Abstract
Vertebral hemangioma is a relatively frequent but rarely symptomatic tumor. Physiologic changes during pregnancy may lead to spinal cord compression due to tumor expansion. We report a case of vertebral hemangioma during pregnancy: a 28-year-old woman, third trimester, third gestation, consulted for paraplegia of rapid onset; Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion of the 9th thoracic vertebra; a cesarean section was done, followed by laminectomy with partial symptom relief; pathology showed a benign vertebral hemangioma and treatment was completed with radiotherapy.

Abstract
The electron-dense cores of regulated secretory granules in the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila are crystal lattices composed of multiple proteins. Granule synthesis involves a series of steps beginning with protein sorting, followed by the condensation and precise geometric assembly of the granule cargo. These steps may to various degrees be determined by the cargo proteins themselves. A prominent group of granule proteins, in ciliates as well as in vertebrate neuronal and endocrine cells, are acidic, heat-stable, and bind calcium. We focused on a protein with these characteristics named granule lattice protein 1 (Grl1p), which represents 16% of total granule contents, and we have now cloned the corresponding gene. Mutants in which the macronuclear copies of GRL1 have been disrupted continue to synthesize dense-core granules but are nonetheless defective in regulated protein secretion. To understand the nature of this defect, we characterized mutant and wild-type granules. In the absence of Grl1p, the sorting of the remaining granule proteins appears normal, and they condense to form a well-defined core. However, the condensed cores do not demonstrate a visible crystalline lattice, and are notably different from wild type in size and shape. The cellular secretion defect arises from failure of the aberrant granule cores to undergo rapid expansion and extrusion after exocytic fusion of the granule and plasma membranes. The results suggest that sorting, condensation, and precise granule assembly are distinct in their requirements for Grl1p.

Abstract
The contribution of the ciliary body to the origin of vitreous proteins was investigated in rabbits by incubating explants of this eye component under novel conditions. At the end of incubations for up to 21 h, the tissues were processed histologically and were shown to be in an excellent state of morphological preservation. When radioactive amino acids and fucose were added to the culture medium, protein and glycoprotein synthesis and secretion were detected using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) plus fluorography. The origin of these secretory products was traced by autoradiography to the ciliary epithelium. When samples of vitreous bodies - injected intravitreally with the same radioactive precursors - were run beside samples of the tissue culture media, comigration of at least 8 radioactively labelled bands including the one previously identified as transferrin was detected. This indicates that some vitreous proteins may be secreted by the ciliary body and that cultures of explants of ciliary body-iris are useful tools for studies on vitreous protein secretion.

Abstract
Twenty-nine Mycobacterium reference strains representing 10 species and 60 mycobacterial cultures isolated from sputum specimens were studied. These cultures were grown in Bactec 7H12B medium (Becton Dickinson and Co., Paramus, N.J.) supplemented with oleic acid-albumin-dextrose-catalase enrichment broth (Becton Dickinson and Co., Cockeysville, Md.). The cultures were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography for their fatty acids, secondary alcohols, and mycolic acid cleavage products. All of the clinical isolates could be identified by comparing their gas-liquid chromatography profiles with those of the reference strains. The data indicate that this method significantly shortens the turnaround time and could be used for the early detection and identification of mycobacterial species.

Abstract
Plasma fibronectin (Fbn) was assessed daily in 9 men admitted to the cardiology care unit for uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In a control group of twenty healthy men, plasma Fbn was 0.290 +/- 0.0417 g/l-1 (mean +/- SD). In 6 hypertensive AMI patients, Fbn levels were increased to a maximum of 0.461 +/- 0.0294 g/l-1 at day five (5.5 +/- 0.84 days) and returned to the range of the control group values 56 +/- 32.8 hours afterwards. Three normotensive patients had higher Fbn results without returning to the control group range at the end of the hospitalization (0.734 +/- 0.0209 gl-1). Plasma Fbn could in part be implicated in the repair process and/or in the limitation of the cardiac necrosis extension. Moreover, it seems that a link exists between plasma Fbn kinetics and hypertension and/or normotension during uncomplicated AMI.

Abstract
The Roche Amplicor Mycobacterium tuberculosis PCR test (RMtb-PCR) was compared with mycobacterial culture, with the BACTEC 460 system and inoculation on Lowenstein-Jensen media. Results were interpreted with an adjusted "gold standard" incorporating clinical diagnosis. A total of 1,480 clinical specimens from 1,155 patients, including tissues and fluids, as well as 141 specimens which demonstrated a positive growth index on the BACTEC 460 system were assessed. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of RMtb-PCR compared with the adjusted gold standard for clinical specimens were 79, 99, 93, and 98%, respectively. In smear-positive specimens, the sensitivity of RMtb-PCR was 98% versus 53% for smear-negative specimens. When RMtb-PCR was performed two times per week, PCR results were available an average of 21 days before the culture results. For specimens demonstrating a positive growth index on the BACTEC 460 system, RMtb-PCR had a sensitivity and specificity of 98 and 100%, respectively. This study demonstrates the value of a commercial nucleic acid amplification kit for rapid diagnosis of M. tuberculosis, particularly in smear-positive specimens or BACTEC culture-positive specimens.

Abstract
The authors report four cases of spinal cord compression (three at cervical level and one at dorsal level) due to vertebral osteosclerosis secondary to chronic fluoride intoxication. Roentgenograms showed typical diffuse densification of vertebral bodies, calcifications of bony insertions of many ligaments, discs and interosseous membranes. Urinary fluoride was markedly increased in two cases. In the other two cases the bone biopsy was suggestive of skeletal fluorosis. Spinal computed tomography showed severe cord compression due to posterior osteophytes. Good improvement was observed after surgical decompression in one case. Fluorosis was described as a consequence of endemic exposure to high fluoride content in soil and natural ground water in North Africa. Fluorotic myelopathy was due to bone excrescences mainly affecting the spine.

Abstract
Cardiac hydatic cysts are rare and represent 0.5 to 2% of all hydatic cysts in humans [1, 2]. They are usually found in the left or right ventricle, and exceptionally in the interventricular septum. An exclusively pericardia hydatic cyst is excessively rare. The case reported here emphasizes: That this hydatid cyst of the pericardium remained asymptomatic until rupture. The role of echocardiography as a diagnostic tool. The superiority of MRI to CT Scan in the establishment of a precise preoperative diagnosis.

Abstract
The records of 37 patients with histopathologically confirmed adenoid cystic carcinoma, who presented to McGill University's Department of Otolaryngology between 1956 and 1990, were reviewed to determine factors influencing local failure, distant metastases, and survival. Of the 37 cases, 12 developed local recurrences. Local failure was seen an average of 3.5 years following initial treatment, 62% of which were seen prior to 2 years. No statistically significant advantage was found for the use of postoperative radiotherapy in the prevention of local recurrences. Thirteen cases presented with or subsequently developed distant metastases. The mean interval between initial treatment and the appearance of distant disease was 8.1 years. A comparison of survival in patients with negative versus positive surgical margins was carried out. Survival at 15 years with negative margins remained 100%, while with positive margins, only 35% survived. Disease-free survival with negative and positive margins at 10 years was 80% and 31.1%, respectively. The effect of positive margins on survival was statistically significant with a p values between .01 and .001. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the importance of negative surgical margins with regard to survival. The results suggest that negative margins at initial resection significantly improve long-term disease-free survival.

Abstract
Alvinella pompejana is a polychaetous annelid that inhabits active deep-sea hydrothermal vent sites along the East Pacific Rise, where it colonizes the walls of actively venting high-temperature chimneys. An abundant, morphologically diverse epibiotic microflora is associated with the worm's dorsal integument, with a highly integrated filamentous morphotype clearly dominating the microbial biomass. It has been suggested that this bacterial population participates in either the nutrition of the worm or in detoxification of the worm's immediate environment. The primary goal of this study was to phylogenetically characterize selected epibionts through the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences. Nucleic acids were extracted from bacteria collected from the dorsal surface of A. pompejana. 16S rRNA genes were amplified with universal bacterial primers by the PCR. These genes were subsequently cloned, and the resulting clone library was screened by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis to identify distinct clone types. The restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis identified 32 different clone families in the library. Four of these families were clearly dominant, representing more than 65% of the library. Representatives from the four most abundant clone families were chosen for complete 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. These gene sequences were analyzed by a variety of phylogenetic inference methods and found to be related to the newly established epsilon subdivision of the division Proteobacteria. Secondary structural model comparisons and comparisons of established signature base positions in the 16S rRNA confirmed the placement of the Alvinella clones in the epsilon subdivision of the Proteobacteria.
