Estimation of Chlorinated Pesticide Residues in Animal and Vegetable Oils

A procedure for the determination of chlorinated pesticide residues in cottonseed oil, hydrogenated marine oil, seal oil, butter oil, and processed beef tallow is described. The oil is spread in the form of a thin film over a large surface area provided by Celite 545. The pesticides are extracted from the oil-coated Celite with 80% aqueous acetonitrile, partitioned into Skellysolve F, and cleaned up on a basic alumina (activity III) column. Gas chromatography with an electron capture detector is used for qualitative and quantitative estimations. The average recovery of six commonly used chlorinated pesticides (aldrin, dieldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, and p,p'-DDT) at levels of 0.1 and 0.25 ppm ranged from 82 to 106%.

AN INTERACTION EFFECT OF NITROGEN STORAGE WITH SPECIFIC STRAINS IN THE HATCHABILITY OF TURKEY EGGS

Fertile turkey eggs, totalling 592 from two small strains over three bi-weekly hatch-storage periods in trial 1 and 666 from three large strains over one biweekly hatch-storage period in trial 2, were subdivided into two approximately equal groups and each group was subjected to either refrigerated storage or refrigerated storage plus nitrogen gas in a closed environment. Results indicated that the hatchability of eggs of specific strains was enhanced by storage in nitrogen gas. The enhancement in hatchability did not appear to be consistently related to the level of hatchability in a specific strain. The effect of nitrogen treatment in preserving embryonic viability was better in the second than in the first week of storage in one trial only. The interaction of nitrogen treatment with hatches in trial 1 suggested that the effect of nitrogen treatment may be most pronounced when other environmental factors deter embryonic viability.

KINETIC ASPECTS OF THE COPOLYMERIZATION OF TETRAHYDROFURAN WITH PROPYLENE OXIDE. I

Tetrahydrofuran and propylene oxide were copolymerized in the presence of the catalyst boron fluoride ethyl ether, and various co-catalysts, such as 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, and 1,4-butanediol. Ethylene chloride was used as a solvent and as an internal reference for analytical purposes. Reactions were carried out at 0 °C and at atmospheric pressure. Monomer concentrations were determined by vapor phase chromatography, and copolymer molecular structure analyses were carried out by physical and chemical methods including infrared spectroscopy, vapor pressure osmometry, hydroxyl end-group analysis, and chemical reduction of unsaturated linkages.The homopolymerization of tetrahydrofuran did not take place, whereas that of propylene oxide proceeded at a rapid rate. In the copolymerization of tetrahydrofuran with propylene oxide, the rate of disappearance of tetrahydrofuran was found to be independent of its concentration, but varied directly with the concentration of propylene oxide. Under similar conditions, the rate of disappearance of propylene oxide was found to be (a) proportional to the square of its concentration, and (b) inversely proportional to the concentration of tetrahydrofuran.Reactivity ratios varied between 1.3 and 1.8 for propylene oxide and between 0.1 and 0.6 for tetrahydrofuran. Molecular weights obtained by vapor pressure osmometry ranged between 460 and 740, and those obtained by hydroxyl end-group analysis ranged between 520 and 1 660. Infrared spectra confirmed the presence of hydroxyl groups and ether linkages in the copolymers prepared. Results on terminal unsaturation were negative.

Thiopental anesthesia and tannic acid diagnostic enemas

The administration to albino rats of tannic acid as a retention enema (in doses of 0.2 g./kg. body weight and over) prolonged the duration of anesthesia induced by thiopental given immediately before, or 72 hours after, the tannic acid. This dose of tannic acid corresponds, on the basis of body weight, to a radiodiagnostic enema of 2 1. of 0.25% tannic acid in barium sulfate suspension given to a child weighing 25 kg. By excluding certain hypothermic effects of tannic acid, it was concluded that thiopental potentiation was probably due to impairment by the tannic acid of the liver's ability to detoxify the barbiturate. The results suggest that a drug which is detoxified in the liver should be administered three to five days after a tannic acid-barium sulfate radiodiagnostic enema only with considerable caution.
