Abstract
Hereditary angioedema caused by C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disorder. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of potentially life-threatening swellings without itching localized in the dermis and submucosa. We report a case of 41 years old woman with hereditary angioedema manifested as episodes of localized skin swellings and painful gastrointestinal colics. This report underlines the fact that hereditary angioedema is underdiagnosed in differential diagnoses. If hereditary angioedema is correctly diagnosed, effective treatment highly improving patients' quality of life is available.

Abstract
Hereditary angioedema is a rare genetic disorder resulting from an inherited deficiency or dysfunction of the C1 inhibitor. It is characterized by recurrent, circumscribed, and self-limiting episodes of cutaneous and mucous membrane swelling involving different organs. Hereditary angioedema may present with diverse clinical pictures, even within families with the same mutation. We present a first reported case of type 1 hereditary angioedema in a young woman presenting as recurrent abdominal pain associated with ascites without any other clinical features of hereditary angioedema, with initial presentation in puerperium. The recognition or awareness of hereditary angioedema as a cause of acute and/or recurrent abdominal pain associated with ascites is important, and may avoid unnecessary invasive procedures and facilitate appropriate treatment.

Abstract
Until recently, it was assumed that hereditary angioedema was a disease resulting exclusively from a genetic deficiency of the C1 inhibitor. In 2000, families with hereditary angioedema, normal C1 inhibitor activity, and protein in plasma were described. Since then, numerous patients and families with this condition have been reported. Most of the patients were women. In many of the affected women, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy containing estrogens, and pregnancies triggered the clinical symptoms. In some families, mutations in the coagulation factor XII (Hageman factor) gene were detected in the affected persons.

Abstract
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder, manifested by recurrent bouts of swelling in various tissues. The biochemical basis leading to HAE manifestations is either a quantitative or qualitative deficiency in plasma C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH). Its proposed physiological role is regulation of vascular permeability, by inhibiting certain steps in the complement, coagulation and the fibrinolytic pathways. Recent evidence implies that bradykinin, a plasma kinin, is the main mediator of HAE, Leading to vasodilatation and hyperpermeability of small vessels. Bradykinin receptors have been recently identified, Leading to significant progress in our understanding of the physiologic mechanisms leading to edema. HAE is characterized by edema of the extremities, face, tongue, Larynx, genitalia and severe abdominal pains. Edema of the tongue and Larynx are life-threatening, and fataloutcomes have been described. Diagnosis of HAE is frequently missed, due to the rarity, non-specific symptoms and lack of awareness of physicians to the diagnosis and treatment. In this review, the authors describe the mechanisms of HAE and the clinical approach to diagnosis and management, according to accepted international guidelines. Furthermore, new treatment modalities that have recently been developed are presented: novel molecules targeting bradykinin, either by inhibiting its generation from plasma kininogens or by direct inhibition of its specific receptors on blood vessels, replacement therapy with human recombinant C1-INH produced in transgenic rabbits. HAE is a chronic disabling diseasewith serious consequences for the patients and their families, severely affecting the quality of life. Recently, new clinical guidelines were published and treatment centers, specializing in the management of HAE were established. The authors are convinced that the increased awareness of the medical staff, in addition to new data and novel treatments, will reduce the burden of the disease, improve its grim prognosis and enable a better quality of life for HAE patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disorder characterized by highly variable, acute attacks of swelling at various anatomical locations. Clinical measures do not adequately assess the diversity of symptoms characteristic of an attack. Two disease-specific, patient-reported outcome measures were developed to comprehensively capture symptom severity and change: the Treatment Outcome Score (TOS) and the Mean Symptom Complex Severity (MSCS) score. METHODS This study comprised a secondary analysis of pooled data from a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the psychometric properties, including reliability and validity, and minimally important difference (MID) of the TOS and MSCS score. RESULTS HAE patients (n = 73) had a mean age of 33 years, and 60% were female. Test-retest evaluation demonstrated moderate to substantial agreement (ICCs = 0.53 for TOS; 0.62 for MSCS score). The TOS and change in MSCS score were moderately to highly correlated with a Global Improvement Measure at 4 h (TOS: r = 0.90; MSCS: r = -0.59). Anchor- and distribution-based analyses suggested that conservative estimates for MID are 30 points for TOS and -0.30 points for 4-h change in MSCS score. CONCLUSIONS The psychometric tests performed here provide evidence of the reliability and validity of the TOS and MSCS for evaluating symptom severity and change in HAE patients. The TOS and MSCS score provide an example of measurement methodology that may be used to precisely capture symptom severity and change in a disease characterized by acute attacks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hereditary angioedema is an autosomal dominant inherited condition that is characterized by the local development of edema of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and the walls of almost any organ, including the gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tracts. OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of six controlled patients with hereditary angioedema. PATIENTS AND METHODS This paper presents clinical characteristics of six patients, four of them members of the same family, and two, isolated, non-family related cases. This contribution is a review of the latest literature related to diagnosis and treatment of hereditary angioedema. RESULTS Hereditary angioedema is a rare clinical entity that has a complicated manifestation profile that requires to discard a wide series of differential diagnosis. Deeper knowledge of its genetics and physiopathology will allow us to explore new treatment alternatives in addition to those already available. CONCLUSIONS By diffusion of isolated cases or familial cases series, as presented in this paper, the disease recognition and timely treatment will be reached.

Abstract
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare, but potentially life-threatening condition, clinically characterized by recurrent and self-limiting episodes of swelling which affect the skin, gastrointestinal tract and upper airways, and are caused by a lack of complement-C1-inhibitor (C1-INH). Within the past ten years, two Danish HAE patients have died from laryngeal oedema. We report two cases that illustrate symptoms and differential diagnostic problems posed by this disease, and the importance of an effective treatment strategy.

Abstract
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare but important disease because of the occurrence of life-threatening symptoms during attacks as well as due to diagnostic and therapeutic problems. Deficiency or absence of plasma protein--C1 esterase inhibitor is autosomal dominant condition and is connected with uncontrolled complement and contact systems activation which leads to the generation of vasoactive mediators, most likely bradykinin. The main syndromes are recurrent attacks of localized swelling of submucosal and subcutaneous tissue, or both. In consequence skin and visceral organs may be involved by the typically massive local edema without pruritus. Authors discuss epidemiology, pathophysiology, genetics and classification of angioedema also with regard to its triggers and localization. This paper also reviews clinical symptoms diversity, diagnostic methods and type differentiation for HAE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide a context to understand the opportunity for novel therapeutic modalities to transform the treatment of hereditary angioedema (HAE). DATA SOURCES MEDLINE and PubMed were searched to identify studies involving current treatment of HAE in the United States. STUDY SELECTION Studies were selected based on their relevance to the treatment of HAE. RESULTS The current HAE treatment strategy is far from satisfactory, and its limitations create an unmet clinical need. Current prophylactic treatment exposes patients with HAE to significant risk of adverse effects, and the efficacy of prophylactic treatment, although generally good, is far from perfect. CONCLUSIONS No specific treatment is currently available in the United States for acute HAE attacks that will reliably work, resulting in a significant unmet clinical need. The emergence of several promising drugs for the treatment of HAE attacks is, thus, an extraordinarily important development in the management of these patients.

Abstract
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a condition that results from an autosomal dominant trait. It manifests as attacks of swelling involving the extremities, trunk, abdominal viscera, face, neck, or airway. The attacks may occur spontaneously, without any identifiable trigger, or may be the result of a specific trigger, such as a minor tissue trauma. The symptoms of an attack range from abdominal discomfort to a swelling of the upper extremities to a laryngeal edema that can lead to severe airway obstruction. Therapy for HAE can be divided into three distinct phases: treatment for acute attacks, short-term prophylaxis, and long-term prophylaxis. Treatment for an acute attack is largely supportive, including administration of epinephrine and antihistamines to maintain a patent, reliable airway. Shortterm prophylaxis includes fresh frozen plasma and corticosteroids. Long-term prophylaxis includes use of androgens and antifibrinolytics, as well as the avoidance of known triggers. Prior to the advent of such therapies, mortality from an acute attack of HAE was reported as high as 30%. Repeated episodes of unexplained cutaneous edema or abdominal discomfort may be caused by HAE. The nurse's role focuses on prevention of complications and supportive care, as well as education of the patient to minimize risk factors that may cause further episodes.
