Abstract
We present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay B0-->gammagamma using data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- collider. Based on the observation of one event in the signal region, out of a sample of 21.3x10(6) e+e--->Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays, we establish an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0-->gammagamma)<1.7x10(-6) at the 90% confidence level. This result substantially improves upon existing limits.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the decay amplitudes in B-->J/psiK*(892) channels using 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at PEP-II. We measure a P-wave fraction R(perpendicular) = (16.0 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.4)% and a longitudinal polarization fraction (59.7 +/- 2.8 +/- 2.4)%. The measurement of a relative phase that is neither 0 nor pi, phi = 2.50 +/- 0.20 +/-0.08 radians, favors a departure from the factorization hypothesis. Although the decay B-->/psiK(pi) proceeds mainly via K*(892), there is also evidence for K2*(1430) and K(pi) S-wave contributions.

Abstract
The TEL/PDGFbetaR gene, which encodes a fusion protein containing the ETS-family member TEL fused to the protein-tyrosine kinase domain of the platelet-derived growth factor receptor-beta (PDGFbetaR), confers interleukin 3 (IL-3)-independent growth on Ba/F3 hematopoietic cells. TEL/PDGFbetaR mutants have been generated that contain tyrosine-to-phenylalanine (Tyr-->Phe) substitutions at phosphorylation sites present in the native PDGFbetaR to assess the role of these sites in cell transformation by TEL/PDGFbetaR. Similar to previous findings in a murine bone marrow transplantation model, full transformation of Ba/F3 cells to IL-3-independent survival and proliferation required the TEL/PDGFbetaR juxtamembrane and carboxy terminal phosphorylation sites. In contrast to previous reports concerning comparable mutants in the native PDGFbetaR, each of the TEL/PDGFbetaR mutants is fully active as a protein-tyrosine kinase. Expression of the TEL/PDGFbetaR fusion protein causes hyperphosphorylation and activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT5), and this activation of STAT5 requires the juxtamembrane Tyr579 and Tyr581 in the TEL/PDGFbetaR fusion. Hyperphosphosphorylation of phospholipase Cgamma (PLCgamma) and the p85 subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) requires the carboxy terminal tyrosine residues of TEL/PDGFbetaR. Thus, full transformation of Ba/F3 cells by TEL/PDGFbetaR requires engagement of PI3K and PLCgamma and activation of STAT5. Taken together with the growth properties of cells transformed by the TEL/PDGFbetaR variants, these findings indicate that a minimal combination of these signaling intermediates contributes to hematopoietic transformation by the wild-type TEL/PDGFbetaR fusion. Abstract
We present the results of searches for B decays to charmless two-body final states containing eta(') or omega mesons, based on 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector. We find the branching fractions Beta(B(+)-->eta(')K(+)) = (70+/-8+/-5) x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->eta(')K(0)) = (42(+13)(-11) +/- 4) x 10(-6), and Beta(B(+)-->omega pi(+)) = (6.6(+2.1)(-1.8) +/- 0.7) x 10(-6), where the first error quoted is statistical and the second is systematic. We give measurements of four additional modes for which the 90% confidence level upper limits are Beta(B(+)-->eta(')pi(+)) < 12 x 10(-6), Beta(B(+)-->omega K(+)) < 4 x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->omega K(0)) < 13 x 10(-6), and Beta(B(0)-->omega pi(0)) < 3 x 10(-6).

Abstract
The B(0) and B(+) meson lifetimes have been measured in e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected in 1999 and 2000 with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. Events are selected in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic final state while the second B meson is reconstructed inclusively. A combined fit to the B(0) and the B(+) decay time difference distributions yields tau(B(0)) = 1.546+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.022(syst) ps, tau(B(+)) = 1.673+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.023(syst) ps, and tau(B(+))/tau(B(0)) = 1.082+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.012(syst).

Abstract
The actions of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and adrenomedullin on steroid hormone secretion from the rat zona glomerulosa are controversial, with reports in the literature of both stimulatory and inhibitory effects. It appears that these results previously obtained may depend on the nature of the receptors expressed by zona glomerulosa cells. The present study was designed to characterize CGRP and adrenomedullin binding in the rat adrenal zona glomerulosa. Specific binding for both peptides was observed, with two CGRP receptor sites found, and a single population of adrenomedullin receptors, but approximately twice the number of adrenomedullin binding sites. Messenger RNA analysis of the candidate genes for CGRP and adrenomedullin receptors revealed an abundance of both CRLR and RAMP1 mRNA, suggesting that these genes encode one of the CGRP receptors in this tissue. Much less RAMP2 expression was observed, however, which suggests that another gene product may account for adrenomedullin binding. There were very low levels of RAMP3 expression, but abundant L1 mRNA present, which may suggest that this rather controversial receptor has a role in the adrenal. The finding of distinct and specific adrenomedullin and CGRP binding in this tissue may account for the different effects these peptides appear to exert on adrenal function.

Abstract
The production of J/psi mesons in continuum e(+)e(-) annihilations has been studied with the BABAR detector at energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The mesons are distinguished from J/psi production in B decays through their center-of-mass momentum and energy. We measure the cross section e(+)e(-)-->J/psi X to be 2.52+/-0.21+/-0.21 pb. We set a 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching fraction for direct Upsilon(4S)-->J/psi X decays at 4.7 x 10(-4).

Effects of exposure to event 176 Bacillus thuringiensis corn pollen on monarch and black swallowtail caterpillars under field conditions. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2001; 98:11908-12. Abstract
The widespread planting of corn genetically modified to produce Bacillus thuringiensis endotoxin has led to speculation that pollen from these fields might adversely affect nearby nontarget lepidopterans. A previous study of Bt corn engineered with Monsanto event 810 failed to detect an effect of pollen exposure on the black swallowtail, Papilio polyxenes, in either the field or the laboratory. Here, we report results of a field study investigating the impact of exposure to pollen from a Bt corn hybrid containing Novartis event 176 on two species of Lepidoptera, black swallowtails and monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus. Nearly half of the 600 monarch larvae died within the first 24 h; this and subsequent mortality was not associated with proximity to Bt corn and may have been due in part to predation. Survivorship of black swallowtails was much higher than that of the monarchs and was also independent of proximity to the transgenic corn. However, despite five rainfall events that removed much of the pollen from the leaves of their host plants during the experiment, we observed a significant reduction in growth rates of black swallowtail larvae that was likely caused by pollen exposure. These results suggest that Bt corn incorporating event 176 can have adverse sublethal effects on black swallowtails in the field and underscore the importance of event selection in reducing environmental impacts of transgenic plants.

Abstract
We have observed the decays B--> phiK and phiK(*) in a sample of over 45 million B mesons collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. The measured branching fractions are B(B+--> phiK+) = (7.7(+1.6)(-1.4)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B0--> phiK0) = (8.1(+3.1)(-2.5)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B+--> phiK(*+)) = (9.7(+4.2)(-3.4)+/-1.7)x10(-6), and B(B0--> phiK(*0)) = (8.7(+2.5)(-2.1)+/-1.1)x10(-6). We also report the upper limit B(B+--> phipi(+))<1.4x10(-6) ( 90% C.L.).

We present measurements, based on a sample of approximately 23x10(6) BB pairs, of the branching fractions and a search for CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states of kaons and pions. We find the branching fractions B(B0-->pi(+)pi(-)) = (4.1+/-1.0+/-0.7)x10(-6), B(B0-->K+pi(-)) = (16.7+/-1.6+/-1.3)x10(-6), B(B+-->K+pi(0)) = (10.8(+2.1)(-1.9)+/-1.0)x10(-6), B(B+-->K0pi(+)) = (18.2(+3.3)(-3.0)+/-2.0)x10(-6), B(B0-->K0pi(0)) = (8.2(+3.1)(-2.7)+/-1.2)x10(-6). We also report 90% confidence level upper limits for B meson decays to the pi(+)pi(0), K+K-, and K0K+ final states. In addition, charge asymmetries have been found to be consistent with zero, where the statistical precision is in the range of +/-0.10 to +/-0.18, depending on the decay mode.

Abstract
Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is well established as a paracrine regulator of adrenal function. It is present in nerves supplying the adrenal cortex, although previous studies have found that the amount of VIP in the outer zones of the rat adrenal is not affected by ligating the splanchnic nerve supplying the adrenal gland. The present studies were designed to investigate the mechanisms involved in regulating the VIP content of the rat adrenal gland. This study examined the effects of changes in electrolyte balance and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) administration on the adrenal content of VIP as measured by radioimmunoassay. Rats on a low sodium diet had a significantly increased capsular/zona glomerulosa immunoreactive VIP (irVIP) level, while rats on a high sodium diet had suppressed levels relative to controls. Changes in dietary sodium did not affect inner zone/medullary VIP content. Administration of ACTH caused a decrease in irVIP levels in the capsular/zona glomerulosa portion of the adrenal gland but had no effect on the inner zone/medulla. Analysis of mRNA encoding VIP revealed a large increase in expression of VIP in the sodium-deplete group compared with the control, with no change in VIP expression in the sodium-loaded group. ACTH treatment was found to significantly decrease VIP mRNA levels in the capsular portion. Neither ACTH treatment nor changes in sodium intake affected inner zones/medullary VIP message. These data suggest that VIP in the capsule and zona glomerulosa region of the adrenal cortex is regulated in response to the physiological status of the animal, with changes in capsular/zona glomerulosa VIP correlating with changes in zona glomerulosa function.

Abstract
We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of Upsilon(4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 x 10(6) BB macro pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2 beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2 beta = 0.59+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.05(syst) establishes CP violation in the B(0) meson system. We also determine absolute value of lambda = 0.93+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.03(syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

Abstract
Previous studies from our laboratory have reported that adrenomedullin is synthesised in rat zona glomerulosa cells. In the present studies, it was found that the human adrenocortical cell line H295R expresses the gene encoding adrenomedullin, and that immunoreactive adrenomedullin is released into the culture medium. Furthermore, it was found that secretion of adrenomedullin is regulated by angiotensin II and forskolin. Studies on the actions of adrenomedullin and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) revealed a stimulatory effect of adrenomedullin, but not of CGRP, on aldosterone and cortisol secretion. These data suggest that adrenomedullin is not acting by a CGRP receptor-mediated mechanism in the H295R cell line. Adrenomedullin was also found to increase cAMP production, suggesting that in the adrenal, as in other cell types, cAMP is a second messenger for adrenomedullin action. However, the effects of adrenomedullin were not fully mimicked by forskolin, possibly suggesting a role for an additional second messenger. The presence of mRNA encoding both the putative adrenomedullin receptors, L1 and calcitonin receptorlike receptor/receptor-associated modulatory protein 2 (CRLR/RAMP-2), was demonstrated in H295R cells, but RAMP-1 was not detected, suggesting that these cells do not express the CGRPI receptor CRLR/RAMP-1. Taken together, these data have demonstrated that adrenomedullin is synthesised and secreted by H295R cells. The observed rate of adrenomedullin synthesis suggests that this peptide exerts a paracrine/autocrine effect in this adrenocortical cell line, probably acting through a specific adrenomedullin receptor, to stimulate steroidogenesis and increase aldosterone synthase expression.

Abstract
At fertilization in sea urchin, the free radical nitric oxide (NO) has recently been suggested to cause the intracellular Ca(2+) rise responsible for egg activation. The authors suggested that NO could be a universal activator of eggs and the present study was set up to test this hypothesis. Intracellular NO and Ca(2+) levels were monitored simultaneously in eggs of the mouse or the urochordate ascidian Ascidiella aspersa. Eggs were either fertilized or sperm extracts microinjected. Sperm-induced Ca(2+) rises were not associated with any global, or local, change in intracellular NO, although we were able to detect NO produced by the addition of a NO donor. Furthermore, the NO synthase inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester had no effect on sperm-induced Ca(2+) release but did block completely ionomycin-induced NO synthase activation. Therefore, we suggest that the current data provide evidence that NO has no role in the fertilization of these two chordate eggs.

Abstract
Stimulation of aldosterone by a serine protease, trypsin, was first reported in 1982, although the mechanism of this effect was unclear. Recently, a family of protease-activated receptors (PARs) has been described and four members of the family characterised and cloned, including the previously recognised thrombin receptor. This study investigated whether PARs mediate the action of trypsin on aldosterone secretion. Using intact rat adrenal capsular tissue, thrombin was found to increase aldosterone secretion, and the effects of trypsin on aldosterone secretion were confirmed. Both trypsin and thrombin were shown to activate phospholipase C, as measured by an increase in inositol triphosphate turnover by adrenal capsular tissue. It was also shown that U73122, a phospholipase C inhibitor, attenuated the aldosterone response to trypsin. These effects were consistent with the activation of a PAR. Northern blot analysis revealed the presence of mRNA encoding PAR-1, but not PARs-2, -3 or -4 in the adrenal capsule/zona glomerulosa. Messenger RNA encoding PAR-1 was increased by dietary sodium depletion, consistent with previous reports of an increased response to trypsin after sodium depletion. These data suggest that the actions of trypsin on aldosterone secretion are mediated by PAR-1.

Abstract
Most splenic B cells in mice that lack Aiolos are mature IgD(hi)IgM(lo) follicular lymphocytes, suggesting that maturation signals delivered via the BCR are enhanced in the absence of Aiolos. The enhanced maturation of follicular B cells is accompanied by the absence of MZ B lymphocytes and the downregulation of CD21 expression in follicular B cells, all of which depend on the generation of signals via Btk, which is in epistasis to Aiolos. The inverse relationship between the strength of BCR signaling and MZ B cell development is supported by an examination of MZ B cells in CD21 null mice. These data support the view that antigens (in contrast to "tonic" signals) drive the development of naive B cells.

Abstract
We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BbarB decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta = 0.34+/-0.20 (stat)+/-0.05 (syst).

Abstract
Splenic marginal zone B cells of humans and mice are anatomically positioned with specialized macrophages, dendritic and endothelial cells. Together, they function as the first line of defense against blood borne pathogens with a low triggering threshold for B cells providing a rapid proliferative and antibody response to infections. In humans, B cells with similar cytology and physical relations to follicles are found in lymph nodes and Peyer's patches. However, they also develop in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and other sites, such as the thyroid and salivary gland, that normally lack organized lymphoid tissue. Chronic antigenic stimulation at these sites or in response to infection with Hepatitis C provides the milieu for mutations at FAS, API2/ML, TP53 and INK4a/p19ARF and the development of marginal zone lymphomas (MZL) in node, spleen and MALT. Only splenic MZL are seen in mice. A reduced threshold for triggering to proliferation may predispose the marginal zone B cell to neoplasia with mutations in genes regulating apoptosis playing a leading role.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to assess the feasibility of performing universal newborn hearing screening in different clinical settings and tracking the infants who did not pass initial screening through their confirmatory testing. STUDY DESIGN Between December 1996 and December 1997, a total of 11,711 infants were enrolled from five clinically different study sites. Universal newborn hearing screening was performed using automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) testing. Infants who did not pass the initial screening were tested again prior to discharge. Data regarding the rate of referral for follow-up testing, age of infant at screening, the duration of time required for screening, and type of personnel performing the test were collected. Formal audiology appointments were made prior to discharge for infants who required follow-up testing, and letters were sent with phone calls made to those who failed to keep their appointments for repeat testing. Outpatient testing consisted of a repeat AABR and, if necessary, a diagnostic auditory brainstem-evoked response, otoacoustic emission testing, and tympanometry. RESULTS At the time of hospital discharge, the refer rate was < 2% (215 of 11,711 newborns) using AABR screening. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) was confirmed in 32 of these infants, resulting in an overall incidence of confirmed SNHL of 2.7 per thousand newborns. The false-positive rate ranged from 0.3% to 2.5%, with a cumulative false-positive rate of 0.9% (1.5% if all infants lost to follow-up are included as false-positives). No false-negatives were identified. The average time of testing was 7.1 minutes independent of the personnel performing the testing and the age of testing was < 24 hours in 70% of the infants tested. The total number of infants lost to follow-up was 61 (29% of patients referred or 0.5% of the study population). CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that the refer rate for universal hearing screening with the AABR was acceptably low when performed by a variety of personnel in typical nursery settings within the first 24 hours after birth. A low rate of screening failures with the AABR minimizes costs associated with subsequent follow-up assessments and lessens any potential impact of false-positive screening on the parent-newborn relationship.
