Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between level of physical activity and poor self-rated health in Korean adults. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted on 7,800 adults aged > or =19 years who completed the Health Interview and the Health Behavior Surveys, issued during the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005). METHODS The association between self-rated health and physical activity was tested using Chi-squared test. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratios of poor self-rated health for different levels of physical activity after adjusting for physical and chronic medical conditions. RESULTS The prevalence of poor self-rated health was significantly lower as the level of physical activity increased, and odds ratios for poor self-rated health were significantly lower for higher levels of physical activity after adjusting for age, marital status, educational status, smoking, alcohol consumption, and the number of physical impairments and chronic medical conditions. The association was similar in different age groups and among healthy respondents and respondents with physical impairments or chronic medical conditions. CONCLUSIONS Physical activity was positively associated with self-rated health in Koreans. The independent association between a lower level of physical activity and poor self-rated health supports public health programmes that encourage regular physical activity.

Abstract
AIMS To isolate and characterize the bacteriocin-producing bacteria (BPB) from the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens for probiotic use. METHODS AND RESULTS In total, 291 bacterial strains were isolated from broilers and screened for bacteriocin-producing ability. The bacteriocins produced by Enterococcus faecium SH 528, Ent. faecium SH 632 and Pediococcus pentosaceus SH 740 displayed inhibitory activity against pathogens including Clostridium perfringens and Listeria monocytogenes. Activity of the bacteriocins remained unchanged after 30 min of heat treatment at 60 degrees C or exposure to organic solvents, but diminished after treatment with proteolytic enzymes. PCR was used to detect the structural genes enterocin A and B in SH 528, enterocin L50 and P in SH 632, and pediocin PA-1 in SH 740. Most of them were resistant to 0.5% bile salts and remained viable after 2 h at pH 3.0. Ent. faecium SH 528 exhibited the highest amylase activity among the strains tested. CONCLUSIONS We selected Ent. faecium SH 528 and SH 632 and Ped. pentosaceus SH 740 by probiotic selection criteria including inhibition activity against pathogens. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The isolated BPB could potentially be used in the poultry industry as probiotics to control pathogens.

Abstract
Bacterial meningitis continues to be an important cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates and children through the world. Current strategies to prevention and therapy of bacterial meningitis are compromised by incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis, emergence of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms and lack of simple diagnostic tools in resource-limited settings. Successful prevention and treatment of bacterial meningitis requires the knowledge on epidemiology including prevalence of antimicrobial resistant pathogens, pathogenesis of meningitis, and pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobial agents. The introduction of the protein conjugate vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis has changed the epidemiology of bacterial meningitis. Suspected bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency and requires empiric antimicrobial therapy without delay, but recognition of pathogens with increasing resistance to antimicrobial agents is an important factor in selection of empiric antimicrobial regimen. A more complete knowledge on the pathogenesis of meningitis is likely to help in development of new diagnostic and therapeutic options for infants and children with bacterial meningitis.

Abstract
The sol-to-gel transition occurring at around body temperature makes the MPEG-PCL diblock copolymer an ideal candidate material for use as an injectable in situ-forming gel containing human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (hADSCs). The sol can be prepared at room temperature, and the gel forms at body temperature. Solutions of the copolymer containing hADSCs and osteogenic factors injected into rats formed gel scaffolds at the injection sites. The gels thus formed showed the interconnective pore structure required to support growth, proliferation, and differentiation of hADSCs. Bromodeoxyuridine-labeled hADSCs were confirmed to be present in gels formed in vivo. Bone formation was observed only in gel implants containing both hADSCs and osteogenic factors. Subcutaneous implantation of the in situ-forming gel scaffold demonstrated that hADSCs embedded in the gel stimulated much lower host tissue responses than did the gel alone, probably because of the unique immunomodulatory properties of hADSCs. In conclusion, our data on hADSCs embedded in an in situ gel scaffold suggest that this formulation may provide numerous benefits as a noninvasive alternative for tissue-engineered bone formation.

Abstract
To investigate the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) pollution in soils and air around incinerators, a total of 574 soil and 48 air samples were collected around 22 incineration facilities in Korea from 2003 to 2007. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs in the flue gases and air ranged from 0.01 to 21.50 ng I-TEQ Sm(-3) and 0.0002 to 9.95 pg I-TEQ Sm(-3), respectively whereas concentrations in soils ranged from n.d. to 153.23 pg I-TEQ g(-1) dw. The average value was 8.14 pg I-TEQ g(-1) dw in soil samples.

Abstract
Two scab diseases are recognized currently on citrus: citrus scab, caused by Elsinoë fawcettii, and sweet orange scab, caused by E. australis. Because the two species cannot be reliably distinguished by morphological or cultural characteristics, host range and molecular methods must be used to identify isolates. Four pathotypes of E. fawcettii and two of E. australis have been described to date based on host range. The host specificity and genetic relationships among 76 isolates from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Korea, New Zealand, and the United States were investigated. Based on pathogenicity tests on eight differential hosts, 61 isolates were identified as E. fawcettii and 15 as E. australis. Of 61 isolates of E. fawcettii, 24 isolates were identified as the Florida broad host range (FBHR) pathotype, 7 as the Florida narrow host range (FNHR) pathotype, 10 as the Tryon's pathotype, and 3 as the "Lemon" pathotype. Two new pathotypes, the "Jingeul" and the satsuma, rough lemon, grape-fruit, clementine (SRGC), are described, and four isolates did not fit into any of the known pathotypes of E. fawcettii. Of the 15 isolates of E. australis from Argentina and Brazil, 9 belonged to the sweet orange pathotype and 6 from Korea to the natsudaidai pathotype. E. fawcettii and E. australis were clearly distinguishable among groups by random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) assays and the E. fawcettii group was divided into three subgroups, A-1, A-2, and A-3. The A-1 group was composed of the FBHR, FNHR, and SRGC pathotypes; some Lemon pathotypes; and the uncertain isolates. The A-2 subgroup included all of the Tryon's pathotype isolates and one of the three Lemon pathotype isolates and the A-3 group contained the Jingeul pathotype isolates. E. australis was differentiated into two groups: B-1, the natsudaidai pathotype isolates, and B-2, the sweet orange pathotype isolates. Isolates of E. fawcettii and E. australis were clearly distinguishable by sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF) gene. There were also fixed nucleotide differences in the ITS and TEF genes that distinguished subgroups separated by RAPD-PCR within species. We confirmed two species of Elsinoë, two pathotypes of E. australis, and at least six pathotypes of E. fawcettii and described their distribution in the countries included in this study.

Abstract
We herein formulated and characterized an in situ-forming chitosan gel consisting of chitosan and glycerol phosphate (GP) disodium salt, and examined its use as an in vivo scaffold for rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs). First, the phase transition behaviors of chitosan solutions formulated with and without GP were characterized as a function of temperature. Chitosan solutions containing > 20 wt % GP became a gel at 37 degrees C and maintained this form for 28 days in vitro and in vivo. Next, we examined whether the chitosan gel could act as a suitable biocompatible substrate for the attachment and proliferation of rBMSCs. Immunohistochemistry clearly demonstrated that rBMSCs survived well on the scaffold created by in situ-forming chitosan gel in rats. Injection of chitosan gel alone induced macrophage accumulation in the host tissue and at the edge of the chitosan, whereas injection of chitosan gel containing rBMSCs was associated with decreased macrophage accumulation, indicating immunosuppression by the transplanted rBMSCs. Our results collectively show for the first time that chitosan gel could serve as an in situ-forming gel scaffold for entrapped rBMSCs in vivo.

Abstract
We measured cross-sections for the formation of (86g,87m,87g)Y, (88,89g)Zr, and (90,92m)Nb radionuclides for proton-induced reactions on natural zirconium by using a conventional stacked-foil activation technique in the energy range between 1 and 40MeV at the MC-50 cyclotron of the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Science. We compared the measured data with the available literature data and the theoretical calculation by the model codes TALYS and ALICE-IPPE. We also deduced the integral yields for thick targets from the measured cross-sections of the produced radionuclides. The optimum production possibility of the medically important (89g)Zr and (86)Y radionuclides were discussed elaborately.

Abstract
Haplotype frequencies for 6 Y-STRs (DYS522, DYS533, DYS549, DYS570, DYS576 and DYS643) were determined in 539 unrelated Korean males. A total of 375 haplotypes were observed with the overall haplotype diversity of 0.9967. In DYS570, we found new point-3 microvariant allele series, i.e., 18.3, 19.3 and 20.3. DNA sequence analysis showed that the full repeat sequences were [TTTC](n)ttc[TTTC](5). Duplicated DYS643 allele was found and discussed on its forensic impact on the Y-STR interpretation of male-male mixtures. In 140 confirmed father/son pairs, one mutation was found in DYS576 with the overall mutation rate of 1.10x10(-3)/locus/generation (95% CI 0.31-1.89x10(-3)).

Abstract
To reduce morbidity and mortality through integrated case management, a pilot study to detect respiratory viruses in patients with acute lower respiratory infections (ALRIs) was designed as part of a nationwide surveillance for this disease in Korea. The study population consisted of hospitalized patients under the age of 5 years with bronchiolitis, pneumonia, croup, or acute respiratory distress syndrome. A prospective 6-month study was performed. Two hundred and ninety-seven nasopharyngeal secretions were collected and multiplex reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR)/polymerase chain reactions (PCR) were performed to detect respiratory viruses. If there were any positive RT-PCR/PCR results, viral cultures were proceeded for confirmation. Respiratory viruses were identified in 49.6% of 296 patients. The detection rates were as follows: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was the most commonly detected in 52.7% (87/165), human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in 15.8%, human corona virus (hCoV) in 5.5%, adenovirus in 9.7%, human bocavirus (hBoV) in 5.5%, parainfluenza virus (PIV) in 3.6%, rhinovirus (RV) in 4.2%, and the influenza virus in 3% of the patients with ALRIs. The consistent rate of positive results between RT-PCR and viral culture was 92% (105/114). Using our methods to detect viral causes seemed to be acceptable for the national surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections in infants and children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the utility of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in patients with clinically evident acute appendicitis and to compare the test characteristics of overall clinical impression, Alvarado scores, and MDCT in suspected appendicitis. METHODS A prospective observational cohort study was conducted in two urban emergency departments (ED). Consecutive patients with suspected acute appendicitis were clinically evaluated by an emergency physician who was asked to determine whether appendicitis was clinically evident or not. Elements of the Alvarado scores were collected and all patients then underwent MDCT and a decision to operate, observe, or discharge the patients was made by a surgeon. The final diagnosis was based on surgical pathology or clinical follow-up. The test characteristics of clinical impression, Alvarado scores and MDCT were then calculated and the rates at which acute appendicitis was falsely diagnosed based on clinical impression and MDCT were compared using McNemar's test. RESULTS Of 157 study patients, 71 were considered to have clinically evident appendicitis before MDCT and 91 had findings of acute appendicitis on MDCT. 19 of the 71 patients with clinically evident appendicitis did not have appendicitis. 14 of 52 patients with an Alvarado score > or = 8 also did not have appendicitis. Three of 91 patients with acute appendicitis based on MDCT did not have appendicitis. The specificities of clinical impression and Alvarado score > or = 8 were 71.6% and 79.1%, respectively, and these were significantly lower than that of MDCT (95.5%, p<0.05). CONCLUSION The performance of abdominal MDCT in patients with a high degree of clinical suspicion for acute appendicitis reduces the number of false positives and has the potential to reduce negative appendectomies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Central bisectionectomy, which involves the removal of the central hepatic segments (IVA, IVB, V, VIII) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is performed to reduce the volume of resected liver and to overcome the problem of insufficient future residual volume. METHODS Twenty-seven patients with HCC underwent central bisectionectomy from January 1998 to April 2007 in one hospital. The surgical techniques, clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes were reviewed. RESULTS The median operating time was 330 min. Twelve patients developed postoperative complications and two died. The most common complication, occurring in five patients, was bile duct injury leading to biloma or bile leakage. Median follow-up was 19.1 (range 1.4-102.2) months and eight patients developed a recurrence. Twenty-four patients were alive at the time of writing. CONCLUSION Although biliary complications occur somewhat frequently, central bisectionectomy in centrally located HCC can be performed safely to preserve liver volume.

Abstract
Particles that are embedded in fluid membranes or plates can induce bending if they impose a nonzero angle of contact. This bending mediates complicated effective particle-particle interactions. In the absence of tension, these interactions are nonpairwise additive and can result in clusters of particles with specific configurations that give rise to zero total membrane bending energy. Here, we consider an infinite periodic lattice of such membrane inclusions. Upon summing the nonpairwise interactions within a regular lattice, we find an unexpected infinite number of periodic lattices that preserve zero membrane bending energy. Elliptically shaped membrane inclusions further increase the phase space of this degeneracy.

Abstract
Sibutramine is known to induce cardiovascular side effects such as tachycardia, vasodilation, and hypertension. The present study was aimed to examine the effects of sibutramine on action potential of guinea pig papillary muscle, recombinant hERG currents (IhERG), and inward currents (INa and ICa) of rat ventricular myocytes. Sibutramine at 30 μg/mL induced a shortening of action potential duration (APD) of guinea pig papillary muscle; on average, APD30 and APD90 were shortened by 23% and 17% at a stimulation rate of 1 Hz, respectively. Sibutramine suppressed the following currents: IhERG (IC50:2.408 ± 0.5117 μg/mL), L-type Ca current (IC50:2.709 ± 0.4701 μg/mL), and Na current (IC50:7.718 ± 1.7368 μg/mL). Sibutramine blocked IhERG, ICa, and INa in a concentration-dependent manner. In conclusion, sibutramine exerted a shortening effect on APD in guinea pig papillary muscle through its more powerful blocking effects on ICa and INa rather than IhERG.

Abstract
Background Blood–brain barrier (BBB) breakdown is an early event in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). In a previous study we have found a direct stabilization of barrier characteristics after treatment of bovine brain capillary endothelial cells (BCECs) with human recombinant interferon-β-1a (IFN-β-1a) in an in vitro BBB model. In the present study we examined the effect of human recombinant IFN-β-1a on the barrier properties of BCECs derived from four different species including humans to predict treatment efficacy of IFN-β-1a in MS patients. Methods We used primary bovine and porcine BCECs, as well as human and murine BCEC cell lines. We investigated the influence of human recombinant IFN-β-1a on the paracellular permeability for 3H-inulin and 14C-sucrose across monolayers of bovine, human, and murine BCECs. In addition, the transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) was determined in in vitro systems applying porcine and murine BCECS. Results We found a stabilizing effect on the barrier characteristics of BCECs after pretreatment with IFN-β-1a in all applied in vitro models: addition of IFN-β-1a resulted in a significant decrease of the paracellular permeability across monolayers of human, bovine, and murine BCECs. Furthermore, the TEER was significantly increased after pretreatment of porcine and murine BCECs with IFN-β-1a. Conclusion Our data suggest that BBB stabilization by IFN-β-1a may contribute to its beneficial effects in the treatment of MS. A human in vitro BBB model might be useful as bioassay for testing the treatment efficacy of drugs in MS.

Abstract
The PCDD/DFs and coplanar PCBs (co-PCBs) in sediment samples from Gwangyang Bay in South Korea was investigated. The total concentration of dioxins and their toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ; calculated with the WHO 2005 Toxic Equivalency Factors) value in the surface sediment of the outer site (261 pg g(-1) TOC, 4.4 pg-TEQ g(-1)) were 3-fold higher than the inner site (90 pg g(-1) TOC, 1.1 pg-TEQ g(-1)) in the Bay. The dioxin in the sediment samples was found to come from a mixture of the impurities of pentachlorophenol (PCP), chloronitrofen (CNP) and combustion based on the result of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). These dioxin sources have been influenced by the characterization associated with this region which was both an agricultural-centered and industrial-centered area. According to principal component analysis (PCA) related to the Kow values for the congener-specific composition of co-PCBs in the sediment core, the Kanechlor (KC)-500 and the atmospheric deposition were identified as the possible sources. The maximum burden in the sediment core was 1.3 kg for 1967-1974 and the total burdens of PCDD/DFs and co-PCBs in the sediment core were estimated to be 6.6 kg during the past 50 years. The cumulative burdens of dioxin are still increasing in Gwangyang Bay.

Abstract
AIMS Screening and partial characterization of a bacteriocin produced by Pediococcus pentosaceus K23-2 isolated from Kimchi, a traditional Korean fermented vegetable. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 1000 lactic acid bacteria were isolated from various Kimchi samples and screened for the production of bacteriocin. Pediocin K23-2, a bacteriocin produced by the Pediococcus pentosaceus K23-2 strain, showed strong inhibitory activity against Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteriocin activity remained unchanged after 15 min of heat treatment at 121 degrees C or exposure to organic solvents; however, it diminished after treatment with proteolytic enzymes. The bacteriocin was maximally produced at 37 degrees C, when the pH of the culture broth was maintained at 5.0 during the fermentation, although the optimum pH for growth was 7.0. The molecular weight of the bacteriocin was about 5 kDa according to a tricine SDS-PAGE analysis. CONCLUSIONS Pediococcus pentosaceus K23-2 isolated from Kimchi produces a bacteriocin, which shares similar characteristics to the Class IIa bacteriocins. The bacteriocin is heat stable and shows wide antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, especially L. monocytogenes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Pediocin K23-2 and pediocin K23-2-producing P. pentosaceus K23-2 could potentially be used in the food and feed industries as natural biopreservatives, and for probiotic application to humans or livestock.
