Abstract
The impending closure of many large psychiatric hospitals has led to the involvement of clinical psychologists in surveys of whole hospital populations. REHAB is a recent addition to the range of behaviour-rating scales. In a test of the inter-rater reliability of this scale, we have assessed the ratings from an initial sample of 50 patients. We obtained higher correlation co-efficients than expected given the larger number of raters used in our study. Some implications for the general use of rating scales in reprovision are discussed.

Abstract
Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a paraneoplastic autoimmune disorder caused by an IgG-mediated reduction in number of presynaptic voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC) at the neuromuscular junction. In at least 50% of cases, the stimulus for antibody production may be VGCC on small cell lung cancer (SCLC). In this study membranes isolated from a human small cell lung cancer xenograft (Mar), that bound [3H]PN200-110, a VGCC antagonist, were subjected to Western blotting using plasma from 12 LEMS patients and eight controls. Although one band recognised by 3/12 LEMS IgGs might be associated with the VGCC, a number of other proteins were recognised both by LEMS plasma, and by plasma from patients with other disorders. The results illustrate the difficulties found using Western blotting with autoimmune plasma to identify specific polypeptides in a crude antigen preparation.

Abstract
Eleven infants with neonatal onset of intractable epilepsy are described, who showed the clinical and electroencephalographic features of Ohtahara syndrome. With time, transition to West and Lennox-Gastaut syndromes occurred. No cause could be found in eight cases. All nine survivors are severely mentally and physically handicapped and continue to have seizures. Early infantile epileptic encephalopathy represents the earliest of the age-dependent epileptic encephalopathies.

Abstract
In 34 pure-bred Arabian horses, divided into four groups (Gr. I, 10 pregnant mares; Gr. II, seven barren mares; Gr. III, 10 foals born in 1981; Gr. IV, seven foals born in 1982), seasonal changes in haemoglobin level, haematocrit value, sedimentation rate, red blood cell number and diameter, percentage of erythroblasts and reticulocytes, and index F were studied. Seasonal cyclicity was found in all groups in the haemoglobin level, haematocrit value and RBC diameter. It was also found in the sedimentation rate (PCV) and in index F, but not for the youngest foals (Gr. IV). For the RBC number the cyclicity is given in both groups of foals, and the erythroblast and reticulocyte percentage only in the older foals (Gr. III). Out of eight indices studied cyclicity was found in all foals in Gr. III, in five of the mares in Groups I and II, and in four of the youngest foals in Gr. IV. There is no difference in the cyclicity of indices studied between pregnant and barren mares.

Abstract
In 34 pure breed Arabian horses divided into four groups (Gr. I--10 pregnant mares, Gr. II--7 barren mares, Gr. III--10 foals born in 1981, Gr. IV--7 foals born in 1982) seasonal changes in total blood serum protein, its electrophoretic fractions and the activity of AspAT and AlAT were studied. Seasonal cyclicity was found in all groups in the amount of total serum proteins, and alpha 2- and beta 1-globulin fractions. Cyclicity was found in the level of albumin and activity of AspAT in three groups, not Gr. II, and in gamma-globulin, not Gr. IV. beta 2-globulin and AlAT cyclicity was found in two groups and alpha 1-globulin cyclicity was found only in Gr. II. Out of nine indices studied, cyclicity was found in eight of them in pregnant mares, Gr. I; in seven in older foals, Gr. III; in six in the young foals, Gr. IV; and in five in barren mares, Gr. II.

Abstract
In 34 pure-breed Arabian horses divided into four groups (Gr. I, ten pregnant mares; Gr. II, seven barren mares; Gr. III, ten foals born in 1981; Gr. IV, seven foals born in 1982) seasonal changes in the white blood cell system, cortisol level and lyzozyme activity were studied. Seasonal periodicity was found in all groups for the number of lymphocytes, segmented neutrophils and eosinophils and cortisol level. Leukocyte periodicity was found in three groups, but not in the barren mares. In lyzozyme activity there was periodicity in three groups but not in the youngest foals. In the stab neutrophils, basophils and monocytes no cycle was observed. The behaviour of the indices studied showed the influence of age of the horses (mature vs young) and the physiological state of the mares (pregnancy or barrenness).

Abstract
Monoclonal antibodies (MCA) have been developed against cell surface antigens (CSA) of Myxococcus xanthus undergoing fruiting body formation. Three of these antibodies are directed against CSA which increase during development, six against CSA which decrease and three against CSA which show no change during development. Western-type immunoblots have been done to determine the molecular weights of the CSA to which the various MCA bind. Various applications of these MCA to the study of myxobacterial cell interactions are discussed.

Abstract
Twenty Thoroughbred 3 year old horses (10 stallions and 10 mares), trained and raced at the Warsaw Race-Course were studied from March through November. Blood was taken approximately every 8 weeks to determine the activities of aspartate and alanine transaminases, acid and alkaline phosphatases and aldolase. It was observed that the activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase reached their maxima in July and alanine transaminase in May. The activities of acid phosphatase and aldolase showed their minima in July. Comparing these data with the literature it was noted that the changes observed are mainly seasonally-dependent; but, training had some influence on the activity of the enzymes involved in energy metabolism.

Abstract
In 8 stallions and 6 mares of pure Arabian breed the diurnal changes in the levels of lactic and pyruvic acid, glucose, and alkaline reserve were studied. All of them showed distinct diurnal changes but they failed to fulfil the criteria of circadian rhythm according to Halberg. It was found that all peaks occurred during the dark phase of the 24 h period except the glucose level in the stallions. Three of the indices studied showed higher mean diurnal levels in the mares than in the stallions. Only in the glucose level the mean values were reversed.

Abstract
SYSNOPSISThis paper presents findings from a controlled investigation of psychomotor performance in depression and mania to test Court's (1968) continuum model. This model proposes that, unlike the common bipolar view of depression and mania, there is a continuum ranging from normal, through depression, to mania. Simple reaction time measures did not confirm this hypothesis. However, results of more complex psychomotor performance did provide some confirmation, and, also, provided evidence of a ‘central processing’ deficit in both manic and depressed subjects.

Abstract
SYSNOPSISOn the Aubert illusion, involving judgement of visual vertical in the absence of visual field cues, depressed patients were shown to display regressive tendencies compared with controls. In fact, their performance was very similar to that of children. However, their performance at judging postural vertical without the use of visual field cues was normal. The impaired performance of the depressed patients was compared with the deficits observed on the same experimental tasks for various other groups of patients with psychiatric or neurological disorders.

Abstract
1. A preliminary study was made of chewing duringeating with a total of sixcows with rumen fistulas, given diets of hay or herbage. A sieving technique was used to determine the size of particles of food swallowed at intervals throughout the eating period. The number of jaw movements, number and weight of the swallowed food boluses and the time spent eating were measured with each diet.2. The mean particle size of hay contained in a bolus collected at the cardia varied between individual cows from 1602 μm to 1244 μm. Boluses swallowed in the first few minutes of eating contained particles of a larger average size than those at any other time during the meal. Also, the rate of swallowing boluses of food was much faster at the beginning of a meal and the weight of boluses smaller than at any other time. The frequency of jaw movements did not vary appreciably during a meal.3. Increasing the amount of hay given to the cows by 50 % or giving a different hay did not cause any significarlt alteration in the average size of particles of swallowed hay, and changes in the rate of swallowing boluses, or in, the rate of jaw movements and the size of boluses were not very marked.4. With a diet of herbage, boluses were swallowed rapidly and the average particle size of swallowed food was larger than that of hay. Also, there were slightly more jaw movements per min and larger boluses than with hay.5. The observations made in the study are discussed in relation to possible factors that determine the particle size of swallowed food.
