Abstract
Phosphate removal from aqueous solution was explored using granular ferric hydroxide (GFH) as an inorganic adsorbent. Adsorption, desorption and kinetic studies were conducted on laboratory scale to evaluate the performance of GFH as an adsorbent for low concentrations of phosphate solution. The effect of pH on adsorption was investigated, and phosphate uptake was shown to decrease with an increase in solution pH, with maximum removal seen to occur at pH 3. The experimental data best fit the Temkin isotherm at both pH 3 and 4. Uptake of phosphate by GFH follows second-order kinetics, with the small particle range (76-200 microm) removing phosphate from the solution more rapidly than the larger particle range (710-850 microm). The kinetic results suggest that intra-particle diffusion is an important factor in phosphate adsorption onto GFH. Thermodynamic parameters (DeltaG degrees, DeltaH degrees, DeltaS degrees) were evaluated, and the results indicated that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. This study demonstrates that GFH has potential to be used as a cost-effective adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution.

Abstract
Early coital debut is a significant predictor of HIV infection. A cross-sectional, observational study of HIV/AIDS patients attending the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine (CSTM), Kollata, carried out for a period of six months from May to October 2006; found that 32.2% of patients had sexual initiation before 19 years. The mean age of coital debut was 22.47 years for males and 18.62 years for females. 62.3% women had experienced sexual intercourse before 19 years. The first sexual partner was the spouse in ''91.8% females and 42.9% males. Coital debut at younger ages was significantly higher among female patients less than 35 years of age, those educated less than middle school, staying in rural areas, not belonging to Hindu religion and not having commercial sex at time of sexual initiation.

Abstract
Summary
N-octanoyl-N-phenylhydroxamic acid (OHA) has been prepared by partial reduction of nitrobenzene with Zn dust/NH4Cl, followed by acylation with n-octanoyl chloride. Structure of OHA was confirmed by 1H NMR, IR spectra and CHNS microanalysis. The extraction of uranium by OHA has been studied as a function of pH, temperature and concentration of OHA. The extraction of uranium was found to increase with increase in pH. Uranium forms a 1:2 complex with OHA. IR Spectra & NMR Spectra of the uranium-OHA complex and slope analysis obtained from extraction studies indicated that the extraction of uranium was due to the formation of a chelate. The enthalpy change accompanied by the extraction of uranium by OHA has been obtained by temperature variation method. The extraction process was found to be endothermic at pH 2 and exothermic at pH 6.

Abstract
Tumour regression requires activation of T cells. It has been shown that the interaction between T cell-expressed CD40-ligand (CD40-L) and antigen-presenting cell-expressed CD40 plays a crucial role in T cell activation. CD40-L- or CD40-deficient mice are susceptible to tumour growth. CD40-based therapies are also shown to control tumour growth significantly, suggesting that CD40-CD40-L interaction induces anti-tumour T cell responses and tumour regression. We demonstrate that the anti-tumour T cell response can be modulated reciprocally as a function of the levels of CD40 expression. At low expression levels, CD40 promotes tumour growth; at higher expression levels, CD40 induces tumour-regressing T cell response. Dendritic cells (DC) sorted onto major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-II expression are found to be similar in CD40 and CD80 expression. The MHC-II(hi)/CD40(hi) DC induce interleukin (IL)-12-dominated and T helper 1 (Th1)-type response, whereas MHC-II(lo)/CD40(lo) DC promote high IL-10 and Th2-type T cells. The T cells induced by these DC also differ in terms of regulatory T cell markers, lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3) and glucocorticoid-induced tumour necrosis factor (TNF) receptor family-related gene (GITR). Thus, we report for the first time that CD40-induced effector T cell response depends on CD40 expression levels in vivo.
