Endolymphatic stromal myosis with autoradiographic observation

A biopsy case of endolymphatic stromal myosis, a rare neoplasm of the uterus, which occurred in a 33-year-old female was described. The histology was typical and resembled stromal cells of proliferative phase endometrium. The tumor extended in the endometrium and diffusely infiltrated into the myometrium and the parametrium. However, 3H-thymidine labeling index was low suggesting slow growth of the tumor.

Pseudosarcomatous carcinoma of the esophagus--reference to its histogenesis

A case of pseudosarcomatous carcinoma of the esophagus with metastasis to lymph node was presented and the literature was reviewed briefly. Transition from carcinomatous to sarcomatous picture was noted and the presence of tonofibrils and desmosomes was demonstrated by electron microscope in the cells with sarcomatous features. These findings suggested an epithelial origin of the sarcomatous component in pseudosarcomatous carcinoma.

[On the surgical treatment of cerebellar infarction (author's transl)]

Recently we have experienced two cases of acute uncomplicated cerebellar infarction which had been surgically treated. Onset of the disease in both cases was an attack of vertigo with nausea and vomiting, followed by the signs of an expanding lesion in the posterior fossa. There were thirty-one surgically treated cases and only six were fatal so far as we have reviewed cases reported in the literature. The clinical pictures of cerebellar vascular accident are typical in most cases and those of cerebellar infarction are similar to those of cerebellar hemorrhage. These two are frequently indistinguishable on the clinical as well as angiographic grounds, however, CT-scan may be of great value in the differential diagnosis. It is important to realize the cerebellar infarction is also a surgical lesion and not to spend valuable time in differentiating cerebellar infarction from cerebellar hemorrhage. Low mortality rate and low morbidity in cerebellar infarction adequately treated surgically confirm importance for early exploration.

[Origination of casting porosity on high fused dental alloys by use of Bio-X X-ray unit (MRO-10R) (author's transl)]

Experiments were carried out clarify internal defects in dental casting with high fused dental alloys, as cobalt-chromium alloy or nickel-chromium alloy by use of Bio-X X-ray unit (MRO-10R for dental castings), exploited by KAWAHARA and TSK international corporation. Satisfactory radiographic observations were obtained with the following results; 1. In any of castings, a large amount of porosity was found on X-ray clearly. 2. On the castings in this experiment, porosity, round and bubble like in shape was markedly observed in the location right below the sprue attachment and its neighborhood. But in regions far from sprue, porosity was decreased, it came gradually to be present on the surface of castings. 3. Radiographically some defects were of a clack type and a shrinkage type in castings, although castings seemed to be quite sound in appearance. These types of defects were considered to become a weak point when external force was applied. 4. In regard to the completeness of castings, especially large round shape, clack type and shrinkage porosity can be prevented by a rapid removal of the air or gas from a mold and by improving the casting system to obtain better efficiency.

Antiviral activity of tobacco smoke condensate on encephalomyocarditis infection in mice

A water-soluble nontumorigenic acidic fraction of tobacco smoke condensate of cigarettes has been found to have antiviral activity against encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus infection in mice. The portion of lower molecular weight was inhibitory to the growth of EMC virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, reovirus type 2, vaccinia virus, and poliovirus type 2, but not against adenovirus type 12, in KB cell cultures. The cigarette smoke agent did not induce serum interferon although it protected mice from EMC disease by pretreatment.

Comparative study of the primary structures of cytochrome b5 from four species

The primary structures of human, bovine, and chicken cytochrome b(5) have been determined and compared with that of the previously studied rabbit protein. One peptide containing 31 amino acid residues and another containing 10 were found common to all four species. The substitutions of amino acids between species could be accounted for mainly by single base exchange, with a few exceptional double base exchanges for the chicken. Results for bovine cytochrome b(5) differ significantly from those previously reported for calf cytochrome b(5).
