It is anticipated that the consumption of meat will eventually show a marked decrease for reasons of scarcity, economic and ethics. This will be made possible by developments in protein technology, For the time being, poultry production can still be expected to expand, particularly in developing countries. Veterinary supervision of the production and processing of poultry is of importance for two reasons: (1) control of quality for the consumers; (2) control of diseases of poultry for the producers. A number of zoonoses in poultry are briefly reviewed. As a rule, they do not constitute a serious hazard to man but they also cannot be posibility ruled out by inspection. Veterinary inspection of poultry has a more general hygienic significance. A number of European regulations are discussed. More effective antemortem inspection, truly equal application of regulations in all EEC countries and adequate education of consumers regarding hygienic handling of poultry products in the household are advocated.

[Various aspects of current evolution of zoonoses]

The author analyzes current pecularities attending the clinico-epidemiological characteristics of a number of zoonozes as a mainifestation of the process of their socially conditioned evolution. Possible sequelae of the anthropogenic transformation of the surrounding environment for the dynamics of the nozoareals of the zoonosis infections are considered.

[Case report on a Toxocara-canis infection of the human eye (solitary granuloma) (author's transl)]

Description of one case of an intraocular Toxocara-canis infection. It deals with a so-called solitary granuloma at the posterior pole of the eye. An infection with this parasit of world-wide distribution is probably more frequently than commonly supposed. The prognosis of the disease is unfavourable in most cases. The diagnoses of a larva migrans visceralis infection is possible by Lamina's Microprecipitation-Test on the living larva. It is an immune-biological and species specific test. The treatment is Minzolum¿ perhaps in combination with a corticosteroid or photocoagulation.

Monitoring mouse stocks for lymphocytic chloriomeningitis virus--a human pathogen

Wild house mice ( Mus musculus) persistently infected with high titres of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (tolerant infection) are the source of human inapparent and overt infections, the latter sometimes being of a serious nature. Infections have also occurred in laboratory staff studying the virus and in others handling biological materials contaminated with it. The literature is reviewed.

Great Britain is one of the countries in which pockets of infected wild house mice exist, and these can be a source of infection for laboratory mouse colonies within which congenital transmission through tolerantly infected females would be the main method of spread. Overt signs of the infection may not be detected in mice, and absence of the infection would be certain only if 100% of the litters from which future breeding stock are to be selected were monitored for infectivity and maintained in isolation from unmonitored mice. A suitable monitoring technique is described.

It must be the aim of all breeders of mice to eliminate the possibility of their colonies being a potential hazard to human health. The life-long high infectivity of tolerantly infected mice provides a long-term source of infection for those who handle them and for other biological materials in which the virus can persist without recognition.
