Abstract
Interaction of Cu ions with the amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptide is linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease; hence, determining the coordination of Cu(I) and Cu(II) ions to Abeta and the pathway of the Cu(I)(Abeta)/Cu(II)(Abeta) redox conversion is of great interest. In the present report, we use the room temperature X-ray absorption near edge structure to show that the binding sites of the Cu(I) and Cu(II) complexes are similar to those previously determined from frozen-solution studies. More precisely, the Cu(I) is coordinated by the imidazole groups of two histidine residues in a linear fashion. However, an NMR study unravels the involvement of all three histidine residues in the Cu(I) binding due to dynamical exchange between several set of ligands. The presence of an equilibrium is also responsible for the complex redox process observed by cyclic voltammetry and evidenced by a concentration-dependent electrochemical response.

Abstract
A high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) study of oxalate decarboxylase (OxdC) is reported. OxdC breaks down oxalate to carbon dioxide and formate and possesses two distinct manganese(II) binding sites, referred to as site-1 and -2. The Mn(II) zero-field interaction was used to probe the electronic state of the metal ion and to examine chemical/mechanistic roles of each of the Mn(II) centers. High magnetic-fields were exploited not only to resolve the two sites, but also to measure accurately the Mn(II) zero-field parameters of each of the sites. The spectra exhibited surprisingly complex behavior as a function of pH. Six different species were identified based on their zero-field interactions, two corresponding to site-1 and four states to site-2. The assignments were verified using a mutant that only affected site-1. The speciation data determined from the HFEPR spectra for site -2 was consistent with a simple triprotic equilibrium model, while the pH dependence of site-1 could be described by a single pK(a). This pH dependence was independent of the presence of the His-tag and of whether the preparations contained 1.2 or 1.6 Mn per subunit. Possible structures of the six species are proposed based on spectroscopic data from model complexes and existing protein crystallographic structures obtained at pH 8 are discussed. Although site-1 has been identified as the active site and no role has been assigned to site-2, the pronounced changes in the electronic structure of the latter and its pH behavior, which also matches the pH-dependent activity of this enzyme, suggests that even if the conversion of oxalate to formate is carried out at site-1, site-2 likely plays a catalytically relevant role.

Abstract
The formation of a dense monolayer of histidine-tagged recombinant laccase on gold electrodes by using a short thiol-NTA linker is described, as well as a kinetic analysis of the process by cyclic voltammetry. From a detailed analysis of the catalytic reduction of dioxygen by laccase in the presence of a one-electron redox mediator it can be concluded that the immobilized enzyme remains as active as in homogeneous solution.

Abstract
The two pentadentate amino-pyridine ligands L5(2) and L5(3) (L5(2) and L5(3) stand for the N-methyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine and the N-methyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)propane-1,3-diamine, respectively) were used to synthesize four mononuclear Mn(II) complexes, namely [(L5(2))MnCl](PF6) (1(PF6)), [(L5(3))MnCl](PF6) (2(PF6)), [(L5(2))Mn(OH2)](BPh4)2 (3(BPh4)2), and [(L5(3))Mn(OH2)](BPh4)2 (4(BPh4)2). The X-ray diffraction studies revealed different configurations for the ligand L5(n) (n = 2, 3) depending on the sixth exogenous ligand and/or the counterion. Solid state high-field electron paramagnetic resonance spectra were recorded on complexes 1-4 as on previously described mononuclear Mn(II) systems with tetra- or hexadentate amino-pyridine ligands. Positive and negative axial zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters D were determined whose absolute values ranged from 0.090 to 0.180 cm(-1). Density-functional theory calculations were performed unraveling that, in contrast with chloro systems, the spin-spin and spin-orbit coupling contributions to the D-parameter are comparable for mixed N,O-coordination sphere complexes.

Abstract
The GGGTH sequence has been proposed to be the minimal sequence involved in the binding of a fifth Cu(II) ion in addition to the octarepeat region of the prion protein (PrP) which binds four Cu(II) ions. Coordination of Cu(II) by the N- and C-protected Ac-GGGTH-NH(2) pentapeptide (P(5)) was investigated by using potentiometric titration, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry experiments. Four different Cu(II) complexes were identified and characterized as a function of pH. The Cu(II) binding mode switches from NO(3) to N(4) for pH values ranging from 6.0 to 10.0. Quasi-reversible reduction of the [Cu(II)(P(5))H(-2)] complex formed at pH 6.7 occurs at E (1/2)=0.04 V versus Ag/AgCl, whereas reversible oxidation of the [Cu(II)(P(5))H(-3)](-) complex formed at pH 10.0 occurs at E (1/2)=0.66 V versus Ag/AgCl. Comparison of our EPR data with those of the rSHaPrP(90-231) (Burns et al. in Biochemistry 42:6794-6803, 2003) strongly suggests an N(3)O binding mode at physiological pH for the fifth Cu(II) site in the protein.

Abstract
A bischloromanganese(II) complex [(LH)MnCl2] (1), where LH is the pentadentate ligand N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N'-salicylidene- ethane-1,2-diamine, has been synthesized. Elemental analysis, UV-visible, and cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that the phenol function of the ligand LH remains protonated. Exhaustive electrolysis at 1.0 V vs SCE led to the formation of the Mn(III) derivative [(L)MnCl]+ (3) with the concomitant expulsion of H+ and Cl-. The formation of the Mn(III) species was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 could be regenerated by the reduction of complex 3 in the presence of H+ and Cl-.

Abstract
Two Mn(II) complexes are isolated and X-ray characterized, namely, cis-[(L(2))Mn(II)(Cl)(2)] (1) and [(L(3))Mn(II)Cl(OH(2))](ClO(4)) (2(ClO(4))), where L(2) and L(3) are the well-known tetradentate N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine and N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)propane-1,3-diamine ligands, respectively. The crystal structure reveals that whereas the ligand L(2) is in the cis-alpha conformation in complex 1, the ligand L(3) is in the more unusual cis-beta conformation in 2. EPR spectra are recorded on frozen solutions for both complexes and are characteristic of Mn(II) species. Electrochemical behaviors are investigated on acetonitrile solution for both complexes and show that cation 2 exists as closely related Mn(II) species in equilibrium. For both complexes exhaustive bulk electrolyses of acetonitrile solution are performed at oxidative potential in various experimental conditions. In the presence of 2,6-lutidine and after elimination of chloride ligands, the formation of the di-mu-oxo mixed-valent complexes [(L(2))Mn(III)(mu-O)(2)Mn(IV)(L(2))](3+) (3a) and [(L(3))Mn(III)(mu-O)(2)Mn(IV)(L(3))](3+) (4) is confirmed by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry. In addition crystals of 4(ClO(4))(3) were isolated, and the X-ray structure reveals the cis-alphaconformation of L(3). In the absence of 2,6-lutidine and without elimination of the exogenous chloride ions, the electrochemical oxidation of 1 leads to the formation of the mononuclear Mn(III) complex, namely, [(L(2))Mn(III)(Cl)(2)](+) (5), as confirmed by UV-vis as well as parallel mode EPR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. In the same conditions, the electrochemical oxidation of complex 2 is more intricate, and a thorough analysis of EPR spectra establishes the formation of the binuclear mono-mu-oxo mixed-valent [(L(3))ClMn(III)(mu-O)Mn(IV)Cl(L(3))](3+) (6) complexes. Electrochemical conversion of Mn(II) complexes into mixed-valent Mn(2)(III,IV) oxo-bridged complexes in the presence of 2,6-lutidine is discussed. The role of the chloride ligands as well as that of L(3) in the building of oxo bridges is discussed. Differences in behavior between L(2) and L(3) are commented on.

Abstract
Two heptacoordinated Mn(II) complexes are isolated and X-ray characterized using the well-known tpen ligand (tpen = N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine): [(tpen)Mn(OH(2))](ClO(4))(2) (1(ClO(4))(2)) and [(tpen)Mn(micro-OAc)Mn(tpen)](ClO(4))(3).2H(2)O (2(ClO(4))(3).2H(2)O). Crystallographic data for 1(ClO(4))(2) at 110(2) K (respectively at 293(2) K): monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 15.049(3) A (15.096(3) A), b = 9.932(2) A (10.105(2) A), c = 19.246(4) A (19.443(4) A), beta = 94.21(3) degrees (94.50(3) degrees ), Z = 4. Crystallographic data for 2(ClO(4))(3).0.5(C(2)H(5))(2)O at 123(2) K: triclinic, space group P, a = 12.707(3) A, b = 12.824(3) A, c = 19.052(4) A, alpha = 102.71(3) degrees, beta = 97.83(3) degrees, gamma = 98.15(3) degrees, Z = 2. Investigation of the variation upon temperature of the molar magnetic susceptibility of compound 2(ClO(4))(3).2H(2)O reveals a weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the two high-spin Mn(II) ions (J = -0.65 +/- 0.05 cm(-)(1), H = -JS(1).S(2)). EPR spectra are recorded on powder samples and on frozen acetonitrile solutions, demonstrating the maintenance upon dissolution of the heptacoordination of Mn in complex 1 while complex 2 partially dissociates. Electrochemical responses of complexes 1 and 2 are investigated in acetonitrile, and bulk electrolyses are performed at oxidative potential in the presence of various amounts of 2,6-lutidine (0-2.65 equiv per Mn ion). The formation from either 1 or 2 of the mixed-valent complex [(tpen)Mn(III)(micro-O)(2)Mn(IV)(tpen)](3+) (3) is established from mass spectrometry and EPR and IR spectroscopy measurements. When reaction is started from 2, formation of [(tpen)Mn(IV)(micro-O)(2)(micro-OAc)Mn(IV)](3+) (4) is evidenced from cyclic voltammetry, EPR, and UV-vis data. The Mn vs tpen ratio in the electrogenerated complexes is accurately controlled by the quantity of additional 2,6-lutidine. The role of tpen as a base is discussed.

Abstract
The dinuclear phenolato-bridged complex [(mL)Mn(II)Mn(II)(mL)](ClO(4))(2) (1(ClO(4))(2)) has been obtained with the new [N(4)O] pentadentate ligand mL(-) (mLH=N,N'-bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N'-methyl-ethane-1,2-diamine) and has been characterised by X-ray crystallography. X- and Q-band EPR spectra were recorded and their variation with temperature was examined. All spectra exhibit features extending over 0-800 mT at the X band and over 100-1450 mT at the Q band, features that are usually observed for dinuclear Mn(II) complexes. Cyclic voltammetry of 1 exhibits two irreversible oxidation waves at E(1)(p)=0.89 V and E(2)(p)=1.02 V, accompanied on the reverse scan by an ill-defined cathodic wave at E(1')(p)=0.56 V (all measured versus the saturated calomel electrode (SCE)). Upon chemical oxidation with tBuOOH (10 equiv) at 20 degrees C, 1 is transformed into the mono-mu-oxo species [(mL)Mn(III)-(mu-O)-Mn(III)(mL)](2+) (2), which eventually partially evolves into the di-mu-oxo species [(mL)Mn(III)-(mu-O)(2)-Mn(IV)(mL)](n+) (3) in which one of the aromatic rings of the ligand is decoordinated. The UV/Vis spectrum of 2 displays a large absorption band at 507 nm, which is attributed to a phenolate-->Mn(III) charge-transfer transition. The cyclovoltammogram of 2 exhibits two reversible oxidation waves, at 0.65 and 1.16 V versus the SCE, corresponding to the Mn(III)Mn(III)/Mn(III)Mn(IV) and Mn(III)Mn(IV)/Mn(IV)Mn(IV) oxidation processes, respectively. The one-electron electrochemical oxidation of 2 leads to the mono-mu-oxo mixed-valent species [(mL)Mn(III)-(mu-O)-Mn(IV)(mL)](3+) (2 ox). The UV/Vis spectrum of 2 ox exhibits one large band at 643 nm, which is attributed to the phenolate-->Mn(IV) charge-transfer transition. 2 ox can also be obtained by the direct electrochemical oxidation of 1 in the presence of an external base. The 2 ox and 3 species exhibit a 16-line EPR signal with first peak to last trough widths of 125 and 111 mT, respectively. Both spectra have been simulated by using colinear rhombic Mn-hyperfine tensors. Mechanisms for the chemical formation of 2 and the electrochemical oxidation of 1 into 2 ox are proposed.

Abstract
The g-tensors and hyperfine tensors of the S = (1)/(2) ground state of the mixed valence [LMn(IIImu-O)(2)Mn(IV)L](3+) complex (L = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine) was deter-mined in the solid-state and frozen acetonitrile solution by high-field EPR. Both samples exhibited complex anisotropic temperature behaviors that precluded the use of routine spectrum simulation procedures to extract the spin parameters. To circumvent this problem, the parameters were measured directly by using multifrequency techniques. In the case of the frozen solution, this approach yielded seven of the nine spin parameters with varying uncertainty, the two extreme principal g-values, the four hyperfine couplings associated with each of these two g-values, and the middle g-value. This latter parameter was obtained from a first moment analysis. Unlike simulations, the statistical errors associated with each value could be assigned in a straightforward and rigorous manner. The directly measured g-values were different in frozen solution and polycrystalline powder. The temperature dependence of the high-field EPR spectra of the polycrystalline powder revealed a spin-spin interaction between the neighboring binuclear complexes.

Abstract
Dimeric [Mn(salpn)NCS](2)(1) and polymeric [Mn(salpn)NCS](n)(2) are formed by the reaction of Mn(CH(3)CO(2))(2).4H(2)O, the schiff base, and thiocyanate. The formation of the two polymorphic forms is solvent and temperature dependent. 1: orthorhombic, space group Pbca, with a = 12.573(2) A, b = 13.970(7) A, c = 18.891(9) A, and Z = 8. 2: orthorhombic, space group Pna2(1), with a = 12.5277(14) A, b = 11.576(2) A, c = 11.513(2) A, and Z = 4. The dimers in 1 are held together by weak noncovalent S...pi (phenyl) interactions leading to a chain along the a-axis. Each monomeric unit of the polymer in 2 is related to its adjacent ones by a 2-fold screw axis leading to a helix along the c-axis. The exchange coupling is nondetectable in the dimer. The magnetic susceptibility of the helical chain fits a classical chain law with J = -3.2 cm(-1) and shows a weak ferromagnetic ordering below 7 K due to spin canting effects.
