Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of particle size reduction (20, 1, 0.15, and 0.075 mm) on biogas production from rice straw waste through batch anaerobic digestion experiments. To clarify the digestion mechanisms, the microbial community and rice straw properties including fractal dimension, dissolution abilities and the bio-liquefaction degree were determined. Particle size reduction of rice straw improved methane yield from 107 mL g-1 VS to 197 mL g-1 VS. The elevated digestion efficiency was attributed to the cellulose degradation (degradation rate from 27% to 93%) rather than hemicellulose or lignin. The comminution pretreatment improved the basic morphology, dissolution abilities and bio-liquefaction degree, which associated with the shifts in the bacterial community and the decreased bacterial diversity. These results suggested that particle size reduction of the rice straw in conjunction with optimized microbial growth could improve the methane yield in anaerobic digestion processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescent-to-parent psychological aggression is often a precursor to physical aggression toward their parents. Recently, there have been 4 high-profile matricide cases that happened in China. To date, there is limited research in Confucian filial piety culture on child-to-parent psychological aggression, especially toward the mother who is overwhelming the target of children's aggression. OBJECTIVE The goal of this study is to explore the prevalence of adolescent-to-mother psychological aggression and examine the role of father violence and maternal parenting style in contributing to these behaviors in Confucian filial piety culture. METHODS Participants were 1134 students from 7 to 12 grade (M = 14 years, SD = 1.5) in Qingdao located in Shandong Province in east side of China where the Confucian Culture began. The instruments used were a demographics questionnaire, adolescent-to-mother psychological aggression questionnaire, father's violent behavior questionnaire and maternal parenting style questionnaire. RESULTS Two types of adolescent-to-mother psychological aggression were assessed: contempt and rebellion. The prevalence of adolescent-to-mother contempt and rebellion was 30.7% and 18.7%, respectively. Results from multiple regression analyses indicated that father's conflict with grandparents, maternal control and over-protection were positively associated with adolescent's contempt for mother. Parents divorced, father's conflict with grandparents, father-to-mother physical violence and maternal rejection were positively associated with adolescent's rebellion against mother. Maternal emotional warmth was negatively associated with adolescent's contempt and rebellion against mother. CONCLUSION Adolescent-to-mother psychological aggression occurs within a broader family context of violence and disharmony. Observational learning of father's conflict with grandparents or violent behaviors toward mother maybe the mechanism of violence passing from generations. However, maternal emotional warmth buffered the negative association between father's conflict with grandparents and adolescent's contempt for mother. But maternal control and over-protection exacerbated the positive relationships between father's conflict with grandparents and adolescent's contempt for mother.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects and mechanisms of dexmedetomidine (Dex) on model rats of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Methods Rats were divided into NC, model, Dex-L (1μg/ kg), Dex-M (5μg/kg) and Dex-H (10μg/kg) groups. Rats in all groups except in the NC group were injected with streptozotocin (STZ) combined with right nephrectomy. Rats in Dex (1, 5 and 10μg/kg) groups received gavage with Dex (1, 5 and 10μg/kg). After 4 weeks, rats were sacrificed and kidneys were collected. HE staining was performed for a renal injury. Masson staining was applied to detect the fibrotic accumulation in rat kidney. Radioimmunoassay was used to test the renal function. Immunohistochemical method was used to detect protein expressions of RhoA, p-MYPT and Nox4 in rat kidney. Results Compared with the NC group, the levels of urine microalbumin in protein, α1-MG and β2-MG, renal fibrotic accumulation, RhoA, p-MYPT, Nox4 and α-SMA in model group increased significantly (P<0.001, respectively). Compared with the model group, Dex low, medium and high groups improved the deposition of renal fiber in rats, inhibited the expression levels of microalbumin, α1-MG and β2-MG in urine and decreased expression of RhoA, p-MYPT, Nox4 and α-SMA proteins (P<0.05, P<0.01). Conclusion Dex is possible to inhibit the expression of α-SMA and renal fibrous substance deposition in rat kidney via RhoA/ROCK/Nox4 signaling pathway, thereby reducing early kidney damage in model rats.

Abstract
Isothiocyanates are a group of compounds that exist in the majority of cruciferous plants. A number of isothiocyanates have been demonstrated to exhibit anticancer effects; however, antitumor properties of propyl isothiocyanate (PITC) have not been evaluated previously. In this study, the possible effects of PITC on gastric cancer (GC) cells were investigated, and the potential underlying mechanisms were explored. The results demonstrated that PITC inhibited cell viability of two GC cell lines and induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Treatment with PITC promoted total glutathione depletion in GC cell lines, leading to reactive oxygen species accumulation and DNA damage, which activated the mitochondria-dependent and p53 signaling pathways to trigger apoptosis in GC cells. The effects of PITC were reversed by N-Acetyl-L-cysteine. The results of the present study revealed the potential mechanisms of PITC on apoptosis induction in GC cells, which may be mediated by mitochondria-dependent apoptosis and DNA damage.

Abstract
Erythromycin mycelial dreg (EMD) resulting from erythromycin (ERY) production process may be used as a nutrient resource. However, it has a high moisture content, which makes handling operations complicated. In this study, the EMD dewaterability under heat-activated persulfate (PS) oxidation conditioning was investigated. The variations of physical and chemical properties of EMD were further investigated to uncover the underlying mechanism of EMD dewaterability. Results indicated that EMD dewaterability was worse under single heat process, but significantly improved under heat-activated PS oxidation process. Heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning was capable to increase zeta potential, reduce median particle size, alter EMD flocs morphology, and disrupt mycelial cells. Concurrently, heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning resulted in the decrease of protein in tightly bound (TB) extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and total EPS, and the decrease of fluorescing constituents (tryptophan protein, tyrosine protein and tryptophan amino acid) in EPS. Furthermore, a possible mechanism was proposed for heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the reasons for failure of Meek micro-skin grafting in children with severe burns and to observe the clinical effects of the treatment measures. Methods: Thirty children with severe burns hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University (hereinafter referred to as the author's affiliation) from January 2012 to January 2018, conforming to the inclusion criteria were included to failed skin graft group. Children in failed skin graft group were performed with Meek micro-skin grafting operation and the operation failed, including 17 males and 13 females aged 1 to 12 year(s). Thirty children with severe burns hospitalized in the author's affiliation during the same period of time, conforming to the inclusion criteria, were included to successful skin graft group. Children in successful skin graft group were performed with Meek micro-skin grafting operation and the operation succeeded, including 16 males and 14 females aged 1 to 12 year(s). Main treatment measures and effects before operation, area and survival rate of Meek micro-skin graft, infected pathogens status, selection status of sensitive antibiotics, preoperative nutrition status, and wound infection status in plum rain season of children in the two groups, and nutritional status before and after strengthening nutritional support of postoperative surviving children in failed skin graft group were analyzed retrospectively. Data were processed with chi-square test and t test. Results: (1) The numbers of children in the two groups performed with main treatment measures of dilatation and anti-shock, tracheotomy intubation, ventilator-assisted respiration, and limb incision decompression after admission were close (χ(2)=0, 0.016, 0.025, 0.009, P>0.05). After taking the above-mentioned main treatment measures, effects of correcting shock, preventing asphyxia, correcting breathing difficulty, and improving peripheral circulation of limb were achieved. (2) The area of Meek micro-skin grafting of children in successful skin graft group was (20.6±2.5)% total body surface area (TBSA), close to (21.2±2.2)% TBSA in failed skin graft group (t=0.534, P>0.05). The survival rate of Meek micro-skin graft of children in successful skin graft group was (79±5)%, significantly higher than (26±3)% in failed skin graft group (t=2.956, P<0.01). (3) The microbial culture of wound secretion of 5 (16.67%) children in 30 patients in successful skin graft group was positive, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa of 2 children, and Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Aspergillus of one patient respectively. As children in successful skin graft group were with no symptom of systemic infection, no blood microbial culture was done. The microbial culture of wound secretion of 30 (100.00%) children in 30 patients in failed skin graft group was positive, and blood microbial culture of 8 (26.67%) children was positive. The main pathogen was Pseudomonas aeruginosa of 11 (36.67%) children in 8 pathogens caused infection with gram-negative bacteria of 22 (73.33%), gram-positive bacteria of 11 (36.67%) children, and fungi of 6 (20.00%) children. (4) Ten kinds of sensitive antibiotics such as cephalosporins, glycopeptides, carbapenems, and tetracyclines antibiotics were used in children in failed skin graft group, of which the use rate of imipenem of 9 (30.00%) was the highest. Only 4 kinds of sensitive antibiotics such as ceftazidime were used in 30 children in successful skin graft group. (5) The preoperative levels of albumin and prealbumin of children in successful skin graft group were (32±4) g/L and (133±41) mg/L respectively, significantly higher than (27±4) g/L and (93±35) mg/L in failed skin graft group (t=5.090, 4.064, P<0.01). The albumin and prealbumin levels of postoperative surviving children in failed skin graft group after nutritional support treatment were (35±4) g/L and (168±49) mg/L, significantly higher than (27±4) g/L and (94±38) mg/L before nutritional support treatment (t=6.911, 6.315, P<0.01). (6) Wound infection of 9 children in 30 children with wound infection in failed skin graft group happened in the plum rain season, and fungi infection of 3 children in 6 children with fungi infection happened in the plum rain season. Wound infection of 2 children in 5 children with wound infection in successful skin graft group happened in the plum rain season, and the only one children with fungi infection happened in the plum rain season. Conclusions: The main reasons for the failure of Meek micro-skin grafting in children with severe burns include infection, nutrition, and season factors, etc. Measures of strengthening wound dressing change, reasonable use of sensitive antibiotics to control infection, internal and external intestinal nutritional support, and reducing disturbance of the plum rain season by enhancing ventilation are effective and worthy of clinical promotion.

Abstract
In wave physics and engineering, directional emission sets a fundamental limitation on conventional simple sources as their sizes should be sufficiently larger than their wavelength. Artificial metamaterial and animal biosonar both show potential in overcoming this limitation. Existing metamaterials arranged in periodic microstructures face great challenges in realizing complex and multiphase biosonar structures. Here, we proposed a physical directional emission model to bridge the gap between porpoises' biosonar and artificial metamaterial. Inspired by the anatomical and physical properties of the porpoise's biosonar transmission system, we fabricated a hybrid metamaterial system composed of multiple composite structures. We validated that the hybrid metamaterial significantly increased directivity and main lobe energy over a broad bandwidth both numerically and experimentally. The device displayed efficiency in detecting underwater target and suppressing false target jamming. The metamaterial-based physical model may be helpful to achieve the physical mechanisms of porpoise biosonar detection and has diverse applications in underwater acoustic sensing, ultrasound scanning, and medical ultrasonography.

Abstract
A colorful surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) sensor with the hue-based enhanced sensitivity has been developed by using sputtered AuAg alloy thin film as the sensing layer. The condition for optimizing the hue-based sensitivity of the SPRi sensor was achieved, that is, the initial resonance wavelength is in the range from 595 to 610 nm. Under this condition, the hue-based refractive index sensitivity of the SPRi sensor was measured as high as Δhue/Δnc=29879/RIU. This sensitivity is 8 times higher than that obtained with a gold-layer SPRi sensor (Δhue/Δnc=3658/RIU) and 7.7 times as high in magnitude as the spectral sensitivity of the same sensor (ΔλR/Δnc=3897.6 nm/RIU). After functionalization of the AuAg alloy film with the monoclonal antibody, the sensor was used for quantitative immunodetection of highly carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in water. According to the experimental results, the average hue of the SPR color image (300 pixels×300 pixels) experiences an initial rapid increase and then stabilizes 15 min after exposure of the functionalized AuAg alloy film to an aqueous BaP solution sample. The variation of average hue obtained at the equilibrium of surface immunoreaction is a linear function of BaP concentration with the slope being Δhue/Δc=132.2/(μg·L-1). A cooled CCD camera is able to distinguish a change of Δhue=1, offering the colorful SPRi sensor the BaP detection limit of 0.01 μg·L-1. The comparative measurements of the sensor's responses indicate that the hue variation obtained with 0.1 μg·L-1 of BaP is equal to that obtained either with 5 μg·L-1 of benzanthracene or with 5 μg·L-1 of benzofluoranthene, revealing the sensor's excellent specificity to BaP. The work demonstrated that the AuAg alloy film-based colorful SPRi sensor can be used not only for visualized analysis of molecular interaction at the surface but also for quantitative trace detection of small-molecule analytes.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disorder, which involves articular cartilage degeneration as well as joint inflammatory reactions. The recent studies have identified microRNA (miRNA) as one of the epigenetic mechanisms for the regulation of gene expression. Here we aim to reveal the role of miRNA in the regulation of gene expression in articular chondrocytes and its significance in the OA pathogenesis. In the present study, miRNA profiling was performed using OA cartilage and normal healthy cartilage tissues. As compared to their levels in normal cells and tissues, miR-27a expression was found to be upregulated in OA cartilage and IL-1β-treated articular chondrocytes. TUNEL staining, as well as flow cytometry with Annexin V-FITC/PI double labeling indicated that miR-27a inhibition reduced the apoptosis of IL-1β-treated articular chondrocytes. Bioinformatics prediction and the dual-luciferase reporter assay indicated that miR-27a targeted the 3'-UTR of the PI3K gene to silence it. The PI3K mRNA level in OA cartilage and IL-1β-treated articular chondrocytes was also downregulated, comparing with normal cells and tissues. Transfection of chondrocytes transfected with the miR-27a inhibitor upregulated the PI3K expression. This study demonstrated miR-27a is a regulator of the PI3K-Akt-mTOR axis in human chondrocytes and could participate in OA pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies suggested that thyroid function in the first trimester of gestation played an important role in fetal growth. However, limited clinical data are available to support this relationship in the second trimester of gestation. OBJECTIVE We examined the relationship of maternal thyroid function parameters in early second trimester of gestation with birth outcomes in China. METHODS Participating 5016 mother-infant pairs were recruited from the Songjiang District Maternity and Infant Hospital, Shanghai, China, between July and December 2016. Linear regression assessed the associations of thyroid hormones with birthweight. Logistic regression tested the correlations between thyroid hormones and low birthweight, macrosomia, small for gestational age , and large for gestational age infants. Maternal serum TSH, TT3, TT4, FT3, and FT4 concentrations were measured in 16-20 weeks of gestation. RESULTS TT3 and FT3 were positively associated with birthweight, while TT4 and FT4 were negatively associated with birthweight, respectively. Furthermore, higher TT3 and FT3 were associated with increased risks of LGA infants (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.15-1.9; OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.01-1.46), respectively. Higher TT3 was associated with an increased risk of macrosomic infants (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.04-1.74). In contrast, higher FT4 was associated with decreased risks of LGA (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.81-0.93) and macrosomic infants (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.84-0.96), respectively. No associations were found between TSH and any of the outcomes. CONCLUSIONS TT3 and FT3 were positively associated with fetal growth, while TT4 and FT4 were negatively associated with fetal growth. Our findings suggested that thyroid function in early second trimester of gestation is a potential risk factor for abnormal fetal growth.

Abstract
There is great interest in microbial conversion of methane, an abundant resource, into valuable liquid chemicals. While aerobic bioconversion of methane to liquid chemicals has been reported, studies of anaerobic methane bioconversion to liquid chemicals are rare. Here we show that a microbial culture dominated by Candidatus 'Methanoperedens nitroreducens', an anaerobic methanotrophic archaeon, anaerobically oxidizes methane to produce acetate, indirectly via reaction intermediate(s), when nitrate or nitrite is supplied as an electron acceptor under a rate-limiting condition. Isotopic labeling tests showed that acetate was produced from certain intracellular storage compounds that originated from methane. Fluorescence in situ hybridization and Nile red staining demonstrated that polyhydroxyalkanoate in M. nitroreducens was likely one of the intracellular storage compounds for acetate production, along with glycogen. Acetate is a common substrate for the production of more valuable chemicals. The microbial conversion discovered in this study potentially enables a new approach to the use of methane as a feedstock for the chemical market.

Abstract
This meta-analysis aimed to clarify the actual association between the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5-Is) use and the risk of melanoma in erectile dysfunction (ED) patients. A systematic literature search was conducted in online databases in October, 2016 to identify studies focusing on the association between PDE5-Is use and the risk of melanoma. Summarized multivariate adjusted risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess the strength of associations. A total of six clinical trials containing more than one million participants were included. ED patients using PDE5-Is shared a significant high risk of melanoma (RR=1.12, 95% CI=1.03-1.21, p=0.006). Positive associations were observed in all kinds of prescriptions: single prescription (RR=1.20, 95% CI=1.06-1.35, p=0.003), medium number of prescription (RR=1.15, 95% CI=1.01-1.30, p=0.03), and high number of prescription (RR=1.18, 95% CI=1.05-1.34, P=0.006). Additionally, PDE5-Is were also found to be significantly associated with increased risk of basal cell carcinoma (RR=1.14, 95% CI=1.09-1.19, p<0.00001). Our study indicates that PDE5-Is use could significantly increase the risk of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma. However, the risk of melanoma did not rise significantly with the increased number of prescriptions. Consequently, owing to the lack of information about other potential synergistic factors, it is difficult for us to make a solid conclusion that application of PDE5-Is is the direct cause of increased risk of melanoma. Their relationship needs to be validated by further evidences.

Abstract
Biochar was recently identified as an effective soil amendment for CH4 capture. Corresponding mechanisms are currently recognized to be from physical properties of biochar, providing a favorable growth environment for aerobic methanotrophs which perform aerobic methane (CH4) oxidation. However, our study shows that the chemical reactivity of biochar can also stimulate anaerobic oxidation of CH4 (AOM) by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) of ANME-2d, which proposes another plausible mechanism for CH4 mitigation by biochar amendment in anaerobic environments. It was found that, by adding biochar as the sole electron acceptor in an anaerobic environment, CH4 was biologically oxidized, with CO2 production of 106.3 ± 5.1 μmol g-1 biochar. In contrast, limited CO2 production was observed with chemically reduced biochar amendment. This biological nature of the process was confirmed by mcr gene transcript abundance as well as sustained dominance of ANME-2d in the microbial community during microbial incubations with active biochar amendment. Combined FTIR and XPS analyses demonstrated that the redox activity of biochar is related to its oxygen-based functional groups. On the basis of microbial community evolution as well as intermediate production during incubation, different pathways in terms of direct or indirect interactions between ANME-2d and biochar were proposed for biochar-mediated AOM.

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was undertaken to better understand the husbandry, management and biosecurity practices of pig farms in Guangdong Province (GD), China to identify risk factors for farmer reported swine influenza (SI) on their farms. Questionnaires were administered to 153 owners/managers of piggeries (average of 7 from each of the 21 prefectures in GD). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for farmer reported SI in piggeries during the six months preceding the questionnaire administration. The ability of wild birds to enter piggeries (OR 2.50, 95% CI: 1.01-6.16), the presence of poultry on a pig-farm (OR 3.24, 95% CI: 1.52-6.94) and no biosecurity measures applied to workers before entry to the piggery (OR 2.65, 95% CI: 1.04-6.78) were found to increase the likelihood of SI being reported by farmers in a multivariable logistic regression model. The findings of this study highlight the importance of understanding the local pig industry and the practices adopted when developing control measures to reduce the risk of SI to pig farms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) have a poor prognosis. BTCs are characterized by a prominent desmoplastic reaction which possibly contributes to the aggressive phenotype of this tumor. The desmoplastic reaction includes excessive production and deposition of extracellular matrix proteins such as periostin, secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), thrombospondin-1, as well as accumulation of α-smooth muscle actin-positive cancer-associated fibroblasts and immune cells, secreting growth factors and cytokines including transforming growth factor (TGF)-β. In the present study, we investigated the expression of SPARC in BTC as well as its possible regulation by TGF-β. METHODS Expression levels of Sparc, TGF-β1 and its receptor ALK5 were evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR in 6 biliary tract cell lines as well as 1 immortalized cholangiocyte cell line (MMNK-1). RNAs from tumor samples of 7 biliary tract cancer patients were analyzed for expression of Sparc, TGF-β type II receptor (TbRII) as well as Twist and ZO-1. MMNK-1 cells were stimulated with TGF-β for 24 h, and Sparc, ZO-1 and E-Cadherin expressions were determined. The presence of SPARC protein was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in tumor specimens from 10 patients. RESULTS When comparing basal Sparc transcript levels in diverse BTC cell lines to MMNK-1 cells, we found that it was strongly downregulated in all cancer cell lines. The remaining expression levels were higher in highly differentiated cell lines (CCSW1, MZChA1, MZChA2 and TFK-1) than in less differentiated and undifferentiated ones (BDC, SKChA1). Expression of Sparc in BTC patient samples showed a significant positive correlation with expression of the epithelial marker ZO-1. In contrast, the mesenchymal marker Twist and the TbRII showed a trend of negative correlation with expression of Sparc in these samples. TGF-β exposure significantly downregulated Sparc expression in MMNK-1 cholangiocytes in vitro in parallel to downregulation of epithelial markers (E-Cadherin and ZO-1). Finally, SPARC immunostaining was performed in 10 patient samples, and the correlation between absence of SPARC and survival times was analyzed. CONCLUSIONS These data imply that a decrease in SPARC expression is correlated with dedifferentiation of BTC cells resulting in enhanced EMT being possibly mediated by TGF-β. Thereby SPARC levels might be a marker for individual prognosis of a patient, and strategies aiming at inhibition of SPARC downregulation might have potential for new future therapies.

Abstract
In this study, fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs - lmrA, lmrB, ermB, lnuA, lnuB and vgaC) and species distribution of heavy metals during lincomycin mycelial residues hydrothermal treatment (HT) process were investigated. The results showed that HT could reduce both ARGs and mobile genetic elements effectively by 1.02 to 4.14 logs. Total bacterial biomass reflecting by 16S rRNA decreased from 1.27 × 109 to 4.47 × 105 copies g-1 dry weight. Moreover, half-lives of these targets varied from 2.4 min (ermB) to 8.9 min (lmrB) in the first 30 min of treatment based on a biphasic first-order kinetic model. After the first 30 min, however, half-lives ranged between 15.4 min (lmrA) and 247.6 min (ISCR1). Complexation and precipitation resulted in the transformation of heavy metals from weakly bounded to relatively stable fraction in HT process. Simultaneously, their environmental risk level decreased by at least one grade.

Abstract
Narrowband ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors are highly desired in multiple areas. Photodetectors based on organic-inorganic nanocomposites offer high sensitivity, widely adjustable response range, light weight, and low-temperature solution processibility. However, the broad absorption range of organic and inorganic semiconductor materials makes it difficult to achieve a narrowband detection feature for nanocomposite photodetectors. In this work, nanocomposite thin films containing the wide band gap conjugated polymer poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)- alt- co-(bithiophene)] (F8T2) blended with wide band gap ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) serve as the active layers of the photodetectors. Narrowband UV photodetectors with high gain and low driving voltage are demonstrated by adopting a symmetric device structure, controlling the active layer composition and microstructure, and manipulating the light penetration depth in the active layer. The fabricated photodetector exhibits a high external quantum efficiency of 782% at 358 nm under a low forward bias of 3 V with the full-width at half-maximum of 16 nm. Combined with a low dark current, a high specific detectivity of 8.45 × 1012 Jones is achieved. The impacts of the F8T2:ZnO NPs weight ratio and the device structure on the UV-selectivity and the device performance are investigated and discussed. Our method offers a pathway to design and fabricate narrowband UV photodetectors.

Abstract
Complete nitrogen removal has recently been demonstrated by integrating anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) processes. In this work, the effect of methane partial pressure on the performance of a membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) consisting of DAMO and anammox microorganisms was evaluated. The activities of DAMO archaea and DAMO bacteria in the biofilm increased significantly with increased methane partial pressure, from 367 ± 9 and 58 ± 22 mg-N L-1d-1 to 580 ± 12 and 222 ± 22 mg-N L-1d-1, respectively, while the activity of anammox bacteria only increased slightly, when the methane partial pressure was elevated from 0.24 to 1.39 atm in the short-term batch tests. The results were supported by a long-term (seven weeks) continuous test, when the methane partial pressure was dropped from 1.39 to 0.78 atm. The methane utilization efficiency was always above 96% during both short-term and long-term tests. Taken together, nitrogen removal rate (especially the nitrate reduction rate by DAMO archaea) and methane utilization efficiency could be maintained at high levels in a broad range of methane partial pressure (0.24-1.39 atm in this study). In addition, a previously established DAMO/anammox biofilm model was used to analyze the experimental data. The observed impacts of methane partial pressure on biofilm activity were well explained by the modeling results. These results suggest that methane partial pressure can potentially be used as a manipulated variable to control reaction rates, ultimately to maintain high nitrogen removal efficiency, according to nitrogen loading rate.
