Abstract
Grapevine leafroll disease (GLD) is one of the most economically important diseases of cultivated grapevines (Vitis vinifera), causing decrease in yield, as well as decreasing the sugar levels and increasing the acidity of the berries (1). There are currently at least 10 serologically distinct viruses, referred to as grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaVs), from the family Closteroviridae that are associated with leafroll disease (4). China is one of the world's leading grape producers, and nearly 75% of the vineyards in China are located in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Hebei, Shandong, Gansu, Ningxia, and Yunnan provinces. Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 7 (GLRaV-7) isolates have been reported so far in Liaoning (GQ849392, GQ849393, and JF927943) and Henan (EF093187) provinces in China (3). The four Chinese isolates were isolated respectively from grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon (GQ849392, GQ849393), Centennial Seedless (JF927943), and Semillon (EF093187), and these grape varieties are introduced from abroad. Cow's Nipple and Dragon's Eye are old grape varieties native to China. Cow's nipple is extensively cultivated in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, while Dragon's Eye is widely planted in Heibei Province. To determine if GLRaV-7 was present in these two varieties, six samples (three per variety) were collected from six individual grapevines showing GLD-like symptoms in two vineyards in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Hebei Province, respectively, in September 2011. Total RNA extracts obtained from phloem scrapings of samples using the RNeasy plant mini kit (QIAGEN) were tested by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR with primers F1 (5'-TATATCCCAACGGAGATGGC-3') and R1 (5'-ATGTTCCTCCACCAAAATCG-3') (2) specific to the heat shock protein 70 homologue (HSP-70 gene) of GLRaV-7. All samples produced a single band of the expected size of 502 bp. One GLRaV-7-specific amplicon per variety was cloned into pMD 18-T simple vector (TaKaRa). Plasmid DNA was purified using Column Plasmid DNAOUT (TIANDZ, Beijing, China) from three individual clones and sequenced from both directions. The sequence of the two isolates (GenBank Accession Nos. JX494722 and JX494723) shared 97.81% identity at the nucleotide level and 100% identity at the amino acid level. A pairwise comparison of HSP-70 sequences of the two isolates from this report with nine corresponding sequences of GLRaV-7 isolates (including four previously reported Chinese isolates) showed nucleotide sequence identities ranging from 91.24% (EF093187) to 98.80% (GQ849392). These samples were further analyzed by double antibody sandwich (DAS)-ELISA using antibody specific to GLRaV-7 (NEOGEN Europe, Ayr, Scotland) according to the manufacturer's instructions, and the results confirmed the presence of the virus in these samples that were positive by RT-PCR. To our knowledge, this is the first report of GLRaV-7 occurring in native grape varieties in China. These results could be helpful in developing sound diagnostic systems for implementing efficient disease management strategies. References: (1) B. Akbas et al. Hort. Sci. 36:97, 2009. (2) E. Abstract
The aim of the study is to investigate the methods of separation, culture and identification of Sprague Dawley (SD) rat corpus cavernosal vascular endothelial cells (CCECs). Cavernosal tissues were isolated from male SD rats. Enzymatic digestion was applied to separate CCECs. Purified cells were obtained using immunomagnetic beads and flow cytometric cell sorting and subcultured in EMG-2 medium. The growth curve of CCECs was measured by the tetrazolium salt 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. The cells were identified by von Willebrand factor (vWF) using immunofluorescence, and the positive percentage of vWF expression was detected by flow cytometry. The monomorphic cobblestone-like cells were observed by microscopy. High purification was obtained using immunomagnetic beads. After 2 days of incubation, cells entered the logarithmic growth phase and reached a plateau on the fifth day. The vWF expression in cytoplasm was positive. The purity of cells was 95.8%, which was tested by flow cytometry. SD rat CCECs can be separated and cultured successfully by the method of enzymatic digestion, immunomagnetic beads and flow cytometric cell sorting.

Abstract
The genotoxicity of fenpropathrin and fenitrothion on root tip cells of Vicia faba was studied. The symptoms were investigated about the mitotic index, the micronucleus frequency and chromosomal aberration frequency of root tip cells of Vicia faba which were induced by different concentrations of fenpropathrin and fenitrothion (1 × 10(-10)-1 × 10(-2) g L(-1)). Results showed that fenpropathrin and fenitrothion could induce the micronucleus of root tip cells of Vicia faba. It occurred in a dose-dependent manner. Peaks were observed at 1 × 10( -6) g L(-1) fenpropathrin and 1 × 10(-4) g L(-1) fenitrothion, and micronucleus frequency reached 14.587 ± 1.511‰ and 14.164 ± 1.623‰, respectively. From 1 × 10(-10) g L(-1) to 1 × 10( -6) g L(-1) fenpropathrin and 1 × 10(-4) g L(-1) fenitrothion, the micronucleus frequency increased with the increase of the concentrations, but beyond this range, the micronucleus frequency decreased with the further increase of the concentrations. A similar trend was observed for mitotic index. Moreover, fenpropathrin and fenitrothion could induce various types of chromosome aberration, such as lagging chromosomes, chromosome fragment, chromosome bridge, multipolar, nuclear buds, karyorrhexis, etc.

Abstract
In this paper, it is considered that the local structure of the (AgCl6)4- cluster for the NaCl: Ag2+ crystal is of the axially elongational D4h symmetry which possesses the weaker rhombic distortion at <001> lattice site. The mechanism for an admixture of the 2A1g into the ground state 2B1g is taken into account. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) g factors of NaCl: Ag2+ are studied by using the double spin-orbit coupling model and an approximation of a semiempirical molecular orbit. The EPR g factors for the NaCl: Ag2+ crystals are reasonably explained as well as the good agreement between the calculated values and the experimental data is obtained.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The combination of Chinese herbs, Astragali Radix and Angelicae Sinensis Radix, could alleviate renal interstitial fibrosis. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) and ferulic acid (FA) are the two major active constituents in this combination. In this study, we employed rats with unilateral ureteral obstruction to determine whether AS-IV and FA have the same renoprotective effects and investigated the mechanisms of this action. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Renal pathological changes were evaluated after treatment with AS-IV, FA or AS-IV + FA (AF) for 10 days. Meanwhile, the expression of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), fibronectin, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), phosphorylation of c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (p-JNK) and nitric oxide (NO) production in kidney were determined. The expressions of fibronectin, α-SMA, mitogen-activated protein kinases [JNK, extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK), P38] in TGF-β1-treated NRK-49F cells or interleukin-1-treated HK-2 cells after AS-IV, FA or AF were assessed. KEY RESULTS AF alleviated the infiltration of mononuclear cells, tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis; reduced the expression of fibronectin, α-SMA, TGF-β1 and p-JNK; and dramatically increased the production of NO in obstructed kidneys. Neither AS-IV nor FA alone improved renal damage, but both increased NO production. AF inhibited α-SMA and fibronectin expression in NRK-49F or HK-2 cells. Furthermore, AF significantly inhibited IL-1β-induced JNK phosphorylation, without affecting ERK or P38 phosphorylation. Neither AS-IV nor FA alone had any effect on the cells. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS AS-IV synergizes with FA to alleviate renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis; this was associated with inhibition of tubular epithelial–mesenchymal transdifferentiation (EMT) and fibroblast activation, as well as an increase in NO production in the kidney.

Abstract
A nondestructive method to determine the density of coating has been proposed in this paper based on the ultrasonic reflection coefficient phase spectrum (URCPS). A model was set up first to represent the ultrasonic waves reflected from a coating system at normal incident, and the relation between the extremum of URCPS and the coating density was established to provide the principle of determining the density. The ultrasonic method was validated on a series of ZrO2-7wt.%Y2O3 (YSZ) coatings with various density. The specimens were prepared by electric beam physical vapor deposit (EB-PVD). After deposition, the specimens were irradiated using high-intensity pulsed ion beam (HIPIB) at different ion current density of 100 and 200A/cm2 to change coating density. The coating densities of as-deposited and post irradiation by HIPIB were derived to be 4940-5030, 5200-5320 and 5390-5470kg/m3, respectively. The relative error between the coating density measured by the ultrasonic method and Archimedean principle ranging from 2.53% to 6.11%, indicates that the proposed ultrasonic quantification method provides a reliable nondestructive way to determine coating density.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blood alcohol levels (BAL) cycle up and down over a 7-8 day period when ethanol is fed continuously for one month in the intragastric tube feeding rat model (ITFRM) of alcoholic liver disease. The cycling phenomenon is due to an alternating increase and decrease in the metabolic rate. Recently, we found that S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe) fed with alcohol prevented the BAL cycle. METHOD Using the ITFRM we fed rats betaine (2 g/kg/day) with ethanol for 1 month and recorded the daily 24 h urine ethanol level (UAL) to measure the BAL cycle. UAL is equivalent to BAL because of the constant ethanol infusion. Liver histology, steatosis and BAL were measured terminally after 1 month of treatment. Microarray analysis was done on the mRNA extracted from the liver to determine the effects of betaine and alcohol on changes in gene expression. RESULTS Betaine fed with ethanol completely prevented the BAL cycle similar to SAMe. Betaine also significantly reduced the BAL compared to ethanol fed rats without betaine. This was also observed when SAMe was fed with ethanol. The mechanism involved in both cases is that SAMe is required for the conversion of epinephrine from norepinephrine by phenylethanolamine methyltransferase (PNMT). Epinephrine is 5 to 10 fold more potent than norepinephrine in increasing the metabolic rate. The increase in the metabolic rate generates NAD, permitting ADH to increase the oxidation of alcohol. NAD is the rate limiting factor in oxidation of alcohol by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). This explains how SAMe and betaine prevented the cycle. Microarray analysis showed that betaine feeding prevented the up regulation of a large number of genes including TLR2/4, Il-1b, Jax3, Sirt3, Fas, Ifngr1, Tgfgr2, Tnfrsf21, Lbp and Stat 3 which could explain how betaine prevented fatty liver. CONCLUSION Betaine feeding lowers the BAL and prevents the BAL cycle by increasing the metabolic rate. This increases the rate of ethanol elimination by generating NAD.

Intestinal growth and morphology is associated with the increase in heat shock protein 70 expression in weaning piglets through supplementation with glutamine. J Anim Sci 2011; 89:3634-42. Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of oral Gln supplementation on growth performance, intestinal morphology, and expression of heat shock protein (Hsp) 70 in weaning piglets. A total of 65 piglets after weaning at 21 d of age (d 0) were used in this experiment. Five piglets were randomly selected and euthanized initially at d 0 to determine baseline values for the expression of Hsp70 in the small intestine. The remaining piglets were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments and received 0 or 1 g of oral Gln/kg of BW every 12 h. After piglets were humanely killed at d 3, 7, and 14 postweaning, the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of piglets were sampled to evaluate intestinal morphology and the expression and localization of Hsp70. The results indicated that oral Gln supplementation increased plasma concentrations of Gln compared with those in control piglets (P < 0.05). Average daily gain and ADFI were greater in piglets orally supplemented with Gln than in control piglets during the whole period (P < 0.05). The incidence of diarrhea in piglets orally supplemented with Gln was 24% less than (P = 0.064) that in control piglets at 8 to 14 d after weaning. The weights of the jejunum and ileum were greater in piglets orally supplemented with Gln compared with those of control piglets relative to BW on d 14 postweaning (P < 0.05). The villus height and the villus height:crypt depth ratio in the jejunum and the ileum were greater in piglets receiving oral Gln on d 14 postweaning (P < 0.05) than in control piglets. These results indicate that Gln supplementation can influence the intestinal morphology of weaned piglets. The expression of hsp70 mRNA and Hsp70 proteins in the duodenum and jejunum was greater in piglets supplemented with Gln than in control piglets (P < 0.05). However, Gln supplementation had no effect on the expression of hsp70 mRNA and Hsp70 proteins in the ileum. Moreover, the localization of Hsp70 in the cytoplasm indicated that Hsp70 has a cytoprotective role in epithelial cell function and structure. These results indicate that Gln supplementation may be beneficial for intestinal health and development and may thus mitigate diarrhea and improve growth performance. The protective mechanisms of Gln in the intestine may be associated with the increase in Hsp70 expression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic allergic asthma is the result of a T-helper type 2 (Th2)-biased immune status. Current asthma therapies control symptoms in some patients, but a long-lasting therapy has not been established. Anti-Asthma Simplified Herbal Medicine Intervention (ASHMI™), a Chinese herbal formula, improved symptoms and lung function, and reduced Th2 responses in a controlled trial of patients with persistent moderate to severe asthma. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the persistence of ASHMI™ beneficial effects following therapy in a murine model of chronic asthma and the immunological mechanisms underlying such effects. Methods BALB/c mice sensitized intraperitoneally with ovalbumin (OVA) received 3 weekly intratracheal OVA challenges to induce airway hyper-reactivity (AHR) and inflammation (OVA mice). Additionally, OVA mice were treated with ASHMI™ (OVA/ASHMI™) or water (OVA/sham) for 4 weeks, and then challenged immediately and 8 weeks post-therapy. In other experiments, OVA mice received ASHMI™ treatment with concomitant neutralization of IFN-γ or TGF-β. Effects on airway responses, cytokine- and OVA-specific IgE levels were determined 8 weeks post-therapy. RESULTS Before treatment, OVA mice exhibited AHR and pulmonary eosinophilic inflammation following OVA challenge, which was almost completely resolved immediately after completing treatment with ASHMI™ and did not re-occur following OVA re-challenge up to 8 weeks post-therapy. Decreased allergen-specific IgE and Th2 cytokine levels, and increased IFN-γ levels also persisted at least 8 weeks post-therapy. ASHMI™ effects were eliminated by the neutralization of IFN-γ, but not TGF-β, during therapy. CONCLUSION ASHMI™ induced long-lasting post-therapy tolerance to antigen-induced inflammation and AHR. IFN-γ is a critical factor in ASHMI™ effects.

Abstract
This study presents a reductive transformation method that combines zerovalent iron (ZVI) and Aeromonas hydrophila HS01 with iron oxide reduction property to degrade DDT (1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane) under anoxic conditions. The results suggest that HS01 has weak capability in terms of reducing DDT to DDD (1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane) and nearly failed to reduce DDD or its transformed intermediates. The coexistence of ZVI and HS01 results in a slight enhancement of DDT degradation compared with the ZVI system alone. The reduction of intermediates by ZVI, however, can be obviously accelerated in the presence of HS01, and the addition of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic disodium salt (AQDS) can accelerate the transformation rates further, especially for intermediate reduction. The analysis of the amount and electrochemical properties of Fe(III)/Fe(II) indicates that the presence of HS01 with or without AQDS is beneficial to the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II), resulting in the removal of passivating ferric precipitates on the ZVI surface. A mechanism and pathway that clarify the roles of ZVI, HS01, and AQDS in the ZVI + HS01 + AQDS system for DDT transformation are proposed. The quick removal of surface ferric precipitates is thought to be the reason for the enhancement of the transformation of DDT and its intermediates.

Abstract
The transformation of DDT was studied in an anaerobic system of dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (Shewanella decolorationis S12) and iron oxide (alpha-FeOOH). The results showed that S. decolorationis could reduce DDT into DDD, and DDT transformation rate was accelerated by the presence of alpha-FeOOH. DDD was observed as the primary transformation product, which was demonstrated to be transformed in the abiotic system of Fe(2+)+alpha-FeOOH and the system of DIRB+alpha-FeOOH. The intermediates of DDMS and DBP were detected after 9 months, likely suggesting that reductive dechlorination was the main dechlorination pathway of DDT in the iron-reducing system. The enhanced reductive dechlorination of DDT was mainly due to biogenic Fe(II) sorbed on the surface of alpha-FeOOH, which can serve as a mediator for the transformation of DDT. This study demonstrated the important role of DIRB and iron oxide on DDT and DDD transformation under anaerobic iron-reducing environments.

Abstract
Irinotecan hydrochloride (CPT-11) can display severe toxicities in individual cancer patients. CPT-11 is bio-activated through CES, detoxified through UGT1A1 and inhibits TOP1. CPT-11 toxicity and UGT1A1, CES2 and TOP1 mRNAs and UGT1A1 protein were determined in male and female C57BL/6, B6D2F1 and B6CBAF1, as potential models for tailoring CPT-11 delivery. CPT-11 was administered intravenously (40-90 mg/kg/day for 4 days at 7h after light onset). The relations between dose and lethal toxicity or body weight loss were steep and similar in C57BL/6 (lethality, p=0.001; weight loss, p=0.002) and B6D2F1 (p=0.01; p=0.03, respectively), but weak in B6CBAF1. Females displayed less toxicity than males (p<0.001). Mean mRNA expression of UGT1A1 was highest in B6CBAF1 (p=0.039) and in females (p<0.001). Both CES2 and TOP1 varied according to strain and gender (p<0.001). The three gene expression data explained the most severe toxicity of CPT-11 in male B6D2F1, but displayed inconsistent relations with toxicity in the other groups. Mean UGT1A1 protein expression was highest in males as compared to females, and so by approximately 8-fold in C57BL/6 as compared to B6D2F1 (p<0.0001). Genetic background and gender significantly altered the molecular prediction of irinotecan toxicity by UGT1A1, CES2 and TOP1 mRNA expressions.

Abstract
SUMMARY
To test the hypothesis that digestion has a more notable physiological effect on ambush foragers than on active foragers, we investigated the behavioural, digestive and metabolic characteristics, as well as the postprandial locomotory capacity, of four species of juvenile fish distributed along the Yangtze River, China, with distinct foraging strategies. The ambush foraging southern catfish (Silurus meridionlis) had the fewest movements per minute (MPM), lowest per cent time spent moving (PTM), slowest critical swimming speed (Ucrit), lowest maintenance metabolism(V̇O2rest) and lowest maximum locomotory metabolism(V̇O2max). However, the southern catfish had the highest feeding level and maximum feeding metabolism(V̇O2peak) and the greatest decrease in Ucrit after consumption of a large meal. Thus, this fish is highly adapted to its ambush behavioural strategy and sedentary life style. In the herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), a low digestive capacity led to little change in postprandial locomotory performance, which benefits its frequent grazing behaviour. In this species, the greater amount of energy spent on routine activity and avoiding predators versus Ucrit might be related to its herbivorous life style and high predation risk. The active foraging crucian carp(Carassius auratus) adopts a unique high energy cost strategy that allows for high capacity in both routine activity and digestion, and the great flexibility of its cardio-respiratory capacity (increased V̇O2max after feeding) guarantees a small decrease in Ucrit even after maximum feeding. Finally, the sluggish foraging darkbarbel catfish(Pelteobagrus vachelli) has low digestive and locomotory capacity, but its energy-efficient venomous defence strategy may be related to its abundance. These results show that the digestive, behavioural and metabolic strategies differ among these fish species. The locomotory capacity in the sedentary fishes decreased profoundly after feeding, whereas it decreased little or not at all in the active fishes. The maintenance of high locomotory capacity after eating in the active fishes is probably related to a large metabolic capacity, a lower digestive capacity or an improvement in cardio-respiratory capacity after feeding.

Abstract
Seoul virus (SEOV), a member of hantavirus genus, is one of the causative agents of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and afflicts tens of thousands of people annually. In this paper, we evaluate the immune response induced by a replication-competent recombinant canine adenovirus type 2 expressing the Gn protein of SEOV (rCAV-2-Gn) in BALB/c mice. Sera from immunized mice contained neutralizing antibodies that could specifically recognize SEOV and neutralize its infectivity in vitro. Moreover, the recombinant virus induced complete protection against a lethal challenge with the highly virulent SEOV strain CC-2. Protective level neutralizing antibodies were maintained for at least 20 weeks. The efficacy of the recombinant was similar to that induced by a currently available inactivated HFRS vaccine. This recombinant virus is therefore a potential alternative to the inactivated vaccine.

Abstract
The behavior of non-thermal plasma (NTP) and combined plasma catalysis (CPC) was investigated for removal of low-concentration benzene, toluene and p-xylene (BTX mixture) in air using a link tooth wheel-cylinder plasma reactor. Combining NTP with MnO(x)/Al(2)O(3) catalyst after the discharge zone (CPC) significantly promoted BTX conversion and improved the energy efficiency. For a specific input energy (SIE) of 10 JL(-1), the conversion of benzene, toluene and p-xylene reached 94%, 97% and 95%, respectively. The introduction of MnO(x)/Al(2)O(3) catalyst also moved the BTX conversion towards total oxidation and reduced the emission of O(3) and NO(2) as compared to NTP alone. For an SIE of 10 JL(-1), the O(3) outlet concentration decreased from 46.7 for NTP alone to 1.9 ppm for CPC, while the NO(2) emission correspondingly decreased from 1380 to 40 ppb.

Abstract
Phosphorus fractions and phosphate adsorption characteristics of 16 sediments from a shallow freshwater lake (Nansi Lake, China) and its inflow estuaries were investigated. In the present study, the sediment phosphorus is fractionated into exchangeable P (exch-P), Al-P, Fe-P, Ca-P, organic P (OP), inorganic P (IP) and total P (TP). The results show that the total phosphorus (TP) content in the sediments ranges from 571.67 to 1,113.55 mg kg(-1), and calcium bound phosphorus (Ca-P) is the main fraction of IP. The biologically available phosphorus (BAP) ranges from 32.02 to 229.67 mg kg(-1) in the Nansi Lake sediments. Phosphate adsorption on the sediments mainly occurs within 10 h and is completed within 48 h. The content of native adsorbed phosphorus (omega(NAP)) varies greatly from 6.05 to 194.37 mg kg(-1), showing a significant correlation with the total maximal amount of phosphorus adsorbed (TQ(max)). Adsorption efficiency (m) ranges from 574.79 to 3,220.68 l kg(-1) and zero equilibrium phosphorus concentration (C(EPC)) ranges from 0.010 to 0.157 mg l(-1). After the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the inherent phosphorus present in sediments will be a major threat to the diverted water quality and be a predominant factor determining the trophic status of the lake even if the external load is reduced.

Abstract
A simple, sensitive, and accurate spectrophotometric method has been developed for the assay of TRODAT-1 hydrochloride in lyophilized kit. The method is based on the formation of ion-pair association complex of TRODAT-1 with bromothymol blue (BTB) in disodium hydrogen phosphate/citric acid buffer of pH 4.0. The colored product was extracted with chloroform, and measured spectrophotometrically at 414 nm. Beer's law was obeyed in the range of 5-25 microg/ml with molar absorptivity of 2.75 x 10(4) l/mol/cm. Optimization of experimental conditions was described for the method. The proposed method has been successfully applied for the analysis of TRODAT-1 hydrochloride in lyophilized kit. No interference with pharmaceutical excipients was observed.

Abstract
Recent neuroimaging and postmortem studies have reported abnormalities in white matter of schizophrenic brains, suggesting the involvement of oligodendrocytes in the etiopathology of schizophrenia. This view is being supported by gene microarray studies showing the downregulation of genes related to oligodendrocyte function and myelination in schizophrenic brain compared to control subjects. However, there is currently little information available on the response of oligodendrocytes to antipsychotic drugs (APDs), which could be invaluable for corroborating the oligodendrocyte hypothesis. In this study we found: (1) quetiapine (QUE, an atypical APD) treatment in conjunction with addition of growth factors increased the proliferation of neural progenitors isolated from the cerebral cortex of embryonic rats; (2) QUE directed the differentiation of neural progenitors to oligodendrocyte lineage through extracellular signal-related kinases; (3) addition of QUE increased the synthesis of myelin basic protein and facilitated myelination in rat embryonic cortical aggregate cultures; (4) chronic administration of QUE to C57BL/6 mice prevented cortical demyelination and concomitant spatial working memory impairment induced by cuprizone, a neurotoxin. These findings suggest a new neural mechanism of antipsychotic action of QUE, and help to establish a role for oligodendrocytes in the etiopathology and treatment of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Copper films with high density of twin boundaries are known for high mechanical strength with little tradeoff in electrical conductivity. To achieve such a high density, twin lamellae and spacing will be on the nanoscale. In the current study, 10 microm copper films were prepared by pulse electrodeposition with different applied pulse peak current densities and pulse on-times. It was found that the deposits microstructure was dependent on the parameters of pulse plating. Higher energy pulses caused stronger self-annealing effect on grain recrystallization and growth, thus leading to enhanced fiber textures, while lower energy pulses gave rise to more random microstructure in the deposits and rougher surface topography. However in the extremes of pulse currents we applied, the twin densities were not as high as those resulted from the medium or relatively high pulse currents. The highest amount of nanoscale twinning was found to form from a proper degree of self-annealing induced grain structure evolution. The driving force behind the self-annealing is discussed.

Abstract
Interferon (IFN)-alpha is involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus. Studies in murine lupus models have revealed that type I IFN exerts either a protective effect in MRL/lpr, or can detrimentally impact disease progression, as in NZB/W mice. To understand this paradox, we examined the kinetic global gene expression in pre-autoimmune NZB/W-, MRL/lpr- and normal BALB/c-derived splenic mononuclear cells following ex vivo IFN-alpha treatment. Analysis of IFN-alpha-induced gene expression patterns revealed genes associated with antiproliferative activity of IFN-alpha including CDKN1A, GADD45B, pituitary tumor-transforming 1, SCOTIN, ataxia telangiectasia-mutated homolog and calcyclin-binding protein were upregulated in MRL/lpr and/or BALB/c mice. Of IFN-alpha-induced genes differentially expressed in NZB/W vs BALB/c and MRL/lpr mice at 3 h time point, enhanced expression of CCND1, cyclin D2, matrix metalloproteinase 13 and a panel of cytokines and chemokines and impaired expression of negative inflammatory regulators CD69 and an Src family kinase hemopoietic cell kinase were notable. Interestingly, the splenic mononuclear cells from the NZB/W not MRL/lpr lupus-prone mice at the pre-autoimmune stage before ex vivo IFN-alpha treatment, have increased expression of many known IFN-regulated genes. These results provide a unique genomic view of ex vivo IFN-alpha response in two lupus-prone models, and help to have an insight into the role of IFN-alpha in lupus pathogenesis.

Abstract
To understand the degradation of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with existence of iron oxides and polycarboxylic acids in the natural environment, the photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) at the interface of iron oxides under UV illumination was conducted. Four iron oxides were prepared by a hydrothermal process and then sintered at different temperatures of 65, 280, 310, and 420 degrees C named "IO-65," "IO-280," "IO-310," and "IO-420," respectively. The prepared iron oxides were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods. The XRD pattern of IO-65 showed a crystal structure of lepidocrocite (gamma-FeOOH) and that of IO-420 demonstrated a crystal structure of hematite (alpha-Fe(2)O(3)), while IO-280 and IO-310 have the mixed crystal structures of maghemite (gamma-Fe(2)O(3)) and hematite. The BET results revealed that the specific surface areas decreased with the increase of sintering temperature. The results demonstrated that the photodegradation of BPA depends strongly on the properties of iron oxides and oxalate, and pH. The properties of iron oxides influenced strongly the dependence of the BPA degradation on the oxalate concentration. The optimal initial concentrations of oxalate for BPA degradation under UV illumination were determined to be 2.0, 2.0, 2.4, and 2.0 mM for IO-65, IO-280, IO-310, and IO-420, respectively. The first-order kinetic constants k for BPA degradation under UV illumination in the presence of oxalate with the optimal initial concentration are ranked as IO-280>IO-310>IO-65>IO-420. The experiments demonstrated that the optimal pH value should be in the range of 3-4. Furthermore, the dependence of BPA degradation should be also attributable to the formation of the dissolved Fe-oxalate in the solution and the adsorbed Fe-oxalate on the surface of iron oxides, and also the formation of hydrogen peroxide.
