Abstract
The primary objective of aneurysm repair is to prevent aneurysm rupture while avoiding aneurysm-related death. This manuscript reviews the primary and secondary outcome measures following endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) in relation to similar outcome measures for open surgical repair. Both EVAR and open repair are effective in preventing aneurysm rupture, although late ruptures can occur with either treatment method. The late risk of rupture following EVAR is less that 1% per year using current endovascular devices. Aneurysm-related death rate appears to be lower following EVAR compared to open surgery, primarily due to a lower perioperative mortality rate. Actuarial 5-year survival after both endovascular and open aneurysm repair is approximately 70%. Perioperative outcome measures favor EVAR over open repair for patients with suitable anatomy with reduced morbidity and more rapid patient recovery. Short and long-term outcomes following endovascular repair compare favorably to open repair. However, prospective studies are needed to better define the long-term outcomes using comparable endpoints.

Abstract
Naringenin, dietary flavonoid, is antioxidant constituents of many citrus fruits. In the present study, we investigated the effect of naringenin on 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)-inducible CYP1A1 gene expression in mouse hepatoma Hepa-1c1c7 cells. Naringenin alone did not affect CYP1A1-specific 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity. In contrast, the TCDD-inducible EROD activities were markedly reduced upon concomitant treatment with TCDD and naringenin in a dose dependent manner. TCDD-induced CYP1A1 mRNA level was also markedly suppressed by naringenin. A transient transfection assay using dioxin-response element (DRE)-linked luciferase and electrophoretic mobility shift assay revealed that naringenin reduced transformation of the aryl hydrocarbons receptor(AhR) to a form capable of specifically binding to the DRE sequence in the promoter of the CYP1A1 gene. These results suggest the down regulation of the CYP1A1 gene expression by either naringenin in Hepa-1c1c7 cells might be antagonism of the DRE binding potential of nuclear AhR.

Abstract
Rutaecarpine is an alkaloid originally isolated from the unripe fruit of Evodia rutaecarpa. Recently, rutaecarpine has been characterized to have an anti-inflammatory activity through cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition. In the present studies, the effects of rutaecarpine on liver cytochrome P450 s (P450s) and P450 s involved in the metabolism of rutaecarpine were studied in vivo and in vitro, respectively, because the data are crucial in the early development of rutaecarpine as a new drug candidate. Oral administration to male ICR mice of rutaecarpine for 3 consecutive days induced liver P450 1A-, 2B- and 2E1-selective monooxygenase activities. The induction of P450 1A and 2B by rutaecarpine was confirmed by Western immunoblotting. When rutaecarpine was incubated with rat liver microsomes in the presence of an NADPH-generating system, five metabolites were detected by UV and mass spectral analyses. The 3-methylcholanthrene- and phenobarbital-induced microsomes greatly increased the formation of metabolites. Our present results suggest that rutaecarpine might induce P450 1A and 2B in mice, and that P450 1A and 2B might predominantly metabolize rutaecarpine in rat liver microsomes.

Abstract
This study evaluated the Korean version of the EORTC QLQ-C30 (version 3.0) in terms of psychometric properties and its validation. One hundred and seventy patients completed three questionnaires EORTC QLQ-C30, the Beck depression inventory (BDI), and a brief pain inventory (BPI). Multitrait scaling analyses demonstrated that all scales met multidimensional conceptualization criteria, in terms of convergence and discrimination validity. Cronbach's alpha coefficients for eight multiple-item scales were greater than 0.70, with the exception of cognitive functioning. All interscale correlations were statistically significant in the expected direction (p < 0.01). Multivariate analyses showed that physical and emotional functioning were significant explanatory variables for the global quality-of-life (QOL) scale (regression coefficients: 0.36, p < 0.001; and 0.37, p < 0.001; respectively). All scales were significantly associated with pain severity and interference of the BPI, and with the cognitive-affective and somatic scales of the BDI. The emotional-functioning scale was substantially correlated with the cognitive-affective scale and somatic scale of the BDI. These results demonstrate that the Korean version of the EORTC QLQ-C30 is a valid instrument for evaluating Korean-speaking patients with cancer, and can be used to distinguish clearly between subgroups of patients of differing performance status.

Abstract
KIT is expressed not only in tumors derived from hematopoietic stem cells, melanocytes, germ cells, mast cells, and interstitial cells of Cajal, but also in other malignancies such as chromophobe renal cell carcinoma. This pattern of KIT expression prompted us to investigate the expression and mutation of c-kit gene exons 9, 11, 13, 17, and intron 17 in the different subtypes of renal cell carcinomas (n=66) and non-neoplastic kidneys (n=12). We found that KIT showed strong immunoreactivity in the cytoplasm of papillary renal cell carcinomas (100%), but on the cell membranes of chromophobe renal cell carcinomas (100%). Interestingly, a specific point mutation of the c-kit intron 17 (T->A) was found only in papillary renal cell carcinomas (94%). Our study demonstrates that the expression pattern and one mutation of c-kit may distinguish papillary renal cell carcinomas.

Abstract
Inspection outcome data provided by the state of Washington Department of Health, Division of Radiation Protection, for licensees of radioactive materials was encoded according to a system established by the Texas Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control. The data, representing calendar year 1999 inspection activities, were then analyzed and the results compared to previously published studies for the same year in the states of Texas and Maine. Despite significant differences in regulatory program size, age, and geographic proximity, the most frequently cited violation for radioactive materials licensees were shown to be similar for all three states. Of particular note were the violations that were identified to be consistently issued in all three states. These included physical inventories and utilization logs not performed, not available, or incomplete; leak testing not performed or not performed on schedule; inadequate or unapproved operating and safety procedures; radiation survey and disposal records not available or incomplete; detection or measurement instrument calibration not performed or records not available; and radiation surveys or sampling not performed or performed with a noncalibrated instrument. Comparisons were made in an attempt to generate a summary of the most commonly issued violations that could be generalized to users of radioactive materials across the United States. A generalized list of common violations would be an invaluable tool for radiation protection programs, serving to aid in the reduction of the overall instance of program non-compliance. Any reduction in instances of non-compliance would result in the conservation of finite public health resources that might then be directed to other pressing public health matters.

Abstract
In the present studies, the acute toxic effects of 2-bromopropane (2-BP) and its analog, 1,2-dibromopropane (1,2-DBP), were investigated in female BALB/c mice. The mice were treated orally with either 2-BP at 2000 and 4000 mg/kg or 1,2-DBP at 300 and 600 mg/kg. Four days before necropsy, the mice were immunized intraperitoneally with sheep red blood cells (SRBCs). 1,2-DBP reduced the weights of the spleen and thymus weights and decreased the number of splenic cells. In addition, treatment with 1,2-DBP suppressed the antibody response to SRBCs. Meanwhile, only the antibody response was significantly suppressed by treatment with 2-BP. In the subsequent studies, the time course effects of 2-BP and 1,2-DBP on the hepatotoxic parameters were compared in female BALB/c mice. When mice were treated orally with either one of these chemicals for 6, 12, 24 and 48 h, the activities of serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase elevated significantly only with 1,2-DBP 24 h after the treatment. The hepatic content of glutathione was reduced by 1,2-DBP. Meanwhile, these parameters were increased by 2-BP. The present results suggest that 1,2-DBP in the Solvent 5200 also contributes to the immnunotoxicity, although 2-BP is a major component.

Abstract
Identifying zones of sulphide oxidation and carbonate buffering is important in the development of a management plan for mine waste-rock piles. In this study, we used a kinetic cell technique to measure rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production in low sulphide (<0.12 wt.% S), low inorganic carbon (<0.20 wt.% C(inorganic)), gneissic waste rock and associated organic-rich lake sediment (0.7 wt.% C(organic)), and forest soil (1.4 wt.% C(organic)) collected from the Key Lake uranium mine in Saskatchewan, Canada. Solid chemistry, stable carbon isotope, pore water sulphate concentration data, and stoichiometric considerations indicated that O2 consumption and CO2 production were constrained by microbial respiration in the lake sediment and forest soil and by pyrite oxidation-carbonate buffering in the gneissic waste rock. Mean ratios of molar CO2 production to O2 consumption rates were 0.5 for lake sediment, 0.7 for forest soil, and 0.2 for gneissic waste rock. The different O2/CO2 ratios suggested that O2-CO2 monitoring may provide a practical tool for identifying the zones of microbial respiration and pyrite oxidation-carbonate buffering in mine waste-rock piles. Rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production were about one order of magnitude greater in lake sediment than in gneissic waste rock, indicating that microbial respiration would exert a control on the distribution of O2 and CO2 gas in waste-rock piles constructed upon the dewatered lake sediments.

Abstract
Neurofibromatosis type 1 is characterized by cutaneous neurofibromas and pigmented lesions of the skin called café au lait spots. Although neurofibromatosis type 1 represents a major risk factor for the development of malignancy, especially of nervous system tumors, malignant lymphoma rarely occurs in a patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. Recently, a 77-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 was diagnosed as non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (diffuse large B cell). She had multiple café au lait spots, neurofibromas and right axillary lymph node enlargement. An abdominal CT scan demonstrated a left pelvic mass and para-aortic lymphadenopathy. Because non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in a neurofibromatosis patient has never been reported in Korea, herein, we describe this case and include a review of the literature.

Abstract
Molecular oxygen (O2) in unsaturated geologic sediments plays an important role in soil respiration, biodegradation of organic contaminants, metal oxidation, and global oxygen and carbon cycling, yet little is known about oxygen isotope fractionation during the consumption and transport of O2 in unsaturated zones. We used a laboratory kinetic cell technique to quantify isotope fractionation due to respiration and a numerical model to quantify both consumptive and diffusive fractionation of O2 isotopes at a field site comprised of unsaturated lacustrine sandy materials. The combined use of laboratory-based kinetic cell experiments and field-based isotope transport modeling provided an effective tool to characterize microbial respiration in unsaturated media. Based on results from the closed-system kinetic cells, O2 consumption and isotope fractionation were attributed to the alternative cyanide-resistant respiration pathway. At the field site, the modeled depth profiles for O2 and delta18O matched the measured in situ data and confirmed that the consumption of O2 was via the alternative respiration pathway. If the cyanide-resistant respiration pathway is indeed widespread in soils, its high oxygen isotope enrichment factor could help to explain the discrepancy between the predicted present-day Dole effect (+20.8/1000) and the observed Dole effect (+23.5/1000). Thus, further soil O2 isotope studies are needed to better characterize and model the fractionation of oxygen isotopes during subsurface respiration and the potential impact on the isotopic content of atmospheric O2.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is characterized by clubbing and periosteal new bone formation along the shaft of the long bones of the extremities. Although various intrathoracic malignancies have been associated with the development of HOA, it has been extremely rare for HOA to occur in a patient with a thymic carcinoma. Recently, we experienced a 63-year-old woman diagnosed as a thymic carcinoma with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. She had both digital clubbing and cortical thickening in her lower extremities identified radiologically. We herein describe this case with a review of the literature.

Abstract
Although potassium permanganate (KMnO4) flushing is commonly used to destroy chlorinated solvents in groundwater, many of the problems associated with this treatment scheme have not been examined in detail. We conducted a KMnO4 flushing experiment in a large sand-filled flow tank (L x W x D = 180 cm x 60 cm x 90 cm) to remove TCE emplaced as a DNAPL in a source zone. The study was specifically designed to investigate cleanup progress and problems of pore plugging associated with the dynamics of the solid-phase reaction front (i.e., MnO2) using chemical and optical monitoring techniques. Ambient flow through the source zone formed a plume of dissolved TCE across the flow tank. The volume and concentration of TCE plume diminished with time because of the in situ oxidation of the DNAPL source. The migration velocity of the MnO2 reaction front decreased with time, suggesting that the kinetics of the DNAPL oxidation process became diffusion-controlled because of the pore plugging. A mass balance calculation indicated that only approximately 18% of the total applied KMnO4 (MnO4- = 1250 mg/ L) participated in the oxidation reaction to destroy approximately 41% of emplaced TCE. Evidently, the efficiency of KMnO4 flushing scheme diminished with time due to pore plugging by MnO2 and likely CO2, particularly in the TCE source zone. In addition, the excess KMnO4 used for flushing may cause secondary aquifer contamination. One needs to be concerned about the efficacy of KMnO4 flushing in the field applications. Development of a new approach that can provide both contaminant destruction and plugging/ MnO4- control is required.

Abstract
The prevalence of asthma has been on the increase in the USA and worldwide. To understand the worsening epidemiological trends of asthma, this study analysed the data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) to determine the prevalence and risk factors for asthma and wheezing among US adults. This analysis used data from 18,825 US adults aged > or = 20 yrs who had participated in the NHANES III project. After excluding subjects with physician-diagnosed emphysema, a total of 18,393 subjects were included in the final analysis. The prevalence of current asthma (asthma) was 4.5% and the prevalence of wheezing in the previous 12 months (wheezing) was 16.4%. Mexican-Americans exhibited the lowest prevalence of asthma when compared with other race/ethnic groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that Mexican-Americans were less likely to report asthma when compared to non-Hispanic whites. Low education level, female sex, current and past smoking status, pet ownership, lifetime diagnosis of physician-diagnosed hay fever and obesity were all significantly associated with asthma and/or wheezing. No significant effect of indoor air pollutants, as derived from the use of household heating/cooking appliances, on asthma and wheezing was observed in this study. In conclusion, this study observed racial/ethnic differences in the prevalence of asthma and wheezing and identified several important risk factors that may contribute to development and/or exacerbation of asthma and wheezing. Contrary to earlier reports, the proxy measures of indoor air pollution used in this study were not found to be associated with increased risk of asthma and wheezing.

Abstract
Certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been reported to induce cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1 and 1A2. In the present study, the effects of six well-known PAHs, such as benzo[a]pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[k]fluorancene and benzo[b]fluorancene, on the activities of hepatic and pulmonary CYP enzymes were investigated in male ICR mice. When mice were treated intraperitoneally with 3, 10 and 30 mg/kg of individual PAHs for 3 consecutive days, the activities of ethoxyresorufin- and methoxyresorufin-O-dealkylases were significantly and differentially induced in both liver and lung. Moreover, other CYP isozyme-associated monooxygenase activities were also induced significantly in liver and lung with characteristic induction profiles. Our present results suggest that individual PAHs might have inductive effects on CYP isozymes, and that the characteristic inductive effects of individual PAHs on certain CYP isozymes would be developed as a marker for determining exposure to certain PAHs.

Abstract
In order to develop a culture system and recipient cytoplasm that could improve the developmental competence of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryos for successful cloning of pigs, we evaluated the effect of donor oocytes and in vitro maturation (IVM) media on maturation of oocytes and developmental competence of SCNT embryos. In Experiment 1, oocytes derived from sows or gilts were matured in two IVM media (TCM-199 versus NCSU-23) and maturation of oocytes was evaluated by the status of chromatin configuration, the diameter of matured oocytes, the thickness of the zona pellucida, and the size of the perivitelline space (PVS). Sow oocytes matured in TCM-199 (S-TCM group) and NCSU-23 (S-NCSU group) showed significantly higher (P<0.05) maturation rates (S-TCM and S-NSCU, 86+/-4 and 82+/-4%, respectively) when evaluated by metaphase-II status than the gilt oocytes matured in TCM-199 (G-TCM group, 71+/-3%) and in NCSU-23 (G-NCSU-23 group, 71+/-3%). Oocyte diameter, the thickness of the zona pellucida, and the perivitelline space of sow oocytes (S-TCM and S-NCSU) were larger than those of gilt oocytes (G-TCM and G-NCSU) after IVM (P<0.05). In Experiment 2, SCNT was performed, using in vitro-matured oocytes from each group as recipient cytoplasm and porcine fetal fibroblasts as karyoplasts. The reconstructed embryos were electrically fused and activated, and cleavage and blastocyst formation were monitored under a stereomicroscope. The total cell number of flattened blastocysts stained with 5 microM bisbenzimide on day 7 were counted. In addition, in vitro matured non-enucleated oocytes were also electrically activated (parthenogenetic activation) and pronuclear formation was monitored. No difference in pronuclear formation rate after parthenogenetic activation and fusion rate after SCNT was observed among experimental groups. A significantly higher cleavage rate (P<0.05) was observed in S-TCM (69+/-4%) when compared with only G-NCSU (58+/-4%), but not with G-TCM (60+/-4%) or S-NCSU (68+/-4%). The rate of blastocyst formation was significantly higher (P<0.05) in sow oocytes (24% in S-TCM and S-NCSU), when compared to that observed in G-TCM (15%), and G-NCSU (14%). When the same source of oocytes was used, there was no significant difference in rate of blastocyst formation in the two culture media. Total cell number of blastocysts were not significantly different among experimental groups. In conclusion, the present study clearly demonstrated that sow oocytes have a greater developmental competence than gilt oocytes, regardless of the maturation medium examined.

Abstract
We randomly selected 50 cervical smears (benign, 14; atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance [ASCUS], 5; low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion [LSIL], 10; high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), 12; squamous cell carcinoma, 6; adenocarcinoma, 3) and captured 1,181 digital images (518 MB) at a maximum resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels and transmitted them by e-mail. Diagnosis of glass slides and digital images was done independently in a double-blind manner by 3 pathologists and 3 cytotechnologists, commencing with the diagnosis of digital images followed by diagnosis of glass slides 3 months later. The procedure was repeated after 3 months. Diagnoses were recorded as benign, ASCUS or atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance, LSIL, HSIL, squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma, and "inadequate for diagnosis." Diagnostic accuracy and interobserver reproducibility were analyzed using an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), which revealed good interobserver agreement for the first (0.72) and second (0.64) glass slide diagnoses and the first (0.72) and second (0.60) digital image diagnoses. The kappa values for intraobserver variation between first and second glass slide diagnoses and first and second digital image diagnoses showed moderate to excellent agreement. Digital images are suitable substitutes for glass slides; telecytology can be used as an alternative method for the cytologic diagnosis of cervical smears, particularly in quality assurance programs.

Abstract
In situ determinations of geochemical reaction rates in mine waste-rock piles remain a challenge. Depth-profiles of field O2 and CO2 pore-gas concentrations, delta13C(CO2) values, and moisture contents were used to characterize and quantify geochemical reaction rates in two waste-rock piles at the Key Lake Uranium Mine in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Traditionally, the presence of O2 concentrations less than atmospheric in waste-rock piles has been attributed to mineral oxidation. This study showed that the interpretation of O2 and CO2 concentration profiles alone could not be used to identify the depths of dominant geochemical reactions in the piles and could lead to erroneous estimates of reaction rates. Modeling of the delta13C(CO2) depth profiles clearly showed that the gas concentration profiles present in the piles were the result of the oxidation of organic matter present below the piles, a mechanism not previously reported in the literature. Based on these findings, the rates of reactions in the organic zone were determined. The oxidation of organic matter at the base of waste-rock piles should be considered in future mine-waste pore-gas studies, in addition to sulfide oxidation and carbonate buffering.

Abstract
Small tentacles or separated nests of squamous cells in the dermis are not uncommonly seen in long-standing vulvar lichen sclerosus (LS) associated with epidermal thickening. We recently encountered a case where separated nests of well-differentiated squamous cells in the dermis were difficult to distinguish from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Further biopsies showed similar nests originating from every hair follicle. We postulated a diagnosis of multifocal pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH) to explain this phenomenon. Because we could find no reference to PEH in the setting of LS, we reviewed the biopsies of 92 women with extragenital and vulvar LS with and without carcinoma to determine its frequency and histological appearance. The study population, which excluded the index case, comprised 10 women with extra-anogenital LS, 58 with vulvar LS without carcinoma, and 24 with vulvar LS with carcinoma. The presence of PEH, epidermal thickness, predominant dermal collagen change, degree of inflammation, and presence of fibrin and red blood cells were recorded. The presence or absence of lichen simplex chronicus (LSC), squamous cell hyperplasia (SCH), and differentiated vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) were recorded. PEH was identified only in vulvar LS, where it was seen in 7/58 (12.1%) women without carcinoma, 1/24 (8.3%) with carcinoma, and 0/10 (0%) with extra-anogenital LS. Two forms of PEH were seen: predominantly epidermal 7/8 (87.5%) and predominantly follicular 1/8 (12.5%). PEH was associated with increased epidermal thickness, less dermal edema, more dermal inflammation, fresh fibrin, and red blood cell extravasation. In all cases, there was associated LSC, but there was no SCH or differentiated VIN. In conclusion, PEH may explain many of the cases of dermal tentacles and separated squamous nests in vulvar LS with LSC. The association with fresh fibrin and red blood cells suggests that PEH might be a reaction to tissue damage. PEH is distinguished from SCC by its lack of atypia, confinement to the abnormal collagen, and limited growth. The pathologist must be careful about making a diagnosis of PEH in LS with epidermal thickening, looking carefully for basal atypia and other features of differentiated VIN in the overlying epidermis or dermal proliferation. We do not know whether PEH occurs in differentiated VIN and, if it does, how it could be distinguished from SCC.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to better understand how to increase collagen content in and enhance mechanical properties of tissue-equivalents formed by entrapping tissue cells in fibrin gels, with the ultimate goal of developing mechanically robust artificial tissues. The two main areas of focus were cell culture medium composition and replacement frequency relative to a base case of incubating constructs in medium supplemented with just serum and replaced weekly. The optimal condition involved a combination of all three factors investigated-TGF-beta, insulin, plasmin-with medium replacement three times a week. Compared to a base case without these three factors, the combination case resulted in 20 times more collagen and a ten-fold increase in tensile strength. The high strain modulus and tensile strength were within an order of magnitude of cardiovascular tissues. This study indicates great potential for fibrin-based tissue-equivalents in soft connective tissue applications.

Abstract
Heat-induced antigen retrieval in a variety of solutions has been shown to enhance the immunoreactivity of a wide range of antigens in routine formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Accurate time and temperature control is important for standardization and optimization of the procedure but is difficult to achieve. This study used a device to attain precise time and temperature control for antigen retrieval at 120 degrees C under 1.9 bar pressure. It compares the efficacy of this method with antigen retrieval in a conventional pressure cooker, by microwave heating at 98 degrees C, and ultrasound retrieval at 40 and 70 W for 40 and 100 seconds. Multitissue and multitumor blocks containing a spectrum of normal tissues and a variety of tumors, respectively, were used, and 42 routine diagnostic antibodies were applied with a standard peroxidase conjugated streptavidin technique. Sections in which antigen retrieval was not performed served as controls. The three heat-induced methods showed distinctly better immunostaining for all antigens compared with those obtained with ultrasound retrieval. The latter method did not produce consistent staining and intensity, and the extent of staining was only marginally better than sections not subjected to antigen retrieval. Superheating at 120 degrees C produced the best overall results with the exception of antibodies to cytokeratin clones Cam 5.2, AE1/3, and 34BE12 in which superheating resulted in slightly inferior immunostaining compared with heating in a pressure cooker and at 98 degrees C.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To estimate the prevalence of work related asthma and work related wheezing in United States workers. To identify high risk industries that could be targeted for future intervention. To determine the population attributable risk of work related asthma and work related wheezing. METHODS The third national health and nutrition examination survey, 1988-1994 (NHANES III) was analyzed to determine the prevalence of work related asthma and wheezing and to identify initially defined industries at risk among United States workers aged 20 and older. Separate logistic models were developed with work related asthma and work related wheezing as outcomes. Work related asthma was defined as affirmative response to questions on self reported physician diagnosed asthma and work related symptoms of rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. Work related wheezing was defined as affirmative response to questions on self reported wheezing or whistling in the chest in the previous 12 months and work related symptoms of rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. All analyses were adjusted for age, sex, smoking, and atopy. RESULTS The prevalence of work related asthma was 3.70% (95% confidence interval (95% CI) 2.88 to 4.52) and the prevalence of work related wheezing was 11.46% (95% CI 9.87 to 13.05). The main industries identified at risk of work related asthma and wheeze included the entertainment industry; agriculture, forestry, and fishing; construction; electrical machinery; repair services; and lodging places. The population attributable risk for work related asthma was 36.5% and work related wheezing was 28.5%. CONCLUSIONS The findings provide impetus for further research and actions by public health professionals which prioritise occupational asthma on the public health agenda. Future intervention strategies need to be developed for effective control and prevention of asthma in the workplace.

Abstract
Digital camera technology has developed rapidly and a large choice of reasonably priced, user-oriented models are now available. These can be used for both macroscopic and microscopic photography with good resolution. Internet transmission of digital images also makes it possible to consult pathologists anywhere in the world. This study tests a simple, fast, and inexpensive method for practical transmission of images for diagnosis using a digital camera and the Internet. Using a commercial digital camera mounted with a phototube adapter to a light microscope (6 images per case on average), 2210 digital images (310 Mb) from 347 cases of gastrointestinal, lung, and uterus specimens were captured. Each image, stored in medium compression JPEG (Joint Photographers Experts Group) format with 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, required approximately 5 seconds to capture after the case had been reviewed and appropriate fields for imaging selected (30 seconds per case on average). The images were transmitted from Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, to Korea University Hospital, Seoul, and John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, Australia. Transmission was 100% successful with a total upload time of 3 hours for 310 MB of data (31 seconds per case on average). The images were downloaded in 2 hours and viewed on a 17-inch color monitor with a maximal resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. Telepathology diagnoses were made with 95% and 97% concurrence by two pathologists at Korea University Hospital and John Hunter Hospital, respectively. We suggest that the current level of commercial technology yields fast, convenient and economical tools for practical telepathology diagnosis.
