Abstract
The F(1) hybrid of autoimmune hemolytic anemia-prone NZB and nonautoimmune NZW strains of mice has been studied as a murine model of systemic lupus erythematosus. Both NZB and F(1) hybrid mice show age-dependent spontaneous activation of peripheral CD4(+) T cells as reflected by the elevated frequencies of CD4(+) T cells positive for CD69 early activation marker. Both strains also show age-dependent abnormal decrease of the frequencies of CD62L(+) naive CD4(+) T cells and/or NTA260(+) memory CD4(+) T cells in the spleen. We studied the multigenic control of these abnormal features of peripheral CD4(+) T cells in (NZB x NZW) F(1) x NZW backcross mice by quantitative trait loci mapping and by association rule analysis. The abnormally elevated frequencies of CD69(+)CD4(+) T cells and decreased frequencies of CD62L(+) naive and/or NTA260(+) memory CD4(+) T cells were under the common genetic control, in which the interaction between MHC and a hitherto unknown locus, designated Sta-1 (spontaneous T-cell activation) on chromosome 12, plays a major role. The allelic effects of these loci likely predispose CD4(+) T cells to the loss of self-tolerance, and are responsible for the accelerated autoimmune phenotypes of (NZB x NZW) F(1) hybrid mice.

Abstract
The authors examined the neural function of a postmeningitic deaf-blind patient who regained his hearing with a multichannel cochlear implant. Auditory stimuli activated the temporal cortices of both sides in a manner similar to that of controls, reflecting the successful recruitment of the auditory cortex after implantation. The patient's occipital lobes were deactivated during the tactile language task, the results of which were completely different from those before cochlear implantation.

Abstract
In this paper we present Hugoniot data for plastic foams obtained with laser-driven shocks. Relative equation-of-state data for foams were obtained using Al as a reference material. The diagnostics consisted in the detection of shock breakout from double layer Al/foam targets. The foams [poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) with density 130 > rho > 60 mg/cm3] were produced at the Institute of Laser Engineering of Osaka University. The experiment was performed using the Prague PALS iodine laser working at 0.44 microm wavelength and irradiances up to a few 10(14) W/cm2. Pressures as high as 3.6 Mbar (previously unreached for such low-density materials) where generated in the foams. Samples with four different values of initial density were used, in order to explore a wider region of the phase diagram. Shock acceleration when the shock crosses the Al/foam interface was also measured.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine the effects of a mucolytic drug, carbocisteine, on rhinovirus (RV) infection in the airways. Human tracheal epithelial cells were infected with a major-group RV, RV14. RV14 infection increased virus titres and the cytokine content of supernatants. Carbocisteine reduced supernatant virus titres, the amount of RV14 RNA in cells, cell susceptibility to RV infection and supernatant cytokine concentrations, including interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8, after RV14 infection. Carbocisteine reduced the expression of mRNA encoding intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, the receptor for the major group of RVs. It also reduced the supernatant concentration of a soluble form of ICAM-1, the number and fluorescence intensity of acidic endosomes in the cells before RV infection, and nuclear factor-kappaB activation by RV14. Carbocisteine also reduced the supernatant virus titres of the minor group RV, RV2, although carbocisteine did not reduce the expression of mRNA encoding a low density lipoprotein receptor, the receptor for RV2. These results suggest that carbocisteine inhibits rhinovirus 2 infection by blocking rhinovirus RNA entry into the endosomes, and inhibits rhinovirus 14 infection by the same mechanism as well as by reducing intercellular adhesion molecule-1 levels. Carbocisteine may modulate airway inflammation by reducing the production of cytokines in rhinovirus infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Surgical management of extrahepatic cholestasis is frequently complicated by bacterial translocation and severe liver injury. The aim of this study was to clarify the involvement of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the pathogenesis of bacterial translocation and liver injury in obstructive cholestasis. METHODS TLR2 deficient (TLR2(-/-)), MyD88(-/-), Jalpha281(-/-), gld/gld, and lpr/lpr mice, all of which have a C57BL/6 background, and C3H/HeN and TLR4 mutated C3H/HeJ mice were subjected to bile duct ligation (BDL). Faecal IgA and serum alanine aminotransferase levels were determined after BDL. Apoptosis was examined by histological and flow cytometric analyses of cells from Peyer's patches and the liver. RESULTS The size and number of B cells in Peyer's patches markedly decreased on day 3 after BDL. Increased apoptosis in Peyer's patch B cells was evident on day 1 after BDL in control mice but not in lpr/lpr, MyD88(-/-), or C3H/HeJ mice. On the other hand, TLR2 and Fas ligand expression on intrahepatic NK1.1(+) T cells increased on day 1 after BDL in C57BL/6 mice. Liver injury and apoptosis were evident on day 1 after BDL in control and C3H/HeJ mice but were significantly reduced in TLR2(-/-), Jalpha281(-/-), gld/gld, and lpr/lpr mice. CONCLUSIONS TLR4 and TLR2 may play important roles in Fas dependent apoptosis in Peyer's patch B cells and hepatocytes, respectively, at an early stage after BDL in mice.

Abstract
A 7-month-old girl was referred to us for further examination of absence of the right pulmonary artery. She had no symptom at that time. Diagnosis was made by chest computed tomography (CT) and cardiac catheterization. Though the size of the right pulmonary artery was not apparent, right pulmonary vein wedge angiography revealed the distal portion of right pulmonary artery sufficient for surgical repair. But the distance between the pulmonary trunk and right pulmonary artery was too far to perform direct anastomosis, and some systemic collaterals had already been recognized. Pulmonary vasculature was also not inadequate. Therefore we planned a palliative procedure. At the age of 7 months, right modified Blalock-Tausig shunt using 5mm expand-polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) tube and angioplasty of the distal portion of right pulmonary artery using autologous pericardium roll with Dacron mesh was performed. Postoperative course was uneventful. She has been followed up for 6 months after the palliation. In the near future the completion of the definitive repair will be considered.

Abstract
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by the defects in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene. Individuals homozygous for defective PAH alleles show elevated levels of systemic phenylalanine and should be under strict dietary control to reduce the risk of neuronal damage associated with high levels of plasma phenylalanine. Researchers predict that plant phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), which converts phenylalanine to nontoxic t-cinnamic acid, will be an effective therapeutic enzyme for the treatment of PKU. The problems of this potential enzyme therapy have been the low stability in the circulation and the antigenicity of the plant enzyme. Recombinant PAL originated from parsley (Petroselinum crispum) chemically conjugated with activated PEG2 [2,4-bis(O-methoxypolyethyleneglycol)-6-chloro-s-triazine] showed greatly enhanced stability in the circulation and was effective in reducing the plasma concentration of phenylalanine in the circulation of mice. PEG-PAL conjugate will be an effective therapeutic enzyme for the treatment of PKU.

Abstract
An adult case of extralobar pulmonary sequestration with aberrant lobulation of the right lower lobe is reported. A 32-year-old woman admitted to our hospital with a right intrathoracic tumor in the chest computed tomography (CT). Chest CT showed a mass lesion on the right diaphragm of a diameter 5 cm and abnormal fissure of the right lower lobe. Under the diagnosis of pulmonary sequestration without clearly thick vessels, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was performed. The mass existed between the right diaphragm and posterior lower lobe with a thin stalk, and the lower lobe had aberrant lobulation. The resected mass was histopathologically diagnosed as extralobar pulmonary sequestration.

Abstract
The effect of Lactobacillus reuteri against one of the major cariogenic organism, Streptococcus mutans, was studied. Yogurt products containing L.reuteri showed a significant growth inhibitory effect against S. mutans, whilst yoghurts with lactobaccilli other than L. reuteri did not show such inhibition. Further, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that consuming yogurt with L. reuteri significantly reduced the oral carriage of mutans streptococci, compared with the placebo yogurt.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma exacerbations are frequently associated with rhinovirus (RV) infections. However, the contribution of airway submucosal gland (SMG) to exacerbations of asthma in RV respiratory infection has not been studied. OBJECTIVE This study was undertaken to examine whether RV-infected human respiratory SMG cells produce pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines for eosinophils, and augment eosinophil transmigration across human airway epithelium. METHODS We infected cultured human tracheal SMG cells with RV14, collected culture media at 1, 3, and 5 days after infection, and measured the chemotactic activity for eosinophils in the culture supernatant using a 48-well microchemotaxis chamber and a (51)Cr-labelled eosinophil transmigration assay. RESULTS Exposing a confluent human tracheal SMG cell monolayer to RV14 consistently led to infection. Human SMG cells with RV infection secreted soluble factors activating human eosinophil chemotaxis into the culture supernatant in a time-dependent manner, and the culture supernatant significantly augmented the transmigration of (51)Cr-labelled eosinophils through human airway epithelial cell layers from the basal to mucosal side. These effects were completely abolished by a mixture of a monoclonal antibody regulated on activation, normal T cells expressed and secreted (RANTES) and an antibody to granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF). CONCLUSION These results suggest that human respiratory SMG cells may augment eosinophil transmigration across the airway epithelium through the secretion of RANTES and GM-CSF after RV infection, and may contribute to exacerbations of asthma.
