Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum homocysteine levels are a risk factor in cardiovascular disease. Knowledge on how dietary factors might affect these levels is therefore of interest. OBJECTIVE To evaluate serum homocysteine levels in a group of elderly people and analyse the effect of pyridoxine, vitamin B12 and folic acid intakes on these levels. DESIGN The study subjects were 130 independently-living elderly people over the age of 65. A dietetic study was performed using a 7-day food record. Serum homocysteine levels were determined by HPLC. RESULTS Mean pyridoxine, vitamin B12 and folate intakes were 67.2+/-16.8%, 392.8+/-549.2% and 84.5+/-28.3% of recommended values respectively. With regard to sex, differences were seen only for vitamin B12 intake (9.1+/-12.7 microg/day in men, and 6.5+/-8.8 microg/day in women). Some 93.6% of subjects showed pyridoxine intakes below those recommended, as did 17.6% with respect to vitamin B12 and 72.8% with respect to folic acid. Homocysteine levels were 12.4 micromol/l (12.6+/-3.7 micromol/l in men and 12.2+/-7.9 micromol/l in women) (P<0.05). No significant differences were seen in homocysteine levels between subjects with lower than recommended intakes of pyridoxine or vitamin B12 and those with better intakes. However, subjects with folic acid intakes below 200 microg/day showed higher homocysteine levels (13.0+/-6.7 micromol/l) than did subjects with more adequate intakes (10.9+/-4.1 micromol/l) (P<0.05). CONCLUSION The diet of the study subjects might be improved, especially with respect to pyridoxine and folic acid. Raising the intake of the latter might be especially useful in controlling homocysteine levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) has been demonstrated to be a useful tool in the determination of additives in polymeric materials. This paper describes the determination of some citrates and benzoates in poly(vinyl chloride) blended with 33-34% of plasticizer using off-line SFE followed by gas chromatography. Experimental factors affecting SFE have been studied by gravimetric analysis, followed by analysis of the extracts using a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector. The extraction process is governed by the solubility of the plasticizers in the supercritical fluid or by their diffusion through the polymer matrix, which depend on the pressure and temperature used. Maximum extraction (>99%) is obtained at pressures and temperatures higher than 40 MPa and 80 degrees C, respectively. Due to purge losses, the collection efficiency of plasticizers into a liquid solvent ranges from 85 to 90%. The applicability of the SFE method is demonstrated using real samples and comparing the results with those obtained by conventional Soxhlet extraction.

Abstract
In order to improve the specificity and sensitivity of the techniques for the human anisakidosis diagnosis, a method of affinity chromatography for the purification of species-specific antigens from Anisakis simplex third-stage larvae (L3) has been developed. New Zealand rabbits were immunized with A. simplex or Ascaris suum antigens or inoculated with Toxocara canis embryonated eggs. The IgG specific antibodies were isolated by means of protein A-Sepharose CL-4B beads columns. IgG anti-A. simplex and -A. suum were coupled to CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B. For the purification of the larval A. simplex antigens, these were loaded into the anti-A. simplex column and bound antigens eluted. For the elimination of the epitopes responsible for the cross-reactions, the A. simplex specific proteins were loaded into the anti-A. suum column. To prove the specificity of the isolated proteins, immunochemical analyses by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were carried out. Further, we studied the different responses by ELISA to the different antigenic preparations of A. simplex used, observing their capability of discriminating among the different antisera raised in rabbits (anti-A. simplex, anti-A. suum, anti-T. canis). The discriminatory capability with the anti-T. canis antisera was good using the larval A. simplex crude extract (CE) antigen. When larval A. simplex CE antigen was loaded into a CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B coupled to IgG from rabbits immunized with A. simplex CE antigen, its capability for discriminate between A. simplex and A. suum was improved, increasing in the case of T. canis. The best results were obtained using larval A. simplex CE antigen loaded into a CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B coupled to IgG from rabbits immunized with adult A. suum CE antigen. When we compared the different serum dilution and antigenic concentration, we selected the working serum dilution of (1/4)00 and 1 microg/ml of antigenic concentration.

Abstract
The effect of different carbon sources on the expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae of the SWA2 alpha-amylase gene from Schwanniomyces occidentalis was studied from constructs containing its 5' region (-223 to +15), which were fused in-frame to the lacZ gene coding sequence. Maximal expression was achieved with the non-fermentable substrates ethanol and/or glycerol, whereas lower levels were found with maltose or galactose. In contrast, glucose repressed it, even in the presence of any of these other carbon sources. Deletion analyses of the -233 to -85 SWA2 promoter region permitted the identification of two fragments involved in both glucose repression and ethanol activation. A possible region required for cAMP regulation was localised. The SWA2 promoter contains a MIG1-binding GC box whose deletion caused a five-fold increase in the glucose-repressed reporter expression. Despite this, expression of the SWA2 promoter was not MIG1-dependent.

Abstract
The practice of single use devices (SUD) recycling raises public health concerns, primarily with regard to the potential risks of infection and device malfunction. These concerns have led to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revision of the present regulations. The purpose of our work is to identify different material parameters that could contribute to the health risks associated with the practice of reprocessing PVC catheters for use in other patients. Ethylene oxide hospital-reprocessed central venous catheter samples were obtained from the stock of a health-care institution. One device trademark was selected, and samples that had been used 8 and 24 times were compared with new ones. In order to determine the total percentage of extractables, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was used, and off-line gas-chromatography-flame-ionization detection (GC-FID) was employed for identification and quantitation of bis-(2-ethyl hexil)phthalate (DEHP). Storage modulus (E') and dissipation factor (tan delta curves were obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Successive catheter recycles produced increased plasticizer loss, increased glass transition temperature (T(g)) and E', widening of tan delta curve with a simultaneous shift to higher temperature, small decrease of weight average molecular weight (M(w)), increased surface roughness, and increased appearance of surface grooves (severe damage). The magnitude of biomaterial parameter changes measured suggests that reuse could alter the original device performance. Examples of possible adverse clinical events include leaching of toxic agents, device rigidization or breakage, increased catheter protein retention, or the promotion of bacterial adhesion by device topography modification.

Abstract
Conditions inducing the development of holobasidia with terminal basidiospores in wild-type and astaxanthin mutant strains of Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous were reexamined. Important factors for the development of holobasidia were the incubation temperature and the medium composition. A temperature of 9 degrees C was demonstrated to enhance holobasidia formation. Minimal growth medium with glucose as sole carbon source at concentrations between 80 and 120 mM, and ammonium nitrate with concentrations of 28 mM gave optimal results. A period of 20 or more days was needed for the formation of holobasidia with basidiospores. Additionally, mutant strains of X. dendrorhous were observed to have different abilities to produce holobasidia and strains obtained after protoplast fusion, which have been called fusant in this study, to have an increased capacity to form holobasidia.

Abstract
AIMS/BACKGROUND The innervation pattern of the guinea-pig liver is similar to that of the human liver. However, many aspects of the distribution of the neuronal isoform of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the guinea-pig liver and its colocalization with neuropeptides remain to be elucidated. METHODS The distribution of nNOS was studied in fixed guinea-pig liver by light microscopic immunohistochemistry. Confocal analysis was used to determine its colocalization with neuropeptide Y (NPY) or calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). RESULTS nNOS-immunoreactive (nNOS-IR) nerves were observed in relation to hilar and interlobar vessels and in Glisson's capsule. A few nNOS-IR ganglia were observed in the extrahepatic bile duct and close to the interlobar portal triads. In addition, nNOS-IR fibers were located in the interlobular portal triads and pervading the parenchyma. Moreover, nNOS-IR nerves were demonstrated for the first time in the larger central veins and in the hepatic vein. nNOS-NPY and nNOS-CGRP colocalizations were detected in the fibromuscular layer of the bile duct and periductal plexus, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These results support the phylogenetic conservation of the nNOS-IR hepatic innervation and its possible contribution to the regulation of hepatic blood flow and certain hepatic functions.

Abstract
The present work describes, for the first time, the changes that take place in the leaf apoplastic antioxidant defenses in response to NaCl stress in two pea (Pisum sativum) cultivars (cv Lincoln and cv Puget) showing different degrees of sensitivity to high NaCl concentrations. The results showed that only superoxide dismutase, and probably dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), were present in the leaf apoplastic space, whereas ascorbate (ASC) peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and glutathione (GSH) reductase (GR) seemed to be absent. Both ASC and GSH were detected in the leaf apoplastic space and although their absolute levels did not change in response to salt stress, the ASC/dehydroascorbate and GSH to GSH oxidized form ratios decreased progressively with the severity of the stress. Apoplastic superoxide dismutase activity was induced in NaCl-treated pea cv Puget but decreased in NaCl-treated pea cv Lincoln. An increase in DHAR and GR and a decrease in ASC peroxidase, MDHAR, ASC, and GSH levels was observed in the symplast from NaCl-treated pea cv Lincoln, whereas in pea cv Puget an increase in DHAR, GR, and MDHAR occurred. The results suggest a strong interaction between both cell compartments in the control of the apoplastic ASC content in pea leaves. However, this anti-oxidative response does not seem to be sufficient to remove the harmful effects of high salinity. This finding is more evident in pea cv Lincoln, which is characterized by a greater inhibition of the growth response and by a higher rise in the apoplastic hydrogen peroxide content, O(2)(.-) production and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, and CO protein levels. This NaCl-induced oxidative stress in the apoplasts might be related to the appearance of highly localized O(2)(.-)/H(2)O(2)-induced necrotic lesions in the minor veins in NaCl-treated pea plants. It is possible that both the different anti-oxidative capacity and the NaCl-induced response in the apoplast and in the symplast from pea cv Puget in comparison with pea cv Lincoln contributes to a better protection of pea cv Puget against salt stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We recently obtained evidence demonstrating that cultured bovine endothelial cells contain cytosolic proteins that form complexes with the 3'-untranslated region of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) mRNA and are associated with its destabilization. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of such proteins and eNOS expression in hypercholesterolemic rabbits as an in vivo model of endothelial dysfunction. METHODS AND RESULTS Endothelium-dependent relaxation to acetylcholine and the calcium ionophore A23187 was reduced in aortic segments from hypercholesterolemic rabbits compared with controls. Treatment of hypercholesterolemic rabbits with cerivastatin (0.1 mg. kg body wt(-1). d(-1)) restored endothelium-dependent relaxation. Aortic eNOS expression was reduced in hypercholesterolemic rabbits and was accompanied by enhanced binding activity of a 60-kDa cytosolic protein and reduced stability of eNOS mRNA. Cerivastatin treatment upregulated eNOS expression and reduced the interaction of the cytosolic protein with the 3'-untranslated region of eNOS mRNA. Mononuclear cells from hypercholesterolemic rabbits also showed a marked reduction of eNOS expression and eNOS mRNA stability and an increase in binding activity of the cytosolic protein, which were also prevented by cerivastatin treatment. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate the presence of a 60-kDa protein that binds to eNOS mRNA and reductions in eNOS expression in both vascular wall and mononuclear cells that are prevented by cerivastatin.

Abstract
To determine if the expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) during spermatogenesis can compromise the fertility of transgenic animals, we have produced mouse transgenic lines expressing GFP in the testis under the control of the potent immediate early promoter and enhancer region of the human cytomegalovirus (CMV). GFP expression was detected in the germ cells with no apparent effect on the fertility of any of the five transgenic lines studied. We demonstrate that the CMV promoter is transcriptionally active in the testes of mice aged 7 days. However, protein could be visually detected only after day 10. GFP was not found either in mature spermatozoa or in Sertoli cells, but it was evident in round spermatids from seminiferous tubules and in cytoplasmic drops of spermatozoa from the epididymis. We also detected GFP in spermatogonia expressing c-kit, which indicates that GFP expression driven by the CMV promoter takes place during the proliferative phase of spermatogenesis. The expression of GFP during spermatogenesis did not affect the fertility of transgenic mice.

Abstract
To evaluate the possible involvement of glutamate AMPA receptor-mediated mechanisms in levodopa-induced motor fluctuations, we investigated the effects of LY293558, a competitive AMPA receptor antagonist, on levodopa-induced motor alterations in rats with unilateral 6-OHDA lesion. Acute and chronic administration of LY293558 was studied to evaluate the possible reversion or prevention of these levodopa effects. In the first set of experiments, rats were treated with levodopa (25 mg/kg with benserazide, twice daily, i.p.) for 22 days and on day 23 LY293558 (5 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered immediately before levodopa. In the second set of experiments, rats were treated daily for 22 days with levodopa and LY293558 (5 mg/kg, twice daily, i.p.). In the third set of experiments, the effect of LY293558 (5 mg/kg, i.p.) administration on selective dopamine D-1 (SKF38393, 1.5 mg/kg, s.c.) and D-2 agonist (quinpirole, 0.1 mg/kg, i.p.)-induced rotational behavior after daily levodopa treatment was studied. The duration of the rotational behavior induced by chronic levodopa decreased by 30% after 22 days. Acute administration of LY293558 on day 23 reversed this effect. The group of animals that were chronically treated with levodopa and LY293558 did not show the decrease in this motor response duration. Chronic levodopa treatment attenuated the rotational response to the D-1 agonist SKF38393 and increased the response to the D-2 agonist quinpirole. LY293558 did not reverse the effect of levodopa on rotational behavior induced by the D-1 agonist but significantly reduced the rotational response to the D-2 agonist in levodopa-treated animals by 40%. Our results demonstrate that an AMPA receptor antagonist reverses and prevents levodopa-induced motor alterations in parkinsonian rats and that this effect on motor fluctuations induced by chronic levodopa is probably due to a modulation of the indirect output pathway of the basal ganglia.

Abstract
In order to improve the specificity and sensitivity of the techniques for the diagnosis of human anisakidosis, a method of affinity chromatography for the purification of species-specific antigens from Anisakis simplex third-stage larvae (L3) has been developed. New Zealand rabbits were immunized with A. simplex or Ascaris suum antigens or inoculated with Toxocara canis embryonated eggs. The IgG-specific antibodies were isolated by means of protein A-Sepharose CL-4B bead columns. IgG anti-Anisakis simplex, anti-Ascaris suum and anti-T. canis were coupled to CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B. For the purification of the larval Anisakis simplex antigens, it was loaded into the anti-A. simplex column and bound antigens were eluted. For the elimination of the epitopes responsible for the cross-reactions, the A. simplex-specific proteins were loaded into the anti-Ascaris suum and anti- T. canis columns. To prove the specificity of the isolated proteins, immunochemical analyses by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting were carried out. Likewise, immunoaffinity columns were prepared using specific IgG from patients with Anisakis simplex sensitization, previously diagnosed by fluoro-enzymo-immunoassay. The protein patterns of antigen after purification by the human columns were similar to those obtained using the rabbit columns.

Abstract
Disparity for the minor histocompatibility antigen HA-1 between patient and donor has been associated with an increased risk of acute graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) after allogeneic human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-identical sibling donor stem cell transplantation (SCT). However, no data concerning the impact of such disparity on chronic GvHD, relapse or overall survival are available. A retrospective multicentre study was performed on 215 HLA-A2-positive patients who received an HLA-identical sibling SCT, in order to determine the differences in acute and chronic GvHD incidence on the basis of the presence or absence of the HA-1 antigen mismatch. Disease-free survival and overall survival were also analysed. We detected 34 patient-donor pairs mismatched for HA-1 antigen (15.8%). Grades II-IV acute GvHD occurred in 51.6% of the HA-1-mismatched pairs compared with 37.1% of the non-mismatched. The multivariate logistic regression model showed statistical significance (P: 0.035, OR: 2.96, 95% CI: 1.07-8.14). No differences were observed between the two groups for grades III-IV acute GvHD, chronic GvHD, disease-free survival or overall survival. These results confirmed the association between HA-1 mismatch and risk of mild acute GvHD, but HA-1 mismatch was not associated with an increased incidence of chronic GvHD and did not affect relapse or overall survival.

Abstract
Multiple factors are involved in thrombus formation and require complex and highly therapeutic strategies. Platelet activation plays a critical role in the genesis of acute coronary syndromes involving not only platelets but also endothelial cells, leucocytes and erythrocytes. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a vasoconstrictor that could participate in the thrombotic process. Platelets also express Ang II AT1 type receptors on their surface. Losartan is a non-peptidic inhibitor of AT1 receptors. It has been demonstrated that losartan reduced platelet aggregation induced by the thromboxane A2 (TXA2) analogue U46619. This effect was not observed with the losartan metabolite EXP 3174. The effect of losartan was assessed in binding studies in which losartan competitively inhibited the binding of [3H]U46619 to platelets in a dose-dependent manner. Irbesartan also inhibits the TXA2 receptor in platelets, an effect that was not obtained with the active form of candesartan, CV11974, and with valsartan. These results suggest that the structural requirements necessary to antagonize the TXA2/PGH2 platelet receptor may be different from those involved in AT1 receptor antagonism. The in vivo relevance of the in vitro findings has been confirmed by the fact that in vivo administration of losartan decreases P-selectin expression in platelets obtained from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Abstract
Olive stones (whole stones and seed husks in fragments) were processed by steam-explosion under different experimental conditions of temperature and time, 200-236 degrees C for 2-4 min, with or without previous acid impregnation with 0.1%, H2SO4 (w/w). This paper examines the solubilization of hemicelluloses and their molecular weight distribution. The subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis of the solid residue, using a preparation of cellulase, was also studied. The maximum yield of the pentosan recovered in the water solution was 63% pentose in the starting material for seed husk treated at 200 degrees C for 2 min (log R0 3.24) prior to acid-impregnation, or at 215 degrees C for 2 min (log R0 3.69) without acid, compared to 39% of the potential yield for whole stones pre-impregnated with acid under more severe conditions (at log R0 = 4.07). This indicates that the autohydrolysis of hemicellulose in seed husks when compared to whole stones is enhanced. The molecular weight distribution of profile sugars showed that the depolymerization of hemicelluloses is a function of the severity of the treatment. Steam-explosion improved the accessibility of the cellulose and increased the enzymatic hydrolysis yield after steam-explosion with respect to material without steam explosion (ball-milled material), although little increase in the extent of saccharification occurred when the alkali-soluble lignin was removed. Only when the substrate was post-treated with Na-chlorite was the enzymatic hydrolysis improved, the water-insoluble residue being almost completely hydrolyzed in 8 h of incubation.

Abstract
We tested the potential cytoprotective role of C-phycocyanin in rat cerebellar granule cell cultures. Cell death was induced by potassium and serum (K/S) withdrawal. Cell viability was studied using the neutral red assay and laser scanning cytometry with propidium iodide as fluorochrome. C-phycocyanin (1-3 mg/ml) showed a neuroprotective effect against 24 h of K/S deprivation in cerebellar granule cells. After 4 h K/S deprivation this compound (3 mg/ml) inhibited formation of reactive oxygen species, measured as 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein fluorescence, showing its scavenger capability. Pre-treatment with C-phycocyanin reduced thymidine incorporation into DNA below control values and reduced dramatically apoptotic bodies as visualized by propidium iodide, indicating inhibition of apoptosis induced by K/S deprivation. Flow cytometry studies, using propidium iodide in TritonX100 permeabilized cells, indicated that 24 h K/S deprivation acts as a proliferative signal for cerebellar granule cells, which show an increase in S-phase percentage and cells progressed into the apoptotic pathway. C-phycocyanin protected cerebellar granule cells from the apoptosis induced by deprivation. These results suggest that C-phycocyanin prevents apoptosis in cerebellar granule cells probably through the antioxidant activity. It is proposed that K/S deprivation-induced apoptosis could be due, in part, to an alteration in the cell cycle mediated by an oxidative stress mechanism.

Abstract
An amylolytic industrial yeast strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae containing the Schwanniomyces occidentalis SWA2 amylase gene was generated. The new strain contains DNA derived exclusively from yeast and expresses a high starch hydrolyzing activity. Yeast transformation was carried out by an integrative process targeted to a dispensable upstream region of the ILV2 locus, which determines sulfometuron resistance. The SWA2 enzyme was constitutively expressed under the ADH1 promoter. The growth, substrate utilization and fermentative capacity of this organism are described.

Abstract
The distribution of nitrergic nervous structures in the trout kidney was studied by peroxidase-linked ABC immunostaining procedures using a polyclonal antibody raised against the neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase. The nitrergic plexus reaches the kidney along the vasculature, mainly running with the postcardinal vein where nitrergic fibres, microganglia like cellular clusters and isolated neurones were detected. The atubular head-kidney only showed isolated nitrergic fibres close to the larger arteries. On the other hand, the collecting tubules, collecting ducts, large arteries and glomerular arterioles of the tubular middle and posterior trunks were innervated by nitrergic fibres even though immunoreactive neurones were also observed in close apposition to some tubular elements and large arteries. These results suggest that, according to morphofunctional differences between the fish and mammalian kidneys, nitrergic neural structures may be involved in the control of particular renal functions in the rainbow trout.

Abstract
In maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients, advanced age is a factor associated with relative hypoparathyroidism and an adynamic bone. However, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. The aim of the present study was to analyze whether the observed spontaneous decrease in protein intake in the elderly favors a better control of serum phosphorus (P) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. A cross-sectional study including 207 MHD patients (mean age, 60 +/- 14; 59% males; time on dialysis, 61 +/- 55 months) dialyzed 3.5 to 4.5 hours 3 times a week using bicarbonate hemodialysis from 6 Spanish hemodialysis centers was performed. In 95 patients, the nutrient intake was recorded over a 5-day period, and average daily ingestion of nutrients was calculated using a computerized diet analysis system. One-way analysis of variance showed that serum phosphorus and intact PTH decreased with age. In addition, patients with serum phosphorus lower than 4 mg/dL as compared with those with serum phosphorus greater than 4 mg/dL were older (68 +/- 9 v 58 +/- 15 years, P < 0.001), had a lower protein (0.86 +/- 0.3 v 1.05 +/- 0.4 g/kg body weight, P < 0.01) and caloric intake (21.9 +/- 7.4 v 25.7 +/- 8.3 kcal/Kg body weight, P < 0.01), and had lower PTH levels (102 +/- 155 v 290 +/- 345 pg/mL, P < 0.001). An inverse and significant correlation was observed between age and protein intake (r = -0.48; P < 0.01), caloric intake (r = -0.37, P < 0.01), serum phosphorus concentration (r = -0.40; P < 0.01), and PTH levels (r = -0.26; P < 0.01). Additionally, a significant positive correlation was found between serum phosphorus and PTH levels (r = 0.40; P < 0.01). The results obtained in the present study suggest that a lower serum phosphorus level due to spontaneous reduction of protein intake might contribute to the relative low PTH levels observed in elderly hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
An intensive study was designed to determine the activity of different radionuclides in water, including strontium-90 (90Sr), cesium-134 (134Cs), cesium-137 (137Cs), plutonium-239-240 (239+240Pu), and tritium (3H). Activity levels detected were between 0.6 and 21.3 mBq/L for 90Sr; less than 0.5, 1.4, and 327 Bq/L for 134Cs, 137Cs, and 3H, respectively; and between 0.14 and 21 microBq/L for 239+240Pu. Other nonradioactive parameters were measured including pH; dry residue: conductivity; calcium concentration, [Ca++]; magnesium concentration, [Mg++]; potassium concentration, [K+]; iron(II) and (III) concentration, [Fe2+,3+]; and ammonium concentration [NH4+]. Only the aquifer corresponding to the refrigeration reservoir of the nuclear power plant of Almaraz (Extremadura, Spain) showed greater-than-average concentrations of 3H and 239+240Pu compared with those found in the remaining aquifers. The greater presence of dissolved Fe in the waters analyzed clearly indicated greater activity associated with 90Sr, 137Cs, and 239+240Pu in dissolution. In addition, the water samples that were highly mineralized aided the dissolution of 90Sr and (to a lesser extent) 137Cs and made dissolution of 239+240Pu more difficult.
