Abstract
The first measurement of neutron emission in electromagnetic dissociation of ^{208}Pb nuclei at the LHC is presented. The measurement is performed using the neutron zero degree calorimeters of the ALICE experiment, which detect neutral particles close to beam rapidity. The measured cross sections of single and mutual electromagnetic dissociation of Pb nuclei at sqrt[s(NN)]=2.76 TeV with neutron emission are σ(singleEMD)=187.4 ± 0.2(stat)(-11.2)(+13.2) (syst) b and σ(mutualEMD) = 5.7 ± 0.1(stat) ± 0.4(syst) b, respectively. The experimental results are compared to the predictions from a relativistic electromagnetic dissociation model.

Abstract
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Resistance to lapatinib generally develops in approximately half of patients within one year of initiating treatment. When lapatinib is withdrawn, there is often a rapid progression of disease which is associated with high mortality rates. This “flare” phenomenon has also been observed upon discontinuation of other tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
METHODS: Using the HER2+ cell lines SKBR3 and BT474, we developed both in vitro and in vivo models demonstrating lapatinib resistance and the tumor “flare” phenomenon. Parental HER2+ cell lines were gradually exposed to increasing doses of lapatinib (100nM to 5uM) to develop a lapatinib-resistant form which was ultimately maintained in 1uM of lapatinib. Lapatinib-”released” cell lines were developed by removing lapatinib exposure from resistant cell lines and allowing the cells to grow for at least two weeks. Cell lines were grown in vitro using traditional monolayer cell culturing techniques and mammosphere technology. A comprehensive analysis of parental, lapatinib-resistant, and lapatinib-released cell lines was performed using microscopy, protein/phosphoprotein analysis, cell cycle, cancer stem cell markers by FACS, and invasion assays. Parental cells served as the control in all experiments. In vivo models were performed by injecting 10,000 cells of parental, resistant, and released cell lines in the mammary fat pads of SCID mice. Tumors were surgically resected after approximately sixty days and volume recorded. All experiments were repeated three times and calculated for statistical significance.
RESULTS: Cell cycle analysis and proliferation assays demonstrate that lapatinib-resistant and released cell lines continue to proliferate despite the addition of 1uM lapatinib. Released cells also demonstrate less of a response to retreatment with lapatinib. Tumor volume of lapatinib-released cell lines were significantly larger than parental and resistant counterparts [parental: 39.9mm3, SD 9.48; resistant: 71.8mm3, SD 62.33; released: 943.4mm3, SD 100.1] and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). After three series of passages, mammosphere forming efficiency (MFE) was higher among lapatinib-released cell lines [parental: 1.03%; resistant: 1.93% released: 7.23%] and was statistically significant (p <0.01). Lapatinib-released mammosphere phenotypes appeared larger and less organized than the parental and resistant counterparts. MFE did not correlate with ALDH expression by FACS, and expression varied based on cell line. Western blot analysis revealed loss of E-cadherin among lapatinib-released cells which was not demonstrated in parental or resistant counterparts. Invasion assays demonstrated increased migration among resistant and released cell lines.
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate the first in vitro and in vivo models of the tumor “flare” phenomenon using HER2+ breast cancer cell lines. This model demonstrates that lapatinib-resistant cells released from the exposure to lapatinib are propelled into a unique and more aggressive phenotype. This model has potential to elucidate new mechanisms of resistance to TKI therapy and provide novel preclinical data that may help in the understanding of disease progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noninvasive methods are needed to improve the diagnosis of enteric neuropathies. Full-field optical coherence microscopy (FFOCM) is a novel optical microscopy modality that can acquire 1 μm resolution images of tissue. The objective of this research was to demonstrate FFOCM imaging for the characterization of the enteric nervous system (ENS). METHODS Normal mice and EdnrB(-/-) mice, a model of Hirschsprung's disease (HD), were imaged in three-dimensions ex vivo using FFOCM through the entire thickness and length of the gut. Quantitative analysis of myenteric ganglia was performed on FFOCM images obtained from whole-mount tissues and compared with immunohistochemistry imaged by confocal microscopy. KEY RESULTS Full-field optical coherence microscopy enabled visualization of the full thickness gut wall from serosa to mucosa. Images of the myenteric plexus were successfully acquired from the stomach, duodenum, colon, and rectum. Quantification of ganglionic neuronal counts on FFOCM images revealed strong interobserver agreement and identical values to those obtained by immunofluorescence microscopy. In EdnrB(-/-) mice, FFOCM analysis revealed a significant decrease in ganglia density along the colorectum and a significantly lower density of ganglia in all colorectal segments compared with normal mice. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Full-field optical coherence microscopy enables optical microscopic imaging of the ENS within the bowel wall along the entire intestine. FFOCM is able to differentiate ganglionic from aganglionic colon in a mouse model of HD, and can provide quantitative assessment of ganglionic density. With further refinements that enable bowel wall imaging in vivo, this technology has the potential to revolutionize the characterization of the ENS and the diagnosis of enteric neuropathies.

Abstract
Overexpression of a cotton defense-related gene GbWRKY1 in Arabidopsis resulted in modification of the root system by enhanced auxin sensitivity to positively regulate the Pi starvation response. GbWRKY1 was a cloned WRKY transcription factor from Gossypium barbadense, which was firstly identified as a defense-related gene and showed moderate similarity with AtWRKY75 from Arabidopsis thaliana. Overexpression of GbWRKY1 in Arabidopsis resulted in attenuated Pi starvation stress symptoms, including reduced accumulation of anthocyanin and impaired density of lateral roots (LR) in low Pi stress. The study also indicated that overexpression of GbWRKY1 caused plants constitutively exhibited Pi starvation response including increased development of LR, relatively high level of total P and Pi, high expression level of some high-affinity Pi transporters and phosphatases as well as enhanced accumulation of acid phosphatases activity during Pi-sufficient. It was speculated that GbWRKY1 may act as a positive regulator in the Pi starvation response as well as AtWRKY75. GbWRKY1 probably involves in the modulation of Pi homeostasis and participates in the Pi allocation and remobilization but do not accumulate more Pi in Pi-deficient condition, which was different from the fact that AtWRKY75 influenced the Pi status of the plant during Pi deprivation by increasing root surface area and accumulation of more Pi. Otherwise, further study suggested that the overexpression plants were more sensitive to auxin than wild-type and GbWRKY1 may partly influence the LPR1-dependent (low phosphate response 1) Pi starvation signaling pathway and was putatively independent of SUMO E3 ligase SIZ1 and PHR1 (phosphate starvation response 1) in response to Pi starvation.

Abstract
A simple HPLC with fluorescence detection method was developed for determination and pharmacokinetic study of Etoposide in dog plasma.Plasma sample pretreatment involved liquid-liquid extraction of 500 µL plasma. The chromatographic separation was carried out on a Gemini C18 column with a mixture of methanol (A) and water (B) (0~5 min, volume of A was 45-50%, 5~10 min, volume of A was 50-90%) used as mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.4 ml/min.These results indicated that the accuracy and precision of the current assay were within the recommendations for assay validation as stipulated in "Guidance for Industry: Bioanalytical Method Validation". Etoposide nanoparticles and injection pharmacokinetic parameters were as follows: T1/2, 2.26 (0.71) and 1.74 (0.43) h;Cmax, 13.24 (5.32) and 8.12 (3.61) µg/ml; AUC0-t, 41.32 (7.33) and 16.53 (4.12) µg · ml - 1 · h; AUC0-∞, 49.54 (9.62) and 19.64 (8.22) µg · ml - 1 · h; MRT, 3.13 (0.54) and 2.06 (0.33) h and CL 7.35 (1.53) and 12.61 (2.22), respectively. This method was fully validated and successfully applied to a preclinical pharmacokinetic study of Etoposide in dogs after i. v. drip administration.

Abstract
A search is presented for direct top squark pair production in final states with one isolated electron or muon, jets, and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV. The measurement is based on 4.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Each top squark is assumed to decay to a top quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations. Top squark masses between 230 GeV and 440 GeV are excluded with 95% confidence for massless LSPs, and top squark masses around 400 GeV are excluded for LSP masses up to 125 GeV.

Abstract
A search for direct pair production of supersymmetric top squarks (t(1)) is presented, assuming the t(1) decays into a top quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle, χ(1)(0), and that both top quarks decay to purely hadronic final states. A total of 16 (4) events are observed compared to a predicted standard model background of 13.5(-3.6)(+3.7)(4.4(-1.3)(+1.7)) events in two signal regions based on ∫Ldt = 4.7 fb(-1) of pp collision data taken at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. An exclusion region in the t(1) versus χ(1)(0) mass plane is evaluated: 370<m(t)(1)}<465 GeV is excluded for m(χ)(1)(0) ~ 0 GeV while m(t)(1) = 445 GeV is excluded for m(χ)(1)(0) ≤ 50 GeV.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-osteoporotic effects of Radix Dipsaci total saponins (RTS). We showed that RTS was able to improve bone properties by either an increase of osteoblastic activity or a decrease in osteoclastic activity. INTRODUCTION Radix Dipsaci has long been used as an anti-osteoporotic drug. The present study investigates the anti-osteoporotic effects of RTS. METHODS Three-month-old female rats were randomly assigned into a sham-operated group (sham) and five ovariectomy (OVX) subgroups, namely, OVX with vehicle (OVX), OVX with 17β-ethinylestradiol (E(2)), and OVX with graded doses of RTS (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg/d). RTS and E(2) were administered orally, daily from 1 week after OVX treatment for 4 months. Bone mass, turnover, and strength were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, biochemical markers, and the three-point bending test. The trabecular bone microarchitecture was assessed by microCT. In vitro experiments were performed to determine the potential molecular mechanisms of the anti-osteoporotic effect of RTS. RESULTS RTS prevented the loss of bone mass induced by OVX. The preventive effect on bone loss was primarily indicated by decreasing levels of bone turnover markers and confirmed by the changes in urinary calcium and phosphorus excretion. The treatment also enhanced the biomechanical strength of bone and prevented the deterioration of trabecular bone microarchitecture. RTS induced MC3T3-E1 and primary osteoblastic cell maturation and differentiation and increased bone formation by increasing BMP-2 synthesis. In addition, RTS inhibited osteoclastogenesis through an increase in osteoprotegrin and a decrease in NF-kB ligand expression in vitro. CONCLUSIONS RTS treatment can effectively suppress the loss of bone mass induced by OVX and in vitro evidence suggests this could be through actions on both osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blood pressure is a complex quantitative trait with a strong genetic component. In this study, we leveraged the Veterans Affairs electronic medical record system to explore the relationship between Paraoxonase 1 (PON1)-108 C/T (rs705379) and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). METHODS Outpatient blood pressure data over an approximate 8-year period was collected from the Veterans Affairs Hypertensive Cohort (N = 1,302). Association between genotype and longitudinal MAP was further explored using a random effects model controlling for age, ancestry, renal function, and other determinants of blood pressure. To control for population stratification, principal component groupings based on ancestry informative markers in this dataset were included as covariates (in addition to self-identified ancestry). Data from the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK, N = 857) was used to confirm significant findings in an independent cohort. RESULTS There was a significant interaction between PON1-108 C/T genotype and follow-up age group. At a younger age (<50 years), there was an estimated 2.53 mm Hg (95% confidence interval: 1.06, 4.00) increase in MAP with each additional C-allele. At the older age groups, there were no significant associations between PON1-108 C/T genotype and MAP. Using data from the AASK trial, the C-allele at PON1-108 C/T was significantly associated with a higher MAP (P = 0.005) but only among younger participants (<54 years). CONCLUSIONS The PON1-108 polymorphism may be associated with MAP in an age-dependent manner.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play important roles in extracellular matrix degradation and may be regulated by extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN). The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal expression and localization of MMP-8 and MMP-13 during the development of ligature-induced periodontitis in rats, and to analyze the correlations of EMMPRIN with MMP-8 and MMP-13 in periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Periodontitis was simulated in rats by ligaturing the cervix of the lower first molars, as described in our previous method. The rats were killed 0, 3, 5, 7, 11, 15 and 21 d after ligation. Micro-computed tomography examinations were performed to detect alveolar bone loss. Semiquantitative western blotting was used to assess the temporal changes in the levels of MMP-8, MMP-13 and EMMPRIN proteins in gingival tissue. Immunohistochemistry was applied to detect the expression and locations of MMP-8 and MMP-13 in gingival tissue and alveolar bone. RESULTS Alveolar bone loss showed an exponential increase from days 3 to 11, followed by a slower rate of loss at subsequent study time points. MMP-8 showed a rapid increase of expression from baseline to a peak on day 3, a gradual decrease from days 5 to 7 and then stabilized thereafter. MMP-8 was predominantly located in neutrophil-like cells. Statistically, the expression of MMP-8 was not correlated with the expression of EMMPRIN. The expression of MMP-13 and of EMMRPIN increased from days 3 to 7, and showed a moderate decrease thereafter. The immunoreactivity of MMP-13 was mainly detected in monocytes/macrophages, on the alveolar bone surface, in osteoclasts and in gingival epithelial cells. Statistically, MMP-13 had a strong, positive correlation with EMMPRIN (r = 0.855, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION The levels of expression of MMP-8 and MMP-13 are temporally varied at different periods during the development of experimental periodontitis. The level of expression of EMMPRIN is closely associated with the expression of MMP-13, but not with the expression of MMP-8. In addition, MMP-13 might be involved in alveolar bone destruction, as well as in physiological bone remodeling.

Abstract
Clinical studies and animal models have shown that pharmacoresistant epilepsy is partly due to the overexpression of ATP-binding cassette transporters at the brain. The purposes of the study were to investigate the function and expression of multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (Mrp2) in the brain of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-kindled rats, and the effect of the altered Mrp2 function and expression on phenytoin (PHT) distribution in the brain. Kindled rats were developed by sub-convulsive dose of PTZ (33 mg/kg, every day, intraperitoneal (i.p.)) for 28 days. Mrp2 expression and function were measured by western blot and bromosulfophthalein (BSP) distribution in the brain. PHT concentrations in the brain of PTZ-kindled rats were measured alone or with co-administration of probenecid (50mg/kg). Further experiment was designed to investigate whether PHT treatment prevented the up-regulated brain Mrp2 expression and function induced by PTZ-kindling. The results showed that PTZ-kindling resulted in an increase of Mrp2 level in the hippocampus and cortex of rats, accompanied by significant decreases in the brain-to-plasma concentration ratio of BSP. PTZ-kindling also decreased PHT levels in the hippocampus and cortex without altering PHT concentrations in plasma, resulting in a lower brain-to-plasma concentration ratio of PHT. Co-administration of probenecid increased the brain-to-plasma ratio of BSP and PHT in the brain of both normal and PTZ-kindled rats. A 14-day PHT treatment prevented the up-regulation of Mrp2 expression and function induced by PTZ-kindling, accompanied by increases of PHT concentrations in the brain and good anticonvulsive effects. The present study demonstrated that chronic PTZ-kindling increased Mrp2 expression and function in the rat brain, and the up-regulation partly came from epileptic seizure.

Abstract
Cyclins constitute a growing family of regulatory proteins that complex with, and activate, protein kinases involved in cell cycle control. Dysregulation of cyclin expression and/or cyclin-dependent kinase (cdk) activities may play a pivotal role in oncogenesis. In this report, we characterize a novel human cyclin gene by molecular cloning. This gene, designated CYCG1, encodes a human homologue of the rat G-type cyclin, exhibiting structural features and conserved sequence motifs of identified G(1) cyclins. The CYCG1 gene is expressed constitutively in synchronized human WI-38 fibroblasts and MG-63 osteosarcoma cells, which is reminiscent of CLN3 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Marked overexpression of CYCG1 is observed in a subset of human osteosarcoma cells, providing a potential link to cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the feasibility and toxicity of preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery in the treatment of stage III NSCLC and to evaluate its effects on tumor response, resection rate, tumor downstaging, and survival rate. METHODS From Jan. 1990 to Jan. 2001, 624 patients were randomly devided into group A ( preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy group) and group B ( control group, without neoadjuvant chemotherapy) . Group A had 314 patients and group B had 310 cases. The patients in group A were give 2 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and operations were performed in 4 weeks after finishing the last chemotherapy. Twenty-one patients were given bronchial artery intervensional chemotherapy. The other 293 cases were given intravenous chemotherapy. The regimens included MVP in 68 cases, CAP in 36 cases, EP in 67 cases, VIP in 20 cases, Gem+ DDP in 30 cases, NVB+ DDP in 32 cases, Taxol+ NVB in 30 cases, and Taxol+ DDP in 10 cases. The patients in group B were firstly operated. Thoracic radiation therapy of 50-55 Gy was g iven in the patients with N1 and N2 disease both in group A and group B. RESULTS The tumor response to induction chemotherapy was 73. 57%( 231/ 314) in group A. The tumor downstaging was 43. 63%( 137/ 314) . The histological complete response was 15. 92%( 50/ 314) . The resection rate was 97. 69% in group A, and 91. 94% in group B. No significant differences of blood loss, operative complications and mortality were observed between the group A and group B. The 1-, 3-, 5- and 10-year survival rates were 89. 35%, 67. 46% , 34. 39% and 29. 34% in group A, and 87. 53%, 51. 54%, 24. 19% and 21. 64% in group B respectively. The long-term survival rate in group A was remarkably higher than that in group B ( P < 0. 01) . CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrate that the preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy is safe and effective. It is helpful to decrease the tumor staging , to increase the resection rate of the tumor, and to improve the long-term survival rate and life qualities of patients with stage III NSCLC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the potential therapeutic effect of arsenic trioxide(As₂O₃ ) on human lung cancer. METHODS Cell growth curves, cell proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis of human lung cancer cell line GLC-82 were detected by theMTT method and flowcytometry (FCM) . RESULTS The data showed that As₂O₃ significantly inhibited proliferation of GLC-82 cells and the inhibiting effects had a dose-and time-dependence. The cell proliferation inhibition rate was 81. 05% when treated with 4. 0 Lmol/L As₂O₃ for 96 hours. The change of DNA content of GLC-82 cells indicated that As₂O₃ was able to block cell cycle progress in G2/M phase, with appearance of sub-G1 peak in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS As₂O₃ can effectively inhibit the proliferation of human lung cancer cell line GLC-82 and the possible mechanisms may be related to G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis induced by As₂O₃.

Abstract
Inflammation is a critical component of tumour progression. Although complement and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α potentially exert significant anti-tumour effects, both mediators may also promote tumour progression. It has been demonstrated that sublytic complement confers resistance on tumour cells not only against lytic complement, but also other danger molecules such as perforin. In low concentrations, TNF promotes survival of malignant cells rather than exerting cytotoxic activity. In this study, we tested if sublytic complement is able to interfere with TNF-mediated tumour cell killing. Our results demonstrate that either subcytotoxic concentrations of TNF or sublytic complement rescue prostate carcinoma cells (DU145) from TNF-α-mediated cell death. Upon pretreatment with low-dose TNF-α, but not upon pre-exposure to sublytic complement, TNF resistance was associated with the down-regulation of TNF receptor 1 (TNF-R1) expression. Complement-induced protection against TNF-mediated apoptosis accompanied the induction of anti-apoptotic proteins [B cell leukaemia/lymphoma (Bcl)-2 and Bcl-xL] at an early stage followed by inhibition of the TNF-induced decrease in the amount of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL. Cell protection also accompanied the inhibition of caspase-8 activation, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 cleavage and the activation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB. Our data extend our current view on the induction of tumour cell resistance against cytotoxic mediators supporting the role of the tumour microenvironment in mediating protection against the anti-cancer immune response.

Abstract
The ALICE Collaboration has measured the inclusive production of muons from heavy-flavor decays at forward rapidity, 2.5<y<4, in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=2.76 TeV. The p(t)-differential inclusive cross section of muons from heavy-flavor decays in pp collisions is compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The nuclear modification factor is studied as a function of p(t) and collision centrality. A weak suppression is measured in peripheral collisions. In the most central collisions, a suppression of a factor of about 3-4 is observed in 6<p(t)<10 GeV/c. The suppression shows no significant p(t) dependence.
