Abstract
Rhodococcus sp. NCIMB 9784 accumulated 6- endo-hydroxycamphor 3 when grown on (1 R)-(+)-camphor 1 as sole carbon source. The structure of 3 has been unambiguously assigned for the first time using X-ray crystallography. A soluble cytochrome P450 hydroxylase, induced by growth on (1 R)-(+)-camphor and designated P450(camr), has been isolated from the bacterium Rhodococcus sp. NCIMB 9784. Using authentic 6- endo hydroxycamphor as standard, a cell-free system consisting of pure P450(camr) and putidaredoxin and putidaredoxin reductase from Pseudomonas putida confirmed that the enzyme hydroxylates (1 R)-(+)-camphor specifically in the 6- endoposition, in contrast to the 5- exo hydroxylation catalysed by the well-studied P450(cam) from P. putida. P450(camr) has a molecular mass of approximately 44 kDa, and a pI of 4.8.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with autism experience profound and pervasive difficulties in the social domain. Attempts to teach social behaviours tend to adopt either a behavioural or a 'theory of mind' (ToM) approach. The beneficial aspects and limitations of both paradigms are summarized before an examination of how virtual reality technology may offer a way to combine the strengths from both approaches. METHODS This is not an exhaustive review of the literature; rather, the papers are chosen as representative of the current understanding within each broad topic. Web of Science ISI, EMBASE and PsycInfo were searched for relevant articles. RESULTS Behavioural and ToM approaches to social skills training achieve some success in improving specific skills or understanding. However, the failure to generalize learned behaviours to novel environments, and the unwieldy nature of some behavioural methodologies, means that there is a need for a training package that is easy to administer and successful in promoting learning across contexts. CONCLUSIONS Virtual reality technology may be an ideal tool for allowing participants to practise behaviours in role-play situations, whilst also providing a safe environment for rule learning and repetition of tasks. Role-play within virtual environments could promote the mental simulation of social events, potentially allowing a greater insight into minds. Practice of behaviours, both within and across contexts, could also encourage a more flexible approach to social problem solving. Virtual environments offer a new and exciting perspective on social skills training for people with autistic spectrum disorders.

Abstract
On the evidence of the electron diffraction pattern of the vapor, of the IR spectrum of the matrix-isolated molecule, and of quantum chemical calculations, the diacetyl sulfide molecule, CH3C(O)SC(O)CH3, adopts a planar heavy-atom skeleton with the [sp,ap] conformation. Other conformations contribute little (<1%) to the population of the gaseous molecules at normal temperatures. Salient structural parameters (r(a) structure, distances (in A), angles (in deg), and 3sigma uncertainties in parentheses) were as follows: r(C=O) 1.198(2)/1.196(2), r(C-S) 1.787(3)/1.808(3), r(C-C) 1.483(4)/1.472(4), angleC-S-C 108.8(9), angleS-C=O 125.7(6)/115.1(6), and angleS-C-C 121.1(7)/111.2(7). The structure of a single crystal at 150 K [monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 4.2230(7) A, b = 11.2105(17) A, c = 12.332(2) A, beta = 94.544(16) degrees] also reveals planar molecules with the same conformation and dimensions close to those of the gaseous molecule. Changes in the vibrational spectra of the compound accompanying the transition from the vapor to the condensed phases are attributed not to the presence of more than one conformer but to differences in the local environment of the two carbonyl groups. The properties deduced are compared with those of other compounds of the type CH3C(O)XC(O)CH3 (X = CH2, NH, or O).

Abstract
This study examined anxiety and depressive symptoms among 115 mothers of children undergoing bone marrow transplant and evaluated the ability of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI; A. T. Beck, N. Epstein, et al., 1988) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; A. T. Beck, 1978) to serve as screening tools for assessing generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Mothers with BAI or BDI scores greater than or equal to 14 were administered a structured clinical interview. An additional 20% was randomly selected for interview to determine whether the scale cutoff was an accurate screening method. Among the 64 mothers interviewed, 20% received at least I of the 3 diagnoses. Although the BAI did not demonstrate predictive accuracy in assessing GAD and PD, the BDI did in assessing MDD. The results suggest that a subset of mothers may have an anxiety or depressive disorder and that investigators should use caution before using the BAI as a screening instrument for anxiety disorder.

Abstract
Inhibition of the growth of the human ovarian cancer cell line A2780 by organometallic ruthenium(II) complexes of the type [(eta(6)-arene)Ru(X)(Y)(Z)], where arene is benzene or substituted benzene, X, Y, and Z are halide, acetonitrile, or isonicotinamide, or X,Y is ethylenediamine (en) or N-ethylethylenediamine, has been investigated. The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(en)Cl]PF(6) (5), [(eta(6)-p-cymene)RuCl(2)(isonicotinamide)] (7), and [(eta(6)-biphenyl)Ru(en)Cl]PF(6) (9) are reported. They have "piano stool" geometries with eta(6) coordination of the arene ligand. Complexes with X,Y as a chelated en ligand and Z as a monofunctional leaving group had the highest activity. Complexes 5, 6 (the iodo analogue of 5), 9, and 10 (ethylethylenediamine analogue of 9) were as active as carboplatin. Hydrolysis of the reactive Ru-Cl bond in complex 5 was detected by HPLC but was suppressed by the addition of chloride ions. Complex 5 binds strongly and selectively to G bases on DNA oligonucleotides to form monofunctional adducts. No inhibition of topoisomerase I or II by complexes 5, 6, or 9 was detected. These chelated Ru(II) arene complexes have potential as novel metal-based anticancer agents with a mechanism of action different from that of the Ru(III) complex currently on clinical trial.

Abstract
Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) has been implicated as a powerful pro-inflammatory mediator and may represent a potentially important, therapeutic opportunity for treatment of inflammatory disease and atherosclerosis. To further investigate the role of MCP-1 in inflammatory disorders we have isolated a series of RNA aptamers that bind specifically to mouse MCP-1. The highest affinity aptamers, designated ADR7 and ADR22, have been functionally characterised in vitro and in cell based assays. ADR7 and ADR22 have an affinity of 180 pM and 370 pM respectively for mouse MCP-1, they can antagonise MCP-1 binding to heparin and specifically antagonise MCP-1 induced chemotaxis in a cell based assay. An interesting feature of ADR22 but not ADR7 is that it is capable of antagonising the function of human MCP-1, demonstrating the high level of specificity of these aptamers and that the aptamers recognise MCP-1 in different ways. The aptamers may be used as a tool to further investigate the role of MCP-1 in inflammatory disorders and may also have a role as a therapeutic agent.

Abstract
Treatment of the heterocycle 5-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-3,4-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole (thioxotriazole) with sodium tetrahydroborate at 210 degrees C provides the new [N(3)/S(3)] ambidentate tripod ligand hydridotris(thioxotriazolyl)borate (Tt) as its sodium complex salt. Complexes of this ligand with sodium, bismuth(III), tin(IV), and manganese(I) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structures of these complexes illustrate the ambidentate character of the ligand with the softer metals bismuth and tin exhibiting sulfur coordination, while sodium and manganese(I) bond via the ligand nitrogen donors. In the [S(3)] coordination mode the ligand creates eight-membered chelate rings with the metal with the consequence that the metal ligand unit adopts a propeller-type conformation with C(3)-symmetry. However, in the [N(3)] mode six-membered chelate rings are formed analogous to the familiar hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) ligand.

Abstract
Thermal decomposition of monochlorogallane, [H2GaCl]n, at ambient temperatures releases H2 and results in the formation of gallium(I) species, including the new compound Ga[GaHCl3], which has been characterized crystallographically at 100 K (monoclinic P2(1)/n, a = 5.730(1), b = 6.787(1), c = 14.508(1) A, beta = 97.902(5) degrees ) and by its Raman spectrum. The gallane suffers symmetrical cleavage of the Ga(mu-Cl)2Ga bridge in its reaction with NMe3 but unsymmetrical cleavage, giving [H2Ga(NH3)2](+)Cl(-), in its reaction with NH3. Ethene inserts into the Ga-H bonds to form first [Et(H)GaCl]2 and then [Et2GaCl]2.

Abstract
A series of trigonal bipyramidal pentanuclear complexes involving the alkoxo-diazine ligands poap and p3oap, containing the M(5)[mu-O](6) core is described, which form by a strict self-assembly process. [Co(5)(poap-H)(6)](ClO(4))(4).3H(2)O (1), [Mn(5)(poap-H)(6)](ClO(4))(4).3.5CH(3)OH.H(2)O (2), [Mn(5)(p3oap-H)(6)](ClO(4))(4).CH(3)CH(2)OH.3H(2)O (3), and [Zn(5)(poap-H)(6)](ClO(4))(4).2.5H(2)O (4) are homoleptic pentanuclear complexes, where there is an exact match between the coordination requirements of the five metal ions in the cluster, and the available coordination pockets in the polytopic ligand. [Zn(4)(poap)(poap-H)(3)(H(2)O)(4)] (NO(3))(5).1.5H(2)O (5) is a square [2 x 2] grid with a Zn(4)[mu-O](4) core, and appears to result from the presence of NO(3), which is thought to be a competing ligand in the self-assembly. X-ray structures are reported for 1, 4, and 5. 1 crystallized in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 13.385(1) A, b = 25.797(2) A, c = 28.513(3) A, beta = 98.704(2) degrees, and Z = 4. 4 crystallized in the triclinic system, space group P1 with a = 13.0897(9) A, b = 18.889(1) A, c = 20.506(2) A, alpha = 87.116(1) degrees, beta = 74.280(2) degrees, gamma = 75.809(2) degrees, and Z = 2. 5 crystallized in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 14.8222(7) A, b = 21.408(1) A, c = 21.6197(9) A, beta = 90.698(1) degrees, and Z = 4. Compounds 1-3 exhibit intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling.

Abstract
Gallaborane (GaBH(6), 1), synthesized by the metathesis of LiBH(4) with [H(2)GaCl](n) at ca. 250 K, has been characterized by chemical analysis and by its IR and (1)H and (11)B NMR spectra. The IR spectrum of the vapor at low pressure implies the presence of only one species, viz. H(2)Ga(mu-H)(2)BH(2), with a diborane-like structure conforming to C(2v) symmetry. The structure of this molecule has been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) measurements afforced by the results of ab initio molecular orbital calculations. Hence the principal distances (r(alpha) in A) and angles ( angle(alpha) in deg) are as follows: r(Ga.B), 2.197(3); r(Ga-H(t)), 1.555(6); r(Ga-H(b)), 1.800(6); r(B-H(t)), 1.189(7); r(B-H(b)), 1.286(7); angleH(b)-Ga-H(b), 71.6(4); and angleH(b)-B-H(b), 110.0(5) (t = terminal, b = bridging). Aggregation of the molecules occurs in the condensed phases. X-ray crystallographic studies of a single crystal at 110 K reveal a polymeric network with helical chains made up of alternating pseudotetrahedral GaH(4) and BH(4) units linked through single hydrogen bridges; the average Ga.B distance is now 2.473(7) A. The compound decomposes in the condensed phases at temperatures exceeding ca. 240 K with the formation of elemental Ga and H(2) and B(2)H(6). The reactions with NH(3), Me(3)N, and Me(3)P are also described.

Abstract
Constitutive activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) proteins has been detected in a wide variety of human primary tumor specimens and tumor cell lines including blood malignancies, head and neck cancer, and breast cancer. We have previously demonstrated a high frequency of Stat3 DNA-binding activity that is constitutively-induced by an unknown mechanism in human breast cancer cell lines possessing elevated EGF receptor (EGF-R) and c-Src kinase activities. Using tyrosine kinase selective inhibitors, we show here that Src and JAK family tyrosine kinases cooperate to mediate constitutive Stat3 activation in the absence of EGF stimulation in model human breast cancer cell lines. Inhibition of Src or JAKs results in dose-dependent suppression of Stat3 DNA-binding activity, which is accompanied by growth inhibition and induction of programmed cell death. In addition, transfection of a dominant-negative form of Stat3 leads to growth inhibition involving apoptosis of breast cancer cells. These results indicate that the biological effects of the Src and JAK tyrosine kinase inhibitors are at least partially mediated by blocking Stat3 signaling. While EGF-R kinase activity is not required for constitutive Stat3 activation in breast cancer cells, EGF stimulation further increases STAT DNA-binding activity, consistent with an important role for EGF-R in STAT signaling and malignant progression. Analysis of primary breast tumor specimens from patients with advanced disease revealed that the majority exhibit elevated STAT DNA-binding activity compared to adjacent non-tumor tissues. Our findings, taken together, suggest that tyrosine kinases transduce signals through Stat3 protein that contribute to the growth and survival of human breast cancer cells in culture and potentially in vivo.

Abstract
A new high-pressure single-crystal diffraction facility has been constructed on station 9.8 at the Synchrotron Radiation Source, Daresbury Laboratory, for a range of studies on a variety of systems of relevance to physics, chemistry and materials science that would otherwise prove intractable with conventional laboratory-based methods. The station has been equipped with a modified Enraf-Nonius CAD4 four-circle diffractometer for high-pressure studies which can be conveniently, and rapidly, interchanged with the Bruker SMART CCD area-detector system when more routine ambient-pressure diffraction work is to be undertaken. This rapid change-over has been achieved by permanently mounting the CAD4 on its own jacking table, formerly used for the station's white-beam diffraction mode, which allows the alignment of the SMART diffractometer to remain undisturbed when the CAD4 is in use. Early results on the test low-melting-point compound ethanol (CH3CH2OH) reveal that excellent refined structures can be obtained, including the location and refinement of the H atoms, demonstrating that one of the original, and major, objectives of the station has been accomplished.

Abstract
The 1:1 organic salt of the title compound, C(7)H(6)ClN(2)O(+). C(8)H(5)Cl(2)O(3)(-) or [(2-ABOX)(3,4-D)], comprises the two constituent molecules associated by an R(2)(2)(8) graph-set interaction through the carboxylate group of 3,4-D across the protonated N/N sites of 2-ABOX [N.O 2.546 (3) and 2.795 (3) A]. Cation/anion pairs associate across an inversion centre forming discrete tetramers via an additional three-centre hydrogen-bonding association from the latter N amino proton to a phenoxy O atom [N.O 3.176 (3) A] and a carboxylate O atom [N.O 2.841 (3) A]. This formation differs from the polymeric hydrogen-bonded chains previously observed for adduct structures of 2-ABOX with carboxylic acids.

Abstract
We recorded echolocation calls from 14 sympatric species of bat in Britain. Once digitised, one temporal and four spectral features were measured from each call. The frequency-time course of each call was approximated by fitting eight mathematical functions, and the goodness of fit, represented by the mean-squared error, was calculated. Measurements were taken using an automated process that extracted a single call from background noise and measured all variables without intervention. Two species of Rhinolophus were easily identified from call duration and spectral measurements. For the remaining 12 species, discriminant function analysis and multilayer back-propagation perceptrons were used to classify calls to species level. Analyses were carried out with and without the inclusion of curve-fitting data to evaluate its usefulness in distinguishing among species. Discriminant function analysis achieved an overall correct classification rate of 79% with curve-fitting data included, while an artificial neural network achieved 87%. The removal of curve-fitting data improved the performance of the discriminant function analysis by 2 %, while the performance of a perceptron decreased by 2 %. However, an increase in correct identification rates when curve-fitting information was included was not found for all species. The use of a hierarchical classification system, whereby calls were first classified to genus level and then to species level, had little effect on correct classification rates by discriminant function analysis but did improve rates achieved by perceptrons. This is the first published study to use artificial neural networks to classify the echolocation calls of bats to species level. Our findings are discussed in terms of recent advances in recording and analysis technologies, and are related to factors causing convergence and divergence of echolocation call design in bats.
