Abstract
UNLABELLED Individual genetic association studies examining the relationship between the MMP-9 -1562C/T polymorphism (rs3918242) and preeclampsia risk have yielded inconsistent results. OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the association between the MMP-9 -1562C/T polymorphism and preeclampsia risk using meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Relevant studies were identified by searching PubMed database. Data were extracted and statistical analysis was performed using STATA 12.0 software. A total of six publications involving 871 cases and 845 controls were included in this meta-analysis. RESULTS Combined analysis revealed no association between the MMP-9 -1562C/T polymorphism and preeclampsia risk (allelic model: OR = 1.10, 95% CI 0.86-1.41, Pheterogeneity = 0.07; recessive model: OR = 0.38, 95% CI 0.14-1.01, Pheterogeneity = 0.64; dominant model: OR = 1.09, 95% CI 0.70-1.69, Pheterogeneity = 0.01; homozygous model: OR = 0.41, 95% CI 0.15-1.09, Pheterogeneity = 0.67; heterozygous model: OR = 1.36, 95% CI 0.80-2.29, Pheterogeneity = 0.01). Similarly, subgroup analysis by ethnicity showed that MMP-9 -1562C/T polymorphism was not associated with preeclampsia risk in Brazilian (allelic model: OR = 1.37, 95% CI 0.92-2.05, Pheterogeneity = 0.61; recessive model: OR = 0.80, 95% CI 0.18-3.57, Pheterogeneity = 0.58; dominant model: OR = 1.12, 95% CI 0.60-2.10, Pheterogeneity = 0.03; homozygous model: OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.19-3.94, Pheterogeneity = 0.62; heterozygous model: OR = 1.55, 95% CI 0.99-1.75, Pheterogeneity = 0.32). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis indicated that MMP-9 -1562C/T polymorphism was not associated with preeclampsia risk. However, large well-designed, multi-center epidemiological studies should be carried out in these and other ethnic populations to confirm our findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the importance of the internal iliac artery (IIA) during the endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). METHODS Forty-six consecutive cases of AAA treated by EVAR were retrospectively analyzed. The complications after exclusion of the IIA were analyzed. RESULTS The bilateral IIAs were reserved in 18 cases, in which the follow-up was achieved in 16 cases and no complication was observed. The IIAs were excluded in 28 (60.9%) cases, in which the bilateral, right and left IIAs were excluded in 7 (15.2%), 14 (30.4%) and 7 (15.2%) cases respectively. The follow-up was achieved in 26 cases. Buttock claudication was observed in 12 (46.2%) cases, altered bowel habit was observed in 8 (32.0%) cases, erectile dysfunction was observed in 3 (12.0%) cases, and bloody stool was observed in 2 (8.0%) cases. Comparing the bilateral and unilateral IIA exclusions, the rates of buttock claudication were 50.0% vs. 45.0%, altered bowel habit 33.3% vs. 31.6%, and erectile dysfunction 33.3% vs. 5.3% respectively. And the average duration of buttock claudication of bilateral IIAs exclusion (8.3 months) was longer than that of unilateral exclusion (4.7 months). Moreover, comparing the left and right IIA exclusions, the rates of buttock claudication were 57.1% vs. 38.5%, altered bowel habit 57.1% vs. 16.7%, and bloody stool 28.6% vs. 0 respectively. And the average duration of buttock claudication of left IIA exclusion (6.0 months) was longer than that of right exclusion (3.7 months). CONCLUSION The IIAs, especially the left IIA, should be reserved during the EVAR for AAA.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Gecko, a kind of reptile, has been widely used as a traditional Chinese medicine to treat various diseases including cancer in China for thousands of years. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-tumor effect of AG (aqueous extracts of fresh gecko) on human hepatocellular carcinoma cell Bel-7402 in vitro and mouse H22 hepatocellular in vivo. Further to underlie the molecular mechanism of AG inducing the differentiation of Bel-7402 cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS AG was obtained by water extracting method and qualitatively analyzed through High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The total protein concentration of AG was measured by BCA (bicinchoninic acid disodium) assay. The anti-tumor activities in vivo were analyzed through H22 (mouse hepatocellular carcinoma cell line H22) tumor xenografts mice. The cytotoxic activity of AG on Bel-7402 cells was evaluated by MTT assays. AFP (alpha fetoprotein) was detected by radioimmunoassay. ALB (albumin), ALP (alkaline phosphatase) and γ-GT (γ-glutamyl transpeptidase) were detected by biochemical methods with commercial kits. While morphological changes were observed through an inverted microscope. Moreover, the expression level of the proteins involved in MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signal pathway which was closely related to cellular differentiation was assessed by Western blot. RESULTS AG showed obviously anti-tumor activity in vivo and anti-proliferative activity on Bel-7402 cells in vitro both dose-dependently. The number of clones of Bel-7402 cells treated with AG reduced and the cells were displaying differentiation state such as relatively bigger size and dispersed growth. The biochemical function markers of the cells were significantly changed after being treated with AG. The data showed that AFP secretion of the cells decreased 42.5%, ALB secretion increased 58.9%, the activity of ALP and γ-GT markedly decreased 67.0% and 48.5% separately when the concentration of AG was 10μl/ml, and those effects were all in a dose-dependent manner. The major original and phosphorylated signal proteins (ERK1/2 (extracellular sigal-regualted kinase 1/2), P38 (p38 MAPK) and JNK1/2 (c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1/2)) involved in MAPK signal pathway were measured and the results showed that AG activated the ERK1/2 of Bel-7402 cells. CONCLUSIONS AG has anti-tumor activity in vivo and inhibits Bel-7402 cell proliferation in vitro through inducing cell differentiation, and the mechanism involves the activation of ERK1/2.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties of intravenously (IV) administered cefetamet-Na and per os (PO) administered cefetamet pivoxil were investigated in eighteen healthy dogs at three different dose levels. The three doses for IV cefetamet-Na were 95, 190 and 380 mg, while those for oral cefetamet pivoxil were 125, 250 and 500 mg (both equivalent to 90, 180 and 360 mg of cefetamet). An efficacy predictor, measured as the ratios of the time that the concentration of the free drug is over the MIC90 (T > MIC90) and the dosing interval (f% T > MIC90) of IV and PO administration were calculated. The PK parameters' maximum concentration (C max), half-life (t 1/2) and area under the curve (AUC0-t ) after three IV doses were 42.85 ± 11.79 μg/mL, 1.66 ± 0.36 h and 80.10 ± 28.92 mg h/L (95 mg); 93.50 ± 30.51 μg/mL, 1.47 ± 0.13 h and 1.47 ± 0.13 mg h/L (190 mg); 185.74 ± 113.83 μg/mL, 1.60 ± 0.38 h and 263.20 ± 73.27 mg h/L (380 mg). After PO administration, the C max, t 1/2 and AUC0-t at three doses were 9.25 ± 1.02 μg/mL, 1.79 ± 0.50 h and 31.90 ± 4.76 mg h/L (125 mg); 9.75 ± 1.77 μg/mL, 1.93 ± 0.65 h and 42.69 ± 8.93 mg h/L (250 mg); 15.55 ± 6.65 μg/mL, 2.02 ± 0.54 h, and 68.72 ± 24.11 mg h/L (500 mg). The IV f% T > MIC90 was greater than PO f% T > MIC90 when MIC90 was within the range of 0.25-256 mg/L.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare pressure ulcer healing rates in patients supplemented with a specialised amino acid mixture containing (beta)-hydroxy (beta)-methylbutyrate (HMB), arginine and glutamine, and standard oral nutritional supplements versus patients supplemented with oral nutritional supplements and a placebo mixture. METHOD Twenty-three inpatients with stage II, III or IV pressure ulcers in an acute care hospital were randomised to recieve (A) a HMB, arginine and glutamine mixture twice daily alongside oral nutritional supplements (n=11) or (B) standard nutritional care alongside oral nutritional supplements (n=12) for 2 weeks. Pressure ulcers were measured weekly for area, depth and Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) scores. The proportion of viable tissue was determined based on area of wound tracing. Weekly laboratory tests were performed to measure C-reactive protein and pre-albumin levels. This trial is registered at http://ClinicalTrials.gov under NCT01090076. RESULTS There was no difference between anthropometrical measurements, biochemical parameters and nutritional intake pre- and post- study. Wound area did not decrease significantly in the short term for both groups. The proportion of viable tissues increased within 2 weeks on HMB, arginine and glutamine supplementation (p=0.02). PUSH scores showed significant improvement within 1 week of supplementation for the experimental group (p=0.013). CONCLUSION The use of specialised amino acid does not appear to reduce wound size and PUSH scores but may improve tissue viability after 2 weeks. Further confirmation on a larger scale is required to determine the benefits of supplementing additional HMB, arginine and glutamine in patients with pressure ulcers.

Abstract
We study dc-current effects on the magnetoresistance oscillation in a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, using the balance-equation approach to nonlinear magnetotransport. In the weak current limit the magnetoresistance exhibits periodical Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation with changing Rashba coupling strength for a fixed magnetic field. At finite dc bias, the period of the oscillation halves when the interbranch contribution to resistivity dominates. With further increasing current density, the oscillatory resistivity exhibits phase inversion, i.e., magnetoresistivity minima (maxima) invert to maxima (minima) at certain values of the dc bias, which is due to the current-induced magnetoresistance oscillation.

Abstract
Traditionally, cancer research has focused on protein‑coding genes, which are considered the principal effectors and regulators of tumorigenesis. Non‑coding RNAs, in particular microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non‑coding RNAs (lncRNAs), have been widely reported to be important in the regulation of tumorigenesis and cancer development. However, to the best of our knowledge, investigation of the expression profiles of lncRNAs and a comparison of the involvement of lncRNAs, miRNAs and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in esophageal tumorigenesis and development have not previously been performed. In the current study, intrinsic associations among the expression profiles of lncRNAs, miRNAs and mRNAs from normal esophageal tissues and those from cancer tissues were investigated. Oligonucleotide microarrays were used to detect the expression profiles of the three types of RNA in the canceration processes of human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues. It was demonstrated that the different RNAs exhibit associated patterns of expression among normal esophageal epithelium, low‑grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN), high‑grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN), and carcinoma tissues, particularly in the critical period of canceration (HGIN to ESCC). Furthermore, the results indicated a high level of similarity in the potential function of lncRNAs, miRNAs and mRNAs in the processes of ESCC development. In the current study, a first generation atlas of lncRNA profiling and its association with miRNAs and mRNAs in the canceration processes of ESCC were presented.

Abstract
A 3D organic-inorganic hybrid compound based on the Lindqvist-type polyoxometalate, [{Cu(phen)}3{Cu(μ2-ox)3}{Mo6O19}] (1) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, ox = oxalate), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, PXRD, XPS, UV-vis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In compound 1, three C2O4(2-) ligands bridge one Cu atom and three Cu(phen) fragments to form a tetra-nuclear copper(II) coordination complex [{Cu(phen)}3{Cu(μ2-ox)3}](2+) unit. The six-node [Mo6O19](2-) clusters are interweaved by the 6-connected tetranuclear copper(II) complex units into an intricate 3D network structure, exhibiting a 4(12)·6(3)-nbo (sodium chloride-type) topology. Compound 1 exhibits the highest connectivity of Lindqvist-type POM hybrid materials. The electrochemical behavior of 1-CPE has been investigated in detail. Furthermore, a diffuse reflectivity spectrum of 1 reveals the presence of an optical band gap and the nature of semiconductivity with a large energy gap. A magnetic susceptibility study reveals predominant antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu(II) bridge units.

Abstract
LncRNA SPRY4-IT1 has been shown to promote the progression of melanoma. However, the role of lncRNA SPRY4-IT1 in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical significance and biological functions of SPRY4-IT1 in ESCC. The expression levels of lncRNA SPRY4-IT in 92 ESCC patients and 8 ESCC cell lines were evaluated by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The prognostic significance was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) was used to suppress SPRY4-IT1 expression in ESCC cell lines. Both in vitro and in vivo assays were performed to further explore its role in tumor progression. SPRY4-IT1 levels were significantly higher in ESCC tissues and cells than in corresponding adjacent noncancerous tissues and nontumorigenic esophageal epithelial cells, and the ESCC patients with higher SPRY4-IT1 expression had an advanced clinical stage and poorer prognosis than those with lower SPRY4-IT1 expression. The multivariate analysis revealed that SPRY4-IT1 expression level is an independent prognostic factor in ESCC patients. In vitro assays demonstrated that knockdown of SPRY4-IT1 reduced cell proliferation, invasiveness, and migration. In vivo assays demonstrated that knockdown of SPRY4-IT1 decreases cell growth. SPRY4-IT1 is a novel molecule involved in ESCC progression, which may provide a potential prognostic biomarker and a potential target for therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the mechanism of Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) on diabetes treatment and mass loss in KK-Ay mice with genetic type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and to identify the main hypoglycemic ingredients. METHODS C57 and KK-Ay DM mice were divided into eight groups each comprising six mice: healthy normal, DM model, and DM model treated with PNS (200 mg/kg body mass), ginsenoside Re (Re, 14 mg/kg body mass), ginsenoside Rd (Rd, 15 mg/kg body mass), ginsenoside Rgl (Rg1, 40 mg/kg body mass), ginsenoside Rb1 (Rb1, 60 mg/kg body mass) and notoginsenoside R1 (R1, 6 mg/kg body mass). The PNS were intraperitoneal injection administered for 30 d, while the Re, RB1, Rg1, Rd and Re were intraperitoneal injection administered for 12 d. The fasting blood sugar (FBG), glucose tolerance (GT), serum insulin, leptin, body weight, food consumption, and levels of adipose tissue and blood lipid were determined. RESULTS On 12 d, lower FBG levels were found in the PNS and Rb1 treated mice compared with the model mice (P < 0.05). No statistical differences in FBG levels were found between the rest of the treatment groups and the model group (P > 0.05). After 30 d continuous administration of PNS, the FBG level of the mice further declined (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the serum insulin (P < 0.05) and insulin resistance index (P < 0.01) of the PNS treated mice also declined significantly. Compared with model group, the PNS group had lower levels of body weight growth, food consumption, adipose tissue, and leptin (P < 0.05). Lower FBG level was also found in Rb1 treated mice (12 d of administration), P < 0.05. CONCLUSION PNS has anti-hyperglycemic and anti-obesity activities by improving insulin and leptin sensitivities in KK-Ay mice. Rb1 may be the hypoglycemic ingredient in the PNS extract.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies revealed that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical regulatory roles in cancer biology. PlncRNA-1 is one of lncRNAs that is associated with cell apoptosis and proliferation of prostate cancer. AIM This study aimed to assess the potential role of PlncRNA-1 in the pathogenesis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expression level of PlncRNA-1 in 73 pairs of ESCC and their matched normal tissues. The correlation of PlncRNA-1 with clinicopathological features and clinical stages was also analyzed. Cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis were assessed following knock-down of PlncRNA-1 by MTT, colony formation assay, and flow cytometry. RESULTS The expression of PlncRNA-1 was significantly higher in human ESCC compared with the adjacent noncancerous tissues (69.8 %, p < 0.05), and the high level of PlncRNA-1 expression was significantly correlated with advanced clinical stage (p < 0.01) and lymph node metastasis (p < 0.05). Furthermore, knockdown of PlncRNA-1 reduced cell proliferation and increased the apoptosis in vitro. CONCLUSIONS PlncRNA-1 plays an important role in ESCC cell proliferation. Overexpression of PlncRNA-1 is correlated with advanced tumor stage and lymph node metastasis, and may serve as a potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target for ESCC.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether Huisheng oral solution (HSOS) has an inhibitory effect on the development of pulmonary thrombosis and metastasis in mice with Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC), and to explore the possible mechanisms involved. A mouse model of LLC was developed, and model mice were divided into either a treatment group or a control group to undergo treatment with HSOS or normal saline. Normal mice treated with saline were used as normal controls. On day 25 after treatment, blood samples were drawn from the eyes of half the mice in each group to determine blood cell counts and plasma levels of D-Dimer and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), while heart blood samples were collected from the remaining mice to measure the rate of thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. For all mice, pathological analyses of the cerebrum, lung, mesentery, femoral vein, external iliac vein and spleen were performed. Tumors were weighed to assess the impact of HSOS treatment on tumor growth, and the number of thrombi, metastatic nodules and neovessels in the tumor tissue were counted. In addition, 24 normal New Zealand rabbits were divided into two groups and treated with either HSOS or normal saline to determine the rates of ADP-, collagen- or thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. Compared with the model group, HSOS treatment decreased the incidence of pulmonary thromboembolism and metastasis, the number of metastatic nodules, the plasma levels of D-dimer and VEGF, the rate of collagen-induced platelet aggregation in rabbits and the numbers of leukocytes and tumor neovessels (P<0.05 for all). It increased the thymus and spleen coefficients and the number of platelets (P<0.05 for all), but had no significant effect on thrombin-induced platelet aggregation in mice and rabbits, ADP-induced platelet aggregation in rabbits, or the number of red blood cells. The reduced rate of tumor growth was 9.7% in mice treated with HSOS. HSOS treatment effectively reduced the development of pulmonary thromboembolism and metastasis in mice bearing LLC via mechanisms possibly associated with ameliorating a blood hypercoagulable state, decreasing tumor angiogenesis and enhancing immunity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The miR-196a2 gene contains a C/T polymorphism (rs11614913). Its presence could change the conformation of secondary structure of miR-196a2 RNA, and directly affect the binding to target mRNAs and the miRNA maturation process. Both of which eventually alter protein expression and contributed to cancer susceptibility. This study assessed whether the rs11614913 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) could affect an individual's susceptibility to esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCC). METHODS SNP rs11614913 was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction ligase detection reaction (PCR-LDR) in 597 ESCC patients and 597 control subjects. RESULTS Overall, there were no significant differences in the frequency of the miRNA-196a2 SNP rs11614913 genotype between the ESCC cases and the controls (χ(2) = 1.395, p = 0.498). The TT genotype, CT genotype and CT/TT combined genotype (dominant model) did not modify the risk of ESCC as compared with the CC genotype. Comparisons of the TT genotype to the CT/CC combined genotype did not reveal a significant association to ESCC, too. However, further analyses revealed an increased risk of ESCC in the dominant model (OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.08-2.26) and the allele frequency comparison (OR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.06-1.63) in the ≤60-year-old group. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the miRNA-196a2 functional polymorphism rs11614913 might be an effective genetic marker for ESCC risk assessment in individuals younger than 60 years of age from a region of high ESCC incidence in northern China.

Abstract
The α-(1,2) fucosyltransferases (Fut1 and Fut2) and α-(1,3) fucosyltransferases (Fut4, Fut9) are responsible for the synthesis of Lewis X (LeX) and Lewis Y (LeY) conjugated to glycoproteins. We recently reported that these fucosyltransferases were differentially expressed in the reproductive tract of male mouse. Here, we studied the effect of androgen on fucosyltransferase expression through the use of mouse castration models. We found that Fut1 mRNA and Fut4 mRNA were upregulated, while Fut2 mRNA and Fut9 mRNA were downregulated by androgen in the caput epididymis. However, in the vas deferens and prostate, only Fut4 mRNA and Fut2 mRNA were respectively upregulated following exposure to androgen. In the seminal vesicle, all fucosyltransferases, with the exception of Fut9, were upregulated. We identified the androgen receptor binding sites (ARBSs) of Fut2, Fut4 and Fut9 in the caput epididymis. Luciferase assay for these ARBSs is able to provide an indication as to why Fut4 and Fut9 are differently expressed and regulated by androgen, although they catalyze the same α-(1,3) fucose linkage. Our study showed that androgen could differentially regulate the expression of these fucosyltransferases and provided an insight into the characteristic distribution of each fucosyltransferase responsible for LeX/LeY biosynthesis in the male reproductive tract.

Abstract
We amplified S14R protein gene cDNA of porcine, cloned it into a prokaryotic expression plasmid, and expressed it in Escherichia coli. A pair of primers was designed based on the cDNA sequence of the porcine S14R gene in GenBank. The target gene fragment from porcine liver tissue was amplified by RT-PCR. Confirmed by auto-sequencing, the target gene fragment was subcloned into an expression vector of pET28a. The pET28a-S14R construct was subsequently transformed into E. coli BL21 (DE3). This construct was verified by restriction endonuclease digestion and sequencing. Using isopropyl β-D-1-thiogalactopyranoside induction, a new recombinant protein with the expected relative molecular mass of 24 kDa appeared. The result was identified by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis. Porcine S14R includes 549bp (GenBank No. JN793537), with an open reading frame of 549 bp coding 182 amino acids.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the role of real-time B-mode ultrasound in posterior decompression and reduction and to observe the signal changes in spinal cord blood flow in a thoracolumbar burst fracture (TBF). Between February 2004 and December 2008, 138 patients with TBF were divided into group A (108 cases) and group B (30 cases). In group A, under the assistance of real-time B-mode ultrasound, posterior decompression and fracture piece reduction were performed, and we observed the signal changes in spinal cord blood flow. In group B, posterior fenestration was combined with pushing the fracture piece into the fractured vertebral body using an L-shaped operative tool. Presurgical and postsurgical recovery of neurological function was evaluated according to American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) standards, and the range of spinal decompression was determined by measuring the proportion of encroached fracture piece in the spinal canal (spinal stenosis rate) on the computed tomography (CT) image. In group A, 12 patients had a grade A spinal injury according to the Frankel grading system, and there were six cases without neurological recovery. In the other patients, neurological function increased by 1–3 grades. There were no aggravated spinal cord injuries or other serious complications. In group B, three patients were categorized as grade A and there were two cases without neurological recovery. In the other patients, neurological function increased by 1–3 grades. In groups A and B, the postsurgical spinal stenosis rate was significantly lower than the presurgical stenosis rate (P<0.05). The postsurgical spinal stenosis rate in group B was significantly higher compared with group A (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in neurological function recovery between the groups (P>0.05). Real-time B-mode ultrasound is an effective method for posterior decompression and reduction and to observe signal changes in spinal cord blood flow in TBF.

Abstract
A C/T polymorphism (rs11614913) was identified in the microRNA (miRNA) 196a2 (miR-196a2) gene and was implicated in the susceptibility to cancer. Numerous studies have investigated its association with the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the results were inconsistent and inconclusive. The present meta-analysis was conducted based on the results of six published case-control studies comprising 1,754 cases and 2,430 controls (up to November, 2012). Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for the allelic and genotypic comparisons following the co-dominant, dominant and recessive genetic models. The Chi-square-based Q-test was used to assess heterogeneity. Egger's test and inverted funnel plots were used to investigate publication bias. Subgroup analysis was also performed. The results demonstrated that almost all the genetic models (except the model of CT vs. TT) indicated a significant association between rs11614913 polymorphism and CRC risk. The subgroup analysis in an Asian population also demonstrated similar results. However, there was no significant association of miR-196a2 rs11614913 polymorphism with the clinical characteristics of CRC patients. Our results confirmed the association of the polymorphism rs11614913 with the risk of CRC, but not with tumor stage and grade.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the prognostic significance of CD47 in a NOD/SCID mouse model of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and the best strategy for targeted therapy for this disease. METHODS CD34(+)CD38(-) leukemia stem cells (LSCs) were separated and transplanted into NOD/SCID mice to establish a mouse model of acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL). Anti-human CD47 antibody, alone or combined with cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C), was used to treat the mice with AMoL for 7-14 days, and therapeutic efficacy was assessed. LSCs were cultured together with mouse macrophages in culture medium containing anti-CD47 or anti-CD45 monoclonal antibody for 2 hours, to observe the phagocytic ability of macrophages to LSCs. RESULTS CD34(+)CD38(-) LSCs existed among THP-1 cells, with a content of about (0.12 ± 0.06)%, and a mouse model of AML was successfully established after the purified CD34(+)CD38(-) LSCs (97.0% ± 1.7%) were transplanted into NOD/SCID mice. The in vivo experiment showed that mice with AMoL had the most significant decrease in CD33(+)CD45(+) leukemia cells in peripheral blood and bone marrow and survived the longest after being treated with Ara-C (7 days) plus anti-CD47 monoclonal antibody (14 days) (P < 0.01). After 2 hours of in vitro culture, the phagocytic index in the culture medium containing anti-CD47 monoclonal antibody was significantly higher than in the culture medium containing anti-CD45 monoclonal antibody (76.9% ± 12.2% vs 7.60% ± 2.4%; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS High expression of CD47 is an adverse prognostic factor in AML. Combination therapy with anti-CD47 monoclonal antibody and Ara-C can effectively eliminate leukemia cells and LSCs, demonstrating great clinical significance in curing AML.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the inhibitory effects of fresh gecko crude extract and its hydrolysate on H22 transplanted tumor in mice. METHODS The content of soluble nitrogen (SN-TCA index) was used to determine the degree of enzymolysis. The hydrolysate of gecko was obtained from fresh gecko crude extract by pepsin and papain hydrolyzing. H22 transplanted tumor mouse models were established and divided into negative group, positive group, crude extract group and hydrolysate group. RESULTS The inhibition rate of the H22 tumor-bearing mice was 29.17%, 48.99% respectively for the crude extract group and the hydrolysate group. The inhibition rate of hydrolysate group and the negative group were significantly different (P < 0.05). The spleen and thymus index for the crude extract group and the hydrolysate group didn't show different compared with the negative group. CONCLUSION The crude extract of the fresh gecko and the hydrolysate can inhibit the growth of the H22 transplanted tumor. The enzymolysis by pepsin and papain can increase the antitumor activity of the crude extract of fresh gecko.

Abstract
Parasitic infection profile in China has been changed greatly with the rapid economic development in China since the 1980s, such as the tremendous decreased infection rate of the soil-borne helminthiasis, the elimination of filariasis, the control of malaria, and the initiation to eradicate malaria in 2020. Some food-borne parasitic infections have increased such as Clonorchiasis, Cysticercosis, and Echinococcosis, probably because of the increased chances of eating out. This trend directly affected the status of Human Parasitology teaching in medical universities, such as the shorten length of this course, re-adjusted contents structure and teaching manners, even the change of the name of this course. In this paper, we analyzed the current status and challenges of Human Parasitology teaching in medical universities, and discussed the requisite contents and manners in course delivery and measures to improve the quality of Human Parasitology teaching in China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore the effect of vacuum sealed drainage on the recovery of gastrointestinal function in gastric patients after radical gastrectomy. METHODS One hundred and twenty patients who received radical for gastric cancer were randomly divided into two groups. Patients in the control group received continuous gastrointestinal decompression to drain the gastric juices after radical gastrectomy, whereas patients in the treatment group received vacuum sealed drainage. The postoperative variables between the two groups were compared, including time of bowel sound reoccurrence, time of the first flatus, indwelling time of gastric tube, days of hospitalization, and complications, such as anastomotic leakage, intestinal obstruction, wound infection, pulmonary infection, fever, and pharyngitis. SPSS 13.0 was used to analyze the data. RESULTS SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN THE FOLLOWING VARIABLES WERE OBSERVED IN PATIENTS BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS: time of bowel sound reoccurrence, time of the first flatus, indwelling time of gastric tube, and length of hospitalization of the patients. The value of each of these variables was much smaller in the treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). No significant difference was found in the incidence of anastomotic leakage, intestinal obstruction, and wound infection among patients between the two groups (P>0.05). However, a significant differences were observed in the incidence of pulmonary infection, fever, and pharyngitis among the patients between the two groups (P<0.05), with much lower incidence of the variables in the treatment group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Vacuum sealed drainage used in gastric cancer patients after radical gastrectomy can accelerate the recovery of gastrointestinal function and reduce postoperative complications. Moreover, it shortens the indwelling time of the gastric tube, thereby making the patients feel comfortable without the disturbance from the gastric tube.
