Extremely stable all solution processed organic tandem solar cells with TiO2/GO recombination layer under continuous light illumination

One approach to harvest a wide solar spectral solar energy is to stack two solar cells with different absorption characteristics in a tandem cell architecture. Herein, solution processed tandem solar cells, with highly transparent titanium oxide (TiO2) and graphene oxide (GO) as an efficient recombination layer, were designed, fabricated and characterized. We have adopted poly[(4,4'-bis(3-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:''3'-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,5-(3-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole]:indene-C60 bisadduct (PSEHTT:ICBA) and poly[(4,4'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-4,7-diyl]:[6,6]-phenyl-C70 butyric acid methyl ester (PSBTBT:PC70BM) as the active layers for the front and rear cells, respectively. The TiO2/GO serves as an electron and hole collecting and recombination layer. The tandem solar cells showed a high open circuit voltage (VOC) 1.62 V, a moderate short circuit current density (JSC) 8.23 mA cm(-2), fill factor (FF) 62.98%, leading to the power conversion efficiency of 8.40%. The obtained VOC value of tandem solar cells is ideal for the summation of VOCs attained from front and rear cells and it is evident that our tandem solar cells are well connected in series. Moreover, this tandem cell exhibits a 20% drop in conversion efficiency under continuous AM illumination for 2880 h.

Transparent flexible organic solar cells with 6.87% efficiency manufactured by an all-solution process

We demonstrate that polyaniline (PANI) behaves as an anode buffer layer, which makes it an excellent hole transport layer. PANI was coated between the photoactive layer and the top anode in transparent flexible organic solar cells (OSCs). The performances of the devices with different PANI thicknesses were investigated. The results demonstrate that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased nearly four-fold with an 18 nm thick PANI layer compared to the reference cell without PANI. The optimum device performance with an 18 nm PANI layer exhibits a Jsc of 11.60 mA cm(-2), a V(oc) of 0.89 V, a FF of 66.87%, and thus a PCE of 6.87% under AM1.5G illumination of 100 mW cm(-2). The conversion efficiency of transparent flexible OSCs changes after 1500 bending cycles.

Organic photovoltaic solar cells with cathode modified by ZnO

Solution processed cathode organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) utilizing thin layer of ZnO with 27% increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE) to control devices have been demonstrated. Devices without the presence of ZnO layer have much lower PCE than the ones with ZnO layer. Cathode modification layer can be used to reduce photogenerated excitions and finally improve the performance of the OPVs. The successful demonstrations of OPVs with an introduction of ZnO cathode layer give promise of further device progresses.

A Study on the Reactive Compatibilization of a PBT/LCP Blend: Catalyst Effect

The in situ compatibilization of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) with liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) via catalyzed transesterification reaction was examined through thermal, rheological, morphological and mechanical studies. The addition of catalyst, dibutyltindilaurate, was found to promote the transesterification between PBT and LCP. Maintenance of high vacuum environment was required to produce the high molecular weight copolymers in the reactor, which, acting at the interface, diminished the size of the dispersed phase (LCP) and enhanced interfacial adhesion that led to an early increase of the flexural strength. Flexural strength was reduced after long time reaction due to the chain scission. Transesterification confirmed by NMR spectroscopic analysis played a major role in the interchange process.

Determination of kresoxim-methyl and its thermolabile metabolites in pear utilizing pepper leaf matrix as a protectant using gas chromatography

Kresoxim-methyl and its two thermolabile metabolites, BF 490-2 and BF 490-9, were analyzed in pear using a pepper leaf matrix protection to maintain the metabolites inside the gas chromatography system. Samples were extracted with a mixture of ethyl acetate and n-hexane (1:1, v/v) and purified and/or separated using a solid phase extraction procedure. The pepper leaf matrix was added and optimized with cleaned pear extract to enhance metabolite sensitivity. Matrix matched calibration was used for kresoxim-methyl in the pear matrix and for metabolites in the pear mixed with pepper leaf matrix. Good linearity was obtained for all analytes with a coefficient of determination, r² ⩾ 0.992. Limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.006 and 0.02 mg kg⁻¹ and 0.02 and 0.065 mg kg⁻¹ for kresoxim-methyl and the metabolites, respectively. Recoveries were carried out at two concentration levels and were 85.6–97.9% with a relative standard deviation <2.5%. The method was successfully applied to field incurred pear samples, and only kresoxim-methyl was detected at a concentration of 0.03 mg kg⁻¹.

Disability in atypical parkinsonian syndromes is more dependent on memory dysfunction than motor symptoms

BACKGROUND

There is a gap in the systematic description and investigation of functional disability in corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Additionally, the relations between disability, apraxia, cognitive and behavioural changes are not well understood in atypical parkinsonian syndromes.

METHODS

Fifty patients were included in this study (CBS = 18; PSP = 11), including a subgroup of primary progressive aphasia-nonfluent variant (PPA-nfv = 21) who were used as a control group given the clinic-pathological overlap. Functional disability (basic and instrumental activities of daily living), general cognition and behavioural changes were evaluated at baseline, with a subgroup of patients being reassessed after 16 months.

RESULTS

The corticobasal syndrome group had the most marked disability in basic activities in comparison to progressive supranuclear palsy and primary progressive aphasia-nonfluent variant. Longitudinal decline was marked for all three groups. In a linear regression examining factors behind functional disability in CBS and PSP, memory dysfunction emerged as the main factor (48.5%), followed by apraxia (14.9%) and atypical parkinsonian symptoms (9.6%).

CONCLUSIONS

Memory dysfunction is the most important factor in functional disability in CBS and PSP, which has to be taken into consideration in disease management, prognosis and planning of services to fully address patients' and families' needs.

Effects of Korean ginseng berry extract on sexual function in men with erectile dysfunction: a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study

Ginseng is beneficial for many aspects of human physiology, including sexual function. In this study, we have evaluated the efficacy and safety of an extract of ginseng berry, which has a ginsenoside profile distinct from other parts of the plant, on sexual function in men with erectile dysfunction. In all, 119 men with mild-to-moderate ED participated in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled clinical study. They were administered 4 tablets of either standardized Korean ginseng berry (SKGB, 350 mg ginseng berry extract per tablet), or placebo, daily, for 8 weeks. Efficacy was assessed with the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-15 and premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT) at the end of the 4th and 8th week. We observed that the total and each of the individual domain scores of IIEF-15 increased from 40.95 ± 7.05 to 46.19 ± 12.69 significantly in the SKGB by the 8th week (P<0.05). The erectile function domain of IIEF changed slightly from 17.17 ± 2.57 to 18.59 ± 5.99 in the SKGB group by the 8th week (P<0.05). In addition, PEDT scores significantly improved from 9.14 ± 4.57 to 7.97 ± 4.4 and 7.53 ± 4.26 in the SKGB group after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment (P<0.05). Safety markers including hormone and lipid in the blood were assessed at the end of the 4th and 8th week and they remained unchanged. Oral administration of the SKGB extract improved all domains of sexual function. It can be used as an alternative medicine to improve sexual life in men with sexual dysfunction.

Activities of daily living in progressive non-fluent aphasia, logopenic progressive aphasia and Alzheimer's disease

BACKGROUND/AIMS

This study examined functional changes in progressive non-fluent aphasia (PNFA) and logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the association between function, cognition and behaviour.

METHODS

59 patients were assessed with the Disability Assessment of Dementia (DAD), Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R) and the Cambridge Behavioural Inventory Revised (CBI-R).

RESULTS

No differences between groups in basic and instrumental activities of daily living (ADLs), and total ACE-R scores were found; there were correlations between total DAD and ACE-R scores for PNFA and LPA. Over 12 months, PNFA showed the marked decline of basic ADLs, whereas all three groups showed marked decline of instrumental ADLs.

CONCLUSION

PNFA, LPA and AD appear functionally similar when matched for disease duration. The rate of decline of ADLs depends, however, on disease diagnosis.
