Abstract
Simultaneous generation of noncollinear red, green, and blue light from a single hexagonally poled lithium tantalate is reported. It results from the frequency self-doubling optical parametric amplification process, a process of second-order harmonic generation cascaded optical parametric amplification in a single-pass setup. The temperature and spectrum detuning characters of each cascaded quasi-phase-matching process are studied. This unique red-green-blue light source has potential applications in laser display and other laser industries.

Abstract
An optimal and integrative tsunami warning system is introduced that takes full advantage of remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) in monitoring, forecasting, detection, loss evaluation, and relief management for tsunamis. Using the primary impact zone in Banda Aceh, Indonesia as the pilot area, we conducted three simulations that showed that while the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami claimed about 300,000 lives because there was no tsunami warning system at all, it is possible that only about 15,000 lives could have been lost if the area had used a tsunami warning system like that currently in use in the Pacific Ocean. The simulations further calculated that the death toll could have been about 3,000 deaths if there had been a disaster system further optimized with full use of remote sensing and GIS, although the number of badly damaged or destroyed houses (29,545) could have likely remained unchanged.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effect of different zinc (Zn) levels on activities of gastrointestinal digestive enzymes of growing rats. Four diets including Zn-adequate (ZA; 46 mg/kg, control), Zn-deficient (ZD; 3 mg/kg), high Zn supply (ZH; 234 mg/kg) and pair-fed in which animals received the ZA diet at restricted amounts reflecting feed intake of the ZD group were fed to rats for 5 weeks. Dietary Zn was supplemented with ZnO. The results showed that Zn deficiency resulted in decreases in body weight, while ZH supply stimulated growth. The activities of sucrase, lactase and lipase were unaffected by dietary Zn levels. Maltase activity, however, was reduced in ZD group and elevated in ZH group. Amylase and protease activities were depressed by zinc deficiency. However, rats fed the Zn-repletion diet displayed higher activity of pepsin, pancreatic amylase and protease. In particular, ZH supply did have no effect on intestinal hydrolases activities. The present study suggested that zinc deficiency impaired the activities of digestive enzymes and growth of animals. However, ZH supply might improve the digestion of nutrients via increasing activities of gastrointestinal hydrolase and probably enhanced animal health.

Abstract
A dynamic heterogeneous phase polymerization reaction is found to be efficient for controllable cross-link of hemoglobin with glutaraldehyde. The selective absorption of the immobile phase and asymmetry of protein concentration leads to narrowness of the molecular weight distribution and lowness of the average molecular weight. Using this method, 53% of hemoglobin obtained is intermolecular cross-linked with 12 molecular equivalents of glutaraldehyde. The majority of poly-hemoglobins is in the range of 128 kD to 258 kD.

Abstract
In the title compound, {[Cu(C10H14N4)2(H2O)2](NO3)2}n, the CuII ion lies on an inversion center and is six-coordinated in an octahedral environment by four N atoms from four different 1,1′-butane-1,4-diyldiimidazole ligands and two O atoms from the two water molecules. Bridging by the ligands results in a ribbon structure. Adjacent ribbons are linked to the nitrate anions via O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming layers. One nitrate O atom is disordered equally over two positions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies have reported immortalization and tumorigenicity of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) transduced with exogenous human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT). We also have established a line of hMSCs transduced with hTERT (hTERT-hMSCs) and we have cultured these cells for 290 population doublings (PDs) during which they demonstrated a large proliferation potential but with no tumorigenicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the protein expression profile of hTERT-hMSCs with two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and peptide mass fingerprinting by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, to be able to analyse the effects of exogenous hTERT on protein expression in hMSCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS We generated proteome maps of primary hMSCs and hTERT-hMSCs at PD 95 and PD 275. RESULTS A total of 1543 +/- 145 protein spots in gels of primary MSCs at PD 12, 1611 +/- 186 protein spots in gels of hTERT-hMSCs at PD 95 and 1451 +/- 126 protein spots in gels of hTERT-hMSCs at 275 PD were detected. One hundred of these were successfully identified, including 20 which were differentially expressed. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that sustaining levels of prohibitin and p53 expression along with differential expression of proteins in hTERT-hMSCs provide an insight into lack of transforming activity of hTERT-hMSCs during cell proliferation.

Abstract
This study was purposed to investigate the angiogenin (ANG) expression in COS-7 cells and its biological activity. The gene of angiogenin was obtained from mononuclear cells of peripheral blood by using RT-PCR and inserted into eukaryotic expression vector of pcDNA3.1. After being transfected into COS-7 cells, the recombinant ANG was identified by Western blot assay. The function of promoting proliferation of ANG to ECV304 cells was detected by MTT method, and its activity of vascularization was analyzed by chick embryo chorioallantois treated by the culture supernatant after transfection with pcDNA3.1-ang. The result showed that recombinant ANG was expressed in COS-7 cells after transfection for 24 to 36 hours. It could specifically react with monoclonal antibody against ANG. The recombinant ANG could obviously promote the proliferation of ECV304 cells. In contrast with the control group, the culture supernatant of pcDNA3.1-ang transfected group could stimulate the angiogenesis in embryo chorioallantois. It is concluded that the ang transiently expresses in COS-7 cells, and its expression product obviously stimulates the cell proliferation and angiogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was first reported in November 2002 in China, and spreads to about 30 countries over the next few months. While the characteristics of epidemic transmission are individually assessed, there are also important implicit associations between them. METHODS A novel methodological framework was developed to overcome barriers among separate epidemic statistics and identify distinctive SARS features. Individual statistics were pair-wise linked in terms of their common features, and an integrative epidemic network was formulated. RESULTS The study of associations between important SARS characteristics considerably enhanced the mainstream epidemic analysis and improved the understanding of the relationships between the observed epidemic determinants. The response of SARS transmission to various epidemic control factors was simulated, target areas were detected, critical time and relevant factors were determined. CONCLUSION It was shown that by properly accounting for links between different SARS statistics, a data-based analysis can efficiently reveal systematic associations between epidemic determinants. The analysis can predict the temporal trend of the epidemic given its spatial pattern, to estimate spatial exposure given temporal evolution, and to infer the driving forces of SARS transmission given the spatial exposure distribution.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate mineral metabolism and immune response in dairy goats following intramammary inoculation with varying doses of Staphylococcus aureus. Blood samples were collected at 0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h after intramammary inoculation. Lowered plasma Fe concentrations were observed from 12 to 24 h postinoculation in groups SAA (Staph. aureus at 10(4) cfu, n = 5) and SAB (Staph. aureus at 10(8) cfu, n = 5). Plasma Cu concentrations increased in group SAB 2 h after inoculation and maintained greater concentrations until the end of the experiment compared with the control group (phosphate-buffered saline, n = 5). Increased plasma Zn concentrations in group SAB were observed 48 h after inoculation, and the concentration was still greater 72 h after inoculation compared with the control group. Greater plasma Mg concentrations were detected in groups SAA and SAB compared with the control group at all timepoints after inoculation. Plasma Mg concentrations were generally greater in group SAA than in group SAB through 72 h (except at 2 h). Plasma tumor necrosis factor-alpha concentrations were unchanged following intramammary inoculation with Staph. aureus throughout the study. Plasma IL-6 concentrations in groups SAA and SAB increased gradually compared with the control group and peaked at 48 h after inoculation. In group SAB, serum cortisol concentrations started to increase from 8 h postinoculation and peaked at 12 h postinoculation. In conclusion, increasing the inoculum dose does not induce more rapid proinflammatory cytokine responses, whereas the data indicate that mineral metabolic alterations occur during the course of Staph. aureus mastitis in the goat.

Abstract
This study was aimed to construct the soluble HLA-A*0201-PR1 complex for preparation of HLA-A*0201-PR1 tetramer. The recombinant HLA-A*0201-BSP (BirA substrate peptide) fusion protein as heavy chain and beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2) m) as light chain were expressed highly as insoluble aggregates in Escherichia coli and then purified with gel filtration, and the final purity reached above 90%. The two subunits were refolded to form an HLA-A*0201-peptide complex by dilution method in the presence of an antigenic peptide PR1, a HLA-A2-restricted peptide from proteinase 3 (aa 169 - 177, VLQELNVTV). Refolded HLA-A*0201-PR1 complex was biotinylated using a BirA enzyme and purified by anion exchange chromatography on a Q-Sepharose (fast flow) column. The extent of reconstitution of the HLA-A*0201-PR1 complex was analyzed by HPLC gel filtration. The refolded and biotinylated products were detected by Western blot and ELISA with monoclonal antibody BB7.2 that recognized the natural conformations of HLA-A2 and streptavidin. The results showed that the refolded complex was composed of HLA-A*0201-BSP aggregate, HLA-A*0201-PR1 complex and beta(2) m, and reconstitution yields of 18% with PR1 was obtained. Refolded HLA-A*0201-PR1 complex could be confirmed by practical immunological method and biotinylated efficiently. It is concluded that the refolding and biotinylation of HLA-A*0201-PR1 complex is successfully obtained. This work provides the basis for the preparation of HLA-A*0201-PR1 tetramer.

Abstract
The effects of zinc on growing rats were characterized using the dietary zinc-deficient (ZD) and Zinc-overdose (ZO) models. Zinc deficiency had negative effects on the host final body weight and liver zinc content, whereas zinc overdose had positive effects. In order to identify the molecular changes in the liver responding to dietary zinc status, cDNA microarrays were used to analyze the expression pattern of 9753 genes in the livers of rats fed ZD and ZO diet for 6 wk, compared with zinc-adequate ZA. The mRNA levels for 62 genes were affected significantly by the ZD diet, whereas 66 gene transcriptions were markedly changed in the ZO diet. Those predominant gene products involved in nitrogen metabolism (glutaminase), carbohydrate metabolism (aldolase), lipid metabolism (stearoyl-CoA desaturase), growth (insulin-like growth factor-binding protein), transcription and translation (zinc-finger protein), immune (natural-killer cell), signal transduction (mitogen- activated protein kinase), and ion transportation (ATPase Na+/K+ transporting peptide) were clustered. In conclusion, a number of mammalian genes related to zinc in the liver were identified. The characterization of the genes and their products will allow a more comprehensive analysis of the role of zinc in metabolism. Furthermore, the mRNA identified could be useful in establishing the mechanisms of zinc in the pleiotropic metabolisms in vivo.

Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely practiced and is considered as an attractive to conventional medicine. Multi-herb recipes have been routinely used in TCM. These have been formulated by using TCM-defined herbal properties (TCM-HPs), the scientific basis of which is unclear. The usefulness of TCM-HPs was evaluated by analyzing the distribution pattern of TCM-HPs of the constituent herbs in 1161 classical TCM prescriptions, which shows patterns of multi-herb correlation. Two artificial intelligence (AI) methods were used to examine whether TCM-HPs are capable of distinguishing TCM prescriptions from non-TCM recipes. Two AI systems were trained and tested by using 1161 TCM prescriptions, 11,202 non-TCM recipes, and two separate evaluation methods. These systems correctly classified 83.1-97.3% of the TCM prescriptions, 90.8-92.3% of the non-TCM recipes. These results suggest that TCM-HPs are capable of separating TCM prescriptions from non-TCM recipes, which are useful for formulating TCM prescriptions and consistent with the expected correlation between TCM-HPs and the physicochemical properties of herbal ingredients responsible for producing the collective pharmacological and other effects of specific TCM prescriptions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is widely practised and is viewed as an attractive alternative to conventional medicine. Quantitative information about TCM prescriptions, constituent herbs and herbal ingredients is necessary for studying and exploring TCM. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH We manually collected information on TCM in books and other printed sources in Medline. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Information Database TCM-ID, at http://tcm.cz3.nus.edu.sg/group/tcm-id/tcmid.asp, was introduced for providing comprehensive information about all aspects of TCM including prescriptions, constituent herbs, herbal ingredients, molecular structure and functional properties of active ingredients, therapeutic and side effects, clinical indication and application and related matters. RESULTS TCM-ID currently contains information for 1,588 prescriptions, 1,313 herbs, 5,669 herbal ingredients, and the 3D structure of 3,725 herbal ingredients. The value of the data in TCM-ID was illustrated by using some of the data for an in-silico study of molecular mechanism of the therapeutic effects of herbal ingredients and for developing a computer program to validate TCM multi-herb preparations. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The development of systems biology has led to a new design principle for therapeutic intervention strategy, the concept of 'magic shrapnel' (rather than the 'magic bullet'), involving many drugs against multiple targets, administered in a single treatment. TCM offers an extensive source of examples of this concept in which several active ingredients in one prescription are aimed at numerous targets and work together to provide therapeutic benefit. The database and its mining applications described here represent early efforts toward exploring TCM for new theories in drug discovery.

Abstract
High-yield production of HLA-A*0201 heavy chain is a prerequisite to the preparation of HLA-A2 tetramer. The present study was aimed to construct the expression vector of recombinant HLA-A*0201-BSP fusion gene for preparing HLA-A2 tetramers. The extracellular region HLA*0201 was cloned by RT-PCR from HLA-A2(+) donor, and a 15-amino acid biotin-protein ligase (BirA) substrate peptide (BSP) for BirA-dependent biotinylation was added to the COOH-terminus of HLA-A*0201 heavy chain. Then the fusion gene was cloned into pBV220 vector at EcoRI and Bam HI sites and its sequence was confirmed by DNA sequence analysis. The recombinant plasmid pBV220-HLA-A*0201-BSP was transformed to the competent cells of E.coli DH5alpha. The results showed that the HLA-A*0201-BSP fusion protein was successfully expressed in the form of inclusion body and amounted to over 28% of total cell proteins via induction at 42 degrees C. After washed with triton X-100 and urea, the inclusion body was dissolved with 8 mol/L urea and then purified with Sepharcyl S-300 HR, and the final purity reached above 90%. It is concluded that the HLA-A*0201-BSP fusion gene was cloned successfully and expressed efficiently in E.coli DH5alpha. This work establishes a convenient approach for purification of large quantity of recombinant HLA-A*0201-BSP. This provides the basis for the preparation of HLA-A2 tetramers.

Abstract
Portal vein stenosis after liver transplantation is a relatively uncommon vascular complication that may result in graft loss if not promptly treated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the midterm result of the use of intravascular stents for portal vein stenosis after liver transplantation. From April 2004 to September 2005, percutaneous transhepatic balloon dilation with stent deployment was performed in nine cases. Varices were embolized with stainless steel coils in two cases. No procedure-related complication occurred. Portal venous patency was maintained in all nine patients from 6 to 19 months (mean 10 months). In conclusion, an intravascular stent is an effective treatment for the portal vein stenosis after liver transplantation with excellent midterm patency.

Abstract
Ten multiparous lactating sows were used to investigate whether intramammary infusion of lipopolysaccharides (LPS; Escherichia coli 0111:B4; 2.0 microg/kg of body weight) would affect the circulating concentrations of Ca, P, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and cortisol. The sows were randomly allotted to either control group (control) or LPS-treated group with five individuals per group and were infused with either physiological saline solution or LPS solution. The rectal temperature and udder quarter appearance were recorded at 0 (just before infusion), 1, 3, 7, 12 or 24 h after infusion. Blood samples were taken at 0, 1, 3, 7, 12 or 24 h after infusion. Before infusion, the rectal temperatures of all sows were below 39.2 degrees C. At 3 and 7 h after infusion, the sows in the LPS group had a rectal temperature over 39.4 degrees C. At 24 h after infusion, the rectal temperatures returned to pre-infusion levels. Serum Ca and P concentrations in the LPS group decreased (P < 0.05) after LPS infusion compared with the control group at 1 h after infusion. No significant differences (P > 0.05) in the concentrations of 25-OHD were observed between groups control and LPS at any sampling time. Increased (P < 0.01) concentrations of serum TNF-alpha, IL-6 and cortisol were observed in the LPS group compared with the control group at 3 and 7 h after infusion respectively. In conclusion, the elevation of serum concentrations of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and cortisol and the alterations of circulating concentrations of Ca and P following LPS infusion indicate that the immune system has been activated and immune activation may affect macromineral homeostatic regulation, which might have important implications for metabolic health of lactating sows. Lowered serum Ca and P following immune activation also shows a causative mechanism whereby immune activation increases the risk of secondary disorders such as mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome. However, immune activation did not affect circulating concentrations of vitamin D metabolites.

Abstract
Human beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)m) is the light chain of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecule. High-yield production of this protein is a prerequisite to the preparation of MHC class I tetramer. The present study was aimed to obtain recombinant human beta(2)m expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) for preparing MHC class I tetramers. For cloning of human beta(2)m gene, a pair of specific primers was designed based on the published sequence of this gene. A 300 bp specific DNA fragment corresponding to the encoding region of beta(2)m lack of the signal peptide sequence was obtained by RT-PCR from the total RNA of human leukocytes. The amplified cDNA was inserted into the IPTG-inducible expression plasmid pET-17b by Nde I and Bam H I sites and its sequence was confirmed by DNA sequence analysis. The recombinant plasmid pET-beta(2)m was transformed to the competent cells of E. coli BL21 (DE3). The results showed that beta(2)m was expressed in the form of inclusion body and amounted to over 32% of total cell proteins after IPTG induction. After washing with triton X-100 and urea, the inclusion body was dissolved with 4 mol/L urea and then purified with Sephacryl S-200 HR, and the final purity reached above 95%. The denatured protein was renatured by dilution method. Western blot assay indicated that the monoclonal antibody against human native beta(2)m could react specifically with the recombinant protein. In conclusion, the human beta(2)m gene was cloned successfully and expressed efficiently in E. coli BL21 (DE3). This work establishes a convenient approach for renaturation and purification of large quantity of recombinant beta(2)m. This provides the basis for the preparation of MHC tetramers.

Abstract
An unusual phenomenon of anaerobic phosphate uptake under alternating anaerobic/aerobic condition was observed in a granular sludge sequencing batch reactor, fed with acetate as sole organic substrate. Anaerobic phosphate uptake efficiencies remained at 50-70% as the influent P/COD was increased from 2/100 to 4/100, and results showed that anaerobic uptake of phosphate was correlated with anaerobic absorption of acetate. Excluding the main possibility of chemical phosphate removal, it appeared that phosphate uptake during the anaerobic phase was associated with organisms enriched in the reactor. Moreover, results indicated that intracellular glycogen was used as the main energy source of organics anaerobic absorption and intracellular polymers storage. Measuring and analysing the variation of phosphate, organic substrate, intracellular glycogen and pH in the anaerobic phase, a preliminary explanation was developed that anaerobic uptake of phosphate was the demand of intracellular glycogen degradation, and extracellular phosphate was transported to intracellular by pH gradient-sensitive phosphate carrier protein.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is an essential nutrient that is required in humans and animals for many physiological functions, including immune and antioxidant function, growth, and reproduction. The present study was performed to investigate the effects of three Zn levels, including Zn adequate (35.94 mg/kg, as a control), Zn deficiency (3.15 mg/kg), and Zn overload (347.50 mg/kg) in growing male rats for 6 wk. This allowed for evaluation of the effects that these Zn levels might have on body weight, organ weight, enzymes activities, and tissues concentrations of Zn and Cu. The results showed that Zn deficiency has negative effects on growth, organ weight, and biological parameters such as alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD) activities, whereas Zn overload played an effective role in promoting growth, improving the developments of organs and enhancing immune system. Hepatic metallothionein (MT) concentration showed an identical increase tendency in rats fed both Zn-deficient and Zn-overload diets. The actual mechanism of reduction of Cu concentration of jejunum in rats fed a Zn-overload diet might involve the modulation or inhibition of a Cu transporter protein by Zn and not by the induction of MT.

Abstract
Text-based search is widely used for biomedical data mining and knowledge discovery. Character errors in literatures affect the accuracy of data mining. Methods for solving this problem are being explored. This work tests the usefulness of the Smith-Waterman algorithm with affine gap penalty as a method for biomedical literature retrieval. Names of medicinal herbs collected from herbal medicine literatures are matched with those from medicinal chemistry literatures by using this algorithm at different string identity levels (80-100%). The optimum performance is at string identity of 88%, at which the recall and precision are 96.9% and 97.3%, respectively. Our study suggests that the Smith-Waterman algorithm is useful for improving the success rate of biomedical text retrieval.

Abstract
Zein, the prolamine of corn, has been investigated for its potential as an industrial biopolymer. In previous research, zein was plasticized with oleic acid and formed into sheets/films. Physical properties of films were affected by film structure and controlled in turn by zein-oleic acid interactions. The nature of such interactions is not well understood. Thus, protein-fatty acid interactions were investigated in this work by the use of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Zein adsorption from 75% aqueous 2-propanol solutions, 0.05% to 0.5% w/v, onto hydrophilic and hydrophobic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid and 1-octanethiol, respectively, was monitored by high time resolution SPR. Initial adsorption rate and ultimate surface coverage increased with bulk protein concentration for both surfaces. The initial slope of plotted adsorption isotherms was higher on 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid than on 1-octanethiol, indicating higher zein affinity for hydrophilic SAMs. Also, maximum adsorption values were higher for zein on hydrophilic than on hydrophobic SAMs. Flushing off loosely bound zein in the SPR cell allowed estimation of apparent monolayer values. Differences in monolayer values for hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces were explained in terms of zein adsorption footprint.

Abstract
Since 1997 a radiotherapy unit using fast carbon ions is operational at GSI. An intensity-controlled magnetic raster scanner together with a synchrotron allowing fast energy variation enable a unique method of purely active dose shaping in three dimensions. This contribution describes the necessary steps to establish a treatment planning system for this novel modality. We discuss the requirements for the physical beam model and the radiobiological model. Based on these we chose to implement a home-grown pencil beam model to describe the ion-tissue interaction and the Local Effect Model to calculate the RBE voxel-by-voxel. Given the large number of degrees of freedom biological dose optimization must be achieved by means of inverse treatment planning. All ion-related aspects are collected in our TRiP98 software. Biological dosimetry measuring cell survival in two dimensions turns out to be a good way to verify the model predictions as well as the actual irradiation procedure. We show a patient example and outline the future steps towards a dedicated clinic facility for all light ions.

Abstract
Freeze-dried ileal effluent (1% wt/vol) from cannulated pigs fed rice-based diets with the inclusion of either animal protein (CON), animal protein plus potato starch (PS), animal protein plus sugar beet pulp (SBP), or animal protein plus wheat bran (WB) was incubated anaerobically at pH 6.0 in fermenters containing 5% (wt/vol) fecal slurry comprising mineral salts medium and 50 g/L of fresh feces from pigs fed the same diets as the cannulated pigs. Samples were collected from the fermenters at 0, 2, 4, 12, 24, and 48 h during in vitro fermentation for measuring nonstarch polysaccharides (NSP), starch, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). Results showed that the major SCFA produced were acetate, propionate, and butyrate. The inclusion of soluble dietary fiber (diet SBP) caused the highest concentrations of acetate, propionate, butyrate, and total SCFA, whereas the increase in the production of propionate resulting from the addition of insoluble dietary fiber (diet WB) only occurred at the initial stages during 48 h in vitro fermentation. At all sampling occasions (except for 4 h), the levels of butyrate were increased (P < 0.01) by resistant starch compared with fiber sources, showing that a higher level of butyrate can be achieved through microbial fermentation by potato starch. Lowered (P < 0.05) butyrate concentrations were observed with diet WB during in vitro fermentation. With the inclusion of fiber sources, the energy originating from SCFA was similar to that from NSP disappearance, whereas the values were lower (P < 0.05) from NSP disappearance than for SCFA generated without fiber sources supplemented. We conclude that more substrate is available in ileal effluent with the addition of soluble dietary fiber, and an increased level of butyrate could be achieved through microbial fermentation by resistant starch.
