Abstract
Aminophylline can elicit thermogenesis in rats or increase metabolic rate during cold stress in lambs. We tested the hypothesis that aminophylline would reduce the change in core body temperature during laparoscopic abdominal surgery requiring pneumoperitoneum. Fifty patients were randomly divided into an aminophylline group (n=25) and a saline control group (n=25). Esophageal temperature, index finger temperature, and hemodynamic variables, such as mean blood pressure and heart rate, were measured every 15 min during sevoflurane anesthesia. In the aminophylline group, esophageal temperatures at T45 (36.1±0.38 vs. 35.7±0.29, P=0.024), T60 (36.0±0.39 vs. 35.6±0.28, P=0.053), T75 (35.9±0.34 vs. 35.5±0.28, P=0.025), T90 (35.8±0.35 vs. 35.3±0.33, P=0.011), and T105 (35.8±0.36 vs. 35.1±0.53, P=0.017) and index finger temperatures at T15 (35.8±0.46 vs. 34.9±0.33, P<0.001), T30 (35.7±0.36 vs. 35.0±0.58, P=0.029), T45 (35.8±0.34 vs. 35.2±0.42, P=0.020), T60 (35.7±0.33 vs. 34.9±0.47, P=0.010), T75 (35.6±0.36 vs. 34.8±0.67, P=0.028), T90 (35.4±0.55 vs. 34.4±0.89, P=0.042), and T105 (34.9±0.53 vs. 33.9±0.85, P=0.024) were significantly higher than in the saline control group. Aminophylline is effective in maintaining the core temperature through a thermogenic effect, despite reduced peripheral thermoregulatory vasoconstriction.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and accuracy of a new portable ultrasonography-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USg-HIFU) system with a 3-dimensional (3D) electronic steering transducer, a simultaneous ablation and imaging module, real-time cavitation monitoring, and 3D image reconstruction algorithms. METHODS To address the accuracy of the transducer, hydrophones in a water chamber were used to assess the generation of sonic fields. An animal study was also performed in five pigs by ablating in vivo thighs by single-point sonication (n=10) or volume sonication (n=10) and ex vivo kidneys by single-point sonication (n=10). Histological and statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS In the hydrophone study, peak voltages were detected within 1.0 mm from the targets on the y- and z-axes and within 2.0-mm intervals along the x-axis (z-axis, direction of ultrasound propagation; y- and x-axes, perpendicular to the direction of ultrasound propagation). Twenty-nine of 30 HIFU sessions successfully created ablations at the target. The in vivo porcine thigh study showed only a small discrepancy (width, 0.5-1.1 mm; length, 3.0 mm) between the planning ultrasonograms and the pathological specimens. Inordinate thermal damage was not observed in the adjacent tissues or sonic pathways in the in vivo thigh and ex vivo kidney studies. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that this new USg-HIFU system may be a safe and accurate technique for ablating soft tissues and encapsulated organs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Postoperative surgical site infection (SSI) is a frequent postoperative complication in patients with oral cancer and significantly affects patient recovery and medical expenses. The aim of this study was to examine the predictors of SSI in patients undergoing major surgery for oral or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and to determine the relationship between perioperative albumin and the development of SSI. SUBJECTS AND METHODS In 337 consecutive patients who underwent clean-contaminated surgery for OSCC, serum albumin, glucose, and hemoglobin levels were perioperatively measured. Differences between the groups were examined using Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Surgical site infection was detected in 88 (26.1%) patients with median time to development of 10 (2-25) days. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that only postoperative serum albumin < 2.5 g dl(-1) was an independent variable predictive of SSI (P = 0.003). The duration of hospital stay was negatively correlated with postoperative albumin (R(2) = -0.302, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Early postoperative hypoalbuminemia <2.5 g dl(-1) is an independent risk factor for the development of SSI in patients undergoing oral cancer surgery. Clinicians should be aware of the implications of postoperative hypoalbuminemia and consider more intensive postoperative care in these patients.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the impact of the adaptive iterative dose reduction (AIDR) three-dimensional (3D) algorithm in CT on noise reduction and the image quality compared to the filtered back projection (FBP) algorithm and to compare the effectiveness of AIDR 3D on noise reduction according to the body habitus using phantoms with different sizes. Materials and Methods Three different-sized phantoms with diameters of 24 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm were built up using the American College of Radiology CT accreditation phantom and layers of pork belly fat. Each phantom was scanned eight times using different mAs. Images were reconstructed using the FBP and three different strengths of the AIDR 3D. The image noise, the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the phantom were assessed. Two radiologists assessed the image quality of the 4 image sets in consensus. The effectiveness of AIDR 3D on noise reduction compared with FBP were also compared according to the phantom sizes. Results Adaptive iterative dose reduction 3D significantly reduced the image noise compared with FBP and enhanced the SNR and CNR (p < 0.05) with improved image quality (p < 0.05). When a stronger reconstruction algorithm was used, greater increase of SNR and CNR as well as noise reduction was achieved (p < 0.05). The noise reduction effect of AIDR 3D was significantly greater in the 40-cm phantom than in the 24-cm or 30-cm phantoms (p < 0.05). Conclusion The AIDR 3D algorithm is effective to reduce the image noise as well as to improve the image-quality parameters compared by FBP algorithm, and its effectiveness may increase as the phantom size increases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Milrinone increases intracellular adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate concentration and enhances vascular relaxation. Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) plays a key role in inflammatory responses during ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. We aimed to investigate the effect of milrinone on the inflammatory responses and NF-kB activation in renal I/R injury in mice. METHODS Thirty C57BL/6 mice were allocated into 3 groups. In group S (n = 10), only right nephrectomy was done. In group C (n = 10), the left kidney was subjected to 30 min of ischemia after right nephrectomy. In group M (n = 10), milrinone (5 µg/kg) was administered before ischemia. After 24 hours of reperfusion, the serum creatinine was measured, kidney samples were obtained for histology, and expressions of NF-kB and proinflammatory cytokines were analyzed. RESULTS In group C, the serum creatinine concentration was markedly elevated, compared with group S. Creatinine concentration in group M was also elevated, but it was significantly lower than that in group C. Histologic evidence of renal damage was severe in group C, but it was improved in group M. In groups C and M, expression of NF-kB, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2) mRNA increased significantly compared with group S (P < 0.05). But group M showed a lower expression of NF-kB, TNF-α, ICAM-1, MCP-1 and MIP-2 mRNA than group C (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Milrinone treatment attenuates the renal inflammatory response and activation of NF-kB, resulting in improvement of renal function and tissue injury.

Abstract
Paclitaxel (Taxol) resistance remains a major obstacle for the successful treatment of ovarian cancer. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have oncogenic and tumor suppressor activity and are associated with poor prognosis phenotypes. miRNA screenings for this drug resistance are needed to estimate the prognosis of the disease and find better drug targets. miRNAs that were differentially expressed in Taxol-resistant ovarian cancer cells, compared with Taxol-sensitive cells, were screened by Illumina Human MicroRNA Expression BeadChips. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to identify target genes of selected miRNAs. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was applied to identify dysregulated miRNAs in ovarian cancer patients using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas. A total of 82 miRNAs were identified in ovarian carcinoma cells compared to normal ovarian cells. miR-141, miR-106a, miR-200c, miR-96, and miR-378 were overexpressed, and miR-411, miR-432, miR-494, miR-409-3p, and miR-655 were underexpressed in ovarian cancer cells. Seventeen miRNAs were overexpressed in Taxol-resistant cells, including miR-663, miR-622, and HS_188. Underexpressed miRNAs in Taxol-sensitive cells included miR-497, miR-187, miR-195, and miR-107. We further showed miR-663 and miR-622 as significant prognosis markers of the chemo-resistant patient group. In particular, the downregulation of the two miRNAs was associated with better survival, perhaps increasing the sensitivity of cancer cells to Taxol. In the chemo-sensitive patient group, only miR-647 could be a prognosis marker. These miRNAs inhibit several interacting genes of p53 networks, especially in TUOS-3 and TUOS-4, and showed cell line-specific inhibition effects. Taken together, the data indicate that the three miRNAs are closely associated with Taxol resistance and potentially better prognosis factors. Our results suggest that these miRNAs were successfully and reliably identified and would be used in the development of miRNA therapies in treating ovarian cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effect of imaging time delay on the MR detection of intracerebral metastases using single dose gadobutrol. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-one patients with intracerebral metastases underwent contrast-enhanced MR with three-dimensional T1-weighted sequence at 1 minute, 5 minutes and 10 minutes after a single dose injection of gadobutrol. One hundred index metastatic lesions (1 to 30 mm; median, 7 mm) were chosen for the analysis. For the qualitative analysis, lesion conspicuity were assessed on a 1 (worst) to 5 (best) scale of the index lesions by an expert reader. For the quantitative analysis, signal intensity (SI) of enhancing lesions and normal parenchyma was measured to determine the contrast rate (CR, %) ([postcontrast SI lesion - postcontrast SI white matter] × 100 / postcontrast SI white matter) and the enhancement rate (ER, %) ([postcontrast SI lesion - baseline SI gray matter] × 100 / baseline SI gray matter). Statistical comparisons were made between three different time delays. RESULTS Lesion conspicuity did not differ significantly among the three time delays (p = 0.097). Although the SI, CR and ER of lesions did not reveal any significant difference between 1 minute and 5 minutes delayed images, both the 1 minute and 5 minutes delayed images showed significantly higher CRs of lesions compared with the 10 minutes delayed images (p = 0.004 and p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION With single dose gadobutrol, imaging time delay did not have an effect on lesion conspicuity. Both 1-minute and 5-minute-delayed imaging after gadobutrol injection appears to be effective for the detection of intracerebral metastases.

Abstract
Biomolecular computing devices that are based on the properties of biomolecular activities offer a unique possibility for constructing new computing structures. A new concept of using various biomolecules has been proposed in order to develop a protein-based memory device that is capable of switching physical properties when electrical input signals are applied to perform memory switching. To clarify the proposed concept, redox protein is immobilized on Au nanoelectrodes to catalyze reversible reactions of redox-active molecules, which is controlled electrochemically and reversibly converted between its ON/OFF states. In this review, we summarize recent research towards developing nanoscale biomemory devices including design, synthesis, fabrication, and functionalization based on the proposed concept. At first we analyze the memory function properties of the proposed device at bulk material level and then explain the WORM (write-once-read-many times) nature of the device, later we extend the analysis to multi-bit and multi-level storage functions, and then we focus the developments in nanoscale biomemory devices based on the electron transport of redox molecules to the underlying Au patterned surface. The developed device operates at very low voltages and has good stability and excellent reversibility, proving to be a promising platform for future memory devices.

Abstract
We demonstrate optical fine-needle imaging biopsy (FNIB), combining a fine needle (22 gauge) and a high-resolution side-view probe (350-μm diameter) for minimally invasive interrogation of brain tissue in situ. We apply this technique to examine pathogenesis in murine models of neurodegeneration, brain metastasis of melanoma, and arterial occlusion, respectively. The demonstrated ability to obtain cellular images in the deep brain without craniotomy may be useful in the longitudinal studies of brain diseases.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasonography
(DCE-US) in the early quantification of hemodynamic change following
administration of the vascular disrupting agent (VDA) CKD-516 using a rabbit
VX2 liver tumor model. Methods: This study was approved by our institutional animal care and use committee.
Eight VX2 liver-tumor-bearing rabbits were treated with intravenous CKD-516,
and all underwent DCE-US using SonoVue before and again 2, 4, 6, and 24
hours following their treatment. The tumor perfusion parameters were
obtained from the time-intensity curve of the DCE-US data. Repeated measures
analysis of variance was performed to assess any significant change in tumor
perfusion over time. Relative changes in the DCE-US parameters between the
baseline and follow-up assessments were correlated with the relative changes
in tumor size over the course of seven days using Pearson correlation. Results: CKD-516 treatment resulted in significant changes in the DCE-US parameters,
including the peak intensity, total area under the time-intensity curve
(AUCtotal), and AUC during wash-out (AUCout) over
time (P<0.05). Pairwise comparison tests revealed that the
AUCtotal and AUC during wash-in (AUCin) seen on
the two-hour follow-up were significantly lower than the baseline values
(P<0.05). However, none of early changes in the DCE-US parameters until
24-hour follow-up showed a significant correlation with the relative changes
in tumor size during seven days after CKD-516 treatment. Conclusion: Our results suggest that a novel VDA (CKD-516) can cause disruption of tumor
perfusion as early as two hours after treatment and that the therapeutic
effect of CKD-516 treatment can be effectively quantified using DCE-US.

Abstract
Background Vertebral artery origin (VAO) stenosis is occasionally observed in patients who have acute ischemic stroke. We investigated the long-term outcomes and clinical significance of VAO stenosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods We performed a prospective observational study using a single stroke center registry to investigate the risk of recurrent stroke and vascular outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke and VAO stenosis. To relate the clinical significance of VAO stenosis to the vascular territory of the index stroke, patients were classified into an asymptomatic VAO stenosis group and a symptomatic VAO stenosis group. Results Of the 774 patients who had acute ischemic stroke, 149 (19.3%) of them had more than 50% stenosis of the VAO. During 309 patient-years of follow-up (mean, 2.3 years), there were 7 ischemic strokes, 6 hemorrhagic strokes, and 2 unknown strokes. The annual event rates were 0.97% for posterior circulation ischemic stroke, 4.86% for all stroke, and 6.80% for the composite cardiovascular outcome. The annual event rate for ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation was significantly higher in patients who had symptomatic VAO stenosis than in patients who had asymptomatic stenosis (1.88% vs. 0%, p = 0.046). In a multivariate analysis, the hazard ratio, per one point increase of the Essen Stroke Risk Score (ESRS) for the composite cardiovascular outcome, was 1.46 (95% CI, 1.02-2.08, p = 0.036). Conclusions Long-term outcomes of more than 50% stenosis of the VAO in patients with acute ischemic stroke were generally favorable. Additionally, ESRS was a predictor for the composite cardiovascular outcome. Asymptomatic VAO stenosis may not be a specific risk factor for recurrent ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation. However, VAO stenosis may require more clinical attention as a potential source of recurrent stroke when VAO stenosis is observed in patients who have concurrent ischemic stroke in the posterior circulation.

Lysyl-tRNA synthetase (KRS), a protein synthesis enzyme in the cytosol, relocates to the plasma membrane after a laminin signal and stabilizes a 67-kDa laminin receptor (67LR) that is implicated in cancer metastasis; however, its potential as an antimetastatic therapeutic target has not been explored. We found that the small compound BC-K-YH16899, which binds KRS, impinged on the interaction of KRS with 67LR and suppressed metastasis in three different mouse models. The compound inhibited the KRS-67LR interaction in two ways. First, it directly blocked the association between KRS and 67LR. Second, it suppressed the dynamic movement of the N-terminal extension of KRS and reduced membrane localization of KRS. However, it did not affect the catalytic activity of KRS. Our results suggest that specific modulation of a cancer-related KRS-67LR interaction may offer a way to control metastasis while avoiding the toxicities associated with inhibition of the normal functions of KRS.

Abstract
Primary intracranial fibrosarcomas (PIFs) are extremely rare and the origin of these tumors is still controversial. The rarity of primary intracranial fibrosarcomas makes it difficult to diagnose them correctly and establish a standard treatment. The pathologic diagnosis is made by distinguishing findings from light microscopic and immunohistochemistry analysis. PIFs have been known to be very aggressive neoplasms. The extra-axial location of the tumor could provide an opportunity to perform a total resection even if it does not mean a cure. We present a case of PIFs mimicking a falx meningioma in a 17-year-old man.

Abstract
Objective To clarify the prognosis of the patients with intra-sylvian hematoma (ISH) and intracerebral hematoma (ICH) in ruptured middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms. Methods We categorized hematoma into ISH and ICH by the presence of intra-hematomal contrast enhancing vessel (IHCEV) on computed tomography angiography (CTA). Forty-four ruptured MCA aneurysm patients with ICH or ISH were grouped by the grading system proposed by the authors in our previous study. We investigated the relevance of the following factors: patient's age, gender, Hunt-Hess grade, Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) and changes in Glasgow coma scale (GCS) between pre-operation and 7 days after operation. Results There were no significant differences statistically in age, gender, Hunt-Hess grade, and GOS between the ISH and ICH groups. In their peri-operative GCS change, the ICH group showed greater improvement compared to the ISH group (p = 0.0391). The hematoma grade had a significant relevance with the patients' GOS. Conclusion Although there were no significant statistic differences in the GOS of the 2 hematoma groups, there were prominent improvements of post-operative GCS in the ICH group. Unlike in the ISH group, effective removal of hematoma was possible in most patients of the ICH group. Thus although there is no difference in the prognosis of the 2 groups, early surgical evacuation of hematoma seems to be effective in improving the short-term GCS score in peri-operative period.

Abstract
Background Gene expression signatures have been commonly used as diagnostic and prognostic markers for cancer subtyping. However, expression signatures frequently include many passengers, which are not directly related to cancer progression. Their upstream regulators such as transcription factors (TFs) may take a more critical role as drivers or master regulators to provide better clues on the underlying regulatory mechanisms and therapeutic applications. Results In order to identify prognostic master regulators, we took the known 85 prognostic signature genes for colorectal cancer and inferred their upstream TFs. To this end, a global transcriptional regulatory network was constructed with total >200,000 TF-target links using the ARACNE algorithm. We selected the top 10 TFs as candidate master regulators to show the highest coverage of the signature genes among the total 846 TF-target sub-networks or regulons. The selected TFs showed a comparable or slightly better prognostic performance than the original 85 signature genes in spite of greatly reduced number of marker genes from 85 to 10. Notably, these TFs were selected solely from inferred regulatory links using gene expression profiles and included many TFs regulating tumorigenic processes such as proliferation, metastasis, and differentiation. Conclusions Our network approach leads to the identification of the upstream transcription factors for prognostic signature genes to provide leads to their regulatory mechanisms. We demonstrate that our approach could identify upstream biomarkers for a given set of signature genes with markedly smaller size and comparable performances. The utility of our method may be expandable to other types of signatures such as diagnosis and drug response.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of a prolonged inspiratory time on gas exchange in subjects undergoing one-lung ventilation for thoracic surgery. One hundred patients were randomly assigned to Group I:E = 1:2 or Group I:E = 1:1. Arterial blood gas analysis and respiratory mechanics measurements were performed 10 min after anaesthesia induction, 30 and 60 min after initiation of one-lung ventilation, and 15 min after restoration of conventional two-lung ventilation. The mean (SD) ratio of the partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen after 60 min of one-lung ventilation was significantly lower in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (27.7 (13.2) kPa vs 35.2 (22.1) kPa, respectively, p = 0.043). Mean (SD) physiological dead space-to-tidal volume ratio after 60 min of one-lung ventilation was significantly higher in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (0.46 (0.04) vs 0.43 (0.04), respectively, p = 0.008). Median (IQR [range]) peak inspiratory pressure was higher in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 after 60 min of one-lung ventilation (23 (22-25 [18-29]) cmH2O vs 20 (18-21 [16-27]) cmH2O, respectively, p < 0.001) and median (IQR [range]) mean airway pressure was lower in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (10 (8-11 [5-15]) cmH2O vs 11 (10-13 [5-16]) cmH2O, respectively, p < 0.001). We conclude that, compared with an I:E ratio of 1:2, an I:E ratio of 1:1 resulted in a modest improvement in oxygenation and decreased shunt fraction during one-lung ventilation.

Abstract
Miniature endoscopic probes offer a solution for deep brain imaging by overcoming the limited depth of intravital microscopy. We describe a small-diameter (350 μm) graded-index optical probe with a side-view design for in vivo cellular imaging of the mammalian brain. The side-view probe provides a unique view of the vertical network of neurons and penetrating blood vessels. At a given insertion site, the translational and rotational scanning of the probe provides access to a large tissue area (>1 mm(2)) across the cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, and hypothalamus.

Abstract
The Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 cathode thin films were deposited on planar, hemisphere, linked hemisphere, and isolated hemisphere structured Pt current collector thin films to investigate the effect of 3-dimensional (3-D) structure for the electrochemical properties of active cathode thin films. The films of linked hemisphere structure shows the highest initial discharge capacity of 140 microA h/cm2-microm which is better than those of planar (62 microA h/cm2-microm), hemisphere (94.6 microA h/cm2-microm), and isolated hemisphere (135 microA h/cm2-microm) films due to increase of surface area for cathode thin films. Linked hemisphere shows the biggest capacity and the best retention rate because 6 nanobridges of each hemisphere bring strong connection.

Abstract
Indium zinc oxide (IZO) films were deposited on glass substrate at room temperature using off-axis RF sputtering-continuous composition spread (CCS) system. The full range composition of IZO films were controlled by the deposition rate and thickness profiles of In2O3 and ZnO target. The structural, electrical and optical properties of IZO thin films were measured as functions of position. IZO thin film had the lowest resistivity and highest carrier concentration at the position of 15 mm (5.02 x 10(-4) omega cm, 3.9 x 10(20)/cm3). And IZO thin film had high transmittance in visible region at measured all positions. This study has investigated to explore the new composition of IZO films using CCS system.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the feasibility of carbogen-challenge blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessing the early response of liver tumors to chemoembolization in a rat hepatoma model. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a 9.4-Tesla scanner, a multiple gradient-recalled echo sequence was utilized for R2* measurement at 11 and 13 days after tumor implantation, first during room air breathing and then with carbogen gas (95% O2/5% CO2) breathing, to calculate the percentage changes of R2* values [ΔR2*(%)]. Transarterial chemoembolization was conducted 12 days after tumor implantation. RESULTS The ΔR2* value of the tumors was 10.61 ± 8.94% on pre-chemoembolization images and -0.16 ± 1.85% on post-chemoembolization images. There was a significant difference in the ΔR2* value of the tumors between pre-chemoembolization and post-chemoembolization BOLD MRI (p=0.013). CONCLUSION Carbogen-challenge BOLD MRI can be a non-invasive and useful method for the evaluation of early response of liver tumors to chemoembolization.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of aminophylline and doxapram on recovery, respiration, and bispectral index (BIS) values in patients after total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with propofol and remifentanil. DESIGN Prospective, randomized, blinded clinical trial. SETTING Operating room of a university hospital. PATIENTS 90 adult, ASA physical status 1 and 2 patients scheduled for elective laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy. INTERVENTIONS TIVA was performed with the induction target of remifentanil 3 ng/mL and propofol 6 μg/mL, followed by the maintenance target of remifentanil 1-3 ng/mL and propofol 3-5 μg/mL at the effect site, and with BIS scores in 40-50 range. Patients were randomized to three groups to receive intravenous (IV) aminophylline 3 mg/kg (n = 30), IV doxapram 1 mg/kg (n = 30), or normal IV saline (control; n = 30). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS After administration of the study drugs, return to spontaneous ventilation differed significantly among the three groups. The times to eye opening and hand squeezing on verbal command were similar. The time to extubation was shortened in both the doxapram and aminophylline groups (P < 0.05). Tidal volumes were increased in the doxapram group at 5-14 minutes and the aminophylline group at 5-12 minutes (P < 0.05). Respiratory rates were increased at 2 to 8 minutes and then showed a decrease at the 12 to 14-minute mark in both the doxapram and aminophylline groups (P < 0.05). No difference was noted between the two groups. BIS values were increased in both the doxapram and aminophylline groups at 4-10 minutes (P < 0.05). Heart rates were increased in the doxapram group for the first 8 minutes and at 1-2 minutes in the aminophylline group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Aminophylline 3 mg/kg or doxapram 1 mg/kg shortened the time to spontaneous ventilation and improved early recovery from TIVA without appreciable side effects. The more rapid emergence correlates with higher BIS values when compared with the saline control group. The arousal and respiratory effects of aminophylline were comparable to those of doxapram.

Abstract
Primordial germ cells (PGC) from early embryos are applicable to various kinds of research, including the production of transgenic animals. Primordial germ cells eventually migrate and differentiate into germ cells in the gonads, where they settle and rapidly proliferate. However, the proliferation rate of PGC is low in early embryos, and there are many significant pathways that mediate PGC activity. Therefore, in vitro culture of PGC from early embryos with efficient growth factors has been necessary. Recently, we cultured chicken PGC from embryonic d 2.5 with basic fibroblast growth factor and characterized the PGC through analysis of cell morphology, survival, proliferation, and apoptosis. However, large-scale analyses of genes expressed in cultured PGC and the genes involved in associated pathways are limited. The objective of the present investigation was to identify the signaling and metabolic pathways of expressed genes by microarray comparison between PGC and their somatic counterpart, chicken embryonic fibroblasts (CEF). We identified 795 genes that were expressed more predominantly in PGC and 824 genes that were expressed more predominantly in CEF. Among the predominant genes in PGC, 201 were differentially identified in 106 pathways. Among the predominant genes in CEF, 242 were differentially identified in 99 pathways. To further validate the genes involved in at least one candidate pathway, those involved in the cell cycle (12 predominant genes in PGC and 8 predominant genes in CEF) were examined by real-time PCR. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate signaling and metabolic pathways in cultured PGC.
