[New studies and considerations on the pathology of the primate skull. A contribution to the "Gundu" problem]

The problem of 'Gundu' in primates is discussed. Cases of so-called 'Gundu' in the literature, two cases in Gorilla and one in Lagothrix, are dealt with. Histological and X-ray techniques are used. One case (Lagothrix) represents the so-called simian bone disease, which is metabolic disorder and is due to a secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism. The other two cases (Gorilla) show symmetrical bony tumors of the maxilla. The origin is uncertain. Gundu, Paget's disease and primary hyperparathyroidism Recklinghausen have not been observed in primates so far.

Phospholipid biosynthesis: the activity of phosphatidic acid phosphohydrolase in the developing lung and amnionic fluid

The presented data suggest that PAPase may, indeed, be important in the biosynthesis of lung phospholipids. The observed increase in the specific activity of rabbit lung precedes the "surge" of phosphatidylcholine concentration and surfactant biosynthesis by at least 24 hours. In human amnionic fluid, PAPase specific activity was markedly increased in pregnancies of 35 weeks of gestation or more. The increase in the specific activity of PAPase preceded the "surge" of acetone precipitated phosphatidylcholine. The reported studies may provide an additional procedure to examine the problems associated with surfactant biosynthesis.

[Isolation and characterization of 11-S-globulins from sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus L.)]

The isolation of II-S globulin, which is homogenous on sedimentation and gel chromatography (s020, w = II,8 S), from sunflower seeds is achieved by cryoprecipitation from solutions of high ion strength (I approximately 0.5 to 1.8) with simultaneous reduction of the salt concentration (I approximately 0.3) and repeated gel chromatography on Sephadex G-200. By this technique, the 7-S component which occurs in small quantity is isolated too. In solutions of low ion strength (I less than 0,3), the II-S globulin dissociates to give a 7-S component. At high or low pH values (greater than 9.0 and less than 3.0, respectively), the latter dissociates to give a 3-S component, and in the presence of urea it further dissociates to give subunits. In the presence of sodium of sodium chloride, the dissociation of the 3-S component may be inhibited. The various steps of dissociation can be studied by means of ultracentrifugal sedimentation, gel chromatography and gel electrophoresis.

A real time picture processor for use in biologic cell identification. II. Hardware implementation

Hardware design specifications for a real time picture processor are presented. Attention is concentrated on those unique aspects of the hardware that make possible high speed storage and processing of images. The latter are the major contributors to rapidity by which various image transforms may be accomplished—speeds which are great enough to warrant the term real time.

A real time picture processor for use in biologic cell identification. I. System design

We show that the class of special purpose picture processors has common characteristics which set it apart from conventional general purpose computers. We argue for the implementation of a fast serial processor of gray scale images having easy access to a tessellated gray scale neighborhood, where the tessellation of a neighborhood is the movement of that neighborhood through the image array in some deterministic way. Such a machine would be very useful in an interactive system used for problems such as the design of effective procedures for automated cell classification.
