Abstract
Objective: To estimate the accuracy of mammography for population-based breast cancer screening. Methods: Studies of screening mammography performance were systematically reviewed in the Medline, Embase, Cochrane and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) literature databases. The retrieval was performed by using related key words, including disease name, screening and intervention indicators and study type. A total of 1 167 records were retrieved by June 4, 2015 and those studies met the inclusion criteria were included for the current analysis. The numbers of true-positive, false-positive, false-negative and true-negative were originally extracted and calculated from each individual study. A QUADAS checklist was used to assess the quality of the studies. A curve of summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) was applied as a comprehensive assessment of diagnosed accuracy. The pooled effect size of both sensitivity and specificity was quantitatively synthesized in both total population and subgroup with dense breast using the bivariate mixed-effects models. We conducted a sensitivity analysis in the studies with sample size over 100 000. Heterogeneity between studies was measured by the Q test and I2 statistic, and publication bias was evaluated by a funnel plot and the linear regression test. Results: A total of 48 publications with 8 551 873 individuals were identified for the final qualitative synthesis, most of them were from Europe area and American (38 studies), 8 were from Asia area, and 2 were from Oceania area. The studies were conducted during period of 1975-2013, and the age of study women ranged mostly from 40 to 75 years. The area under the SROC curve (AUC) was 0.95 (95%CI: 0.93-0.97). It was estimated that the pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.81 (95%CI: 0.77-0.84) and 0.96 (95%CI: 0.94-0.96), respectively. The results were indicated stable and robust in sensitivity analysis. In the subgroup with dense breast, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.74 (95% CI: 0.61-0.83) and 0.93 (95% CI: 0.89-0.96), respectively. Funnel plot and test results showed there was no significant publication bias among the included studies. Conclusion: The accuracy of mammography is high for population-based breast cancer screening in women, although the sensitivity is lower in women with dense breast.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare differences in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) between halitosis and non-halitosis patients and to explore relationships between halitosis and OHRQoL. METHODS Patients who visited the halitosis clinic at the Ninth People's Hospital and were diagnosed with halitosis were included in the halitosis group. The control group consisted of patients without halitosis. All participants were assessed for halitosis (volatile sulphur compound measurements with a portable sulphide monitor, Oral Chroma and organoleptic tests), underwent a clinical oral examination (dental caries status and periodontal condition) and completed a questionnaire. Oral health-related quality of life was measured using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14, Chinese version). RESULTS A total of 204 patients (102 halitosis and 102 controls) were included. The halitosis group had significantly higher OHIP-14 scores (severity) than the control group (15.7 versus 7.9, P < 0.001). The mean number of items with negative impact (extent) was significantly different between the halitosis and control groups (1.8 versus 0.3, P < 0.001). Around 56% of participants in the halitosis group reported at least one item with 'fairly often' or 'very often' (prevalence), while 21% did so in the control group (P < 0.001). In halitosis patients, the most commonly reported negative impacts were within the domains of 'psychological discomfort' and 'psychological disability'. CONCLUSIONS Oral health-related quality of life status was significantly poorer in halitosis patients than in non-halitosis patients. Halitosis patients may experience some degree of psychological discomfort and disability.

Abstract
While general anesthetics control pain via consciousness regulation, local anesthetics (LAs) act by decreasing sensation in the localized area of administration by blocking nerve transmission to pain centers. Perioperative intra-articular administration of LAs is a commonly employed practice in orthopedic procedures to minimize patient surgical and post-surgical pain and discomfort. LAs are also co-administered with cellular mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapies for a variety of tissue regenerative and inflammatory applications including osteoarthritis (OA) treatment; however, LAs can affect MSC viability and function. Therefore, finding an improved method to co-administer LAs with cells has become critically important. We have developed a sustained release LA delivery model that could enable the co-administration of LAs and MSCs. Encapsulation of liposomes within an alginate matrix leads to sustained release of bupivacaine as compared to bupivacaine-containing liposomes alone. Furthermore, drug release is maintained for a minimum of 4 days and the alginate-liposome capsules mitigated the adverse effects of bupivacaine on MSC viability.

Abstract
Background and aims: Diagnostic performance of patellar position for patellar cartilage lesions remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the abnormal patella height and its correlation with chondral lesions of the patellofemoral joint in China. Material and methods: A total of 1703 consecutive patients who performed knee joint examination using an extremity-dedicated low-field magnetic resonance imaging were enrolled in this study. Patellar cartilage lesions were diagnosed based on the result of magnetic resonance imaging and clinical data. Patella height was defined as the ratio of patellar tendon length to patellar length according to Insall-Salvati index. Patella alta and infera were defined as tendon length/patellar length >1.2 and <0.8, respectively. Results: The total prevalence of patellar cartilage lesions was 38.0%. The prevalence in females was significantly higher than that in males (46.4% vs 28.8%, p < 0.001). Age notably increased the incidence of patellar cartilage lesions ( p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that tendon length/patellar length ratio was significantly correlated with patellar cartilage lesions (odds ratio = 6.380, p < 0.001). Furthermore, patients with cartilage lesions showed significantly higher rates of patella alta and infera ( p < 0.001). In addition, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis demonstrated that abnormal patella height had statistical significance in diagnosing cartilage lesions ( p < 0.001). However, the area under the curve (0.596; 95% confidence interval: 0.568–0.624) and sensitivity (47.0%) were relatively low, while the specificity was 72.2%. Conclusions: Patients with patellar cartilage lesions have an increased tendon length/patellar length ratio. The abnormal patella height is significantly correlated with chondral lesions and can be used as a potential diagnostic marker.

Abstract
We aimed to assess the protein 4.1R (4.1R) expression of the membrane skeleton in cardiomyocytes and to determine the potential role of 4.1R in the pathogenesis of heart failure (HF). Forty-two male mice were randomly divided into two groups: an HF group (N = 22) and control group (N = 20). The HF model was established by abdominal subcutaneous injection of 5 mg⋅kg(-1)⋅day(-1) isopropyl adrenaline to the mice for 14 days. Electrocardiography was carried out and cardiac function was assessed by ultrasonic cardiogram. The left ventricular weight index (LVMI) was measured after mice were sacrificed, and the pathological changes of the heart were observed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. The expression of 4.1R in cardiomyocytes was analyzed by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The echocardiographs showed that the left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LVEDD) and left ventricular end-systolic dimension (LVESD) were significantly higher in the HF group than in the controls (P < 0.05), while the left ventricle shortening fraction was remarkably lower than that in the controls (P < 0.05). Electrocardiography showed faster heart rates in the HF group than in the control group (P < 0.05). Both the LVMI and the myocardial tissue pathological score were significantly higher (P < 0.01) in the HF group than in the controls. 4.1R localized mostly to the plasma membrane and was distributed discretely in the cytosol of myocardial cells. The proportion of 4.1R-positive cells was significantly higher in the HF group (P < 0.01) than in the controls, which was confirmed by the positive mRNA expression of 4.1R. 4.1R localized mostly to the plasma membrane of myocardial cells and was upregulated with the progression of HF. This suggests that 4.1R may be associated with HF progression and therefore 4.1R represents a promising therapeutic target in HF.

Abstract
Skin rash, diarrhea and hepatotoxicity are the most common toxicities of Gefitinib, an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor. The present study investigated the effects of genetic polymorphisms of drug target, metabolizing enzymes and transporters on Gefitinib toxicities. Thirty single-nucleotide polymorphisms, including EGFR, cytochromes P450 and ATP-binding cassette (ABC), were genotyped by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight platform in 59 non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with Gefitinib. Correlation analyses were performed to evaluate their effects on Gefitinib-induced toxicities. ABCB1 rs1128503 TT genotype was a significant high-risk determinant of both skin rash and diarrhea, with 15.78- and 10.78-fold of incident risk increased, respectively. (odds ratio (OR)=15.78, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.01-124.1, P=0.0087; OR=10.78, 95% CI 1.54-75.40, P=0.0166 vs non-TT genotypes). Patients with ABCB1 rs1128503 TT genotype had greater risk of skin rash and diarrhea. Therefore, polymorphism analyses of ABCB1 might be beneficial to optimize Gefitinib treatment.

Abstract
Kalanchoe daigremontiana utilizes plantlet formation between its zigzag leaf margins as its method of asexual reproduction. In this study, K. daigremontiana SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1 (KdSOC1), a key intermediate in the transition from vegetative to asexual growth, was cloned. Furthermore, its expression profiles during plantlet formation under different environmental and hormone induction conditions were analyzed. The full-KdSOC1 cDNA sequence length was 1410 bp with 70% shared homology with Carya cathayensis SOC1. The conserved domain search of KdSOC1 showed the absence of I and C domains, which might indicate novel biological functions in K. daigremontiana. The full-KdSOC1 promoter sequence was 1401 bp long and contained multiple-hormone-responsive cis-acting elements. Hormone induction assays showed that gibberellins and salicylic acid mainly regulated KdSOC1 expression. The swift change from low to high KdSOC1 expression levels during long-day induction was accompanied by the rapid emergence of plantlets. Drought stress stimulated KdSOC1 expression in leaves both with and without plantlet formation. Together, the results suggested that KdSOC1 was closely involved in environmental stimulation signal perception and the transduction of K. daigremontiana plantlet formation. Therefore, future identification of KdSOC1 functions might reveal key information that will help elucidate the transition network between embryogenesis and organogenesis during plantlet formation.

Abstract
The basement membrane (BM) is an extracellular matrix associated with overlying cells and is important for proper tissue development, stability, and physiology. COL4A1 is the most abundant component of type IV collagen in the BM, and COL4A1 variants can present with variable phenotypes that might be related to cerebral palsy (CP). We postulated, therefore, that variations in the COL4A1 gene might play an important role in the etiology of CP. In this study, six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the COL4A1 gene were genotyped among 351 CP patients and 220 healthy controls from the Chinese Han population. Significant association was found for an association between CP and rs1961495 (allele: p = 0.008, odds ratio (OR) = 1.387, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.088-1.767) and rs1411040 (allele: p = 0.009, OR = 1.746, 95% CI = 1.148-2.656) SNPs of the COL4A1 gene. Multifactor dimensionality reduction analysis suggested that these SNPs had interactive effects on the risk of CP. This study is the first attempt to investigate the contribution of polymorphisms in the COL4A1 gene to the susceptibility of CP in a Chinese Han population. This study shows an association of the COL4A1 gene with CP and suggests a potential role of COL4A1 in the pathogenesis of CP.

Abstract
Ferrofluids are familiar as colloidal suspensions of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in aqueous or organic solvents. The dispersed particles are randomly oriented but their moments become aligned if a magnetic field is applied, producing a variety of exotic and useful magnetomechanical effects. A longstanding interest and challenge has been to make such suspensions macroscopically ferromagnetic, that is having uniform magnetic alignment in the absence of a field. Here we report a fluid suspension of magnetic nanoplates that spontaneously aligns into an equilibrium nematic liquid crystal phase that is also macroscopically ferromagnetic. Its zero-field magnetization produces distinctive magnetic self-interaction effects, including liquid crystal textures of fluid block domains arranged in closed flux loops, and makes this phase highly sensitive, with it dramatically changing shape even in the Earth's magnetic field. Ferromagnetism has been known as a material property of solids since the time of the ancient Greeks. Here, Shuai et al. report that magnetic nanoplates suspended in a simple solvent can spontaneously align to form a ferromagnetic liquid, capable of both producing and sensing magnetic fields.

Abstract
Repeated exposure to cocaine during adolescence may affect both physical and psychological conditions in the brain, and increase the risk of psychiatric disorders and addiction behaviors in adulthood. Adolescence represents a critical development period for the hippocampus. Moreover, different regions of the hippocampus are involved in different functions. Dorsal hippocampus (dHP) has been implicated in learning and memory, whereas ventral hippocampus (vHP) plays an important role in emotional processing. In this study, the rats that were exposed to cocaine during adolescence (postnatal days, P28-P42) showed higher anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze test in adulthood (P80), but displayed normal spatial learning and memory in the Morris water maze test. Furthermore, repeated exposure to cocaine during adolescence lead to alterations in morphology of pyramidal neurons, activities of astrocytes, and levels of proteins that involved in synaptic transmission, apoptosis, inflammation and addiction in both dHP and vHP of adult rats. These findings suggest that repeated exposure to cocaine during adolescence in rats may elicit morphologic and neurochemical changes in the hippocampus when the animals reach adulthood. These changes may contribute to the increased susceptibility for psychiatric disorders and addiction seen in adults.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to construct lentivirus-mediated short hairpin RNA (shRNA) vectors targeting the duck MSTN gene and investigate whether these vectors can affect the development of duck primary cultured embryonic myoblasts. MSTN mRNA levels in the myoblasts were detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cell proliferation was assessed by MTT assays and cell differentiation was assayed by photography. MSTN mRNA levels in PLL3.7-MSTN-shRNA1, PLL3.7-MSTN-shRNA2 and PLL3.7-MSTN-shRNA3 lentivirus-mediated shRNA groups were reduced by 61.6%, 76.9% and 79.1%, respectively, compared to control cells. Down-regulation of MSTN in duck embryonic myoblasts stimulated cell proliferation and inhibited differentiation, accompanied by a greater than twofold down-regulation of MyoD expression and up-regulation of Myf5 expression. These results revealed that silencing of MSTN changes the development of duck embryonic myoblasts by regulating the expression level of MyoD and Myf5 genes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatty acid deposition in the liver can activate a number of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways such as the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathway, which may be important in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. 1,25(OH)2D3 downregulates the expression of TLR4 and may represent a novel treatment strategy for reducing hepatocyte injury. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the protective effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 on diabetic liver injury in vivo. METHODS Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats were randomly divided into five groups and treated with low-dose 1,25(OH)2D3 (0.025 μg/kg/day), medium-dose 1,25(OH)2D3 (0.15 μg/kg/day), high-dose 1,25(OH)2D3 (0.3 μg/kg/day), insulin (protamine zinc insulin 16 U/kg/day, subcutaneous injection), or no intervention (the control group). Sixteen weeks later, the rats were killed, and blood samples were obtained to test lipid profiles and hepatic function. The infiltration of inflammatory cells, the level of fibrosis, and the expression levels of TLR4, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the liver were analyzed. The hepatocytes were treated with vehicle control, LPS (100 ng), high fat [DMEM + FFA (0.1 mM: palmitic acid, oleic acid, 1:2)], LPS + high fat, vehicle + 1,25(OH)2D3 (10(-7) M), LPS + 1,25(OH)2D3, high fat + 1,25(OH)2D3, or LPS + high fat + 1,25(OH)2D3. RNA and protein were extracted to detect the expression of TLR4 and downstream inflammatory factors such as NF-ΚB, TNF-α, and IL-6. Groups of data were compared by single factor variance analysis. RESULTS High-dose 1,25(OH)2D3 administration for 16 weeks downregulated the expression of TLR4, NF-κB, and TNF-α in the liver tissue of diabetic rats and attenuated hepatic inflammation and fibrosis, as shown by immunohistochemical staining, hematoxylin and eosin staining, Masson's trichrome staining, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and western blotting. In vitro, hepatocytes treated with high fat or LPS exhibited significantly increased expression of TLR4, NF-κB, and downstream inflammatory factors (P < 0.05). Intervention with 1,25(OH)2D3 decreased the expression of TLR4, NF-κB, and inflammatory factors (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS 1,25(OH)2D3 exhibited protective effects against diabetes-related liver injury, possibly through downregulation of components of the TLR4 signaling pathway.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that are involved in key biological processes, including development, differentiation, and regeneration. The global miRNA expression profile that regulates the regenerative potential of the neonatal mouse heart has not been reported. We performed deep sequencing to determine the genome-wide miRNA expression profile of the neonatal mouse heart at three key ages (1, 6, and 7 days). The miRNAs at least 1.4-fold differentially expressed between the three time points were selected for further analysis. Two miRNAs (mmu-miR-22-5p and mmu-miR-338-3p) were significantly upregulated, and nine miRNAs (mmu-miR-324-5p, mmu-miR-337-5p, mmu-miR-339-5p, mmu-miR-365-1-5p, mmu-miR-500-3p, mmu-miR-505-5p, mmu-miR-542-5p, mmu-miR-668-3p, and mmu-miR-92a-1-5p) were significantly downregulated in cardiac tissue of 7-day-old mice compared to 1- and 6-day-old mice. The expression patterns of five significantly different miRNAs were verified by quantitative real-time PCR. Furthermore, the potential targets of these putative miRNAs were suggested using miRNA target prediction tools. The candidate target genes are involved in the myocardial regenerative process, with a prominent role for the Notch signaling pathway. Our study provides a valuable resource for future investigation of the biological function of miRNAs in heart regeneration.

Abstract
Human age-related retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), are intimately associated with decreased tissue oxygenation and hypoxia. Different antioxidants have been investigated to reverse AMD. In the present study, we describe the antioxidant 17β-estradiol (βE2) and investigate its protective effects on retinal neurons. Fourteen days after ovariectomy, adult Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to 8000-lux light for 12h to induce retinal degeneration. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were assessed by confocal fluorescence microscopy using 2,7-dichlorofluorescein diacetate. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and antioxidant enzyme mRNA expression were detected by real-time PCR. Western blotting was used to evaluate NRF2 activation. NRF2 translocation was determined by immunohistochemistry, with morphological changes monitored by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Following light exposure, βE2 significantly reduced ROS production. βE2 also up-regulated NRF2 mRNA and protein levels, with maximal expression at 4 and 12h post-exposure, respectively. Interestingly, following βE2 administration, NRF2 was translocated from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, primarily in the outer nuclear layer. βE2 also up-regulated NRF2, which triggered phase-2 antioxidant enzyme expression (superoxide dismutases 1 and 2, catalase, glutaredoxins 1 and 2, and thioredoxins 1 and 2), reduced ROS production, and ameliorated retinal damage. However, the beneficial effects of βE2 were markedly suppressed by pretreatment with LY294002 or ICI182780, specific inhibitors of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-Akt (PI3K/AKT), and estrogen receptor (ER) signaling pathways, respectively. Taken together, these observations suggest that βE2 exerts antioxidative effects following light-induced retinal degeneration potentially via NRF2 activation. This protective mechanism may depend on two pathways: a rapid, non-genomic-type PI3K/AKT response, and a genomic-type ER-dependent response. Our data provide evidence that βE2 is a potentially effective in the treatment of retinal degeneration diseases.

Abstract
Influenza virus (IV) infection is a major public health problem, causing millions of cases of severe illness and as many as 500 000 deaths each year worldwide. Given the limitations of current prevention or treatment of acute influenza, novel therapies are needed. RNA interference (RNAi) through microRNAs (miRNA) is an emerging technology that can suppress virus replication in vitro and in vivo. Here, we describe a novel strategy for the treatment of infuenza based on RNAi delivered by a replication-defective adenovirus (Ad) vector, derived from chimpanzee serotype 68 (AdC68). Our results showed that artificial miRNAs (amiRNAs) specifically targeting conserved regions of the IV genome could effectively inhibit virus replication in human embryonic kidney 293 cells. Moreover, our results demonstrated that prophylactic treatment with AdC68 expressing amiRNAs directed against M1, M2 or nucleoprotein genes of IV completely protected mice from homologous A/PR8 virus challenge and partially protected the mice from heterologous influenza A virus strains such as H9N2 and H5N1. Collectively, our data demonstrate that amiRNAs targeting the conserved regions of influenza A virus delivered by Ad vectors should be pursued as a novel strategy for prophylaxis of IV infection in humans and animals.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to investigate the inducing effect of subminimum inhibitory concentrations of macrolide antibiotics on Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) resistance to drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS One M. pneumoniae reference strain M129 (ATCC 29342) and 104 clinical isolates were incubated at 37C for 6-8 days. Genomic DNA of M. pneumoniae was extracted using TIANamp Bacteria DNA kit and amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS Ten sensitive isolates obtained from 104 M. pneumoniae clinical isolates were induced by subminimum inhibitory concentrations of macrolide antibiotics. Among them, three were found to possess mutations in L4 and L22 ribosomal proteins. Two cases carried simultaneously the C162A and A430G mutations of L4 and the T279C mutation of L22. In addition, one case had only the A209T mutation of L4. CONCLUSIONS Repeated in vitro exposure to subminimum inhibitory concentrations of macrolide antibiotics could induce selective mutations in ribosomal genes of M. pneumoniae clinical isolates that cause resistance to macrolide antibiotics. Abstract
The endogenous tetrapeptide endomorphin-2 (EM2) participates in pain modulation by binding to pre- and/or post-synaptic μ opioid receptor (MOR). In the present study, pathological expression and antinociceptive effects of EM2 at the spinal level were investigated in a rat model of bone cancer pain. The model was established by introducing Walker 256 mammary gland carcinoma cells into the tibia medullary cavity. Immunohistochemical staining for EM2 showed a markedly reduced EM2-immunoreactivity in the ipsilateral spinal dorsal horn on days 6, 12 and 18 post Walker 256 inoculation (p < 0.05). Intrathecal injection (i.t.) of EM2 significantly attenuated cancer-induced mechanical allodynia (p < 0.05) which could be blocked by β-funaltrexamine (β-FNA), the μ receptor antagonist (p < 0.05). Furthermore, topical application of EM2 dose-dependently inhibited the electrically evoked C-fiber responses and postdischarge of wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons within the spinal cord (p < 0.05), and pretreatment with β-FNA abolished the hyperactivity of these neurons. Compared with the antinociception of morphine which took effect from 40 min to 100 min post application, the analgesic action of EM2 was characterized by quick onset and short-lived efficacy (p < 0.05), being most potent at 10 min and lasting about 20 min. These findings indicate that the down-regulated spinal EM2 is an important contributor to the neuropathological process of bone cancer pain and enhancing activation of EM2/μ receptor signaling might provide a therapeutic alternative to optimizing the treatment of cancer-induced bone pain.

UNLABELLED In this study, we developed and validated a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for Salmonella detection targeting bcfD gene, a conserved fimbrial operon gene existing in Salmonella. The Salmonella LAMP assay we developed successfully amplified 44 Salmonella strains (14 standard strains and 30 clinical isolates), but none of 9 non-Salmonella standard strains (Proteus mirabilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, Shigella sonnei, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Campylobacter jejuni and Vibrio parahemolyticus). The detection limit was 5 CFU of Salmonella pure culture or 200 CFU of artificially spiked faeces per reaction system (equivalent to 5000 CFU g(-1) of faeces), and this method could directly detect Salmonella in chicken faeces free of pre-enrichment in a reaction time of 25 min. Our experiments show that the LAMP method we developed is a rapid, sensitive, specific and practical method for Salmonella detection. The Salmonella LAMP assay can potentially serve as new on-site diagnostics in the food and agricultural industries.
