Stability and Bionomic Analysis of Fuzzy Prey-Predator Harvesting Model in Presence of Toxicity: A Dynamic Approach

This paper deals with a prey-predator model in which both the species are infected by some toxicants which are released by some other species or source with fuzzy biological parameters. The application of fuzzy differential equation in the modeling of prey-predator populations with the effect of toxicants is presented. The dynamical behavior and harvesting of the fuzzy exploited system are studied by using the utility function method. Sufficient conditions for the local stability of the positive equilibrium are obtained by analyzing the characteristic equation. Furthermore, the possibility of the existence of bionomic equilibrium is studied under imprecise biological parameters. The study of the presence of toxic substance and harvesting in the modeling system can have significant impact on the existence of both the species, which is in line with reality. Numerical simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical analysis.

Efficient harvesting of wet blue-green microalgal biomass by two-aminoclay [AC]-mixture systems

Blue-green microalgal blooms have been caused concerns about environmental problems and human-health dangers. For removal of such cyanobacteria, many mechanical and chemical treatments have been trialled. Among various technologies, the flocculation-based harvesting (precipitation) method can be an alternative if the problem of the low yield of recovered biomass at low concentrations of cyanobacteria is solved. In the present study, it was utilized mixtures of magnesium aminoclay [MgAC] and cerium aminoclay [CeAC] with different particle sizes to harvest cyanobacteria feedstocks with ∼100% efficiency within 1h by ten-fold lower loading of ACs compared with single treatments of [MgAC] or [CeAC]. This success was owed to the compact networks of the different-sized-ACs mixture for efficient bridging between microalgal cells. In order to determine the usage potential of biomass harvested with AC, the mass was heat treated under the reduction condition. This system is expected to be profitably utilizable in adsorbents and catalysts.

Biomass production and identification of suitable harvesting technique for Chlorella sp. MJ 11/11 and Synechocystis PCC 6803

Microalgae that can grow fast and convert solar energy into chemical energy efficiently are being considered as a promising feedstock of renewable biofuel. Mass production of microalgal oil faces a number of technical barriers that make the current production of biodiesel economically unfeasible. Small size (≈1-20 μm) and negatively charged surface of the microalgal cells pose difficulties in the process of harvesting. This leads to significant increase in the overall cost of biomass production. The present study explored different methods and conditions for harvesting of Chlorella sp. MJ 11/11 and Synechocystis PCC 6803. A customized air-lift reactor was used for the cultivation of biomass under photoautotrophic condition. Significant improvement in the rate of productivity of biomass was observed. Maximum biomass productivity of 0.25, 0.14 g L^-1 d^-1 for Chlorella sp. MJ 11/11 and Synechocystis PCC 6803, respectively, were obtained. Various flocculation techniques viz. auto-flocculation, inorganic, chitosan and electrolytic flocculation were used for the recovery of biomass. Among all the techniques, electro-flocculation showed high flocculation efficiency (98 %) and floatation of floc causing easy harvesting. Moreover, low-cost and easy control of the process justify electro-flocculation as a most suitable and promising technique for the recovery of microalgal cells.

Understanding the salinity effect on cationic polymers in inducing flocculation of the microalga Neochloris oleoabundans

A mechanistic study was performed to evaluate the effect of salinity on cationic polymeric flocculants, that are used for the harvesting of microalgae. The polyacrylamide Synthofloc 5080H and the polysaccharide Chitosan were employed for the flocculation of Neochloris oleoabundans. In seawater conditions, a maximum biomass recovery of 66% was obtained with a dosage of 90mg/L Chitosan. This recovery was approximately 25% lower compared to Synthofloc 5080H reaching recoveries greater than 90% with dosages of 30mg/L. Although different recoveries were obtained with both flocculants, the polymers exhibit a similar apparent polymer length, as was evaluated from viscosity measurements. While both flocculants exhibit similar polymer lengths in increasing salinity, the zeta potential differs. This indicates that polymeric charge dominates flocculation. With increased salinity, the effectivity of cationic polymeric flocculants decreases due to a reduction in cationic charge. This mechanism was confirmed through a SEM analysis and additional experiments using flocculants with various charge densities.

Clear regression of harvested intertidal mollusks. A 20-year (1994-2014) comparative study

Intertidal mollusks are subjected to an intense environmental pressure, from human-induced stressors, mainly harvesting, to competition for food and space with other species. Here we used mollusk shell size as a measure of size distribution and reproductive potential of intertidal limpets. Two species of exploited limpets (Patella candei crenata and Patella aspera) were monitored throughout the littoral of Tenerife (Canary Islands, NE Atlantic Ocean), an overpopulated island with a high coastal pressure. The exploitation of these two limpet species is controlled by regional legislation, with seasonal closures and limits of harvest for professional (10 kg) and recreational harvesters (3-5 kg). A long-term comparison (1994-2014) of limpet size has been conducted as a surrogate of the state of conservation of these two limpets. Both species showed populations dominated largely by small-sized individuals (<30 mm) and a lack of large adults (>60 mm). The proximity to coastal settlements was not a factor to explain limpet assemblage structure. The temporal (1994-2014) comparative study showed a sharp decrease in the mean size of both limpet species (7 mm in P. aspera and 5 mm in P. candei crenata). These results might be indicative of overharvesting of both species in Tenerife. The conservation of the two studied species needs to be accomplished by the strict fulfillment of current protective strategies, as well as the creation of marine protected areas where intertidal harvesting is totally banned all over the year.

Peptide-mediated microalgae harvesting method for efficient biofuel production

BACKGROUND

Production of biofuels from microalgae has been recognized to be a promising route for a sustainable energy supply. However, the microalgae harvesting process is a bottleneck for industrialization because it is energy intensive. Thus, by displaying interactive protein factors on the cell wall, oleaginous microalgae can acquire the auto- and controllable-flocculation function, yielding smarter and energy-efficient harvesting.

RESULTS

Towards this goal, we established a cell-surface display system using the oleaginous diatom Fistulifera solaris JPCC DA0580. Putative cell wall proteins, termed frustulins, were identified from the genome information using a homology search. A selected frustulin was subsequently fused with green fluorescent protein (GFP) and a diatom cell-surface display was successfully demonstrated. The antibody-binding assay further confirmed that the displayed GFP could interact with the antibody at the outermost surface of the cells. Moreover, a cell harvesting experiment was carried out using silica-affinity peptide-displaying diatom cells and silica particles where engineered cells attached to the silica particles resulting in immediate sedimentation.

CONCLUSION

This is the first report to demonstrate the engineered peptide-mediated harvesting of oleaginous microalgae using a cell-surface display system. Flocculation efficiency based on the silica-affinity peptide-mediated cell harvesting method demonstrated a comparable performance to other flocculation strategies which use either harsh pH conditions or expensive chemical/biological flocculation agents. We propose that our peptide-mediated cell harvest method will be useful for the efficient biofuel production in the future.

Inhibition of alkaline flocculation by algal organic matter for Chlorella vulgaris

Alkaline flocculation is a promising strategy for the concentration of microalgae for bulk biomass production. However, previous studies have shown that biological changes during the cultivation negatively affect flocculation efficiency. The influence of changes in cell properties and in the quality and composition of algal organic matter (AOM) were studied using Chlorella vulgaris as a model species. In batch cultivation, flocculation was increasingly inhibited over time and mainly influenced by changes in medium composition, rather than biological changes at the cell surface. Total carbohydrate content of the organic matter fraction sized bigger than 3 kDa increased over time and this fraction was shown to be mainly responsible for the inhibition of alkaline flocculation. The monosaccharide identification of this fraction mainly showed the presence of neutral and anionic monosaccharides. The addition of 30-50 mg L(-1) alginic acid, as a model for anionic carbohydrate polymers containing uronic acids, resulted in a complete inhibition of flocculation. These results suggest that inhibition of alkaline flocculation was caused by interaction of anionic polysaccharides leading to an increased flocculant demand over time.

Removing the bottlenecks of cell culture metabolomics: fast normalization procedure, correlation of metabolites to cell number, and impact of the cell harvesting method

INTRODUCTION

Although cultured cells are nowadays regularly analyzed by metabolomics technologies, some issues in study setup and data processing are still not resolved to complete satisfaction: a suitable harvesting method for adherent cells, a fast and robust method for data normalization, and the proof that metabolite levels can be normalized to cell number.

OBJECTIVES

We intended to develop a fast method for normalization of cell culture metabolomics samples, to analyze how metabolite levels correlate with cell numbers, and to elucidate the impact of the kind of harvesting on measured metabolite profiles.

METHODS

We cultured four different human cell lines and used them to develop a fluorescence-based method for DNA quantification. Further, we assessed the correlation between metabolite levels and cell numbers and focused on the impact of the harvesting method (scraping or trypsinization) on the metabolite profile.

RESULTS

We developed a fast, sensitive and robust fluorescence-based method for DNA quantification showing excellent linear correlation between fluorescence intensities and cell numbers for all cell lines. Furthermore, 82-97 % of the measured intracellular metabolites displayed linear correlation between metabolite concentrations and cell numbers. We observed differences in amino acids, biogenic amines, and lipid levels between trypsinized and scraped cells.

CONCLUSION

We offer a fast, robust, and validated normalization method for cell culture metabolomics samples and demonstrate the eligibility of the normalization of metabolomics data to the cell number. We show a cell line and metabolite-specific impact of the harvesting method on metabolite concentrations.

Nutrient removal, microalgal biomass growth, harvesting and lipid yield in response to centrate wastewater loadings

The effects of wastewater, with four different nutrient loadings, from synthetic centrate on biomass production, nutrient removal, microalgal settling, and lipid production were investigated in photobioreactors under both batch and, subsequently, semi-continuous operations. At higher centrate concentration factors (17.2% and 36.2%), hydraulic retention time and pH adjustments could be employed to sustain acceptable microalgal growth rates and wastewater treatment. Similar nutrient removals efficiencies (>95%) and biomass production (0.42-0.51 g/L) were observed for the four centrate concentrations. Both the lipid productivity and lipid content decreased with increasing nutrient loading in the wastewater. The results also demonstrated that the mass ratio of carbohydrate to protein could provide a good indication of microalgal settling performance, rather than sole component composition or total extracellular polymeric substances. The highest settling efficiency (42.3 ± 0.04% after 24 h) and lowest lipid content (10.2 ± 1.6%) were observed for the lowest mass ratio of carbohydrate to protein (0.74 ± 0.15) noted in the microalgae cultivated in the wastewater with the highest centrate concentration factor (36.2%).

Dosage effect of cationic polymers on the flocculation efficiency of the marine microalga Neochloris oleoabundans

A mechanistic mathematical model was developed to predict the performance of cationic polymers for flocculating salt water cultivated microalgae. The model was validated on experiments carried out with Neochloris oleoabundans and three different commercial flocculants (Zetag 7557®, Synthofloc 5080H® and SNF H536®). For a wide range of biomass concentrations (0.49-1.37 g L(-1)) and flocculant dosages (0-150 mg L(-1)) the model simulations predicted well the optimal flocculant-to-biomass ratio between 43 and 109 mgflocculant/gbiomass. At optimum conditions biomass recoveries varied between 88% and 99%. The cost of the usage of commercial available flocculants is estimated to range between 0.15$/kgbiomass and 0.49$/kgbiomass.

Urban wastewater treatment by seven species of microalgae and an algal bloom: Biomass production, N and P removal kinetics and harvestability

This study evaluates the capacity of seven species and a Bloom of microalgae to grow in urban wastewater. Nutrient removal kinetics and biomass harvesting by means of centrifugation and coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation have been also tested. Results show that the best biomass productivities ranged from between 118 and 108 mgSS L(-1) d(-1) for the Bloom (Bl) and Scenedesmus obliquus (Sco). Regarding nutrient removal, microalgae were able to remove the total dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations by more than 80% and 87% respectively, depending on the species tested. The final total dissolved concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in the culture media complies with the European Commission Directive 98/15/CE on urban wastewater treatment. Regarding harvesting, the results of coagulation-flocculation sedimentation using a 60 mg L(-1) dose of Ferric chloride were similar between species, exceeding the biomass removal efficiency by more than 90%. The results of centrifugation (time required to remove 90% of solids at 1000 rpm) were not similar between species, with the shortest time being 2.9 min for Sco, followed by the bloom (7.25 min). An overall analysis suggested that the natural bloom and Scenedesmus obliquus seem to be the best candidates to grow in pre-treated wastewater, according to their biomass production, nutrient removal capability and harvestability.

Harvesting of microalgae cell using oxidized dye wastewater

In this study, oxidized dye wastewaters were tested for their potential to be used as a cheap coagulant for microalgae harvesting. Two dyes (methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO)) were selected as model dyes, and the Fenton-like reaction under high temperature (90 °C, 1 min) employed as an oxidative treatment option. A maximum harvesting efficiency over 90% was obtained with both MB and MO at a dilution ratio of 5:1 (dye wastewater: cell culture), when the optimal oxidation condition was 20 mg/L of dye, 1 mM of FeCl3, and 0.5% of H2O2 concentration. This phenomenon could be explained by the possibility that amine groups are formed and exposed in oxidized dyes, which act as a kind of amine-based coagulant just like chitosan. This study clearly showed that dye wastewater, when properly oxidized, could serve as a potent coagulant for microalgae harvesting, potentially rendering the harvesting cost reduced to a substantial degree.

Bio-harvesting and pyrolysis of the microalgae Botryococcus braunii

The microalgae Botryococcus braunii is widely recognized as a potentially important biofuel-feedstock whose commercial exploitation is limited by difficulties with its cultivation and harvesting. In this study, two B. braunii strains, Kossou-4 and Overjuyo-3 were successfully cultured at a 500 l-scale for 60-days. Harvesting by bio-flocculation with Aspergillus fumigatus at an optimum ratio of 1:40 of fungus to microalgal culture resulted in up to 98% recovery of biomass in the two strains. Ultimate analysis (C, N, H, S, ash, high heating value) and pyrolysis (analytical and preparative pyrolysis and GC-MS assays) showed that co-harvesting with fungi did not cause any impairment of the feedstock value of the microalgal biomass. This work represents the first report on the successful culturing and harvesting of these strains at a 500 l-scale using bio-flocculation. The use of A. fumigatus represents an efficient and economical method for the harvest of B. braunii for biofuel production.

An integrated process for microalgae harvesting and cell disruption by the use of ferric ions

In this study, a simultaneous process of harvesting biomass and extracting crude bio-oil was attempted from wet microalgae biomass using FeCl3 and Fe2(SO4)3 as both coagulant and cell-disrupting agent. A culture solution of Chlorella sp. KR-1 was firstly concentrated to 20 g/L and then proceeded for cell disruption with the addition of H2O2. Optimal dosage were 560 and 1060 mg/L for FeCl3 and Fe2(SO4)3, showing harvesting efficiencies of more than 99%. Optimal extraction conditions were identified via the response surface method (RSM), and the extraction yield was almost the same at 120 °C for both iron salts but FAME compositions after transesterification was found to be quite different. Given iron salts were a reference coagulant in water treatment in general and microalgae harvesting in particular, the present approach of using it for harvesting and oil-extraction in a simultaneous manner can serve as a practical route for the microalgae-derived biodiesel production.

Cultivating and harvesting of marine alga Nannochloropsis oculata in local municipal wastewater for biodiesel

The feasibility of using the mixture of seawater and municipal wastewater; (1) the wastewater before activated sludge tank, just after primary settling (BAS) and (2) the wastewater after activated sludge tank, just before addition of polymer flocculants (AAS); as culture medium for the cultivation of marine microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata was investigated. 10% BAS, 20% BAS and 10% AAS, 20% AAS, 50% AAS, 70% AAS, 100% AAS effluent loadings were well adapted to used wastewater. Sufficient dry weights obtained (345-406 mg L(-1)) with growth rates 0.37-0.45 for aerated cultures. High TN and TP removals (∼74-90%) were achieved. Harvesting technique for grown cultures was also studied with natural sedimentation and pH induced flocculation. By alkalinity induced flocculation, at pH values of 10.50, high recovery of the cells (∼80%) achieved with high sedimentation rates in 10 min. The flocculation efficiencies decreased, sedimentation rates increased with the increase of the cell concentration.

Influence of starch on microalgal biomass recovery, settleability and biogas production

In the context of wastewater treatment with microalgae cultures, coagulation-flocculation followed by sedimentation is one of the suitable options for microalgae harvesting. This process is enabled by the addition of chemicals (e.g. iron). However, in a biorefinery perspective, it is important to avoid possible contamination of downstream products caused by chemicals addition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of potato starch as flocculant for microalgal biomass coagulation-flocculation and sedimentation. The optimal flocculant dose (25mg/L) was determined with jar tests. Such a concentration led to more than 95% biomass recovery (turbidity<9NTU). The settleability of flocs was studied using an elutriation apparatus measuring the settling velocities distribution. This test underlined the positive effect of starch on the biomass settling velocity, increasing to >70% the percentage of particles with settling velocities >6.5m/h. Finally, biochemical methane potential tests showed that starch biodegradation increased the biogas production from harvested biomass.

Harvesting of Chlorella sorokiniana by co-culture with the filamentous fungus Isaria fumosorosea: A potential sustainable feedstock for hydrothermal gasification

Despite recent advances in down-stream processing, production of microalgae remains substantially limited because of economical reasons. Harvesting and dewatering are the most energy-intensive processing steps in their production and contribute 20-30% of total operational cost. Bio-flocculation of microalgae by co-cultivation with filamentous fungi relies on the development of large structures that facilitate cost effective harvesting. A yet unknown filamentous fungus was isolated as a contaminant from a microalgal culture and identified as Isaria fumosorosea. Blastospores production was optimized in minimal medium and the development of pellets, possibly lichens, was followed when co-cultured with Chlorella sorokiniana under strict autotrophic conditions. Stable pellets (1-2mm) formed rapidly at pH 7-8, clearing the medium of free algal cells. Biomass was harvested with large inexpensive filters, generating wet slurry suitable for hydrothermal gasification. Nutrient rich brine from the aqueous phase of hydrothermal gasification supported growth of the fungus and may increase the process sustainability.

Recent nanoparticle engineering advances in microalgal cultivation and harvesting processes of biodiesel production: a review

Among the various steps entailed in the production of biodiesel from microalgae, the efficiency and cost-reduction of the cultivation and harvesting steps remain key obstacles to its practical commercialization. Recently, in order to overcome the technical bottlenecks and limitations with regard to both steps, nanoparticle engineering based on particles' unique physico-chemical and mechanical properties has been extensively applied as a powerful analytical and practical tool. These applications include the enhancement of cell growth and/or pigments by light back-scattering, the induction of intracellular lipid accumulation by nutritional competition and/or stress environment, the improvement of cell separation efficiency and processing time from culture broth, the multiple reuse of magnetic nanoparticle flocculant, and integrated one-pot harvesting/cell-disruption. This review presents and discusses the recent nanoparticle-engineering-based developments in the implementation of practical microalgal cultivation and harvesting processes.

Ferric chloride based downstream process for microalgae based biodiesel production

In this study, ferric chloride (FeCl3) was used to integrate downstream processes (harvesting, lipid extraction, and esterification). At concentration of 200 mg/L and at pH 3, FeCl3 exhibited an expected degree of coagulation and an increase in cell density of ten times (170 mg/10 mL). An iron-mediated oxidation reaction, Fenton-like reaction, was used to extract lipid from the harvested biomass, and efficiency of 80% was obtained with 0.5% H2O2 at 90 °C. The iron compound was also employed in the esterification step, and converted free fatty acids to fatty acid methyl esters under acidic conditions; thus, the fatal problem of saponification during esterification with alkaline catalysts was avoided, and esterification efficiency over 90% was obtained. This study clearly showed that FeCl3 in the harvesting process is beneficial in all downstream steps and have a potential to greatly reduce the production cost of microalgae-originated biodiesel.

Harvesting carbohydrate-rich Arthrospira platensis by spontaneous settling

The filamentous cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis is an attractive feedstock for carbohydrate-based biofuels because it accumulated up to 74% of carbohydrates when nitrogen stressed. Nitrogen stressed A. platensis also settled spontaneously, and this occurred simultaneously with carbohydrates accumulation, suggesting a link between both phenomena. The increased settling velocity was neither due to production of extracellular carbohydrates, nor due to degradation of gas vacuoles, but was caused by an increase in the specific density of the filaments as a result of accumulation of carbohydrates under the form of glycogen. Settling velocities of carbohydrate-rich A. platensis reached 0.64mh(-1), which allowed the biomass to be harvested using a lamella separator. The biomass could be concentrated at least 15 times, allowing removal of 94% of the water using gravity settling, thus offering a potential application as a low-cost and high-throughput method for primary dewatering of carbohydrate-rich A. platensis.

The effect of bubble size on the efficiency and economics of harvesting microalgae by foam flotation

The effect of bubble size and rise velocity on the efficiency of a foam flotation microalgae harvesting unit was determined. Three sparger and input airflow combinations were used: (1) limewood sparger with constant airflow, (2) ceramic flat plate sparger with constant airflow and (3) ceramic flat plate sparger with an oscillating airflow. The ceramic sparger with oscillating flow generated the smallest bubbles within the liquid pool and the largest bubbles within the foam phase. This delivered the highest levels of biomass recovery due to enhanced bubble-algae collision and attachment efficiencies. The smaller bubbles generated by the ceramic sparger under constant or oscillating airflow had significantly faster rise velocities when compared to the larger bubbles produced by the limewood spargers. The faster velocities of the smaller bubbles were due to momentum transfer to the liquid phase. Analyses of the harvest economics revealed that the ceramic flat plate sparger with an oscillating airflow delivered the best overall cost-benefit relationship.

Cationic polymers for successful flocculation of marine microalgae

Flocculation of microalgae is a promising technique to reduce the costs and energy required for harvesting microalgae. Harvesting marine microalgae requires suitable flocculants to induce the flocculation under marine conditions. This study demonstrates that cationic polymeric flocculants can be used to harvest marine microalgae. Different organic flocculants were tested to flocculate Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Neochloris oleoabundans grown under marine conditions. Addition of 10 ppm of the commercial available flocculants Zetag 7557 and Synthofloc 5080H to P. tricornutum showed a recovery of, respectively, 98% ± 2.0 and 94% ± 2.9 after flocculation followed by 2h sedimentation. Using the same flocculants and dosage for harvesting N. oleoabundans resulted in a recovery of 52% ± 1.5 and 36% ± 11.3. This study shows that cationic polymeric flocculants are a viable option to pre-concentrate marine cultivated microalgae via flocculation prior to further dewatering.

Microalgae harvesting by flotation using natural saponin and chitosan

This study aims to investigate the harvesting of microalgae by dispersed air flotation (DiAF) using natural biosurfactant saponin as the collector and chitosan as the flocculant. Two types of microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus, were used in this study. It was observed that saponin was a good frother, but not an effective collector when used alone for flotation separation of algae. However, with the pre-flocculation of 5 mg/L of chitosan, separation efficiency of >93% microalgae cells was found at 20 mg/L of saponin. Removal efficiency of >54.4% and >73.0% was found for polysaccharide and protein, respectively at 20 mg/L of saponin and chitosan each. Experimental results show that DiAF using saponin and chitosan is effective for separation of microalgae, and algogenic organic matter (AOM). It can potentially be applied in the integrated microalgae-based biorefinery.

Levels and determinants of pesticide exposure in re-entry workers in vineyards: results of the PESTEXPO study

Physical contact with branches, leaves, fruit or vegetables in previously treated crops is responsible for the transfer of pesticides to the worker's skin in agricultural tasks such as harvesting, pruning, thinning, cutting or sorting. Few studies have documented workers' exposure during re-entry in vineyards. In the PESTEXPO study, we described levels of exposure and analyzed their determinants during re-entry and harvesting in vineyards in the Bordeaux area, France. Between 2002 and 2007, volunteers performing re-entry tasks (N=46 days) or harvesting (N=48 days) after dithiocarbamate or folpet treatment were observed. Detailed information on the tasks was collected and dermal contamination was assessed using patches placed on the skin and hand-washing at the end of each working phase. Daily median contamination was 1 967.7 μl of mixture during re-entry (90(e) percentile: 5 045.3 μl) and 18.7 μl during harvesting (90(e) percentile: 911.4 μl). The type of task was the parameter found to be the most strongly associated with contamination. For re-entry, the highest contaminations were observed during raising of wires and cutting of branches. During the harvest, the contamination was maximal for grape-picking. The delay since the last treatment and the rate of active ingredient per hectare played a role, together with other factors such as meteorological factors, crop and farm characteristics, gloves and clothes. Our results underline the necessity to take into account exposures during re-entry and harvest when considering pesticide exposure, both for epidemiological research and preventive action.

Biorefinery concept in a microalgae pilot plant. Culturing, dynamic filtration and steam explosion fractionation

A 53 m(3) microalgae pilot plant with semi-closed photobioreactors has been operated in batch mode at Tarragona, where proper climatic conditions exist. Operations carried-out were microalgae culturing, concentration, cell disruption and lipid extraction. Culturing was performed with and without CO2 fertilization. pH was used to control CO2 dosing. With CO2 fertilization best microalgae concentrations were obtained. Productivities up to 19.9 g/m(2)/day were reached. Although sedimentation and centrifugation was performed, studies focused on dynamic membrane filtration as improved technique compared with conventional one. Significant fouling reduction was obtained by using a vibrational membrane setup. Cell disruption including product pre-extraction was performed by using steam explosion at moderate conditions, as novel technique for this application. Lipid extraction was performed by using conventional techniques with and without exploded material. The amount of lipids obtained from exploded material was higher than with non-exploded material, which shows that steam explosion provides a clear enhancement.
