Abstract
Choriocarcinoma is a highly malignant tumor of trophoblastic origin. Primary fallopian tube choriocarcinoma is an extremely rare occurrence, especially in women over 50 years of age. This article concerns a case of tubal choriocarcinoma developing in a 54-year-old woman, which the authors present together with a brief review of the literature. The woman presented with irregular vaginal bleeding for two months, following three months of amenorrhea. Transvaginal dopolar and pelvic computed tomography (CT) scan showed an adnexal cystomic-solid mass. Her serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels were 29,1116 mIU/ml. The patient underwent hysterectomy and bisalpingo-oophorectomy. Histology was suggestive of tubal choriocarcinoma. Immunohistochemistry tests were positive for the hCG, Ki 67, CK, PLAP, and negative for CD30, supporting the diagnosis of choriocarcinoma. A combination of 5-Fu and KSM was administrated postoperatively. After four cycles of chemotherapy, her serum hCG level fell to the normal range. The patient remains disease-free 14 months after disease diagnosis.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this paper was to study the relationship between the intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria in the Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS As a cross-sectional study, common carotid artery (CCA) IMT as a surrogate marker of cardiovascular disease is adopted. Data were obtained from a study undertaken to evaluate the prevalence of diabetic complications. Body mass measurements, fasting blood measures, urinary albuminuria creatinine ratio and carotid atherosclerotic measurements were investigated. Association of the carotid IMT with albuminuria stage and eGFR was determined by stepwise multivariate regression analysis adjusting for the possible confounders. RESULTS 1) The mean age of all 721 patients was 65.33±11.32 years and the duration of diabetes was 7.72±6.93 years. 2) The percentage of impaired eGFR (<60 mL/min/1.73 m2) and albuminuria was 4.9% and 41.3% respectively, 37.0% with microalbuminuria and 4.3% with macroalbuminuria. 3) Compared to subjects with normoalbuminuria (28.8%), the percentage of CCA-IMT thickening in subjects with macroalbuminuria (41.9%) and microalbuminuria (43.1%) was higher (P<0.01). Moreover, compared to patients with eGFR ≥90 mL/min/1.73 m2 (28.8%), patients with eGFR ranged from 60 to 89 mL/min/1.73 m2 (43.2%) and eGFR< 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (51.4%) tended to have greater percentage of CCA-IMT thickening (P<0.01). 4) In a stepwise regression model, age, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, reduced HDL-cholesterol and eGFR were independent predictors of CCA-IMT, after adjusting for potential confounders including gender, current smoker, duration of diabetes, waist circumference, hypertension, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, postprandial glucose, HbA1c and albuminuria stage. CONCLUSION Reduced eGFR associated with IMT thickening independently of albuminuria is found in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and further studies investigating the clinical outcomes are needed because this study is based on a cross-sectional design.

Abstract
In this manuscript, we develop printable graphene ink through a solvent-exchange method. Printable graphene ink in ethanol and water free of any surfactant is dependent on matching the surface tension of the cross-solvent with the graphene surface energy. Percolative transport behavior is observed for films made of this printable ink. Optical conductivity is then calculated based on sheet resistance, optical transmittance, and thickness. Upon analyzing the ratio of dc/optical conductivity versus flake size/layer number, we report that our dc/optical conductivity is among the highest of films based on direct deposited graphene ink. This is the first demonstration of scalable, printable, surfactant-free graphene ink derived directly from graphite.

Abstract
Dripping and jetting regimes in microfluidic multiphase flows have been investigated extensively, and this review summarizes the main observations and physical understandings in this field to date for three common device geometries: coaxial, flow-focusing and T-junction. The format of the presentation allows for simple and direct comparison of the different conditions for drop and jet formation, as well as the relative ease and utility of forming either drops or jets among the three geometries. The emphasis is on the use of drops and jets as templates for microparticle and microfiber syntheses, and a description is given of the more common methods of solidification and strategies for achieving complex multicomponent microparticles and microfibers.

Abstract
Humanin is a small endogenous antiapoptotic peptide, originally identified as protective against Alzheimer's disease, but subsequently also found on human endothelium as well as carotid artery plaques. Endothelial dysfunction is a precursor to the development of atherosclerotic plaques, which are characterized by a highly proinflammatory, reactive oxygen species, and apoptotic milieu. Previous animal studies demonstrated that humanin administration may improve endothelial function. Thus the aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that patients with coronary endothelial dysfunction have reduced systemic levels of humanin. Forty patients undergoing coronary angiography and endothelial function testing were included and subsequently divided into two groups based on coronary blood flow (CBF) response to intracoronary acetylcholine (normal ≥ 50% increase from baseline, n = 20 each). Aortic plasma samples were obtained at the time of catheterization for the analysis of humanin levels and traditional biomarkers of atherosclerosis including C-reactive protein, Lp-Pla(2), and homocysteine. Baseline characteristics were similar in both groups. Patients with coronary endothelial dysfunction (change in CBF = -33 ± 25%) had significantly lower humanin levels (1.3 ± 1.1 vs. 2.2 ± 1.5 ng/ml, P = 0.03) compared with those with normal coronary endothelial function (change in CBF = 194 ± 157%). There was a significant and positive correlation between improved CBF and humanin levels (P = 0.0091) not seen with changes in coronary flow reserve (P = 0.76). C-reactive protein, Lp-Pla(2), and homocysteine were not associated with humanin levels. Thus we observed that preserved human coronary endothelial function is uniquely associated with higher systemic humanin levels, introducing a potential diagnostic and/or therapeutic target for patients with coronary endothelial function.

Abstract
The trapping of arsenic by zero valent iron is strongly dependant on iron by-products. Among these, lepidocrite has been scarcely studied. In this work, we studied the adsorption of two inorganic (As(III), As(V)) and one organic (dimethylarsinic acid, DMA) arsenic species onto lepidocrocite. pH influence was considered in the range 5 to 9, which corresponds to natural water pH. Langmuir model was used to simulate As adsorption isotherms. Our results showed that lepidocrocite offers high adsorption capacities: up to 0,25, 0,41 and 1 mol for As(V), DMA and As(III) could be respectively trapped per kilogram of zero-valent iron. pH influence varied from one arsenic species to another: increasing pH improve As(III) and DMA sorption whereas it has a very low effect on As(V) sorption.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex immune disease. The genetic variation in the B lymphoid tyrosine kinase (BLK) gene was found to associate with SLE in Caucasian population. However, the association of rs13277113 and rs4840568 with SLE was not extensively studied in Chinese population. In this study, we aim to test the association of SNP rs13277113 and rs4840568 with the disease risk of SLE in Chinese mainland population. A total of 532 patients with SLE and 576 controls were recruited. Unlabelled probe-based high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) was used in genotyping. HRMA with unlabelled probe successfully distinguished all genotypes. Significant differences were observed in both genotype and allele frequencies for rs13277113 and rs4840568. Minor alleles of rs13277113 (P = 4.2E-05, odds ratio [OR] 0.66, [95% CI 0.54-0.81]) and rs4840568 (P = 7.1E-05, OR 0.67, [95% CI 0.55-0.82]) were found to be protective against SLE. Polymorphisms of rs13277113 and rs4840568 in BLK gene were associated with SLE in Chinese population.

Abstract
AIM To compare cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features between isolated left ventricular non-compaction (IVNC) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS A consecutive series of 50 patients with IVNC from a single institution were reviewed. During the same period, 50 patients with DCM who had prominent trabeculations, who were matched for age, gender, and body surface area, were prospectively included. Left ventricular (LV) morphology and function were assessed using cardiac MRI. RESULTS Compared with patients with DCM, patients with IVNC had a significantly lower LV sphericity index and end-diastolic volume index (LVEDVI) and a greater LV ejection fraction (LVEF), number of trabeculated segments, and ratio of non-compacted to compacted myocardium (NC/C ratio). There were no significant differences in stroke volume index, cardiac output, and cardiac index between the two patient groups. In patients with IVNC, the number of trabeculated segments and the NC/C ratio correlated positively with LVEDVI (r=0.626 and r=0.559, respectively) and negatively with LVEF (r=-0.647 and r=-0.521, respectively, p<0.001 for all). In patients with DCM, the number of non-compacted segments and the NC/C ratio had no correlation with either the LVEDVI (r=-0.082 and r=-0.135, respectively) or the LVEF (r=0.097 and r=0.205, respectively). CONCLUSION There are demonstrable morphological and functional differences between IVNC and DCM at LV assessment using cardiac MRI. The occurrence of trabeculated myocardium might be due to a different pathophysiological mechanism.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with an immunogenetic background. This study aimed to determine the association between three functional SNPs of BANK1 (rs10516487, rs17266594 and rs3733197) with psoriasis in Southern Han Chinese population by determining their frequency in 242 patients with psoriasis and 317 healthy individuals. The genotype frequencies of the detected polymorphisms were analysed in relation to the susceptibility of psoriasis. Our data show that there is no significant difference in genotype distribution for the three BANK1 SNPs between patients and healthy controls. The AA frequency of rs3733197 is significantly higher in patients with psoriasis onset before the age of 23 than in those with late disease onset (P = 0.0069). In addition, analysis on BANK1 haplotype also suggests a protective role for TGC and CAT haplotype from psoriasis (OR 0.55, 95% CI: 0.34-0.89; P = 0.0144; OR 0.62, 95% CI: 0.42-0.92; P = 0.0175), whereas CGT haplotype is associated with increased risk of the disease (OR 1.38, 95% CI: 1.05-1.81, P = 0.0203). Overall, our result indicates that polymorphism in BANK1 is associated with susceptibility to psoriasis in Southern Han Chinese.

Abstract
Enterovirus 71 (EV71) has emerged as a significant pathogen causing large outbreaks in China for the past 3 years. Developing an EV71 vaccine is urgently needed to stop the spread of the disease; however, the adaptive immune response of humans to EV71 infection remains unclear. We examined the neutralizing antibody titers in HFMD patients and compared them to those of asymptomatic healthy children and young adults. We found that 80% of HFMD patients became positive for neutralizing antibodies against EV71 (GMT = 24.3) one day after the onset of illness. The antibody titers in the patients peaked two days (GMT = 79.5) after the illness appeared and were comparable to the level of adults (GMT = 45.2). Noticeably, the antibody response was not correlated with disease severity, suggesting that cellular immune response, besides neutralizing antibodies, could play critical role in controlling the outcome of EV71 infection in humans.

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection is the most common cause of genital ulcerative disease in the developed world. Keratinocytes are the primary cells involved in clinical lesions caused by HSV-2. In our study, we intensively examined cytokine expression in the HSV-2-infected keratinocytes. We observed upregulation of a series of cytokines including early-induced antiviral cytokines as interferons α, β (IFN-α, β), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), colony stimulating factors (CSFs) as G-CSF, GM-CSF, interleukin 3 (IL-3), growth factors (EGF, KGF, and IGF-β1), defensins, selectins, leukocyte function-associated antigens (LFAs,) and toll-like receptors (TLR-2, 3, 4, and 9). More importantly, we found that HSV-2-infected keratinocytes stimulated the proliferation of lymphocytes in co-cultivation system. These data suggest that keratinocytes participate in the immune response to HSV-2 infection in two ways. They secrete inflammatory cytokines to resist the HSV-2 infection directly and recruit the immune cells to eliminate the primary infection indirectly and enhance the adaptive immunity to prevent subsequent infections.

Abstract
153 Background: IMC-A12 (cixutumumab) is a fully human monoclonal antibody which targets the insulin-like growth factor receptor 1. Preclinical data suggests that the combination of androgen deprivation and IMC-A12 is much more effective than either treatment alone. This clinical trial tests the effectiveness of the combined treatment in a neoadjuvant fashion before radical prostatectomy. We have assayed serum samples from the first 18 patients to identify signs of on-target activity in this setting. Methods: Eligible men with high risk localized prostate cancer are defined by one of the following: Gleason score ≥ 8, PSA ≥ 20, Clinical Stage T2c-T3, or a risk for relapse exceeding 50% as defined by the Kattan nomogram. Men are treated for 3 months with goserelin, bicalutamide, and biweekly IMC-A12 infusions (10 mg/kg). The primary objective of the trial is to determine the rate of pathological complete response with an accrual goal of 28 men. Using samples from the first 18 patients on study, serum protein markers were assayed by ELISA and serum PSA and glucose levels were determined by clinical laboratory analysis. Results: Significant increases in c-peptide (1.7-fold, p<0.01), IGF-I (4.1-fold, p<0.01), IGF-II (1.32-fold, p<0.001), IGFBP-3 (1.9-fold, p<0.01), growth hormone (8-fold, p<0.01) were noted after initiation of ADT+IMC-A12, compared to pre-treatment levels. Non-significant increases of insulin (1.9-fold), IGFBP-1 (2-fold), and glucose (1.24-fold) levels were seen. Stratification of patients by nadir PSA levels correlated with residual tumor volume, likelihood of positive surgical margins and likelihood of lymph node metastases. Interestingly, patients with lower nadir PSA levels had smaller increases in c-peptide (50%, p<0.01), insulin (66%, p<0.02) and blood sugar (21%, P<0.01) compared to the patients with higher nadir PSA levels. Conclusions: Combined with ADT in the neoadjuvant setting, IMC-A12 effectively targets the IGF-1R axis in prostate cancer patients. Metabolic differences between patients may alter the efficacy of IMC-A12 in this setting. [Table: see text]

Copy number variations of the human histamine H4 receptor gene are associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. Br J Dermatol 2011; 163:935-40. Abstract
BACKGROUND Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex genetic disease; the histamine H4 receptor (HRH4) has been shown to be related to different kinds of autoimmune disorders; and copy number variations (CNVs) have been found to be associated with various types of diseases. OBJECTIVES To explore a possible association between HRH4 (formerly H4R) CNVs and the risk of SLE. METHODS Genomic DNA and RNA from 340 patients with SLE and 392 healthy controls were extracted, and CNVs and mRNA levels of HRH4 were examined. RESULTS The expression of HRH4 mRNA was significantly increased in patients with SLE compared with controls. Amplification of HRH4 copy numbers significantly increased the risk of SLE [P < 0·001, odds ratio (OR) 2·26, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·50-3·40]. HRH4 amplifications also positively correlated with the incidence of arthritis (P = 0·019, OR 1·96, 95% CI 1·11-3·47), and proteinuria (P < 0·001, OR 2·95, 95% CI 1·73-5·00) and antinuclear antibody abnormalities (P < 0·001, OR 2·97, 95% CI 1·66-5·33). Deletions of HRH4 copy numbers were protective against proteinuria (P = 0·03, OR 0·50, 95% CI 0·26-0·94). CONCLUSION CNVs of the HRH4 gene are associated with SLE.
