[Astragalus induces human amniotic epithelial cells (WISH) to differentiate toward neurons, inhibits the expression of Notch1 and promotes cell survival]

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of astragalus on differentiation of human amniotic epithelial cell line WISH into neurons, the expression of Notch1 gene and cell viability. WISH were randomly divided into astragalus group (4 subgroups), alltransretinoic acid (RA) group and control group. Astragalus group and RA group were induced to differentiate into neurocytes by using chemical inducer RA and astragalus, respectively. The expression of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), microtubule associated protein 2 (MAP-2), Nestin and GFAP of induced cells in three groups were detected using immunocytochemical method. RT- PCR was further used to detect the expression of Oct4, Notch1, Hes1, Nestin and NSE. The cell viability was measured by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium methods. Under the convert microscope it was observed that WISH cells started to change their shape, and there were several axon or dendrite-like processes out from the cell body induced by astragalus for 24 h or RA for 12 h. The positive cell rates of NSE and MAP-2 in 100 μL/mL astragalus-induced group were less than those in RA-induced group at 48 h (P < 0.05), but higher than those in control group. Cell viability in astragalus group was higher than that of RA group (P < 0.05). While the positive cell rates of Nestin and GFAP in 100 μL/mL astragalus-induced group were higher than those in RA-induced group at 48 h (P < 0.05). The positive cell rates of Nestin in the two induced groups were lower than those in control group. RT-PCR showed that the expressions of Oct4, Notch1 and Hes1 in RA and astragalus (100 μL/mL) groups were less than those in control group, but the expression of NSE was higher than that in control group. These results suggest that astragalus (especially at 100 μL/mL, 48 h) and RA can both induce human amniotic epithelial cell line WISH cells into neuron-like cells, but astragalus induction has a higher cell survival rate than RA induction, and the expression of Notch1 signal molecules is inhibited during the induction.

In the crystal, mol­ecules are linked by typical carb­oxy­lic acid O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a zigzag chain. C—H⋯O inter­actions also occur.

Hepatoprotective and antiviral properties of isochlorogenic acid A from Laggera alata against hepatitis B virus infection

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

The aim of this study was to determine the anti-hepatitis B effect of isochlorogenic acid A isolated from Laggera alata (Asteraceae), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The anti-hepatitis B activity of isochlorogenic acid A was evaluated by the D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-induced HL-7702 hepatocyte damage model and the HBV-transfected HepG2.2.15 cells.

RESULTS

Isochlorogenic acid A significantly improved HL-7702 hepatocyte viability and markedly inhibited the productions of HBsAg and HBeAg. The inhibitory rates of isochlorogenic acid A on the HBsAg and HBeAg expressions were 86.9% and 72.9%, respectively. In addition, isochlorogenic acid A declined markedly the content of hepatitis B virus covalently closed circular DNA (HBV cccDNA) and induced significantly the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression in HepG2.2.15 cells.

CONCLUSIONS

Isochlorogenic acid A was verified to possess the potent anti-hepatitis B activity. The anti-HBV target of isochlorogenic acid A is probably associated with blocking the translation step of the HBV replication. Overexpression of HO-1 may contribute to the anti-HBV activity of isochlorogenic acid A by reducing the stability of the HBV core protein and thus blocking the refill of nuclear HBV cccDNA. Additionally, the hepatoprotective effect of isochlorogenic acid A could be achieved by its antioxidative property and induction of HO-1.

Synthesis, crystal structure, in vitro acetohydroxyacid synthase inhibition, in vivo herbicidal activity, and 3D-QSAR of new asymmetric aryl disulfides

Acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS; EC 2.2.1.6) is an important bioactive target for the design of environmentally benign herbicides. On the basis of previous virtual screening, 50 asymmetric aryl disulfides containing [1,2,4]triazole groups were synthesized and characterized by (1)H NMR, HRMS, and crystal structure. Compounds I-a, I-b, and I-p show Ki values of 1.70, 4.69, and 5.57 μM, respectively, for wild type Arabidopsis thaliana AHAS (AtAHAS) and low resistance against mutant type AtAHAS W574L. At 100 mg L(-1) concentration, compounds I-a, II-a, and II-b exhibit 86.6, 81.7, and 87.5% in vivo rape root growth inhibition. CoMFA steric and electrostatic contour maps were established, and a possible binding mode was suggested from molecular docking, which provide valuable information to understand the key structural features of these disulfide compounds. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first comprehensive case suggesting that asymmetric aryl disulfides are novel AHAS inhibitors.

Defining MAP3 kinases required for MDA-MB-231 cell tumor growth and metastasis

Analysis of patient tumors suggests that multiple MAP3 kinases (MAP3Ks) are critical for growth and metastasis of cancer cells. MAP3Ks selectively control the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), p38 and ERK5 in response to receptor tyrosine kinases and GTPases. We used MDA-MB-231 cells because of their ability to metastasize from the breast fat pad to distant lymph nodes for an orthotopic xenograft model to screen the function of seven MAP3Ks in controlling tumor growth and metastasis. Stable short hairpin RNA (shRNA) knockdown was used to inhibit the expression of each of the seven MAP3Ks, which were selected for their differential regulation of the MAPK network. The screen identified two MAP3Ks, MEKK2 and MLK3, whose shRNA knockdown caused significant inhibition of both tumor growth and metastasis. Neither MEKK2 nor MLK3 have been previously shown to regulate tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. These results demonstrated that MAP3Ks, which differentially activate JNK, p38 and ERK5, are necessary for xenograft tumor growth and metastasis of MDA-MB-231 tumors. The requirement for MAP3Ks signaling through multiple MAPK pathways explains why several members of the MAPK network are activated in cancer. MEKK2 was required for epidermal growth factor receptor and Her2/Neu activation of ERK5, with ERK5 being required for metastasis. Loss of MLK3 expression increased mitotic infidelity and apoptosis in vitro. Knockdown of MEKK2 and MLK3 resulted in increased apoptosis in orthotopic xenografts relative to control tumors in mice, inhibiting both tumor growth and metastasis; MEKK2 and MLK3 represent untargeted kinases in tumor biology for potential therapeutic development.

Dietary pseudopurpurin improves bone geometry architecture and metabolism in red-bone Guishan goats

Red-colored bones were found initially in some Guishan goats in the 1980s, and they were designated red-boned goats. However, it is not understood what causes the red color in the bone, or whether the red material changes the bone geometry, architecture, and metabolism of red-boned goats. Pseudopurpurin was identified in the red-colored material of the bone in red-boned goats by high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spetrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Pseudopurpurin is one of the main constituents of Rubia cordifolia L, which is eaten by the goats. The assessment of the mechanical properties and micro-computed tomography showed that the red-boned goats displayed an increase in the trabecular volume fraction, trabecular thickness, and the number of trabeculae in the distal femur. The mean thickness, inner perimeter, outer perimeter, and area of the femoral diaphysis were also increased. In addition, the trabecular separation and structure model index of the distal femur were decreased, but the bone mineral density of the whole femur and the mechanical properties of the femoral diaphysis were enhanced in the red-boned goats. Meanwhile, expression of alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin mRNA was higher, and the ratio of the receptor activator of the nuclear factor kappa B ligand to osteoprotegerin was markedly lower in the bone marrow of the red-boned goats compared with common goats. To confirm further the effect of pseudopurpurin on bone geometry, architecture, and metabolism, Wistar rats were fed diets to which pseudopurpurin was added for 5 months. Similar changes were observed in the femurs of the treated rats. The above results demonstrate that pseudopurpurin has a close affinity with the mineral salts of bone, and consequently a high level of mineral salts in the bone cause an improvement in bone strength and an enhancement in the structure and metabolic functions of the bone.

Effects of aqueous extract of Capsicum frutescens (Solanaceae) against the fish ectoparasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis is an important fish ectoparasite that often results in significant economic losses to freshwater aquaculture. The search of alternative substances to control infections of I. multifiliis became stringent after malachite green, an effective and widely used chemotherapeutant, is banned on fish farms because of its carcinogenicity and teratogenicity. In this study, the effects of the aqueous extract of Capsicum frutescens, which is readily available and affordable, were evaluated under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The results in the in vitro conditions showed that the aqueous extracts of C. frutescens with the ratios (V (SS)/V (T)-V (SS), the volume of stock solution; V (T), the volume of total solution) of 1:32 and 1:64 led to more than 70 % mortality of I. multifiliis theronts during 4 h of exposure and significantly reduced the survival of the tomonts and the total number of theronts released by the tomonts within 22 h (P < 0.05). A 96-h bioassay was carried out to determine the acute toxicity of the aqueous extract of C. frutescens to goldfish. No visible effect was observed in the treatments with the aqueous extracts of C. frutescens with the ratios (V (SS)/V (T)) of 1:32, 1:64 and 1:128, while in the other treatments, the erratic behaviour of fish was noted. In addition, in vitro tests demonstrated that the aqueous extract of C. frutescens had an adverse effect on I. multifiliis trophonts in situ. Fish treated with the aqueous extracts of C. frutescens in ratios V (SS)/V (T) of 1:32 and 1:64 carried significantly fewer parasites than the control and the other treatments (P < 0.05). These results suggest, therefore, that aqueous extracts of C. frutescens have potential for the control of ichthyophthiriasis in the aquaculture industry, though further phytochemical studies will need to be performed for isolation and identification of the active compounds.

Poly[[bis-[3-(1H-tetra-zol-1-yl)propanoic acid-κN(4)]cadmium]-di-μ-thio-cyanato-κ(2)N:S;κ(2)S:N]

In the title compound, [Cd(NCS)(2)(C(4)H(6)N(4)O(2))(2)](n), the Cd(II) cation is located on an inversion center and is coordinated by two N and two S atoms from four SCN(-) anions and two N atoms from two 3-(1H-tetra-zol-1-yl)propanoic acid (Htzp) ligands in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The SCN(-) anions bridge the Cd(II) cations into a layer structure parallel to (100). A weak intra-molecular C-H⋯N inter-action occurs. The layers are further assembled into a three-dimensional supra-molecular structure via classical O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Clinical and Molecular Evaluation of Warming and Tonic Herb Treatment for Sibling Patients of a Typical Kidney-yang Deficiency Family

It is essential to explore the molecular therapeutic effect of warm and tonic herb treatment for individuals with typical kidney-yang deficiency. In this report, we have identified members of a family with a history of suffering from cold and kidney-yang deficiency syndromes. First, we have employed the accumulated scores of the 40-items clinical scoring indicators for kidney-yang deficiency and cold syndromes to clinically assess the presence or absence of the deficiency for 15 family members. We then proceeded to compare the gene expression profiles of RNA isolated from blood samples, prior to and post-herbal treatment, of a sibling (brother and younger sister) that are suffering from the deficiency using cDNA microarrays with 18816 genes. Following treatments with the warming and tonic herb, the accumulated clinical scores obtained from the 40-items clinical scoring indicators were compared to those obtained pre-treatment. It was observed that the accumulated clinical scores were reduced by 1/3 for the brother and 2/3 for his younger sister following the treatments. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that the level of gene expression for a total of 33 genes at pre-treatment was modulated after treatments with the warming and tonic herb and correlated well with the clinical improvements of their syndromes. These results suggest that the combination of gene profiling and the accumulated clinical scores obtained from the 40-items clinical scoring indicators may provide an accurate clinical assessment and a way to monitor the therapeutic efficacy of the warming and tonic herb treatment.

The structure-activity relationship in herbicidal monosubstituted sulfonylureas

BACKGROUND

The herbicide sulfonylurea (SU) belongs to one of the most important class of herbicides worldwide. It is well known for its ecofriendly, extreme low toxicity towards mammals and ultralow dosage application. The original inventor, G Levitt, set out structure-activity relationship (SAR) guidelines for SU structural design to attain superhigh bioactivity. A new approach to SU molecular design has been developed.

RESULTS

After the analysis of scores of SU products by X-ray diffraction methodology and after greenhouse herbicidal screening of 900 novel SU structures synthesised in the authors' laboratory, it was found that several SU structures containing a monosubstituted pyrimidine moiety retain excellent herbicidal characteristics, which has led to partial revision of the Levitt guidelines.

CONCLUSIONS

Among the novel SU molecules, monosulfuron and monosulfuron-ester have been developed into two new herbicides that have been officially approved for field application and applied in millet and wheat fields in China. A systematic structural study of the new substrate-target complex and the relative mode of action in comparison with conventional SU has been carried out. A new mode of action has been postulated.

[Molecular epidemiological analysis of rubella virus isolates from 2001 to 2011 in Shanghai, China]

Throat swabs collected from patients whose serum was measles IgM negative and rubella IgM positive during 2001-2011 were used to conduct cell culture for rubella virus. After identification of cell culture with RT-PCR, nucleotide of gene E1 of rubella virus was amplified and sequenced, followed by molecular epidemiological analysis. A total of 31 rubella viruses were isolated from 60 throat swabs. Compared 27 isolates with the WHO reference strains of all genotypes, phylogenetic tree was constructed based on the amplified 739 nucleotide fragment. These isolates belonged to two different genotypes respectively. Isolates 11009, 11052 and 11106 in 2011 belonged to genotype 2B, and others belonged to genotype 1E. Most of mutations were nonsense mutation, and sequence of amino acid was highly conserved. Amino acid sequence of most isolates of genotype 1E was identical, which suggested rubella viruses from same transmission chain might be transmitted continually since 2001. Rubella virus genotype 2B was found to be popular for the first time in Shanghai in 2011. The nucleotide sequences of these genotype 2B isolates showed 99% identity compared with that of isolates recently from Vietnam, Japan and Argentina. The resources of these strains were not confirmed due to the absence of rubella virus surveillance before.

Study of Gene Expression Profiles and Biological Mechanism of Cerebral Palsy Using a Monozygotic Twin Pair

The gene expression profile of a normal-suffering monozygotic twin pair is investigated to explore biological mechanisms of spastic type cerebral palsy. Main works include following three aspects: First, a cDNA microarray test is carried out to get the differentially expressed genes of the patient with cerebral palsy compared to her monozygotic twin sister. Second, these differentially expressed genes are searched for their bioinformation within 4 biological databases: FatiGO, FatiGOPlus, KEGG, and SOURCE. Third, a set of special genes and gene families are screened out from the spastic type cerebral palsy patient. These biological analyses reveal that those genes for cell junction are mostly down-regulated, while those genes for metabolism are mostly up-regulated. The individual genes, gene family, and their associated biological functions can reflect the pathological and physiological characteristics of the cerebral palsy.

First Report of Basella rugose mosaic virus Infecting Four O'Clock (Mirabilis jalapa) in China

Four o'clock (Mirabilis jalapa) and M. himalaica var. chinensis are members of the family Nyctaginaceae and are widely distributed weeds in Yunnan Province, China. In 2009, mosaic and malformation symptoms were observed on leaves of the four o'clock on the campus of Yunnan Agricultural University and in the Black Dragon Pool Park in Kunming City, China. More than 30% of the four o'clock plants showed symptoms of the disease. Sap from leaves of symptomatic four o'clock plants caused local chlorotic and necrotic lesions in inoculated Chenopodium amaranticolor after 7 to 10 days and systemic mosaic symptoms in C. quinoa and Nicotiana benthamiana after 10 to 12 days. No symptoms were observed following inoculation of sap from asymptomatic plants. A pure virus isolate (MJ) was obtained after three successive single-lesion transfers from C. amaranticolor. Following mechanical inoculation of the MJ isolate, seedlings of indicator plants, N. benthamiana, displayed mosaic symptoms. Moreover, back transmission to healthy four o'clock seedlings by leaf extracts from systemically infected N. benthamiana plants caused similar mosaic and malformation symptoms. Flexuous, filamentous particles (650 to 700 nm long and 13 nm wide) and cytoplasmic laminar aggregates and pinwheel inclusions typical of members of the genus Potyvirus were observed in infected four o'clock leaves by electron microscopy. No other virus particles were observed. Serological testing of 10 symptomatic and healthy plants using a monoclonal antibody specific for Potyvirus group members in an indirect ELISA (Agdia Inc., Elkhart, IN) also resulted in positive reactions in infected leaves, however, all healthy seedlings tested were negative. Total RNAs were extracted from infected four o'clock leaves with the RNeasy Plant Mini Kit (QIAGEN, Hilden, Germany) and the 3'-terminal portion of the viral genome (including part of the NIb polymerase, the entire coat protein (CP), and 3'-UTR) was then amplified by reverse transcription-PCR with a universal Potyviridae primer Sprimer/M4 and an M4T as the initial primer (2). A fragment of 1,720 nucleotides long were separated, purified, and cloned and three independent clones were sequenced (GenBank Accession No. JN250997). Nucleotide and amino acid sequence analysis of the putative CP gene, respectively, revealed 75.1 to 76.3% and 80.3 to 82.1% identity with the Basella rugose mosaic virus (BaRMV) (GenBank Accession Nos. DQ821938, DQ394891, and DQ821939), 77.4 and 81.0% identity with Peace lily mosaic virus (GenBank Accession No. DQ851494), and 76.0 and 81.7% identity with the Phalaenopsis chlorotic spot virus (GenBank Accession No. HM021142). However, on the basis of the CP gene sequence analyses, these three viruses shared high (>88.5 and >94.3%) CP nucleotide and amino acid identity and should be classified as the same Potyvirus species. According to the species demarcation criteria for the Potyviridae (1), the pathogen causing mosaic and malformation symptoms on four o'clock was BaRMV (3). Myeloid cell tissue factor does not contribute to venous thrombogenesis in an electrolytic injury model

INTRODUCTION

Tissue factor (TF) is a potent initiator of the extrinsic coagulation cascade. The role and source of TF in venous thrombotic disease is not clearly defined. Our study objective was to identify the contribution of myeloid cell TF to venous thrombogenesis in mice.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The mouse electrolytic inferior vena cava model was used to induce thrombosis. The following groups of mice were used (1) TF(flox/flox)LysMCre(+) mice that have reduced TF expression in myeloid cells, (2) TF(flox/flox)LysMCre(-) littermate controls, (3) Wild type mice given a monoclonal anti-mouse TF antibody (1H1) to inhibit TF activity, and (4) Wild type mice given rat IgG. Evaluations at baseline, day 2, and day 6 post thrombosis included thrombus weight, vein wall inflammatory cell migration, vein wall TF mRNA, and plasma D-dimer levels.

RESULTS

Inhibition of TF significantly decreased thrombus weight 2days post venous thrombosis. In contrast, TF(flox/flox)LysMCre(+) had no change in thrombus weight when compared to littermate controls. The absence of myeloid cell TF did not affect infiltration of neutrophils or monocytes into the vein wall. TF mRNA expression in the vein wall decreased at 2days but then returned to baseline levels by 6days post thrombosis. D-dimer levels peaked at 2days post thrombosis in mice with or without myeloid cell TF.

CONCLUSIONS

TF is important in the formation of venous thrombi in the macrovasculature. However, TF expression by myeloid cells does not significantly contribute to venous thrombogenesis in this model.

A new approach for cloning hLIF cDNA from genomic DNA isolated from the oral mucous membrane

Complementary DNA (cDNA) is valuable for investigating protein structure and function in the study of life science, but it is difficult to obtain by traditional reverse transcription. We employed a novel strategy to clone human leukemia inhibitory factor (hLIF) gene cDNA from genomic DNA, which was directly isolated from the mucous membrane of mouth. The hLIF sequence, which is 609 bp long and is composed of three exons, can be acquired within a few hours by amplifying each exon and splicing all of them using overlap-PCR. This new approach developed is simple, time- and cost-effective, without RNA preparation or cDNA synthesis, and is not limited to the specific tissues for a particular gene and the expression level of the gene.

STAT3 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to non-small cell lung cancer

Signal transducer and activator of transcription protein 3 (STAT3) has been implicated in cancer development and is recognized as a type of oncogene. However, association studies of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the STAT3 gene with cancer risk are rare and not available for lung cancer. We examined whether STAT3 polymorphisms are associated with the risk of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Eight SNPs in the STAT3 gene were genotyped by TaqMan assays in 326 NSCLC cases and 432 controls in a Chinese population. Significant decreased risk of NSCLC was observed for carriers of minor alleles rs4796793 (odds ratio (OR) = 0.68, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.51-0.92), rs7211777 (OR = 0.67, 95%CI = 0.50-0.90), rs12949918 (OR = 0.73, 95%CI = 0.54-0.97), rs744166 (OR = 0.69, 95%CI = 0.51-0.92), rs9912773 (OR = 0.75, 95%CI = 0.55-0.98), and rs3869550 (OR = 0.70, 95%CI = 0.53-0.94). The GGCGGC haplotype, comprised of minor alleles of the six NSCLC-associated SNPs, had a 0.78-fold (95%CI = 0.62-0.97) significantly decreased risk of NSCLC, as compared to the most common haplotype of CATACT. Stratification analyses by clinical stage showed that the trend for the association between STAT3 polymorphisms and NSCLC risk was present both for stage I/II and stage III/IV, and appeared moderately stronger for stage III/IV. We conclude that polymorphisms in the STAT3 gene may have a protective role in the development of NSCLC, particular of stage III/IV NSCLC.

Anthracycline treatment of the human monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1 increases phosphatidylserine exposure and tissue factor activity

INTRODUCTION

Cancer associated thrombosis is a well-recognized phenomenon that results in considerable patient morbidity and mortality. Malignancy conveys an increased risk for thrombosis and chemotherapy further elevates this risk. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this process remain poorly defined.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A human acute monocytic leukemia cell line (THP-1) was treated with commonly used anthracycline chemotherapeutics at concentrations similar to those found in the plasma of cancer patients. Cells were analyzed for tissue factor (TF) mRNA, protein, and activity. Microparticle (MP) TF activity was also measured. Phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure on cells and MPs was analyzed by flow cytometry. PS levels on MPs was also evaluated in an annexin V capture assay.

RESULTS

Anthracycline treatment of THP-1 cells resulted in a concentration-dependent increase in cellular TF activity without a change in TF protein, which was associated with increased PS exposure on the cell surface and apoptosis. The increase in TF activity was abolished by annexin V or lactadherin indicating that PS exposure was required. Anthracycline treatment of THP-1 cells also increased the number of TF-positive MPs.

CONCLUSION

Treatment of THP-1 cells with anthracyclines induces apoptosis and increases cellular TF activity. The increased activity required an increase in exposure of PS. Additionally, anthracyclines increase the release of TF-positive MPs from THP-1 cells. We propose that the increase in cellular TF activity in circulating leukemic cells, combined with increased numbers of TF-positive MPs, may contribute to thrombosis in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

Polymorphism identification in the goat KITLG gene and association analysis with litter size

This study reported the analysis of KIT ligand (KITLG) gene polymorphisms in 681 goats of three breeds: Xinong Saanen (SN), Guanzhong (GZ), and Boer (BG). In addition, the study identified three allelic variants: g.769T>C and g.817G>T in SN and GZ breeds, and g.9760G>C in the three goat breeds. The g.769T>C and g.817G>T loci were closely linked (r(2)  > 0.33). All the single nucleotide polymorphism loci were in Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium (P < 0.05). Significant associations were found for litter size with all three loci. Therefore, these results suggest that the KITLG gene is a strong candidate gene affecting litter size in goats.

A modified rat model for cannulation and collection of thoracic duct lymph

Difficulty in collecting lymph samples in small animals has impeded studies on lymphatic function and lymph composition. Here we report a simple and effective modified rat model for thoracic duct lymph drainage where animals remain in full consciousness and have free movement and access to water and food over 12 hours. The operative procedure required approximately 30 minutes to perform. Mean lymph drainage was 0.71 +/- 0.33 ml/h, and protein concentration did not change significantly (mean 37 +/- 2.59 mg/ml) over the 12 hours. However, the number of lymphocytes fluctuated widely between 0.08 +/- 0.03 x 10(6)/ml and 12.17 +/- 6.58 x 10(6)/ml. This modified animal model of thoracic duct lymph collection avoids influences of lipid intake, general anesthesia, or limited activity of animals on experimental outcomes, and therefore more accurately reflects lymph flow and composition under normal physiological conditions.

4-(4-Hy-droxy-phen-yl)butan-2-one

In the title compound, C₁₀H₁₂O₂, the substituted benzene ring is inclined at a dihedral angle of 75.9 (1)° to the almost planar butan-2-one substituent (r.m.s. deviation = 0.02 Å). In the crystal, inter­molecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol­ecules into chains along the a axis.

A modified fractal zone plate with extended depth of focus in spectral domain optical coherence tomography

In optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems, there is a trade-off between the depth of focus (DOF) and lateral resolution when conventional lenses are used. We propose a new method that employs a modified fractal generalized zone plate (MFraGZP) combined with a conventional lens to improve the trade-off effect, with an extended DOF of about 2.5 mm (14 times larger) while the lateral resolution is maintained at ~9.5 μm. As an example, images of the calibration microspheres are obtained and demonstrated with the extended DOF in a spectral domain OCT system.

[Measurement of tooth length of upper canines in complete unilateral cleft lip and palate patients with cone-beam computed tomography]

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to investigate with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) the tooth length of permanent upper canines near the cleft area in patients with complete unilateral cleft lip palate (UCLP) and to compare the findings with its contralateral tooth, including full length, crown length, root length and top root ratio. Meanwhile, the teeth near the cleft area having anomalies are also recorded.

METHODS

A sample of 20 patients with complete UCLP who accepted the CBCT scan were selected. The raw data were constructed along the longitudinal axis of the upper canines, and the full lengths, crown lengths, root lengths of upper canines of all patients were measured using 3 -D measurement software associated to CBCT. The fall lengths, crown lengths, root lengths and top root ratios of the upper canines accepted paired-t test. The anterior teeth near the cleft area having anomalies and positions of the clefts were also recorded.

RESULTS

The fall lengths, root lengths and top root ratios of the upper canines had statistical difference between the cleft side and non-cleft side (P < 0.01), except the crown lengths (P > 0.05). 20 lateral incisors near the cleft area had anomalies (100%).

CONCLUSION

The lengths of upper canines on the cleft side are shorter than those of the non-cleft side, and the root lengths are affected more. The teeth near the cleft side prove to be abnormal, especially the lateral incisors.
