Abstract
Pulmonary asbestosis is defined as bilateral diffuse interstitial fibrosis of the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos. Many occupations are at risk for asbestos exposure, particularly in the mining, milling, manufacturing, construction, shipbuilding, and automotive industries. Therefore, the prevalence of asbestosis should be fairly widespread. The diagnosis of asbestosis can be made on either clinical or pathological grounds. We recently encountered one case of asbestosis which was confirmed histologically. On HRCT, there was ground-glass opacity with irregular linear shadows, subpleural curvilinear lines and parenchymal bands. Neither plaque nor calcification were noted. The histologic findings observed on open-lung biopsy specimen were well in accord with those in HRCT. Many asbestos-coated bodies were present along with black dust.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare silicone versus acrylic foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in primary glaucoma triple procedure (PGTP). DESIGN Prospective, randomized. PARTICIPANTS A total of 79 eyes of 79 primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients in need of combined surgery were randomized to a silicone IOL group (36 eyes) and acrylic IOL group (43 eyes). INTERVENTION The study eyes underwent PGTP, which consisted of primary trabeculectomy, phacoemulsification, and posterior chamber IOL implantation. Adjunctive mitomycin C (MMC) (0.5 mg/ml for 1 minute) was used selectively only in patients with one or more risk factors for filtration failure of PGTP. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Snellen visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and number of glaucoma medications were measured, performed, or determined preoperatively and at regular intervals postoperatively. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the mean number of postoperative glaucoma medications at 1, 2, 3, 4-6, and 9-12 months and at last follow-up (P > 0.05); mean change in corrected visual acuity best attained (P = 0.315) or at last follow-up (P = 0.223) between the silicone and acrylic groups. Both groups had significant decreases in mean IOP and mean number of medications postoperatively at all times (P < 0.05). However, the postoperative IOP > 25 mmHg and IOP spike > 5 mmHg above preoperative IOP during the first month were significantly higher in the acrylic group (P = 0.026). The mean postoperative IOP at 1 month in the acrylic group was also significantly higher than the silicone group (14.1 +/- 5.0, 11.2 +/- 3.9, P = 0.005). Conversely, there were no significant differences in mean postoperative IOP at 2, 3, 4-6, and 9-12 months and at last follow-up between the silicone and acrylic groups (P > 0.05). Suture removal or release occurred significantly more frequently in the acrylic IOL group during the first month and the first 2 months (48.8% and 60.5%) than the silicone group (25.0% and 36.1%, P = 0.030 and 0.031, respectively). There were no significant differences in postoperative complications or surgical interventions between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS During the first year following the PGTP with selective use of MMC, there were no significant differences in the medical dependency or visual outcomes or complications between the silicone and acrylic groups. Both groups attained significant decreases in IOP postoperatively. However, the mean IOP was significantly higher in the acrylic than the silicone group at 1 month postoperatively, and postoperative IOP > 25 mmHg and IOP spike > 5 mmHg above preoperative IOP were significantly greater in the acrylic group. There were significantly more suture releases in the acrylic IOL group than the silicone IOL group in the first 2 months postoperatively.

Abstract
Intravascular lymphomatosis (IL) is a rare and generally fatal disease characterized by proliferation of large lymphoma cells almost exclusively within the lumen of small blood vessels. The skin and central nervous systems are typically affected, but involvement of other organs, such as lung, has been described. Predominant lung involvement without cutaneous and neurologic manifestation is very rare and difficult to diagnose. Originally considered as an endothelial disorder, IL has recently been reclassified as lymphoma. Most of the cases reported are of B cell lineage with a few cases of T cell type. We describe a case of the T-cell type IL manifested clinically as an interstitial lung disease without involvement of skin and central nervous systems. Immunohistochemical studies showed the T-cell nature of the neoplastic cells in open lung biopsy sample.

Abstract
We determined the serum concentrations of neuron-specific enolase (s-NSE) in rat pups of 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks of age and in adult rats that were subjected to lithium-pilocarpine status epilepticus (SE). Damage to brain regions was rated on a scale of 0 (no damage) to 5 (> 50% cell loss). Rat pups of 1-2 weeks of age had a higher baseline s-NSE than the adults. Following SE, 1 week old rat pups had no elevation of s-NSE and no histologic evidence of damage. At older ages the increases in NSE ranged from 18.9 +/- 0.8 ng/ml in the 2 week old (vs. 11.5 +/- 0.5 control) to 35.8 +/- 2.1 ng/ml in the 3 week old (vs. 12.1 +/- 0.8 control). In the adult rats s-NSE increased from 5.4 +/- 0.4 in the control animals to 30.4 +/- 1.3 after SE. The different brain regions examined had distinctive ontogenic profiles for SE-induced damage. Elevation of s-NSE after SE correlated with overall histologic evidence for damage.

Abstract
HslVU in Escherichia coli a new two-component ATP-dependent protease composed of two heat-shock proteins, the HslU ATPase and the HslV peptidase which is related to proteasome beta-type subunits. Here we show that the reconstituted HslVU enzyme degrades not only certain hydrophobic peptides but also various polypeptides, including insulin B-chain, casein, and carboxymethylated lactalbumin. Maximal proteolytic activity was obtained with a 1:2 molar ratio of HslV (a 250-kDa complex) to HslU (a 450-kDa complex). By itself, HslV could slowly hydrolyze these polypeptides, but its activity was stimulated 20-fold by HslU in the presence of ATP. The ATPase activity of HslU was stimulated up to 50% by the protein substrates, but not by nonhydrolyzed proteins, and this stimulation further increased 2-3-fold in the presence of HslV. Concentrations of insulin B-chain that maximally stimulated the ATPase allowed maximal rates of the B-chain hydrolysis. Furthermore, addition of increasing amounts of ADP or N-ethylmaleimide reduced ATP and protein or peptide hydrolysis in parallel. Thus, HslVU is a protein-activated ATPase as well as an ATP-dependent proteinase, and these processes appear linked. Surprisingly, the protein and peptide substrates do not compete with each other for hydrolysis. Lactacystin strongly inhibits protein degradation, but has little effect on peptide hydrolysis, while the peptide aldehydes are potent inhibitors of hydrolysis of small peptides, but have little effect on proteins. Thus, the functional requirements for ATP-dependent hydrolysis of peptides and proteins appear different.

Abstract
PURPOSE Visual field assessment is extremely important in glaucoma management, but interpretation is affected by the quality of the patient's performance. The authors have investigated the reliability of visual field performance by a randomly selected sample of the chronic glaucoma population at an urban tertiary care practice. METHODS Patient reliability in Humphrey automated visual field testing was studied in 106 randomly selected chronic open-angle glaucoma patient charts, which provided 768 tests (mean, 7.2 +/- 4.8 fields; range, 2-18 fields). Reliability criteria were established as less than 20% fixation losses, less than 33% false-negative error, and less than 33% false-positive error, as recommended by Humphrey Instruments, Inc (San Leandro, CA). RESULTS Patients performed reliably in 61% of right eye fields, 58% of left eye fields, and 59.5% overall. Of the 106 patients, only 35 (33%) were always reliable in both eyes, whereas 8 (7.5%) were always unreliable in both eyes. The most common cause of unreliability was fixation loss (39%), whereas false-positive error (5%) and false-negative error (9%) were less frequent. A more severely depressed mean deviation correlated significantly with poorer performance on the three reliability indices, with false-negative error having the greatest correlation, followed by fixation loss and false-positive error. Corrected pattern standard deviation correlated closely only with false-negative error. Prolonged test time also correlated with all three reliability indices. Age was a significant factor for fixation loss but not for false-negative or false-positive error. CONCLUSIONS The authors conclude that fewer than two thirds of the Humphrey visual fields were reliable with the authors' urban tertiary care population of patients with glaucoma. Relaxing the fixation loss criterion to less than 33% improved the rate of reliability to approximately 75%. The severity of glaucomatous visual field defects, test time, and age were identified as factors influencing the reliability of the Humphrey visual fields.

Abstract
An inexpensive microplate assay method was developed to determine ascorbic acid in human aqueous humor samples. The method is based on the selective oxidation of ascorbic acid at alkaline pH and determination of ascorbic acid and other reducing substances in samples with bicinchoninic acid/CuSO4 before and after the alkaline treatment. The two-point measurement eliminates the effect of interfering substances, such as glucose, uric acid and glutathione, which are stable at alkaline pH. The advantages of the method are that it requires small sample volumes and allows handling of a large number of samples simultaneously.

Abstract
The relationship between p53 overexpression and clinicopathologic variables in gastric cancer was evaluated using 304 paraffin-embedded gastric tumor tissues. DO7, a murine monoclonal antiserum to p53 protein, was used for the immunohistochemical analysis. Positive staining was found in 129 tumors (42.2% of all tumors). Overexpression of p53 was not associated with sex, location of the tumor in the stomach or the type of Borrman's tumor. The overexpression rate of p53 protein was 30.4% (28/92) in stage II and 47.6% (101/212) in stage III (p = 0.007). While there was no significant association between p53 protein accumulation and T stage, there was a significant association with N stage, i.e. p53 overexpression was 27.4% (17/62) in the node-negative group and 46.3% (112/242) in the node-positive group (p = 0.011). In 79 patients, in whom corresponding primary gastric tumor and regional lymph node metastases were available, overexpression was found in 34 (43%) primary tumors and in 38 (48.1%) node samples, with a concordance rate of 67.1% in terms of p53 expression. Mean numbers of regional lymph node involvement by the tumor were 6.1 in the group with p53 overexpression and 5.2 in the group showing no immunoreactivity (p = 0.051). These findings suggest that p53 overexpression is related to gastric cancer progression and that immunoreactivity in the metastatic lymph nodes show the dependency on p53 expression in the primary tumor.

Abstract
Seizures have been shown to regulate neurotrophin expression in adult mammalian brain. However, there has been some controversy as to whether seizures affect neurotrophin expression in very immature brain. In the present study, we have examined the effects of seizures induced by pilocarpine following lithium pretreatment or by kainic acid on the expression of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA in developing rat brain by in situ hybridization. In adult brain, lithium/pilocarpine treatment resulted in dramatic elevations of hybridization to BDNF cRNA in neocortical and limbic brain structures. In developing brain, lithium/pilocarpine induced elevations of BDNF mRNA in the hippocampus, piriform and entorhinal cortex as early as postnatal day 7 (P7). By P12, the pattern of enhanced expression was similar to that of the adult. Maximal elevations of hybridization were present 2 to 4 h following pilocarpine injection. Electrophysiological recording demonstrated that lithium/pilocarpine treatment resulted in electrographic seizures. Pretreatment with diazepam blocked the seizures as well as the elevation of BDNF mRNA. Kainic acid induced elevations of BDNF mRNA in the CA3 subfield of the hippocampal pyramidal cell layer, but not in other brain areas in pups as young as P7. These data indicate that seizures during the neonatal and early juvenile period of brain development induce elevated BDNF mRNA expression, and that different methods of seizure induction yield different patterns of elevations in hybridization. Furthermore, BDNF may be capable of playing a role in the development of seizure susceptibility in the immature brain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND . Lipases, a family of enzymes which catalyze the hydrolysis of triglycerides, are widely distributed in many organisms. True lipases are distinguished from esterases by the characteristic interfacial activation they exhibit at an oil-water interface. Lipases are one of the most frequently used biocatalysts for organic reactions performed under mild conditions. Their biotechnological applications include food and oil processing and the preparation of chiral intermediates for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure pharmaceuticals. Recent structural studies on several lipases have provided some clues towards understanding the mechanisms of hydrolytic activity, interfacial activation, and stereoselectivity. This study was undertaken in order to provide structural information on bacterial lipases, which is relatively limited in comparison to that on the enzymes from other sources. RESULTS . We have determined the crystal structure of a triacylglycerol lipase from Pseudomonas cepacia (PcL) in the absence of a bound inhibitor using X-ray crystallography. The structure shows the lipase to contain an alpha/beta-hydrolase fold and a catalytic triad comprising of residues Ser87, His286 and Asp264. The enzyme shares several structural features with homologous lipases from Pseudomonas glumae (PgL) and Chromobacterium viscosum (CvL), including a calcium-binding site. The present structure of PcL reveals a highly open conformation with a solvent-accessible active site. This is in contrast to the structures of PgL and PcL in which the active site is buried under a closed or partially opened 'lid', respectively. CONCLUSIONS . PcL exhibits some structural features found in other lipases. The presence of the Ser-His-Asp catalytic triad, an oxyanion hole, and the opening of a helical lid suggest that this enzyme shares the same mechanisms of catalysis and interfacial activation as other lipases. The highly open conformation observed in this study is likely to reflect the activated form of the lipase at an oil-water interface. The structure suggests that the interfacial activation of bacterial lipases involves the reorganization of secondary structures and a large movement of the lid to expose the active site. This is similar to the mechanism described for other well characterized fungal and mammalian lipases.

Abstract
The rate of synthesis of GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter, was determined in parietal cortex and hippocampus during SE induced by systemic administration of lithium (3 mEq/kg) followed 20 h later by pilocarpine (100 mg/kg) in 1-4-week-old rats. Our results show that the immature hippocampus is better capable of maintaining GABA synthesis in the face of SE at the earliest stages of development studied (74.1% of basal in 1-week-old) and that development results in a progressive decline in the ability to maintain GABA synthesis in the face of SE (44.1% of basal by 4 weeks) that may parallel the ontogeny of self-sustaining seizures. Our data describe an aspect of developmental GABA neurochemistry which may in part explain the relative resistance of the immature hippocampus to seizure spread and of certain types of seizure-induced damage.

Abstract
HslU is the ATPase component of the ATP-dependent HslVU protease in Escherichia coli. To gain an insight into the structure and function of HslU, site-directed mutagenesis was performed to generate a mutation in the ATP-binding site of the ATPase (i.e., to replace the Lys63 with Thr). Unlike the wild-type HslU, the mutant form (referred to as HslU/K63T) could not hydrolyze ATP or support the ATP-dependent hydrolysis of N-carbobenzoxy-Gly-Gly-Leu-7-amido-4-methyl coumarin by HslV. The wild-type HslU (a mixture of monomer and dimer) formed a multimer containing 6-8 subunits in the presence of either ATP or ADP, indicating that ATP-binding, but not its hydrolysis, is required for oligomerization of HslU. However, HslU/K63T remained as a monomer whether or not the adenine nucleotides were present. Furthermore, ATP or ADP could protect HslU, but not HslU/K63T, from degradation by trypsin. These results suggest that the mutation in the ATP-binding site results in prevention of the binding of the adenine nucleotides to HslU and hence in impairment of both oligomerization and ATPase function of HslU.

Abstract
The occurrence of ptosis after trabeculectomy has been a common postoperative complication. Many factors have been implicated in the development of postoperative ptosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of ptosis following trabeculectomy and whether or not it was influenced by combined cataract surgery, type of conjunctival flap, and previous intraocular surgery. We reviewed 386 eyes of 386 patients who underwent either trabeculectomy alone or trabeculectomy combined with cataract surgery, with greater than 6 month follow-up. Ptosis occurred in 10.7% (18 of 150 eyes) after trabeculectomy alone and in 12.7% (30 of 236 eyes) after trabeculectomy with combined cataract surgery (p = 0.96). The incidence of ptosis was 12.3% (10 of 81 eyes) after limbus-based conjunctival flap and 12.5% (38 of 305 eyes) after fornix-based conjunctival flap (p = 0.98). There was no significant difference in the incidence of ptosis between primary surgery eyes (12.5%, 34 of 273 eyes) and secondary surgery eyes (12.4%, 14 of 113 eyes) (p = 0.97). The incidence of ptosis after trabeculectomy was about 12% overall and not significantly influenced by combined cataract surgery, type of conjunctival flap or previous ocular surgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prerequisite for selective use of adjunctive mitomycin C (MMC) in primary glaucoma triple procedure (PGTP) is a better understanding of the prognostic factors. Therefore, the authors carried out the current study on the outcome of PGTP with and without adjunctive MMC to determine the prognostic factors for filtration failure of PGTP. METHODS The study patients consisted of 174 consecutive primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients undergoing PGTP. They were assigned randomly to either no adjunctive MMC (93 eyes of 93 patients) or adjunctive subconjunctival MMC (81 eyes of 81 patients) during the PGTP. After surgery, the patients were examined at regular intervals for visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP) control, medical therapy requirements, and complications. Filtration failure was determined according to two different criteria: (1) a less stringent set of criteria (criterion I) and (2) a more stringent set of criteria (criterion II). RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the groups with and without adjunctive MMC with respect to postoperative IOP, number of medications, and visual acuity outcome during mean follow-up (+/- standard deviation) of 25.1 +/- 5.5 months (P > 0.05 for each). However, there were prognostic factors for filtration failure in the control group but not in the MMC group. Black race, diabetes mellitus, preoperative IOP greater than or equal to 20 mmHg, and number of preoperative medications greater than two were found to be significant prognostic factors for filtration failure by criterion I. Black race, preoperative IOP greater than or equal to 20 mmHg and number of preoperative medications greater than 1 were significant prognostic factors for filtration failure by criterion II. CONCLUSION There was no statistically significant difference in the overall outcome of PGTP between control and MMC groups of nonselected patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Black race, diabetes mellitus (by criterion I only), preoperative IOP greater than or equal to 20 mmHg, and number of preoperative medications greater than 2 (by criterion I) or greater than 1 (by criterion II) were found to be significant independent prognostic factors for filtration failure of PGTP without adjunctive MMC but no with adjunctive MMC. The use of adjunctive subconjunctival MMC in PGTP may have to be selective, primarily in those patients with primary open-angle glaucoma with one or more of the prognostic factors for filtration failure.

Abstract
Ecotin, a homodimeric protein composed of 142 residue subunits, is a novel serine protease inhibitor present in Escherichia coli. Its thermostability and acid stability, as well as broad specificity toward proteases, make it an interesting protein for structural characterization. Its structure in the uncomplexed state, determined for two different crystalline environments, allows a structural comparison of the free inhibitor with that in complex with trypsin. Although there is no gross structural rearrangement of ecotin when binding trypsin, the loops involved in binding trypsin show relatively large shifts in atomic positions. The inherent flexibility of the loops and the highly nonglobular shape are the two features essential for its inhibitory function. An insight into the understanding of the structural basis of thermostability and acid stability of ecotin is also provided by the present structure.

Abstract
Transferrin binding protein (TfBP), a glycoprotein, is originally purified from the chicken oviduct. Recently, TfBP has been revealed as a novel transferrin binding protein, structurally related to the chicken heat shock protein 108. The physiological function of this protein, however, has not yet been established. Antiserum to TfBP was found to stain selectively transferrin- and iron-rich oligodendrocytes of the normal chicken brain, suggesting a role for this protein in connection with transferrin and iron storage in these cells. In this study, we further demonstrate a TfBP-immunoreactivity in the chicken respiratory tract mucosa, where transferrin is known to be present and have antioxidant and antibacterial properties. A strong TfBP immunoreactivity was revealed in certain regions of the respiratory tract. In the trachea and bronchi, TfBP-immunoreactive product was localized specifically to the mucous gland cells, whereas ciliated epithelial cells were negative. In the lung, TfBP immunoreactivity was mostly confined to the parabronchi and atria. The immunoreactive products were found in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells lining the parabronchial and atrial walls. These findings suggest that the presence of TfBP in the airway mucosa may be a necessary condition for transferrin concentration in the extracellular milieu of the respiratory tract.

Abstract
The ClpP component Clp protease from Escherichia coli has been crystallized and examined by X-ray crystallography and self-rotation function calculations. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group P2(1) with unit cell dimensions of a = 196.9 A, b = 104.3 A, c = 162.4 A and beta = 98.3 degrees. The X-ray diffraction pattern extends at least to 2.5 A Bragg spacing when exposed to CuK alpha X-rays. Self-rotation function analyses indicate that the ClpP oligomer has 72-point group symmetry. This symmetry suggests that the ClpP oligomer is a tetradecamer, (ClpP)14, consisting of two heptamers, (ClpP)7 stacked on top of each other in a head-to-head fashion. The measurement of crystal density indicates that two independent copies of the ClpP oligomers are present in the asymmetric unit, giving a crystal volume per protein mass (VM) of 2.73 A3/Da and a solvent content of 54.9% (v/v). Self-rotation function calculations are consistent with the presence of two ClpP tetradecamers in the asymmetric unit. The Patterson function suggests that a translation of x = 0.5 and y = 0.5 relates a pair of ClpP oligomers in one asymmetric unit to another pair in the other asymmetric unit. And the two independent tetradecamers in one asymmetric unit are related by a relative rotation of about 18 degrees around the 7-fold axis.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the effect of anti-inflammatory treatment on the outcome of argon laser trabeculoplasty. METHODS In this multicenter, double-masked, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel comparison study, 140 chronic open-angle glaucoma patients received either 0.25% fluorometholone or vehicle four times a day unilaterally, beginning 24 hours before and continuing one week after argon laser trabeculoplasty. The laser surgeon placed 50 to 60 burns over the inferior 180 degrees of the trabecular meshwork. The patients were followed up frequently for five weeks after the procedure. RESULTS Following argon laser trabeculoplasty, signs of anterior chamber inflammation were significantly lower in the fluorometholone group. However, there was no significant difference between the fluorometholone and the vehicle groups in the incidence of increased intraocular pressure in the immediate post-argon laser trabeculoplasty period. Intraocular pressure decreased significantly in both groups from day 1 throughout the follow-up period. A significant between-group difference in intraocular pressure decrease was found only at week 5 (7.83 +/- 6.27 [S.D.] mm Hg for the fluorometholone group vs 6.63 +/- 5.79 mm Hg for the vehicle group, P = .046). No drug-related clinically significant adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS Use of fluorometholone is effective in attenuating inflammation and has no clinically significant impact on the outcome of argon laser trabeculoplasty or on the incidence of intraocular pressure spikes during the immediate post-argon laser trabeculoplasty period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Until recently, there has been a paucity of quantitative evidence for intraocular pressure (IOP)-dependent optic disc cupping change in adult glaucoma patients. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between optic disc cupping change and IOP control. METHODS The study involved 78 eyes of 78 randomly selected adult patients with early to moderate chronic open-angle glaucoma (CO-AG), treated on various therapeutic regimens, who had had two consecutive successful optic disc analyses with the Rodenstock Optic Nerve Head Analyzer 15.8 +/- 14.8 weeks apart. RESULTS The mean initial IOP of 27 eyes (34%) with cupping reversal did not differ from that of 17 eyes (22%) demonstrating progressive deterioration (29.2 +/- 8.8 vs 26.2 +/- 6.1 mmHg, P > 0.5), but the reversal group did have a significantly greater mean IOP decrease than the progression group (-10.8 +/- 7.9 vs-1.0 +/- 7.7 mmHg, P < 0.001) and significantly lower mean final IOP (18.3 +/- 6.1 vs 25.2 +/- 7.9 mmHg, P < 0.003). CONCLUSION A decrease of optic disc cupping is more likely with a greater IOP reduction and a lower final IOP, and an increase of cupping is more likely with less or no IOP reduction and a higher final IOP.

Purification and characterization of the heat shock proteins HslV and HslU that form a new ATP-dependent protease in Escherichia coli. J Biol Chem 1996; 271:14035-40. Abstract
The hslVU operon in Escherichia coli encodes two heat shock proteins, HslV, a 19-kDa protein homologous to beta-type subunits of the 20 S proteasomes, and HslU, a 50-kDa protein related to the ATPase ClpX. We have recently shown that HslV and HslU can function together as a novel ATP-dependent protease, the HslVU protease. We have now purified both proteins to apparent homogeneity from extracts of E. coli carrying the hslVU operon on a multicopy plasmid. HslU by itself cleaved ATP, and pure HslV is a weak peptidase degrading certain hydrophobic peptides. HslU dramatically stimulated peptide hydrolysis by HslV when ATP is present. With a 1:4 molar ratio of HslV to HslU, approximately a 200-fold increase in peptide hydrolysis was observed. HslV stimulated the ATPase activity of HslU 2-4-fold, but had little influence on the affinity of HslU to ATP. The nonhydrolyzable ATP analog, beta,gamma-methylene-ATP, did not support peptide hydrolysis. Other nucleotides (CTP, dATP) that were slowly hydrolyzed by HslU allowed some peptide hydrolysis. Therefore, ATP cleavage appears essential for the HslV activity. Upon gel filtration on a Sephacryl S-300 column, HslV behaved as a 250-kDa oligomer (i.e. 12-14 subunits), and HslU behaved as a 100-kDa protein (i.e. a dimer) in the absence of ATP, but as a 450-kDa multimer (8-10 subunits) in its presence. Therefore ATP appears necessary for oligomerization of HslU. Thus the HslVU protease appears to be a two-component protease in which HslV harbors the peptidase activity, while HslU provides an essential ATPase activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report on a successful use of fascia lata patch graft in revision of trabeculectomy for management of severe chronic discomfort associated with an exuberant conjunctival filtering bleb over a very nasal filtering site. METHODS After dissecting a conjunctival flap over the area of the trabeculectomy at the nasal quadrant, fascia lata patch graft was sutured in place over the filtering site when primary suture closure was found ineffective. A new trabeculectomy was performed temporal and superior to the old site, and the conjunctival wound closed watertight. RESULTS The fascia lata patch graft was effective in closing the filtration over the old trabeculectomy site at the nasal quadrant, and a new filtering bleb developed superiorly over the new trabeculectomy site, resulting in sustained IOP control. CONCLUSION Fascia lata patch graft was effective in revision of trabeculectomy.

Abstract
The epithelium of the alveolus and distal airway meets unique requirements, functioning as a gas exchange membrane and barrier to alveolar flooding by vascular contents as well as to bloodstream contamination by airborne toxins and pathogens. Gene products specifically expressed by this epithelium, notably the surfactant apoproteins, have had important clinical application. No cell surface antigen specific for alveolar type II and Clara cells has been described. We report the biochemical characterization, tissue and developmental expression, and upregulation by injury of a 172 kD protein recognized by a monoclonal antibody, 3F9, synthesized in response to immunization with freshly isolated rat alveolar type II cells. p172 is expressed in a polarized fashion by the apical surface of rat alveolar type II and Clara cells. An immunohistochemical survey of various rat tissues and organs reveals lung specificity. p172 is first detectable in rare epithelial cells at 19 days of gestation, a time when the fully differentiated alveolar type II cell is identified by the first detection of lamellar bodies. There is a dramatic increase in p172 expression just prior to birth. Hyperoxic lung injury results in increased expression of p172. The upregulation of p172 by hyperoxia and its cell-specific expression suggests an important adaptive function.

Abstract
An immunohistochemical stain to the c-ErbB-2 protein was performed in 225 paraffin-embedded tissue blocks from patients with locally advanced gastric cancer who underwent curative resection. The overexpression of the c-ErbB-2 protein was observed in 27.4% of the patients. The c-ErbB-2 positivity showed a statistically significant correlation with nodal status and stage. The patients with an overexpression of the c-ErbB-2 protein had a tendency to a shorter survival than those without, but it was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). The 5-year survival rate after surgery was 54% in the negative staining group to the c-ErbB-2 protein and 49% in the positive staining group. This suggests that the c-ErbB-2 protein has a possible role in lymph node metastasis. Therefore overexpression of the c-ErbB-2 protein is a useful indicator of disease progression in gastric carcinoma patients who received curative surgery.
