients suffering from biopsy-proven acute rejection episodes (61.91 ± 45.68 ng/mL), versus those with stable allografts (38.59 ± 19.92 ng/mL, P < .05) or healthy volunteers (29.10 ± 18.08 ng/mL, P < .05). The sfgl2 level was significantly higher among patients with antibody-mediated (118.48 ± 55.54 ng/mL) than T-cell-mediated acute rejection episodes (41.71 ± 16.44 ng/mL, P < .01). Serum sfgl2 levels were remarkably elevated in patients with grade II (51.87 ± 19.13 ng/mL) versus grade I T-cell-mediated rejection (34.10 ± 9.26 ng/mL, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Serum sfgl2 levels were increased among renal allograft recipients with acute rejection episodes to an extent dependent upon the pathological type and severity of the response.

Abstract
Aquaporin (AQP) proteins have been shown to transport water and other small molecules through biological membranes, which is crucial for plants to combat stress caused by drought. However, the precise role of AQPs in drought stress response is not completely understood in plants. In this study, a PIP2 subgroup gene AQP, designated as TaAQP7, was cloned and characterized from wheat. Expression of TaAQP7-GFP fusion protein revealed its localization in the plasma membrane. TaAQP7 exhibited high water channel activity in Xenopus laevis oocytes and TaAQP7 transcript was induced by dehydration, and treatments with polyethylene glycol (PEG), abscisic acid (ABA) and H(2)O(2). Further, TaAQP7 was upregulated after PEG treatment and was blocked by inhibitors of ABA biosynthesis, implying that ABA signaling was involved in the upregulation of TaAQP7 after PEG treatment. Overexpression of TaAQP7 increased drought tolerance in tobacco. The transgenic tobacco lines had lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and H(2)O(2), and less ion leakage (IL), but higher relative water content (RWC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities when compared with the wild type (WT) under drought stress. Taken together, our results show that TaAQP7 confers drought stress tolerance in transgenic tobacco by increasing the ability to retain water, reduce ROS accumulation and membrane damage, and enhance the activities of antioxidants.

The roots of transgenic plants also retained a high K(+)/Na(+) ratio and Ca(2+) content, but reduced H(2)O(2) accumulation by an enhancement of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) activities under salt stress. Further investigation showed that whole seedlings from transgenic lines displayed higher SOD, CAT and POD activities, increased NtSOD and NtCAT transcript levels, and decreased H(2)O(2) accumulation and membrane injury under salt stress. Taken together, our results demonstrate that TaAQP8 confers salt stress tolerance not only by retaining high a K(+)/Na(+) ratio and Ca(2+) content, but also by reducing H(2)O(2) accumulation and membrane damage by enhancing the antioxidant system.

The roots of transgenic plants also retained a high K(+)/Na(+) ratio and Ca(2+) content, but reduced H(2)O(2) accumulation by an enhancement of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) activities under salt stress. Further investigation showed that whole seedlings from transgenic lines displayed higher SOD, CAT and POD activities, increased NtSOD and NtCAT transcript levels, and decreased H(2)O(2) accumulation and membrane injury under salt stress. Taken together, our results demonstrate that TaAQP8 confers salt stress tolerance not only by retaining high a K(+)/Na(+) ratio and Ca(2+) content, but also by reducing H(2)O(2) accumulation and membrane damage by enhancing the antioxidant system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between recurrent major depression (MD) in women and suicidality is complex. We investigated the extent to which patients who suffered with various forms of suicidal symptomatology can be distinguished from those subjects without such symptoms. METHOD We examined the clinical features of the worst episode in 1970 Han Chinese women with recurrent DSM-IV MD between the ages of 30 and 60 years from across China. Student's t tests, and logistic and multiple logistic regression models were used to determine the association between suicidality and other clinical features of MD. RESULTS Suicidal symptomatology is significantly associated with a more severe form of MD, as indexed by both the number of episodes and number of MD symptoms. Patients reporting suicidal thoughts, plans or attempts experienced a significantly greater number of stressful life events. The depressive symptom most strongly associated with lifetime suicide attempt was feelings of worthlessness (odds ratio 4.25, 95% confidence interval 2.9-6.3). Excessive guilt, diminished concentration and impaired decision-making were also significantly associated with a suicide attempt. CONCLUSIONS This study contributes to the existing literature on risk factors for suicidal symptomatology in depressed women. Identifying specific depressive symptoms and co-morbid psychiatric disorders may help improve the clinical assessment of suicide risk in depressed patients. These findings could be helpful in identifying those who need more intense treatment strategies in order to prevent suicide.

Abstract
Recent calculations suggest that the rate of neutron capture by (130)Sn has a significant impact on late-time nucleosynthesis in the r process. Direct capture into low-lying bound states is expected to be significant in neutron capture near the N=82 closed shell, so r-process reaction rates may be strongly impacted by the properties of neutron single particle states in this region. In order to investigate these properties, the (d,p) reaction has been studied in inverse kinematics using a 630 MeV beam of (130)Sn (4.8 MeV/u) and a (CD(2))(n) target. An array of Si strip detectors, including the Silicon Detector Array and an early implementation of the Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array, was used to detect reaction products. Results for the (130)Sn(d, p)(131)Sn reaction are found to be very similar to those from the previously reported (132)Sn(d, p)(133)Sn reaction. Direct-semidirect (n,γ) cross section calculations, based for the first time on experimental data, are presented. The uncertainties in these cross sections are thus reduced by orders of magnitude from previous estimates.

Abstract
MAPK cascades are universal signal transduction modules and play important roles in plant growth, development and in response to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses. Although MAPKs and MAPKKs have been systematically investigated in several plant species including Arabidopsis, rice and poplar, no systematic analysis has been conducted in the emerging monocot model plant Brachypodium distachyon. In the present study, a total of 16 MAPK genes and 12 MAPKK genes were identified from B. distachyon. An analysis of the genomic evolution showed that both tandem and segment duplications contributed significantly to the expansion of MAPK and MAPKK families. Evolutionary relationships within subfamilies were supported by exon-intron organizations and the architectures of conserved protein motifs. Synteny analysis between B. distachyon and the other two plant species of rice and Arabidopsis showed that only one homolog of B. distachyon MAPKs was found in the corresponding syntenic blocks of Arabidopsis, while 13 homologs of B. distachyon MAPKs and MAPKKs were found in that of rice, which was consistent with the speciation process of the three species. In addition, several interactive protein pairs between the two families in B. distachyon were found through yeast two hybrid assay, whereas their orthologs of a pair in Arabidopsis and other plant species were not found to interact with each other. Finally, expression studies of closely related family members among B. distachyon, Arabidopsis and rice showed that even recently duplicated representatives may fulfill different functions and be involved in different signal pathways. Taken together, our data would provide a foundation for evolutionary and functional characterization of MAPK and MAPKK gene families in B. distachyon and other plant species to unravel their biological roles.

Abstract
In April 2011, a survey of diseases was conducted on strawberry plants grown in greenhouses in the town of Xingshou, Changping District, Beijing, China. A tan-brown leaf spot with the presence of pink spore masses was observed on older leaves of strawberry plants. In general, the leaf spots began as small, round, water-soaked lesions in the middle or on the margin of leaves, which enlarged gradually up to 1 to 3 cm in diameter and were circular or irregular and brown to dark brown. Occasionally, the center of some spots cracked in the middle lesion under dry conditions. Eventually, black sporodochia were produced on the upper surface of spots and exuded pink conidial masses under humid conditions. Fungal structures were taken directly from the diseased leaves and examined microscopically for morphological characteristics. Sporodochia, 172 to 451 × 138 to 343 μm, were dark and suborbicular. Conidiophores, 8.4 to 48.3 × 0.8 to 2.1 μm, were hyaline, unicellular, and cylindrical. Conidia, 3.1 to 10.2 × 1.5 to 3.0 μm, were hyaline, aseptate, and canoe-shaped to allantoid, forming singly. For further study, the fungus was isolated in pure culture on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium from symptomatic leaf tissue. In culture, the mycelium was white at first and then changed to brownish. The sporodochia were light colored at first and turned brownish or almost black in older cultures. To identify the fungus, the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA region of the isolate was amplified by PCR with primers ITS1 (5'-TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG-3') and ITS4 (5'-TCCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC-3') and sequenced. The 462-nt sequence (GenBank Accession No. JQ995228) was identical to that of Pilidium concavum (1). To validate Koch's postulates, pathogenicity was tested by inoculating 20 leaves on 10 healthy strawberry plants with a mycelial plug from a 15-day-old colony (0.5 cm in diameter). Controls were treated with plugs of PDA medium. The inoculated and control plants were then maintained in growth chambers at 25°C (12 h of light per day, 80% humidity). After 12 days, 100% of the inoculated leaves showed symptoms identical to those observed on leaves in the field while the control leaves remained healthy. The original fungus was reisolated from inoculated leaves showing the symptoms. Thus, it was concluded that the fungus was the causal organism of the leaf spot. On the basis of morphological characteristics, molecular features, and pathogenicity tests, the pathogen of tan-brown leaf spot on strawberry was identified as P. concavum. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. concavum causing tan-brown leaf spot on strawberry in China. This fungus was reported to cause leaf spot on Paeonia suffruticosa in China (2). AbstractInterfacial microstructure of In/Pd ohmic contacts to n-GaAs was studied by various X-ray diffraction techniques and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Analysis of this interface after various annealing showed that In1-xGaxAs compounds are formed at the interface and the composition of these compounds depends upon the annealing temperature. As the temperature increases, the stoichiometry of the Inrich compounds tends toward higher concentrations of Ga. The low contact resistance is achieved by dividing the Schottky barrier between metal and GaAs into two barriers due to metal/Inl-xGaxAs and In1-xGaxAs/GaAs. The barrier due to In1-xGaxAs/GaAs is believed to be the main limiting factor in lowering of contact resistance. The observed ohmic behavior for sample annealed at 500°C for 20 s is attributed to the further reduction of this barrier.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the preventive effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists on remifentanil-induced increase in postoperative pain and analgesic requirement in patients. METHODS Pubmed, EMBase, Springer and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register were searched to identify all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published to November 2010 which investigated the preventive effects of NMDA receptor antagonists on remifentanil-induced postoperative hyperalgesia and/or tolerance. The studies listed at the end of these articles as reference were also searched. Two authors independently assessed the quality of each study met the inclusion criteria and extracted data. Then Meta-analysis was perfomed using RevMan 5.0 software. The outcomes analyzed were the postoperative analgesic consumption, pain intensity scores, time to first analgesic request, and the incidence of adverse effects. RESULTS A total of 623 patients (223 in the ketamine group, 87 in the magnesium group and 313 in the control group) from 14 prospective RCTs were included in the Meta-analysis. Administration of NMDA receptor antagonists reduced the pain scores at 4 hr after operation (P<0.05), and the standardized mean differences (SMD) was -0.21 (95% confidence interval was -0.41 to -0.01). There were no significant differences in postoperative analgesic consumption, pain scores at other time points, time to first analgesic request and the incidence of adverse effects (P>0.05). Further subgroup analyses based on the type of intervention showed that the results were almost the same. CONCLUSION These data do not support the use of NMDA receptor antagonists, ketamine and magnesium sulfate to prevent the development of remifentanil-induced postoperative hyperalgesia and tolerance.
