Abstract
Three normalized cDNA libraries were constructed, two of which were constructed from reproductive tissues ovary and testis, and the other one from pooled immune tissues including head kidney, intestine, liver and spleen. A total of 10 542 clones were sequenced generating 10 128 expressed sequence tags (ESTs). Cluster analysis indicated a total of 5808 unique sequences including 1712 contigs and 4096 singletons. A total of 4249 (73%) of the unique ESTs had significant hits to the non-redundant protein database, 2253 of which were annotated using Gene Ontology (GO) terms. A total of 311 microsatellites (with 246 having sufficient flanking sequences for primer design) and 6294 putative SNPs were identified. These genome resources provide the material basis for future microarray development, marker validation and genetic linkage and QTL analysis.

Abstract
In this study, we show how Y-specific interspersed multilocus microsatellites, which are loci that yield several amplified bands differing in size from the same male individual and PCR reaction, are a powerful source of information for tracing the history of cattle. Our results confirm the existence of three main groups of sires, which are separated by evolutionary time and clearly predate domestication. These three groups are consistent with the haplogroups previously identified by Götherström et al. (2005) using five Y-specific segregating sites: Y1 and Y2 in taurine (Bos taurus) cattle and Y3 in zebu (Bos indicus) cattle. The zebu cattle cluster clearly originates from a domestication process that was geographically and temporally separated from that of taurine clusters. Our analyses further suggest that: (i) introgression of wild sire genetic material into domesticated herds may have a significant role in the formation of modern cattle, including the formation of the Y1 haplogroup; (ii) a putative domestication event in Africa probably included local Y2-like wild sires; (iii) the West African zebu cattle Y-chromosome may have partially originated from an ancient introgression of humped cattle into Africa; and (iv) the high genetic similarity among Asian zebu sires is consistent with a single domestication process.

Abstract
It is known that dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) is processed into NH(2)- and COOH-terminal fragments, but its key cleavage site has not been identified, nor has its full-length form been discovered. The objectives of this study were to identify the key cleavage site during DSPP processing and to search for full-length DSPP in vivo. We generated a construct encoding DSPP, in which Asp(452), a cleavage site residue, was replaced by Ala(452). The pulp-odontoblast complex and dentin were extracted, chromatographically separated, and assessed by Stains-All staining, Western immunoblotting, and mass spectrometry. These studies showed that the substitution of Asp(452) by Ala(452) completely blocks the cleavage of mouse DSPP in the transfected cells, indicating that the NH(2)-terminal peptide bond of Asp(452) is essential for the initiation of DSPP proteolytic processing. The results of this study revealed the presence of full-length DSPP and its processed fragments in extracts from the pulp/odontoblast and dentin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have reported that homocysteine (Hcy) is associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease without special biomarkers for early diagnosis. Here, we examined the levels of Hcy, folic acid and its metabolic molecule 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) in SOD1(G93A) transgenic mouse model of ALS in an attempt to determine whether the change in those molecules can be used as potential biomarkers for the disease. METHODS According to the disease progression, SOD1(G93A) transgenic mice were divided into early stage group (30d); pre-symptom group (60d); symptom group (90d) and terminal stage group (120d). LC-MS/MS was used to measure the level of Hcy, folic acid and 5-MTHF in the plasma, spinal cord and cortex of the ALS transgenic SOD1(G93A) mice at different disease stages. Nissl staining was used to detect the motor neurons survival in the anterior horn of the spinal cord of the SOD1(G93A) mice. RESULTS In this study, we demonstrated that the level of 5-MTHF is significantly decreased in the plasma, spinal cord and cortex at the early stages of pre-symptomatic ALS transgenic SOD1(G93A) mice while folic acid is decreased at the middle to late stages of the disease. Furthermore, we found that the level of Hcy is markedly elevated after the motor symptoms appeared in the ALS mice. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that decreased 5-MTHF level may be a potential biomarker for the early stage of the disease in the ALS mice, which may warrant further validating study of 5-MTHF level in ALS patients.

Abstract
The genus Populus has a wide distribution in different climatic zones. Besides its economic and ecological relevance, Populus also serves as a model for elucidating physiological and molecular mechanisms of stress tolerance in tree species. In this review, adaptation strategies of poplars to excess soil salinity are addressed at different scales, from the cellular to the whole-plant level. Striking differences in salt tolerance exist among different poplar species and ecotypes, with Populus euphratica being outstanding in this respect. Key mechanisms identified in this species to mediate salt tolerance are compartmentalisation of Cl(-) in the vacuoles of the root cortex cells, diminished xylem loading of NaCl, activation of Na(+) extrusion into the soil solution under stress, together with simultaneously avoiding excessive K(+) loss by regulation of depolarisation-activated cation channels. This leads to improved maintenance of the K(+)/Na(+) balance, a crucial precondition for survival under salt stress. Leaf cells of this species are able to compartmentalise Na(+) preferentially in the apoplast, whereas in susceptible poplar species, as well as in crop plants, vacuolar Na(+) deposition precedes apoplastic transport. ABA, Ca(2+)and ROS are involved in stress sensing, with higher or faster activation of defences in tolerant than in susceptible poplar species. P. euphratica develops leaf succulence after prolonged salt exposure as a plastic morphological adaptation that leads to salt dilution. Transgenic approaches to improve salt tolerance by transformation of candidate genes have had limited success, since salt tolerance is a multigenic trait. In future attempts towards increased salt resistance, barriers between different poplar sections must be overcome and application of novel biotechnological tools, such as gene stacking, are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE rtPA is an effective treatment for AIS, yet it is substantially underused due to the increased risk of HT. Recent work suggests that permeability-related information can be extracted from routine T2*-based perfusion images by measuring the rR of the contrast agent. Given that other T2*-based measures have recently been proposed, the purpose of this study was to evaluate 4 such permeability measures in identifying patients with AIS who will proceed to HT. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighteen patients with AIS were examined within a mean of 3.3 +/- 1.4 hours postonset. Dynamic T2*-weighted imaging consisted of a single-shot EPI following a bolus of gadodiamide. HT was determined on follow-up CT or MR imaging at 24-72 hours. Mean values of rR, Peak Height, Recovery, as well as Slope were calculated and analyzed on the basis of follow-up HT status. RESULTS Eight patients proceeded to HT. The mean rR for patients with HT was significantly greater than that for patients without HT (0.22 +/- 0.06 versus 0.14 +/- 0.06, P = .006), while there was a trend toward decreased %Recovery in patients with HT (76 +/- 6 versus 82 +/- 11%, P = .092). There was a significant negative correlation between %Recovery and rR (r = -0.88, P < .001). No significant differences or trends were detected with respect to Peak Height or Slope. CONCLUSIONS Both rR and %Recovery can be readily extracted from a routine perfusion MR imaging dataset and show potential for identifying HT during the acute phase poststroke.

Abstract
AIMS This paper developed a novel process for lactic acid and chitin co-production of the pelletized Rhzious oryzae NRRL 395 fermentation using underutilized cull potatoes and glucose as nutrient source. METHODS AND RESULTS Whole potato hydrolysate medium was first used to produce the highest pelletized biomass yield accompanying the highest chitin content in biomass. An enhanced lactic acid production then followed up using batch, repeated batch and fed batch culture with glucose as carbon source and mixture of ammonia and sodium hydroxide as neutralizer. The lactic acid productivity peaked at 2.8 and 3 g l(-1 )h(-1) in repeated batch culture and batch culture, respectively. The fed batch culture had the highest lactate concentration of 140 g l(-1). CONCLUSIONS Separation of the biomass cultivation and the lactic acid production is able to not only improve lactic acid production, but also enhance the chitin content. Cull potato hydrolysate used as a nutrient source for biomass cultivation can significantly increase both biomass yield and chitin content. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The three-step process using pelletized R. oryzae fermentation innovatively integrates utilization of agricultural residues into the process of co-producing lactic acid and chitin, so as to improve the efficiency, revenues and cost of fungal lactic acid production.

Abstract
We demonstrate an experimental control of electron localization in deuterium molecular ions created and dissociated by the combined action of an attosecond pulse train and a many-cycle infrared (IR) pulse. The attosecond pulse train is synthesized using both even and odd high order harmonics of the driving IR frequency so that it can strobe the IR field once per IR cycle. An asymmetric ejection of the deuterium ions oscillates with the full IR period when the APT-IR time-delay is scanned. The observed control is due to the creation of a coherent superposition of 1s sigma{g} and 2p sigma{u} states via interference between one-photon and two-photon dissociation channels.

Abstract
Primary pulmonary hypoplasia is a rare, usually lethal, condition presenting only after birth without other congenital abnormalities. We describe the first case of fraternal twins diagnosed prenatally with primary pulmonary hypoplasia. Both had diffuse hypoplasia of the pulmonary arteries initially identified by fetal echocardiography and confirmed at autopsy following termination. These cases permit examination of the histopathology of this disease in the fetal stage of development.

Abstract
Conducting polymers (CPs) have the potential to provide superior neural interfaces to conventional metal electrodes by introducing more efficient charge transfer across the same geometric area. In this study the conducting polymer poly(ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was coated on platinum (Pt) microelectrode arrays. The in vitro electrical characteristics were assessed during biphasic stimulation regimes applied between electrode pairs. It was demonstrated that PEDOT could reduce the potential excursion at a Pt electrode interface by an order of magnitude. The charge injection limit of PEDOT was found to be 15 x larger than Pt. Additionally, PEDOT coated electrodes were acutely implanted in the suprachoroidal space of a cat retina. It was demonstrated that PEDOT coated electrodes also had lower potential excursions in vivo and electrically evoked potentials (EEPs) could be detected within the vision cortex.
