Influence of Grain Processing on Acid–Base Balance in Feedlot Steers

Grain processing (e.g. grinding, steaming, pelleting, flaking) has been reported to modify the incidence of ruminal disturbances in feedlot cattle. This study investigated the effects of two grain processing methods widely used in Spanish feedlots (grinding and pelleting) on animal performance, blood acid-base balance, blood electrolyte levels and serum lactate in a 140-day feedlot experiment with double-muscled Belgian Blue steers. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the way in which these two feeds modify blood acid-base balance, which is closely associated with ruminal pH. In light of our results we conclude that the animals that received the pelleted feed showed a more stable acid-base balance over time than those fed a ground feed. Nevertheless, higher levels of L-lactate and lower base excess (BE) and HCO(3)(-) values for cattle fed pelleted grain reflect a greater risk of grain-acid overload.

Influence of copper status on the accumulation of toxic and essential metals in cattle

The aim of the present study was to assess whether the use of pig slurry and associated copper accumulation in calves grazing pastures fertilized with pig slurry from the Deza region in NW Spain has a significant influence on toxic metal and essential metal levels, and to investigate whether copper accumulation is correlated with the levels of these other metals. Correlations between copper, toxic metals (cadmium, lead) and essential metals (molybdenum, iron, zinc, selenium, manganese and cobalt) concentrations were evaluated in liver and kidney of 195 calves from the region of Deza. Metal concentrations were determined by ICP-OES and correlations between pairs of elements by Pearson correlation analysis. There was a strongly significant positive association between copper and lead in the liver. Considering the trace metals, copper in the liver showed significant positive correlations with cobalt in both liver and kidney, and with molybdenum in the liver. In addition, significant correlations were observed between copper and most essential metals in kidney. These associations are similar to those found in different animal species experimentally dosed with copper and other metals, as well as in cattle exposed to normal copper concentrations.

Effects of ovariectomy and growth hormone administration on body composition and vascular function and structure in old female rats

Aging and estrogen-deprivation induce deleterious effects on body composition and vascular function in females. On the other hand, growth hormone (GH), whose production is reduced by age, exerts several vascular effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of long-term estrogen deprivation and GH administration on body composition, vascular function and structure in aged female rats.

METHODS

Twelve female Wistar rats were ovariectomized at 10 months of age. At 20 months of age, half of the ovariectomized rats were treated with GH for 4 weeks. The remaining ovariectomized rats animals and one group of six intact females were used as control groups. After the treatment period, animals were sacrificed and Specific Gravity Index (SGI) and periuterine fat weigh, as well as vascular reactivity and morphometry in aortic rings, were studied.

RESULTS

No significant differences were found in SGI and periuterine fat weigh between ovariectomized and intact control rats. SGI was significantly increased by GH, and periuterine fat was reduced by the treatment. Dose-dependent relaxing responses to acetylcholine and isoproterenol were significantly diminished in ovariectomized rats as compared with intact animals, and GH treatment improved these responses. Ovariectomized animals showed significantly higher contracting responses to phenylephrine, acetylcholine + L-NAME and angiotensin-I than intact rats, and treatment with GH reduced them significantly. Media cross-sectional area was increased in ovariectomized rats as compared to intact animals, and GH reduced this area, but differences did not reach significance.

CONCLUSION

GH has beneficial effects in body composition and endothelial function in old ovariectomized female rats.

Effect of isoflavone administration on age-related hepatocyte changes in old ovariectomized femal Wistar rats

Aging seems to be due to the accumulation of oxidative damage in cells and molecules. On the other hand, menopause and ovariectomy induce deleterious effects on different organs and systems that have been shown to be counteracted by estrogens and in a not so evident form also with phytoestrogens. The present study has investigated whether the administration of a commercial soy extract that contains approximately 10% isoflavones was able to modify some parameters related to oxidative stress and inflammation in hepatocytes isolated from old ovariectomized female Wistar rats. Eighteen 22-month-old animals that had been previously ovariectomized at 12 months of age were divided into four groups: ovariectomized control rats, estradiol-treated ovariectomized females and ovariectomized rats treated with isoflavones. Six intact female rats of 2 months of age were used as reference group. Hepatocytes were isolated and cultured, and carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO) release, as well as adenosyl triphosphate (ATP), cyclic guanosyl monophosphate (cGMP), phosphatidylcholine (PC) and lipid peroxide (LPO) content of cells were evaluated. Uterus was also removed and weighed. Hepatocytes isolated from old ovariectomized rats showed a decrease in ATP content as compared to young animals. Age also induced an increase in LPO cell content. NO, CO and cGMP were augmented with age, and PC synthesis showed a dramatic reduction. Treatment with either estradiol or isoflavones were able to improve all the mentioned parameters altered in hepatocytes isolated from old ovariectomized rats, and the magnitude of the improvement was similar for both treatments. Ovariectomy induced a significant reduction in uterine weight, which was significantly counteracted by estradiol treatment but not by isoflavone administration. In conclusion, the administration of a soy extract containing isoflavones seems to prevent oxidative changes in hepatocytes isolated from old ovariectomized female rats, without modifying uterus weight.

ABV (doxorubicin [Adriamycin], bleomicin and vincristine) polychemotherapy regimen in HIV Kaposi’s Sarcoma: Uruguaian 10-year experience

Background: Kaposi’s sarcoma is the most common malignancy among HIV patients and is considered to be one of the AIDS defining conditions. This abstract illustrates our 10 year experience with the treatment of 32 Kaposi’s sarcoma HIV patients with the same therapeutic approach. Methods: Between 04/95 and 03/05 we recruited 32 previously untreated patients that were diagnosed with Kaposi’s sarcoma and treated at the Servicio de Oncologia Clinica (Universitary Clinicas Hospital) in Montevideo. All of them received the same iv polychemotherapy plan (Adriamycin 10mg/m2, Bleomycin 10 U/m2 and Vincristine 1.4 mg/m2, every two weeks until tumor progression or severe toxicity). Results: 21 of the patients were good risk ones and the remaining 11 were poor risk patients (AIDS Clinical Trials Group staging classification). CD4 levels varied from 6 to 780/ml and the viral load ranges were 240 to 89000 copies. The patients received an average of 10.2 (4–21) polychemotherapy cycles. Grade 3–4 myelotoxicity was reported in 5 patients delaying the onset of the subsequent cycles. Grade 2 neurotoxicity was seen in 7 patients after 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 13 cycles of ABV, changing vincristine for vinblastine (4mg/m2 every two weeks) in these patients. All the patients achieved a partial response with improvements in CD4 levels and viral load. 13/32 patients experienced a relapse (3–29 months after last chemotherapy cycle). 3 patients were retreated with paclitaxel 135 mg/m2 with 2/3 new partial responses of shorter duration. 5 patients received 4 additional ABV cycles achieving a new partial response. 5 patients refused further treatment dying due to progressive disease. One relapsed patient developed a second malignancy (High grade Non Hodgkin lymphoma) dying three months later. Conclusions: These data suggest that ABV regimen is still an effective treatment option for HIV-Kaposi’s sarcoma, specially in the undeveloped countries in which the cost of other better internationally approved options (liposomal doxorubicin and daunorubicin) makes them unaccesible for the majority of the population.

Mutation rates at Y chromosome specific microsatellites

A collaborative work was carried out by the Spanish and Portuguese ISFG Working Group (GEP-ISFG) to estimate Y-STR mutation rates. Seventeen Y chromosome STR loci (DYS19, DYS385, DYS389I and II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS437, DYS438, DYS439, DYS460, DYS461, DYS635 [GATA C4], GATA H4, and GATA A10) were analyzed in a sample of 3,026 father/son pairs. Among 27,029 allele transfers, 54 mutations were observed, with an overall mutation rate across the 17 loci of 1.998 x 10(-3) (95% CI, 1.501 x 10(-3) to 2.606 x 10(-3)). With just one exception, all of the mutations were single-step, and they were observed only once per gametogenesis. Repeat gains were more frequent than losses, longer alleles were found to be more mutable, and the mutation rate seemed to increase with the father's age. Hum Mutat 26(6), 520-528, 2005. Physiological and clinical effects of diurnal noninvasive ventilation in hypercapnic COPD

To assess the clinical impact of noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) on stable hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, changes in exercise capacity, dyspnoea and simple physiological parameters were evaluated. The time course of these effects during treatment and recovery was also assessed. Patients were randomly allocated to NIMV (n=27) or sham-NIMV (n=15), applied 3 h.day-1, 5 days a week, for 3 weeks. A 6-min walking distance (6MWD), arterial blood gases, spirometry, pattern of breathing, mouth occlusion pressure (P0.1), and respiratory system impedance (P0.1/tidal volume (VT)/inspiratory time (tI)) were measured weekly during treatment and 2 weekly during follow-up. Transition dyspnoea index (TDI) was also measured. During NIMV, carbon dioxide arterial tension decreased progressively, concomitantly with a slow deep pattern of breathing, a proportional increase in the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), the forced vital capacity and significant reductions of P0.1 and P0.1/VT/tI. The 6MWD improved by a mean of 76 m after NIMV, and by 73 m and 61 m 1 and 2 weeks, respectively, after treatment. Dyspnoea improved with a mean TDI of three points. Changes in 6MWD were highly related to TDI and to a lesser extent to changes in FEV1 (r=0.60). The current authors conclude that noninvasive mechanical ventilation has significant and sustained clinical impact in stable hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Intracellular distribution of copper and zinc in the liver of copper-exposed cattle from northwest Spain

The intracellular distribution of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the livers of normal and moderately Cu-exposed cattle was investigated with the aim of improving understanding of the pathophysiology of Cu accumulation in cattle. At total liver Cu concentrations within the generally accepted normal range (25-100 mg/kg fresh weight) the large-granule fraction was the main subcellular compartment for Cu accumulation, followed by the cytosol and the nucleus, whereas in the microsomal fraction Cu accumulation was very low. With increasing Cu exposure, the capacity of the large-granule fraction to accumulate Cu decreased, proceeding towards a plateau (estimated at about 80 mg/kg at a projected total liver Cu concentrations of 450 mg/kg), accompanied by progressively greater Cu accumulation in the nucleus and cytosol. Total liver Cu concentration had little influence on subcellular Zn distribution, with hepatic Cu concentrations being only moderately correlated with Zn concentration in the large-granule fraction. There was a strong association between the proportion of total Cu bound to metallothionein (MT) and the proportion of total Zn in the large-granule fraction, suggesting that Zn displaced from MT is taken up by the lysosomes for excretion. This pattern of Cu accumulation, as in sheep, may be due to the limited capacity for metallothionein binding of Cu and excretion in bile.

Use of short tandem repeats loci to study the genetic structure of several populations from Zulia State, Venezuela

Genetic relationships between populations can be studied by comparing genotypic and allelic similarities. This investigation aims to demonstrate that selected autosomal microsatellite markers could be used to study the genetic structures of different populations living in northwest Venezuela, in Zulia State. Seven autosomal systems (CSF1PO, TPOX, TH01, vWA, D7S820, D13S317, and D5S818) were tested by PCR in a multiplex format on 688 different chromosomes from unrelated individuals living in Maracaibo, "Isla de Toas," and "San José de Heras," and from two Amerindian populations from the "Sierra de Perijá," Barí' and Yukpa. Allele frequencies, Hardy-Weinberg equilibria, genetic distances, phylogenetic trees, and ethnic admixtures were estimated. The study shows the existence of a clear genetic difference among these populations in accordance with their historic evolution. The populations of Maracaibo and "Isla de Toas" showed a triracial origin, with a large European contribution, followed by an Amerindian component and a small African component. The indigenous groups, Barí' and Yukpa, showed exclusively an Amerindian component, and "San José de Heras" showed only an African component. These results indicate that microsatellite markers are useful for molecular anthropology in a regional and worldwide context and provide important genetic information about contemporary populations of Venezuela.

Plasma malonaldehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant status (TAS) during lactation in dairy cows

Metabolic profiles are widely used to monitor health, reproductive status and nutritional status. In the last few years, the evaluation of oxidative stress has contributed increasingly to our knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms involved in metabolic disorders, especially important in dairy cows, in which lactation imposes great physiological demands on the body's homeostatic mechanisms. The aim of the present study was to evaluate oxidative status in healthy cows during lactation (from lactation onset to peak lactation) using two parameters: (i) plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and (ii) total antioxidant status (TAS). Our results confirm that nutrition can influence the characteristic metabolic changes occurring between lactation onset and peak lactation. In addition, the combination of MDA and TAS can provide complementary information about the metabolic status of the cow. Thus, the proper metabolic adaptation to the onset of lactation, showed by metabolic profiles, contrasts with the high levels of free radicals which cause lipid peroxidation and high MDA values (68.99+/-33.64 microm/L) which is maintained only for a short period of time. In this moment, the antioxidant system can cope efficiently with lipoperoxide production. The most remarkable fact was the great inter-individual variations observed in MDA that might be studied in further investigations. When the animal reaches peak lactation, metabolic status is stabilized, and this is reflected by antioxidant status with mean values of 28.87+/-5.33 microm/L for MDA and 0.154+/-0.002 mmol/L for TAS values.

Advantages of binaural hearing provided through bimodal stimulation via a cochlear implant and a conventional hearing aid: a 6-month comparative study

CONCLUSIONS

Our study data demonstrate the additional benefit derived from continued use of a contralateral hearing aid (HA) post-cochlear implantation for speech recognition ability in quiet and in noise. Postoperative bimodal stimulation is recommended for all subjects who show some speech recognition ability in the contralateral ear as it may offer binaural listening advantages in various listening situations encountered in everyday life.

OBJECTIVES

To assess the benefits derived from bimodal stimulation for experienced HA users implanted with a cochlear implant (CI) (score=20% in disyllabic test). The correlation between pre- and postoperative performance on speech perception measures was examined to determine additional criteria for recommending bimodal stimulation postoperatively.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A within-subject repeated-measures design was used, with each subject acting as their own control. Assessments were carried out preoperatively in aided monaural and best-aided conditions and at 6 months postoperatively in CI-alone, contralateral HA-alone and bimodal listening conditions. Speech recognition using Spanish words and sentences materials was assessed at conversational level and for soft speech in quiet. Speech comprehension in noise was assessed using word materials at a signal:noise ratio of +10, for coincident speech in noise and for spatially separated speech in noise. Twelve adult native Spanish subjects with a severe-to-profound hearing impairment who were experienced with optimally fitted conventional amplification and who displayed suboptimal speech understanding preoperatively were enrolled in the study. Preoperatively, conventional amplification was worn by five subjects binaurally and by seven monaurally.

RESULTS

Postoperatively, superior speech recognition ability in quiet and in noise for disyllabic words was achieved using bimodal stimulation in comparison to performance for either monaural aided condition. Mean improvement in speech recognition in the bimodal condition was significant over performance in the CI-alone condition for disyllabic words in quiet at 70 (p=0.006) and 55 dB SPL (p=0.028), for disyllabic words in noise at +10 dB with speech and noise spatially separated with the noise source closest to the contralateral HA (S0NHA) (p=0.0005) and when the noise source was closest to the CI ear (S0NCI) (p=0.002). When testing word recognition in noise with speech and noise sources coincident in space, word scores were superior in the bimodal condition relative to the CI-alone condition but this improvement was not significant (p=0.07). The advantages of bimodal stimulation included significant effects of binaural summation in quiet and significant binaural squelch effects in both the S0NHA and S0NCI test conditions. All subjects showed superior performance in the binaural situation postoperatively relative to the best-aided condition preoperatively for one or more test situations.

Effects of moderate pollution on toxic and trace metal levels in calves from a polluted area of northern Spain

This study evaluated the contribution of anthropogenic pollution to toxic metal residues (Cd, Pb and As) in cattle in an industrialized area of Asturias (northern Spain), and investigated possible implications of toxic metal exposure for metabolism of essential metal elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn). Samples of liver, kidney, muscle and blood from animals aged 9-12 months were obtained from an industrialized area (78 calves) and from a rural area (92 calves). Samples were acid-digested, and levels of metals determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Cadmium and lead contents in the liver and kidney were moderately and significantly higher in calves from the industrialized area (Cd: liver 29.6, kidney 161; Pb: liver 38.1, kidney 38.3 microg/kg wet weight) than in calves from the rural area (Cd: liver 22.9, kidney 96.4; Pb: liver 20.7, kidney 15.9 microg/kg kg wet weight). Although these toxic metals were only moderately raised, our results suggest that they may nevertheless have interfered with trace element metabolism, as reported previously for severely polluted regions. Notably, copper levels in calves from the industrialized area were generally low, and nearly half of these animals showed tissue copper levels indicating risk of copper deficiency.

The role of metallothionein and zinc in hepatic copper accumulation in cattle

The role of metallothionein (MT) and zinc (Zn) in hepatic copper (Cu) accumulation in calves from a region in North-West Spain has been investigated. In this region there is intensive pig farming, and animals with liver Cu concentrations above normal are not uncommon. Concentrations of hepatic MT were not related to Cu accumulation but were strongly dependent on the Zn status of the animal. When analysing the metal content bound to MT it was observed that Cu-MT values, in the same way as Zn-MT, were directly correlated with MT concentrations in the liver, indicating that although Cu is a poor inducer of MT synthesis, it can compete with Zn for MT binding sites. The ability of Cu to displace Zn from MT is highly dependent on the Cu:Zn ratio in the cell, Cu being the main metal in MT at the higher levels of Cu exposure in Galician cattle. In spite of this, the percentage of the total hepatic Cu bound to MT is very low in these animals, indicating that cattle have a very limited capacity to accumulate Cu-MT in the liver, and may therefore have a greater susceptibility to Cu toxicosis.

Oxidative status during late pregnancy and early lactation in dairy cows

In the last few years, the detection of free radical damage and the body's defences against it have become increasingly important in clinical medicine as a complementary tool in the evaluation of metabolic status. The aim of this study was to evaluate, under field conditions, the anti-oxidant status of healthy cows during late pregnancy and lactation onset using two parameters: (1) plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a degradation product of lipid peroxidation, and (2) total antioxidant status (TAS). Results were compared with those obtained in another group of cows with lesser metabolic demands. We also investigated possible relationships between antioxidant status markers and other relevant blood parameters. Our results confirmed the characteristic metabolic changes associated with late pregnancy and early lactation. MDA and TAS provided an accurate reflection of the internal physiological status of the animal. The data indicated increased lipid peroxidation around parturition, but with wide individual variations that may be attributable not only to the physiological stage but also to unknown factors that will have to be further considered in future studies.

Modifications of 5-HT4 receptor expression in rat brain during memory consolidation

Pharmacological evidence indicates a specific role of 5-HT(4) receptors on memory function. These receptors are members of G-protein-coupled 7-transmembrane domain receptor superfamily, are positively coupled to adenylyl cyclase, and are heterogeneously located in some structures important for memory, such as the hippocampus and cortical regions. To further clarify 5-HT(4) receptors' role in memory, the expression of these receptors in passive (P3) untrained and autoshaping (A3) trained (3 sessions) adult (3 months) and old (P9 or A9; 9 months) male rats was determined by autoradiography. Adult trained (A3) rats showed a better memory respect to old trained (A9). Using [(3)H] GR113808 as ligand (0.2 nM specific activity 81 Ci/mmol) for 5-HT(4) receptor expression, 29 brain areas were analyzed, 16 areas of A3 and 17 of A9 animals displayed significant changes. The medial mammillary nucleus of A3 group showed diminished 5-HT(4) receptor expression, and in other 15 brain areas of A3 or 10 of A9 animals, 5-HT(4) receptors were increased. Thus, for A3 rats, 5-HT(4) receptors were augmented in olfactory lobule, caudate putamen, fundus striatum, CA2, retrosplenial, frontal, temporal, occipital, and cingulate cortex. Also, 5-HT(4) receptors were increased in olfactory tubercule, hippocampal CA1, parietal, piriform, and cingulate cortex of A9. However, hippocampal CA2 and CA3 areas, and frontal, parietal, and temporal cortex of A9 rats, expressed less 5-HT(4) receptors. These findings suggest that serotonergic activity, via 5-HT(4) receptors in hippocampal, striatum, and cortical areas, mediates memory function and provides further evidence for a complex and regionally specific regulation over 5-HT receptor expression during memory formation.

A real-time quantitative PCR comparative study between rat optic and sciatic nerves: determination of neuregulin-1 mRNA levels

Injured axons from peripheral nervous system (PNS) possess the ability to regenerate. In contrast, regeneration of injured axons does not occur in the central nervous system (CNS) or occurs to a limited extent. Previous works have shown that rat sciatic nerve conditioned medium (CM) produced PC12 cells neuronal-like differentiation and neurite outgrowth. In the present work, we compared the expression of neuregulin-1s (NRG-1s) from rat sciatic and optic nerves as members of the PNS and CNS, respectively. Sciatic nerve CM showed a higher neurotrophic activity on PC12 cells than rat optic nerve CM. RT-PCR analysis verified the presence of all three types of NRG-1 mRNAs and their receptors in both types of nerves. Real-time quantitative PCR (QPCR) assays showed that the relative expression levels of all three types of NRG-1 mRNAs were higher in optic nerves than in sciatic nerves. Eleven-day cultured optic nerves showed an increased in NDF and SMDF when compared to freshly isolated optic nerves, whereas GGF decreased. However, 11-day-cultured sciatic nerves only showed an increase in SMDF mRNA. Western blots corroborated the differences in NRG-1 expression profile for both types of nerves and their CMs. Incubation of both CMs with the anti-pan-NRG-1 antibody showed that the neurotrophic activity of the optic nerve CM increased, whereas the sciatic nerve CM remained unchanged. These results indicated that different NRG-1 levels are expressed upon nerve degeneration and the balance between those levels and other neurotrophic factors could have an important role on nerve regeneration.

Interactions between toxic (As, Cd, Hg and Pb) and nutritional essential (Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, Zn) elements in the tissues of cattle from NW Spain

Since the toxicity of one metal or metalloid can be dramatically modulated by the interaction with other toxic or essential metals, studies addressing the chemical interactions between trace elements are increasingly important. In this study correlations between the main toxic (As, Cd, Hg and Pb) and nutritional essential (Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, Zn) elements were evaluated in the tissues (liver, kidney and muscle) of 120 cattle from NW Spain, using Spearman rank correlation analysis based on analytical data obtained by ICP-AES. Although accumulation of toxic elements in cattle in this study is very low and trace essential metals are generally within the adequate ranges, there were significant associations between toxic and essential metals. Cd was positively correlated with most of the essential metals in the kidney, and with Ca, Co and Zn in the liver. Pb was significantly correlated with Co and Cu in the liver. A large number of significant associations between essential metals were found in the different tissues, these correlations being very strong between Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn in the kidney. Co was moderately correlated with most of the essential metals in the liver. In general, interactions between trace elements in this study were similar to those found in polluted areas or in experimental studies in animals receiving diets containing high levels of toxic metals or inadequate levels of nutritional essential elements. These interactions probably indicate that mineral balance in the body is regulated by important homeostatic mechanisms in which toxic elements compete with the essential metals, even at low levels of metal exposure. The knowledge of these correlations may be essential to understand the kinetic interactions of metals and their implications in the trace metal metabolism.

Expression of the 5-HT receptors in rat brain during memory consolidation

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) system displays more than 14 receptors subtypes on brain areas involved in learning and memory processes, and pharmacological manipulation of specific receptors selectively affects memory formation. In order to begin the search of 5-HT receptors expression during memory formation, in this work, we aimed to determine, by autoradiography (using 3H 5-HT as ligand, 2 nM, specific activity 123 Ci/mmol), 5-HT receptors (5-HTR) expression in passive (untrained) and autoshaping trained (3 sessions) adult (3 months) and old (9 months) male rats. Thus, trained adult rats had better retention than old animals. Raphe nuclei of adult and old trained rats expressed less receptors on medial and dorsal, respectively. Hippocampal CA1 area and dentate gyrus of adult trained rats expressed less 5-HTR, while dentate gyrus of old increased them. Basomedial amygdaloid nucleus in old trained rats expressed more 5-HTR; while in the basolateral amygdaloid nucleus they were augmented in both groups. Training decreased or did not change 5-HTR in caudate-putamen of adult or old animals. The above profile of 5-HTR expression is consistent with previous reports, and suggests that memory formation and aging modulates 5-HTR expression in brain areas relevant to memory systems.

Biological and Economic Optimum Level of Calcium in White Leghorn Laying Hens

Calcium is important in eggshell formation; inadequate levels in the diet of laying hens may affect shell quality and egg production. An experiment with 250 Leghorn Hy-Line W-98 hens was conducted to evaluate 5 dietary Ca levels (2.96, 3.22, 3.83, 4.31, and 4.82%) in 3 laying periods. The evaluated variables were egg production (EP), egg mass (EM), average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed conversion (FC), and specific gravity (SG). The biological optimum level (BOL) of Ca for maximum egg production and specific gravity, and the economic optimum level (EOL) to maximize profits were calculated. There was no interaction between Ca level and laying period. The results show that the Ca level of the diet (P < 0.05) affected the intake of this nutrient (3.34, 3.68, 4.26, 4.89, and 5.39 g bird/day), ADFI (113, 114, 111, 113, and 111 g bird/day), and SG (1.080, 1.081, 1.082, 1.083, and 1.083). As the hens aged, EP and SG diminished (P < 0.05). BOL for maximum EP and SG were 4.34 and 4.62%, and EOL was 4.38%.

Values of plasma lipid hydroperoxides and total antioxidant status in healthy dairy cows: preliminary observations

Abstract. Metabolic parameters have been used in an attempt to monitor the health, reproductive and nutritional status of dairy cows. Nevertheless, in the last few years the detection of free radical damage, and the protection against it has become very important in the practice of clinical medicine. This report aims to establish values for plasma lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) and total antioxidant status (TAS) in healthy cows and its relationship with milk yield. The study was carried out with 22 healthy dairy cows divided into two groups: animals with a low production rate and animals with a high milk yield. Results showed that the animals with a high milk yield present higher LOOH levels than the other group. This increase in oxidant compounds is not accompanied by higher levels in protective antioxidant substances. LOOH and TAS measurements give complementary information about the metabolic status of the animal than metabolic parameters alone.
