Abstract
OBJECTIVE This work was designed to determine the relationship between serum expression level of cytokines and chemokines and progression of human ovarian cancer, and to evaluate the utility and diagnostic value of target markers as risk indicators. MATERIALS AND METHODS A set of candidate cytokines and chemokines (GM-CSF, IFN-γ, GRO, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, TNF-a, VEGF, EGF, RANTES, CCL21/6Ckine, and SDF-1/CXCL12) were measured using Luminex liquid chip technique in healthy women (n=75) and in women with ovarian cancer (n=77). RESULTS EGF, IL-6, MCP-1, 6Ckine, RANTES, and IL-10 were significantly overexpressed in the tumor group compared to those in normal controls, while IL-2 was reduced. The combined markers (EGF, MCP- 1, 6Ckine, IL-6, and TNF-α) achieved 91.1% sensitivity, 65.8% specificity, and 83.3% area under the ROC curve (AUC) in distinguishing serous ovarian cancer from health controls. CONCLUSION This study suggested that serum expression level of cytokines and chemokines correlate with progression of human ovarian cancer. The association of EGF, MCP-1, 6Ckine, IL-6, and TNF-α may contribute to increase diagnosis rate of malignant ovarian tumors.

Abstract
In recent years, procalcitonin and C-reactive protein have been used as important indexes in the detection of inflammation. In order to analyze the combined detection of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in infected patients, 57 subjects in the Clinical Laboratory of Zhengzhou Maternal and Child Health Hospital with a bacterial infection were selected as the observation group. Correspondingly, 57 non-infected subjects were selected for the control group. The procalcitonin and C-reactive protein levels in the included cases were analyzed and compared by extracting peripheral blood. The results showed that the two indexes of C-reactive protein (46.13±8.24 mg/L) and procalcitonin (6.61±3.45 ug/L) of the observation group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P less than 0.05). The positive rates of C-reactive protein (71.93%) and procalcitonin (91.23%) of the observation group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P less than0.05). Within the observation group, the C-reactive protein and procalcitonin levels in the infected patients after 2 and 3 days of treatment, decreased significantly (P less than 0.05). This study indicates that the combined detection of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in patients with bacterial infections is effective and can be used in clinical settings.

Abstract
A novel bi-directional Retarding Field Analyzer (RFA) probe has been installed on a fast reciprocating drive system on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) to measure the ion temperature and fast electron fluxes. A Langmuir probe assembly was added on the top of the RFA head to control the RFA position relative to the last closed flux surface and to have a possibility to measure the electron density and temperature as well. Except the ion temperature, the fast electron fluxes from both ion and electron drift sides have been measured during lower hybrid current drive. The RFA probe has been also used to measure the fast electrons associated with edge localized modes (ELMs), indicating their substantial presence in the scrape-off-layer plasma of EAST.

Abstract
miRNAs are small non-coding regulatory RNAs that play key roles in diverse biological processes. In this study, we used the Solexa sequencing technique to profile miRNAs in breeder cock testes to illustrate their functions. A total of 663 co-expressed miRNAs and 3,180 co-expressed piRNAs were detected in three libraries. Based on Mir-X™ miRNA qRT-PCR, three miRNAs representing low, medium and high expression levels according to the sequencing results were selected randomly to validate the miRNAs' expression profiles. Results suggested that the miRNA expression profiles data could represent actual miRNA expression levels. Moreover, target genes prediction of the co-expressed miRNAs and further Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses were performed, which revealed that some candidate miRNAs were involved in the regulation of the spermatogenesis process, spermatozoa function and testicular metabolism. In conclusion, we provided a useful resource for further elucidation of the miRNAs' regulatory role in spermatogenesis, contributing to a preliminary database for functional and molecular mechanistic studies in testicular metabolism, spermatogenesis and other testes functions.

Abstract
Uranium (U) has been released to surface soil and groundwater through military and industrial activities. Soluble forms of U transferred to drinking water sources and food supplements can potentially threaten humans and the biosphere due to its chemical toxicity and radioactivity. The immobilization of aqueous U onto iron-based minerals is one of the most vital geochemical processes controlling the transport of U. As a consequence, much research has been focused on the use of iron-based materials for the treatment of U contaminated waters. One material currently being tested is nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI). However, understanding the removal mechanism of U onto nZVI is crucial to develop new technologies for contaminated water resources. This review article aims to provide information on the removal mechanism of U onto nZVI under different conditions (pH, U concentration, solution ion strength, humic acid, presence of O2 and CO2, microorganism effect) pertinent to environmental and engineered systems, and to provide risk or performance assessment results with the stability of nZVI products after removal of U in environmental restoration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia patients have a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) than normals. We examined the relationship between IGT and clinical phenotypes or cognitive deficits in first-episode, drug-naïve (FEDN) Han Chinese patients with schizophrenia. METHOD A total of 175 in-patients were compared with 31 healthy controls on anthropometric measures and fasting plasma levels of glucose, insulin and lipids. They were also compared using a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Neurocognitive functioning was assessed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Patient psychopathology was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). RESULTS Of the patients, 24.5% had IGT compared with none of the controls, and they also had significantly higher levels of fasting blood glucose and 2-h glucose after an oral glucose load, and were more insulin resistant. Compared with those patients with normal glucose tolerance, the IGT patients were older, had a later age of onset, higher waist or hip circumference and body mass index, higher levels of low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides and higher insulin resistance. Furthermore, IGT patients had higher PANSS total and negative symptom subscale scores, but no greater cognitive impairment except on the emotional intelligence index of the MCCB. CONCLUSIONS IGT occurs with greater frequency in FEDN schizophrenia, and shows association with demographic and anthropometric parameters, as well as with clinical symptoms but minimally with cognitive impairment during the early course of the disorder.

Abstract
Shuangren-Anshen capsule (SAC) is a traditional Chinese herb that was improved in our laboratory. An orthogonal experiment [L9(3)(4)] was used to optimize the extraction conditions. In vivo, a hemorrhage mouse model was established and the hemoglobin contents of normal control, model control, and treated mice were measured. Additionally, the sedative and hypnotic effects of SACs were assessed based on pharmacological parameters such as changes in locomotive activity, forelimb raising, sleep latency, sleep duration, and number of mice that fell asleep. Brain tissue was sectioned and stained to detect changes in cell morphology by microscopy. The optimum extraction was achieved with 3 cycles of decoction for 120 min each with a 10-fold volume of water added. In the model control group, hemoglobin content significantly decreased and pharmacological parameters increased (P < 0.01) relative to that in the normal control group. Compared to the model control group, the group treated with 0.9 g/kg SAC showed significant (P < 0.05) increase or decrease in hemoglobin content and all pharmacological parameters except sleep duration. The groups treated with 1.8 or 3.6 g/kg SAC and the positive control group also showed significant alterations in hemoglobin content and pharmacological parameters (P < 0.05). In addition, SAC exhibited a protective effect on the morphological structures of the damaged nerve cells in the mouse model. Thus, an optimal extraction process was successfully identified. The pharmacological data also suggests that the drug can improve sleep quality. SAC treatment was shown to cause changes in hemoglobin content and cell morphology in a mouse model.

Abstract
Myostatin (MSTN) is an important member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily and is a muscle growth inhibitor. In the present study, we cloned the Chinese perch MSTN cDNA sequence and analyzed its expression patterns under various conditions. The MSTN full cDNA sequence was 3347 bp long, including an open-reading frame of 1131 bp, which encoded 376 amino acids. Sequence analysis demonstrated that the MSTN shared a highly conserved signal peptide, a TGF-β functional peptide, a hydrolytic site (RARR), and nine conservative cysteine residues with other members of the TGF-β superfamily. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree analyses indicated that the MSTN had a close relationship with teleostean fish, but they are far separated from mammals. Real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the MSTN was strongly expressed in the skeletal muscle and heart tissues. Temporal expression analysis demonstrated that the MSTN gene was expressed in very low levels, from 20 to 90 dph (post-hatching development), and was at its highest level at 150 dph (P < 0.05). The fasting-re-feeding experiment showed that the expression of the MSTN gene was initially decreased in response to a single meal, after seven days of fasting, and subsequently increased significantly, and finally decreased back to its original level. Together, our results provided valuable knowledge regarding the regulation of MSTN gene expression in Chinese perch.

Abstract
Objective:To explore the clinical value of vestibular autorotation test (VAT) in the treatment for otogenic vertigo patients. Method:One hundred and twenty-nine definite otogenic vertigo patients were included. All patients underwent the VAT and caloric test (CT). The results were analyzed statistically. Result:In VAT examination, 89 (69.0%) cases were abnormal. In CT examination, 56 (43.4%) cases were abnormal. In the contrast test of VAT and CT, VAT results were abnormal in 47 (36.4%) patients and CT results were abnormal in 14 (10.9%) patients. The number of patients whose both VAT and CT results were abnormal was 42 (32.6%). The total number of patients with various abnormal results was 103 (79.8%). According to statistical analysis, the abnormal result rate of VAT was higher than that of CT. The abnormal result rate of both VAT and CT was higher than that of each single test. There was statistic significance in the difference (χ²=1.670, P<0.05). Conclusion:For otogenic vertigo patients, their abnormal result rate of VAT is higher than that of CT. VAT and CT can be mutually complementary. The combination of VAT and CT can help to understand the function of semicircular canal in the general and provide reference for the treatment of otogenic vertigo diseases.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate frequency and position characteristics of the vestibular dysfunction in vestublar neuritis patients. Method:Colaric test (CT), head impulse test (HIT), cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) were applied in 43 vestublar neuritis patients to assess their vestublar dysfunction. Superior vestublar nerve (S-VN), inferior vestibular nerve (I-VN), total vestibular nerve (T-VN) and each vestibular end organ incidence rate were calculated and statistically analyzed. Result:CT incidence rate (93.0%) was statistically higher than that of HIT (72.1%) (P<0.01). Total frequency incidence rate (72.1%) was statistically higher than that of low frequency (20.9%) (P<0.01). No high frequency only case was observed. The incidence rate of S-VN only, I-VN only and T-VN was 44.2%, 4.7% and 51.2% respectively. Among them, the incidence rate of I-VN was significantly lower than the others (P<0.01). The incidence rate of vestibular end organs was 17.4% (S-SCC), 44.2% (H-SCC), 20.9% (P-SCC), 39.5% (utricule) and 26.7% (saccule) respectively. The incidence rate of H-SCC was remarkably higher than the other semicircular canals (P<0.01). The difference between utricule and saccule was not statistically significant. Conclusion:The semicricular canal dysfunction in vestibular neuritis patients mainly involves total frequency of vestibular function, low frequency is more common than high frequency. Total vestibular nerve and single S-VN are mostly involved in vestibular neuritis.

Abstract
The oral administration of Enterococcus faecium EF1 to new-born suckling and weaning piglets along with their growth performances and intestinal microbiota was investigated in this study. Twenty-four new-born piglets were initially divided into 2 groups. The probiotics group received 2 ml of 10% sterilised skimmed milk by oral gavage supplemented with 6×10(8) cfu/ml viable E. faecium EF1 at the first, the third and the fifth day after birth, while the control group received 2 ml of 10% sterilised skimmed milk without probiotics at the same time. Results showed that oral administration of E. faecium EF1 was associated with a remarkable increase on the body weight of piglets for both suckling and weaning periods, by 30.73% (P<0.01) and 320.84% (P<0.01), and also decreased the diarrhoea rate, by 43.21% (P<0.05) and 71.42% (P<0.05), respectively. In addition, 454-pyrosequencing analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in the intestinal microbial diversity of the suckling piglets between the two groups; nevertheless, when compared to the control group, the relative abundance of Firmicutes in the probiotics group was substantially augmented, while the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria diminished. However, results indicated that oral administration of E. faecium EF1 did not have any influence on the relative abundance of Firmicutes in weaning piglets rather than increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and decreasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria. Furthermore, at the level of the Firmicutes phylum, the relative abundance of Lactobacillales in the probiotic group increased significantly. These findings suggest that oral administration of E. faecium EF1 to new-born piglets could improve the growth performance and intestinal microbiota of piglets for both suckling and weaning periods.

Abstract
Deformation twinning in pure aluminum has been considered to be a unique property of nanostructured aluminum. A lingering mystery is whether deformation twinning occurs in coarse-grained or single-crystal aluminum at scales beyond nanotwins. Here, we present the first experimental demonstration of macrodeformation twins in single-crystal aluminum formed under an ultrahigh strain rate (∼10^{6} s^{-1}) and large shear strain (200%) via dynamic equal channel angular pressing. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the frustration of subsonic dislocation motion leads to transonic deformation twinning. Deformation twinning is rooted in the rate dependences of dislocation motion and twinning, which are coupled, complementary processes during severe plastic deformation under ultrahigh strain rates.

Abstract
A multi-energy soft x-ray (ME-SXR) diagnostic has been built for electron temperature profile in the edge plasma region in Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) after two rounds of campaigns. Originally, five preamplifiers were mounted inside the EAST vacuum vessel chamber attached to five vertically stacked compact diode arrays. A custom mechanical structure was designed to protect the detectors and electronics under constraints of the tangential field of view for plasma edge and the allocation of space. In the next experiment, the mechanical structure was redesigned with a barrel structure to absolutely isolate it from the vacuum vessel. Multiple shielding structures were mounted at the pinhole head to protect the metal foils from lithium coating. The pre-amplifiers were moved to the outside of the vacuum chamber to avoid introducing interference. Twisted copper cooling tube was embedded into the back-shell near the diode to limit the temperature of the preamplifiers and diode arrays during vacuum vessel baking when the temperature reached 150 °C. Electron temperature profiles were reconstructed from ME-SXR measurements using neural networks.

Abstract
We investigated 168 children and analysed the virological characterization and association with disease progression in children with hepatitis B virus (HBV) basal core promoter/precore (BCP/PC) mutants. Among 168 patients with HBV infection (aged 0.5-18 years old, mean 10.1), 86 of them had HBV-related liver cirrhosis (LC) and 82 had HBV-related chronic hepatitis B (CHB). A direct sequencing method was employed to determine the HBV genotypes and the mutations in BCP/PC regions. In all, 133 of them were infected with genotype C viruses (79.17%); only 35 patients (20.83%) were infected with genotype B viruses. Both LC patients and CHB patients had significantly higher ratios of genotype C when compared with the ratios of genotype B (83.7%-16.3% versus 74.4%-25.6%). For patients with CHB, the prevalence of BCP/PC wild-type viruses was 52.4%; but this was only 4.7% in patients with LC. The C1653T, T1753C, A1762T/G1764A and G1896A mutations had a significantly higher prevalence in patients with LC. Among all the patients with genotype B viruses, those with LC had lower HBV DNA levels and higher G1899A mutation frequency than patients with CHB. Among all the patients with genotype C viruses, the patients with LC had higher prevalence of C1653T, A1762T/G1764A and G1896A mutation frequency, higher hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) -negative rates, lower viral load, lower elevated alanine aminotransferase and lower anti-HBe positive rates than CHB patients. The HBV BCP/PC variants were more common in HBeAg-negative LC patients than in the CHB group (BCP, 53.4% versus 15.6%; PC, 18.6% versus 3.7%, respectively, p < 0.001). Patients with HBV genotype C viruses, high viral load and C1653T, A1762T/G1764A, G1896A mutant viruses, were more susceptible to developing LC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. MicroRNAs play important roles in the progression of CRC. This study aimed to investigate the role of miR-206 and its novel mechanism in the invasion and metastasis of CRC. METHODOLOGY Real-time RT-PCR or Western blotting was used to detect the expressions of miR-206, FMNL2 and c-MET in CRC cell lines and tissues. Luciferase reporter assays were conducted to detect the associations between miR-206 and 3'UTRs of FMNL2 and c-MET. A series of loss-of-function and gain-of-function assays were performed to evaluate the effect of miR-206 on the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of CRC cells. RESULTS miR-206 was significantly down-regulated in CRC tissues and correlated closely with differentiation, lymphatic metastasis and serosal invasion. miR-206 suppressed CRC cell proliferation by arresting CRC cells in the G1/G0 phase and accelerating apoptosis. miR-206 also inhibited cell invasion and lung metastasis in CRC cells. Mechanically, FMNL2 and c-MET were identified as direct targets of miR-206. And FMNL2 rescued the suppression of miR-206 in the proliferation and invasion of CRC cells. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed functional and mechanistic links between miR-206 and oncogene FMNL2 and c-MET in the progression of CRC. miR-206 functioned as a tumor suppressor in the progression of CRC by targeting FMNL2 and c-MET. Restoration of miR-206 expression may represent a promising therapeutic approach for targeting malignant CRC.

Abstract
This study investigated the correlation of plama levels of inflammatory biomarkers [soluble cluster of differentiation 40 ligand (sCD40L), alpha fetoprotein A (fetuin-A), and pregnancy-associated protein A (PAPP-A)] with carotid plaque in patients with acute ischemic stroke. After undergoing color Doppler ultrasonography of the bilateral carotid arteries, 200 patients with acute ischemic stroke were grouped into plaque and non-plaque groups. The plaque group was further divided into stable and unstable plaque sub-groups by carotid plaque stability. Inter-group and -subgroup comparisons included demographic characteristics, current condition and medical history, and clinical laboratory and plama inflammatory biomarker data, and logistic regression explored the correlations between plama inflammatory biomarker levels and carotid plaques. Significantly higher sCD40L and fetuin-A levels were found in the plaque group than in the non-plaque group (all P < 0.05), with odds ratios (plaque vs non-plaque) of 6.372 and 4.101, respectively. Increased plama inflammatory biomarker levels were accompanied by a high risk of carotid plaque formation. Similarly, significantly higher plama sCD40L and PAPP-A levels were found in the unstable plaque subgroup than in the stable plaque subgroup (all P < 0.05), and the odds ratios (unstable vs stable) were 5.290 and 4.125, respectively. Increased plama inflammatory biomarker levels were accompanied by a high risk of carotid plaque instability. The study findings showed that plasma sCD40L, fetuin-A, and PAPP-A levels are associated with carotid plaque formation and instability. Fetuin-A and sCD40L might be predictors of carotid plaque formation, while PAPP-A and sCD40L might be predictors of carotid plaque instability.

Abstract
Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a protein produced by plants in response to adverse environmental stresses. In this study, we identified and analyzed Hsp90 gene family members using a bioinformatic method based on genomic data from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). The results illustrated that tomato contains at least 7 Hsp90 genes distributed on 6 chromosomes; protein lengths ranged from 267-794 amino acids. Intron numbers ranged from 2-19 in the genes. The phylogenetic tree revealed that Hsp90 genes in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana L.) could be divided into 5 groups, which included 3 pairs of orthologous genes and 4 pairs of paralogous genes. Expression analysis of RNA-sequence data showed that the Hsp90-1 gene was specifically expressed in mature fruits, while Hsp90-5 and Hsp90-6 showed opposite expression patterns in various tissues of cultivated and wild tomatoes. The expression levels of the Hsp90-1, Hsp90-2, and Hsp90- 3 genes in various tissues of cultivated tomatoes were high, while both the expression levels of genes Hsp90-3 and Hsp90-4 were low. Additionally, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that these genes were involved in the responses to yellow leaf curl virus in tomato plant leaves. Our results provide a foundation for identifying the function of the Hsp90 gene in tomato.
