Perception of upper lip augmentation utilizing simulated photography

BACKGROUND

No head to head comparison is available between surgical lip lifting and upper lip filler injections to decide which technique yields the best results in patients. Despite the growing popularity of upper lip augmentation, its effect on societal perceptions of attractiveness, successfulness and overall health in woman is unknown.

METHODS

Blinded casual observers viewed three versions of independent images of 15 unique patient lower faces for a total of 45 images. Observers rated the attractiveness, perceived success, and perceived overall health for each patient image. Facial perception questions were answered on a visual analog scale from 0 to 100, where higher scores corresponded to more positive responses.

RESULTS

Two hundred and seventeen random observers with an average age of 47 years (standard deviation, 15.9) rated the images. The majority of observers were females (n=183, 84%) of white race (n=174, 80%) and had at least some college education (n=202, 93%). The marginal mean score for perceived attractiveness from the natural condition was 1.5 points (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.9-2.18) higher than perceived attractiveness from the simulated upper lip filler injection condition, and 2.6 points higher (95% CI, 1.95-3.24) than the simulated upper lip lift condition. There was a moderate to strong correlation between the scores of the same observer.

CONCLUSIONS

Simulated upper lip augmentation is amenable to social perception analysis. Scores of the same observer for attractiveness, successfulness, and overall health are strongly correlated. Overall, the natural condition had the highest scores in all categories, followed by simulated upper lip filler, and lastly simulated upper lip lift.

Survey data of household perceptions of drought, mitigation and adaptation practices in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

A comprehensive and detailed description of household survey data that were collected in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia in 2018 is provided in this article. The survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire administered among 300 households in East Nusa Tenggara as one of the regions experiencing severe drought for more than a decade. The information about perceptions of drought and mitigation and adaptation strategies was collected from the head of household or household member. The survey comprises comprehensive information about household socio-demographic characteristics, household resources, agricultural activities, knowledge and perceptions of drought, experience with drought and adaptation strategy, mitigation of the impact of drought, future drought and the participation of women in decision making. The data are provided with this article.

Truth is in the eye of the beholder: Perception of the Müller-Lyer illusion in dogs

Visual illusions are objects that are made up of elements that are arranged in such a way as to result in erroneous perception of the objects’ physical properties. Visual illusions are used to study visual perception in humans and nonhuman animals, since they provide insight into the psychological and cognitive processes underlying the perceptual system. In a set of three experiments, we examined whether dogs were able to learn a relational discrimination and to perceive the Müller-Lyer illusion. In Experiment 1, dogs were trained to discriminate line lengths using a two-alternative forced choice procedure on a touchscreen. Upon learning the discrimination, dogs’ generalization to novel exemplars and the threshold of their abilities were tested. In the second experiment, dogs were presented with the Müller-Lyer illusion as test trials, alongside additional test trials that controlled for overall stimulus size. Dogs appeared to perceive the illusion; however, control trials revealed that they were using global size to solve the task. Experiment 3 presented modified stimuli that have been known to enhance perception of the illusion in other species. However, the dogs’ performance remained the same. These findings reveal evidence of relational learning in dogs. However, their failure to perceive the illusion emphasizes the importance of using a full array of control trials when examining these paradigms, and it suggests that visual acuity may play a crucial role in this perceptual phenomenon.

MRI acoustic noise-modulated computer animations for patient distraction and entertainment with application in pediatric psychiatric patients

PURPOSE

To reduce patient anxiety caused by the MRI scanner acoustic noise.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We developed a simple and low-cost system for patient distraction using visual computer animations that were synchronized to the MRI scanner's acoustic noise during the MRI exam. The system was implemented on a 3T MRI system and tested in 28 pediatric patients with bipolar disorder. The patients were randomized to receive noise-synchronized animations in the form of abstract animations in addition to music (n = 13, F/M = 6/7, age = 10.9 ± 2.5 years) or, as a control, receive only music (n = 15, F/M = 7/8, age = 11.6 ± 2.3 years). After completion of the scans, all subjects answered a questionnaire about their scan experience and the perceived scan duration.

RESULTS

The scan duration with multisensory input (animations and music) was perceived to be ~15% shorter than in the control group (43 min vs. 50 min, P < 0.05). However, the overall scan experience was scored less favorably (3.9 vs. 4.6 in the control group, P < 0.04).

CONCLUSIONS

This simple system provided patient distraction and entertainment leading to perceived shorter scan times, but the provided visualization with abstract animations was not favored by this patient cohort.

Partners and nurses' knowledge and representations of gout: A qualitative study

Adherence to gout treatment is poor. Partners of patients and nurses are two major communicators with gouty patients, and their perceptions of illness may affect patient behavior.

OBJECTIVE

To explore partners' and nurses' knowledge and representations of gout.

METHODS

We used a qualitative grounded approach with semi-structured face-to-face individual interviews with a purposive sample of hospital nurses working in rheumatology and internal medicine departments and patient partners. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. All authors met regularly to discuss coding and data interpretation.

RESULTS

Overall, 20 nurses and 12 partners participated in the interviews. Four major themes were evidenced: knowledge gaps (gout cause was unknown, unawareness of urate-lowering therapy and the possibility to cure gout, focus in gout flare and diet); lack of information and education on gout (knowledge acquired by personal experiences, nurses complained to be insufficiently educated, partners highlighted the lack of information and that general practitioners did not have time to educate patients); gout consequences and social impacts (handicapping disease, avoid social activities like dinner with friends); attitudes towards gout flare and patient management (feeling powerless during flare, negative feelings such as being ashamed leading to postpone medical seek or unconcerned about their partner disease). Nurses regretted that they had not enough time to discuss issues with patients.

CONCLUSION

Partners and nurses' knowledge of gout is based on daily experiences. Participants were eager to learn more about gout. Nurses' education and education programs including partners may improve gout management and patient adherence to treatment.

Dynamic Protention: The Architecture of Real-Time Cognition for Future Events

For over 30 years now, a body of physiological evidence has been acquired which indicates that cognitive operations coordinate via the phase synchronization of neuronal firing. While usually ascribed to "binding," i.e., the putting together of basic perceptual features to form more complex perceptual units, this ascription is not without critics, who identify phase synchronization as a function of sensorimotor coordination. From the perspective of an experimental paradigm used to measure the effects of stimulus synchronization, we discuss what is "bound" and attempt a reconciliation between perceptual and sensorimotor accounts of oscillatory synchronization. Our evidence identifies a role for synchronization in protentive coding, this is to say, coding in anticipation of a future event, and hence describes the architecture of real-time cognition for future events.

The longitudinal effects of military spouses' concern and behaviors over partner drinking on relationship functioning

Among those in close relationships, the perception that one's partner has a drinking problem is more strongly related to detriments in relationship quality than are the actual rates of the partner's drinking. The current study extends this work by examining the effects of this perception on relationship functioning longitudinally and whether this association is mediated by changes in how one behaves in response to their partner's drinking. Spouses and partners of military service members who were concerned about their partner's drinking (n = 234) completed a baseline survey and a follow-up assessment five months later. Structural equation modeling was used to prospectively examine the association between concern about partner drinking and relationship functioning (i.e., relationship quality, conflict, communication patterns), and the mediated effect of regulation strategies. Results suggested that changes in participant concern were related to changes in relationship functioning, and these changes were mediated by changes in punishment and rewarding sobriety regulation strategies. This research suggests that concern about partner drinking is linked with poorer relationship functioning partly because of the increased use of punishment and the decreased use of rewarding sobriety.

Visual expectations change subjective experience without changing performance

It is widely believed that visual expectations can change the subjective experiences of humans. We investigated how visual expectations in a recognition task affected objective performance and subjective perception. Using a 2-alternative-forced-choice task based on digit recognition of briefly presented and visually masked digits, we found over two experiments that expectations changed the quality of the experiences without changing the performance capabilities associated with the quality of experience. Expectations were manipulated by providing a cue indicating the set of possible digits that might appear on each trial. The results also inform the debate about whether subjective experiences can be categorized in a dichotomous manner or in a graded manner. We found that subjective experiences were graded near the objective threshold and more dichotomous away from the threshold. Furthermore, distinct expectations resulted in a more dichotomous distribution of subjective experience. We also provide evidence of an interesting relationship between stimulus duration, objective performance and subjective ratings. Only experiences that were rated as evoking some degree of perception showed systematic improvements in objective performance as a function of stimulus duration. These findings suggest that subjective experience cannot be understood without considering the broader cognitive context, namely that the quality of subjective experiences is dependent on a multitude of factors such as attention, task requirements and cognitive expectations.

Knowledge and attitudes of Tunisian dog owners regarding leishmaniasis

BACKGROUND

Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease of major public health concern in several countries in the world. The local population awareness would improve prevention, early detection and treatment of both human and animal leishmaniasis.

METHODS

The aim of this survey was to assess the knowledge about visceral leishmaniasis in a sample of dog owners visiting the National School of Veterinary Medicine of Sidi Thabet, Tunisia, through a structured questionnaire.

FINDINGS

Two hundred dog owners were interviewed, 87% were men and 47% had higher education level. Ninety four per cent were from neighbouring districts to Ariana, where the National School of Sidi Thabet is located. Out of 200 respondents, 79 confirmed knowing leishmaniasis. The correct answers concerning canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) (77%) were significantly higher than those concerning human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) (23%). Correct answers concerning CVL were given in part by previously diseased dogs' owners. The respondent could not explain what is exactly leishmaniasis, but the majority of questioned persons know that human and dogs are the most important hosts. Forty-four out 79 (56%) of the persons think that mosquitoes or insects are the vectors of leishmaniasis and 63% (53/79) knows that it is a zoonotic disease but 72% (38/53) were not able to define how.

CONCLUSION

Despite the frequent visits to veterinarians for vaccination or other medical issues and their long experience in dog breeding, the sample of dog owners had not enough knowledge and several misconceptions regarding leishmaniasis. Large education programmes should be implemented in Tunisia to improve the knowledge of the Tunisian population, especially dog owners, concerning leishmaniasis.

Holding a real object during encoding helps the learning of foreign vocabulary

This study aims at assessing and comparing two different methods for learning new vocabulary words in a foreign language. Learning vocabulary with images as non-verbal aids was compared to learning vocabulary with real objects. The Rwandan children who participated in this study learnt French as a third language. They took part in training sessions to learn different French words either seeing the corresponding image or holding the corresponding object. The training program was implemented in a Rwandan primary school with children of different ages (from five to 10 years old). The results showed that the words associated to objects that were held by the children during learning were better memorized than the words associated with images. The global memory performance was lower for the youngest children; however, learning with objects proved to be superior over learning with images for all ages. Taken together, the findings underscore that learning vocabulary with real objects is particularly efficient and support the idea that the embodied theory of language is a key element to effectively master a foreign language.

Comparison between meteorological data and farmer perceptions of climate change and vulnerability in relation to adaptation

How farmers perceive climate change has an influence on how they adapt to climate change. Climate change perception and vulnerability were assessed based on the household survey information collected from randomly selected 118 farmers of Kalapara subdistrict in Bangladesh. This paper identified the socio-economic covariates of climate change perception and vulnerability in relation to agricultural adaptation. It was also determined whether their perception was consistent with meteorological information. Findings revealed that the farmers had a moderate level of perception of and vulnerability to climate change. An overwhelming majority (98%) of the respondents perceived a warmer summer and 96% of them observed a colder winter compared to the past. Among the farmers, 91% believed that rainfall had increased and 97% thought that the timing of rainfall had changed. The belief of increase in soil salinity and associated loss was prevailing among 98 and 99% of them, respectively. Observed climate data were mostly aligned with the farmers' perception with respect to temperature, rainfall, floods, droughts and salinity. Positive correlations were found among the perception of climate change, the perception of vulnerability and the number of adopted adaptation practices. Farmers' level of understanding of climate change, vulnerability and adaptation practices could be improved by involving them in different organizations, such as climate field school and farmer associations. It could accelerate the dissemination of agricultural adaptation practices among them to cope with adverse agricultural impacts of climate change.

The gist and details of sex differences in cognition and the brain: How parallels in sex differences across domains are shaped by the locus coeruleus and catecholamine systems

Across three different domains, there are similar sex differences in how men and women process information. There tends to be a male advantage in attending to and remembering the gist (essential central information of a scene or situation), but a female advantage in attending to and remembering the details (non-essential peripheral information of a scene or situation). This is seen in emotional memory, where emotion enhances gist memory more for males than for females, but enhances detail memory more for females than for males. It also occurs in spatial memory, where men tend to notice and remember the gist of where they or objects are in space, allowing them to more flexibly manipulate themselves or objects within that space, whereas women tend to recall the details of the space around them, allowing them to accurately remember the locations of objects. Finally, such sex differences have also been noted in perception of stimuli such that men attend to global aspects of stimuli (such as a large letter E) more than women, whereas women attend more to the local aspects (such as the many smaller letter Ts making up the E). We review the parallel sex differences seen across these domains in this paper and how they relate to the different brain systems involved in each of these task domains. In addition, we discuss how sex differences in evolutionary pressures and in the locus coeruleus and norepinephrine system may account for why parallel sex differences occur across these different task domains.

How do nurses and midwives perceive their preparedness for quality improvement and patient safety in practice? A cross-sectional national study in Ireland

BACKGROUND

Although patient safety and quality are cornerstones of healthcare practice, evidence is limited of the knowledge, skills and competence of practicing nurses and midwives in Ireland.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the perceptions of nurses and midwives regarding their continuing professional development-based preparedness for, and participation in quality and safety in the clinical setting.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional survey was undertaken across the Republic of Ireland in 2016 examining nurses and midwives' perceptions of their knowledge and skills in quality and safety methods and tools, their views of competence in this field using the domains from the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) framework (person-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics), and their participation in practice related to their access to quality and safety data.

SETTINGS

12 Health Service Executive (HSE) Centers of Nursing and Midwifery Education (CNMEs) in Ireland PARTICIPANTS: Practicing nurses and midwives (n = 654) working in acute hospitals and community healthcare organizations who were undertaking continuing professional development (CPD) education at the time of data collection (March-April 2016).

METHODS

Survey methodology. 1787 surveys were distributed. Data were analyzed by IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.

RESULTS

A response rate of 37% (n = 654/1787) was achieved. While respondents were highly trained academically, many reported a lack of confidence in quality and safety methods and tools and QSEN competencies. Frontline staff nurses and midwives reported they were less prepared than their mid and senior level colleagues. Significant numbers indicated they were not engaged in quality and safety in practice.

CONCLUSIONS

This first nationwide study in Ireland has discovered that nurses and midwives perceive gaps in their preparedness to engage in quality improvement and patient safety in practice. To safeguard patient care, priority should be given to ensuring front-line staff are appropriately educated, have access to data, and time to competently participate in the continuous improvement of patient care.

Experiences and Perceptions of Abused Turkish Women Regarding Violence Against Women

This study qualitatively explored abused Turkish women's experiences and perceptions regarding violence against women. The research sample comprised 30 women who were seen by the police and referred to the Family Counseling Center between 2 October 2012 and 30 August 2013 due to domestic violence. Study data were collected using a Demographic Information Datasheet and a Semi-Structured Interview Form. Qualitative data were gathered using face-to-face interviews, which were transcribed verbatim then analyzed and interpreted to determine themes using the conceptual framework. Qualitative analysis yielded five themes: (1) being subjected to all types of violence; (2) everything is an excuse for violence; (3) forgetting what it is like to be a woman; (4) having to continue the marriage against her will; (5) being forced to do some things involuntarily in order to reduce the violence. In the light of these results, it seems that multidisciplinary approaches are required in order to support women both psychologically and socially. Women need to be supported in order to determine their mental health problems and to get the required medical assistance.

Brief Report: Visual Perception, Task-Induced Pupil Response Trajectories and ASD Features in Children

We applied a trajectory-based analysis to eye tracking data in order to quantify individualized patterns of pupil response in the context of global-local processing that may be associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) features. Multiple pupil response trajectories across both global and local conditions were identified. Using the combined trajectory patterns for global and local conditions for each individual, we were able to identify three groups based on trajectory group membership that were thought to reflect perceptual strategy. Results indicated that the proportion of children with ASD was significantly greater in the group demonstrating a local-focus response. This research presents a novel analytic approach to the objective characterization of individualized pupil response patterns that are associated with ASD features.

Relationship between split-step timing and leg stiffness in world-class tennis players when returning fast serves

This study investigated split-step timing when returning serves and whether this timing is related to neuromechanical capabilities in world-class tennis players. In Experiment 1, the split-step timing of four groups of world-class players (male and female ATP/WTA seniors, and ITF juniors) was measured on court when returning serves of the same level players. The four groups initiated the split-step at a similar time, starting around the time ball-racket contact in the serve stroke and landed when early ball-flight information was available. In Experiment 2, the neuromechanical capabilities (leg stiffness and vertical jump performance) of a group of world-class players and three groups of less-skilled tennis players were examined. The results showed an increase in leg stiffness with an increase in the level of expertise. A cross-experiment analysis in world-class male players (ATP/ITF, n = 10) revealed that the timing of initial foot movement was significantly correlated with the leg stiffness (r² = 0.54), with later lateral step after the serve in the players who had higher stiffness. The findings support the hypothesis that world-class tennis players adapt perceptual-motor control on the basis of their neuromechanical capabilities and maximise the time before initiating their interceptive action to rely on more reliable information.

Emergency Department Clinician Experiences and Perceptions Regarding Noncardiac Chest Pain: A Cross-Sectional Survey

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this study are to report the responses of emergency department (ED) clinicians regarding the characteristics and management of patients with noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) and to explore clinician experiences with the current standard of care and whether nonpharmacologic or nonsurgical referral options would be considered.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was delivered to 40 ED clinicians from hospitals in Winnipeg, Manitoba from 2012 to 2013. Data were reduced descriptively and thematically summarized to assess the characteristics of patients with NCCP along with the responses of ED clinicians regarding the management of NCCP.

RESULTS

The survey response was 27 (67.5% response rate). They reported that patients with NCCP comprised a considerable amount of ED care and are a variable and heterogeneous population. Respondents agreed (63.0%) that onsite and on-call providers for NCCP referral would assist in patient management. Further, ED clinicians (66.7%) would consider referring patients with NCCP to a nonpharmacologic, nonsurgical clinical research study.

CONCLUSION

Clinicians in this study wanted better access to on-site referrals and outpatient clinics for patients experiencing NCCP after discharge and would consider nonpharmacologic or nonsurgical referral.

Advance care planning dispositions: the relationship between knowledge and perception

BACKGROUND

Legal dispositions for advance care planning (ACP) are available but used by a minority of older adults in Switzerland. Some studies found that knowledge of and perception of those dispositions are positively associated with their higher usage. The objective of the present study is to test the hypothesis of an association between increased knowledge of ACP dispositions and a more positive perception of them.

METHODS

Data collected in 2014 among 2125 Swiss community-dwellers aged 71 to 80 of the Lausanne cohort 65+ (Lc65+), a population-based longitudinal study on aging and frailty. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire on knowledge, use and perception of lasting power of attorney, advance directives and designation of a health care proxy. Covariables were extracted from the Lc65+ database. Bivariable and multivariable regression analyses assessed the association between level of knowledge and perception.

RESULTS

Half the participants did not know about legal dispositions for ACP; filing rates were 14% for advance directives, 11% for health care proxy and 6% for lasting power of attorney. Level of knowledge about the dispositions was associated with a more positive perception of them, even when adjusting for confounding factors.

CONCLUSION

Although the direction of the association's causality needs more investigation, results indicate that better knowledge on ACP dispositions could improve the perception older people have of them. Communication on dispositions should take into account individual knowledge levels and address commonly enunciated barriers that seem to diminish with increased knowledge.

Community knowledge and perceptions on malaria prevention and house screening in Nyabondo, Western Kenya

BACKGROUND

Screening of houses to prevent mosquito entry is increasingly being recommended as an effective and practical method against malaria transmission through reduced human-mosquito contact. The objective of the study was to assess community knowledge and perceptions on malaria prevention and house screening in a malaria endemic area of Western Kenya.

METHODS

A cross-sectional household survey was conducted in 2017 in Nyabondo area of western Kenya. A total of 80 households were randomly selected to participate in the study within 16 villages. Structured questionnaires, focus group discussions and key informant interviews were used to collect data.

RESULTS

A total of 80 respondents participated in the survey and more than half (53.8%) reported to have attained primary education. About 91% of the respondents had previously seen or heard malaria messages and this was associated with the respondents level of education (χ2 = 10.163; df 4; P = 0.038, 95% CI). However, other variables like gender, marital status, religion and occupation were not significantly associated with knowledge in malaria. Insecticide treated mosquito nets was by far the most reported known (97.4%) and applied (97.6%) personal protective while only 15.6% respondents were aware of house screening. The major reason given for screening doors, windows and eaves was to prevent entry of mosquito and other insects (> 85%). Lack of awareness was the major reason given for not screening houses. Grey colour was the most preferred choice for screen material (48%), and the main reason given was that grey matched the colour of the walls (21%) and did not 'gather' dust quickly.

CONCLUSION

House screening was not a common intervention for self-protection against malaria vectors in the study area. There is need to advocate and promote house screening to increase community knowledge on this as an additional integrated vector management strategy for malaria control.

The development of the size-weight illusion in children coincides with the development of nonverbal cognition rather than motor skills

We examined how the strength of the size-weight illusion develops with age in typically developing children. To this end, we recruited children aged 5-12 years and quantified the degree to which they experienced the illusion. We hypothesized that the strength of the illusion would increase with age. The results supported this hypothesis. We also measured abilities in manual dexterity, receptive language, and abstract reasoning to determine whether changes in illusion strength were associated with these factors. Manual dexterity and receptive language did not correlate with illusion strength. Conversely, illusion strength and abstract reasoning were tightly coupled with each other. Multiple regression further revealed that age, manual dexterity, and receptive language did not contribute more to the variance in illusion strength beyond children's abilities in abstract reasoning. Taken together, the effects of age on the size-weight illusion appear to be explained by the development of nonverbal cognition. These findings not only inform the literature on child development but also have implications for theoretical explanations on the size-weight illusion. We suggest that the illusion has a strong acquired component to it and that it is strengthened by children's reasoning skills and perhaps an understanding of the world that develops with age.

The efficacy of a pharmacist implemented educational treatment programme for people with epilepsy: A report of a randomised controlled trial

PURPOSE

To evaluate the efficacy of a pharmacist implemented educational treatment programme in improving knowledge and perception of epilepsy among people with the condition.

METHOD

A randomized controlled study was conducted on patients with epilepsy recruited from the medical and neurology out-patient clinics of two tertiary hospitals. Patients in the intervention group were offered an educational treatment programme implemented by a clinical pharmacist. The impact of the educational intervention was evaluated by using an epilepsy knowledge scale and the brief illness perception questionnaire.

RESULTS

There was a statistical significant difference between the control and intervention group over time on the knowledge of epilepsy, as the knowledge of epilepsy among patients in the intervention group significantly increased; F (2154) = 150.15, p = 0.000, Partial η² = 0.661. Also, there was a statistical significant difference between the control and intervention group over time on the perception of epilepsy, as the perception of epilepsy among patients in the intervention group significantly improved; F (2, 154) = 12.386, p = 0.000, Partial η² = 0.138.

CONCLUSION

The Pharmacist implemented educational intervention improved patients' knowledge and perception of epilepsy. This finding has revealed the potential positive impact of pharmacists' involvement in the management of epilepsy.

Prediction and perception: Insights for (and from) tinnitus

More than 150 years have passed since Helmholtz first described perception as a process of unconscious inference about the causes of sensations. His ideas have since inspired a wealth of literature investigating the mechanisms underlying these inferences. In recent years, much of this work has converged on the notion that the brain is a hierarchical generative model of its environment that predicts sensations and updates itself based on prediction errors. Here, we build a case for modeling tinnitus from this perspective, i.e. predictive coding. We emphasize two key claims: (1) acute tinnitus reflects an increase in sensory precision in related frequency channels and (2) chronic tinnitus reflects a change in the brain's default prediction. We further discuss specific neural biomarkers that would constitute evidence for or against these claims. Finally, we explore the implications of our model for clinical intervention strategies. We conclude that predictive coding offers the basis for a unifying theory of cognitive neuroscience, which we demonstrate with several examples linking tinnitus to other lines of brain research.

Psychiatric Neurosurgery: A Survey on the Perceptions of Psychiatrists and Residents

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the attitudes and perceptions of psychiatrists and psychiatry residents regarding neurosurgical procedures for treating psychiatric disorders and to identify potential barriers to patient referral.

METHODS

A survey consisting of 25 questions was created using SurveyMonkey and was distributed to psychiatrists and psychiatry residents in Quebec. The study was approved by the McGill University Health Center's Research Ethics Board. Descriptive statistics and Friedman's test were performed using SPSS software.

RESULTS

A total of 99 participants, including 64 residents and 35 psychiatrists, completed more than 75% of the survey and were included in data analysis. Overall, participants were significantly (p &lt; 0.0005) more comfortable in referring patients suffering from treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder than from treatment-resistant major depressive disorder and preferred to refer patients for deep brain stimulation (DBS) rather than for anterior cingulotomy/capsulotomy (AC). Only 11.43% of psychiatrists had ever referred a patient for AC or DBS, and 34.69% of respondents felt that these procedures were dangerous. Lack of knowledge (82.83%) was viewed as the principal limiting factor, and 57.58% of respondents identified ≥6 different barriers to patient referral. The majority of participants (69.39%) were interested in improving their knowledge on psychiatric neurosurgery, and 82.65% felt that this subject should be included in the psychiatry residency curriculum.

CONCLUSION

Overall, participants acknowledged having many limitations to referring patients for neurosurgical interventions. While informative conferences discussing neuromodulation/neuroablation could easily address many barriers, further studies are required to assess how these could change attitudes and patterns of referral.

Abusive supervision and turnover intention: Mediating effects of psychological empowerment of nurses

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to determine the mediating effects of psychological empowerment on abusive supervision and turnover intention as perceived by nurses to provide information to change the status of nurse turnover.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey (a questionnaire examining perceptions of abusive supervision, measurement of psychological empowerment, and questionnaire for turnover intention) was used to collect data. A total of 1127 clinical nurses, who were recruited through convenience sampling, participated in the survey.

RESULTS

Nurses' average perceived abusive supervision, psychological empowerment, and turnover intention scores were 1.62 ± 0.95, 3.24 ± 0.83, and 14.17 ± 3.78, respectively. Psychological empowerment was found to mediate the relationship between abusive supervision and turnover intention (P < 0.01). Turnover intention tends to be stronger and psychological empowerment reduced when nurse managers adopt an abusive leadership style.

CONCLUSIONS

Nurses' psychological empowerment is an intermediary variable that predicts the relationship between abusive supervision and turnover intention. Nurse managers should manage abusive supervision to increase nurses' psychological empowerment and decrease turnover intention.

Towards dynamic modeling of visual-vestibular conflict detection

Visual-vestibular mismatch is a common occurrence, with causes ranging from vehicular travel, to vestibular dysfunction, to virtual reality displays. Behavioral and physiological consequences of this mismatch include adaptation of reflexive eye movements, oscillopsia, vertigo, and nausea. Despite this significance, we still do not have a good understanding of how the nervous system evaluates visual-vestibular conflict. Here we review research that quantifies perceptual sensitivity to visual-vestibular conflict and factors that mediate this sensitivity, such as noise on visual and vestibular sensory estimates. We emphasize that dynamic modeling methods are necessary to investigate how the nervous system monitors conflict between time-varying visual and vestibular signals, and we present a simple example of a drift-diffusion model for visual-vestibular conflict detection. The model makes predictions for detection of conflict arising from changes in both visual gain and latency. We conclude with discussion of topics for future research.
