Abstract
Apocynin, a potent inhibitor of NADPH-oxidase, was widely studied for activities in diseases such as inflammation-mediated disorders, asthma and cardiovascular diseases. In our recent study, a novel nitrone derivative of apocynin, AN-1, demonstrated potent inhibition to oxidative injury and to high expression of gp91phox subunit of NADPH-oxidase induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP) in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells, and displayed promising preclinical protective effect against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury in rats. In this work, the pharmacokinetic behaviors of AN-1 in Sprague-Dawley rats with single intravenous and intragastric doses were investigated for further development. Furthermore, apocynin’s pharmacokinetics remain lacking, even though its pharmacological action has been extensively evaluated. The pharmacokinetics of parent apocynin were also comparatively characterized. A simple HPLC method was developed and validated to determine both AN-1 and apocynin in rat plasma. The chromatographic separation was achieved on an Agilent HC-C18 column (250 mm×4.6 mm, 5 µm) at an isocratic flow rate of 1.0 mL/min, with the mobile phase of methanol and water (53∶47, v/v) and the UV detection set at 279 nm. Good linearity was established over the concentration range of 0.1–500 µg/mL for AN-1 and 0.2–100 µg/mL for apocynin. The absolute recovery, precision and accuracy were satisfactory. Compared with the parent compound apocynin, AN-1 yielded a much longer T1/2 (AN-1 179.8 min, apocynin 6.1 min) and higher AUC0–t (AN-1 61.89 mmol/L·min, apocynin 2.49 mmol/L·min) after equimolar intravenous dosing (0.302 mmol/kg). The absolute bioavailability of oral AN-1 was 78%, but that of apocynin was only 2.8%. The significant improvement of pharmacokinetic behavior might be accounted for the effective pharmacodynamic results we documented for the novel nitrone derivative AN-1.

Abstract
Raman spectral measurements have been carried out for neat 3'-methoxy acetophenone (3'-MAP) and binary liquid mixtures of 3'-MAP in three solvents of different polarity. Also Density Functional Theory (DFT) geometry optimization and vibrational wavenumber calculation have been performed on monomer and dimer structures of 3'-MAP to analyze the experimentally observed Raman spectrum. Mulliken charge analysis has also been made on optimized geometries of 3'-MAP with solvents. The changes associated with the observed peak position, intensity and linewidth in the carbonyl stretching mode of 3'-MAP are explained as a consequence of intermolecular interactions between solute-solute and solute-solvent molecules. This analysis reports that the solute-solvent interaction is dominant in the case of binary liquid mixtures of 3'-MAP with ethanol compared to DMF and benzene.

Abstract
In this work, the vibrational spectral analysis was carried out by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy in the regions of 4000-400 cm(-1) and 3500-100 cm(-1), respectively for 2',4'-difluoroacetophenone (DFAP). The molecular structure, fundamental vibrational frequencies and intensity of the vibrational bands are interpreted with the aid of structure optimizations and normal coordinate force field calculations based on Hartree-Fock (HF), density functional theory (DFT) using B3LYP and LSDA methods with 6-31G basis set combination. The mixing of the fundamental modes was determined with the help of potential energy distribution (PED). The energies of the frontier molecular orbitals have also been determined. Complete NBO analysis was also carried out using B3LYP/6-31G level of theory to find out the intramolecular electronic interactions and their stabilization energy. Thermodynamic properties of the title compound were calculated at the different temperature. Finally, the calculation results were applied to simulate FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of the title compound which show good agreement with observed spectra.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the chemical constituents of the dichloromethane extract from pine needles of Cedrus deodara. METHODS The chemical constituents were isolated and purified from the dichloromethane extract of pine needles by chromatography on silica gel and Sephadex LH-20. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of spectral data and chemical properties. RESULTS Seven compounds were isolated and their chemical structures were identified as ferulic acid (1), osthole (2), beta-phenylacrylic acid (3), paeonol (4), beta-sitosterol (5), magnolol (6) and honokiol (7). CONCLUSION Compounds 1 - 4, 6 and 7 are isolated from this plant for the first time.

Abstract
Adhatoda vasica Nees, Acanthaceae, is well known plant in Ayurveda and Unani medicine. The purpose of this study was to characterize the most bioactive phytochemicals viz., vasicine, vasicinone, vasicine acetate, 2-acetyl benzyl amine, vasicinolone present in the chloroform fraction having anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. The anti-inflammatory activity was tested by using carrageenan and CFA-model induced paw oedema. The antimicrobial activity of isolated compounds was assessed by using the microdilution method. The observed results revealed that vasicine showed most potent anti-inflammatory effects (59.51%) at the dose of 20.0mg/kg at 6h after carrageenan injection and maximum inhibition rate was observed of vasicinone (63.94%) at the dose of 10.0mg/kg at 4 days after CFA injection. The strong antibacterial activity was exhibited by vasicine at 20μg/ml dose against E. coli and also demonstrated maximum antifungal activity against C. albicans at the dose of >55μg/ml. All the five alkaloids demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities.

Abstract
Apocynin is the most employed inhibitor of NADPH oxidase (NOX), a multienzymatic complex capable of catalyzing the one-electron reduction of molecular oxygen to the superoxide anion. Despite controversies about its selectivity, apocynin has been used as one of the most promising drugs in experimental models of inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we aimed to study the chemical and biophysical properties of apocynin. The oxidation potential was determined by cyclic voltammetry (Epa = 0.76V), the hydrophobicity index was calculated (logP = 0.83) and the molar absorption coefficient was determined (e275nm = 1.1 × 104 M-1 cm-1). Apocynin was a weak free radical scavenger (as measured using the DPPH, peroxyl radical and nitric oxide assays) when compared to protocatechuic acid, used here as a reference antioxidant. On the other hand, apocynin was more effective than protocatechuic acid as scavenger of the non-radical species hypochlorous acid. Apocynin reacted promptly with the non-radical reactive species H2O2 only in the presence of peroxidase. This finding is relevant, since it represents a new pathway for depleting H2O2 in cellular experimental models, besides the direct inhibition of NADPH oxidase. This could be relevant for its application as an inhibitor of NOX4, since this isoform produces H2O2 and not superoxide anion. The binding parameters calculated by fluorescence quenching showed that apocynin binds to human serum albumin (HSA) with a binding affinity of 2.19 × 104 M-1. The association did not alter the secondary and tertiary structure of HSA, as verified by synchronous fluorescence and circular dichroism. The displacement of fluorescent probes suggested that apocynin binds to site I and site II of HSA. Considering the current biomedical applications of this phytochemical, the dissemination of these chemical and biophysical properties can be very helpful for scientists and physicians interested in the use of apocynin.

Abstract
Arterenone (2-amino-3',4'-dihydroxy acetophenone) is an important hydrolytic product generated from lightly colored sclerotized cuticle that use N-acyldopamine derivatives for crosslinking reactions. It seems to arise from 1,2-dehydro-N-acetyldopamine (dehydro NADA) that has been crosslinked to the cuticular components. However, the mechanism of generation of arterenone, which has two protons on the α-carbon and no proton on the β-carbon atom from dehydro NADA crosslinks that have one proton each on these two side chain carbons, remained elusive and undetermined. To investigate the mechanism of this transformation, we synthesized specifically labeled β-deuterated dehydro NADA and incubated with Sarcophaga bullata cuticle undergoing larval puparial transformation. We also isolated the dimeric products formed during the tyrosinase-mediated oxidation of dehydro NADA. Hydrolysis of both β-deuterated dehydro NADA treated cuticle and β-deuterated dehydro NADA dimer generated arterenone as the major hydrolytic product. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis of this arterenone revealed the retention of deuterium from the β-position of dehydro NADA at the α-carbon atom of arterenone. Hydrolysis of β-deuterated dehydro NADA also generated the labeled arterenone under oxidative conditions, but not under anaerobic conditions. These results indicate the unique hydride shift from β-carbon to α-carbon during acid hydrolysis and reveal the mechanism of liberation of arterenone and related compounds from dehydro NADA linked cuticle.

Abstract
The molecular structure of two mixed and closely related conformers of the title compound, C13H16O2, found in the solid with unequal occupancies has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The substance crystallizes in the monoclinic Pca2(1) space group with a=17.279(2), b=5.1716(7), c=12.549(2)Å, and Z=4 molecules per unit cell. The structure was solved from 1314 reflections with I>2σI and refined to an agreement R1-factor of 0.049. The minor conformer (34.7%) is nearly mirror-related to and extensively overlapped with the major one. The skeleton of the 4-hydroxyacetophenone molecular fragment and the prenyl group, (CH2)(CH)C(CH3)2, pendant arm attached to it are both planar and perpendicular to each other. A strong intermolecular O-H⋯O bond links neighboring molecules in the lattice to produce a polymeric structure. The conformational structures of the compound in the gas phase have been calculated by the DFT method and the geometrical results have been compared with the X-ray data. These data allow a complete assignment of vibration modes in the solid state FTIR and Raman spectra. The calculated 1H and 13C chemicals shifts are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental NMR spectra of the compound in solution.

Abstract
Some apocynin analogues have exhibited outstanding inhibition to NADPH oxidase. In this study, the key interactions between apocynin analogues and NADPH oxidase were analyzed by the docking method. The potential active site was first identified by the SiteID program combining with the key residue CYS378. Afterwards, the compounds in the training set were docked into NADPH oxidase (1K4U) under specific docking constraints to discuss the key interactions between ligands and the receptor. These key interactions were then validated by the consistence between the docking result and the experimental result of the test set. The result reveals that the Pi interaction between apocynin analogues and NADPH oxidase has a direct contribution to inhibition activities, except for H-bond formation and docking score. The key interactions might be valuable to discover and screen apocynin analogues as potent inhibitors of NADPH oxidase.

Abstract
The Brønsted-acidic ionic liquid 1-methyl-3-(4-sulfobutyl)imidazolium triflate [BMIM(SO3H)][OTf] was demonstrated to act efficiently as solvent and catalyst for the halogenation of activated organic compounds with N-halosuccinimides (NXS) under mild conditions with short reaction times. Methyl aryl ketones were converted into α-halo and α,α-dihaloketones, depending on the quantity of NXS used. Ketones with activated aromatic rings were selectively halogenated, however in some cases mixtures of α-halogenated ketone and ring-halogenated ketones were obtained. Activated aromatics were regioselectively ring halogenated to give mono- and dihalo-substituted products. The [BMIM(SO3H)][OTf] ionic liquid (IL-A) was successfully reused eight times in a representative monohalogenation reaction with no noticeable decrease in efficiency. An effective halogenation scale-up in this IL is also presented. The reactivity trend and the observed chemo- and regioselectiivities point to an ET process in these IL-promoted halofunctionalization reactions.

Abstract
One of the leading causes of death in the world is cerebrovascular disease. Numerous Chinese traditional medicines, such as Cortex Moutan (root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrew) and Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae (root and rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge), protect against cerebrovascular diseases and exhibit anti-atherosclerotic effects. Traditional medicines have been routinely used for a long time in China. In addition, these two herbs are prescribed together in clinical practice. Therefore, the pharmacodynamic interactions between the active constituents of these two herbs, which are paeonol (Pae) and danshensu (DSS), should be particularly studied. The study of Pae and DSS can provide substantial foundations in understanding their mechanisms and empirical evidence to support clinical practice. This study investigated the effects and possible mechanisms of the pharmacodynamic interaction between Pae and DSS on cerebrovascular malfunctioning in diabetes. Experimental diabetes was induced in rats, which was then treated with Pae, DSS, and Pae + DSS for eight weeks. Afterward, cerebral arteries from all groups were isolated and equilibrated in an organ bath with Krebs buffer and ring tension. Effects of Pae, DSS, and Pae + DSS were observed on vessel relaxation with or without endothelium as well as on the basal tonus of vessels from normal and diabetic rats. Indexes about oxidative stress were also determined. We report that the cerebral arteries from diabetic rats show decreased vascular reactivity to acetylcholine (ACh) which was corrected in Pae, DSS, and Pae + DSS treated groups. Furthermore, phenylephrine (PE)-induced contraction response decreased in the treated groups. Phenylephrine and CaCl(2)-induced vasoconstrictions are partially inhibited in the three treated groups under Ca2+-free medium. Pre-incubated with tetraethylammonium, a non-selective K+ channel blocker, the antagonized relaxation responses increased in DSS and Pae + DSS treated diabetic groups compared with those in diabetic and Pae-treated diabetic groups. In addition, superoxide dismutase activity and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances content significantly changed in the presence of Pae + DSS. We therefore conclude that both Pae and DSS treatments prevent diabetes-induced vascular damage. Furthermore, Pae + DSS prove to be the most efficient treatment regimen. The combination of Pae and DSS produce significant protective effects through the reduction of oxidative stress and through intracellular Ca2+ regulatory mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Traditional Chinese medicinal herbs Cortex Moutan and Radix Salviae Milthiorrhizaeare are prescribed together for their putative cardioprotective effects in clinical practice. However, the rationale of the combined use remains unclear. The present study was designed to investigate the cardioprotective effects of paeonol and danshensu (representative active ingredient of Cortex Moutan and Radix Salviae Milthiorrhizae, respectively) on isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in rats and its underlying mechanisms. Methodology Paeonol (80 mg kg−1) and danshensu (160 mg kg−1) were administered orally to Sprague Dawley rats in individual or in combination for 21 days. At the end of this period, rats were administered isoproterenol (85 mg kg−1) subcutaneously to induce myocardial injury. After induction, rats were anaesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (35 mg kg−1) to record electrocardiogram, then sacrificed and biochemical assays of the heart tissues were performed. Principal Findings Induction of rats with isoproterenol resulted in a marked (P<0.001) elevation in ST-segment, infarct size, level of serum marker enzymes (CK-MB, LDH, AST and ALT), cTnI, TBARS, protein expression of Bax and Caspase-3 and a significant decrease in the activities of endogenous antioxidants (SOD, CAT, GPx, GR, and GST) and protein expression of Bcl-2. Pretreatment with paeonol and danshensu combination showed a significant (P<0.001) decrease in ST-segment elevation, infarct size, cTnI, TBARS, protein expression of Bax and Caspase-3 and a significant increase in the activities of endogenous antioxidants and protein expression of Bcl-2 and Nrf2 when compared with individual treated groups. Conclusions/Significance This study demonstrates the cardioprotective effect of paeonol and danshensu combination on isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in rats. The mechanism might be associated with the enhancement of antioxidant defense system through activating of Nrf2 signaling and anti-apoptosis through regulating Bax, Bcl-2 and Caspase-3. It could provide experimental evidence to support the rationality of combinatorial use of traditional Chinese medicine in clinical practice.

Abstract
The o-Hydroxy acetophenone [N-(3-hydroxy-2-naphthoyl)] hydrazone (H(2)o-HAHNH) has been prepared and its structure is confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, (1)H NMR and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. It has been used to produce diverse complexes with Co(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and U(VI)O(2) ions. The isolated complexes have been investigated by elemental analysis, magnetic measurements, molar conductivity, thermal (TG, DTG) and spectral ((1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, IR, UV-visible, MS) studies. Infrared spectra suggested H(2)o-HAHNH acts as a bidentate and/or tridentate ligand. The electronic spectrum of [Co(Ho-HAHNH)(2)] complex as well as its magnetic moments suggesting octahedral geometry around Co(II) center. The TG analyses suggest high stability for most complexes followed by thermal decomposition in different steps. Moreover, the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters (Ea, A, ΔH, ΔS and ΔG) for the different decomposition steps of the [Co(Ho-HAHNH)(2)] and [Cd(Ho-HAHNH)(2)] complexes were calculated using the Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger methods. Moreover, the antibacterial and antifungal activities of the isolated compounds were studied using a wide spectrum of bacterial and fungal strains.

Abstract
Structural and vibrational properties of 4-hydroxy-3-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)acetophenone, isolated from Senecio nutans Sch. Bip. (Asteraceae) were studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopies in solid phase. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) method together with Pople's basis set show seven stable conformers for the compound in the gas phase and that only two conformations are probably present in the solid phase. The harmonic vibrational wavenumbers for the optimized geometry were calculated at B3LYP/6-31G and B3LYP/6-311++G levels. For a complete assignment of the vibrational spectra, DFT calculations were combined with Pulay´s Scaled Quantum Mechanics Force Field (SQMFF) methodology in order to fit the theoretical wavenumber values to the experimental ones. Then, a complete assignment of all the observed bands in the vibrational spectra was performed. The natural bond orbital (NBO) study reveals the characteristics of the electronic delocalization of the two stable structures, while the corresponding topological properties of electronic charge density were analyzed by employing Bader's Atoms in the Molecules theory (AIM).

Abstract
Bengalensinone (22β-hydroxylup-12,20-dien-3-one; 1), a new lupane triterpene, and benganoic acid (2), a new apocarotenoid, together with lupanyl acetate, 3-acetoxy-9(11),12-ursandiene, stigmasterol, alpinumisoflavone, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxymellein, and p-coumeric acid were isolated from the methanolic extract of the aerial roots of Ficus bengalensis. The structures of these compounds were established by the combination of 1D NMR (¹H and ¹³C NMR) and 2D NMR (HMQC, HMBC, and COSY) analyses, and mass spectrometry (EI-MS and HR-EI-MS), and in comparison with literature data of the related compounds. Compounds 1 and 2 displayed inhibitory potential against enzyme cholinesterase in a concentration-dependent manner with IC₅₀ values 194.5 and 154.5 μM for acetylcholinesterase and 224.9 and 120.0 μM for butyrycholinesterase, respectively.

Abstract
A new acetophenone, 1-[2,4-dihydroxy-5-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)phenyl]ethanone (1) was isolated from the root bark of Derris indica, along with 3,7,-dimethoxy-3',4'-methylenedioxyflavone (desmethoxykanugin) (2), 5-methoxyfurano[4",5":6,7]flavone (pinnatin) (3), and 3'-hydroxyfurano[4",5":7,8]flavone (pongol) (4). The structures of these compounds were established by means of chemical and spectral studies. The occurrence of this prenylated acetophenone in D. indica is of biogenetic and chemotaxonomic significance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the chemical constituents in water-soluble fraction of Carthamus tinctorius. METHODS Compounds were isolated and purified by macroporus resin, silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and preparative HPLC. The structures were identified by spectral analysis. RESULTS Twelve compounds were isolated and identified as 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde (1); E-1-(4'-hydroxypheny) -but-1-en-3-one (2); 3-Formylindole (3); 2-Acetyl-5-hydroxymethylfuran (4); p-Hydroxycinnamic acid (5); (6R, 7E, 9R) -9-hydroxy-4,7-megastigmandien-3-one (6); 4-hydroxyacetophenone (7); 5-(hydroxymethyl) -2-furaldehyde (8); 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid (9); Stigmasterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (10); Daucosterol (11); beta-sitosterol (12). CONCLUSION Compounds 1 - 4, 6, 7, 10 are isolated from this plant for the first time.

Abstract
Successful implementation of ultrasound irradiation for the rapid synthesis of a novel series of 3-[1-(4-substituted-5-(aryldiazenyl)thiazol-2-yl)hydrazono)ethyl]-2H-chromen-2-ones 5a–h, via reactions of 2-(1-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)ethylidene) thiosemicarbazide (2) and the hydrazonoyl halides 3(4), was demonstrated. Also, a new series of 5-arylidene-2-(2-(1-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)thiazol-4(5H)-ones 10a–d were synthesized from reaction of 2 with chloroacetic acid and different aldehydes. Moreover, reaction of 2-cyano-N'-(1-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)ethylidene)-acetohydrazide (12) with substituted benzaldehydes gave the respective arylidene derivatives 13a–c under the conditions employed. The structures of the synthesized compounds were assigned based on elemental analyses and spectral data. Also, the cytototoxic activities of the thiazole derivative 5a was evaluated against HaCaT cells (human keratinocytes). It was found that compound 5a possess potent cytotoxic activity.

Abstract
We investigated the application of a high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source and a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometer to the metabolite profiling of a model small interfering RNA (siRNA) duplex TSR#34 and compared their functions and capabilities. TSR#34 duplex was incubated in human serum in vitro, and the duplex and its metabolites were then purified by ion exchange chromatography in order to remove the biological matrices. The fraction containing the siRNA duplex and its metabolites was collected and desalted and then subjected to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with a reversed phase column. The siRNA and its metabolites were separated into single strands by elevated chromatographic temperature and analyzed using the ESI-Orbitrap or the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer. Using this method, the 5' and/or 3' truncated metabolites of each strand were detected in the human serum samples. The ESI-Orbitrap mass spectrometer enabled differentiation between two possible RNA-based sequences, a monoisotopic molecular mass difference which was less than 2 Da, with an intrinsic mass resolving power. In-source decay (ISD) analysis using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer allowed the sequencing of the RNA metabolite with characteristic fragment ions, using 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone (2,4-DHAP) as a matrix. The ESI-Orbitrap mass spectrometer provided the highest mass accuracy and the benefit of on-line coupling with HPLC for metabolite profiling. Meanwhile, the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, in combination with 2,4-DHAP, has the potential for the sequencing of RNA by ISD analysis. The combined use of these methods will be beneficial to characterize the metabolites of therapeutic siRNA compounds.

Abstract
Three new acetophenone dimers or Acronychia-type acetophenones, acropyrone (1), acropyranol A (2), and acropyranol B (3), were isolated from the trunk bark of Acronychia pedunculata and structurally characterized, together with four known acetophenone dimers, acrovestone (4), acrovestenol (5), acrofolione A (6), and acrofolione B (7), the acetophenone monomer acronyline (8), and four furoquinoline alkaloids. The chemical structures of the new isolated compounds were elucidated unambiguously by spectroscopic data analysis. The cytotoxic activities of the isolated acetophenone dimers were evaluated against the DU145 prostate and A2058 melanoma human cancer cell lines as well as the NHDF normal cell line. Acrovestone (4) and acrovestenol (5) exhibited substantial cytotoxicity, with IC(50) values of 0.38 and 2.8 μM against A2058 melanoma cells as well as 0.93 and 2.7 μM against DU145 prostate cancer cells, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the secondary metabolites of the marine fungus Penicillium sp. FS60 from the South China Sea and their cytotoxicities. METHODS The compounds were isolated from the culture of strain FS60 by various chromatographic methods (silica gel, reverse silica gel, Sephadex-LH20, preparative TLC, HPLC and PTLC) and recrystallization. Their structures were identified by extensive analysis of their spectroscopic data. Compounds were tested for their cytotoxicities against SF-268, MCF-7, and NCI-H460 cell lines by SRB method. While, Compounds were tested for their antibacterial activities against S. aureus, E. coli and P. aeruginosa. RESULTS Seven compounds were isolated from the culture and identified as methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,5,6-trimethylbenzoate (1), 4-hydroxyacetophenone (2), 5-hydroxymethyl-furoic acid (3), isochromophilones VIII (4), ergosterol (5), ergosterol peroxide (6), and cerevisterol (7). CONCLUSION Compound 1 is isolated from the genus Penicillium for the first time. Compound 3 is demonstrated to have significant inhibition against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Compound 4 is demonstrated to have significant inhibition against the three cell lines.

Abstract
Four tetradentate (N(2)O(2)) and tridentate (NO(2)) Schiff base compounds (L1-L4) with propargyl moiety were prepared by the condensation of 1-[2-hydroxy-4-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)phenyl]ethanone with various aliphatic amines. The newly synthesized compounds (L1-L4) were characterized on the basis of the results of elemental analysis, thermal analysis, FT-IR, (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The different bands observed in the electronic spectra of the compounds in various organic solvents have been assigned to the proper electronic transitions. The hydrogen bonding and tautomeric equilibria in both of solution and the solid state are explained. The solvatochromism of the synthesized compounds in different solvents in the UV-visible spectra are discussed.

Abstract
Nine strains of marine-derived fungi (Aspergillus sydowii Ce15, A. sydowii Ce19, Aspergillus sclerotiorum CBMAI 849, Bionectria sp. Ce5, Beauveria felina CBMAI 738, Cladosporium cladosporioides CBMAI 857, Mucor racemosus CBMAI 847, Penicillium citrinum CBMAI 1186, and Penicillium miczynskii Gc5) were screened, catalyzing the asymmetric bioreduction of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanone 1 to its corresponding 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanol 2. A. sydowii Ce15 and Bionectria sp. Ce5 produced the enantiopure (R)-alcohol 2 (>99% ee) in accordance with the anti-Prelog rule and, the fungi B. felina CBMAI 738 (>99% ee) and P. citrinum CBMAI 1186 (69% ee) in accordance with the Prelog rule. Stereoselective bioreduction by whole cells of marine-derived fungi described by us is important for the production of new reductases from marine-derived fungi.
