Abstract
A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν¯(e)) from six 2.9 GW(th) reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41 589 (203 809 and 92 912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin(2)2θ(13)=0.090(-0.009)(+0.008) and the first direct measurement of the ν¯(e) mass-squared difference |Δm(ee)2|=(2.59(-0.20)(+0.19))×10(-3) eV2 is obtained using the observed ν¯(e) rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of |Δm(ee)2| is consistent with |Δm(μμ)2| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

Abstract
AIMS This experiment investigated the effects of sub-chronic aluminum chloride (AlCl3) exposure on rat ovaries. MAIN METHODS Eighty female Wistar (5weeks old) rats, weighed 110-120g, were randomly divided into four treatment groups: control group (CG), low-dose group (LG, 64mg/kg BW AlCl3), mid-dose group (MG, 128mg/kg BW AlCl3) and high-dose group (HG, 256mg/kg BW AlCl3). The AlCl3 was administered in drinking water for 120days. The ovarian ultrastructure was observed. The activities of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase and Ca(2+)-ATPase, the contents of Fe, Cu and Zn, and the protein expression of follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) and luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) in the ovary were determined. KEY FINDINGS The results showed that the structure of the ovary was disrupted, the activities of ALP, ACP, SDH, Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase and Ca(2+)-ATPase, the contents of Zn, Fe and the protein expression of FSHR and LHR were lowered, and the content of Cu was increased in AlCl3-treated rats than those in control. SIGNIFICANCE The results indicate that sub-chronic AlCl3 exposure caused the damage of the ovarian structure, the disturbed metabolism of Fe, Zn and Cu and the decreased activities of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase and Ca(2+)-ATPase in the ovary, which could result in suppressed energy supply in the ovary. A combination of suppression of energy supply and reduction of expression of FSHR and LHR could inhibit ovulation and corpus luteum development, leading to infertility in female rats.

Abstract
Paraquat poisoning associates very high mortality rate. Early treatment with hemoperfusion is strongly suggested by animal and human studies. Although the survival benefit of additional immunosuppressive treatment (IST) in combination with hemoperfusion is also reported since 1971, the large-scale randomized control trials to confirm the effects of IST is difficult to be executed. Therefore, we designed this nationwide large-scale population-based retrospective cohort study to investigate the outcome of paraquat poisoning with hemoperfusion and the additional effects of IST combined with hemoperfusion. This nationwide retrospective cohort study utilized data retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. A total of 1811 hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of paraquat poisoning who received hemoperfusion between 1997 and 2009 were enrolled. The mean age of all 1811 study subjects was 47.3 years. 70% was male. The overall survival rate was only 26.4%. Respiratory failure and renal failure were diagnosed in 56.2% and 36% patients. The average frequency of hemoperfusion was twice. IST was added in 42.2% patients. IST significantly increases survival rate (from 24.3% to 29.3%, P<0.001). The combined IST with methylprednisolone, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone associates with the highest survival rate (48%, P<0.001). Moreover, patients younger than 45 years of age in the IST group had the best survival (41.0% vs. 33.7%, p<0.001). Our results support the use of IST with hemoperfusion for paraquat-poisoned patients. The best survival effect of IST is the combination of methylprednisolone, cyclophosphamide and daily dexamethasone, especially in patients with younger age.

Abstract
The magnitude of inbreeding depression within populations is important for the evolution and maintenance of mixed mating systems. However, data are sparse on the magnitude of inbreeding depression in Robinia pseudoacacia. In this study, we compared differences in the mature seed set per fruit, seed mass, germination success, and seedling growth between self- and cross-pollination treatments and estimated the inbreeding depression at 3 stages: seed maturation, seedling emergence, and seedling growth at 10 and 20 weeks. We found that progenies resulting from cross-pollination treatments showed significantly higher fitness than progenies resulting from self-pollination, causing high levels of inbreeding depression. Inbreeding depression was not uniformly manifested, however, over the 3 stages. Inbreeding depression was the greatest between fertilization and seed maturation stage (δ = 0.5419), and the seedling emergence (0.3654) stage was second. No significant differences in seedling growth were observed between selfed and crossed progenies. The cumulative inbreeding depression (δ) across all 3 stages averaged 0.7452. Inbreeding depression may promote outcrossing in R. pseudoacacia by acting as a post-pollination barrier to selfing. The large difference in the seed set between self- and cross-pollination that we detected indicated that inbreeding depression would probably be a reasonable explanation for the high abortion and low seed set in R. pseudoacacia.

Abstract
In this study, an inexact two-stage water resources management model was developed for multi-regional water resources planning in the Nansihu lake Basin, China. Four planning districts, four water users, and five water sources were considered in the optimization model, with net system benefit, recourse cost, water supply cost, and wastewater treatment cost being analyzed. Methods of interval-parameter programming (IPP) and two-stage stochastic programming (TSP) were incorporated into the model to tackle uncertainties described by both interval values and probability distributions. A number of scenarios corresponding to different river inflow levels were examined, and the results indicated that different inflow levels could lead to different water allocation schemes with varied system benefit and system-failure risk. In general, the developed model can provide an effective linkage between economic benefits and the associated penalties attributed to the violation of predefined policies. The modeling results were valuable for supporting the adjustment or justification of the existing water allocation schemes within a complicated water resources system under uncertainty.

Abstract
The changes in the microstructure of ZnO nanowire were studied after exposure to different radiation doses of energetic x-rays. Detailed structural, composition and optical analyses were carried out. It was found that the surface composition changed and defects were formed in the irradiated ZnO nanowires. The structural change of ZnO nanowires after thermal treatment was also studied and similar defects were observed. It is proposed that phonon-induced localized heating is the main reason for the observed changes in microstructure. Finally, the field emission properties of ZnO nanowires before and after x-ray radiation were studied. It was found that the increase of work function and change in morphology induced by the irradiation were the reasons for the observed change in field emission properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested that diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for gallbladder cancer; however, it remains unclear whether DM with or without gallstones increases the risk of gallbladder cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for gallbladder cancer, including sex, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, gallstones, and DM. METHODS The study cohort consisted of 214,179 subjects newly diagnosed with diabetes (cases) collected from the claims data of the Health Insurance Program of Taiwan from 2000 to 2001 who were retrospectively enrolled. The control group consisted of 206,860 subjects without diabetes, matched with the cases for sex, age, and index year. The subjects were followed up until the end of 2008. The effects of the risk factors on the incidence of gallbladder cancer were evaluated with Cox's proportional hazard regression models. RESULTS The risk of gallbladder cancer was higher in the DM group than in the non-DM group, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.53 [95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.22-1.90]. Gallstones were also a risk factor for gallbladder cancer, with an HR of 2.52 (95 % CI 1.11-5.73). DM and gallstones were synergistic risk factors for gallbladder cancer (p < 0.0001), with an HR of 5.37 (95 % CI 3.17-9.10) for subjects with both diseases in relation to those with neither of these conditions. CONCLUSIONS In the present long-term cohort study, DM with or without gallstones increased the risk of gallbladder cancer. Gallstones were independently related to gallbladder cancer, and DM and gallstones were synergistic risk factors for gallbladder cancer.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown an indirect link between platelet count and blood vessel metastasis, but this association with lymphatic vessels metastasis has not been established in NSCLC. So we investigated whether an association exists between preoperative platelet count and lymph node metastasis in NSCLC patients. Between January 2001 and January 2011, platelet counts were obtained from 883 NSCLC patients who were resistant to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. The preoperative platelet counts, tumor metastasis, and overall survival of NSCLC patients were analyzed for correlations via statistical analysis. Upon considering patients according to their TNM lymph node metastasis stage (N0-N3), multiple comparison analyses revealed that the mean preoperative platelet count of the N0 group was significantly lower than that of the N1-N3. Analysis of variance showed that the preoperative platelet count of patients in stage I was significantly lower than that of those in stages II, III, and IV, with no significant difference among the latter three stages. According to the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, the overall survival of patients with platelet counts <214.5 × 109/L was significantly longer than that of those with platelet counts ≥214.5 × 109/L. Cox regression analysis indicated that, besides preoperative platelet count, patient age, gender, and TNM stage were independent prognostic factors. In conclusion, preoperative platelet count was significantly associated with metastasis of lymph nodes in NSCLC patients. Preoperative platelet count may be a reliable biomarker of lymph node metastasis possibility and an independent prognostic factor of overall survival in patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
Methyl tortuoate D (1), together with five other known related bis-cembranoids, was isolated from Hainan soft coral Sarcophyton tortuosum. The structure of methyl tortuoate D (1a), firstly isolated and reported by Li et al. from the title organism, was corrected as 1 by an extensive analysis of its one-dimensional and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance data and by comparison with those reported in the literature. In addition, lobophytone K (1b), recently isolated from Hainan soft coral Lobophytum pauciflorum by Lin et al., was proved to be the same compound as 1 and 1a. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by comparing its electronic circular dichroism curve with that of co-occurring ximaolide A (2).

Abstract
This Letter presents a multiview phase shifting (MPS) framework for full-resolution and high-speed reconstruction of arbitrary shape dynamic objects. Unlike conventional methods, this framework can directly find the corresponding points from the wrapped phase-maps. Therefore, only a minimum number of images are required for phase shifting to measure arbitrary shape objects, including discontinuous surfaces. Benefit from phase shifting MPS can achieve full spatial resolution and high, accurate 3D reconstruction. Benefit from multiview constraint MPS is also robust to discontinuities. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed technique.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The effect of human parathyroid hormone 1-34 (PTH) and zoledronic acid (ZA) alone or in combination on bone healing in osteoporotic settings was tested using implants inserted in tibiae of ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Combination therapy promoted bone healing more than each treatment alone 12 weeks after implant insertion. INTRODUCTION PTH and ZA have been demonstrated to be effective on implant fixation. However, reports about the combined use of PTH and ZA for promotion of bone healing around implant in osteoporotic settings are still limited. This study aims to investigate effects of PTH+ZA on implant stabilization in OVX rats. METHODS Twelve weeks after bilateral ovariectomy, OVX rats randomly received implants without or with ZA (by immersion in 1 mg/ml ZA solution for 24 h). Subsequently, half of the animals from each group also received subcutaneous injections of PTH (60 μg/kg, three times a week) for 12 weeks. Thus, there were four groups: control, PTH, ZA, and PTH+ZA. RESULTS All treatments promoted bone healing around implant compared to control, but PTH+ZA treatment showed significantly stronger effects than PTH or ZA alone in histological, micro-CT, and biomechanical tests. CONCLUSION The results indicated the additive effects of PTH and ZA on implant fixation in OVX rats; it was suggested that the anabolic effect of PTH was potent and not blunted by ZA during bone healing around implant when used concurrently.

Abstract
Acute renal failure (ARF) is a rapid loss of kidney function. The reasons and mechanism by which this occurs has not been clarified so far thus creating obstacles to management of this disease. Presently, the experimental research using the accepted renal ischemia reperfusion injury (I/R injury) model represented for ARF focuses on several possible relevant factors such as reactive oxygen species, no-reflow phenomenon, apoptosis and extensive inflammatory response. The latter is much talked about currently. Some intracellular danger sensing proteins, such as the nucleotide binding domain leucine rich repeats-containing family proteins known as NLRs, adjust the inflammatory response through the formation of a multi-protein complex known as an inflammasome. The most classic family member of this complex is NALP3 confirmed to serve as a contributor to I/R injury. However, how it contributes to the pathology remains obscure. The extensive inflammatory response is considered to be modulated by the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway. NOD2, another family member of NLR, which shares similar structure with NALP3, indicated that it induced the activation of MAPK in response to a pathogen, thus we assumed that NALP3 performed the harmful process of I/R injury, resulting probably from the activation of the MAPK signaling pathway. If this hypothesis proves to be correct, it might benefit the management of ARF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This case-control study investigates the role of xenobiotic-metabolizing genes, including glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) and 2E1 (CYP2E1), in the susceptibility to oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). METHODS The genotypes of GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1, CYP1A1*2C, and CYP2E1 PstI/RsaI polymorphisms were determined for 217 OPMD cases and 492 age- and sex-matched controls from a Taiwanese penitentiary. RESULTS Compared to the GSTM1-present genotype, the GSTM1-null genotype was significantly associated with increased risk of leukoplakia (odds ratio [OR]=1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.01-2.10). Similarly, compared to the CYP1A1*2C A/G+G/G genotype, the CYP1A1*2C A/A genotype was significantly associated with increased risk of leukoplakia (OR=1.64, 95% CI=1.12-2.40), particularly for smokers consuming > 13 pack-years of cigarettes (OR=2.40, 95% CI=1.40-4.11) (Interaction P=0.039). In addition, participants with 4-5 risk genotypes (OR > 1) experienced higher risks for leukoplakia than those with 0-1 risk genotypes (OR=3.19, 95% CI=1.65-6.15) (Trend test P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the CYP1A1*2C A/A genotype may increase the risk of leukoplakia, especially for heavy smokers. Xenobiotic-metabolizing genes may simultaneously modulate this disease risk. These observations require further confirmation with larger samples.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al) is widely used in daily life and will lead to environmental release and exposure. The toxicity of Al had been documented, and which attracted a growing concern on human and animal health. The immune system appears to be sensitive to Al exposure. But few studies focused on the potential immunological responses induced by Al. It is imperative to study the effects of Al on the immune function and this review discusses the effects of Al on autoimmunity, oral tolerance, expression of the immune cells, hypersensitivity and erythrocyte immune function. It will provide evidence to study the association between Al and immune function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diadenosine 5',5'''-P(1),P(4)-tetraphosphate (Ap(4)A), a natural compound stored in platelet dense granules, inhibits ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Ap(4)A inhibits the platelet ADP receptors P2Y(1) and P2Y(12), is a partial agonist of P2Y(12), and is a full agonist of the platelet ATP-gated ion channel P2X1. Modification of the Ap(4)A tetraphosphate backbone enhances inhibition of ADP-induced platelet aggregation. However, the effects of these Ap(4)A analogs on human platelet P2Y(1), P2Y(12) and P2X1 are unclear. OBJECTIVE To determine the agonist and antagonist activities of diadenosine tetraphosphate analogs towards P2Y(1), P2Y(12), and P2X1. METHODS We synthesized the following Ap(4)A analogs: P(1),P(4)-dithiotetraphosphate; P(2),P(3)-chloromethylenetetraphosphate; P(1)-thio-P(2),P(3)-chloromethylenetetraphosphate; and P(1),P(4)-dithio-P(2),P(3)-chloromethylenetetraphosphate. We then measured the effects of these analogs on: (i) ADP-induced platelet aggregation; (ii) P2Y(1)-mediated changes in cytosolic Ca(2+); (iii) P2Y(12)-mediated changes in vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein phosphorylation; and (iv) P2X1-mediated entry of extracellular Ca(2+). RESULTS Ap(4)A analogs with modifications in the phosphate backbone inhibited both P2Y(1) and P2Y(12), and showed no agonist activity towards these receptors. The dithio modification increased inhibition of P2Y(1), P2Y(12), and platelet aggregation, whereas the chloromethylene modification increased inhibition of P2Y(12) and platelet aggregation, but decreased P2Y(1) inhibition. Combining the dithio and chloromethylene modifications increased P2Y(1) and P2Y(12) inhibition. As compared with Ap(4)A, each modification decreased agonist activity towards P2X1, and the dual modification completely eliminated P2X1 agonist activity. CONCLUSIONS As compared with Ap(4)A, tetraphosphate backbone analogs of Ap(4)A have diminished activity towards P2X1 but inhibit both P2Y(1) and P2Y(12) and, with greater potency, inhibit ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Thus, diadenosine tetraphosphate analogs with dual receptor selectivity may have potential as antiplatelet drugs.

Abstract
The supramolecular interaction of nile blue sulphate (NBS) with nucleic acids was studied by investigating the characteristics of the interaction absorption spectra on the basis of the drug binding process in organic system in which small amount of drug interacting with large amount of biological macromolecules involves, and an accordingly binding model for organic dyes with large amount of macromolecules was established. At pH 7.40 and ionic strength 0.004, the H-aggregation of NBS occurs with increasing NBS concentration. The NBS aggregates can be bound to both calf thymus DNA and fish sperm DNA by the ratio of each nucleotide residue with a molecule of NBS if the concentration of DNAs is more than 15-fold excessive. The corresponding binding constant for the interaction of NBS with DNAs is about 10(3) order, with which thermodynamic parameters for the interactions, such as the change of free energy, enthalpy and entropy at 25 degrees C, were calculated. It was found that the binding of NBS with thermally denatured DNA is similar to that with native yeast RNA, which indicates H-aggregation of NBS can be encouraged by single stranded nucleic acids.

Abstract
One possibility to increase the organ pool is to use grafts from hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive donors, but few data are currently available in this setting. Herein, we reviewed the outcome of 92 liver transplantations using allografts from HBsAg-positive donors in the United States (1990-2009). They had experienced HBV-related (n = 68) or HBV-unrelated disease (n = 24). There was no difference between patients who received HBsAg-positive versus HBsAg-negative allografts based on age, Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, length of stay, wait time, and donor risk index. HBsAg-positive allografts were more likely to be imported and used in MELD exceptional cases. Allograft and patient survival were comparable between the two groups. HBsAg-positive allografts deserve consideration when no other organ is available in a suitable waiting time in the present era of highly effective antiviral therapy.

Abstract
Background Previous research has shown variation in the effects of patient factors, including hepatic necroinflammatory activity, on liver stiffness measurement (LSM). This prospective study attempts to identify explanatory factors for LSM in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) technology. Methods A cohort of 127 Taiwanese patients with CHC underwent ARFI LSM and immediate percutaneous liver biopsy. This study compares the concurrent diagnostic performances of LSM and FibroTest using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Three multiple linear regression models were used to evaluate the significance of concurrent patient factors in explaining LSM. Results To classify METAVIR fibrosis (F) stages, the areas under ROC curves (AUCs) were ARFI LSM, 0.847 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.779-0.914) and FibroTest, 0.823 (95% CI, 0.748-0.898), for F1 versus F2-4; ARFI LSM, 0.902 (95% CI, 0.835-0.970) and FibroTest, 0.812 (95% CI, 0.735-0.888), for F1-2 versus F3-4; ARFI LSM, 0.831 (95% CI, 0.723-0.939) and FibroTest, 0.757 (95% CI, 0.648-0.865), for F1-3 versus F4. After adjusting for other demographic and biological covariates, biochemical and histological necroinflammatory factors consistently explained LSM. Factors included serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT)/upper limit of normal (ULN) categories (model R2 = 0.661, adjusted R2 = 0.629), ActiTest A scores (R2 = 0.662, adjusted R2 = 0.636), and METAVIR activity (A) grades (R2 = 0.651, adjusted R2 = 0.620). METAVIR F stages, body mass index, and platelet count were also independently associated with LSM. Necroinflammatory degrees, including ALT/ULN, ActiTest A scores, and METAVIR A grades, explained the false positivity of liver fibrosis staging using ARFI LSM. Conclusions The degree of hepatic necroinflammatory activity independently and significantly exaggerated liver fibrosis evaluation using ARFI LSM. However, comparisons with concurrent FibroTest indicate that ARFI LSM may be a promising alternative, or adjunctive single indicator, for liver fibrosis evaluation in patients with CHC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the effects of gender on the three-dimensional (3D) bone mineral density (BMD) and micromorphology of the trabeculae of matured autogenous bone grafts after sinus floor augmentation, and compared them to those of adjacent native bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten bone biopsy samples were removed from the implant placement areas of patients who had received second-stage sinus floor augmentation, and analyzed by microcomputed tomography. BMD phantoms with two calcium hydroxyapatite densities (0.25 and 0.75 g/cm(3)) were used to determine the BMD of the grafted and native bone samples. The 3D structural parameters of the trabeculae, including percentage of bone volume (bone volume/tissue volume, BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number, trabecular separation, trabecular pattern factor (Tb.Pf), and structure model index, were analyzed between males and females and between grafted bone and native bone. RESULTS No significant gender-specific differences in BMD and 3D trabecular structure of either native or grafted bone were found (P > 0.05). Compared to the adjacent native bone, the autogenous grafted bone exhibited lower BV/TV and Tb.Th as well as a higher Tb.Pf (P < 0.05). Additionally, there was a weak positive correlation between the Tb.Th values of grafted and native bone (R (2) = 0.58). CONCLUSIONS In the maxillary sinus, autogenous grafted bone exhibited lower BV/TV, Tb.Th, and trabecular connectivity than the adjacent native bone. No significant gender-specific differences were found for either the BMD or 3D trabecular structure of grafted bone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE After bone remodeling, autogenous grafted bone revealed different 3D trabecular structure as compared to native bone.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Ovariectomized (OVX) rats with tibial fracture received vehicle, ZA, PTH, or ZA plus PTH treatment for 4 and 8 weeks. Bone metabolism, callus formation, and the mass of undisturbed bone tissue were evaluated by serum analysis, histology, immunohistochemistry, radiography, micro-computerized tomography, and biomechanical test. INTRODUCTION Previous studies have demonstrated the effect of ZA or PTH on osteoporotic fracture healing. However, reports about effects of ZA plus PTH on callus formation of osteoporotic fracture were limited. This study was designed to investigate the impact of combined treatment with ZA and PTH on fracture healing in OVX rats. METHODS Twelve weeks after bilateral ovariectomy, all rats underwent unilateral transverse osteotomy on tibiae. Animals then randomly received vehicle, ZA (1.5 μg/kg weekly), PTH (60 μg/kg, three times a week), or ZA plus PTH until death at 4 and 8 weeks. The blood and bilateral tibiae of rats were harvested for evaluation. RESULTS All treatments increased callus formation and strength other than the control; ZA + PTH showed the strongest effects on percent bone volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness, total fluorescence-marked callus area, and biomechanical strength. Additionally, inhibited RANKL and enhanced osteoprotegerin expression were observed in the ZA + PTH group. But no difference in bone mineral density and BV/TV of the contralateral tibiae was observed between treated groups. CONCLUSION Findings in this study suggested an additive effect of ZA and PTH on fracture healing in OVX rats, and this additive effect was specific to callus formation, not to undisturbed bone tissue.

Abstract
The special flavor and health effects of chicken essence are being widely accepted by people. Scientific researches are revealing its truth as a tonic food in traditional health preservation. Chicken essence has been found to possess many bioactivities including relief of stress and fatigue, amelioration of anxiety, promotion of metabolisms and post-partum lactation, improvement on hyperglycemia and hypertension, enhancement of immune, and so on. These activities of chicken essence are suggested to be related with its active components, including proteins, dipeptides (such as carnosine and anserine), polypeptides, minerals, trace elements, and multiple amino acids, and so on. Underlying mechanisms responsible for the bioactivities of chicken essence are mainly related with anti-stress, anti-oxidant, and neural regulation effects. However, the mechanisms are complicated and may be mediated via the combined actions of many active components, more than the action of 1 or 2 components alone.

Abstract
A blocking ELISA based on the monoclonal antibody (MAb) 1A7 was developed to detect antibodies against Mycoplasma suis. The MAb was produced by immunising BALB/c mice with recombinant MSG1 protein (rMSG1) from M. suis expressed in E. coli. Following identification by Western blotting, the MAb was purified and labelled with horseradish peroxidase. The parameters of the ELISA were optimised, and the cut-off value determined as 36.35% by analysing the percentage inhibition of M. suis negative serum. The sensitivity and specificity of the ELISA were 92% and 100%, respectively. In repeatability tests, the intra- and inter-batch variation coefficients were <10%. The results suggest this blocking ELISA is specific, sensitive and reproducible, and will be a valuable tool in the serodiagnosis of M. suis infection in pigs.

Abstract
AIM This study describes the relationship between symptoms and quality of life in patients with malignant fungating wounds. BACKGROUND Malignant fungating wounds are complex wounds that can bleed, become malodorous due to infection and are painful causing physical and psychological distress. However, there is a lack of literature on the impact that such wounds can have on quality of life. METHODS This was a descriptive, cross-sectional multi-centre study of patients with malignant fungating wounds. Participants were recruited from the palliative care, hospice, outpatient clinic and oncology units of three medical centres in Taiwan. Data were collected from February 2008 to August 2009. A structured questionnaire obtained socio-demographic information, medical details, wound assessment information and the Taiwanese version of the McGill quality of life questionnaire was administered by interview. RESULTS McGill quality of life scores indicated that the participants had the lowest quality of life. The participant's age, dressing change frequency, pain, wound dressing comfort, wound symptom, bleeding and malodour had statistically significant negative correlations with quality of life. Multiple regression analysis showed that age, malodour, pain issues and psychological issues explained 87% of the total variance in quality of life. CONCLUSION This study contributes to our understanding of the impact of malignant fungating wounds and how correct assessment and management is necessary to improve quality of life. Educational intervention research is needed for patients and caregivers in countries where this has not yet been performed. Further research should also identify whether nursing competence has a direct impact on quality of life.
