Abstract
We analyze a mode-locked regime in Kerr frequency combs generated in nonlinear microresonators. Using damped driven nonlinear Schrödinger equations we show that the combs can produce subpicosecond optical pulses when the resonators are characterized with a small enough anomalous group velocity dispersion. We provide an analytical solution of the problem for the case of small damping.

Abstract
We report on generation of a 20 nm wide, 35 GHz repetition rate optical frequency comb in a magnesium fluoride whispering gallery mode resonator pumped with 2 mW of 1543 nm light. The high efficiency of comb generation is associated with the small anomalous group velocity dispersion of the resonator. Growth dynamics of the comb is studied and compared with earlier theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Swine influenza viruses H1N1 and H3N2 have been reported in the swine population worldwide. From June 2008 to June 2009, we carried out serological and virological surveillance of swine influenza in the Hubei province in central China. The serological results indicated that antibodies to H1N1 swine influenza virus in the swine population were high with a 42.5% (204/480) positive rate, whereas antibodies to H3N2 swine influenza virus were low with a 7.9% (38/480) positive rate. Virological surveillance showed that only one sample from weanling pigs was positive by RT-PCR. Phylogenetic analysis of the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase genes revealed that the A/Sw/HB/S1/2009 isolate was closely related to avian-like H1N1 viruses and seemed to be derived from the European swine H1N1 viruses. In conclusion, H1N1 influenza viruses were more dominant in the pig population than H3N2 influenza viruses in central China, and infection with avian-like H1N1 viruses persistently emerged in the swine population in the area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To understand the advancements in and barriers to the implementation of measures to improve basic public health services in an urban Chinese community. STUDY DESIGN A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed and analysed using thematic content analysis. METHODS In-depth interviews were undertaken with the directors of the management centres for community health services in 15 of the 18 districts in Beijing from December 2008 to February 2009. Content analysis of the data was completed in May 2009. RESULTS Fifteen types of free basic public health services had been delivered in Beijing. Some were supplied at a low level. An average of £2.38 per person per year was provided for inhabitants since 2008, but demand for funding far exceeded monies available. Teams consisting of general practitioners, community nurses and public health specialists delivered these services. The number of practitioners and their low levels of skill were insufficient to provide adequate services for community residents. Respondents gave recommendations of how to resolve the above problems. CONCLUSIONS In order to improve the delivery of basic public health services, it is necessary for Beijing Municipal Government to supply clear and detailed protocols, increase funding and increase the number of skilled practitioners in the community health services.

Abstract
We report on the observation of a mode-locked laser generated with a crystalline whispering gallery mode resonator pumped with a continuous wave laser. Optical pumping of the resonator generates an optical frequency comb with phase locked components at the Raman offset of the resonator host material. Phase locking of the modes is confirmed via measurement of the radio-frequency beat note produced by the comb on a fast photodiode. Neither the conventional Kerr comb nor hyperparametric oscillation is observed when the comb is present. We present a theoretical explanation of the effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Carbon monoxide releasing molecule-3 (CORM-3) is a newly reported compound that has shown anti-inflammatory effects in a number of cells. In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of CORM-3 on concurrent tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)- and interleukin (IL)-1β-induced expression of adhesion molecules on human gingival fibroblasts (HGF). MATERIAL AND METHODS HGF were cultured from the explants of normal gingival tissues. Cells were costimulated with TNF-α and IL-1β in the presence or absence of CORM-3 for different periods of time. The expression of adhesion molecules, nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) and phosphorylated p38 was studied using western blotting. RT-PCR was applied to check the expression of the adhesion molecules at the mRNA level. The activity of NF-κB was analysed using a reporter gene assay. RESULTS CORM-3 inhibited the up-regulation of intercellular adhesion molecule 1, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 and endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecule in HGF after costimulation with TNF-α and IL-1β, which resulted in the decreased adhesion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells to these cells. Sustained activation of the NF-κB pathway by costimulation with TNF-α and IL-1β was suppressed by CORM-3, which was reflected by a reduced NF-κB response element-dependent luciferase activity and decreased nuclear NF-κB-p65 expression. CORM-3 inhibited MAPK p38 phosphorylation in response to stimulation with proinflammatory cytokines. CONCLUSION The results of this study bode well for the application of CORM-3 as an anti-inflammatory agent to inhibit NF-κB activity and to suppress the expression of adhesion molecules on HGF, which suggests a promising potential for CORM-3 in the treatment of inflammatory periodontal disease.

Abstract
We demonstrate a miniature self-injection locked distributed-feedback laser using resonant optical feedback from a high-Q crystalline whispering-gallery-mode resonator. The linewidth reduction factor is greater than 10,000, with resultant instantaneous linewidth of less than 200 Hz. The minimal value of the Allan deviation for the laser-frequency stability is 3 x 10(-12) at the integration time of 20 micros. The laser possesses excellent spectral purity and good long-term stability.

Abstract
We demonstrate a second-order bandpass filter using a single gradient index lens (GRIN) coated with mirrors. The filter becomes possible because of the residual and externally introduced small birefringence of the GRIN lens material. We show that the filter function can be trimmed by mechanical strain of the lens. Applications of the filter in microwave photonics are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop and evaluate an applicable model for a community health service (CHS) in an underdeveloped area of China that ensures efficient, convenient and affordable primary healthcare access for all residents. STUDY DESIGN The current study was carried out in Puyang, a typical medium-sized city in central-eastern China. Based on the healthcare requirements of the residents in Puyang, a CHS network was set up and its operation was evaluated from 1999 to 2006. The system is characterized by its focus on community health education (CHE). METHODS Firstly, 8231 residents, selected at random, were surveyed to investigate the healthcare requirements of the local residents. Meanwhile, the operation of the pre-existing healthcare resources was investigated in Puyang. Based on the information gained, a network-based CHS system was proposed and established, with CHE as the major focus. This study compared CHS operation prior to and after establishment of the network. Finally, an analytic hierarchy process based evaluation model was applied to evaluate the operation of the CHS network. RESULTS There was a high prevalence (86.98 per thousand) of chronic diseases among the residents who participated in this investigation. The majority (84.39%) of the residents who had healthcare requirements resorted to professional health care; the other residents did not have access to health services. Among those residents who sought professional treatment, 71.3% visited primary healthcare institutions. This information reflects the enormous requirement for a CHS in primary health care but the lack of accessibility among the residents; this motivated the authors to establish a system to solve the problem. The improvement in CHS operation after the network was established suggests the importance of a network for optimizing the primary healthcare system. The improvement was indicated by better understanding of the residents regarding the CHS, and enhanced capability of self-monitoring for chronic diseases such as hypertension after the network was established. Moreover, the residents' knowledge of health care was significantly increased and, accordingly, the incidence of health risk behaviour was reduced after the network was established. Furthermore, the CHE index between 1999 and 2006 showed good correlation (r=0.988, p<0.005) with the CHS index, suggesting the important role of CHE in CHS development. CONCLUSIONS A network-characterized CHS system was established in Puyang, and improved the primary healthcare situation. This study provides a feasible model for the development of a CHS in medium and small cities in underdeveloped parts of China.

Abstract
We report the development and demonstration of an X-band voltage-controlled photonic oscillator based on a whispering gallery mode resonator made of an electro-optic crystalline material. The oscillator has good spectral purity and wide, agile, linear tunability. We have modified the existing theoretical model of the opto-electronic oscillator to describe the performance of our tunable oscillator and have found a good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the measurement results. We show that the device is promising for higher-frequency applications where high-performance tunable oscillators with wide tunability do not exist.

Abstract
We show that a linear chain of circular macroscopic resonators coupled in parallel demonstrates the phenomena of "superabsorption" and superradiance. Both the frequency spectrum of the transmitted light through the resonator chain and the decay rate of the resonator chain being prepared in a proper initial state are proportional to the number of resonators in the chain, N, and the intensity of the emitted radiation grows as N(2). The spectral bandwidth, the growth of the decay rate, and the intensity are restricted by the dispersion of the waveguides connecting the resonators.

Abstract
We propose a technique for realization of a high-contrast, tunable, low-insertion-loss notch filter using polarization selectivity of whispering-gallery-mode resonators. We demonstrate a 10 MHz filter with 5.5 dB insertion loss and 45.5 dB of in-band rejection. The measured rejection value is limited by the finite (3 kHz) linewidth of our laser. We show that the filter can potentially have tunable bandwidth without significant rejection modification.

Abstract
We report on the development of a new class of widely tunable resonant single-sideband electro-optical modulators based on interaction of different mode families of a crystalline whispering gallery mode resonator with an externally applied rf field. The tunability comes from the different response of mode families to either the temperature change or the voltage applied to the resonator.
