Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study extended a classic self-referential learning paradigm by investigating the effects of intranasally-administered oxytocin in high and low socially anxious participants during social learning, as a function of social anxiety levels and sex. METHODS In a randomized double-blinded design, 160 participants were either given intranasal oxytocin (24 I.U.) or placebo. Subsequently, while lying in an MR scanner, participants were shown neutral faces that were paired with positively, neutrally, or negatively valenced self-referential sentences, during which we measured self-reported arousal and sympathy of the facial stimuli, pupil dilation, and changes in the brain-oxygen-level dependent signal. Four-factor mixed analyses of variance with the between-subjects factors group (high socially anxious vs. low socially anxious), substance (oxytocin vs. placebo), and sex (male vs. female) and the within-subjects factor sentence valence (positive vs. neutral vs. negative) were conducted for each measure, respectively. RESULTS Administration of intranasal oxytocin yielded an increase in sympathy ratings in high socially anxious compared to low socially anxious individuals and decreased arousal ratings for positively-conditioned faces in low socially anxious participants. As an objective physiological measure of arousal, pupil dilation mirrored the behavioral results. Oxytocin effects on neural activation in the insula interacted with anxiety levels and sex: low socially anxious individuals yielded lower activation under oxytocin than placebo; the converse was observed in high socially anxious individuals. This interaction also differed between sexes, as men yielded higher activation levels than women. These findings were more prominent for positively- and negatively-conditioned faces. Within the amygdala, high socially anxious men yielded higher activation than high socially anxious women in the left hemisphere, and low socially anxious men yielded higher activation than low socially anxious women from positively- and negatively-conditioned faces, though no influence of oxytocin was detected. CONCLUSION These results suggest oxytocin-induced behavioral, physiological, and neural changes as a function of social learning in socially low and high anxious individuals. These findings challenge the amygdalocentric view of the role of emotions in social learning, instead contributing to the growing body of findings implicating the insula therein, revealing an interaction between oxytocin, sex, and emotional valence. Such discoveries raise an interesting set of questions regarding the computational goals of regions such as the insula in emotional learning and how neural activity can play a diagnostic or prognostic role in social anxiety, potentially leading to new treatment opportunities that may combine oxytocin and neurofeedback differentially for men and women.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine how high myopia impacts pharmacological pupillary dilation, and to evaluate the relationship between the extent of pharmacologic pupillary dilation and axial length. METHODS Patients were grouped into high myopes, defined as one or both eyes having a refractive error greater than - 6 diopters, and controls (between - 2 and + 2 diopters). Dilation was achieved with 1 drop each of tropicamide 1% and phenylephrine 2.5%. Pupil size was measured at full and dim light prior to dilation, then 15 and 30 min after dilation. Biometry was measured for each patient. Statistical analyses were performed using the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon tests, two-sample Welch's t-tests, and linear mixed effect models and generalized estimating equations models accounting for inter-eye correlation. RESULTS Forty patients (20 high myopes and 20 controls, 80 eyes total) participated in the study. High myopes had larger pupils at baseline and achieved significantly greater pupillary size (7.08 mm, 95% CI: 6.97 to 7.19 mm) than controls (6.23 mm, 95% CI: 5.94 to 6.52 mm) after 30 min of dilation (P < .0005). Fully dilated pupil size at 30 min was significantly correlated with both refractive error (r = - 0.57, P < .0005) and axial length (r = 0.47, P < .0005). Generalized estimating equations and linear mixed effect models identified other predictive variables of pupil size after dilation including age and white-to-white diameter. CONCLUSIONS Highly myopic patients dilate to a larger pupillary size compared to other patients. Predicting dilation based on extent of myopia could facilitate intraocular surgery planning and reduce clinic wait times for myopic patients.

Abstract
Attention is not constant but rather fluctuates over time and these attentional fluctuations may prioritize the processing of certain events over others. In music listening, the pleasurable urge to move to music (termed 'groove' by music psychologists) offers a particularly convenient case study of oscillatory attention because it engenders synchronous and oscillatory movements which also vary predictably with stimulus complexity. In this study, we simultaneously recorded pupillometry and scalp electroencephalography (EEG) from participants while they listened to drumbeats of varying complexity that they rated in terms of groove afterwards. Using the intertrial phase coherence of the beat frequency, we found that while subjects were listening, their pupil activity became entrained to the beat of the drumbeats and this entrained attention persisted in the EEG even as subjects imagined the drumbeats continuing through subsequent silent periods. This entrainment in both the pupillometry and EEG worsened with increasing rhythmic complexity, indicating poorer sensory precision as the beat became more obscured. Additionally, sustained pupil dilations revealed the expected, inverted U-shaped relationship between rhythmic complexity and groove ratings. Taken together, this work bridges oscillatory attention to rhythmic complexity in relation to musical groove.

Abstract
PURPOSE Gaze tracking and pupillometry are established proxies for cognitive load, giving insights into a user's mental effort. In tele-robotic surgery, knowing a user's cognitive load can inspire novel human-machine interaction designs, fostering contextual surgical assistance systems and personalized training programs. While pupillometry-based methods for estimating cognitive effort have been proposed, their application in surgery is limited by the pupil's sensitivity to brightness changes, which can mask pupil's response to cognitive load. Thus, methods considering pupil and brightness conditions are essential for detecting cognitive effort in unconstrained scenarios. METHODS To contend with this challenge, we introduce a personalized pupil response model integrating pupil and brightness-based features. Discrepancies between predicted and measured pupil diameter indicate dilations due to non-brightness-related sources, i.e., cognitive effort. Combined with gaze entropy, it can detect cognitive load using a random forest classifier. To test our model, we perform a user study with the da Vinci Research Kit, where 17 users perform pick-and-place tasks in addition to auditory tasks known to generate cognitive effort responses. RESULTS We compare our method to two baselines (BCPD and CPD), demonstrating favorable performance in varying brightness conditions. Our method achieves an average true positive rate of 0.78, outperforming the baselines (0.57 and 0.64). CONCLUSION We present a personalized brightness-aware model for cognitive effort detection able to operate under unconstrained brightness conditions, comparing favorably to competing approaches, contributing to the advancement of cognitive effort detection in tele-robotic surgery. Future work will consider alternative learning strategies, handling the difficult positive-unlabeled scenario in user studies, where only some positive and no negative events are reliably known.

Abstract
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia robustly predict functional outcomes but remain relatively resistant to available treatments. Better measures of negative symptoms, especially motivational deficits, are needed to better understand these symptoms and improve treatment development. Recent research shows promise in linking behavioral effort tasks to motivational negative symptoms, reward processing deficits, and defeatist attitudes, but few studies account for individual or group (patient v. control) differences in cognitive ability to perform the tasks. Individuals with poorer abilities might be less motivated to perform tasks because they find them more difficult to perform. This study used a personalized digit span task to control task difficulty while measuring task effort via pupillary responses (greater dilation indicates greater cognitive effort) at varying monetary rewards ($1 & $2). Participants with schizophrenia (N = 34) and healthy controls (N = 41) performed a digit span task with personalized max span lengths and easy (max- 2 digits) and overload (max+ 2 digits) conditions. Consistent with many studies, pupillary responses (cognitive effort) increased with greater difficulty until exceeding capacity. A similar pattern of reward responsivity was seen in both groups, such that greater reward increased dilation (effort) comparably for both groups when difficulty was within capacity. Neither patients nor controls exerted increased effort for greater reward when difficulty exceeded capacity. In patients, positive relationships were found between pupil dilation and defeatist performance beliefs if task difficulty was within capacity; a relationship that reversed if the task was too difficult. The findings demonstrate the importance of accounting for cognitive capacity and task difficulty when evaluating motivation and reward sensitivity and illustrate the utility of pupillary responses as an objective measure of effort in schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although millions of children sustain concussions each year, a rapid and objective test for concussion has remained elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate quantitative pupillometry in pediatric patients in the acute, postinjury setting. METHODS This was a prospective case-control study of concussed patients presenting to the emergency department within 72 hours of injury. Pupillary measurements were gathered using NeurOptics' PLR 3000; evaluation included a symptom checklist and neurocognitive assessment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression models. RESULTS A total of 126 participants were enrolled. One significant difference in pupillometry between concussed and control participants was found: left minimum pupil diameter in 12- to 18 year-olds (P = 0.02). Models demonstrating odds of a concussion revealed significant associations for time to 75% recovery (T75) of the left pupil in five- to 11-year-olds and average dilation velocity of the left pupil in 12- to 18-year-olds (P = 0.03 and 0.02 respectively). Models predicting symptom improvement showed one significant association: percent change of the right pupil in five-to-11-year-olds (P = 0.02). Models predicting neurocognitive improvement in 12- to 18-year-olds demonstrated significant association in T75 in the left pupil for visual memory, visual motor processing speed, and reaction time (P = 0.002, P = 0.04, P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS The limited statistically significant associations found in this study suggest that pupillometry may not be useful in pediatrics in the acute postinjury setting for either the diagnosis of concussion or to stratify risk for prolonged recovery.

Abstract
Technologies for monitoring organ function are rapidly advancing, aiding physicians in the care of patients in both operating rooms (ORs) and intensive care units (ICUs). Some of these emerging, minimally or non-invasive technologies focus on monitoring brain function and ensuring the integrity of its physiology. Generally, the central nervous system is the least monitored system compared to others, such as the respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal systems, even though it is a primary target in most therapeutic strategies. Frequently, the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, and analgesics are entirely unpredictable, especially in critically ill patients with multiple organ failure. This unpredictability exposes them to the risks of inadequate or excessive sedation/hypnosis, potentially leading to complications and long-term negative outcomes. The International PRactice On TEChnology neuro-moniToring group (I-PROTECT), comprised of experts from various fields of clinical neuromonitoring, presents this document with the aim of reviewing and standardizing the primary non-invasive tools for brain monitoring in anesthesia and intensive care practices. The focus is particularly on standardizing the nomenclature of different parameters generated by these tools. The document addresses processed electroencephalography, continuous/quantitative electroencephalography, brain oxygenation through near-infrared spectroscopy, transcranial Doppler, and automated pupillometry. The clinical utility of the key parameters available in each of these tools is summarized and explained. This comprehensive review was conducted by a panel of experts who deliberated on the included topics until a consensus was reached. Images and tables are utilized to clarify and enhance the understanding of the clinical significance of non-invasive neuromonitoring devices within these medical settings.

Abstract
AIMS Compensatory mechanisms in heart failure (HF) are triggered to maintain adequate cardiac output. Among them, hyperactivation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is one of the main ones and carries a worse prognosis. The pupillary reflex depends on the SNS, and we can evaluate it through pupillometry. The aim of the study was to compare the differences in pupillary reflex between patients with acute HF and controls and to analyse whether these differences in pupillary reflex may offer a new and easy prognostic factor in such patients. METHODS AND RESULTS We prospectively and consecutively included 107 patients admitted with decompensated HF. Quantitative pupillometry was performed with the NeuroOptics pupillometry during the first 24 h after admission and prior to discharge. The results were compared with those of a group of 100 healthy volunteers who also underwent pupillometry. The maximum baseline pupil size (MBPS) and the minimum pupil diameter (MPD) were measured. Patients with decompensated HF have a higher MBPS (3.64 ± 0.81) and higher MPD (2.60 ± 0.58) than HF patients at discharge and in the control group (P-value = 0.01 and 0.01, respectively). Also, HF patients presented an improvement in pupillometric values at discharge [MBPS (3.47 ± 0.79) and MPD (2.51 ± 0.58)] and showed no differences compared with the control group [MBPS (3.34 ± 0.82) and MPD (2.40 ± 0.53)] (P-value = 0.19 and 0.14, respectively). In addition, MBPS provides a good independent predictor of in-hospital and 1 month mortality in patients admitted with HF. Six patients (5.61%) died during hospital admission, and 11 patients (10.2%) died in the first month after discharge. Also, four patients (3.74%) were readmitted within 1 month of discharge. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for predicting in-hospital mortality through MBPS was 0.823. No patient with an MBPS < 3.7 mm died. The ROC curve for predicting combined mortality or readmission within the first month for MBPS was 0.698. CONCLUSIONS Pupillometry may be a new, non-invasive, and simple tool to determine the status of SNS, help in the prognostic stratification of acute HF patients, and improve therapeutic management.

Abstract
Background In neurologic prognostication of comatose survivors from cardiac arrest, two independent predictors of poor outcome are the loss of the Pupillary light reflex (PLR) and the loss of the N20 response from Somatosensory Evoked potentials (SSEP). The PLR can be quantitatively assessed by pupillometry. Both tests depend on the midbrain, in which a dysfunction reflects a severe hypoxic injury. We reasoned that a certain level of defective PLR would be predictive of a bilaterally absent SSEP N20 response. Method Neurological Pupil index (NPi) from the pupillometry and the SSEP N20 response were registered >48 h after cardiac arrest in comatose survivors. Clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the capacity of NPi to predict bilaterally absent SSEP N20 response. An NPi threshold value resulting in <5% false positive rate (FPR) for bilaterally absent N20 response was identified. Results From February 2020 to August 2022, we included 54 patients out of which 49 had conclusive pupillometry and SSEP examinations. The NPi threshold value with FPR < 5% was 3.4, yielding 36% sensitivity (95% CI 18-55) and significantly discriminated between respective groups with preserved and bilaterally absent N20 response to SSEP (p-value <0.01). Conclusion In this limited cohort, NPi < 3.4 in patients remaining comatose >48 hours after cardiac arrest predicted bilateral loss of the SSEP N20 response with a FPR < 5%. If validated in a larger cohort, an NPi threshold may be clinically applied in settings where SSEP is unavailable.

Abstract
Cortical tracking of speech is vital for speech segmentation and is linked to speech intelligibility. However, there is no clear consensus as to whether reduced intelligibility leads to a decrease or an increase in cortical speech tracking, warranting further investigation of the factors influencing this relationship. One such factor is listening effort, defined as the cognitive resources necessary for speech comprehension, and reported to have a strong negative correlation with speech intelligibility. Yet, no studies have examined the relationship between speech intelligibility, listening effort, and cortical tracking of speech. The aim of the present study was thus to examine these factors in quiet and distinct adverse listening conditions. Forty-nine normal hearing adults listened to sentences produced casually, presented in quiet and two adverse listening conditions: cafeteria noise and reverberant speech. Electrophysiological responses were registered with electroencephalogram, and listening effort was estimated subjectively using self-reported scores and objectively using pupillometry. Results indicated varying impacts of adverse conditions on intelligibility, listening effort, and cortical tracking of speech, depending on the preservation of the speech temporal envelope. The more distorted envelope in the reverberant condition led to higher listening effort, as reflected in higher subjective scores, increased pupil diameter, and stronger cortical tracking of speech in the delta band. These findings suggest that using measures of listening effort in addition to those of intelligibility is useful for interpreting cortical tracking of speech results. Moreover, reading and phonological skills of participants were positively correlated with listening effort in the cafeteria condition, suggesting a special role of expert language skills in processing speech in this noisy condition. Implications for future research and theories linking atypical cortical tracking of speech and reading disorders are further discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS or taVNS) is a non-invasive method of electrical stimulation of the afferent pathway of the vagus nerve, suggested to drive changes in putative physiological markers of noradrenergic activity, including pupil dilation. OBJECTIVE However, it is unknown whether different taVNS modes can map onto the phasic and tonic modes of noradrenergic activity. The effects of taVNS on pupil dilation in humans are inconsistent, largely due to differences in stimulation protocols. Here, we attempted to address these issues. METHODS We investigated pupil dilation under phasic (1 s) and tonic (30 s) taVNS, in a pre-registered, single-blind, sham-controlled, within-subject cross-over design, in the absence of a behavioural task. RESULTS Phasic taVNS induced a rapid increase in pupil size over baseline, significantly greater than under sham stimulation, which rapidly declined after stimulation offset. Tonic taVNS induced a similarly rapid (and larger than sham) increase in pupil size over baseline, returning to baseline within 5 s, despite the ongoing stimulation. Thus, both active and sham tonic modes closely resembled the phasic effect. There were no differences in tonic baseline pupil size, and no sustained effects of stimulation on tonic baseline pupil size. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that both phasic- and tonic-like taVNS under the standard stimulation parameters may modulate primarily the phasic mode of noradrenergic activity, as indexed by evoked pupil dilation, over and above somatosensory effects. This result sheds light on the temporal profile of phasic and tonic stimulation, with implications for their applicability in further research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurodegenerative diseases share retinal abnormalities. Chromatic pupillometry allows in vivo assessment of photoreceptor functional integrity, including melanopsin-expressing retinal ganglion cells. This exploratory meta-analysis assesses retinal photoreceptor functionality in Alzheimer's vs. Parkinson's disease and conducts an in-depth review of applied pupillometric protocols. METHODS Literature reviews on PubMed and Scopus from 1991 to August 2023 identified chromatic pupillometry studies on Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 42 patients from 2 studies) and Parkinson's disease (PD; n = 66 from 3 studies). Additionally, a pre-AD study (n = 10) and an isolated REM Sleep Behavior Disorder study (iRBD; n = 10) were found, but their results were not included in the meta-analysis statistics. RESULTS Melanopsin-mediated post-illumination pupil response to blue light was not significantly impaired in Alzheimer's (weighted mean difference = -1.54, 95% CI: 4.57 to 1.49, z = -1.00, p = 0.319) but was in Parkinson's (weighted mean difference = -9.14, 95% CI: 14.19 to -4.08, z = -3.54, p < 0.001). Other pupil light reflex metrics showed no significant differences compared to controls. Studies adhered to international standards of pupillometry with moderate to low bias. All studies used full-field stimulation. Alzheimer's studies used direct while Parkinson's studies used consensual measurement. Notably, studies did not control for circadian timing and Parkinson's patients were on dopaminergic treatment. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE Results affirm chromatic pupillometry as a useful method to assess melanopsin-related retinal cell dysfunction in Parkinson's but not in Alzheimer's disease. While adhering to international standards, future studies may analyze the effects of local field stimulation, dopaminergic treatment, and longitudinal design to elucidate melanopsin dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pupillometry provides information about physiological and psychological processes related to cognitive load, familiarity, and deception, and it is outside of conscious control. This study examined pupillary dilation patterns during a performance validity test (PVT) among adults with true and feigned impairment of traumatic brain injury (TBI). PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS Participants were 214 adults in three groups: adults with bona fide moderate to severe TBI (TBI; n = 51), healthy comparisons instructed to perform their best (HC; n = 72), and healthy adults instructed and incentivized to simulate cognitive impairment due to TBI (SIM; n = 91). The Recognition Memory Test (RMT) was administered in the context of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Three pupillary indices were evaluated. Two pure pupil dilation (PD) indices assessed a simple measure of baseline arousal (PD-Baseline) and a nuanced measure of dynamic engagement (PD-Range). A pupillary-behavioral index was also evaluated. Dilation-response inconsistency (DRI) captured the frequency with which examinees displayed a pupillary familiarity response to the correct answer but selected the unfamiliar stimulus (incorrect answer). RESULTS All three indices differed significantly among the groups, with medium-to-large effect sizes. PD-Baseline appeared sensitive to oculomotor dysfunction due to TBI; adults with TBI displayed significantly lower chronic arousal as compared to the two groups of healthy adults (SIM, HC). Dynamic engagement (PD-Range) yielded a hierarchical structure such that SIM were more dynamically engaged than TBI followed by HC. As predicted, simulators engaged in DRI significantly more frequently than other groups. Moreover, subgroup analyses indicated that DRI differed significantly for simulators who scored in the invalid range on the RMT (n = 45) versus adults with genuine TBI who scored invalidly (n = 15). CONCLUSIONS The findings support continued research on the application of pupillometry to performance validity assessment: Overall, the findings highlight the promise of biometric indices in multimethod assessments of performance validity.

Abstract
RATIONALE Understanding mechanisms of drug use decisions will inform the development of treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD). Decision-making experiments using neurobehavioral approaches require many trials or events of interest for statistical analysis, but the pharmacokinetics of most opioids limit dosing in humans. OBJECTIVES This experiment characterized the effects of repeated infusions of the ultra-short acting opioid remifentanil in people with OUD and physical opioid dependence. METHODS An inpatient study using a within-subjects, single-blind, escalating, within-session, pre-post design was conducted. Seven (3 female) subjects were maintained on oral oxycodone (40-60 mg, 4x/day = 160-240 total mg/day) for seven days prior to the dose-ranging session. Subjects received infusions of three ascending remifentanil doses (0.03, 0.1, 0.3 mcg/kg/infusion in 2 subjects; 0.1, 0.3, 1.0 mcg/kg/infusion in 5 subjects) every minute for 40 min per dose, with infusions administered over 5 s to model naturalistic delivery rates. End tidal carbon dioxide, respiration rate, oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate were measured continuously. Blood pressure (BP), pupil diameter and self-reported drug effects were measured every 5 min. RESULTS Pupil diameter, SpO2 and systolic BP decreased, and ratings on prototypic subjective effects questionnaire items increased, as a function of remifentanil dose. The number of infusions held because of sedation or physiological parameters exceeding predetermined cutoffs also increased with dose. CONCLUSIONS This experiment established doses and procedures for the safe delivery of rapid, repeated remifentanil infusions to individuals with OUD and physical fentanyl dependence, which can be applied to the mechanistic study of opioid use decisions.

Abstract
People are more likely to perform poorly on a self-control task following a previous task requiring self-control (ego-depletion), but the mechanism for this effect remains unclear. We used pupillometry to test the role of attentional effort in ego-depletion. We hypothesized that an elevated pupil diameter (PD)-a common physiological measure of effort-during an initial task requiring self-control should be negatively associated with performance on a subsequent control task. To test this hypothesis, participants were first assigned to either a high- or low-demand attention task (manipulation; a standard ego-depletion paradigm), after which all participants completed the same Stroop task. We then separately extracted both sustained (low-frequency) and phasic (high-frequency) changes in PD from both tasks to evaluate possible associations with lapses of cognitive control on the Stroop task. We first show that in the initial task, sustained PD was larger among participants who were assigned to the demanding attention condition. Furthermore, ego-depletion effects were serially mediated by PD: an elevated PD response emerged rapidly among the experimental group during the manipulation, persisted as an elevated baseline response during the Stroop task, and predicted worse accuracy on incongruent trials, revealing a potential indirect pathway to ego-depletion via sustained attention. Secondary analyses revealed another, independent and direct pathway via high levels of transient attentional control: participants who exhibited large phasic responses during the manipulation tended to perform worse on the subsequent Stroop task. We conclude by exploring the neuroscientific implications of these results within the context of current theories of self-control.

Abstract
We used pupillometry during a 2-back task to examine individual differences in the intensity and consistency of attention and their relative role in a working memory task. We used sensitivity, or the ability to distinguish targets (2-back matches) and nontargets, as the measure of task performance; task-evoked pupillary responses (TEPRs) as the measure of attentional intensity; and intraindividual pretrial pupil variability as the measure of attentional consistency. TEPRs were greater on target trials compared with nontarget trials, although there was no difference in TEPR magnitude when participants answered correctly or incorrectly to targets. Importantly, this effect interacted with performance: high performers showed a greater separation in their TEPRs between targets and nontargets, whereas there was little difference for low performers. Further, in regression analysis, larger TEPRs on target trials predicted better performance, whereas larger TEPRs on nontarget trials predicted worse performance. Sensitivity positively correlated with average pretrial pupil diameter and negatively correlated with intraindividual variability in pretrial pupil diameter. Overall, we found evidence that both attentional intensity (TEPRs) and consistency (pretrial pupil variation) predict performance on an n-back working memory task.

Abstract
The present study investigated whether the integration of separate parts into a whole-object representation varies with the amount of available attentional resources. To this end, two experiments were performed, which required observers to maintain central fixation while searching in peripheral vision for a target among various distractor configurations. The target could either be a "grouped" whole-object Kanizsa figure, or an "ungrouped" configuration of identical figural parts, but which do not support object completion processes to the same extent. In the experiments, accuracies and changes in pupil size were assessed, with the latter reflecting a marker of the covert allocation of attention in the periphery. Experiment 1 revealed a performance benefit for grouped (relative to ungrouped) targets, which increased with decreasing distance from fixation. By contrast, search for ungrouped targets was comparably poor in accuracy without revealing any eccentricity-dependent variation. Moreover, measures of pupillary dilation mirrored this eccentricity-dependent advantage in localizing grouped targets. Next, in Experiment 2, an additional attention-demanding foveal task was introduced in order to further reduce the availability of attentional resources for the peripheral detection task. This additional task hampered performance overall, alongside with corresponding pupil size changes. However, there was still a substantial benefit for grouped over ungrouped targets in both the behavioral and the pupillometric data. This shows that perceptual grouping scales with the allocation of attention even when only residual attentional resources are available to trigger the representation of a complete (target) object, thus illustrating that object completion operates in the "near absence" of attention.

Abstract
First experiences with rhythm occur in the womb, with different rhythmic sources being available to the human fetus. Among sensory modalities, vestibular, tactile, and somatosensory perception plays a crucial role in early processing. However, a limited number of studies so far have specifically focused on VTS rhythms in language development. The present work investigated VTS rhythmic abilities and their role in language acquisition through two experiments with 45 infants (21 females, sex assigned at birth; M age = 661.6 days, SD = 192.6) with middle/high socioeconomic status. Specifically, 37 infants from the original sample completed Experiment 1, assessing VTS rhythmic abilities through a vibrotactile tool for music perception. In Experiment 2, linguistic abilities were evaluated in 40 participants from the same cohort, specifically testing phonological and prosodic processing. Discrimination abilities for rhythmic and linguistic stimuli were inferred from changes in pupil diameter to contingent visual stimuli over time, through a Tobii X-60 eye-tracker. The predictive effect of VTS rhythmic abilities on linguistic processing and the developmental changes occurring across ages were explored in the 32 infants who completed both Experiments 1 and 2 by means of generalized, additive and linear, mixed-effect models. Results are discussed in terms of cross-sensory (i.e., haptic to hearing) and cross-domain (i.e., music to language) effects of rhythm on language acquisition, with implications for typical and atypical development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noninvasive neuromonitoring in critically ill children includes multiple modalities that all intend to improve our understanding of acute and ongoing brain injury. METHODS In this article, we review basic methods and devices, applications in clinical care and research, and explore potential future directions for three noninvasive neuromonitoring modalities in the pediatric intensive care unit: automated pupillometry, near-infrared spectroscopy, and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. RESULTS All three technologies are noninvasive, portable, and easily repeatable to allow for serial measurements and trending of data over time. However, a paucity of high-quality data supporting the clinical utility of any of these technologies in critically ill children is currently a major limitation to their widespread application in the pediatric intensive care unit. CONCLUSIONS Future prospective multicenter work addressing major knowledge gaps is necessary to advance the field of pediatric noninvasive neuromonitoring.

Abstract
In the typical Stroop task, participants are presented with color words written in different ink colors and are asked to respond to their color. It has been suggested that the Stroop task consists of two main conflicts: information conflict (color vs. word naming) and task conflict (respond to color vs. read the word). In the current study, we developed a novel task that includes both Response trials (i.e., trials in which a response is required) and Rest trials (i.e., trials in which no response is required or available) and investigated the existence of both information and task conflicts in Rest trials. We found evidence for task conflict in Response and also in Rest trials, while evidence for information conflict was only observed in Response trials. These results are in line with a model of task conflict that occurs independently of and prior to information conflict in the Stroop task.

Abstract
PURPOSE This pilot study aimed to determine the capacity of automated infrared pupillometry (AIP) alone and in combination with transcranial doppler (TCD) on admission to rule out need for intense neuroAQ2 critical care (INCC) in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS In this observational pilot study clinicians performed AIP and TCD measurements on admission in blunt TBI patients with a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) < 9 and/or motor score < 6. A Neurological Pupil index (NPi) < 3, Pulsatility Index (PI) > 1,4 or diastolic blood flow velocity (dV) of < 20 cm/s were used to rule out the need for INCC (exceeding the tier 0 Seattle Consensus Conference). The primary outcome was the negative likelihood ratio (nLR) of NPi < 3 alone or in combination with TCD to detect need for INCC. RESULTS A total of 69 TBI patients were included from May 2019 to September 2020. Of those, 52/69 (75%) median age was 45 [28-67], median prehospital GCS of 7 [5-8], median Injury Severity Scale of 13.0 [6.5-25.5], median Marshall Score of 4 [3-5], the median Glasgow Outcome Scale at discharge was 3 [1-5]. NPi < 3 was an independent predictor of INCC. NPi demonstrated a nLR of 0,6 (95%CI 0.4-0.9; AUROC, 0.65, 95% CI 0.51-0.79), a combination of NPi and TCD showed a nLR of 0.6 (95% CI 0.4-1.0; AUROC 0.67 95% CI 0.52-0.83) to predict INCC. CONCLUSION This pilot study suggests a possible useful contribution of NPi to determine the need for INCC in severe blunt TBI patients on admission.

Abstract
Not only is visual attention shifted to objects in the external world, attention can also be directed to objects in memory. We have recently shown that pupil size indexes how strongly items are attended externally, which was reflected in more precise encoding into visual working memory. Using a retro-cuing paradigm, we here replicated this finding by showing that stronger pupil constrictions during encoding were reflective of the depth of encoding. Importantly, we extend this previous work by showing that pupil size also revealed the intensity of internal attention toward content stored in visual working memory. Specifically, pupil dilation during the prioritization of one among multiple internally stored representations predicted the precision of the prioritized item. Furthermore, the dynamics of the pupillary responses revealed that the intensity of internal and external attention independently determined the precision of internalized visual representations. Our results show that both internal and external attention are not all-or-none processes, but should rather be thought of as continuous resources that can be deployed at varying intensities. The employed pupillometric approach allows to unravel the intricate interplay between internal and external attention and their effects on visual working memory.

Abstract
The use of health information systems (HIS) can result in high workloads and, consequently, poor performance characterized by e.g. increased occurrence of errors among clinicians. Pupillometry offers a good possibility to measure mental workload in a dynamic work setting. Currently, there is a lack of empirical research in the context of healthcare settings. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine whether specific eye movement measures are suitable for measuring mental workload in the healthcare setting, especially when working with HIS. 49 persons participated in our simulation-lab study. They had to complete a system-related task as well as an increasing n-back task. Both tasks were modified regarding task difficulty. Results show significant differences for objective and subjective workload measures between increasing task levels. There are also hints for an overload/fatigue indicator in pupil data. Our results are limited in terms of external validity, causality and effects. Future work should focus on high-fidelity simulations and less time-consuming analysis approaches.

Abstract
Introduction Given the traffic safety and occupational injury prevention implications associated with cannabis impairment, there is a need for objective and validated measures of recent cannabis use. Pupillary light response may offer an approach for detection. Method Eighty-four participants (mean age: 32, 42% female) with daily, occasional, and no-use cannabis use histories participated in pupillary light response tests before and after smoking cannabis ad libitum or relaxing for 15 min (no use). The impact of recent cannabis consumption on trajectories of the pupillary light response was modeled using functional data analysis tools. Logistic regression models for detecting recent cannabis use were compared, and average pupil trajectories across cannabis use groups and times since light test administration were estimated. Results Models revealed small, significant differences in pupil response to light after cannabis use comparing the occasional use group to the no-use control group, and similar statistically significant differences in pupil response patterns comparing the daily use group to the no-use comparison group. Trajectories of pupillary light response estimated using functional data analysis found that acute cannabis smoking was associated with less initial and sustained pupil constriction compared to no cannabis smoking. Conclusion These analyses show the promise of pairing pupillary light response and functional data analysis methods to assess recent cannabis use.

Abstract
This study investigated whether there are aging-related differences in pupil dilation (pupillometry) while the cognitive load is manipulated using digit- and word-span tasks. A group of 17 younger and 15 cognitively healthy older adults performed digit- and word-span tasks. Each task comprised three levels of cognitive loads with 10 trials for each level. For each task, the recall accuracy and the slope of pupil dilation were calculated and analyzed. The raw signal of measured pupil size was low-pass filtered and interpolated to eliminate blinking artifacts and spike noises. Two-way ANOVA was used for statistical analyses. For the recall accuracy, the significant group differences emerged as the span increases in digit-span (5- vs. 7-digit) and word-span (4- vs. 5-word) tasks, while the group differences were not significant on 3-digit- and 3-word-span tasks with lower cognitive load. In digit-span tasks, there was no aging-related difference in the slope of pupil dilation. However, in word-span tasks, the slope of pupil dilation differed significantly between two groups as cognitive load increased, indicating that older adults presented a higher pupil dilation slope than younger adults especially under the conditions with higher cognitive load. The current study found significant aging effects in the pupil dilations under the more cognitive demanding span tasks when the types of span tasks varied (e.g., digit vs. word). The manipulations successfully elicited differential aging effects, given that the aging effects became most salient under word-span tasks with greater cognitive load especially under the maximum length. Abstract
A growing literature suggests that preverbal infants are sensitive to sociomoral scenes and prefer prosocial agents over antisocial agents. It remains unclear, however, whether and how emotional processes are implicated in infants' responses to prosocial/antisocial actions. Although a recent study found that infants and toddlers showed more positive facial expressions after viewing helping (vs. hindering) events, these findings were based on naïve coder ratings of facial activity; furthermore, effect sizes were small. The current studies examined 18- and 24-month-old toddlers' real-time reactivity to helping and hindering interactions using three physiological measures of emotion-related processes. At 18 months, activity in facial musculature involved in smiling/frowning was explored via facial electromyography (EMG). At 24 months, stress (sweat) was explored via electrodermal activity (EDA). At both ages, arousal was explored via pupillometry. Behaviorally, infants showed no preferences for the helper over the hinderer across age groups. EMG analyses revealed that 18-month-olds showed higher corrugator activity (more frowning) during hindering (vs. helping) actions, followed by lower corrugator activity (less frowning) after hindering (vs. helping) actions finished. These findings suggest that antisocial actions elicited negativity, perhaps followed by brief disengagement. EDA analyses revealed no significant event-related differences. Pupillometry analyses revealed that both 18- and 24-month-olds' pupils were smaller after viewing hindering (vs. helping), replicating recent evidence with 5-month-olds and suggesting that toddlers also show less arousal following hindering than following helping. Together, these results provide new evidence with respect to whether and how arousal/affective processes are involved when infants process sociomoral scenarios.

Abstract
Physical exercise has positive impacts on hippocampal memory decline with aging. One of the postulated neurobiological mechanisms of the decline is reduced catecholaminergic projections from the locus coeruleus to the hippocampus. Recent human studies revealed that very light exercise rapidly enhances memory and pupil diameter, which suggests that light exercise may improve memory via neural circuits involved in the ascending arousal system, including the locus coeruleus, even in older adults. Thus, we aimed to clarify the effects of a single bout of light-intensity exercise (60% ventilatory threshold) on mnemonic discrimination performance, an index of hippocampal memory function, in healthy older adults using a randomized crossover design. Pupil diameter was measured during exercise as a physiological marker of the ascending arousal system. Discrimination of highly similar stimuli to the targets improved after exercise when compared to the resting control performance. Importantly, causal mediation analysis showed that pupil dilation during exercise mediated the memory improvement. These results suggest that brief light exercise rapidly enhances memory, possibly by upregulating the ascending arousal system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alcohol use disorder (AUD) belongs to the most burdensome clinical disorders worldwide. Current treatment approaches yield unsatisfactory long-term effects with relapse rates up to 85%. Craving for alcohol is a major predictor for relapse and can be intentionally induced via cue exposure in real life as well as in Virtual Reality (VR). The induction and habituation of craving via conditioned cues as well as extinction learning is used in Cue Exposure Therapy (CET), a long-known but rarely used strategy in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) of AUD. VR scenarios with alcohol related cues offer several advantages over real life scenarios and are within the focus of current efforts to develop new treatment options. As a first step, we aim to analyze if the VR scenarios elicit a transient change in craving levels and if this is measurable via subjective and psychophysiological parameters. METHODS A single-arm clinical study will be conducted including n = 60 patients with AUD. Data on severity of AUD and craving, comorbidities, demographics, side effects and the feeling of presence in VR will be assessed. Patients will use a head-mounted display (HMD) to immerse themselves into three different scenarios (neutral vs. two target situations: a living room and a bar) while heart rate, heart rate variability, pupillometry and electrodermal activity will be measured continuously. Subjective craving levels will be assessed before, during and after the VR session. DISCUSSION Results of this study will yield insight into the induction of alcohol craving in VR cue exposure paradigms and its measurement via subjective and psychophysiological parameters. This might be an important step in the development of innovative therapeutic approaches in the treatment of patients with AUD. TRIAL REGISTRATION This study was approved by the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin Institutional Review Board (EA1/190/22, 23.05.2023). It was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05861843).

Abstract
Insecure attachment is thought to impair romantic relationships, presumably also contributing to mental health problems. Previous research has suggested a link to biased automatic processing of social information, potentially reflected in pupil dilation responses. To address this hypothesis, 37 adults were presented with attachment-related, emotional pictures of erotic couples, everyday couples, or interpersonal violence after assessment with the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale. Considerable variation in self-reported attachment behaviors regarding both attachment anxiety and avoidance was observed in our sample. Overall, pupil dilation was most pronounced during viewing of erotica and violence-related pictures. Relative to nature pictures as control, attachment avoidance was associated with attenuated pupillary responses to social content. However, this was not significant with erotica. For pictures of violence, this avoidant bias was also evident in reduced subjective arousal. In contrast, attachment anxiety was unrelated to differential pupil dilation. Our findings, although preliminary, suggest that previous attachment-related experiences may bias the processing of social stimuli, which in turn may be reflected in altered patterns of pupillary responses.

Abstract
Visuospatial neglect is a frequent and disabling disorder, mostly after stroke, that presents in impaired awareness to stimuli on one side of space. Neglect causes disability and functional dependence, even long after the injury. Improving measurements of the core attentional deficit might hold the key for better understanding of the condition and development of treatment. We present a rapid, pupillometry-based method that assesses automatic biases in (covert) attention, without requiring behavioral responses. We exploit the phenomenon that pupil light responses scale with the degree of covert attention to stimuli, and thereby reveal what draws (no) attention. Participants with left-sided neglect after right-sided lesions following stroke (n = 5), participants with hemianopia/quadrantanopia following stroke (n = 11), and controls (n = 22) were presented with two vertical bars, one of which was white and one of which was black, while fixating the center. We varied which brightness was left and right, respectively across trials. In line with the hypotheses, participants with neglect demonstrated biased pupil light responses to the brightness on the right side. Participants with hemianopia showed similar biases to intact parts of the visual field, whilst controls exhibited no bias. Together, this demonstrates that the pupil light response can reveal not only visual, but also attentional deficits. Strikingly, our pupillometry-based bias estimates were not in agreement with neuropsychological paper-and-pencil assessments conducted on the same day, but were with those administered in an earlier phase post-stroke. Potentially, we pick up on persistent biases in the covert attentional system that participants increasingly compensate for in classical neuropsychological tasks and everyday life. The here proposed method may not only find clinical application, but also advance theory and aid the development of successful restoration therapies by introducing a precise, longitudinally valid, and objective measurement that might not be affected by compensation.

Abstract
In the present paper, we carry out a replication of a seminal paper by Kahneman, D. & Beatty, J. (1967). Perception & Psychophysics, 2(3),101-105 for using pupillometry as an implicit measure of auditory processing load, specifically, non-verbal auditory processing. While numerous papers since have supported the notion that pupillometry is a fairly reliable index of processing load in general (Zekveld, A. A., Koelewijn, T., and Kramer, S. E. (2018). Trends in Hearing, 22,1-25; Winn, M. B., Wendt, D., Koelewijn, T., and Kuchinsky, S. E. (2018). Trends in Hearing, 22,1-32), they typically have relied on memory recall, and/or more sophisticated cognitive tasks such as language comprehension or split attention. Kahneman and Beatty's paper, despite that it was published more than 50 years ago, continues to be the primary citation to support the claim that pupillometry is a reliable index of task difficulty for a simple non-verbal pitch discrimination task therefore giving us an implicit measure for listening effort (e.g.,Kramer, S. E., Lorens, A., Coninx, F., Zekveld, A. A., Piotrowska, A., & Skarzynski, H. (2013). Language and Cognitive Processes, 28(4),426-442; Schlemmer, K. B., Kulke, F., Kuchinke, L., & Van Der Meer, E. (2005). Psychophysiology, 42(4),465-472; Lisi, M., Bonato, M., and Zorzi, M. (2015). Biological Psychology, 112,39-45). This type of task takes very little explicit memory, is non-verbal, and relies heavily on more low-level, automatic perceptual processing. Using two different replication studies, one exact, and one modified, we only replicated the main result in the modified replication. The true replication failed to replicate on all nine statistical tests. Overall, our findings suggest that pupil dilation can be used as an implicit measure of task difficulty for a simple, non-semantic, auditory task, however, the robustness of the effect appears relatively weak in comparison with the original study, and the amount of variation across participants much greater.

Abstract
Cognitive pupillometry is the measurement of pupil size to investigate cognitive processes such as attention, mental effort, working memory, and many others. Currently, there is no commonly agreed-upon methodology for conducting cognitive-pupillometry experiments, and approaches vary widely between research groups and even between different experiments from the same group. This lack of consensus makes it difficult to know which factors to consider when conducting a cognitive-pupillometry experiment. Here we provide a comprehensive, hands-on guide to methods in cognitive pupillometry, with a focus on trial-based experiments in which the measure of interest is the task-evoked pupil response to a stimulus. We cover all methodological aspects of cognitive pupillometry: experimental design, preprocessing of pupil-size data, and statistical techniques to deal with multiple comparisons when testing pupil-size data. In addition, we provide code and toolboxes (in Python) for preprocessing and statistical analysis, and we illustrate all aspects of the proposed workflow through an example experiment and example scripts.

Abstract
Physical exercise, even stress-free very-light-intensity exercise such as yoga and very slow running, can have beneficial effects on executive function, possibly by potentiating prefrontal cortical activity. However, the exact mechanisms underlying this potentiation have not been identified. Evidence from studies using pupillometry demonstrates that pupil changes track the real-time dynamics of activity linked to arousal and attention, including neural circuits from the locus coeruleus to the cortex. This makes it possible to examine whether pupil-linked brain dynamics induced during very-light-intensity exercise mediate benefits to prefrontal executive function in healthy young adults. In this experiment, pupil diameter was measured during 10 min of very-light-intensity exercise (30% V˙o2peak). A Stroop task was used to assess executive function before and after exercise. Prefrontal cortical activation during the task was assessed using multichannel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We observed that very-light-intensity exercise significantly elicited pupil dilation, reduction of Stroop interference, and task-related left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation compared with the resting-control condition. The magnitude of change in pupil dilation predicted the magnitude of improvement in Stroop performance. In addition, causal mediation analysis showed that pupil dilation during very-light-intensity exercise robustly determined subsequent enhancement of Stroop performance. This finding supports our hypothesis that the pupil-linked mechanisms, which may be tied to locus coeruleus activation, are a potential mechanism by which very light exercise enhances prefrontal cortex activation and executive function. It also suggests that pupillometry may be a useful tool to interpret the beneficial impact of exercise on boosting cognition.

Abstract
Our visual experience often varies based on momentary thoughts and feelings. For example, when positive concepts are invoked, visual objects may appear brighter (e.g., a "brighter" smile). However, it remains unclear whether this phenomenological experience is driven by a genuine top-down modulation of brightness perception or by a mere response bias. To investigate this issue, we use pupillometry as a more objective measure of perceived brightness. We asked participants to judge the brightness level of an iso-luminant gray color patch after evaluating the valence of a positive or negative word. We found that the gray color patch elicited greater pupillary light reflex and more frequent "brighter" responses after observers had evaluated the valence of a positive word. As pupillary light reflex is unlikely driven by voluntary control, these results suggest that the conceptual association between affect and luminance can modulate brightness perception.

Abstract
Despite commonly investigated predictable smooth-pursuit neck-torsion tasks (SPNT) in neck pain patients, unpredictable conditions have been seldom investigated but are indicative of preserved oculomotor functions during neck torsion. Although not previously studied, some speculations about compensatory cognitive mechanisms such as increased phasic alertness during unpredictable tasks were suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate eye movement accuracy and pupillometric responses during predictable and unpredictable SPNT test in neck pain patients and asymptomatic controls. Eye movements (gain and SPNT-difference) and pupillometry indicative of tonic (average and relative pupil diameter) and phasic (index of cognitive activity-ICA) alertness were measured in 28 idiopathic neck pain patients and 30 asymptomatic individuals using infrared video-oculography during predictable and unpredictable SPNT test. Gain in unpredictable SPNT test was lower as compared to predictable tasks and presented with similar levels in neutral and neck torsion positions, but not in the predictable SPNT test. ICA was lower during neutral position in all tasks in patients as compared to control group but increased during neck torsion positions in unpredictable tasks. Relative pupil diameters presented with no differences between the groups or neck positions, but the opposite was observed for average pupil diameter. Higher ICA indicates an increase in phasic alertness in neck pain patients despite no alterations in oculomotor control during SPNT test. This is the first study to indicate cognitive deficits in oculomotor task in neck pain patients. The latter could negatively affect other tasks where additional cognitive resources must be involved.

Abstract
Ambiguous words can have related meanings (polysemes, e.g., newspaper) or unrelated meanings (homonyms, e.g., bat). Here we examined the processing of both types of ambiguous words (as well as unambiguous words) in tasks of increasing level of semantic engagement. Four experiments were conducted in which the degree of semantic engagement of the task was manipulated: lexical decision task (Experiments 1 and 2), semantic categorization task (Experiment 3) and number-of-meanings task (Experiment 4). RTs and pupillary response were recorded. To our knowledge, pupillary response had never been used before to study ambiguous words processing in isolation. Results showed faster RTs for ambiguous words with respect to unambiguous words in LDT, and larger pupil dilation was observed for ambiguous words in comparison to unambiguous ones in number-of-meanings task. However, differences between polysemes and homonyms were not observed in any task. These results provide no evidence that polysemes and homonyms are processed differently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been tested as a potential treatment for pharmaco-resistant epilepsy and depression. Its clinical efficacy is thought to depend on taVNS-induced activation of the locus coeruleus and other neuromodulator systems. However, unlike for invasive VNS in rodents, there is little evidence for an effect of taVNS on noradrenergic activity. OBJECTIVE We attempted to replicate recently published findings by Sharon et al. (2021), showing that short bursts of taVNS transiently increased pupil size and decreased EEG alpha power, two correlates of central noradrenergic activity. METHODS Following the original study, we used a single-blind, sham-controlled, randomized cross-over design. Human volunteers (n = 29) received short-term (3.4 s) taVNS at the maximum level below the pain threshold, while we collected resting-state pupil-size and EEG data. To analyze the data, we used scripts provided by Sharon and colleagues. RESULTS Consistent with Sharon et al. (2021), pupil dilation was significantly larger during taVNS than during sham stimulation (p = .009; Bayes factor supporting the difference = 7.45). However, we failed to replicate the effect of taVNS on EEG alpha power (p = .37); the data were four times more likely under the null hypothesis (BF10 = 0.28). CONCLUSION Our findings support the effectiveness of short-term taVNS in inducing transient pupil dilation, a correlate of phasic noradrenergic activity. However, we failed to replicate the recent finding by Sharon et al. (2021) that taVNS attenuates EEG alpha activity. Overall, this study highlights the need for continued research on the neural mechanisms underlying taVNS efficacy and its potential as a treatment option for pharmaco-resistant conditions. It also highlights the need for direct replications of influential taVNS studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study evaluated auditory-perceptual judgments of perceived vocal roughness (VR) and listening effort (LE) along with pupillometric responses in response to speech samples produced by tracheoesophageal (TE) talkers. METHODS Twenty normal-hearing, naive young adults (eight men and twelve women) served as listeners. Listeners were divided into two groups: (1) a with-anchor (WA) group (four men and six women) and (2) a no-anchor (NA) group (four men and six women). All were presented with speech samples produced by twenty TE talkers; listeners evaluated two auditory-perceptual dimensions-VR and LE-using visual analog scales. Anchors were provided to the WA group as an external referent for their ratings. In addition, during the auditory-perceptual task, each listener's pupil reactions also were recorded with peak pupil dilation (PPD) measures extracted as a physiologic indicator associated with the listening task. RESULTS High interrater reliability was obtained for both the WA and NA groups. High correlations also were observed between auditory-perceptual ratings of roughness and LE, and between PPD values and ratings of both dimensions for the WA group. The inclusion of an anchor during the auditory-perceptual task improved interrater reliability ratings, but it also imposed an increased demand on listeners. CONCLUSIONS Data obtained offer insights into the relationship between subjective indices of voice quality (ie, auditory-perceptual evaluation) and physiologic responses (PPD) to the abnormal voice quality that characterizes TE talkers. Furthermore, these data provide information on the inclusion/exclusion of audio anchors and potential increases in listener demand in response to abnormal voice quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurocognitive functioning is a relevant transdiagnostic dimension in psychiatry. As pupil size dynamics track cognitive load during a working memory task, we aimed to explore if this parameter allows identification of psychophysiological subtypes in healthy participants and patients with affective and anxiety disorders. METHODS Our sample consisted of 226 participants who completed the n-back task during simultaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging and pupillometry measurements. We used latent class growth modeling to identify clusters based on pupil size in response to cognitive load. In a second step, these clusters were compared on affective and anxiety symptom levels, performance in neurocognitive tests, and functional magnetic resonance imaging activity. RESULTS The clustering analysis resulted in two distinct pupil response profiles: one with a stepwise increasing pupil size with increasing cognitive load (reactive group) and one with a constant pupil size across conditions (nonreactive group). A larger increase in pupil size was significantly associated with better performance in neurocognitive tests in executive functioning and sustained attention. Statistical maps of parametric modulation of pupil size during the n-back task showed the frontoparietal network in the positive contrast and the default mode network in the negative contrast. The pupil response profile of the reactive group was associated with more thalamic activity, likely reflecting better arousal upregulation and less deactivation of the limbic system. CONCLUSIONS Pupil measurements have the potential to serve as a highly sensitive psychophysiological readout for detection of neurocognitive deficits in the core domain of executive functioning, adding to the development of valid transdiagnostic constructs in psychiatry.

Abstract
Aim Quantitative pupillometry is the guideline-recommended method for assessing pupillary light reflex for multimodal prognostication in comatose patients resuscitated from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, threshold values predicting an unfavorable outcome have been inconsistent across studies; therefore, we aimed to identify specific thresholds for all quantitative pupillometry parameters. Methods Comatose post-OHCA patients were consecutively admitted to the cardiac arrest center at Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet from April 2015 to June 2017. The parameters of quantitatively assessed pupillary light reflex (qPLR), Neurological Pupil index (NPi), average/max constriction velocity (CV/MCV), dilation velocity (DV), and latency of constriction (Lat) were recorded on the first three days after admission. We evaluated the prognostic performance and identified thresholds achieving zero percent false positive rate (0% PFR) for an unfavorable outcome of 90-day Cerebral Performance Category (CPC) 3-5. Treating physicians were blinded for pupillometry results. Results Of the 135 post-OHCA patients, the primary outcome occurred for 53 (39%) patients.On any day during hospitalization, a qPLR < 4%, NPi < 2.45, CV < 0.1 mm/s, and an MCV < 0.335 mm/s predicted 90-day unfavorable neurological outcome with 0% FPR (95%CI: 0-0%), with sensitivities of 28% (17-40%), 9% (2-19%), 13% (6-23%), and 17% (8-26%), respectively on day 1. Conclusion We found that specific thresholds of all quantitative pupillometry parameters, measured at any time following hospital admission until day 3, predicted a 90-day unfavorable outcome with 0% FPR in comatose patients resuscitated from OHCA. However, at 0% FPR, thresholds resulted in low sensitivity. These findings should be further validated in larger multicenter clinical trials.

Abstract
Autism has been linked to atypicalities in reward processing, especially in the social domain. However, results are heterogeneous, and their interpretation is hindered by the use of personally non-relevant social rewards. In this study we investigated behavioural (reaction times), neuronal (event-related potentials), and autonomic (pupil sizes) responses to personally relevant social rewards, money, and neutral outcomes in 26 autistic and 53 non-autistic subjects varying in levels of autistic traits. As hypothesised and preregistered, autism and autistic traits did not differently influence responses to social, monetary, or neutral outcomes on either response level. While groups did not differ in behaviour (reaction times), autism was linked to generally enhanced brain responses in early anticipation and larger pupil constrictions in reward reception. Together, these results suggest that when using personally relevant stimuli, autism is linked to generally preserved, although less neuronally efficient processing of rewards. Considering the role of social relevance in reward processing, we propose an interpretation of contradictory evidence from clinical practice and empirical research.

Abstract
We aim to investigate early developmental trajectories of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) as indexed by the pupillary light reflex (PLR) in infants with (i.e. preterm birth, feeding difficulties, or siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder) and without (controls) increased likelihood for atypical ANS development. We used eye-tracking to capture the PLR in 216 infants in a longitudinal follow-up study spanning 5 to 24 months of age, and linear mixed models to investigate effects of age and group on three PLR parameters: baseline pupil diameter, latency to constriction and relative constriction amplitude. An increase with age was found in baseline pupil diameter (F(3,273.21) = 13.15, p < 0.001, [Formula: see text] = 0.13), latency to constriction (F(3,326.41) = 3.84, p = 0.010, [Formula: see text] = 0.03) and relative constriction amplitude(F(3,282.53) = 3.70, p = 0.012, [Formula: see text] = 0.04). Group differences were found for baseline pupil diameter (F(3,235.91) = 9.40, p < 0.001, [Formula: see text] = 0.11), with larger diameter in preterms and siblings than in controls, and for latency to constriction (F(3,237.10) = 3.48, p = 0.017, [Formula: see text] = 0.04), with preterms having a longer latency than controls. The results align with previous evidence, with development over time that could be explained by ANS maturation. To better understand the cause of the group differences, further research in a larger sample is necessary, combining pupillometry with other measures to further validate its value.

Abstract
The current set of studies examined the relationship among working memory capacity, attention control, fluid intelligence, and pupillary correlates of tonic arousal regulation and phasic responsiveness in a combined sample of more than 1,000 participants in two different age ranges (young adults and adolescents). Each study was designed to test predictions made by two recent theories regarding the role of the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system in determining individual differences in cognitive ability. The first theory, proposed by Unsworth and Robison (2017a), posits two important individual differences: the moment-to-moment regulation of tonic arousal, and the phasic responsiveness of the system to goal-relevant stimuli. The second theory, proposed by Tsukahara and Engle (2021a), argues that people with higher cognitive abilities have greater functional connectivity between the LC-NE system and cortical networks at rest. These two theories are not mutually exclusive, but they make different predictions. Overall, we found no evidence consistent with a resting-state theory. However, phasic responsiveness was consistently correlated with working memory capacity, attention control, and fluid intelligence, supporting a prediction made by Unsworth and Robison (2017a). Tonic arousal regulation was not correlated with working memory or fluid intelligence and was inconsistently correlated with attention control, which offers only partial support for Unsworth and Robison's (2017a) second prediction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy, remaining asymptomatic for a long time, which makes its early diagnosis difficult. Visual field testing is still the gold standard but is less than ideal. The goal of this study is to assess a pupillometric test, administered passively to the subject for one minute, to measure its sensitivity and specificity in the classification of healthy eyes and glaucomatous eyes, and to evaluate its tolerability compared to visual field testing. METHODS Forty-five participants were included in this single-center, interventional, prospective study. They underwent 3 monocular pupillometric tests with light stimulation: 6 pupillary responses were recorded during full-field multifocal stimulation (performed twice) and pupillary hippus cycle study. RESULTS Analysis of spectral power and pupillary measurements with full-field multifocal stimulation provides a 0.94 sensitivity and a 0.88 specificity, a virtually perfect discrimination for early stages of glaucoma. Analysis of pupil cycle time provides a 0.92 sensitivity and a 0.88 specificity for early stages. Acceptability of this test by patients is superior to visual field testing. CONCLUSION These results show that data from our pupillometric recordings provide a good classification of healthy and glaucomatous eyes and must be confirmed on a larger population.

Abstract
The ability to store, retrieve, and extinguish memories of adverse experiences is an essential skill for animals' survival. The cellular and molecular factors that underlie such processes are only partially known. Using chondroitinase ABC treatment targeting chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs), previous studies showed that the maturation of the extracellular matrix makes fear memory resistant to deletion. Mice lacking the cartilage link protein Crtl1 (Crtl1-KO mice) display normal CSPG levels but impaired CSPG condensation in perineuronal nets (PNNs). Thus, we asked whether the presence of PNNs in the adult brain is responsible for the appearance of persistent fear memories by investigating fear extinction in Crtl1-KO mice. We found that mutant mice displayed fear memory erasure after an extinction protocol as revealed by analysis of freezing and pupil dynamics. Fear memory erasure did not depend on passive loss of retention; moreover, we demonstrated that, after extinction training, conditioned Crtl1-KO mice display no neural activation in the amygdala (Zif268 staining) in comparison to control animals. Taken together, our findings suggest that the aggregation of CSPGs into PNNs regulates the boundaries of the critical period for fear extinction.

Abstract
This prospective observational study included 80 adults (>18 years) patients admitted to the intensive care unit who were unconscious (Glasgow Coma Scale [GCS] score <9 with a motor response <5) and receiving mechanical ventilation. A tetanic stimulation was used to assess nociception; automated pupillometry (Algiscan, ID-MED, France) was used to compute the pupillary pain index score (PPI), with a PPI > 4 considered as nociception. Concomitantly, the number of skin conductance fluctuations (NSCF) per second, measured using a Skin Conductance Algesimeter (SCA, MEDSTORM Innovation AS, Norway; > 0.27 fluctuations/sec indicating nociception), and the instantaneous Analgesia Nociception Index (iANI, MDoloris Medical Systems, France; <50 indicating nociception) were collected. Tetanic stimulation resulted in a median pupillary dilation of 16 [6-25]% and a PPI of 5 [2-7]. According to the PPI assessment, 44 patients (55%) had nociception, whereas 23 (29%) and 18 (23%) showed nociception according to the algesimeter and iANI assessment, respectively. No significant changes in measured physiologic variables were observed after the tetanic stimulation. There were no correlations between PPI, post-stimulation iANI, and SCA-derived variables. There were no differences in PPI, iANI, and SCA variables in patients with low and normal baseline EEG power at baseline. PERSPECTIVES: Detection of nociception varies across different devices in unconscious critically ill patients. Further studies are required to understand which method to implement for analgesic administration in this patient population.

Abstract
Aberrant belief updating due to misestimation of uncertainty and an increased perception of the world as volatile (i.e., unstable) has been found in autism and psychotic disorders. Pupil dilation tracks events that warrant belief updating, likely reflecting the adjustment of neural gain. However, whether subclinical autistic or psychotic symptoms affect this adjustment and how they relate to learning in volatile environments remains to be unraveled. We investigated the relationship between behavioral and pupillometric markers of subjective volatility (i.e., experience of the world as unstable), autistic traits, and psychotic-like experiences in 52 neurotypical adults with a probabilistic reversal learning task. Computational modeling revealed that participants with higher psychotic-like experience scores overestimated volatility in low-volatile task periods. This was not the case for participants scoring high on autistic-like traits, who instead showed a diminished adaptation of choice-switching behavior in response to risk. Pupillometric data indicated that individuals with higher autistic- or psychotic-like trait and experience scores differentiated less between events that warrant belief updating and those that do not when volatility was high. These findings are in line with misestimation of uncertainty accounts of psychosis and autism spectrum disorders and indicate that aberrancies are already present at the subclinical level.

Abstract
A prospective study was performed on hospitalized conscious dogs. The objectives were: 1) to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of portable infrared pupillometry using a measure of photo light reflexes, 2) to identify parameters influencing measures, and 3) to compare parameters before and after the administration of analgesia. Twenty-nine dogs were included. Pupillometry was feasible by a single person. There was an excellent reliability for the evaluation of pupil diameter. There was poor to good reliability for the other parameters. There was an association between weight and mean pupil diameter (estimate = 0.1 mm, CI95 = [0.0; 0.1], P = 0.02), mean diameter variation (estimate = 0.2%, CI95 = [0.0; 0.4], P = 0.01), and mean velocity (estimate = 0.08 ms, CI95 = [0.03; 0.13], P = 0.002). Male dogs had a significantly larger mean pupil diameter than females (estimate = 1.3 mm, CI95 = [0.1; 2.5], P = 0.03). Independently of weight and sex, there was an association between mean pupil diameter and pain score: the higher the pain score, the lower the mean pupil diameter. There was a correlation between mean pupil diameter and morphine dose (ρ = -0.78, P = 0.0004). There was no significant difference in pupil diameter, velocity, and latency before and after analgesic administration. In conclusion, results do not support the use of PLR measurement by pupillometry as a pain assessment technique in hospitalized conscious dogs.

Abstract
Elaborative affective processing is observed in depression, and pupillary reactivity, a continuous, sensitive, and reliable indicator of physiological arousal and neurocognitive processing, is increasingly utilized in studies of depression-related characteristics. As a first attempt to quantitively summarize existing evidence on depression-related pupillary reactivity alterations, this review and meta-analysis evaluated the direction, magnitude, and specificity of pupillary indices of affective processing towards positively, negatively, and neutrally-valenced stimuli among individuals diagnosed with depression or with elevated risk of depression. Studies on pupillary responses to affective stimuli in the target groups were identified in PsycINFO and PubMed databases. Twenty-two articles met inclusion criteria for the qualitative review and 16 for the quantitative review. Three-level frequentist and Bayesian models were applied to summarize pooled effects from baseline-controlled stimuli-induced average changes in pupillary responses. In general, compared to non-depressed individuals, individuals with depression or elevated risk of depression exhibited higher pupillary reactivity (d =0.15) towards negatively-valenced stimuli during affective processing. Pupillary motility towards negatively-valenced stimuli may be a promising trait-like marker for depression vulnerability.

Abstract
According to the state regulation deficit (SRD) account, ADHD is associated with difficulties regulating tonic arousal levels, which may be due to inefficient effort allocation. We aimed to test the SRD account by using a target detection task with three different event rates (ER; 700 ms, 1800 ms, 6000 ms), in order to manipulate the tonic arousal state and its effects on performance and pupil indices in adults with high (n = 40) versus low (n = 36) ADHD symptom levels. In an additional condition, a fast ER (700 ms) was accompanied by auditory white noise (WN), to further increase tonic arousal level. The ER manipulation had a clear effect on RT and variability of RT. These effects were more pronounced for the high-ADHD group, especially for variability of RT with decreasing ER, suggestive of deficient upregulation of a tonic arousal state in that group, in line with their self-reported SRDs in daily life. Adding WN to the fast condition led to more errors, however similarly for both groups. Contrary to our predictions, the ER manipulation had no effect on tonic pupil size (as a measure of tonic arousal). Phasic pupil amplitude (as a measure of cognitive effort) linearly increased with decreasing ER, suggesting more effort allocation during slower ERs. WN decreased phasic pupil amplitude, but had no impact on tonic pupil size. Importantly, however, no ADHD-related differences were present for the pupil indices. In conclusion, adults with elevated levels of ADHD symptoms reported more SRDs in daily life and showed a performance pattern that suggests difficulties in upregulating but not downregulating the tonic arousal state. Surprisingly, these findings were not accompanied by group differences in pupillometric indices. This casts some doubts on the relationship between these measures of autonomic nervous system activity and state regulation, in particular in the context of ADHD symptomatology.
