Abstract
AIM: To study the inflammatory microenvironment and expression of chemokines in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in nude mice.
METHODS: CBRH-7919 HCC cells were injected into the subcutaneous region of nude mice. Beginning two weeks after the challenge, tumor growth was measured every week for six weeks. The stromal microenvironment and inflammatory cell infiltration was assessed by immunohistochemistry in paired tumor and adjacent peritumoral samples, and macrophage phenotype was assessed using double-stain immunohistochemistry incorporating expression of an intracellular enzyme. A chemokine PCR array, comprised of 98 genes, was used to screen differential gene expressions, which were validated by Western blotting. Additionally, expression of identified chemokines was knocked-down by RNA interference, and the effect on tumor growth was assessed.
RESULTS: Inflammatory cell infiltrates are a key feature of adjacent peritumoral tissues with increased macrophage, neutrophil, and T cell (specifically helper and activated subsets) infiltration. Macrophages within adjacent peritumoral tissues express inducible nitric oxide synthase, suggestive of a proinflammatory phenotype. Fifty-one genes were identified in tumor tissues during the progression period, including 50 that were overexpressed (including CXCL1, CXCL2 and CXCL3) and three that were underexpressed (CXCR1, Ifg and Actb). RNA interference of CXCL1 in the CBRH-7919 cells decreased the growth of tumors in nude mice and inhibited expression of CXCL2, CXCL3 and interleukin-1β protein.
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that CXCL1 plays a critical role in tumor growth and may serve as a potential molecular target for use in HCC therapy.

Abstract
Microemulsion-based organogels (MBGs) were effectively employed for the immobilization of four commonly used lipases. During the asymmetric hydrolysis of ketoprofen vinyl ester at 30 °C for 24 h, lipase from Rhizomucor miehei and Mucor javanicus immobilized in microemulsion-based organogels (RML MBGs and MJL MBGs) maintained good enantioselectivities (eep were 86.2% and 99.2%, respectively), and their activities increased 12.8-fold and 7.8-fold, respectively, compared with their free forms. They gave higher yields compared with other lipase MBGs and exhibited better enantioselectivity than commercial immobilized lipases. Immobilization considerably increased the tolerance to organic solvents and high temperature. Both MJL MBGs and RML MBGs showed excellent reusability during 30 cycles of repeated 24 h reactions at 30 °C (over 40 days). The system maintained yields of greater than 50%, while the ees values of RML MBGs and MJL MBGs remained nearly constant at 95% and 88%, respectively.

Abstract
Jia-Yuan-Qing pill (JYQP) composed of Porcellio laevis Latreille, Corydalis Rhizoma and Radix Cynanchi Paniculati at a ratio of 9:7:7 has been found to be an effective analgesic agent. The present study aimed to evaluate the safety, addictive potential and anti-cancer pain activity of JYQP in a rat model. During the 6-month chronic toxicity test, no significant changes in general behavior, defecation, postural abnormalities, dietary or water intake or blood biochemical parameters were observed in male and female rats. Although a high dose of JYQP (5 g/kg) caused swelling of the liver, spleen and kidney in male and female rats, no pathological changes were observed in all organs examined via hematoxylin and eosin staining. The analgesic effect of JYQP on bone cancer pain was successfully confirmed in a rat model of Walker 256 cell-induced bone cancer. In contrast to morphine, in a physical dependence test, JYQP produced no withdrawal symptoms following chronic administration. The data from this study provide experimental evidence supporting the clinical use of JYQP as an effective, safe and non-addictive agent for the treatment of bone cancer pain.

Abstract
Achalasia is a prototypic esophageal motility disorder with complications including aspiration-pneumonia, esophagitis, esophageal-tracheal fistula, spontaneous rupture of the esophagus, and squamous cell carcinoma. However, achalasia is rarely associated with esophageal stones and ulcer formation that lead to upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Here, we report the case of a 61-year-old woman who was admitted to our department after vomiting blood for six hours. Physical examination revealed that the patient had severe anemia and mild palpitation in the upper abdomen. CT revealed lower esophageal dilatation and esophageal wall thickening, and an emergency upper endoscopy showed that the esophagus was substantially expanded by a dark round stone, with multiple ulcers on the esophageal wall and a slit in the cardiac mucosa with a large clot attached. The patient’s history included ingestion of 1 kg hawthorn three days prior. The acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding was caused by Mallory-Weiss syndrome associated with achalasia and an esophageal stone. For patients with achalasia, preventing excessive ingestion of tannins is crucial to avoid complications such as bleeding and rupture.

Abstract
This study investigated the changes in peripheral benzodiazepine receptors (PBRs) in the penumbra after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, and examined the effects of astragaloside IV (AST) on PBRs in rats. Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a sham operation group, a model group, and three AST treatment groups. Cerebral ischemic models were induced by the clue-blocked method. Neurological deficits were examined. The animals were sacrificed after 2 h of ischemia and 24 h of reperfusion, and mitochondria from the penumbra were purified. PBR density (Bmax) and affinity were measured by radioligand assays. Mitochondrial [(3)H]PK11195 binding was correlated with neurological deficits in rats. Compared to the model group, the 10 mg/kg AST group, 40 mg/kg AST group, and 100 mg/kg AST group had fewer neurological deficits. The effects in the 40 mg/ kg group did not significantly differ from the effects in the 100 mg/ kg group. Compared to the model group, the 10 mg/kg AST group, 40 mg/kg group, and 100 mg/kg group had a decreased Bmax in the penumbra. The Bmax decreased in the 40 mg/kg AST group and in the 100 mg/kg AST group compared with the 10 mg/kg group. The Bmax and neurological deficits in the 40 mg/kg did not significantly differ from those in the 100 mg/kg group. By contrast, the AST-treated rats showed no significant changes in the binding parameter equilibrium dissociation constant compared with those in the sham operation group and the model group. AST protects ischemic brain tissue by inhibiting PBR expression after cerebral ischemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a method for detecting 3 common toxigenic molds (Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium) based on non-modified magnetic beads coupled with multiple real-time PCR (NMB-multiple qPCR). METHODS The primers and genus-specific probes were designed based on the rDNA sequences to develop a multiple real-time PCR using non-modified magnetic bead to enrichment of fungal spores. The sensitivity, specificity and repeatability of this assay were evaluated. RESULTS The detection limit of this assay for spiked samples was 10(4) CFU/g, demonstrating a 10-fold greater detection sensitivity of this assay than that of real-time PCR. The NMB-multiple qPCR assay also showed good specificity and reproducibility and yielded comparable results with those by traditional colony counting method for spiked samples (P>0.05). CONCLUSION NMB-multiple qPCR assay we established allows rapid and sensitive detection of common mycotoxigenic fungi in paprika.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the characteristics of complex chromosomal rearrangement (CCR) in Chinese male carriers and its influence on male fertility. METHODS Using the G band technique, we conducted karyotype analysis on the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 1,625 Chinese males with reproductive problems. We also searched CNKI and Wanfang database for CCR-related literature published between January 1984 and November 2013, followed by statistical analysis on the CCR characteristics and reproduction-related data of the CCR carriers. RESULTS Two CCR carriers were found among the 1,625 males and another 47 cases identified from the databases. Among the 49 CCR carriers, there were 17 three-way exchange cases (34.7%), 17 double two-way exchange cases (34.7%), and 15 exceptional cases (30.6%), with no statistically significant differences in the incidence of the three types (P > 0.05). Azoospermia- or oligospermia-induced infertility was found in 19 (38.8% ) of the CCR carriers. A total of 87 pregnancies were achieved in the other 30 (61.2%), among which spontaneous abortion occurred in 75.9% (66/87), dead fetus and malformed infant death in 9.2% (8/87), and phenotypically normal offspring in 14.9% (13/87). Recurrent abortion was associated frequently with breakpoints on CCR-involved chromosomes 6, 7, 8, 11, and 16, while dyszoospermia mostly with breakpoints on CCR-involved chromosomes 10 and 14. The breaking occurred more than 3 times at 1p22, 1q25, 2q31, 5p13, 5q35, 6q23, 8q13, and 20p13. Moreo- ver, the breakpoints at 2q31, 5q35, and 8q13 were particularly related to recurrent abortion, while that at 1p22 only to dyszoospermia. CONCLUSION CCR is extremely rare. Male CCR carriers are often identified through reproductive problems and have high risks of infertility and abnormal pregnancy and a very low rate of normal newborns. In addition, chromosomes and breakpoints involved in CCR may affect the fertility of male CCR carriers, and some particular chromosomal breakpoints may play a key role in gametogenesis.

Abstract
This study aimed to estimate changes in HSF3 and HSP70 mRNA expression in stress-sensitive tissues of 2 chicken breeds during acute heat stress. Lingshan chickens (LSC) and White Recessive Rock (WRR) (24 chickens of each breed) were randomly divided into 4 groups (0, 2, 3, and 6 h of heat treatment). With increasing heat treatment time, both HSF3 and HSP70 expression first declined and then showed a significant increase in both breeds. However, HSP70 expression decreased in the heart following 6 h of heat treatment, whereas HSF3 expression continued to increase. After 2 h of heat treatment, HSF3 expression was significantly higher in the brain and leg muscle of LSC compared to WRR (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). In comparison, HSP70 expression was significantly higher in the liver and leg muscle of WRR compared to LSC (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). After 3 h of heat treatment, HSF3 expression was significantly higher in the brain and leg muscle of LSC compared to WRR (P < 0.01). In comparison, HSP70 expression was significantly higher in the liver and heart of LSC compared to WRR (P < 0.01). These results indicate that the expression of HSF3 and HSP70 mRNA in LSC and WRR exhibit species-specific and tissue-specific differences during heat treatment.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of intracoronary application of tirofiban on platelet alpha-granule membrane protein (GMP-140) and myocardial perfusion levels during emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A total of 70 patients who accepted emergency PCI treatment were randomly divided into tirofiban and control groups. We determined GMP-140 and troponin I (cTnI) levels before and 12 h after surgery, as well as N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide levels 1 and 7 days after surgery in the two groups. The results showed that GMP-140 and cTnI levels were significantly (P < 0.01) lower in the tirofiban group than in the control group 12 h after operation (17.99 ± 1.01 vs 24.56 ± 1.96 μg/L and 50.96 ± 2.20 vs 58.69 ± 2.34 ng/mL, respectively). The D-value of the N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide levels between 1 and 7 days after operation was significantly higher in the tirofiban group than in the control group (894.19 ± 90.91 vs 829.50 ± 84.18 pg/mL; P < 0.01). The intracoronary application of tirofiban during emergency PCI clearly reduced the GMP-140 level, inhibited the activation function of platelets, improved myocardial perfusion, and helped recover cardiac function in patients.

Abstract
Numerous studies have indicated that rising ozone (O3) in the troposphere significantly decreased the photosynthesis and the activity of Rubisco enzyme. So it can be inferred that the N uptake and distribution within the plants could be affected by elevated O3. In this study, ten greening woody species, widely distributed in subtropical China, were exposed to charcoal-filtered air (CF, less than 20 nL · L(-1)) and elevated O3 (E-O3, mean concentration of 150 nL · L(-1)) in open top chambers. The results showed that E-O3 significantly reduced the leaves biomass in Liquidamba formosana by 20.9%, the stem biomass in Liriodendron chinense by 21.4%, the root biomass in L. formosana and L. chinense by 24.2% and 32.5%, respectively. E-O3 significantly affected the N concentration in the stem but not those in leaves and root. The N uptakes in the whole tree (Nlu), the leaves and the root were significantly affected by E-O3. Compared to CF, E-O3 significantly reduced the Nlu in L. chinense by 28.4% and Schima superba by 22.7% but significantly increased the Nlu in Neolitsea sericea by 15.5%. Elevated O3 concentration had no significant influence on N distribution within the plants across the selected 10 tree species.

Abstract
Aims Multiple studies have investigated the prognostic role of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) for patients with heart failure (HF), but the results have been inconsistent. The aim of the present study was to estimate the impact of RDW on the prognosis of HF by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods and Results The Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were searched up to November 16, 2013 to identify eligible cohort studies. The quality of each study was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). The association between RDW, either on admission or at discharge, and HF outcomes (all-cause mortality [ACM], heart transplantation, cardiovascular mortality, and rehospitalization, etc.) were reviewed. The overall hazard ratio (HR) for the effect of RDW on ACM was pooled using a random-effects model, and the publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots and Eggers' tests. Seventeen studies, with a total of 18288 HF patients, were included for systematic review. All eligible studies indicated that RDW on admission and RDW at discharge, as well as its change during treatment, were of prognostic significance for HF patients. The HR for the effect of a 1% increase in baseline RDW on ACM was 1.10 (95% confidence interval: 1.07–1.13), based on pooling of nine studies that provided related data. However, publication bias was observed among these studies. Conclusions HF patients with higher RDW may have poorer prognosis than those with lower RDW. Further studies are needed to explore the potential mechanisms underlying this association.

Abstract
Tropospheric ozone (O3) has been assumed the most phytotoxic air pollutant and the snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is known to be an ozone-sensitive species. Two genotypes (R123, ozone-tolerance, S156, ozone-sensitivity) of snap bean were explored in three places. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the snap bean was influenced under the current ambient ozone concentration. The findings indicated that the leaves of bean grown at Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES), Chinese Academy of Sciences and ChangPing showed visible ozone symptoms under the ambient ozone concentration, and the averaged ozone injury proportion in S156 was 23.5% higher than R123 during the entire growth season. The ozone damage to the snap bean depends on the plant growing stages. The injury symptoms appeared just after flowering, increased from the stages of flowering to pod formation, and reached the maximum at the stages of pod maturation. The ratio of S156/R123 in pod yield was 0.48, and 0.24 and 0.73 in the RCEES, ChangPing and Harbin, respectively. The ratio close to 1 was assumed that the plant growth is not affected by ozone, and the lower ratio is, the more damage caused by ozone. Obviously, the current ambient ozone concentration of Beijing area has significantly caused the yield loss of snap bean.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the roles of the chemotactic factor, chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), and its receptor, chemokine receptor type 2 (CCR2), in the hippocampus of rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. In total, 24 Sprague-Dawley rats, weighting 250–300 g, were randomly divided into three groups (n=8): Sham-operated (C group), cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R group) and propofol-intervention (P group) groups. The rats were sacrificed at 6 h after the ischemia/reperfusion surgery, and the brains were obtained to isolate the hippocampus. The mRNA expression levels of CCL2 and CCR2 in the hippocampus were analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, while the protein expression levels of CCL2 and CCR2 were determined by western blot analysis. The expression levels of CCL2 and CCR2 in the procerebrum were markedly elevated in the I/R and P groups at 6 h after the ischemia/reperfusion surgery when compared with the C group (P<0.05). In addition, the mRNA expression levels of CCL2 and CCR2 decreased significantly in the P group as compared with that in the I/R group (P<0.05). Therefore, CCL2 and CCR2 may be involved in the mechanisms underlying cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, and propofol may protect the brain through regulating the expression of CCL2 and CCR2.

Abstract
AIM To explore a simple and low-cost self-made disposable flexible iris retractor and study its clinical efficacy and safety in small pupil phacoemulsification. METHODS Polyproplyene suture and scalp acupuncture were used to make iris retractor. A prospective study were carried on 50 patients (50 eyes) with a maximally dilated pupil size of 2.5-4.0 mm which underwent phacoemulsification using this self-made iris retractor. Another 50 cases of phacoemulsification with normal pupil size sever as control group. The mean operation time, ultrasound time and ultrasonic power, volume of irrigation fluid were documented intraoperatively. The visual acuity, pupil size and complication were observed on 1d, 1wk, 1mo and 1y after operation. Corneal endothelial cell was measured at 1mo postoperatively. RESULT Pupils could be expanded to approximately 4.5-5.5 mm with our self-made iris retractor in operation. No serious postoperative complication was found. Most (88%) of the pupils returned round or oval shape, light reflex restored to varying degrees at the first day after surgery. Best corrected visual acuity stabilized in 37 eyes (74%) at one day, in 43 eyes (86%) at one week, in 44 eyes (88%) at one month and 46 eyes (92%) at one year. Compared with the control, more time was needed to complete the operation in the small pupil group. There was no significant difference of the mean ultrasound time, ultrasonic power, volume of irrigation fluid required and corneal endothelial cell loss in 1mo follow up between the two groups. CONCLUSION Our self-made disposable flexible iris retractor could be easy obtained preoperatively or intraoperatively. It performed both safety and efficacy in our clinical trials. This simple self-made device has shown economic and practical values, especially in primary care hospital of the less developed districts.

Abstract
Soybean cultivar Dongsheng No. 1 [Glycine max (L.) Mer.] was exposed to charcoal-filtered air (CFA), non-filtered air (NFA) and non-filtered air with ozone addition (NFA + O3) in nine open-top chambers. Individual yield and yield components at maturity, C, N concentration in leaf and seed, gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence and pigments content at the full bloom stage were measured with an AOT40 value of 10.6 microL x L(-1) x h during the growing season. Compared to CFA, NFA reduced individual yield and 100-seed weight by 4.5% and 4% respectivley, while NFA + O3 treatment significantly reduced each of them by 34% and 18%. However, plant height, node numbers of main stem, pods per plant and number of seeds per pod remained unchanged by O3 addition. Leaf C, N concentrations at the seed filling stage under NFA + O3 also significantly increased by 3% and 26%, respectively, while the CN ratio significantly decreased by 18%. Moreover, compared to CFA and NFA, NFA + O3 caused significant reductions in the photosynthetic parameters at the full bloom stage, e.g. significant declines in net photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, fluorescence parameters of F'(v)/F'(m) and phi(PS II). It is proposed that lower photosynthetic rates, reduced photochemical efficiency in PS II and the decline in 100-seed weight might be the main reasons contributing to the lower individual yield of soybean plant by elevated O3.

Abstract
Asymmetry is required by most numerical simulations of stellar core-collapse explosions, but the form it takes differs significantly among models. The spatial distribution of radioactive (44)Ti, synthesized in an exploding star near the boundary between material falling back onto the collapsing core and that ejected into the surrounding medium, directly probes the explosion asymmetries. Cassiopeia A is a young, nearby, core-collapse remnant from which (44)Ti emission has previously been detected but not imaged. Asymmetries in the explosion have been indirectly inferred from a high ratio of observed (44)Ti emission to estimated (56)Ni emission, from optical light echoes, and from jet-like features seen in the X-ray and optical ejecta. Here we report spatial maps and spectral properties of the (44)Ti in Cassiopeia A. This may explain the unexpected lack of correlation between the (44)Ti and iron X-ray emission, the latter being visible only in shock-heated material. The observed spatial distribution rules out symmetric explosions even with a high level of convective mixing, as well as highly asymmetric bipolar explosions resulting from a fast-rotating progenitor. Instead, these observations provide strong evidence for the development of low-mode convective instabilities in core-collapse supernovae.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The hypotheses tested were: the cumulative survival rates of dentin caries lesion-free pits and fissures of ART conventional high-viscosity glass-ionomer sealants with light-curing (high-intensity LED) and glass-carbomer sealants are higher than those of conventional ART sealants and resin-composite sealants after 4 years. METHODS The randomized controlled clinical trial covered 405 children (mean age 8-years). Three dentists placed sealants in pits and fissures of high caries-risk children. Evaluation by two independent evaluators was conducted after 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4 years. The Kaplan-Meier survival method, ANOVA and t-test were used in data analyses. RESULTS 1304 first permanent molars were sealed. 12.3% of children and 15.4% of sealants dropped out. 46 re-exposed pits and fissures, 39 (occlusal) 7 (free smooth surfaces), in 42 children developed a dentin carious lesion. The cumulative survival of dentin caries lesion-free occlusal pits and fissures in ART plus LED group (98%) was statistically significantly higher than in the resin-composite group (96.4%) and in the glass-carbomer group (94.5%). The cumulative survival of dentin caries lesion-free occlusal pits and fissures in the glass-carbomer group was statistically significantly lower than that in the conventional ART group (97.3%). For the free smooth surfaces, there was no statistically significantly difference among the four sealant groups. SIGNIFICANCE Light-cured ART conventional high-viscosity glass-ionomer sealants prevented the occurrence of dentin cavities best.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contribution of contrast-enhanced sonography in the diagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma up to 3 cm and analyze its dynamic enhancement patterns. METHODS Forty-five patients (29 male and 16 female; mean age ± SD, 61.3 ± 10.7 years; range, 38-79 years) with a preliminary diagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma by contrast-enhanced sonography were retrospectively analyzed. For each nodule, the enhancement pattern, level, and dynamic change during the arterial, portal, and late phases after the injection of a sulfur hexafluoride microbubble contrast agent were evaluated. RESULTS Among the 35 patients with a histopathologic diagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, 18 nodules showed hyperenhancement during the arterial phase, and 17 showed hypoenhancement. Heterogeneous, peripheral, and partial enhancement were found in 24, 8, and 2 nodules, respectively. However, only 1 nodule showed homogeneous enhancement. During the portal phase, 34 nodules showed hypoenhancement, and 1 showed isoenhancement. Hypoenhancement during the late phase was observed in all cases. Ten patients had a misdiagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. CONCLUSIONS Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma up to 3 cm may display a variety of arterial enhancement patterns on contrast-enhanced sonography. However, some other nodules may manifest findings similar to those of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
