Molecular epidemiology and genetic diversity of human astrovirus in South Korea from 2002 to 2007

The present study was conducted to survey the prevalence and genotypic distribution of human astrovirus (HAstV) circulating in South Korea. Of 160,027 patients with acute gastroenteritis, 2,057 (1.3%) were positive for HAstV antigen. We determined the genotypes of 187 HAstV strains collected from laboratories across the country. Genetic analysis revealed genotype 1 to be the most prevalent, accounting for 72.19% of the strains, followed by genotypes 8 (9.63%), 6 (6.95%), 4 (6.42%), 2 (3.21%) and 3 (1.60%). Our findings indicate that HAstV is less common but, even so, a potentially important viral agent of gastroenteritis in South Korea, with significant genetic diversity among circulating HAstV strains.

Search for production of heavy particles decaying to top quarks and invisible particles in pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV

We present a search for a new particle T' decaying to top quark via T' → t + X, where X is an invisible particle. In a data sample with 4.8  fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab in pp collisions with √s = 1.96  TeV, we search for pair production of T' in the lepton + jets channel, pp → tt + X + X → ℓνbqq'b + X + X. We interpret our results primarily in terms of a model where T' are exotic fourth generation quarks and X are dark matter particles. Current direct and indirect bounds on such exotic quarks restrict their masses to be between 300 and 600  GeV/c2, the dark matter particle mass being anywhere below m(T'). The data are consistent with standard model expectations, and we set 95% confidence level limits on the generic production of T'T' → tt + X + X. For the dark matter model we exclude T' at 95% confidence level up to m(T') = 360  GeV/c2 for m(X) ≤ 100  GeV/c2.

Cell encapsulation technology as a novel strategy for human anti-tumor immunotherapy

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) as an adjuvant in autologous cell-based anti-tumor immunotherapy has recently been approved for clinical application. To avoid the need for individualized processing of autologous cells, we developed a novel strategy based on the encapsulation of GM-CSF-secreting human allogeneic cells. GM-CSF-producing K562 cells showed high, stable and reproducible cytokine secretion when enclosed into macrocapsules. For clinical development, the cryopreservation of these devices is critical. Thawing of capsules frozen at different time points displayed differences in GM-CSF release shortly after thawing. However, similar secretion values to those of non-frozen control capsules were obtained 8 days after thawing at a rate of >1000 ng GM-CSF per capsule every 24 h. For future human application, longer and reinforced capsules were designed. After irradiation and cryopreservation, these capsules produced >300 ng GM-CSF per capsule every 24 h 1 week after thawing. The in vivo implantation of encapsulated K562 cells was evaluated in mice and showed preserved cell survival. Finally, as a proof of principle of biological activity, capsules containing B16-GM-CSF allogeneic cells implanted in mice induced a prompt inflammatory reaction. The ability to reliably achieve high adjuvant release using a standardized procedure may lead to a new clinical application of GM-CSF in cell-based cancer immunization.

Measurements of direct CP violating asymmetries in charmless decays of strange bottom mesons and bottom baryons

We report measurements of direct CP-violating asymmetries in charmless decays of neutral bottom hadrons to pairs of charged hadrons with the upgraded Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using a data sample corresponding to 1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we obtain the first measurements of direct CP violation in bottom strange mesons, A(CP)(B(s)(0)→K(-)π(+))=+0.39±0.15(stat)±0.08(syst), and bottom baryons, A(CP)(Λ(b)(0)→pπ(-))=+0.03±0.17(stat)±0.05(syst) and A(CP)(Λ(b)(0)→pK(-))=+0.37±0.17(stat)±0.03(syst). In addition, we measure CP violation in B(0)→K(+)π(-) decays with 3.5σ significance, A(CP)(B(0)→K(+)π(-))=-0.086±0.023(stat)±0.009(syst), in agreement with the current world average. Measurements of branching fractions of B(s)(0)→K(+)K(-) and B(0)→π(+)π(-) decays are also updated.

Scaling behaviors of the voltage distribution in dielectric breakdown networks

We study the distribution of voltage drops across bonds in dielectric breakdown networks and its qth moments in the two-dimensional Euclidean space. Performing numerical simulations, we find that the distribution is composed of three different power-law regimes which are distinguished by two crossover voltages V(1) and V(2). The scaling behaviors of these crossover voltages with respect to the system size govern those of the qth moments of the voltage distribution. This feature differs from the multifractal behavior of the qth moment in random resistor networks. We discuss the implications of these scaling behaviors in relation to the application of the dielectric breakdown network to memory devices.

Invariant mass distribution of jet pairs produced in association with a W boson in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

We report a study of the invariant mass distribution of jet pairs produced in association with a W boson using data collected with the CDF detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.3  fb(-1). The observed distribution has an excess in the 120-160  GeV/c(2) mass range which is not described by current theoretical predictions within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. In this Letter, we report studies of the properties of this excess.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in the B→K*μ(+)μ(-) decay and first observation of the B(s)0→ϕμ(+)μ(-) decay

We reconstruct the rare decays B(+)→K(+)μ(+0μ(-0, B90)→K*(892)(0)μ(+)μ(-), and B(s)(0)→ϕ(1020)μ(+)μ(-) in a data sample corresponding to 4.4  fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at √[s]=1.96  TeV by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron Collider. Using 121±16 B(+)→K(+)μ(+)μ(-) and 101±12 B(0)→K(*0)μ(+)μ(-) decays we report the branching ratios. In addition, we report the differential branching ratio and the muon forward-backward asymmetry in the B(+) and B(0) decay modes, and the K(*0) longitudinal polarization fraction in the B(0) decay mode with respect to the squared dimuon mass. These are consistent with the predictions, and most recent determinations from other experiments and of comparable accuracy. We also report the first observation of the B(s)(0)→ϕμ(+)μ(-) decay and measure its branching ratio BR(B(s)(0)→ϕμ(+)μ(-))=[1.44±0.33±0.46]×10(-6) using 27±6 signal events. This is currently the most rare B(s)(0) decay observed.

Measurement of the mass difference between t and t quarks

We present a direct measurement of the mass difference between t and t quarks using tt candidate events in the lepton+jets channel, collected with the CDF II detector at Fermilab's 1.96 TeV Tevatron pp Collider. We make an event by event estimate of the mass difference to construct templates for top quark pair signal events and background events. The resulting mass difference distribution of data is compared to templates of signals and background using a maximum likelihood fit. From a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6  fb(-1), we measure a mass difference, ΔM(top) = M(t) - M(t) = -3.3 ± 1.4(stat) ± 1.0(syst)  GeV/c2, approximately 2 standard deviations away from the CPT hypothesis of zero mass difference.

Search for heavy bottomlike quarks decaying to an electron or muon and jets in pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV

We report the most sensitive direct search for pair production of fourth-generation bottomlike chiral quarks (b') each decaying promptly to tW. We search for an excess of events with an electron or muon, at least five jets (one identified as due to a b or c quark), and an imbalance of transverse momentum by using data from pp collisions collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab with an integrated luminosity of 4.8  fb(-1). We observe events consistent with background expectation, calculate upper limits on the b' pair-production cross section (σ(bb')) ≲30  fb for m(b') > 375  GeV/c2), and exclude m(b') < 372  GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level assuming a 100% branching ratio of b' to tW.

Measurement of b hadron lifetimes in exclusive decays containing a J/ψ in pp collisions at √s=1.96 TeV

We report on a measurement of b-hadron lifetimes in the fully reconstructed decay modes B(+)→J/ψK(+), B⁰→J/ψK*(892)⁰, B⁰→J/ψK(s)⁰, and Λ(b)⁰→J/ψΛ⁰ using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.3 fb⁻¹, collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured lifetimes are τ(B(+))=[1.639±0.009(stat)±0.009(syst)] ps, τ(B⁰)=[1.507±0.010(stat)±0.008(syst)] ps, and τ(Λ(b)⁰)=[1.537±0.045(stat)±0.014(syst)] ps. The lifetime ratios are τ(B(+))/τ(B⁰)=[1.088±0.009(stat)±0.004(syst)] and τ(Λ(b)⁰)/τ(B⁰)=[1.020±0.030(stat)±0.008(syst)]. These are the most precise determinations of these quantities from a single experiment.

Search for high mass resonances decaying to muon pairs in √s=1.96 TeV pp collisions

We present a search for a new narrow, spin-1, high mass resonance decaying to μ(+)μ⁻+X, using a matrix-element-based likelihood and a simultaneous measurement of the resonance mass and production rate. In data with 4.6 fb⁻¹ of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF detector in pp collisions at √s=1960 GeV, the most likely signal cross section is consistent with zero at 16% confidence level. We therefore do not observe evidence for a high mass resonance and place limits on models predicting spin-1 resonances, including M>1071 GeV/c² at 95% confidence level for a Z' boson with the same couplings to fermions as the Z boson.

Comparison of the clinical efficacy of NBUVB and NBUVB with benzoyl peroxide/clindamycin in progressive macular hypomelanosis

BACKGROUND

Progressive macular hypomelanosis (PMH) is a skin disorder characterized by multiple hypopigmented patches symmetrically distributed on the trunk. Several treatment modalities have been attempted; however, a standard treatment modality has not been agreed to.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of antimicrobial therapy combined with narrow band ultraviolet B (NBUVB) with NBUVB monotherapy.

METHODS

A randomized left-right comparison study was conducted in a total of 10 patients. Patients received NBUVB therapy with daily application of antimicrobial gel on one side of the trunk (comb-NBUVB) and without it (mono-NBUVB) for 8 weeks. The clinical efficacy was determined by objective measurements using a colour analyser and subjective assessment by evaluating pictures taken with a digital camera at baseline, at the time of treatment cessation and 6 months after treatment.

RESULTS

Significant repigmentation was observed in all 10 patients during the 8 weeks of treatment. The mean difference in L values between lesional and non-lesional skin was reduced in the comb-NBUVB area (from 4.52 ± 1.65 to 0.94 ± 0.65), and in the mono-NBUVB area, (from 4.34 ± 1.39 to 1.18 ± 0.94). There was no significant difference between treated sites at both of the evaluation points in time. At 6 months after treatment, 7 of 10 patients completed the clinical trial, and some degree of clinical improvement remained in four of seven patients; recurrence occurred in the other patients.

CONCLUSIONS

Although recurrence occurred in some patients, NBUVB treatment appears to be a safe and useful modality for the treatment of PMH.

Selective activation of Akt1 by mammalian target of rapamycin complex 2 regulates cancer cell migration, invasion, and metastasis

Mammalian target of rapamycin complex (mTORC) regulates a variety of cellular responses including proliferation, growth, differentiation and cell migration. In this study, we show that mammalian target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2) regulates invasive cancer cell migration through selective activation of Akt1. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)-induced SKOV-3 cell migration was completely abolished by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) (LY294002, 10 μM) or Akt inhibitors (SH-5, 50 μM), whereas inhibition of extracellular-regulated kinase by an ERK inhibitor (PD98059, 10 μM) or inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) by an mTORC1 inhibitor (Rapamycin, 100 nM) did not affect IGF-1-induced SKOV-3 cell migration. Inactivation of mTORC2 by silencing Rapamycin-insensitive companion of mTOR (Rictor), abolished IGF-1-induced SKOV-3 cell migration as well as activation of Akt. However, inactivation of mTORC1 by silencing of Raptor had no effect. Silencing of Akt1 but not Akt2 attenuated IGF-1-induced SKOV-3 cell migration. Rictor was preferentially associated with Akt1 rather than Akt2, and over-expression of Rictor facilitated IGF-1-induced Akt1 activation. Expression of PIP3-dependent Rac exchanger1 (P-Rex1), a Rac guanosine exchange factor and a component of the mTOR complex, strongly stimulated activation of Akt1. Furthermore, knockdown of P-Rex1 attenuated Akt activation as well as IGF-1-induced SKOV-3 cell migration. Silencing of Akt1 or P-Rex1 abolished IGF-1-induced SKOV-3 cell invasion. Finally, silencing of Akt1 blocked in vivo metastasis, whereas silencing of Akt2 did not. Given these results, we suggest that selective activation of Akt1 through mTORC2 and P-Rex1 regulates cancer cell migration, invasion and metastasis.

Androgen receptor expression is significantly associated with better outcomes in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers

BACKGROUND

The objective of the study was to evaluate the implications of androgen receptor (AR) in breast cancers.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We investigated immunohistochemical AR expression from the tissue microarrays of 931 patients between 1999 and 2005, and analyzed demographics and outcomes using uni-/multivariate analyses. Tumors with ≥10% nuclear-stained cells were considered positive for AR.

RESULTS

AR was expressed in 58.1% of patients. AR was significantly related to older age at diagnosis, smaller size, well-differentiated tumors, higher positivity of hormone receptors, non-triple-negative breast cancers (non-TNBCs), and lower proliferative index. In estrogen receptor (ER)-negative tumors, AR was distinctively associated with human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER2) overexpression. With a mean follow-up of 72.7 months, AR was positively related to survival in ER-positive but not in ER-negative tumors. In Cox's models, AR was an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival in ER-positive cancers. Interestingly, molecular apocrine tumors (ER negative and AR positive) with HER2 positive status showed trends of poorer outcome, but AR had no impact on survival in patients with TNBC.

CONCLUSIONS

AR is significantly associated with favorable features in breast cancers and related to better outcomes in ER-positive not in ER-negative tumors. These results suggest that AR could be an additional marker for endocrine responsiveness in ER-positive cancers and a candidate for therapeutic targeting of ER-negative tumors.

Top quark mass measurement in the lepton + jets channel using a matrix element method and in situ jet energy calibration

A precision measurement of the top quark mass m(t) is obtained using a sample of tt events from pp collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF II detector. Selected events require an electron or muon, large missing transverse energy, and exactly four high-energy jets, at least one of which is tagged as coming from a b quark. A likelihood is calculated using a matrix element method with quasi-Monte Carlo integration taking into account finite detector resolution and jet mass effects. The event likelihood is a function of m(t) and a parameter Δ(JES) used to calibrate the jet energy scale in situ. Using a total of 1087 events in 5.6 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, a value of m(t)=173.0 ± 1.2 GeV/c(2) is measured.

Improved search for a Higgs boson produced in association with Z → l+ l- in pp collisions sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV

We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced with a Z boson in 4.1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electrons or muons, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section multiplied by the H → bb branching ratio. Improved analysis methods enhance signal sensitivity by 20% relative to previous searches. At a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV/c2 we set a limit of 5.9 times the standard model cross section.

Abstract P3-01-03: The Predictive Value of Serum Serum Her-2/neu for Response to Anthracycline-Based and Trastuzumab-Based Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy of Advanced Primary Breast Cancer

Background:There excists little information about a possible influence of serum Her-2/neu on response to chemotherapy. We aimed that the assessment of serum Her-2/neu in pretreatment serum sample can be useful in predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: All breast cancers were tested by immunohistochemical stain and FISH for Her-2/neu before treatment. Serum Her-2/neu was twice measured by Chemiluminescence immunoassay (ADVIA centaur®TMsystem) before neoadjuvant chemotherapy and before operation. The cutoff value was 10.2 mg/ml according to previous study. Pathologic complete response (pCR) was considered as no residual tumor or remnant ductal carcinoma in situ, partial response (PR) was less than 50% decrease in maximal diameter in pathologic tumor size.The measurements for the change of serum Her-2/neu were defined as pretreatment Her-2/neu — preoperation Her-2/neu. We compared the change of serum Her-2/neu between 1) before prechemotherapy and after chemotherapy 2) pathologic complete response and partial response 3) trastuzumab (H) group and anthracyline (A) group. Results: Serum Her-2/neu was decreased after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Mean of serum Her-2/neu in prechemotherapy was 15.4±9.0 ng/mL, that of postchemotherapy was 10.5± 2.0 ng/mL (p= 0.04). Pathologic response was correlated with the change of serum Her-2/neu (PR: 6.1 ng/ml vs. pCR: 42.0 ng/ml, p= 0.014). Serum Her-2/neu of trastuzumab group was more decreased than of anthracyline group (H=12.9 ± 14.5 ng/mL ; A= 2.2 ± 1.2 ng/mL; p=0.024). In trastuzumab group, pCR was boreline significantly correlated with change of serum Her-2/neu (PR: 0.8 ± 0.84 ng/ml vs. pCR: 21.1 ± 13.2 ng/ml, p= 0.08). Conclusions: Prechemotherapy serum Her-2/neu was to be a significant predictor of pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Serum Her-2/neu levels during treatment were associated with pathologic response in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy, particularly, in trastuzumab-based regimen. Serum Her-2/neu levels may serve to monitoring neoadjuvant therapy in Her-2/neu overexpressed breast cancer.

Abstract P3-10-03: The Implication of Androgen Receptor Expression in Breast Cancers

Purpose: To evaluate the implication of androgen receptor (AR) expression in patients with breast cancer.

Methods: Immunohistochemically AR expression was investigated in 931 invasive breast cancers prepared in tissue microarray blocks that were collected in between November 1999 and August 2005. The clinicopathological features, disease-free (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using chi-square test, Kaplan-Meier methods, and Cox's models. Tumors with ≥10% nuclear-stained cells were considered to be positive for AR, estrogen receptor (ER), and progesterone receptor (PR) expression and 3+ with immunohistochemical staing or FISH + were considered positive for HER2 expression.

Results: The positive expression of AR, ER, PR, and HER2 was 58.1%, 72.2%, 61.4%, and 24.7% of all patients, respectively. AR expression was significantly associated with an older age at diagnosis (p=0.007), smaller tumor size (P&lt;0.001), well differentiation (P&lt;0.001), higher hormone receptors expression (P&lt;0.001), non-triple-negative breast cancers (non-TNBC) (P&lt;0.001), and lower proliferation index (P&lt;0.001). In ER-negative cancers, AR expression was associated with well differentiation, lower Ki-67 index, and distinctively HER2 overexpression. With median follow-up duration of 72.7 months, AR was significantly associated with better DFS (p=0.023) and OS (p=0.048) and the association was same in ER-positive cancers but was disappeared in ER-negative cancers. In Cox's models, AR expression was an independent prognostic factor for DFS (hazard ratio, 0.654; p=0.049), but it did not reach a statistical significance for OS (hazard ratio, 0.647; p=0.119) even in ER-positive tumors. Interestingly, tumors with molecular apocrine features (ER-negative, AR-positive, and HER2-positive) showed a trend of poorer outcome with AR expression, but there was no impact of AR expression on the survival in 156 patients with TNBC.

Conclusions: AR expression is significantly associated with favorable clinicopathological features and better outcomes in ER-positive cancers but tumors with molecular apocrine features showed a trend of poorer outcome with AR expression. These results suggest that AR expression could be an additional marker for endocrine responsiveness in ER-positive tumors and a target molecule for the molecular apocrine tumors.

Abstract P4-08-05: Delineation of HER2 Gene Status in Korean Breast Cancers by Standardized Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Silver In Situ Hybridization (SISH): Comparison of Local IHC Result with Central IHC and SISH Results

Background: Amplification of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) gene and concomitant protein overexpression are present in 20-25% of breast cancers. HER2 overexpression and/or gene amplification is associated with a worse clinical outcome and an important predictive marker for sensitivity to anthracycline-based chemotherapy and HER2- targeted therapy. In Korea, the HER2 status has usually been assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in the laboratories. To verify the preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic factors of IHC in multi-institutions, we assessed the interlaboratory variability of HER2 IHC by comparing the local IHC with the central IHC and SISH results, as a first step toward building a nationwide quality assurance program.

Methods: The Breast Pathology Study Group of Korean Society of Pathologists collected 1,198 breast carcinoma samples from 7 university-based hospitals and constructed 56 tissue microarray (TMA) blocks with triplicate of 1 mm cores. Local IHC results for HER2 were obtained from 1,130 patients. We performed IHC (PATHWAY anti-HER2/neu (4B5) rabbit monoclonal antibody, Ventana Medical Systems) and SISH (INFORM HER2 DNA Probe Kit, Ventana Medical Systems) for HER2 on the TMA sections using the automated Benchmark platform (Ventana Medical Systems). We interpreted the results according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pathologists guidelines. Results from local IHC were compared with central IHC and SISH. The concordant rates between central IHC and SISH results were also calculated.

Results: The total percentage of cases in each category of local IHC score was: 0/1+, 70.4%; 2+, 8.8% (range among hospitals, 0-36%); and 3+, 20.8% (10.8-28.8%). The percentage of central IHC results (1,110 patients) in each category was: 0/1+, 79.7%; 2+, 3.6% (1.1-8.3%); and 3+, 16.7% (13.1-18.8%). SISH results were obtained from 1,033 patients: negative, 79.5%; equivocal, 0.2% (0-1.6%); and positive, 20.3% (19.2-22.6%). SISH amplifications in each local IHC category were observed as follows: 0/1+, 4.3% (0.6-10%); 2+, 18.8% (5.6-66.7%); and 3+, 71.2% (50-97.3%). When considering the central SISH as gold standard, 3% of cases (30/995) were false negative and 6.3% (63/995) were false positive in local IHC. In central lab, the concordance rates between IHC 3+ and SISH-positive, and IHC 0/1+ and SISH-negative were 95.5% and 98%, respectively.

Conclusions: The results of central IHC and SISH markedly decreased the interlaboratory variability of HER2 status. The measurement of HER2 gene amplification by SISH was less affected by the preanalytic factors than the measurement of overexpression of HER2 protein by IHC. Because the rate of false positivity is higher than that of false negativity in the local IHC, the quality assurance program needs to be focused on decreasing not only the false negativity, but also the false positivity of HER2 IHC in local laboratories

Abstract P2-02-10: Clinical Utility of MRI before Re-Lumpectomy in Breast Conserving Operation

Background: It was necessary to know the resection margin status for breast conserving operations after diagnostic excisional biopsies. The purposes of this study were to assess the accuracy of breast MRI in detecting residual tumor extent around excisional biopsy or mammotome biopsy sites with unknown resection margin status and evaluate the impact of MRI on surgical treatment planning for breast conserving operation. Material and Methods: Preoperative breast MRI was performed in 47 breast cancer patients who underwent mammotome biopsy and excisional biopsy with unknown resection margin status. All subjects underwent breast MRI and ultrasonography for extent of residual tumor, and were evaluated by experienced two diagnostic radiologists, followed by immediate curative operation. We investigated the correlation between radiologic and pathologic finding and the radiologic decision's effect on further surgical treatment. Results: 28 patients(59.6%) were taken by excisional biopsy, 13 patients by mammotome biopsy(27.7%), and 6 patients(12.8%) by lumpectomy. Twenty-five patients (53.1%) underwent re-lumpectomy, while 19 patients (40.4%) mastectomy, and 3 patients(6.3%) only sentinel lymph node biopsy. Residual tumor was present in 33 patients (70.3%) and multifocal breast cancer was found in 12 patients (25.5%). In terms of the accuracy of MRI in detecting residual tumor, the sensitivity was 63.6%, specificity was 45.5% and the positive predictive value was 77.7%. In that of ultrasonographies, the sensitivity was 52.3%, specificity was 88.8%, and the positive predictive value was 91.6%. Pathologic finding of residual tumor showed that ductal carcinoma in situ was most common (57.1%) in not only radiologic-pathologic concordant cases, but also in radioloigc-pathologic discordant cases (58.3%). But 5 patients (10.6%) with invasive ductal carcinoma in residual tumor were not detected by MRI. Positive predictive value was not associated with residual tumor sizes. The MR findings of residual tumor changed the next procedure from re-lumpectomy to mastectomy (10 patients), additional biopsy of suspicious lesion in ipsilateral breast (2 patients), and second-look ultrasonography (4 patients). Discussion: Preoperative MRI was not critical effect on evaluating the margin status around excisional biopsy sites. An important clinical role of

MRI is to identify a subset of patients with extensive residual or multifocal breast cancer who would be better served by undergoing mastectomy rather than breast conserving operation.

Direct top-quark width measurement at CDF

We present a measurement of the top-quark width in the lepton+jets decay channel of tt events produced in p p collisions at Fermilab's Tevatron collider and collected by the CDF II detector. From a data sample corresponding to 4.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we identify 756 candidate events. The top-quark mass and the mass of the hadronically decaying W boson that comes from the top-quark decay are reconstructed for each event and compared with templates of different top-quark widths (Γ(t)) and deviations from nominal jet energy scale (Δ(JES)) to perform a simultaneous fit for both parameters, where Δ(JES) is used for the in situ calibration of the jet energy scale. By applying a Feldman-Cousins approach, we establish an upper limit at 95% confidence level (CL) of Γ(t) <7.6 GeV and a two-sided 68% CL interval of 0.3 GeV <Γ(t) <4.4  GeV for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV/c(2), which are consistent with the standard model prediction.

Effect of probiotic-, bacteriophage-, or organic acid-supplemented feeds or fermented soybean meal on the growth performance, acute-phase response, and bacterial shedding of grower pigs challenged with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium

A 28-d experiment evaluated the growth performance, acute-phase response, and bacterial shedding patterns in pigs (n = 108; initially, 38.7 ± 6.7 kg) fed 6 treatment diets, including a control diet with no antimicrobial agents (CON), a positive control diet containing chlortetracycline, 100 mg/kg (CT), a diet containing anti-Salmonella Typhimurium bacteriophage, 3 × 10(9) plaque-forming units/kg of feed (ASB), Lactobacillus plantarum CJLP56, 6.5 × 10(8) cfu/kg of feed (LP), 0.2% microencapsulated organic acids (MOA), or 5% fermented soybean meal (FSM). Pigs were fed the diets for 2 wk before and 2 wk after challenging orally with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (SalT). Before bacterial challenge, ADFI was similar in all groups. After SalT challenge, ADFI of CON pigs was less (P < 0.05) than all other groups. Before challenge, pigs on MOA, FSM, and CT diets had greater (P < 0.05) ADG and G:F than CON pigs. After challenge (wk 3 to 4) and during the overall experimental period (wk 1 to 4), ADG of all treatment groups and G:F of all treatment groups except the LP group were greater (P < 0.05) than those of CON pigs. Relative to all other treatments, CON and LP pigs had greater (P < 0.05) bacterial shedding scores on d 7 after SalT challenge. At d 14 postchallenge, shedding scores declined (P < 0.05) in all treatment groups compared with CON pigs. Serum haptoglobin for all treatment groups increased from d 0 concentrations on d 6 postchallenge and declined to prechallenge concentrations on d 13 (P < 0.05). Circulating IGF-I concentrations declined from 2 to 6 d postchallenge and increased again by d 13 in ASB and LP groups, did not decline in FSM and CT groups, and continuously declined through d 13 in CON and LP groups (P < 0.05). However, in MOA group, IGF-I concentrations declined from preinfection concentrations on d 2, increased on d 4, and declined again until d 13 (P < 0.05). The serum concentrations of the cytokines IL-6 and IL-1β were not generally affected by SalT challenge. In conclusion, acute infection of growing pigs with SalT was associated with short-term febrile responses in most pigs and reductions in ADFI and ADG of CON pigs. Compared with the CON diet, ASB, FSM, and MOA diets had a similar benefit to the antibiotic-supplemented diet in improving the performance of growing pigs, especially after bacterial challenge. However, further work needs to be done to better understand their mode of action in this class of pigs.

Toll-like receptor 1 gene polymorphisms in childhood IgA nephropathy: a case-control study in the Korean population

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are innate immune mediators that stimulate nuclear factor kappa B and the inflammatory cytokines. TLR1 is expressed in renal tubular epithelial cells when the kidney is injured, but the role of TLR1 gene in glomerulonephritis has not been clearly elucidated. We aimed to investigate the association of TLR1 polymorphisms with immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) in children. One hundred and ninety pediatric patients with biopsy-proven IgAN and 283 healthy control subjects were enrolled. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms of TLR1 gene [rs4833095 (missense, Asn248Ser) and rs5743557 (promoter, -414C/T)] were selected and genotyped by direct sequencing. For rs4833095, the C/T genotype in the codominant model (vs. the T/T genotype) [odds ratio (OR) = 2.11, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.21-3.69, P = 0.009] and the genotype containing C allele (C/T and C/C) in the dominant model (vs. the T/T genotype) (OR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.16-3.34, P = 0.012) were associated with an increased risk of IgAN. For rs5743557, the T/T genotype in the codominant model (vs. the C/C genotype) (OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.02-2.96, P = 0.041) appeared to be associated with IgAN risk. In haplotype analysis, the CT haplotype revealed an association with IgAN (codominant model, OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.06-1.80, P = 0.017; dominant model, OR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.16-2.67, P = 0.008). After Bonferroni correction, the association of the genotypes of rs4833095 and the CT haplotype with IgAN risk remained significant. These findings suggest that TLR1 gene polymorphisms may affect IgAN susceptibility in Korean children.

Scaling theory for unipolar resistance switching

We investigate a reversible percolation system showing unipolar resistance switching in which percolating paths are created and broken alternately by the application of an electric bias. Owing to the dynamical changes in the percolating paths, different from those in classical percolating paths, a detailed understanding of the structure is demanding and challenging. Here, we develop a scaling theory that can explain the transport properties of these conducting paths; the theory is based on the fractal geometry of a percolating cluster. This theory predicts that two scaling behaviors emerge, depending on the topologies of the conducting paths. We confirm these theoretical predictions experimentally by observing material-independent universal scaling behaviors in unipolar resistance switching.

Search for R-parity violating decays of sneutrinos to eμ, μτ, and eτ pairs in pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV

We present a search for supersymmetric neutrino ν production using the Tevatron pp collision data collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb-1. We focus on the scenarios predicted by the R-parity violating (RPV) supersymmetric models in which sneutrinos decay to two charged leptons of different flavor. With the data consistent with the standard model expectations, we set upper limits on σ(pp→ν)×BR(ν→eμ,μτ,eτ) and use these results to constrain the RPV couplings as a function of the sneutrino mass.

Three phenotypes of obstructive lung disease in the elderly

SETTING

Eleven referring hospitals in South Korea.

OBJECTIVE

To classify the phenotypes in elderly subjects with obstructive lung disease (OLD).

METHODS

We analysed 191 subjects aged ≥ 60 years with chronic respiratory symptoms and either obstructive spirometry or bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Factor analysis was performed using commonly measured variables and revealed four significant variables: 1) the ratio of inspiratory capacity to total lung capacity, 2) the total score on the St George's Respiratory Questionnaire, 3) the volume fraction of the lung less than 950 Hounsfield Unit at full inspiration on volumetric computed tomography and 4) post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) changes. We performed a cluster analysis on these four variables.

RESULTS

The mean age was 68.5 (± 5.2 SD) years and the mean post-bronchodilator FEV(1) was 52.4% (± 16.5) predicted. Three clusters with the following phenotypes were identified: Cluster 1 included subjects with moderate to severe airflow obstruction and bronchodilator reversibility; Cluster 2 subjects had moderate airflow obstruction without bronchodilator reversibility, and Cluster 3 subjects had severe airflow obstruction without bronchodilator reversibility.

CONCLUSIONS

We identified three phenotypes in elderly subjects with OLD. Follow-up studies are needed to explore the clinical significance of each phenotype.

The relationship between stress positions and pain intensity in triangular fibrocartilage lesions

We investigated the relationship between stress applied in several positions of the wrist and pain intensity in triangular fibrocartilage lesions in sixty-one patients who were diagnosed as having triangular fibrocartilage lesions and had a wrist arthroscopy. Before arthroscopy, we stressed the wrist with an axial load applied in four different wrist positions, and the evoked pain was graded into four levels. The patients who had a triangular fibrocartilage lesion on arthroscopy were divided into those with a traumatic tear and those with degenerative changes. While hypersupination and extension of wrist position evoked the most severe pain in patients with a traumatic tear, the intensity of pain did not relate to wrist rotation in patients with degenerative changes.

Search for new physics with a dijet plus missing E(T) signature in pp collisions at √s=1.96 TeV

We present results of a signature-based search for new physics using a dijet plus missing transverse energy (E(T)) data sample collected in 2  fb⁻¹ of pp collisions at √s=1.96  TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe no significant event excess with respect to the standard model prediction and extract a 95% C.L. upper limit on the cross section times acceptance for a potential contribution from a nonstandard model process. The search is made by using novel, data-driven techniques for estimating backgrounds that are applicable to first searches at the LHC.

Radiological findings and clinical features of thoracic immunoglobulin G4-positive plasma cell granuloma: two cases

Plasma cell granulomas, inflammatory pseudotumours and myofibroblastomas are synonymous with characteristic plasma cell infiltration in various body organs including the pancreas, liver, retroperitoneum and mediastinal structures causing idiopathic fibrosclerosis. Recently, a new concept has arisen regarding the relationship between immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-positive cell infiltration and idiopathic systemic fibrosclerosis. We report two cases showing IgG4-positive cell infiltration in the lung presenting as lung nodules with or without extrapulmonary manifestations.

Exclusion of an exotic top quark with -4/3 electric charge using soft lepton tagging

We present a measurement of the electric charge of the top quark using pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.7 fb(-1) at the CDF II detector. We reconstruct tt events in the lepton + jets final state. We use soft lepton taggers to determine the flavor of the b jets, which we use to reconstruct the top quark's electric charge and exclude an exotic top quark with -4/3 charge at 95% confidence level. This is the strongest exclusion of the exotic charge scenario and the first to use soft leptons for this purpose.

Search for the production of scalar bottom quarks in pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV

We report on a search for direct scalar bottom quark (sbottom) pair production in pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV, in events with large missing transverse energy and two jets of hadrons in the final state, where at least one of the jets is required to be identified as originating from a b quark. The study uses a collider detector at Fermilab Run II data sample corresponding to 2.65 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. The data are in agreement with the standard model. In an R-parity conserving minimal supersymmetric scenario, and assuming that the sbottom decays exclusively into a bottom quark and a neutralino, 95% confidence-level upper limits on the sbottom pair production cross section of 0.1 pb are obtained. For neutralino masses below 70 GeV/c2, sbottom masses up to 230 GeV/c2 are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Optimal timing of G-CSF administration for effective autologous stem cell collection

The best time of G-CSF administration for PBPC collection remains to be defined. We aimed to identify optimal G-CSF administration timing for efficient autologous stem cell collection. A total of 262 lymphoma or multiple myeloma patients, who underwent PBPC collection from January 2000 to March 2008, were included. PBPCs were mobilized with chemotherapy followed by lenograstim at 10 μg/kg/day. Patients received lenograstim at 2000 hours, about half a day before leukapheresis (PM group) before November 2004, and at 0600 hours, 3 h before apheresis (AM group) subsequently. In the AM group, the median number of total collected CD34+ cells/kg was greater over a shorter duration of apheresis, and the median number of collected CD34+ cells/kg at first leukapheresis was larger. Stem cell collection efficacy (ratio of total collected CD34+ cells/kg per number of leukapheresis procedures) was higher, and proportion of patients who yielded an optimum harvest was larger. The statistically significant between-group difference was observed only in patients with high-dose CY chemotherapy for stem cell mobilization in subgroup analysis. The present study showed that G-CSF injection 3 h before apheresis improved the efficacy of autologous stem cell collection.

Measurement of W-boson polarization in Top-Quark Decay in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

We report measurements of the polarization of W bosons from top-quark decays using 2.7 fb{-1} of pp collisions collected by the CDF II detector. Assuming a top-quark mass of 175  GeV/c{2}, three measurements are performed. A simultaneous measurement of the fraction of longitudinal (f{0}) and right-handed (f{+}) W bosons yields the model-independent results f{0}=0.88±0.11(stat)±0.06(syst) and f{+}=-0.15±0.07(stat)±0.06(syst) with a correlation coefficient of -0.59. A measurement of f{0} [f{+}] constraining f{+} [f{0}] to its standard model value of 0.0 [0.7] yields f{0}=0.70±0.07(stat)±0.04(syst) [f{+}=-0.01±0.02(stat)±0.05(syst)]. All these results are consistent with standard model expectations. We achieve the single most precise measurements of f{0} for both the model-independent and model-dependent determinations.

Reversible loss of gravitropic sensitivity in maize roots after tip application of calcium chelators

The application of calcium chelating agents (EDTA or EGTA) to the tips of maize roots caused a loss of gravitropic sensitivity. When the chelator was replaced with calcium chloride, gravitropic sensitivity was restored. Asymmetric application of calcium chloride near the tip of a vertical root caused curvature toward the calcium source. When the calcium was applied to the upper surface of the tip of a root oriented horizontally, the root curved upward even though control roots exhibited strong downward curvature. Application of calcium chloride to the tips of decapped roots, which are known to be gravitropically insensitive, did not restore gravitropic sensitivity. However, asymmetric application of calcium chloride near the tips of decapped roots caused curvature toward the calcium source. Calcium may play a key role in linking gravity detection to gravitropic curvature in roots.

Measurement of the ratio σ{tt}/σ{Z/γ{*}→ll} and precise extraction of the tt cross section

We report a measurement of the ratio of the tt to Z/γ{*} production cross sections in sqrt[s]=1.96  TeV pp collisions using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 4.6  fb{-1}, collected by the CDF II detector. The tt cross section ratio is measured using two complementary methods, a b-jet tagging measurement and a topological approach. By multiplying the ratios by the well-known theoretical Z/γ{*}→ll cross section predicted by the standard model, the extracted tt cross sections are effectively insensitive to the uncertainty on luminosity. A best linear unbiased estimate is used to combine both measurements with the result σ{tt}=7.70±0.52  pb, for a top-quark mass of 172.5  GeV/c{2}.

Search for WW and WZ resonances decaying to electron, missing E(T), and two jets in pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV

Using data from 2.9  fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, we search for resonances decaying into a pair of on-shell gauge bosons, WW or WZ, where one W decays into an electron and a neutrino, and the other boson decays into two jets. We observed no statistically significant excess above the expected standard model background, and we set cross section limits at 95% confidence level on G* (Randall-Sundrum graviton), Z', and W' bosons. By comparing these limits to theoretical cross sections, mass exclusion regions for the three particles are derived. The mass exclusion regions for Z' and W' are further evaluated as a function of their gauge coupling strength.

Measurement of the W+ W- production cross section and search for anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings in pp collisions at square root(s)=1.96 TeV

This Letter describes the current most precise measurement of the W boson pair production cross section and most sensitive test of anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The WW candidates are reconstructed from decays containing two charged leptons and two neutrinos. Using data collected by the CDF II detector from 3.6  fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, a total of 654 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 320±47 events. The measured cross section is σ(pp→W+ W- +X)=12.1±0.9(stat)-1.4+1.6(syst)  pb, which is in good agreement with the standard model prediction. The same data sample is used to place constraints on anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings.

Search for the Higgs boson using neural networks in events with missing energy and b-quark jets in pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV

We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a W or Z boson in pp collisions at square root(s)=1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb(-1). We consider events which have no identified charged leptons, an imbalance in transverse momentum, and two or three jets where at least one jet is consistent with originating from the decay of a b hadron. We find good agreement between data and background predictions. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section for several Higgs boson masses ranging from 110 GeV/c(2) to 150 GeV/c(2). For a mass of 115 GeV/c(2) the observed (expected) limit is 6.9 (5.6) times the standard model prediction.

Search for technicolor particles produced in association with a W Boson at CDF

We present a search for the technicolor particles rho{T} and pi_{T} in the process pp-->rho{T}-->Wpi{T} at a center of mass energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. The search uses a data sample corresponding to approximately 1.9 fb{-1} of integrated luminosity accumulated by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The event signature we consider is W-->lnu and pi{T}-->bb, bc or bu depending on the pi{T} charge. We select events with a single high-p{T} electron or muon, large missing transverse energy, and two jets. Jets corresponding to bottom quarks are identified with multiple b-tagging algorithms. The observed number of events and the invariant mass distributions are consistent with the standard model background expectations, and we exclude a region at 95% confidence level in the rho{T}-pi{T} mass plane. As a result, a large fraction of the region m(rho{T})=180-250 GeV/c{2} and m(pi{T})=95-145 GeV/c{2} is excluded.

Measurement of the Lambdab0 lifetime in Lambdab0 --> Lambdac+pi- decays in pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV

We report a measurement of the lifetime of the Lambda(b)(0) baryon in decays to the Lambda(c)(+)pi(-) final state in a sample corresponding to 1.1 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. Using a sample of about 3000 fully reconstructed Lambda(b)(0) events we measure tau(Lambda(b)(0)) = 1.401 +/- 0.046(stat) +/- 0.035(syst) ps (corresponding to ctau(Lambda(b)(0)) = 420.1 +/- 13.7(stat) +/- 10.6(syst) microm, where c is the speed of light). The ratio of this result and the world average B(0) lifetime yields tau(Lambda(b)(0))/tau(B(0)) = 0.918 +/- 0.038 (stat) and (syst), in good agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

Measurement of the WW + WZ production cross section using the lepton + jets final state at CDF II

We report two complementary measurements of the WW + WZ cross section in the final state consisting of an electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and jets, performed using pp collision data at square root of s = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector. The first method uses the dijet invariant mass distribution while the second more sensitive method uses matrix-element calculations. The result from the second method has a signal significance of 5.4sigma and is the first observation of WW + WZ production using this signature. Combining the results gives sigma(WW + WZ) = 16.0 +/- 3.3 pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction.

Search for new bottomlike quark pair decays QQ-->(tW(+)(-))(tW(+)(-)in same-charge dilepton events

We report the most restrictive direct limits on masses of fourth-generation down-type quarks b{'}, and quarklike composite fermions (B or T{5/3}), decaying promptly to tW{-/+}. We search for a significant excess of events with two same-charge leptons (e, mu), several hadronic jets, and missing transverse energy. An analysis of data from pp collisions with an integrated luminosity of 2.7 fb{-1} collected with the CDF II detector at Fermilab yields no evidence for such a signal, setting mass limits m{b{'}}, m{B}>338 GeV/c{2} and m{T{5/3}}>365 GeV/c{2} at 95% confidence level.

The incidence, risk factors and prognostic implications of venous thromboembolism in patients with gastric cancer

BACKGROUND

Data on venous thromboembolism (VTE) in gastric cancer (GC) are very scarce.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the incidence, risk factors and prognostic implications of VTE in Asian GC patients.

METHODS

Prospective databases containing clinical information on GC patients (n = 2,085) were used.

RESULTS

The 2-year cumulative incidences of all VTE events were 0.5%, 3.5% and 24.4% in stages I, II-IV(M0) and IV(M1), respectively. Advanced stage, older age and no major surgery were independent risk factors for developing VTE. When the VTE cases were classified into extremity venous thrombosis (EVT), pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) or intra-abdominal venous thrombosis (IVT), IVTs (62%) were more common than EVTs (21%) or PTEs (17%). Although peri-operative pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis was not routinely administered, the VTE incidence after major surgery was only 0.2%. During chemotherapy, EVT/PTE developed more frequently than IVT (54% vs. 19%); however, during untreated or treatment-refractory periods, IVT developed more frequently than EVT/PTE (69% vs. 36%). In multivariate models, the development of EVT/PTE was a significant predictor of early death when compared with no occurrence of VTE (P < 0.05). However, IVT did not affect survival.

CONCLUSION

This is the largest study that specially focused on VTE in GC and the VTE incidence in Asian GC patients was first demonstrated. Considering the low incidence of post-operative VTE development, the necessity of peri-operative pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis should be evaluated separately in Asian patients. The clinical situation of the development of EVT/PTE and IVT differed. Only EVT/PTE had an adverse effect on survival and IVT had no prognostic significance.

Effects of glucose level on early and long-term mortality after intracerebral haemorrhage: the Acute Brain Bleeding Analysis Study

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS

Admission hyperglycaemia is associated with a poor outcome in patients with ischaemic stroke. However, its prognostic effects after intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) are still unclear.

METHODS

We prospectively enrolled patients with ICH at 33 centres in Korea between October 2002 and March 2004. A total of 1,387 patients who had ICH and underwent brain computed tomography within 48 h of symptom onset were included in the study (n = 1,387). Clinical information and radiological findings were collected at admission. Glucose levels were examined in relation to early (up to 30 days after ictus) and long-term (after 30 days) mortality rates using Cox regression analysis. To eliminate short-term effects, long-term mortality rate analysis was performed on surviving patients for more than 30 days.

RESULTS

The long-term mortality rate was 21.1% after a mean follow-up of 434.3 +/- 223.2 days and was found to increase significantly with glucose quartile (p < 0.001). Admission glucose level was an independent risk factor for early mortality (per mmol/l; adjusted HR 1.10 [95% CI 1.01-1.19]), but not for long-term mortality. Moreover, when analysis was restricted to patients without diabetes, glucose level was found to be an independent risk factor for post-ICH mortality (n = 1,119; adjusted HR 1.10 [95% CI 1.03-1.17]) and had marginal significance for early (p = 0.053) and long-term mortality (p = 0.09).

CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION

We found that admission glucose levels were associated with early mortality after ICH. In patients without diabetes, admission glucose levels were associated with long-term mortality. We therefore suggest that intensive lowering of glucose level should be further investigated in ICH patients.

Artemisia fukudo essential oil attenuates LPS-induced inflammation by suppressing NF-kappaB and MAPK activation in RAW 264.7 macrophages

In the present study, the chemical constituents of Artemisia fukudo essential oil (AFE) were investigated using GC-MS. The major constituents were alpha-thujone (48.28%), beta-thujone (12.69%), camphor (6.95%) and caryophyllene (6.01%). We also examined the effects of AFE on the production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta, and IL-6, in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Western blotting and RT-PCR tests indicated that AFE has potent dose-dependent inhibitory effects on pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators. We investigated the mechanism by which AFE inhibits NO and PGE(2) by examining the level of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) activation within the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, which is an inflammation-induced signal pathway in RAW 264.7 cells. AFE inhibited LPS-induced ERK, JNK, and p38 phosphorylation. Furthermore, AFE inhibited the LPS-induced phosphorylation and degradation of Ikappa-B-alpha, which is required for the nuclear translocations of the p50 and p65 NF-kappaB subunits in RAW 264.7 cells. Our results suggest that AFE might exert an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Such an effect is mediated by a blocking of NF-kappaB activation which consequently inhibits the generation of inflammatory mediators in RAW264.7 cells. AFE may be useful for treating inflammatory diseases.

Combination of Tevatron searches for the standard model Higgs boson in the W+W- decay mode

We combine searches by the CDF and D0 Collaborations for a Higgs boson decaying to W+W-. The data correspond to an integrated total luminosity of 4.8 (CDF) and 5.4 (D0) fb(-1) of pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No excess is observed above background expectation, and resulting limits on Higgs boson production exclude a standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 162-166 GeV at the 95% C.L.

Inclusive search for standard model Higgs boson production in the WW decay channel using the CDF II detector

We present a search for standard model (SM) Higgs boson production using pp collision data at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb(-1). We search for Higgs bosons produced in all processes with a significant production rate and decaying to two W bosons. We find no evidence for SM Higgs boson production and place upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the SM production cross section (sigma(H)) for values of the Higgs boson mass (sigma(H)) in the range from 110 to 200 GeV. These limits are the most stringent for m(H) > 130 GeV and are 1.29 above the predicted value of sigma(H) for c = 165 GeV.
