Abstract
We report an unusually large birefringence modulation in fiber-optic phase modulators formed with cylindrical piezoelectric transducers when driven at a few hundred kilohertz. The magnitude of the birefringence modulation is a strong function of modulation frequency. A simple model is used to explain the phenomenon, and the theoretical predictions agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract
Various benign and malignant conditions can cause biliary obstruction. We present a rare case of obstructive jaundice due to the compression of the common hepatic duct by the anteriorly overriding right hepatic artery. This case was also associated with the absence of the lateral segment of the left hepatic lobe. The patient was a 39 year-old housewife with a 4-day history of jaundice and occasional febrile sensation. An abdominal computed tomography showed absence of the lateral segment of the left hepatic lobe and a percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography showed a band-like filling defect of 2 mm width at the level of the upper common hepatic duct. The anteriorly overriding right hepatic artery compressing the common hepatic duct and the absence of the lateral segment of the left hepatic lobe were confirmed by operation.

Abstract
We examined the serological relationships among 32 hantavirus isolates collected from numerous geographic regions and hosts. We prepared rat immune sera to each virus and used these sera in hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) tests, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), and plaque-reduction neutralization tests to establish the antigenic relationships among the isolates. Our studies included viruses that had been partially characterized previously, as well as isolates for which little or no serological data were available. Our results indicate that, in addition to the four established serological groups of hantaviruses, represented by Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala, and Prospect Hill viruses, there exist at least two other distinct groups of hantaviruses. These groups are represented by Thailand 749 virus, an isolate from Bandicota in Thailand, and by Thottapalayam virus, an isolate from Suncus in India. To compare more closely the antigenic relationships of the isolates to prototype Hantaan virus, we examined the reactivities of Hantaan G1- or G2-specific monoclonal antibodies with the envelope proteins of a number of the isolates. We found that several epitopes defined by monoclonal antibodies to the G2 protein were highly conserved as detected by HAI tests and ELISA. Almost all of the isolates could be neutralized by at least one G2-specific monoclonal antibody. In contrast, epitopes defined by G1 monoclonal antibodies were conserved only among Hantaan-like viruses.

Abstract
The hantavirus genus, belonging to the bunyaviridae family, is comprised of at least four serologically distinct types: Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala and Prospect Hill. Previously, we reported the use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for grouping hantavirus isolates by using four sets of primers specific to each serotype. Our PCR typing results agreed with those of serological typing. The present study makes use of thermal cycle sequencing to sequence PCR-amplified DNA products in order to determine the level of similarity among members of the same serotype. We show that members of Hantaan and Seoul serotypes are over 92% homologous, irrespective of their host and geographical origin. Puumala sequences show a degree of homology ranging from 80 to 98%. Despite the variation in sequence at the nucleotide level, amino acids show an even higher level of conservation.

Abstract
Results of 54 sonographic examinations of patients referred for suspected or known small intestinal obstruction were retrospectively correlated with surgical findings, and the diagnostic value of sonography regarding presence, level, and cause of obstruction was compared with that of plain abdominal radiography. The diagnosis of obstruction was correct in 89% of cases with sonography and in 71% with plain radiography. The level of obstruction was correctly predicted in 76% of cases with sonography and in 51% with plain radiography. The cause of obstruction was correctly predicted in 20% of cases with sonography and in 2% with plain radiography. The authors conclude that use of sonography in evaluating patients with bowel obstruction may be helpful in confirmation of the presence of obstruction, in determination of the level of obstruction, and in identification of the cause of obstruction.

Abstract
1. A. proteinaceous inhibitor for S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet)-dependent transmethylation reactions has been purified to apparent homogeneity from rat liver cytosolic fraction. 2. The peptide was made up of 29 amino acid residues with a molecular weight of 2,584. Glycine accounted for 52% of the total amino acids. 3. Employing AdoMet: protein-carboxyl O-methyltransferase (Protein methylase II) and bovine serum gamma-globulin as in vitro substrate, the mode of inhibition was found to be non-competitive with Ki value of 1.9 x 10(-8) M. 4. When the inhibitor was present in the reaction mixture together with S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine (AdoHcy), which is a competitive inhibitor for AdoMet, the extent of inhibition exceeded that exerted by each individual inhibitor alone, suggesting that the sites of the inhibitors on the enzyme molecule are different. 5. Almost a stoichiometric relationship exists between the enzyme and the inhibitor molecule, the ratio being approx one.

Abstract
Class I regulatory complex (CRC) located in the 5'-upstream region of MHC class I gene contains transcriptional enhancing sequences, called Enh A. This Enh A region contains tandem-arranged kappa B-like sites, one of which has a well-conserved perfect palindromic sequence. The second kappa B-like site, juxtaposed to the perfect palindrome, contains an imperfect palindromic sequence. In B-cell nuclear extracts, we have identified at least four sequence-specific protein complexes; three shared the repeated kappa B enhancer as their binding motifs. The perfect palindromic sequence facilities the binding of a complex termed BI, while the imperfect palindrome provides the binding sites for two other complexes, BII and BIII. The BII and BIII complexes exhibited binding crossreactivity with other kappa B-related motifs and recognized both the perfect and imperfect palindromic sequences, whereas the BI complex was specific for the perfect palindromic sequence which is unique to the class I promoters. A DNA segment outside the repeated kappa B enhancers probably binds the fourth complex, BIV. These complexes, except for the perfect palindrome-binding complex, differ from those described for the murine class I promoter. The binding characteristics of these factors suggest that the mechanism controlling the class I transcription may be quite complex.

Abstract
To determine the current prevalence of antibody to arboviruses, rickettsiae, and hantaan-like viruses, a survey was carried out in the Nile River Valley of Egypt, one of the principal foci of the 1977-1978 Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak. Blood specimens were obtained from 915 persons representing 190 study households. Enzyme immunoassay testing showed that the overall prevalence of IgG antibody was 4% to sand fly fever Sicilian (SFS), 2% to sandfly fever Naples (SFN), 15% to RVF, 20% to West Nile, and 4% to Hantaan (HTN) viruses. Antibody was demonstrated among 32% of the same study subjects to Coxiella burnetii, 58% to Rickettsia typhi, and 32% to R. conorii. The prevalence of agent-specific antibody tended to increase with age. Particularly notable was the low prevalence of RVF infection in children born after the height of the RVF outbreak. No detectable antibodies were found in the population less than seven years of age and in only 3% of those 7-12 years old. In contrast, 26% of the study population 13-19 years old, who were young children and infants at the time of the outbreak, were found to have RVF antibodies, suggesting that the level of intensity associated with transmission decreased considerably following the documented 1977-1978 outbreak. Geometric mean titers (GMT) ranged from 139 for C. burnetii to 1,305 for RVF, and did not vary significantly by age, except for high titers for RVF in the 20-49-year-old age group. A significant upward trend in GMT was also noted when antibody was detected in the specimen for more than one phlebovirus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A 26-year-old male patient who had an 8 years history of recurrent peripheral edema with diarrhea and hypoproteinemia was evaluated. Endoscopic jejunal and ileal biopsy revealed markedly dilated mucosal lymph vessels with no evidence of inflammation. 99mTc-labeled human serum albumin (HSA) scintigraphy showed significant activity accumulating in the gastrointestinal tract to represent 99mTc-HSA leakage into the bowel lumen. A diagnosis of protein losing enteropathy and intestinal lymphangiectasia could be made. After treatment with a high protein and fat restricted diet, his symptoms subsided and the serum protein level was normalized.

Abstract
Hantavirus, a genus in the family Bunyaviridae, is comprised of at least four serologically distinct types: Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala and Prospect Hill. The present communication reports the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for typing 27 independently isolated Hantaviruses from 5 different continents. Total cellular RNA was extracted from virus-infected Vero E6 cell monolayers by the acid guanidium thiocyanate-phenol-chloroform method. We have utilized 5 different sets of oligonucleotide primers ranging from 18 to 22 nucleotides in length; one set was specific for a conserved region of the S genomic segment and used as genus-specific primers, the other 4 sets of primers were designed from unique sequences of the M genomic segment such that each primer set was specific to only one serological type of Hantavirus. The PCR products were analyzed by restriction endonuclease digestion for further confirmation. We typed 10, 12, 3 and 1 isolates into Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala and Prospect Hill respectively. The results of PCR were 100% agreeable with that of serological typing, and thus, PCR can be used as an adjunct test with serological method(s) or an independent test for diagnosis and for typing of new isolates of Hantaviruses.

Abstract
This study was done to suggest basic modifications in the present situation for the family of women in labour which is a separation management method. The study design was a descriptive study. The number of the subjects were 80. They were husbands, mothers in law, and mothers of women in labour who were full term and for whom there were no complications, either for the mother or the fetus. Data collection was done with a structured questionnaire which was analyzed using frequencies. The results were as follows, 1. Most of the subjects (95.0%) wanted to participate in the labour process. 2. The subjects wanted to support the women in labour by way of encouraging (95.0%), consoling (95.0%), listening to (75.0%), praying with (68.8%), hand holding (97.5%), stroking (63.8%), helping with respiration control (50.0%), maintaining relaxation (46.3%), changing position (58.8%), and illustration (58.8%). 3. The subjects answered that they expected their participation to have the effect of an easier labour course (52.5%), security for the women in labour (95.0%), and providing a better relationship between the women in labour (66.3%) and the new baby (55.0%). 4. The priority of the response as to who is the best supporter was husband, and mother of the women in labour in that order. It can be concluded that nurses maintained a management method which ignored the needs of the families of women in labour. If given consideration is to be given to these subjects, future programs should initiate ways to let the families participate in the labour process.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to delineate the histopathologic findings of the spleen after Hantaan viral inoculation, which is the largest lymphoid organ in rats, and to identify the viral location by anti-Hantaan virus (HTNV) monoclonal antibody. All the sixty one suckling rats of less than twenty four hours of age were used. Except twenty one rats of control group, twenty-five rats inoculated intracerebrally for the early change and fifteen suckling rats inoculated intramuscularly for the late change were uniformly susceptible to lethal infection with the ROK 84-105-1 strain of seed HTNV. The characteristic histopathologic findings were; appearance of macrophages below the splenic capsule on the 3rd day, small lymphocytes around the periarteriolar sheath on the 5th day increasing in numbers on the 7th day, and a markedly expanded marginal zone with some immunoblasts and plasma cells as well as decreased extramedullary hematopoiesis on the 9th and 14th days. Time of onset of histopathologic changes in spleen thickness, appearance of medium and large lymphocytes and degree of extramedullary hematopoiesis were influenced by inoculation route, whereas expansion of the marginal zone was affected by postnatal age.

Abstract
The etiologic agent of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), Hantaan virus, was first isolated in 1976. Since then numerous Hantaan-like viruses have been isolated and five serotypes of Hantavirus have been recognized. Serological studies indicate that these viruses are globally distributed, with each serotype occurring in specific areas. Hantaan virus has been intensively studied antigenically, biochemically, and genetically. However there is still a paucity of information on the pathogenesis of Hantaan virus in the human host. In this paper, we report the detection by thin section immune electron microscopy of the occurrence of numerous dense precipitates, typical inclusion bodies, a surface antigen layer, as well as Hantaan virion-like structures in the kidneys of patients that died during the acute phase of HFRS. These findings may shed some light on understanding the pathogenesis of HFRS in target organs most affected by the disease, such as the kidneys.

Abstract
This study refers to the clinical features of 11 cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) which was prevalent in Nagoya City University Medical School. The clinical course was divided into two parts: the febrile stage and the polyuria stage. Symptoms such as lumbago, muscular pain, general malaise and anorexia disappeared along with a fall of fever. The incubation period of this disease was estimated to be about three weeks. Polyuria, proteinuria, gastric complication and impairment of liver function seemed to be some of clinical features of this disease. There was no HFRS patient with severe renal failure in our cases. The presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) was confirmed in 3 of these 11 cases. Therefore, it was suggested that hemorrhagic tendency of this disease might be attributed to DIC. From our experiences, the most important factor for the treatment of the severe case was the earliest detection whether they were complicated by DIC or not. If they were suspected of DIC, it could be necessary to start treatment for DIC as soon as possible. Prophylactic measures for HFRS in our animal facility could contribute to the prevention of this disease.

Abstract
To characterize further the nature of haemostatic impairment in haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, we assessed platelet function in 9 patients in whom the diagnosis was serologically confirmed. Defective platelet aggregation was demonstrated in every patient. An abnormality of the granule release reaction was demonstrated in all of 7 patients tested. Gel-filtered platelets from a normal subject showed normal aggregation in plasma from a patient with impaired aggregation, which is evidence for an intrinsic platelet defect, and against the presence of a circulating inhibitor in this patient.

Abstract
Circadian rhythm is entrained in the 24-hour time interval by periodic factors in the environment, known as zeitgeber. But most rotating work schedules are outside the range of the entrainment of the pacemaker timing the human circadian sleep-wake cycle. It has been postulated that physiological and emotional disturbances occur in most human functions when the circadian rhythm is disturbed. So application of circadian principles to the design of shift schedules can aid in maintaining the temporal integrity of the circadian system and thereby minimize for the shift worker any detrimental consequences of circadian disruption. This study was a quasi-experimental study to test the effect of shift intervals for the clinical nurse on the circadian rhythm. Twenty nurses newly employed in general units of two hospitals were selected as an experimental group and twelve college nursing students as a control group. Both groups were selected according to an established criteria using a purposive sampling technique. Ten subjects were assigned to a weekly shift group and another ten to a biweekly shift group engaged in a semi-continuous shift schedule (sunday off) with a backward direction; that is, morning-evening-night shift. The control group worked a morning shift for 42 days. Oral temperature rhythm, waking time, sleep-wake cycle, fatigue, and mental performance were measured during the experimental period. The data collection period was from April 30, 1990 to June 10, 1990. MANOVA, paired t-test, ANOVA, and Student Newman Keuls method were used for statistical analysis. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Phase delay in the acrophase of temperature rhythm was shown according to the backward rotating shift. A complete adaptation to work on the night shift was achieved between the sixth and ninth day of the night shift. 2. There was no difference in either waking time or sleep-wake cycle according to the duration of the working day for every shift group. Significant difference was found in the waking time and the sleep-wake cycle for subjects on the morning, evening, and night shift in both of the shift groups (weekly shift group: lambda = 0.121, p less than 0.01, lambda = 0.112, p less than 0.01, biweekly shift group: lambda = 0.116, p less than 0.01, lambda = 0.084, p less than 0.01). 3. There was no difference in fatigue between the first working day and the last working day for the control group and for the biweekly shift group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
To characterize the immune response in haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, serial changes in immune effector cells were measured in 14 patients. Significant findings included initial elevations of all major leucocyte populations, increases in suppressor T cells and B cells, decreases in helper/suppressor cell ratios, and a dramatic increase in activated T cells. These changes were most marked in severely ill patients. Changes reverted to normal over approximately one week.

Abstract
This paper presents the results of an empirical study of the voltage-current relationship of flashlamps. It is shown that the Goncz and Marotta relationships are limited in that they can only be used in certain current density regimes. Based on empirical data, a generalized empirical voltage-current relationship is proposed. In particular, the generalized form is found to be a voltage-current relationship with a power factor. This power factor is found to be a function of the current density of the flashlamp. The relationships used in the past are found to fit this generalized form according to their respective current density regimes.

Abstract
Extracellular phospholipase A2 activity has been identified in pleural fluid of patients with tuberculosis. This enzyme is a calcium requiring protein and has a pH optimum of 10.0. The enzyme was inhibited by the active site-directed histidine reagent, rho-bromophenacyl bromide. Ionic and non-ionic detergents, or the sulfhydryl reagent dithiothreitol, caused loss of enzyme activity. When substrate specificity was tested using 2-[1-14C]linoleoyl phospholipids as substrates, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine was the best substrate, followed by phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine. This phospholipase A2 showed high affinity for heparin, and was recognized by a monoclonal antibody raised against phospholipase A2 from human synovial fluid. These findings suggest that an extracellular phospholipase A2, which may belong to the 14K group II phospholipase A2 family, exists in the pleural fluid of patients with tuberculosis.

Abstract
This study was attempted to provide us with basic information on how to improve understanding with patients for operation, and to offer them better nursing and treatment. This kind of study will help scientific application to nursing practice and operating room. The data was collected by interviewing 29 patients who underwent the elective surgery under the general anesthesia at Y hospital in Seoul. The interview ran from October 15 to December 15, 1989. The research instrument was a anxiety measurement device (SAAI) originally developed by Spielberger, et al and modified by Jung-Tack Kim. 1. Hypothesis Testing Hypothesis one was that there would be a difference in state anxiety level according to a time difference in waiting for operation. This hypothesis was rejected (state anxiety level one hour before operation P greater than .05, r = .747, State anxiety level half an hour before operation P greater than .05, r = .1550, state anxiety level just before operation, P greater than .05, r = .1099). However, state anxiety level appeared to be associated with a longer waiting period, like one day before operation (P less than .05, r = .4628). Hypothesis two was that there would be a difference according to state anxiety level of patients for operation. This was rejected. (Change of blood pressure in systolic P greater than .05, r = -.1082. Change of blood pressure in diastolic P greater than .05, r = -.088, Change of pulse rate, P less than .05, r = 1.909) 2. Examining trait anxiety and state anxiety levels, the average level of trait anxiety was 42.034, and the average level of state anxiety one day before operation was 43,000. The average level of state anxiety was averaged 42.356 in a waiting room for operation. 3. Examining the state anxiety level by time period, the level one hour before was 42.379, the level half an hour before 42.276, and the level just before operation 42.414. The low level of state anxiety was due to the fact that premedication was not eliminated. 4. Age and time period like one day before operation was related to state anxiety level (F = 5.271, P less than .001) and blood pressure in waiting room for operation. That is, state anxiety level and blood pressure of patients one day before operation appeared high. Sex was related to changes of blood pressure; the blood pressure of male patients appeared higher than that of female patients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
To investigate the effect of nutritional status of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients on the development of peritonitis, a cross-sectional study of the nutritional status of 79 CAPD patients and a retrospective study on the incidence of peritonitis in these patients were done. The incidences of peritonitis were compared according to the nutritional status of these patients on CAPD. Protein-caloric malnutrition assessed by a score system based on triceps skinfold thickness, mid-arm circumference, serum albumin level and relative body weight was demonstrated in 27 patients (34%) among 79 total CAPD patients. The incidence of peritonitis was significantly higher in poor nutritional status patients, with 1.09 +/- 0.86/patient-year, than that in normal nutritional status patients with 0.64 +/- 0.72/patient-year (p less than 0.05). In patients with the same nutritional status, patients using Dianeal solution had a trend of a lower incidence of peritonitis than those using Peritosol solution. In conclusion, the nutritional status and possibly the type of CAPD solution may influence CAPD peritonitis as risk factors.

Abstract
The clinical findings of 29 patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) caused by Seoul virus were evaluated and compared with the previously reported clinical findings of classic Korean hemorrhagic fever (KHF). The diagnoses of these patients were made by hemagglutination inhibition test. The results were as follows: 1) The disease occurred predominantly in males with a high incidence in the third and fourth decades of life. 2) The highest incidence of the disease occurred in October-December. 3) Major symptoms were fever, abdominal or flank pain, vomiting and myalgia. 4) Major signs were petechia, CVA tenderness, pharyngeal injection, and conjunctival infection, but these signs were much less common than in patients with classic KHF. 5) The treatments were mainly conservative and there was no fatal case in the study subjects. These findings suggest that the clinical course of Seoul virus infection may be much milder than that of classic KHF and the outcome may be more favorable.

Abstract
During October-December 1987, chigger mites infested on the striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius coreae) collected at Pochun-gun, Gyeonggi Province and Chinhae city, Kyongnam Province were identified. 1. Of 171 back-striped mice collected, chigger mites were found from 58 mice, showing 33.9% of infestation rate. 2. Total 865 chigger mites collected were classified into seven species; Leptotrombidium pallidum (4.3%), L. palpale(23.0%), L. orientalis(20.2), L. zetum(19.0%). Neotrombicula tamiyai(32.9), N. japonica(0.2%) and Euschongastia koreaensis(0.3%). Though the most dominant species in number was N. tamiyai(32.9% of the total), this species was collected at very limited locality and for a short period. Therefore, most common species in Korea seems to be L. palpale which was found at all localities throughout the whole survey period. L. pallidum which is known as the vector species of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea was collected in a very low number(4.3% of the total chiggers collected). 3. The number of chigger mites infested on a host animal showed great variations from one chigger up to 207 chiggers. The present study has shown that there may be other Leptotrombidium species mite(s) for the vector and host of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea.

Abstract
The HLA-C encoded gene products display several characteristics which distinguish them from HLA-A and -B. The HLA-C antigens are poorly expressed on the cell surface, they display multiple proteins with different isoelectric points, and alloimmunization to HLA-C antigens is less common. To investigate whether the multiple products result from differential splicing of HLA-C gene transcripts, we have isolated a full-length cDNA clone encoding the Cw6 antigen. Class I antigens produced by the cDNA clone in transfected cells were of the same relative mass as those observed in the parental cells when analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) gel analysis of the cDNA translated products in transfectants revealed multiple IEF bands. All IEF bands detected in the transfectants were also found in the parental cells, indicating that the multiplicity of the C-locus products was not due to differential splicing of HLA-C gene transcripts, but was probably due to post-translational modification. Comparison of the sequences of C-locus alleles with those of A and B alleles did not show any apparent sequences which would generate multiple IEF bands. Comparison of the coding regions for seven HLA-C alleles and one HLA-C-related class I gene with available data for 15 HLA-A and 20 HLA-B alleles demonstrated several unique features for the HLA-C locus. Six sites in the extra cellular domains, three in a1 and three in a3, were unique. While the cytoplasmic (CP) domain of HLA-A and -B are almost identical, the CP of HLA-C alleles is unique. Similar unique features of HLA-C are also observed in the transmembrane domain, resulting in locus-specific residues between positions 295 and 300. The present study has ruled out differential mRNA splicing as a mechanism for the multiplicity of Cw6 antigens and demonstrated unique HLA-C locus sequences.

Abstract
Several clinical variants of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) are caused by Hantaan and related viruses. Since 1951, 500-900 patients with HFRS have been hospitalized annually in Korea. Although HFRS is associated primarily with rural areas, it is now being recognized as an urban problem and a particular hazard to laboratory staff using rodents for research. Recently, epidemic outbreaks of leptospirosis and scrub typhus have occurred during the HFRS season, leading to confusion in diagnosis. Serologic diagnosis of HFRS is based on the demonstration of IgM antibodies to Hantaviruses by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The specific Hantavirus causing infection can be identified on the basis of titers of plaque-reduction neutralizing antibody. Results of studies with monoclonal antibodies suggest that viral subtypes exist for each Hantaviral serotype presently recognized. While infection with Hantaviruses is known to be a problem of worldwide dimensions, present evidence indicates that it occurs over a wider area than previously recognized. Vertical transmission of Hantaan virus in a pregnant woman has been documented.

Abstract
To determine the extent of hantavirus infection in Singapore, serological studies using the indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test were conducted on commensal rodents and on human patients in 4 diagnostic groups. Virus isolation using a Vero E6 cell line was performed on hantaviral antigen-positive rodent lung tissue. Of 142 rodents and 3 insectivores studied, 37 (26%) were seropositive for IFA. Rattus norvegicus was the predominant species captured, with the highest species-specific seropositive rate of 32% (36 of 113). A hantavirus strain, R36, was isolated from one R. norvegicus. Seropositive rates for human patients were: 8% respectively for dengue haemorrhagic fever suspects and for non-A non-B hepatitis patients, 3% for leptospirosis suspects and 2% for acute nephritis patients. 2 patients had marked liver dysfunction but mild renal involvement. This hepatitis-like manifestation appears to be a clinical variant of hantavirus infection.

Abstract
Laboratory-acquired haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) has been reported in many countries. A serological survey of laboratory white rats and of laboratory personnel for antibodies to hantaviruses was conducted in Singapore. Forty-four per cent (143/329) of rats were seropositive by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test but none had hantaviral antigens in lung tissues. Two of 74 laboratory personnel were seropositive but neither had a history of clinical illness. The high seropositivity rate among laboratory rats led to their replacement with Hantaan virus-free strains. To eliminate the hazard of laboratory-acquired HFRS, regular serological screening of laboratory rats and replacement of infected animals with seronegative stocks should be implemented. High risk techniques with laboratory rats, which are likely to generate aerosols, should be performed in biological safety cabinets. Serological surveillance of laboratory personnel and reporting of suspected HFRS cases are useful in the early detection of hantavirus infection.

Abstract
Viruses isolated from the blood of two Korean haemorrhagic fever patients were propagated in cell culture and compared to prototype Hantaan virus which was isolated from Apodemus mice. The antigenic properties of the human isolates were found to be closely related to Hantaan virus by plaque reduction neutralization, haemagglutination inhibition and fluorescent antibody staining with both polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. The medium genome segment of each human isolate was sequenced and compared to that of Hantaan virus. Nucleotides comprising the Hantaan virus G1 and G2 envelope protein-coding regions differed from those of the other viruses by only 5.4% and 5.7%. The human isolates differed from one another by 1.6%. The nucleotide differences resulted in predicted amino acid variations of 1.3% to 2.3% among the three viruses, with the majority occurring as conservative substitutions in G1.

Abstract
A case of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome that originated in Malaysia is reported. The patient presented with clinical symptoms which were not typical of the disease as seen in endemic regions. Renal involvement, which is characteristic of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, was mild, and the predominant symptom was a persistently marked elevation of serum transaminase levels that was suggestive of hepatitis. Liver involvement has not been described in the Asian form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. The patient developed a petechial skin rash and had severe thrombocytopenia. Serological confirmation of the diagnosis of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome was obtained by the demonstration of significant antibody rises to hantaviruses in the patient's acute- and convalescent-phase sera.

Abstract
By the end of 1985, 126 human cases of laboratory acquired hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) were recorded in Japan. Seroepidemiological studies revealed that laboratory rats exhibited high IFA titers against Hantaan or related viruses at locations where HFRS patients occurred. Laboratory researchers contracted HFRS more frequently than laboratory animal technicians or caretakers, although a laboratory animal caretaker died of the disease. Inhalation of HFRS-virus contaminated air in an animal facility is the likely cause of infection with this virus. Wound infection during animal experiments may be another important route of infection. Infection of laboratory rats can occur by transferring animals from contaminated to other animal facilities. Tissue fragments or cells of transplantable animal tumors are a potential source of spreading the HFRS virus. Eradication of HFRS virus from a contaminated animal facility can be achieved best by elimination of all animals in the room, especially when human HFRS is associated with an infected colony. In some cases, when IFA titers of the sera of the rats tested were low, infection apparently disappeared without instituting any particular control measures other than ordinary procedures for care and management of laboratory animals. HFRS viruses have not yet been eradicated from all animal facilities in Japan. Therefore, serological monitoring of laboratory rats continues.
