Abstract
Tissue-specific expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) are always linked to specific diseases. In this study, we focused on eQTLs common to multiple tissues and explored their functional mechanisms in disease for the first time. We found 11 common eQTL genes among multiple tissues. Five genes were validated through a genome-wide association study, 3 genes were validated using the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database, and the others were validated through text mining. Most of these disorders were related to the systemic immune system. In functional analyses using Gene Ontology and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, these common eQTL genes were enriched in biological processes and pathways mostly related to the immunity. Therefore, we believe that these common eQTL genes are related to immune system.

Abstract
Laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) is a non-contact optical interferometric system to measure vibrations of structures and machines with a high precision. Normal LDV can only offer a single-point measurement. Scanning LDV is usually impractical to do measurement on transient events. In this paper, a fiber-based self-synchronized multi-point LDV is proposed. The multiple laser beams with different frequency shifts are generated from one laser source. The beams are projected onto a vibrating object, reflected and interfered with a common reference beam. The signal including vibration information of multiple spatial points is captured by one single-pixel photodetector. The optical system is mainly integrated by fiber components for flexibility in measurement. Two experiments are conducted to measure a steady-state simple harmonic vibration of a cantilever beam and a transient vibration of a beam clamped at both ends. In the first measurement, a numerical interpolation is applied to reconstruct the mode shape with increased number of data points. The vibration mode obtained is compared with that from FEM simulation. In transient vibration measurement, the first five resonant frequencies are obtained. The results show the new-reported fiber-based multipoint LDV can offer a vibration measurement on various spatial points simultaneously. With the flexibility of fiber configuration, it becomes more practical for dynamic structural evaluation in industrial areas.

Abstract
Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is an important crop in Ningguo, China. Since 2010, leaf spot symptoms were observed yearly starting in June. Blighted leaf areas on individual plants ranged from 10 to 25% in many fields, and up to 200 ha were affected each year. Symptoms consisted of small, brown, necrotic spots uniformly distributed on the 1- to 2-week-old leaves. Small tissue pieces from the edges of lesions were disinfected in 2% NaClO for 3 min, rinsed twice in distilled water, plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 25°C in darkness for 4 days. Single spore isolations were obtained for six strains. When inoculated on SNA media, the six strains produced typical septate mycelium, with the young hyphae hyaline and aged ones white greyish. Setae of the strains on SNA were brown, tip acute, 2- to 3-septate, and 32.5 to 85.6 μm long. Conidiogenous cells were hyaline, cylindrical, 2- to 3-septate, 6.2 to 16.5 μm in length, and 2.8 to 4.3 μm in width. The mature conidia were slightly curved, with round apex and truncate base, 1 to 5 oil globules, and were 13.3 to 23.8 μm in length and 3.0 to 3.9 μm in width, respectively. Appressoria were solitary or in loose groups, dark brown, irregular shapes, and were 6.8 to 9.2 μm in length and 4.3 to 7.1 μm in width. PCR amplification was carried out by utilizing the universal rDNA-ITS primer pair ITS4/ITS5 (1) and the actin gene primer pair ACT-512F and ACT-783R (2). The PCR products of ITS (GenBank Accession No. KC913201) and actin gene (KC913202) from six isolates were identical, respectively, and shared 100% identity to the ITS sequence of strain CBS 167.49 of Colletotrichum spaethianum (GU227807.1) and 99% similarity to the actin gene of strain CBS 167.49 of C. spaethianum (GU227905.1), which was isolated from Hosta sieboldiana in Germany (3). Based on the above, the isolates were identified as C. spaethianum. To confirm pathogenicity, conidial suspensions (105 conidia ml-1) of each of the six isolates were sprayed on four leaves per plant on five 6-month-old P. praeruptorum plants. Control plants were sprayed with water. Plants were maintained at 28°C in a greenhouse with constant humidity (RH 90%) and a 12-h photoperiod of fluorescent light. Symptoms similar to the original ones started to appear after 10 days, while the control plants remained healthy. The tests were repeated three times and the fungus was recovered and identified as C. spaethianum by both morphology and molecular characterization. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. spaethianum causing leaf spot on P. praeruptorum in China. Since the C. spaethianum infections pose a serious threat to P. praeruptorum production, this disease needs to be considered for developing effective control strategies. References: (1) I. Abstract
Abstract
The effect of high molecular mass (MM) tail in the molecular mass distribution (MMD) of polypropylene (PP) on injection molding has been studied using injection molded tensile bars from a commercial PP resin and two samples of the above resin deprived of the high MM tail in different degrees by controlled degradation during extruder reaction with an added processing aid named Promax. The central portions of the tensile bars were studied by polarizing microscopy of microtomed sections parallel and perpendicular to the melt flow direction, and by density and birefringence profiles across the thickness of the bar. Mechanical properties and acoustic emission behavior in stretching of these injection molded tensile bars are also discussed. The experimental results show that by stripping off the high MM tail in the MMD the injection molded tensile bar has smaller degree of crystallization, less frozen orientation, improved uniformity across the thickness and the thickness of the skin part is greatly reduced. Better quality of the fabricated articles is to be expected by using Promax with PP for injection molding.

Abstract
The family of Groves mechanisms, which includes the well-known VCG mechanism (also known as the Clarke mechanism), is a family of efficient and strategy-proof mechanisms. Unfortunately, the Groves mechanisms are generally not budget balanced. That is, under such mechanisms, payments may flow into or out of the system of the agents, resulting in deficits or reduced utilities for the agents. We consider the following problem: within the family of Groves mechanisms, we want to identify mechanisms that give the agents the highest utilities, under the constraint that these mechanisms must never incur deficits.
We adopt a prior-free approach. We introduce two general measures for comparing mechanisms in prior-free settings. We say that a non-deficit Groves mechanism M individually dominates another non-deficit Groves mechanism M' if for every type profile, every agent's utility under M is no less than that under M', and this holds with strict inequality for at least one type profile and one agent. We say that a non-deficit Groves mechanism M collectively dominates another non-deficit Groves mechanism M' if for every type profile, the agents' total utility under M is no less than that under M', and this holds with strict inequality for at least one type profile. The above definitions induce two partial orders on non-deficit Groves mechanisms. We study the maximal elements corresponding to these two partial orders, which we call the individually undominated mechanisms and the collectively undominated mechanisms, respectively.

Abstract
This study presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) model comparing the waste management options for starch-polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) biopolymers including landfill, anaerobic digestion (AD), industrial composting and home composting. The ranking of biological treatment routes for starch-PVOH biopolymer wastes depended on their chemical compositions. AD represents the optimum choice for starch-PVOH biopolymer containing N and S elements in global warming potential (GWP(100)), acidification and eutrophication but not on the remaining impact categories, where home composting was shown to be a better option due to its low energy and resource inputs. For those starch-PVOH biopolymers with zero N and S contents home composting delivered the best environmental performance amongst biological treatment routes in most impact categories (except for GWP(100)). The landfill scenario performed generally well due largely to the 100-year time horizon and efficient energy recovery system modeled but this good performance is highly sensitive to assumptions adopted in landfill model.

Abstract
Phytophthora capsici is a plant pathogenic oomycete that damages numerous crops worldwide. Consequently, interest in research on the genetic structure of this species has grown in recent decades. However, there is little information about P. capsici in eastern China. We investigated the genetic diversity of P. capsici isolates from three large regions of Anhui Province in eastern China based on ISSR-PCR technology. Thirteen random primers were screened and used to amplify DNA from 51 samples. We obtained 158 reproducible ISSR fragments, of which 90% were polymorphic, revealing a high degree of polymorphism among the isolates. Genetic similarity coefficients among all the isolates ranged from 0.56 to 0.94, with a mean of 0.84 based on the ISSR data, indicating a high level of genetic variation in these P. capsici isolates. Cluster analysis using UPGMA indicated that the Anhui isolates were divided into seven groups according to the DNA fingerprints, although there was no correlation between the ISSR group and geographic origin. Isolates from the same location showed no clustering based on the year of sampling. AMOVA partitioned variability among (13.6%) and within populations (86.4%). The gene flow among populations ranged from 2.804 to 4.937, with a mean of 3.545, indicating highly frequent gene exchange. Genetic distances and genetic differentiation were negatively correlated with geographic distances. These results lead us to suggest that this pathogen has considerable evolutionary potential, which will enable it to adapt to and overcome management strategies over time.

Abstract
Life cycle assessment (LCA) data quality issues were investigated by using case studies on products from starch-polyvinyl alcohol based biopolymers and petrochemical alternatives. The time horizon chosen for the characterization models was shown to be an important sensitive parameter for the environmental profiles of all the polymers. In the global warming potential and the toxicity potential categories the comparison between biopolymers and petrochemical counterparts altered as the time horizon extended from 20 years to infinite time. These case studies demonstrated that the use of a single time horizon provide only one perspective on the LCA outcomes which could introduce an inadvertent bias into LCA outcomes especially in toxicity impact categories and thus dynamic LCA characterization models with varying time horizons are recommended as a measure of the robustness for LCAs especially comparative assessments. This study also presents an approach to integrate statistical methods into LCA models for analyzing uncertainty in industrial and computer-simulated datasets. We calibrated probabilities for the LCA outcomes for biopolymer products arising from uncertainty in the inventory and from data variation characteristics this has enabled assigning confidence to the LCIA outcomes in specific impact categories for the biopolymer vs. petrochemical polymer comparisons undertaken. Uncertainty combined with the sensitivity analysis carried out in this study has led to a transparent increase in confidence in the LCA findings. We conclude that LCAs lacking explicit interpretation of the degree of uncertainty and sensitivities are of limited value as robust evidence for decision making or comparative assertions.

Abstract
Exposure to cigarette smoke has been associated with an increased risk of neurological diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis. In these studies, serum and brain sections from Lewis rats or those exposed to cigarette smoke and control rats were examined for evidence of increased inflammation and oxidative stress. Immunocytochemical staining of brain sections from CS-exposed rats showed increased expression of class II MHC and, in ELISA, levels of IFN-gamma and TNF-α were higher than for non-exposed rats. In polymerase chain reaction assays there was increased interferon-gamma, TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-23, IL-6, IL-23, IL-17, IL-10, TGF-β, T-bet and FoxP3 gene expression with CS exposure. There was also markedly elevated MIP-1α/CCL3, less prominent MCP-1/CCL2 and no elevation of SDF-1α gene expression. Analysis of samples from CS-exposed and control rats for anti-oxidant expression showed no significant difference in serum levels of glutathione and, in brain, similar levels of superoxide dismutase and decreased thioredoxin gene expression. In contrast, there was increased brain gene expression for the pro-oxidants iNOS and the NADPH components NOX4, dual oxidase 1 and p22(phox). Nrf2 expression, which is typically triggered as a secondary response to oxidative stress, was also increased in brains from CS-exposed rats with nuclear translocation of this protein from cytoplasm demonstrated in astrocytes in association with increased expression of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor gene, an Nrf2 target. These studies, therefore, demonstrate that CS exposure in these animals can trigger multiple immune and oxidative responses that may have important roles in the pathogenesis of CNS inflammatory neurological diseases.

Abstract
Tree peony bark, a main component of Chinese traditional medicine used for alleviating fever and dissipating blood stasis, is mainly produced in Tongling, China. Recently, tree peony cultivation in this area was seriously affected by root rot, with approximately 20 to 30% disease incidence each year. The disease severely affects yield and quality of tree peony bark. During the past 2 years, we collected 56 diseased tree peony plants from Mudan and Fenghuang townships in Tongling. We found reddish brown to dark brown root rot in mature roots, especially on those with injuries. Plant samples collected were disinfected with 2% sodium hypochlorite and isolations were conducted on potato sucrose agar (PSA). Eleven isolates were obtained and all had white fluffy aerial hypha on PSA. Two types of conidia were produced; the larger, reaphook-shaped ones had three to five septa and the smaller, ellipse-shaped ones had one or no septum. The reaphook-shaped conidia were 20.15 to 37.21 × 3.98 to 5.27 μm and the ellipse-shaped conidia were 6.02 to 15.52 × 2.21 to 5.33 μm in size. Chlamydospores were produced, with two to five arranged together. Biological characteristics of the fungi indicated that the optimum temperature for the mycelial growth on PSA was 25 to 30°C and the optimum pH range was 5.5 to 7.0. The above morphological characteristics point the fungal isolates to be Fusarium solani. To confirm pathogenicity, 30 healthy 1-year-old tree peony seedling plants were grown in pots (25 cm in diameter) with sterilized soil and a conidial suspension from one isolate (FH-1, 5 × 105 conidia/ml) was used for soil inoculation. Inoculated seedlings were maintained at 28°C in a greenhouse with a 12-h photoperiod of fluorescent light. Seedlings inoculated with distilled water were used as controls. After 3 weeks, the roots were collected and rinsed with tap water. Dark brown lesions were observed in the inoculated mature roots but not in the control roots. To confirm the identity of the pathogen, F. solani strains were reisolated from the lesions and total genomic DNA was extracted with the cetyltriethylammnonium bromide method from the mycelia of the reisolated strains (1). PCR was performed using the fungal universal primers ITS4 (5'-TCCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC-3') and ITS5 (5'-GGAAGTAAAAGTCGTAACAAGG-3') to amplify a DNA fragment of approximately 590 bp. The purified PCR products were sequenced (Invitrogen Co., Shanghai, China) and shared 100% sequence identity with each other. A comparison of the sequence (JQ658429.1) by the Clustal_W program (2) with those uploaded in GenBank confirmed with the fungus F. solani (100% sequence similarity to isolate S-0900 from the Great Plains of the United States; EU029589.1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of F. solani causing medical tree peony root rot in China. The existence of this pathogen in China may need to be considered for developing effective control strategies. References: (1). C. N. Stewart et al. Biotechniques 14:748, 1993. (2). J. D. Abstract
The behavior of micrometer-sized weak magnetic insulating particles migrating in a conductive liquid metal is of broad interest during strong magnetic field processing of materials. In the present paper, we develop a numerical method to investigate the solid-liquid and particle-particle interactions by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) modeling. By applying a strong magnetic field, for example, 10 Tesla, the drag forces of a single spherical particle can be increased up to around 15% at a creeping flow limit. However, magnetic field effects are reduced when the Reynolds number becomes higher. For two identical particles migrating along their centerline in a conductive liquid, both the drag forces and the magnetic interaction will be influenced. Factors such as interparticle distance, Reynolds number and magnetic flux density are investigated. Shielding effects are found from the leading particle, which will subsequently induce a hydrodynamic interaction between two particles. Strong magnetic fields however do not appear to have a significant influence on the shielding effects. In addition, the magnetic interaction forces of magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and induced magneto-hydrodynamic interaction are considered. It can be found that the induced magneto-hydrodynamic interaction force highly depends on the flow field and magnetic flux density. Therefore, the interaction between insulating particles can be controlled by applying a strong magnetic field and modifying the flow field. The present research provides a better understanding of the magnetic field induced interaction during liquid metal processing, and a method of non-metallic particles manipulation for metal/ceramic based materials preparation may be proposed.
