Abstract
We describe the first reported electro-optic cutoff modulator that utilizes a thermally annealed single-mode proton-exchanged channel waveguide in a X-cut Y-propagating LiNbO(3) substrate. The large changes in extraordinary refractive index obtainable by the proton-exchange process enabled us readily to form single-mode waveguides with a channel width as small as 2 microm. As a result, the voltage required for electro-optically controlled propagation cutoff was significantly reduced. Thermal annealing was used to provide fine tuning on the refractive-index changes that was in turn used to bring the waveguide to the very edge of cutoff and thus permitted further reduction in the voltage requirement. Thermal annealing was also found greatly to improve the linearity of modulation. For example, we have measured a modulation depth of 97% at a total voltage swing of only 7 V and a high linearity. In addition, no optical damage has been observed after a 2-h continuous exposure of 632.8-nm He-Ne laser light at an intensity as high as 10(4) W/cm(2).

Abstract
Rhodamine-6G(R6G), a lipophilic dye which degrades mammalian mitochondria, was shown to arrest the division of Nicotiana protoplasts. When albino recipient-protoplasts were treated with R6G and fused with X-irradiated (green) donor- protoplasts, only green cybrid plants were obtained. The mtDNA of the cybrids was analyzed by Southern-blot hybridization. We found that cybrids which resulted from N. rustica (donor) protoplasts, fused with R6G-treated albino protoplasts, had only parental-type mtDNA. When another donor, with N. undulata mtDNA, was used, most of the resulting cybrids contained non-parental mtDNA. Only one cybrid (out of 12) had N. undulata -type (donor) mtDNA.

Abstract
Standard alpha-subunit dissociated from glycoprotein hormones differs from individual (free) alpha-subunit found in sera or in cell culture media; secreted free alpha-subunit is larger, more acidic and lacks the ability of recombining in vitro with standard hCG-beta. It is unclear whether the large free alpha-subunit is only a secretory product or whether it is also present in tissue. Herein were studied the molecular size, the isoelectric pH, and the recombining activity of free alpha-subunit obtained from pituitary and placenta extracts. Sephadex exclusion chromatography showed the presence of both a large and a small form, and a changing large/small free alpha-subunit ratio in the various extracts. Most of the large form obtained from placenta extracts electrofocused into two peaks of pI 4.8 and 5.1. The large form showed no recombining activity with standard hCG-beta while the small free alpha-subunit recombined as well as did standard hCG-alpha. The observation of three common characteristics (a larger size, a pI 4.8, and a lack of recombining activity) suggests a similarity between the large secreted form and a fraction of the free alpha-subunit in tissue.

Abstract
The synthesis of and guinea pig contragestational screening data for several oxepane and 3,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane analogues of zoapatanol (1) are described and their structure-activity relationships discussed. Conversion of the 5-keto group on the nonenyl side chain of 1 into a hydroxyl function enhanced the potency. Further significant enhancement in the potency was realized with the transformation of several oxepanes into the 3,8-dioxabicyclo-[3.2.1]octane-1-acetic acid derivatives. Detailed, comparative contragestational evaluation of the three most potent compounds 9, 33, and 37 is presented, which led to the selection of 33 (ORF 13811) for further biological evaluation.

Abstract
The rate-limiting step in many solid-phase immunoassays is associated with the slow kinetics of binding of macro-molecular antigen and conjugate to the immobilized phase. We demonstrate that the use of ultrasonic energy to enhance mass transport across liquid/solid interfaces can dramatically accelerate antigen binding to immobilized antibodies. We use an ultrasound-accelerated procedure with an enzyme-channelling test strip containing glucose oxidase and specific antibody to the alpha-subunit of human choriogonadotropin (HCG) co-immobilized onto a cellulose support. A horseradish peroxidase conjugate of monospecific antibody to the beta-subunit of HCG is used in the liquid phase to complete the immune "sandwich." Use of ultrasound to accelerate binding and of enzyme channelling to eliminate wash steps result in a simple two-incubation protocol by which 25 int. units of urinary HCG per liter can be detected visually in less than 20 min of assay time.

Abstract
The DiGeorge syndrome is a rare congenital abnormality of absent of hypoplastic thymus and parathyroid glands. Thirty neonates who had cardiac lesions and the DiGeorge syndrome are reviewed. The early mortality for 10 neonates undergoing palliative procedures was 80%. Seventy-five percent of the deaths were secondary to sepsis. Twenty neonates did not undergo palliative procedures. In this group, early mortality was 60% and late mortality was 65%. Sixty percent of the deaths in this group were associated with sepsis, with cardiac failure responsible for the remaining deaths. Survival in both groups has improved with appropriate treatment of the immunological and metabolic consequences of the DiGeorge syndrome.

Abstract
Three techniques for disease time-space clustering analysis, those of Knox, Mantel and Ederer-Myers-Mantel, were applied to simulated data so as to study their sensitivities. The simulated data corresponded to three alternative non-null models for the distribution, transmission and development of Hodgkin's disease (HD) which were formulated in accordance with the results of published studies. The results indicate that the three techniques may not be sufficiently sensitive to the clustering in a real data set of HD cases. Therefore, the inconclusive results obtained to date with regard to clustering of HD may be related to the low power of the statistical techniques employed.

Abstract
Thirty-one patients 16 to 40 years of age (mean +/- SD = 30.7 +/- 7 years) had one or more episodes of sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF). Underlying cardiac abnormalities consisted most commonly of cardiomyopathy (nine), long QT syndrome (LQTS) (five), and mitral valve prolapse (five); no identifiable heart disease was found in four patients. Programmed ventricular stimulation induced VT in only one of four patients with the LQTS but induced VT in 64% of 22 patients with other abnormalities. Chronic drug treatment was based either on serial electropharmacologic testing or was empiric when electrophysiologic testing failed to provoke an arrhythmia. Using this approach, we found a 13% incidence of recurrent VT and a 10% mortality over a follow-up period of 18.1 +/- 13.9 months. In young adults with VT or VF, an underlying cardiac abnormality can usually be found. Extensive evaluation should be performed to uncover the underlying cardiac abnormality as this may influence chronic management.

Abstract
We examined effects on intestinal absorption of cholesterol and triglycerides and intestinal lipoprotein formation by feeding rats diets in which saturated fatty acids (palmitic plus stearic) comprised 78%, 68%, 48%, or 38% of triglyceride fatty acids. Absorption into lymph of radiolabeled cholesterol was proportional to triglyceride absorption. The rates of absorption of these lipids were related inversely to the % saturated fatty acids fed. The distribution of newly absorbed cholesterol and triglyceride into intestinal lipoproteins differed. With increasing cholesterol absorption more was recovered in very low density lipoproteins in contrast to the appearance preferentially in chylomicrons of larger quantities of fatty acid. Lymph lipid content did not reflect a consistent pattern in relation to the experimental diet fed. The fatty acid composition of triglyceride-rich lymph lipoproteins resembled the diet closely. One-quarter of the intestinal lymph particles from rats fed the highly saturated diets was flattened and polygonal as judged by electron microscopy if cooled to room temperature; whereas with the same diets, particles collected and isolated at 37 degrees C were round. Proportions of A-I and C apolipoproteins in triglyceride-rich intestinal particles varied inversely; apoA-I increased as fat/cholesterol absorption was greater. Diet-induced alterations in plasma lipoproteins and increased circulating triglycerides in this study in rats were unrelated to the variations in intestinal absorption or lymph lipoprotein formation.

Abstract
The disposition of radioactive phencyclidine (PCP) in various rat tissues, after single or repeated intramuscular injections for 23 days, have been investigated. Peak levels of radioactivity appeared 45-90 min after a single administration. The pancreas, salivary glands and mesenteric fat contained 4 to 6-fold higher radioactivity than brain, muscles, tendons, and bones. After repeated 3H-PCP injections, radioactivity levels showed a similar pattern as to that of the peak levels after a single administration, but at notably higher values. On the other hand, the percentage of depletion, within 48 h after the final injection, was the highest in the pancreas, salivary glands and mesenteric fat. It is possible that despite the low retention capacity of PCP radioactivity per unit weight of muscle, tendon and bone, they may be considered important reservoirs for either PCP, or its metabolites or both because of their large relative mass in the body.

Abstract
The complete amino acid sequence of glycoprotein gp71A of Friend murine leukemia virus (F-MuLV) is presented. The protein moiety of gp71A was digested with Staphylococcus aureus (SV8) protease, trypsin, and thermolysin. The sequences of the peptides were determined by the micro dansyl Edman procedure. gp71A is composed of 445 amino acid residues and contains eight oligosaccharide side chains, which are attached exclusively to asparagine by N-glycosyl bonds primarily in the COOH-terminal half of the polypeptide. gp71A is rich in proline (49 residues), tryptophan (16 residues), and cysteine (19 residues). Proline has the highest molar content (11%) of all amino acids. The prolines cluster in two segments. The most interesting one stretches between residue 233 and residue 283 and contains 18 prolines within 51 amino acids. This proline-rich domain most likely forms a flexible polyproline helix. The comparison of gp70 of Moloney murine leukemia virus (Mo-MuLV gp70) with F-MuLV gp71A revealed that 70 amino acids have been exchanged and 9 residues have been deleted from Mo-MuLV gp70. The most striking alterations have taken place within the large polyproline segment (residues 247 to 281). In this part of the molecule 7 amino acids have been deleted in Mo-MuLV and 18 residues have been replaced. This evidence supports the proposal of Shinnick et al. [Shinnick, T. M., Lerner, R. A. & Sutcliffe, J. G. (1981) Nature (London) 293, 543-548] that this area is a "hot spot" for recombination.

Abstract
In the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria hydrophilic pores exist, allowing the diffusion of various low-molecular-weight solutes. These pores are formed by proteins, the porins. In a preliminary communication [Chen, Krämer, Schmidmayr & Henning (1979) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 76, 5014-5017] we presented the primary structure of one of these porins, the 340-amino-acid-residue protein I (ompF protein) from Escherichia coli B/r. In the present paper we give the experimental evidence for this sequence. Two tryptophan positions, one valine position, two aspartic acid positions and nine out of 82 amide determinations have been corrected. To aid further studies on this class of transmembrane proteins, the isolation of most of the constituent peptides is documented.

Abstract
The glutaraldehyde-preserved stented porcine xenograft valve has been durable in adult patients with a low incidence of valve-related complications. In children, however, early degeneration and calcification of this valve is now being reported. The etiology of the early degeneration is still unclear but may be related to calcium metabolism, tissue fatigue, and host rejection. During the last 5 years at the Texas Heart Institute, 21 patients under 23 years of age underwent implantation of an apico-aortic conduit containing a porcine xenograft valve for treatment of severe forms of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Because of early failure, the valve was replaced in two patients (11.5%) within 3 years of implantation. Although early degeneration of the porcine valve might occur in some children, it may still be the preferred valve to use in young patients because anticoagulation is not required with its use.
